First photo is a gif of a multi vortex tornado. The two vortexes are circling around each other giving it the illusion of two legs walking followed by a much larger single vortex.
Second photo is a still image of the same phenomenon but much closer and one of the "legs" is up and almost bent like a knee and there is a smaller third vortex that looks like it's just forming.
Third photo is a still image that is blurry and zoomed in in just the tornado, there are three vortexes all tangled around each other giving it the shape of an arm poking out but the legs are less distiguished.
Fourth photo is a still image taken by Homer G Ramby and is of two thin tall vortexes that look like skinny legs doing high steps
Fifth photo is a screenshot of a post on r/tornado from user ConradShu titled "Deadman walking is not an Indian legend" and reads:
"It became famous with Jarrell and we all know the picture. A specific documentary (I can't remember) from the early - mid 2000s was the first time ever that a multi-vortex tornado was referred to as "Dead man walking" and added it was an "Indian legend". This is false. There are no Indian legends about multi-vortex tornadoes that resemble a walking man. This was added purely for dramatic effect for the show, but since then, has become an adopted terminology for certain pictures that capture the likeness.
Keep in mind, Native Americans weren't out there chasing storms. They could absolutely read the weather decently, and when there was a huge storm approaching, they would take as best shelter as they could. The appearance of a "dead man walking" typically happens so quick, that you only really notice it in pictures. Not even on video really, and it also very much depends on the angle you're looking at the storm from. To say that it was observed by the naked eyes of Native Americans enough for there to be a legend about it is utterly nidicolous.
However, there is terminology of "Dead Man Walking" that does date back to the 1800s. It was used to describe the eerie calmness before a storm hit."

What are dead man walking tornadoes? :O
it’s a multi-vortex tornado. i dont remember the tribe it originates from (i think it was cherokee), but there’s a native american legend…? saying? that goes “if you see a man in a tornado, you are about to die.”
the most infamous shot of a dead man walking tornado hit jarrell, texas in 1997
it did so much damage to the town it caused the scale that tornados are measured by, the fijita scale, undergo revisions, and it made anchoring buildings in the tornado alley region pretty much mandatory. (it took the entire town off the map. only those who had taken shelter outside of the town or in underground bunkers survived.)
two more examples of dead man walking tornadoes looking like a person are a tornado from 2011 that hit cullman, alabama
and a tornado from 1975 that hit xenia, ohio
#sixpenceee level research on this one bud.#glad to see the editions on this. i saw ''native american legend'' and saw red flags#like ok what band what tribe what is it actually called in their language what area etc etc. you gotta ask these questions when you see it#cause for some reason people think their spooky story will be spookier if they can pawn it off as a native american legend

Unpopular Belief about "Deities"
Please take this with a grain of salt. I know there's going to be some hurt feelings about this. Just block me and save your time because I do not answer to hateful replies. They will be blocked immediately.
Ahead of time, I'm NOT telling you to NOT worship them. If you feel that intimacy with the "gods" you worship, then go on ahead. If you find fulfillment with them, please continue and move on.
I just want to state my mind on what I find is a sinister trend with pagan "gods." (I'm well aware that it's unintentional for the most part)
.......
No.
Not all "gods" love you.
Not all "gods" unconditionally love you.
Not all "gods" even know you exist.
Not all "gods" care about your wellbeing.
Not all "gods" are accepting when you worship someone else.
Not all "gods" act like animated characters that I've seen people make them out to be.
Not all "gods" will change your life for the better. (At least all the time)
Not all "gods" want to be a different gender as you idealistically depicted them as...as some strictly stayed where they were known for.
--
Some "gods" are misogynistic.
Some "gods" are misandrists.
Some "gods" are predatory.
Some "gods" are manipulative.
Some "gods" see you as replaceable pawn.
Some "gods" are toxic and controlling.
Some "gods" are genocidal.
Some "gods" will look at you and ruin your life if you don't know what you're dealing with. Some "gods" are not the paragons of morality.
These beings have different personalities, traits, stories, and capacities for certain things or for certain people.
JUST because they are deemed as "gods," that doesn't mean they all have this one dimensional, demanded expectation of what makes them "gods."
-------------------------------------------------------------------
HUGE PLUS HERE; HUGE, HUGE RED FLAG:
Someone claiming the stories/myths about these "deities" are not to be acknowledged or that these "gods" shouldn't be questioned and unquestionably revered because they're "gods" -- are people I don't trust at all.
That could be potentially dangerous to new people getting into this.
What is a legend without the stories to know what happened?
...Or how they came to be along with their personalities, capabilities, and how they react?
The myths are absolutely something worth reading up on. You can't just will it away because they ruin YOUR desired vision of who they are/who you want them to be.
It's disrespectful to even the culture surrounding their flaws.
A lot of pagans/ex-Christians here are evangelizing them.
It's ironically painting them as all one and the same kind of being, and it makes the "gods" lose some form of identity and uniqueness.
Good or bad.
