⚾️ We read The Denver Post article this past weekend about the National Ballpark Museum and couldn’t help but frame it up for Mr. Hellerstein as a gift! Thanks for being a wonderful and important part of the LoDo District community!

Antoine Samuel Predock, FAIA (June 24, 1936 – March 2, 2024)

Mr Predock was an American architect based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was the principal of Antoine Predock Architect PC, the studio he founded in 1967.

Mr Predock first gained national attention with the La Luz community in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The first national design competition he won was held by the Nelson Fine Arts Center at Arizona State University.

Mr Predock's work includes the Turtle Creek House, built in 1993 for bird enthusiasts along a prehistoric trail in Texas, the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, and a new ballpark for the San Diego Padres, the Petco Park. He also worked on international sites such as the National Palace Museum Southern Branch in Southern Taiwan and the Canadian Museum for Human Rights in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

If you don’t mind me asking how much did you spend on your thorpe’s abott trip?

no i don’t mind at all! i am NOT rich by any means to be extremely clear. i’m a full time law student and currently not working. i’m actually super stressed about money atm. i just choose to invest in my niche hobbies whereas other people might chose to invest in clothes/a bigger apartment/idk kitchen appliances lol.

i don’t remember exactly how much my we happy few ticket 506 was but i thinkkkk 350 pounds? so about 450 usd. which yeah like. youch that was some money lol. but i got to meet hang out with actors i love and go to a whole list of places i wouldn’t have been able to otherwise. and i had a discount code as a patreon member but was in such a rush i forgot to use it!

it was worth it to me. worth it enough to do again in april when they next one is 😅. and this time i won’t have to pay for my flights myself bc of british airways voucher!

i booked my flights as separate round trips INSERTHOMECITY-JFK (new york) and JFK-LHR (london). and total i think it came to around 600 almost 700? which was over 1k cheaper than my study abroad round trip to get to amsterdam! and why i was so flabbergasted when british airways gave me over 900 dollars in reimbursement for the overbooked flight debacle when my whole trip didn’t even cost that haha.

when i got to london i booked the national express shuttle to get to cambridge for about $45. i could’ve taken the tube and gotten there in about the same amount of time but i knew i was going to be exhausted and not wanting to think about public transportation in a new country. when i went back to london the night before my flight i did use the tube and had no issues w it!

i split a hotel with my friends and paid $250 total for my share, which was cheaper than it would’ve been to make my own arrangements.

i admittedly spent more than i planned on in souvenirs lol i think i got at least one thing from every base/museum we went to. ballpark i think i spent maybe just under $125 on ✨stuff✨.

food wise there was a grocery store right across from my hotel. the first day we ate lunch at the little food stand at thorpe abbotts and the second day we packed lunch. got coffee and a little pastry from gregs (like british dunkin) for breakfast each day, dinner at the RAF pub the first night and fast food dinner on my own when i had to get back to london from cambridge. so didn’t spend a ton on food tbh.

i hope this was comprehensive enough 😅 but i’m an open book haha if you have any other questions hmu (:

oh no no NO no no I am sorry my dear @thebirdtm you are NOT underselling one of the most seminal pieces of television of my entire childhood like that on MY watch.

To start with a little disclaimer, Top Gear's Hilux did not start off, as in the video above, in pristine condition. It started off with nigh-on 300k kms (for you yankees, that's about 8.4 million Boeing 737 wingspans) and a condition to match.

And it's only once careless driving around town yielded zilch in given shits...

(look, I found a local newspaper picturing it being driven around!)

...that they decided to drown it. Now, the underselling part: if you told me that they drowned a pickup the first place my mind would go to would be "driving it through a river a bit too deep for it, perhaps as deep as its height, until it stalls and then tugging it back out". You will concede that's rather different from tying it down on the seashore with the second highest tide in the world...

...and leaving it there until it engulfs the whole truck...

...only for the ropes to snap...

...and for the truck to be lost to the tides for FIVE HOURS.

(and for those wondering, yes, just as promised, well within an hour and the mandatory limits of basic tools and no spare parts, up the mechanic made the thing fire and away the presenter drove it - I must imagine doing a number on his clothes in the process.)

Oh also I would have mentioned the caravan.

Still, I feel it's criminal to leave out how they celebrated it surviving all it did: by parking it at the top of a 23 story building for all to see! :)

A powerful storm caused trees to topple in NYC

Heavy rain and strong winds caused numerous downed trees in New York City, leaving many residents without power. Arlington art museum reinvents self

New space blends immersive experiences with traditional

With 42,000 square feet of galleries, the new Arlington Museum of Art has seven times the space it previously had.

Its earlier home, a former Sears outlet in downtown Arlington, was aging.

The new digs are at the city’s former convention center, which now also houses the Esports Stadium Arlington at 1200 Ballpark Way.

“What people know of the Arlington Museum of Art — basically, you can just throw that away because this is a whole new museum,” said Chris Hightower, the museum’s president and CEO.

The new quarters mean the museum is part of the town’s entertainment district, not far from Six Flags Over Texas, the major sports stadiums and what will be the National Medal of Honor Museum.

The new facility features one gallery for community shows and emerging artists, plus a traditional gallery.

That’s where the museum has opened the traveling show, “Pompeii: The Immortal City,” which features more than 100 artifacts, re-creations and digital projections about the Roman city destroyed — and preserved — by a volcanic eruption in 79 A.D.

There is also a sizable third space dedicated solely to immersive artworks.

Such a gallery is rare for a North Texas art museum.

With all of that new space and the chance to draw crowds of out-of-towners, the museum is clearly reshaping its public presence and its artistic direction.

