🍷 Happy Zinfandel Day! We had the privilege to enjoy a visit @harmonywynelands in @visitlodi this summer where we spent some time meandering through their old vine zinfandel vineyard. . Though old vine zin is something that has helped make Lodi a destination wine region, many growers in recent years have made the difficult decision to pull up the oldest, less yielding, more difficult to farm and harvest vines in favor of planting new ones that are easier to manage and have higher grape yields at harvest. 🌱 . Every decision has its trade-offs, especially with farming and the wine world. . We recognize and appreciate the opportunities to connect with these older vineyards while they still exist and enjoy the layers of flavors their grapes gift us. 🍇 . National Zinfandel Day! * Despite various theories over the decades, DNA evidence now tells us Zinfandel hails from Croatia. * Believed to have been first planted in California in the 1850s, there are vines well over 100 years old in Amador country and Sonoma. There is no legal definition of “old vine,” but 40+ year old vines are typically considered old by winemakers. * Zinfandel ages gracefully. When well-made, it has the structure to improve in age like a Cabernet. * It has wings! Well, it has a “wing” which is like a second, smaller bunch growing off to one side. * White Zin saved it. In 1972, Sutter Home famously created their extremely popular White Zinfandel. While some wine lovers consider this an “entry level” wine, we have this pink pleaser to thank for today’s wonderful old-vine Zins. On National Zinfandel Day, i though SOMEONE should post an “original” Zinfandel. 😉 As most of you know by now, Zinfandel is not in fact an American grape. This varietal originated in Croatia and there it is called Tribidrag or Crljenak Kastelanski. And a super duper fun fact that I learned today from @winefolly is that only 71,000 acres of Zinfandel are planted worldwide and a majority is in the US (roughly 50,300 acres). Que tal? Mettler Family 2014 Epicenter ‘Old Vine’ Zinfandel (SRP $25): This Zinfandel is intense, well-rounded, has a big personality—turning it up to eleven (if you know what I mean). Aromas of toasted spice, sweet oak tones, and smoked meat frame blackberry preserve, purple stone fruit, and brown baking spices. The tannins beg for red meat grilled over hot coals. I personally wish I had an order of burnt-ends as I wrap up this note.