The myths exists. Without them, the concept of these "gods" wouldn't logically exist to us. It's a part of the culture too, good or bad. It's like history -- you can't erase history but know it and learn from it.
It'll be like saying, "I worship wendigos but don't listen to Native Americans about the part where they are known to eat people. These beings love and care about you. Remember that! They understand the time you put into them."
...I can't help but think this whole thing stinks of "I can fix him" intentions.

Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai have made their Broadway production debut this month with the musical Suffs.
However, news of the show was not music to everyone's ears. Critics took to social media to accuse the pair of double standards and “silence” over the plight of Palestinian women in Gaza amid ongoing Israeli bombardment, while producing and promoting a musical about the early 20th-century suffragette movement in the US.
“Malala co-producing a musical about the American women's suffrage movement while being silent about the horrific atrocities being committed against women and girls in Gaza & actively collaborating with a vocal champion of Israel,” posted one user on X, formerly Twitter.
“Irony has never been more stark.” Clinton, who ran for president in 2016, has promoted herself as an advocate for feminism and women’s rights.
This has prompted many online users to highlight what they say is the "glaring hypocrisy" of Clinton’s backing of Israel despite several reports on Israel’s human rights violations against Palestinian women and girls, including sexual abuse. Yousafzai, on the other hand, became a household name in the fight for girls’ education after she was shot in 2012 for speaking out against the Pakistani Taliban’s restrictions on girls’ access to education.
At 17, she became the youngest-ever Nobel laureate in 2014 for her activism. Social media users expressed their disappointment with her collaboration with Clinton amid Israel’s targeted strikes on educational institutions in Gaza and the violence that has forced schools in the occupied West Bank to close and turn to remote learning.
“Malala herself has been relatively muted on the devastation of the education system in Gaza. Whatever little she’s said, has been muted platitudes,” said one user. Social media users have also criticised Yousafzai for partnering with “warmonger” Clinton, who as secretary of state under President Obama oversaw deadly drone strikes that killed hundreds of civilians, including children, in the activist’s native Pakistan.
“Malala said drone attacks are fueling terrorism and killing innocents. She's now partnering with Hillary Clinton, who oversaw the drone campaign,” said one user.
“She exposed her double standards with Palestine and can safely be called a pawn for the imperial powers.”
Suffs has made its Broadway debut amid tension and fierce criticism of the country's unwavering support and arming of Israel’s war in Gaza as the US gears up for presidential elections later this year. Israel's assault has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians, 70 percent of whom are women and children.
In February, UN experts said they had received reports of Palestinian female detainees being subjected to “multiple forms of sexual assault” in Israeli detention since 7 October. The experts added that hundreds of Palestinian women and girls have been arbitrarily detained since the war started. ✍️ by: Mera Aladam

It's actually almost impossible to be in a position to want to openly call out Israel, call it wrong for the way it has treated Palestinians for almost the whole time it's existed, without calling for Israel to be destroyed, and to be against American antisemitism because it feels like that category doesn't exist?
I think:
Zionism is the belief that Jews are native to the Levant and deserve self-determination in their homeland
Israel deserves to exist just like any other country
Israel has been abusing Palestinians for decades and should be held responsible for this abuse
Israel is the one with power between Israel and Palestine
Hamas is a violent antisemitic terrorist group and benefits no one
American leftists have become violently antisemitic since Oct 7th
Israel has lived in fear of the surrounding Arab states since its founding while also abusing its Palestinian neighbors, which further fuels hatred against Israelis, and fans the flames of their fear. All of these statements are true. Israeli fear is valid, and Palestinian anger is valid, too. The antisemitism of the surrounding countries isn't valid, and they're a big player in this conflict too.
So I guess, if that's your belief set too, let's be friends?
Reblogs are on for now, unless people start to get antisemitic...
Israel is wrong about a lot of things. It needs major reform as a country. It owes Palestinians reparations. Netanyahu needs to be removed from office along with all of his right-wing friends. Settlements in the West Bank need to cease, Israeli military presence needs to be withdrawn, and a long-term land-back initiative needs to be enacted, one that doesn't involve kicking people out of their homes right now, but rather returning that land and property to Palestinians after the Israelis currently living there move out. Israel could absolutely incentivize Israelis to move back into Israeli territory if they wanted to, just like they incentivized them to move into Palestine in the first place. I also think Israel's forced draft is wrong and should stop. The Kahanists and extremist settlers need to be dealt with. The current government of Israel does not want to do any of the above. This is a problem.
Hamas is wrong. Their only goal is the eradication of Jews and Israel; they currently do not have an ideology that contributes to peace in the region. They refuse to cooperate with other Palestinians trying to form an actual government. They got elected on the anger of abused Gazans and then stole that power and have never given it back. They treat the citizens of Gaza like pawns, they put them in harm's way because they know every Palestinian death at the hands of the IDF makes them support Hamas more. Gazans deserve freedom from Israel AND from Hamas.
