There’s a buzz on the streets. The country is in the state of emergency. South Africa is in crisis.
Tumblr media
The #Nationalshutdown was in motion yesterday, 25 Aug. 2022. Workers took to the streets and marched in the streets of Durban, KwaZulu-Natal , South Africa. They delivered a memorandum of demands to the premiers office .
The national shutdown is a result of the pressing issues that have affected the lives of many South Africans. The fuel hike, rise in food prices and the pandemic of gender based violence have angered South Africans. They are calling on government to bring about change in a country where the gap between the haves and the have nots remains big .
Unemployment rate is rocket high and the South African youth is left out in the cold . The 2024 elections are around the corner and South Africans are calling for change .

Nationalshutdown: Saftu calls on working class to ‘mobilise or die’
The SA Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) has chosen 24 August as a tentative date for a one-day national shutdown in response to an array of issues, including worsening living standards, load shedding and jobs bloodbath. It is believed that South African youth are not particularly active in terms of politics when the certain student issues arose, they became active through the use of social media, such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. t is normalized and understood that people define themselves according to the social groups that they affiliate themselves with and alienate those who do not fit within their particular social group, those who they affiliate themselves with are known as the ‘in-group’ and those who do not share their sentiments and qualities are known as the ‘out-group.’ These particular groupings are determined by innate factors (i.e. gender, sex) or arbitrary factors (where you were born, which soccer team you support.) This principle has been the backbone of social activism movements such as the #RhodesMustFall movement as well as the #FeesMustFall movement. #RhodesMustFall started because a student activist at the University of Cape Town threw faeces at the statue of Cecil Rhodes as a comment on the lack of transformation at the university as well as to illustrate the continued fight against racism, colonial thinking and white privilege. Thousands of students who felt that they resonated with the actions of said student activist then joined the movement through the use of social media, twitter in particular, by starting the hashtag #RhodesMustFall which then lead to the nationwide shutdown of all universities and the hashtag #Nationalshutdown trended amongst students all over the country in an attempt to support their fellow UCT counterparts in their movement. The #RhodesMustFall and #Nationalshutdown then gave way to the nationwide strike of students for ten percent fee increment for the year 2016 through the use of the #FeesMustFall movement. This movement made waves through Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms such that videos like Luister from the students at the University of Stellenbosch was released onto YouTube where it has accumulated 375 000 views from individuals worldwide. Quality education continues to be accessed by the rich and privileged, and not the poor black child. The main reason for this is access to higher education continues to only be accessed by those who have money and the resources for it, which happens to be the majority of white people living in South Africa, and the more educated one is, the more likely one is to be economically empowered. According to Bosch, social media has created a new way of protesting without having to physical be in the space of the movement – “what is clear is that social media has facilitated protest participation by increasing opportunities for engagement in collective action” what many seem to forget on social media is that the dominant opinion (on social media) is not always going to be the popular opinion in real life, for instance, there was a huge backlash from many people who were not students during the #FeesMustFall protest stating that they were not particularly for the cause of the movement, one may even go as far as to state that the government as well as university administration were against the entire movement hence the violence and damaging of property as there were a clash in opinions, one wanting to be more dominant over the other and vis-à-vis. According to Ngcebetsha, although today’s youth are not fighting for the same things that were fought by the youth of 1976, our young people need to redirect their focus to personal and socioeconomic development of the country, in line with the vision towards a free South Africa in which the youth assume an active role as agents of change, reconstruction and development. Social media as a whole puts pressure on people to live according to a certain societal code and if you choose not to live according to this code, you are seen as being part of the ‘out-group. Discourse and counter-discourse are linked with the fact that the youth are believed to be passive participants of politics but through the use of new media there has been a rise in youth participation in politics but it needs to be remembered that even though there is a rise in youth participation in the world around them, the rise does not necessarily equate to that being the dominant opinion of the rest of society. The role of social media during a specific trend or movement is to allow for participation in using one form or medium of communication (i.e. Twitter, Facebook) and be able to easily connect or disconnect without having to commit completely to a specific politically organised group. The problem however also arises in the fact that not many people of colour have access to these social media platforms so their voices and opinions of the matter are not heard, and truthfully speaking – their opinions may hold more weight as they are the ones suffering at the ugly hands of poverty and lack of access to resources such as fully functioning schools equipt with the right resources to assist in educating the youth. #FeesMustFall is bigger than the people who are at the forefront of the campaign as they are merely representatives of those whose voices are not heard and those who are seeking a better life but the grips of poverty are a stumbling block to achieving their goals.
