The day before yesterday I had the immense privilege of visiting #MiramarMounds #NationalNaturalLandmark with @cnpssd. This area is part of #MCASMiramar & not open to the public. It’s the largest remaining mima mound-vernal pool complex in Southern California and home to the federally endangered San Diego Fairy Shrimp and several endangered plants. #MimaMounds—named after the Mima Prairie in Washington state where they’re also found—are small, fairly uniform hummocks that give the landscape a strange bumpy texture when seen from above. Between the mounds are #vernalpools, shallow seasonal ponds that form where the soil has a nearly-impermeable hardpan underneath. Evidence suggests that the mounds are the result of generations of pocket gophers pushing dirt uphill rather than the usual downhill, which they do in places with low water tables. (Look it up, it’s fascinating!). The pools are soaking wet during the rainy season & dry as adobe bricks the rest of the year. It’s a harsh environment and the plants & animals that live in them have interesting adaptations to it. In Southern California, flat land is the favorite habitat of the highly invasive Suburban Sprawl, which has destroyed an estimated 90-97% of all vernal pool habitat. This land was spared development because it’s owned by a military base. Today in #NJhistory: The Women’s Federation Monument in Alpine, #NewJersey was dedicated #OnThisDay, April 30, 1929 to honor the role that the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs took in preserving the Palisades. In the early 19th century, quarrying had begun to take place along the Palisades and after the Civil War it intensified due to the high demand for concrete. By the 1890s, citizens in New Jersey and #NewYork began to rally in opposition of further destruction of the cliffs. In 1897, the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs joined other interested groups to fight for legislation to protect the Palisades. In 1900, as a result of their efforts, the Palisades Interstate Park Commission was formed to preserve the cliffs and shoreline. The Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is located within the townships of Chatham, Harding, and Long Hill in Morris County, #NewJersey. The Great Swamp is the remnant of the bottom of the Glacial Lake Passaic that about 15,000 to 11,000 years ago stretched approximately 30 by 10 miles. The lake was formed by the melting waters of the retreating Wisconsin Glacier at the end of the last Ice Age. Established November 3, 1960, it is one of more than 560 refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System.The refuge was established after a year-long legal battle that pitted local residents against Port Authority of New York and New Jersey officials wishing to turn the Great Swamp into a major regional airport to supplement Newark Airport's ability to accommodate large jet aircraft. The Jersey Jetport Site Association was formed in opposition to the airport and was later joined by the North American Wildlife Foundation. Together, these groups raised awareness and purchased property amounting to 2,600 acres. This land was donated to the federal government to be protected in perpetuity. The #refuge was declared a National Natural Landmark in May 1966. The eastern half of the refuge was designated as #wilderness by Congress in 1968, making it the first wilderness area within the @usinterior. Since its establishment, the Great Swamp Refuge has grown to 7,800 acres and preserves over 3,600 acres of wilderness.