Palestine deserves the 1967 borders back. It deserves a strong, unified government that represents its people fairly. They can't do that with organizations like Hamas undermining them at every turn. Netanyahu is partially to blame for this! He didn't create Hamas but he has admitted to supporting them, another reason he needs to be gone from power.
There is hate on both sides. Personally, a lot of Palestinian hate is understandable given how they've been abused since the Nakba. I get it. I get why Gazans voted for Hamas for the same reason I get why Americans voted for Trump. I empathize with Gazans; Israel has been undeniably abusing them for decades, even after "withdrawing". Gazans just want to be free. West Bank Palestinians just want to be free, to have their land back. Palestinians deserve freedom.
On the other hand, it's unfair to ignore that a lot of the hate aimed at Israelis is specifically antisemitism and that many groups and countries in the area are using antisemitism to inflame Palestinian anger. Hamas is one such group. So is Hezbollah. Both are funded by the surrounding Arab states, which are also fueled by antisemitism. These countries didn't want Israel established in the first place - not because it was colonialism, but because it would be Jewish.
And on the subject of colonialism, no, I don't think a Jewish state in the Levant is inherently colonialism. I DO think that the modern state of Israel was established through the mechanisms and violence of settler colonialism though, and the settlements in the West Bank absolutely ARE settler expansionism. They are immoral. They are stealing from Palestinians. There is a lot of harm Israel has committed, period.
I hold Israel responsible for its treatment of Palestinians. For treating Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza like second-class citizens. For occupying their land, for allowing "legal" and illegal settlements on their land. I hold Israel responsible for the anger of Palestinians, too. Organizations like Hamas probably would have come into existence regardless of how Israel treated Palestinians, because Hamas is founded on antisemitism, however, I think you do have to place at least a little blame on Israel.
I hold the surrounding states responsible for their antisemitic treatment of Israel. For funding the endless rockets of Hamas and Hezbollah. For encouraging their suicide bombers and terrorism. For keeping the region destabilized so Israelis never know a single moment of peace. There is a reason Israel forces its citizens to join the military, even though I think that is in and of itself an immoral thing to do to your people.

(content warning: outdated terms, use of the term "white trash")
I did some really interesting research on the origin and the history of the term white trash. I've been aware of the term for years now though initially I thought that this word was a recently coined word and had emerged in the '50s and '60s or something. But come to find out, the term white trash actually stems as far back as the 1800s and was used to refer to poor, working class Irish, Scottish and German immigrants that immigrated to the United States in search for work and faced a lot of classism, casteism, discrimination and xenophobia from white rich upper class bourgeoisie American elites. This was identified as an epidemic by African American abolitionists and civil rights activists and this isn't surprising considering what we as black people have had to go through and still go through in this country, so obviously there's also been a deep solidarity there (and considering what British colonialism's done to both Africans/African Americans and the Irish and how British colonialism was the catalyst for upper class white supremacy, casteism, classism and xenophobia that afflicted America and the rest of the world, it makes sense). Also, many of white upper class bourgeoisie Americans that were also slave owners would weaponize and exploit enslaved black people they had working for them as pawns to spy on, scrutinize, criticize and look down upon the "poor, bad, white trash whites" as the ultimate agenda for upper class white supremacists to make themselves and their concept of aspirational whiteness look better, and while manipulatively brainwashing and gaslighting enslaved black folks into developing a classism and racism fueled stockholm syndrome attachment to their slave owners in the process.
(I'll just put a pin on this for later. 📌)
Now fast forward centuries later with the rise in right wing conservative MAGA extremism and Donald Trump, and upper class right wing white supremacists are pandering to that very demographic of middle class, middle working class, lower class, lower working class and poor white Americans (y'know, the very people and demographic that upper class white elites would call white trash!) by constantly promising social, financial and economic change and improvement. And that very demographic of people, being desperate for change and having also had fatigue and disillusionment with white liberals and white liberalism's empty promises of democracy and socio-economic improvement that didn't come to fruition along with bad experiences of white liberal classism, take the bait and switch over to becoming full on pawns for upper class right wing conservative white supremacists and their propaganda, and that in turn further coming with a Faustian exchange for being pitted against people of color and enabling/fueling the agenda of racism and white supremacy. And any part of middle class, middle working class, lower class, lower working class and poor white American demographic that sees right through all of this (both in terms of the ultimate agenda of racism and white supremacy and patronizing, hypocritical and backhanded classist pandering for ulterior motives) and refuses to go along with it and even calls it out and resists and stands to fight against it, they become public enemy #1 in the eyes of upper class right wing conservative white supremacists, whose convenient masks then fall off and they decide to remind this demographic how they really feel about them and smear and attack their character. And meanwhile, any Black, Brown, Native and Indigenous individuals of color (many of whom have also had fatigue and disillusionment with white liberalism and exhaustion with white liberal racism, classism and white saviorism) that decide to feed into, go along with and promote right wing conservative extremist propaganda are people whom upper class right wing conservative white supremacists use as pawns to police, scrutinize, criticize and look down upon "poor, bad, trashy, woke, race traitor" whites in order for upper class right wing conservative white supremacists and their concept of aspirational whiteness look better while manipulatively brainwashing and gaslighting BIPOC into developing a classism and racism fueled stockholm syndrome attachment to their political and social slave owners as well as hypocritically reinforcing the very same tactics of weaponized political identity politics, victimhood, performative pandering, identity politics and virtue signaling that right wing conservatives love to constantly accuse liberals of doing even though conservatives do that just as much. Does all this sound familiar? 📌
History repeats itself, and nobody wins.
