Hey there lovelies! Well getting two out in one day didn't work out, so I will try to make sure I'm catching up with 2 days at time as much as I can over the next few days! I have a very important question to ask you-- and that is, have you laughed today? Did you know laughter can reduce anxiety, and stress, stimulate your lungs, heart and muscles? It's actually pretty damn awesome how much a good old fashioned guffaw can make us feel better. Is there something you know for a fact will make you laugh? (For me it's silly cat videos, or Stede boarding the tiny fisherman's boat in the pilot of the hit series OFMD). Maybe it's stand up comedy-- or puns, or dark humor. Whatever it is that tickles your funny bone, I would request that today you go and just partake in some giggles. she has always dreamed of something bigger than her mundane life but is riddled with self-doubt.

that's the thing with mia. she starts something but never finishes it. like, she is captivated by the idea of backpacking through europe or wandering on the streets of tokyo, but never acts on it.

as much as she acts like she loves change, she secretly lacks the courage to leave her comfort zone.

recently she has been toying with the idea of performing stand-up or sketch comedy. but the fear of not succeeding and the pressure to be funny in a structured setting with an audience holds her back. she occasionally signs up for local open mic nights, using them as a testing ground for her material. (give me a plot where a character hackles mia on stage bc why NOTTTT)

SCAVENGERS is a feature animation project currently under development from the award-winning Illogic Studios. The film follows the journey of JIMMY – a lazy rat – and NINA – a resourceful frog living in a gigantic city made of trash. While it may not look like the best place to hang out, to them and the other creatures living here, it is a paradise where they can find everything they need. Everything is perfect… until the day the garbage truck stops coming.

Movie Review | Death Walks at Midnight (Ercoli, 1972)

Interesting the lengths this goes to in order to ground the usual irrational tropes of giallo in some degree of rationality. Crazy dream sequence where the character sees something they couldn't possibly have been present for? Well, that's because she was tripping on an experimental new drug for a news story. Multiple characters who look like subconscious variations of the heroine (foxy older woman, scary older man)? Let me explain how they're all connected through an elaborate criminal conspiracy. Unhinged, sadistic violence that seems like a madman? Well, there's a reason it looks like that. I'm not sure any of this automatically makes the movie "better", but it is a way to solution for narrative momentum when tying these elements into a complete movie.

One of the benefits of a genre defined as much by style as by narrative elements is that seemingly an awful lot of them will look very good, if only by virtue of combining similarly modish fashions, state of the art decor and antiquated architecture all in one movie, often in the same frame. A certain frisson is generated from the way these particular surfaces look on film, especially when contrasted with each other. But this one looks makes especially good use of the widescreen frame both in creating beautiful compositions and keeping things nice and tense. A man's leg steps into the frame from across the heroine to destabilizing effect. Two goons sit in the foreground as a character can be seen approaching from the distance, a certain dread building as he potentially walks into a trap.

I'm not sure I've taken notice of Nieves Navarro despite apparently having seen five of her movies, but I think she makes a pretty engaging lead here, despite the terrible hairdo she sports in exactly one scene (and reverts immediately to her normal hair right after). She has some pretty nice screwball-like chemistry with Simon Andreu AKA Sexy Spanish Nathan Fielder. I think the movie drags for some of the second half when it makes the mistake of separating them (so Navarro can go crack the case or whatever), but it nicely rebounds with the terrifically blocked rooftop finale, where Andreu attempts to save the day but mostly gets his ass kicked. Lots of great compositions where characters close in on each other or make surprise attacks from different edges of the frame. Multiple scenes where things pop into the foreground in a pseudo 3-D effect, like Andreu tripping a goon who stumbles onto a pile of bricks, or Andreu himself getting his head smashed through a plate of glass. As a wise man once said to little appreciation in a crowded movie theatre, "That's gotta hurt!"
