It's February but it's always a New Year if you want it to be.

Now that 2024 is circling the drain, I’ll start regaling you with my “Favourites of the Year!” “Maybe one reason I like female-fronted punk bands is my mother was a yeller. Gives me a homey feeling,” Nate Lippens muses in Ripcord (my favourite book of 2024 – well, tied for top spot with Candy Darling: Dreamer, Icon, Superstar by Cynthia Carr). “The anger of my old punk albums is still fresh. This fearful rage sung in wild harmonies with sped-up rockabilly guitar riffs is about careening drunk through disappointment and sadness as time slips away, leaving something half-healed and half-wounded. The singer keens, “A life of intermission, a life of intermission …””. Even if you don’t recognize the lyrics to “Beyond and Back” from their 1981 album Wild Gift, you’ll instantly identify the unnamed band Lippens cites as X. The definitive and most enduring of original Los Angeles punk bands released their ninth and final studio recording Smoke & Fiction in August 2024, and it’s my album of the year. All the essential components that make X unique are present and correct. Brevity (the album is 28-minutes long). Despairing low-life beatnik poetry. The fiery zap of Billy Zoom’s punkabilly guitar. Exene Cervenka and John Doe’s signature dissonant, spine-tingling harmonies. And they wail and shred like their lives depend on it. (X still sounds reassuringly desperate!). But Smoke & Fiction is also rueful, with reflections on ageing and the passage of time. Its messages are bittersweet and unconsoling. “There is no upside / Only your flipside / That's where the dark side resides” they conclude on “Flipside”, while on the title track Exene laments “Wrapped up tight in twilight / In a bed I am borrowing / My face turns to sorrowing / When I'm dreaming about tomorrowing / I still hurt a little bit / But there's no cure for this.” If this is indeed X’s swansong (and let’s face it, considering their ages and Zoom’s health travails it probably is), they are ending on a dignified creative high. Gossip Girl:

Manchmal spricht ein Gesichtsausdruck Bände – und heute sagt Katys genervter Blick mehr als tausend Worte. Selbst Juliet, Jenny und Chuck können nicht übersehen, dass Serena und Blair wieder ihre Finger im Spiel haben. Doch während Juliet und Jenny still beobachten, geht Chuck direkt auf die Konfrontation zu. Oh, ich spüre schon die Funken fliegen. XOXO, Gossip Girl.

Katy kehrte zu Juliet und Jenny zurück, ein gezwungenes Lächeln auf den Lippen, während sie sich wieder zu den beiden gesellte. Juliet legte den Kopf schief und musterte sie aufmerksam.

„Alles okay?“ fragte Juliet leise und zog Katy etwas näher.

Katy zuckte mit den Schultern. „Ja, alles gut. Serena und Blair hatten nur mal wieder das Bedürfnis, mich vor meinem eigenen Leben zu retten.“

Jenny lachte trocken. „Klassisch Serena und Blair. Die denken wirklich, sie wüssten alles besser.“

Juliet warf einen kurzen Blick zu den beiden, die immer noch in ihrer Ecke standen und offenbar erneut über irgendetwas flüsterten. „Willst du, dass ich mit ihnen rede?“ fragte sie ruhig, ihre Stimme aber mit einem Hauch von Entschlossenheit.

Katy schüttelte den Kopf. „Nein. Sie würden es nur als weiteren Grund nehmen, dir die Schuld zu geben. Lass sie einfach.“

Währenddessen hatte Chuck die Szene aus der Ferne beobachtet. Er hatte sofort bemerkt, dass Katy genervt aussah, und es brauchte nicht viel, um die Übeltäter zu erraten. Mit einem Glas Whisky in der Hand näherte er sich Serena und Blair, die ihn misstrauisch ansahen, als er direkt vor ihnen stehen blieb.

„Na, was habt ihr diesmal wieder angestellt?“ fragte Chuck mit einem schiefen Grinsen.

Blair verdrehte die Augen. „Oh, bitte, Chuck. Wir haben nichts angestellt.“

Chuck zog eine Augenbraue hoch. „Wirklich? Denn Katy sieht aus, als hätte sie gerade ein besonders nerviges Treffen mit zwei Oberflächenexpertinnen über ihr eigenes Leben gehabt.“

Serena verschränkte die Arme. „Wir haben nur versucht, mit ihr zu reden. Wir machen uns Sorgen um sie.“

„Natürlich macht ihr das,“ sagte Chuck sarkastisch. „Denn wenn jemand in der Upper East Side glücklich ist, muss das ja ein Problem sein, oder?“

Blair verschränkte ebenfalls die Arme. „Was willst du eigentlich, Chuck? Warum mischst du dich ein?“

Chuck lehnte sich entspannt zurück. „Weil es langweilig wäre, euch nicht darauf hinzuweisen, wie durchschaubar ihr seid. Ihr seid nicht besorgt um Katy – ihr seid besorgt um euren Einfluss. Aber lasst euch gesagt sein: Ihr verliert. Und wenn ihr weitermacht, werdet ihr auch sie verlieren.“

Serena und Blair tauschten Blicke, während Chucks Worte nachhallten. Sie schienen beide nachzudenken, ob sie tatsächlich zu weit gegangen waren. Doch bevor sie reagieren konnten, hatte Chuck sich bereits mit einem amüsierten Lächeln abgewandt und ging zu Nate, um ihm die neuesten Entwicklungen zu erzählen.

Gossip Girl:

Chuck Bass mag vieles sein, aber blind gehört nicht dazu. Während Serena und Blair immer tiefer in ihren Kontrollzwang abtauchen, bleibt die Frage: Werden sie erkennen, dass sie die Grenze überschreiten? Oder wird Katy ihnen endgültig den Rücken kehren? XOXO, Gossip Girl.