And for me, learning all of this was insightful and radically eye opening for me as a woman of color (WOC), because even though I kept in my mindset the reality that anybody can be guilty of displaying racism and anybody can be a victim of racism, this particular issue was an eye opener because it shows that just as Black, Brown, Native and Indigenous culture, history, traditions, etc. is complex and layered and folks of these communities face marginalization, whiteness in this particular context can be complex and layered with its own history of marginalization too.
As you can tell, I'm not a fan of conservatives or liberals. Granted, I have a deeper anger, disgust, exhaustion and distrust towards the conservative party and conservatism due to my decades long experiences of being bombarded with and exposed to right wing conservative and right leaning centrist propaganda and talking points along with the gaslighting, racism, antiblackness, xenophobia, sexism, misogyny, antisemitism, reverse psychology, manipulation, intellectual dishonesty and mental gymnastics and overall mentally, emotionally, verbally, psychologically and socially abusive, messed up, extreme and cultish behavior that comes with it, though I have dislike for both conservatism and liberalism. Because in regards to my deep dive into and unpacking the white trash trope and its roots in the perpetrating of casteism, classism and white supremacy, both conservatives and liberals have played a part in racist, casteist, classist and ignorant attitudes and mentalities in general but especially in regards to the mentality of looking down on poor, lower class white Americans as "white trash":
Donald Trump supporting MAGA/GOP conservatives, right leaning centrists and Republicans display this classist attitude towards what they see as the "poor, bad, woke, race traitor" whites that don't agree with or go along with their upper class racist, white supremacist extremism.
Elitist liberals and Democrats also display this classist attitude towards poor lower class white Americans who support Donald Trump and MAGA/GOP and weaponize their socio-economic backgrounds instead of just holding them accountable for their fascist actions, behavior, mindset and mentalities--and this being hypocritical considering that liberals love presenting themselves as progressive.
And I find it hilarious how people have no problem with me saying I don't like liberals but the moment I make it clear that I also don't like conservatives either, then all of a sudden it's a problem; when everything I mentioned is just a prime example of how both political parties are cults working to either placate or outright serve the establishment and are complicit and guilty in displaying these hateful attitudes, just in different nuanced ways.
Thus, all the more reason why the current American western political party that's currently in place now--Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives--need to be eradicated and abolished. It's time for it to end.
#leftism#both liberalism and conservatism stink#leftist#stand against hate#stand against classism#white trash#the American political party of Republicans and Democrats + liberalism and conservatism need to be abolished

Some things I want to change in the Penacony story arc
DISCLAIMER: *As much as I do like some parts of the Penacony arc, I feel that we should address some of the problems this particular planet has and what are the changes I would make*
- First and foremost is giving Aventurine, Boothill, Robin and Sunday melanin. The former two are Romani and Native American respectively and the latter two because they’re the only Penacony natives among the playable characters that we have and Penacony is supposed to be based off the Jazz age which is the culture for black people.
- Expand on Gallagher and Misha a little more rather than just have them be plot expositors.
- Give Misha more scenes in between 2.1-2.2 and foreshadow the Ena’s Dream thing a little more.
- Sparkle and Aven can still have a rivalry with each other but make Sparkle less racially insensitive and instead have her remark about Aven’s position within the Ten Stonehearts like she can call him ‘Stoneheart boy’ or something fun, pompous but demeaning like ‘Stonehead’ or something. (Sorry not good with that but I just wanted something to go along with her playful and devious nature)
- The plan that Ratio and Aven cooked up against Sunday was a pretty good plot but like with Sparkle, have Ratio’s (initial) insult against Aven regarding his race and heritage be removed. (I mean even if it was just an act put up by both men, I still think it’s disingenuous of Hoyo to make one character insult another character’s race and heritage)
- Black Swan is alright so far so she can stay.
- Same goes for Acheron too since she’s pretty good so far.
- Firefly and SAM are also in a good position so they can stay too.
- I would cut out some unecessary portion of the story during 2.1-2.2.
- Gopher Wood should’ve been the main villain that the AE crew should’ve fought against. Much as I enjoy Sunday being an antagonist, I think he would’ve worked better as being Gopher Wood’s pawn and with the help of the AE and Robin, they would band together to stop him.
- Gopher Wood’s defeat would be an antithesis of Cocolia’s defeat. Instead of someone who was manipulated by the Stellaron for a decade, regaining some conscious and heroically sacrifice herself, Gopher Wood would be defeated by the AE train (lol) and be deleted permanently.