The immersive gallery opened with “One Point Five Degrees,” a collection of room-sized digital environments (the title comes from an intergovernmental report on climate change) by two artists.

Adam Fung, a Fort Worth-based artist and Texas Christian University professor, typically works in paint.

But he’s often addressed the environment, and for this work, “Fathom,” he used his 2023 artist residency in the Arctic to create a drone video installation.

In contrast to the wintry landscape in “Fathom,” “Floralia,” by Canadian artist Sabrina Ratté, presents a lush, layered experience via a 13-channel, hi-definition animated video environment and sound design.

“We now have three exhibition spaces that people can visit at any time. So it’s a much larger, totally new experience,” Hightower said.

Remodeling part of the old convention center and moving in was Phase 1 of the Arlington museum’s upgrade, costing $2.9 million.

In Phase 2, the museum will get a new facade and a redesigned central corridor, which it shares with Esports Stadium.

*cracks knuckles* Okay I think the main questions are where are you staying, and when are you going,? Things get harder if you don’t have a car but uber/lyft/cabs will probably be able to get you most places and Downtown is easily accessible via most public transit.

PPG Paints is on the edge of downtown and partially in the hill district. I’m not familiar with the hill district so I can’t direct you that way. If you are staying near the arena there is limited stuff but if you’re in downtown there’s the cultural district which has all of the theaters (drama/musical/orchestra, not movie theater) and the convention center. Point State Park is the point (you’ve seen the fountain in all the big helicopter/drone shots). I think it’s got a museum about the original fort but unless you care about history I’m not sure it’s worth seeking out. There’s also ice skating outdoors in market square/ppg place if you’re gonna be here between now and March? If not hunt armory is in a different neighborhood but has indoor ice skating. Also in downtown is the Milkshake Factory if you’re lucky enough to get half price Jake Rusty Shakes.

Just following my mental map of the point, across the mon is Station Square. You can get there by walking across the Smithfield street bridge or taking the T. It’s free to use within downtown to the north side in one direction and station square the other, so if you want to see the incline that’s the way to get there. The incline is the main attraction outside of restaurants and the soccer (European football) stadium. I don’t know when the riverhounds play and I know even less about our new women’s soccer team tbh. Up the incline is Mount Washington which is the tourist trap for photos. The overlook is gorgeous and worth it for tourist reasons imo.

Across the Allegheny is the North Shore where from west to east you’ve got Rivers Casino (gambling), Carnegie Science Center (science museum), Acrisure Stadium Heinz Field (American football)(we’re ignoring that the name changed cause yinzers are petty), and PNC Park (baseball). There’s also a concert venues and some bars. I think the Andy Warhol Museum is technically in the North Shore. Cute little museum dedicated to a singular artist. If you like Warhol or Pop Art it’s got like 4 or 5 floors and it’s fine. Opening day for baseball is late March so there’s some overlap with the Pens season and tickets are relatively cheap. I wouldn’t recommend Steelers football because tickets are stupid expensive but Pirates baseball is cheap as hell cause we suck. Best ballpark in America tho. Pirates frequently shut down the Roberto Clemente bridge to walk across the street during weekend games which is a delightful experience.

Further back into the North Side (basically the neighborhood behind what’s on the river) there’s the Mattress Factory (sculptural and installation art museum), the National Aviary, plenty of parking/parks, and the Children’s Museum (for 3-12 year olds so very out of your age range since there isn’t a baby sportsthoughts but I’m just listing things at this point). The aviary is delightful because birds are good and they have penguins.

On the other side of downtown not across the rivers (downtown is a triangle) is the Strip District. Historically it used to be wholesale retailers, nowadays it’s that plus restaurants plus offbrand yinzer sports merch. I mention it because if you want history, the Heinz History Museum is on the other side of the convention center between downtown and the strip. The Heinz History museum has the Western PA Sports Museum. It takes up like the entire second floor and they’ve redone the Penguins sections to include the 16-17 cups. I think like the Church Brewery is in the strip as well and there’s a whole new shopping center that was under construction forever that I haven’t checked out but has like indoor golf.

Now we’re getting to the places that aren’t walkable from downtown. There’s the Carnegies in Oakland which is 80% college and college students. I’m talking about the Carnegie Natural History Museum and the Carnegie Museum of Art (they share a building with each other and the Carnegie library of Pittsburgh, Main branch) The Nat History has dinosaurs. Art is what it says on the tin. They usually have a feature exhibit and the modern art gallery and the permanent collection. Teenie Harris has an exhibit. One admission will get you into both. I can direct you to the website if it’s interesting to you. Phipps Botanical Gardens is also in Oakland if you like plants. I think they’re fun.

In Shadyside is the Frick, but I wouldn’t prioritize it tbh. It’s good if you’re looking for something new after having hit up most of the museums but it’s a museum in a fancy house, it’s skippable. M

If you’re looking to push how far away from downtown you can get, I’d recommend seeing if you can see the boys during practice in Cranberry at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex. You’ll probably need a car or cab, I don’t know about the busses in the area. Also a bit of a hike is the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium. Exactly what it says on the tin. Finally if you’re there in spring, you can possibly visit Kennywood, the amusement park. Good if you like rollercoasters we have three different wooden coasters that I’m a fan of.

There’s also the parks, which I don’t think you’re gonna care about the playgrounds or walking trails.

Only other thing I can think of is PPG Paints is doing arena tours which includes walking in the locker room but because of that it’s incredibly limited and might require the boys to be out of town entirely. Idk I looked it up at the start of the season and it was all at like noon during work days so I put it out of my mind.

although on that topic: friends who've been to pittsburgh or know the city - what should I see? I have a few free days between games. anything that I absolutely mustn't miss?
