Do you think benedetto was born evil? Because no matter who raises him in eney version, be it Caderousse , Bertuccio , vampa , Jacopo and the pirate crew or even decent people like the staff at the orphanage in the 1974 movie he turns out jerkish.

i think it depends on which version you're looking at. every single adaptation of tcomc has a different author, even if they're basing their work off of the same source material. how those authors interpret and write the same character is naturally going to differ so i don't want to lump them all together.

for the original book, though, i'd say yes. according to bertuccio, benedetto was a pretty awful child right off the bat, and he doesn't have any particular redeeming qualities in the book. i think dumas intends it to be a reflection of the circumstances of his birth - particularly the fact that his biological father is, you know, villefort.

in real life, though, i'm not so sure that anyone is really evil from birth in the way benedetto is. so if someone has a different personal interpretation of his character because of that, i think it could have some merit.

😭😭😭 I would love to say yes, but honestly, I have two jobs and still struggle with bills. Half the time I can't even afford to pay attention. Hopefully, some day. I am pretty close to the end of it. I think last I updated that I intended one more chapter and maybe an epilogue. But finding the time & energy combo to get it done is where my main struggle is.

yeah basically, it would be messy. You could definitely read a narrative about cycles of family trauma into Book 3 which is very interesting to me... poor Tuba, and oh Simon.

Been a while but I'm back, and with a book rant because I'm finally finishing up The Count Of Monte Cristo, so spoiled warning for chapters 109-112!

Okay so, we get Andrea who was going to marry Eugenie Danglars but ends up getting arrested for fraud and Eugenie ran away with her friend but was brought back.*

Only for Andrea to reveal at the trial that he is the biological child of the judge, Monsieur De Villefort and Baroness Danglars so technically, he was going to marry his half sister had no one interfered with the marriage.

But Villefort thought he was stillborn and ended up burying him alive, and his enemy thought he was burying money and stabbed him and dug up the grave, only to find a newborn Andrea and was like "Wait he's alive-" and dumped him at an orphanage where he was adopted and raised by Italian pirates.

And now out of just being petty, Andrea is like "This ain't about me right now-" and shifted his fraud trial to focus on the judge and how he needs to be charged with attempted murder.

Oh! And this also means that he's the half brother of Valentine and Edward De Villefort as well, basically making both families united by being a bastard child.

Also, the comments made by everyone in the room are SAVAGE.

to some extent, yeah. i mean, bertuccio raised benedetto, and he's a pretty decent guy - definitely not the type who could just stop caring all of a sudden. he probably has some traces of attachment to benedetto. at the same time, this is the guy who murdered his sister-in-law, who he was clearly very close to. the fact that he hates interacting with benedetto and wants him brought to justice doesn't mean that he's just forgotten what it felt like to hold that baby in his arms. he obviously feels more negatively towards benedetto than anything else, but he's probably conflicted about it deep down.

also, i don't actually know what modern AU fic you're referencing? i don't have any intention of writing a modern AU fic about bertuccio and/or benedetto, and i don't remember ever saying i did haha

But on the inside he's probably just forcing himself to smile and act friendly because Caderousse is his neighbor.

Did contacts exist in the 1800s becose benedetto has blue eyes but I found a version of the book online where as andrea his eyes are briefly described as black for a moment.?

it seems like contact lenses were invented in the 1880s and colored contacts were invented in the 1930s, so no, they wouldn't have existed yet when tcomc takes place (or even when it was written).

dumas is kind of just... not the most consistent person ever. there are tons of inconsistencies and contradictions in the character ages in tcomc, so i don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that he'd forget a character's eye color in between chapters. or maybe that particular translation just translated it wrong!

What does tp mean in your crossover art?

i assume you're talking about this piece of fan art that i reblogged? in that case, this isn't actually my art - i just reblogged it, and the original artist is @aira-l, who makes really fantastic tcomc fan art (and other great art besides)!

i'm fairly certain tp stands for treasure planet, and the AU is a crossover between tcomc and the movie treasure planet. but any other questions would be for them!

Have you heard of or seen sonic underground? It's a series where sonic the 🦔 and his siblings (Sonia and manic) are separated from each other because robotnic attack their home. Sonic is sent to a middle class family , Sonia is raised by a rich woman and manic was left on someone's doorstep but his basket was stolen and he grew up with thieves. He reminds me of a nicer version of benedetto(benedetto murdered people and manic is a pick pockuet) because both are found by criminals as babies and grow up being considered sorta adopted sons of those criminals. Father figures: bertuccio and Ferrell.

i haven't seen sonic underground, but i know the basics about its premise (mostly through trailers i saw on dvds i had as a kid, but also because i've heard people talk about it a little bit since then). i can definitely see some similarity in backstory! a pick pocket is definitely significantly better than benedetto's laundry list of crimes, lmao. i like benedetto a lot but he's certainly one of the more evil characters in the book

Aww 😍. Nice fic but can you explain some things? Is this an au? , why does villefort call danglars his brother in law? (Are they passing each other off as relatives of their wives or going with the he's a friend who married my daughter/son to his kid or some other excuse?)

hi! sorry for in my lateness answering this ask - i've been too busy to sit down and go through my ask box for the last few days.

i assume you're talking about my fic we are alone and all we need! i wrote that a bit over a year ago as a sequel to an older and much longer fic of mine, Ixion and Sisyphus, so reading that might provide some context.

the basic premise, though, is that these fics take place after the end of the book. i would describe them as technically canon-compliant continuations of danglars' and villefort's lives after edmond is done with them, but you could read them as AU fics if you have a different interpretation of post-canon.

danglars winds up establishing himself in a small village with what money he has left and uses the tailoring knowledge he picked up from caderousse decades ago to start a tailor business. not long after this, he wakes up one night to find that villefort has been dumped on his doorstep by edmond; this forces danglars to learn how to care for another person as an extension of his punishment and edmond-enforced character development, and it also gives villefort somewhere better to stay than where he would otherwise be imprisoned as a "madman." their dynamic develops from there.

as for why danglars refers to villefort as his brother-in-law, it's essentially because someone else in town happened to ask danglars once who villefort was, and danglars, knowing how abnormal it is for two unrelated old men to live together, came up with an excuse on the fly. his story is that villefort is the husband of danglars' sister, and that some tragic circumstance led to the death of her and their children. villefort is staying with danglars in the aftermath. although, of course, neither of them go by their real names in town.