- Of course, despite banding together, Sunday would still be taken in by the IPC because he is still responsible for the villainy and all that. (Robin’s mini sidequest post 2.2 would still be kept and still acknowledge just how little she knew about the things Sunday went through due to her work and all that)
- I’m okayish on Aventurine’s character and but not the racism behind it in his backstory and such. I do wish to change it but I’ll just leave it to Aven mains to cook up something so as long as it doesn’t involve racism in it.
- Speaking of Aven, I’m not going to lie when I said I was underwhelmed that the Cornerstones for Jade and Topaz doesn’t have the same power that Aven has but I still think they should have some kind of transformative power when they activate it.
- Like Jade’s for example. When she activated it, she should have some sort of reptilian features to showcase her snake motif and maybe like a third ‘eye’.
- Not to sure on Topaz since we don’t see what her Cornerstone power is like so I’ll probably leave it alone.
- Also, I would revamp some parts of the sidequests like the Cocona and Tiozanic sidequest for example.
- With Cocona’s, I wouldn’t add the option to let her commit su*cid3 and instead have the player convince her to follow her dreams. Oh and rename her into something (that doesn’t sound racist and colorist) more convenient like Rhonda for example.
- Tiozanic is fine but I wouldn’t let the aftermath of the sidequest have someone taking over her role, like yeah she was decent person initially but she still committed gen0c*d3 and is a terrorist despite being ‘changed’.
#rubi’s post#honkai star rail#hsr critical#meta#ramblings#re write#just something I want to throw around#feel free to agree or disagree with me#but those are just my thoughts so far on the Penacony arc#it was decent and ok for me#but I would like it to improve a little

I've noticed this about you – Trying to pick up and understand things referenced in The English, pt. 1/2
So, I just watched Amazon's new miniseries The English at the beginning of this year, and while enjoying the it immensely I couldn't help but to notice that, besides historical facts and details, there were undercurrents in it that I just wasn't getting. I decided to do some research and came across pretty interesting things. Lots of thought has went into the making of this series. I've divided my findings in two parts. This first part is about general stuff.
Eli's a member of the Skiri/Skidi-Federation, one of the four bands (or groups) of the Pawnee people. Also known as the Wolf Pawnee or Loups, the Skiri used to live along the Loup and Platte river areas in Nebraska. The Skiri use a different dialect of Pawnee than the three southern bands (South band and Skiri differ mainly in pronunciation and vocabulary), but Pawnee speakers don't have trouble understanding each other. Eli's Pawnee name Ckirirahpiks is pronounced [tskirira:hpiks]. Ckirir means 'wolf' and rahpiks 'scarred.'
Recruitment of Indian scouts was first authorized in 1866 by an act of Congress. Between 1864 and 1877, 170 Pawnee men served in the "Pawnee Battalion" under Frank North (1840–1885) who had learned the Pawnee language after moving to Nebraska at the age of 16. (Interestingly, in 1882 North joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West as a manager of the American Indians.) Indian Scouts were officially deactivated in 1947 when their last member retired.
I found pictures of Pawnee scouts from 1870s in this blog post. These three pictures, taken by William Henry Jackson, were particularly interesting because you can clearly see that details of their appearance have been used as an inspiration when creating Eli's looks.
When rewatching the show I noticed that Eli was wearing an Indian peace medal. According to Trooper Charlie White, Eli was known for his heroic exploits while in the army, but - given Eli's brush off - I wonder if Eli's medal had been something he had inherited. Had his father been a chief? Still, among William Jackson's pictures there were Pawnee scouts with peace medals hanging around their necks. A Pawnee scout called Co-Rux-Te-Chod-Ish was the first Native American to receive the Medal of Honor.
Raise your hand if you really thought that Richard Watts had managed to get his hands on freshwater oysters. Perhaps this was yet another case of him "spitting in the soup."
I was super confused when Simon the squeezebox player reappeared in the last episode since I had completely forgotten about him, but I loved the colours in this scene.
"I've noticed this about you. You keep saying these negative things and you end up always doing the opposite." "Hmm, well... Maybe I should start listening to myself."
So apparently even women who have never given birth can breastfeed babies. To induce lactation you need to stimulate breasts 10–15 minutes several times a day and milk will start after a month or so. Also, of course a 'breast' would be an English word Eli couldn't have picked up naturally.
Although hunting was also an integral part of the subsistence pattern, horticulture - particularly corn - occupied a preeminent position in Pawnee life. It not only provided their sustenance but also figured prominently in their religious life.
At the beginning of the 19th century the Pawnee lived earth lodges which were large, dome-shaped structures of wood covered with packed sod and earth and had a long, narrow, covered entryway. The sizes of lodges varied in diameter from 8 to 15 metres and generally contained several families. Historical sources give varying numbers of Skiri villages, ranging from 13 to 18. Each village had its own separate identity through religious functions, but by the mid-19th century the importance of village identity began to fade as the Skiri population rapidly diminished. (Murie, J. R. and Parks, D. R. (1981) Ceremonies of the Pawnee.)
