Scots Pine Bonsai on Crab Basket Stand~
This display immediately caught my eye. I love the freedom of American Bonsai. This artist did things that I don’t believe would be acceptable in Japan. I mean a beer can as a pot?! He took “trash” and made something beautiful of it. Likewise for the upturned crab basket as a stand.
One’s culture is a great treasure. It can however, also be a straight jacket. Looking at the American Bonsai artists are push the boundaries of the Art, one might say even ignoring them, I might venture to say that they are leading the art in new directions in ways that the more traditional cultures of Japan and Chinese simply might not be able to.
The inventive approach to Nick Lenz’s Bonsai is a fantastic example of how an American Bonsai artist pushed the boundaries of the Art to new places.

The Great ACT-NSW-NZ Trip, 2023-2024- The Rest of Canberra
We weren't in Canberra for long, despite our original plans - but after the property manager for the place we were supposed to be staying ghosted us, @purrdence had to completely change our accommodation for the first few days, and we had less time to see more of the sites. We did the obligatory visit to Parliament House where the grounds were appropriately full of galahs, obnoxious freeloaders, and European pests (the actual parrot, seagulls, and rabbits) and I did find a few species on a windowsill at the motel, near Mt. Ainsley when I was mailing beetles to a coleopterist, and out at the National Arboretum.
The Arboretum was established after the devestating bushfires of 2001 and 2003 burnt out most of the area. It currently has 44,000 trees planted, many rare or symbolic, but it's still quite a few decades off maturity (although some of a much earlier planting of Himalayan Cedar did survive the fires).
A few of the species were ones I've covered before, admittedly, I didn't think that the ones at the Arboretum or the National Bonsai Collection there really count, but here's a Plantain Moth, Scopula rubraria, previously covered here.