As the 19th century progressed, the Pawnee bands were forced together onto a reservation on the north side of the Platte and were treated as a single tribal entity by the United States government. Missionaries and the government worked steadily at "making white men"of the Pawnee. By 1873 because of disease, crop failure, warfare, and government rations policy, the Pawnee population had decreased to approximately 2,400. In 1875 the Pawnee were persuaded to give up their reservation in Nebraska and move to new one in the Indian Territory. By the 1876 the entire tribe had removed there, where efforts to acculturate them continued. By 1890 most of the Skiri Pawnee lived on individual farms, dressed like contemporary whites, and spoke English. (Murie, & Parks, 1981)
Bundles were an integral part of Pawnee religion and served as shrines. Among the Skiri, there were two general types of bundles. Sacred bundles, cuharîpîru, were village and band bundles and naturally more important. The oldest sacred bundle was the Evening Star bundle. The other type was referred as karûsu, a bag/sack, and was any lesser bundle – that of a warrior, a doctor, or any other individual.
I was curious about the skull in Eli's bag and using skullsite.com and Royal BC Museum's bird bone identification guide I was able to identify it. Given that Pawnee villages used to be located along rivers, it not surprising that that the skull Eli treasured would belong to an osprey aka fish hawk.
Ospreys differ from most hawks by having short prefrontals.
Round and almost circular nasal (nostril).
Has perforation in sheet of bone between eyes.
Particularly curved bill.
Frontal’s width stays even.
I always like it when a show makes me curious and inspires me to learn something new, in this case to determine cardinal directions using the sun. I used the instructions in this post to make the collage of Eli determining the compass points.
#the english 2022#the english#pawnee scouts#indian peace medal#cornelia used 'please.' it's super effective.#the bird skull in eli's bundle#compass points#eli whipp

This rare and beautiful vintage Mother of Pearl “Wagon Wheel” set is made in the “Dishta style“. Colleagues that specialize in Zuni jewelry say it was likely made by Zuni couple, Matthew and Rosemary Lidase. Rosemary is a close relative to the legendary master of channel inlay, Frank Dishta (1902-1954) who passed his skills on to family members. The Dishta Style is comprised of circles and…

Regarding Heroes depicting Edelgard looking for pawns with a “low sense of self.” A sense of self, or rather an understanding of who you are, is something important to have. It allows us to be ourselves, as we know what comes from us and what comes from others. That I genuinely believe A, B, and C and therefore support those rather than supporting X, Y and Z because I see others supporting them. Or to use a literary example, this is rampant in American Psycho as it's characters are so caught up in appearances that they dress like buffoons because it's supposedly fashionable, eat foods they like because it's trendy, buy art they don't understand to look sophisticated and spout beliefs they don't believe because society tells them they are correct. This all leads to Patrick Bateman either being or imagining himself as a serial killer in order to feel like an individual in such a conformist society (with the novel having clues he's not the only one doing this.
Ironically, Edelgard says this to Jeritza who she uses for the Death Knight. She took Emile killing to save his mother and sister and twisted that, leading to a man with severe mental illness that is degrading his mind and a desire to die in order to stop his “other self.” Not to mention, her calling a man she's admitting to using a pawn. And considering that Edelgard is dressed up as the Flame Emperor in this, which is also her ending title, this likely reflects what her actual views are.
Jeritza, Hubert, Monica, even Byleth aren't friends or allies, as she continues to believe that she is all alone in this struggle and fails to see their contributions for what they actually are. Edelgard merely sees them as pawns, tools she can shape to do whatever she wants. That's her going after those will low senses of self. Hell, this is her attempt at consoling Byleth after Jeralt's death. Hell, if you think about it the decision to join Edelgard ultimately comes down to ignoring Byleth's default stance, the morality they would have otherwise gained in White Clouds, in order to side with Edelgard. We disregard Byleth's character by deciding to support Edelgard.
And this is something that really clicked. Remember Seteth's infamous line about how Edelgard is not merely a tyrant? I think this is what it's referring to. She is not a mere tyrant, she's something worse. She does something to people in a less literal manner than TWSITD, she turns people into animals.
Her path is called out in the Japanese text by Dimitri as the path of the beast, which relating to Buddhist terms means that it's a path of ignorance, delusion or foolishness. Animals don't operate on morality or reason, they operate on instinct where the strong prey on the weak and the weak fear the strong. We can see a reflection of this in the parley, where when challenged on the world she seeks to create only benefiting the strong Edelgard in turn blames the weak if her world doesn't benefit them. Meanwhile, the world of humans is where souls can exercise self-control, not falling prey to their instincts and instead act in a humane manner. And it's from the world of humans that you can start working towards Nirvana, but without control a soul can fall back into one of the lower realms. It's the route where Byleth spiritually regresses, and in Azure Moon we see Edelgard turn herself into a beast unit as supposedly the end point of her ideals.
Now think about the “low sense of self” in the context of this. By siding with Edelgard, Byleth loses their paralogue where Rhea leaves behind her shield because Byleth ended up betraying Rhea. On top of that, Ferdinand and Caspar lose theirs as well despite being native to the Black Eagle class. Those paralogues and their rewards are lost to the player, in addition to how Ferdinand can not be confronted with his father being blamed for Arundel's actions or Caspar can't prove his strength against the Death Knight he wanted to bring down. Linhardt supports a bloody war despite hating bloodshed, Bernie is so scared she resolves herself to kill others before they can kill her, Petra fights to enslave two nations to free her own from the Empire, and Dorothea will support Edelgard's fuck the poor mentality while blaming Sothis for the war Edelgard started. And that's not counting the optional recruits to Safflower.
They lose some of who they are when they side with Edelgard, and I don't think they're the only ones. When Edelgard sets up the Southern Church in Hopes with a wildly different gospel, it's noted in game that it appeals to people who didn't like what the Church of Seiros taught. And we also know that the Imperial army kills everyone who doesn't bend the knee, and according to the Japanese text go out of control while invading other nations post-war. Edelgard's influence is turning people into animals, making them lose whatever morality they had as well as their ability to reason. Like at the end of Safflower, some of the cast realize that Edelgard is lying to them and keeping things secret while blaming the Church for Arianrhod but they still support her to the end. Even characters who reject Edelgard's beliefs and instead still practice altruism still supported her in making Fodlan Ayn Rand's wet dream.
The last chapter being called “To the end of a dream” ending with the cutscene where Rhea is killed called “A world for humanity” though. I believe those are ultimately related to this. It's not that Edelgard kills Rhea and ushers in an era of humanity, it's that by killing Rhea and replacing Sothis's teachings with her own beliefs, Edelgard is ending the world of humanity as she pushes Fodlan back into the world of animals. That in doing so, Edelgard takes away teachings that teach morality or reasoning in order to impose her own will upon Fodlan. The will that would lead her to becoming the Hegemon Husk while still believing she's doing this for “humanity.” But her ideals are implied to have come from the Agarthans manipulating her into creating a world for them, and to the Agarthans “beasts” are anyone who is a non-Agarthan because they view themselves as the only true humans. But at the same time, they do not act in a humane manner or are self-aware enough to realize their fall from grace was a consequence of their own actions (much like Edelgard). In essence, the people calling others beasts are the real beasts themselves.
It's the subversion here. Much like how you need to rescue the dragon from the princess, the dragon represents humanity whereas the princess represents devolving into a mindless, immoral monster. And it took Heroes to help point it out because of the translation fucking things up.

Career Breakdowns: Muu's Employment at a Brothel Edition. Part One.
Background information pertaining to the business in which he is employed by:
Name: Cracked Saddle. It was through his own curiosity that Muu came to learn that the name is intended to be a reference to many different things. One of which includes the fact that the ongoing matters within the establishment invoke the assumption that all used and worn out in a matter akin to a cracked saddle would come about in time and longevity of usage. Another is that of the observation that saddles are prone to cracking due to the conditions presented in frequently riding a horse. The bit about riding was really all that the owner of the establishment needed to go forward with when he put his time and money into an establishment centered on men primarily servicing other men.
The Boss himself: Cracked Saddle is ran by a surprisingly very kindhearted man by the name of Bertram Wild Okabe, a born and raised third generation American who's family lineage remains distantly connected to Japan. Having spent his childhood in the deep south of the United States, he grew to form an appreciation of the aesthetics and values behind the culture Native American communities in the vicinity. Lessons taught to him as a boy by those kind of enough to take his spiritedness curiosity under their wing have carried with him as an a middle aged man who's focus in life is to tend to those less fortunate than himself. In his prime, travels about the Earth in search of meaning and home amongst the vastness of the planet, brought him face to face with witnessing the tribulations faced by young men on the streets, more lost than himself. No matter where his impulsiveness and yearning to live life to his fullest, conversations had with those in a state of adolescence that mirrored his own would stick with him the most. Enough so in fact that on returning to where he felt not just the most like himself, but also the most in tune with the heart of rhe universe around him, he took to building a property in which he could facilitate a safe space to exist for likely those some young men turned to adults after years of surviving on the streets with a limited education on much else than utilizing intimate encounters as a means for money to be spent on food and supplies for making it though the day out on the streets. For him, the goal has never been to stop sex work from taking place. Instead, he solely intends on maintaining an environment in which those in community can come seek out an avenue for their urges that doesn't include going out onto the streets to scope out the barely above children that shouldn't be out on them in the first place. If those employed under him were asked what sort of connection does he functionally maintain with all of the men working at Cracked Saddle, the answer would unanimously be that he makes each of them feel loved by him entirely. Never would he allow for any of them be subject to harm, or to venture forward with an act with an individual they did not fully provide their consent towards in the first place. While it may be an objectifying business, he himself makes no point to make those working for him feel that way under his gaze by any means. Never does he offer pity either. These are people arguably more brave than he could ever consider himself to ever be, so why would he have thought to glance upon them as if they were merely pawns to profit from? The only instances in which he has thought to send harm any of their ways is out of punishment for referring to him as a fuddy duddy. Yes, he may be a stickler for rules; however, he was once cool in the face of danger well before some of the men in his care could even walk and talk. As the person who writes out their business reports at the end of each month, was it really all that much to ask for consistent respect?
General Information of Big Bertram himself:
Name: Bertram Wild Okabe.
Nicknames: Wild Card by most, as well as Bertie / Birdy / Ram-man by a specific, strange named employee of his known as Muu.
Age: 48
Birthday: January 16th, 1976.
Height: 160cm / 6ft3in
Sex & Gender: Male. Though he welcomes all identities with open arms, he himself doesn't associate himself with anything other than being an ordinary cismale.
Sexuality: Pansexual. A self described lover of all. His preference, though, lies with women. It just remains unfortunate that he can not settle with one as his far too independent lifestyle prevents him from complete commitment. In regards to position in the bedroom for those with dirty, curious minds, Bertram is a full-fledged top. Submissiveness in that way has never been in his demeanor and he has no plans for that to change at any point in the near or distant future.
Relationship status and children: Chronically single and none that he knows of for the time being. The likelihood of such is high, but not yet confirmed. He'd love to be a parent, though, so such an opportunity would be welcomed by him should such occur naturally in his life any time soon.

“However, the "international" character of the Zionist activities did not altogether suit the British imperialists. Anxious to seize Palestine in order to safeguard British interests In the Middle East, they decided to utilize the Zionist leaders for this purpose, luring them with the promise to establish a Jewish State in Palestine.
The Zionist leaders were quite willing to harness themselves to the chariot of British imperialism[…]”

thoughts ?
my thoughts are wooooow you mean jews believed people who lied to them and said they wanted to help them establish a home in their native land just to use them as pawns? that sounds like those jews were soooo evil. sdfghjkl framing it like the leaders at the time were jumping at the chance to ally with the british for some secretly nefarious reason, when the formation of israel as we know it today occurred during/after some of the darkest fucking times in jewish history is quite the choice. maybe they did have their own selfish or not good reasons. I don’t really care. the jews who survived the holocaust and needed to go home didn’t.
if the american government started a project to give land back to our indigenous population here and helped them establish their own country/territory/etc. we’d see it as a good thing, no matter who was mad or who it displaced. we’d tell people to suck it up because “the land belongs to them”. and I don’t support displacing people, but I do think it’s interesting how it’s framed as evil when the jews do it in their own homeland but not any other indigenous population, because for those the other people are seen as the colonizers. but here, jews are the colonizers while the people who kicked them out and stole their homes get to stay no questions asked. it’s a fucking weird double standard.

July 11 - Taipei
What a week! It's hard to believe that it's Thursday already. Even though I checked into our hotel last night, I am still jet lagged, tired, and feel stiff. I also met some others from my group in the airport, so I was less alone than I thought. I even went exploring with two people that I met on the flight!
This morning, I had breakfast at our hotel. I have never eaten food like what I ate this morning. I am not exactly sure what the name of everything is, but it wasn't bad - just very different from a classic American breakfast. Our group had a buffet dinner tonight to celebrate our first day, and once again there were so many new things. The sweet items have a different type of sweetness than the US- it tastes more like what I would expect from a natural sweetener. With the exception of fried food, everything here feels just a little bit lighter. They also serve the option of rice with every meal.
We all have MRT passes now, which lets us travel on the Taipei metro (and other select areas) for the next 30 days. Today we traveled to the older part of the city. This area is closer to Danshui River, where the city originated. There are many young people in this part of town. They have a large building called "Party World" nearby that is mostly just karaoke - they take it very seriously, like people practice days before. Taiwan is also the first and only Asian country to legalize same sex marriage and continues to be a country with many freedoms that rival those of the US. The support, especially in this part of the city, was very evident.
We also visited a daoist temple and the nearby night market (it was not night when we went, they were still setting up). The temple was dedicated to Mazu, goddess of the sea. When the first settlers of Taiwan came from China, crossing the Taiwan Strait was a dangerous feat. People pray to her because it is thought to grant them protection and good luck. I have never been to a temple like that. People wait in lines to pray while their incense slowly burns. Taiwan has never had religious conflict. Everyone is very accepting and that's pretty cool. I suspect this is because of the external conflict that plagues Taiwan. People have to come together to learn to live with different rules - they don't have the energy to bicker about internal affairs like religion. Our tour guide mentioned that with four generations, his family speaks four different native tongues: Japanese, Taiwanese, Mandarin Chinese, and English. I think that speaks to the trauma Taiwan has faced on a global scale, particularly because it has been pawned off to many countries.
Today, I learned a lot. It's only the first day, and I will be learning so much more too. I'm very tired, but I will make my first official post tomorrow!
