Art in The Good Fight and (The Good Wife) - Part 1
as promised, i am resharing some of my art threads from twitter over here. to recap, as a history major and art nerd, i have always loved looking at the art shown in the sets of period drama, but it was really striking to me how obviously intentional it was being used to assist in telling story in The Gilded Age (plus Impressionist lover Mrs Sylvia Chamberlain was just begging for it).
while part of it is about identifying the art because i do love an easter egg, the other part i find really interesting is thinking about how art reflects character and story. so, i started thinking more about art in The Good Fight/The Good Wife, and i started a twitter thread and it became a season long thing this year for the final season.
this post is part 1 of 2 about the art in The Good Fight/The Good Wife, and in particular, Diane Lockhart's impeccable art taste. so, without further ado...
this is my hands down fav, which is in Diane's Boseman/Reddick office in TGF, Girl with Peony by Andy 'Zig' Leipzig 🔥
i adore the surrealism and guess what i found? sunflowers of course 🌻🌀🌻 this is Andy 'Zig' Leipzig's Have a Heart, 2014.
in Diane's old apartment in TGW era, the engraving on the right is by Jean-Pierre Louis Laurent Houël, Vase cineraire et figures antiques (1782, Gennadius Library).
the left looks like Bougainvillea, Parivolia, Italy by Isabelle De Borchgrave (watercolour).
this is not Diane's, this is Sweeney's, but i have never been able to find this still life from TGW 419, which is a shame because it is GORGEOUS.
in the McHart apartment post TGF s2, there's an engraving by French artist Jean Louis Prévost, Flowers & Fruit.
behind Kurt and more clearly here is a French Watercolour Landscape (distributed by Soicher Marin gallery).
there are also a few pieces in the bathroom, including some botanical prints visible only in the mirror. and this one above the fireplace, A Rainy Day, by an unknown American Continental School artist (20C, oil on canvas).
i'll be back next week on Thursday (aka missing TGF more than usual hours) for the rest of my thread, which focused on the art in s6 and was possibly more intentional than the rest of The Good Universe put together.

exhausted tuesdaypost
short one this week! i'm at baby's first big academic conference and boy howdy i have no idea what the fuck i'm doing! technically posting this a little early by the time zone i'm in (pst) but in my normal time zone (est) it is already tuesday so fuck it amirite
listening: a little more partizan but not much (almost done with episode 19). VERY bold of me to think i could finish partizan before 2024, but also the first two weeks of december were a total wash for me because of conference prep. will very likely blaze through a ton of it when i get back to my apartment at the end of this week.
reading: read a little more of 'the house on vesper sands'. reread some tgcf chapters because they're familiar and soothing.
cait corrain goodreads controversy: the world of twitter/tiktok writers is such a foreign concept to me. the drama even more so. i was fascinated by this. reminds me of the livejournal drama of yore.
diagrammatic writing by johanna drucker: picked this up at a bookshop in san fran. might give it to my brother as a holiday gift? it's very cool and meta and caught my attention, as well as being bite-sized.
drinking, power wheelchairs and dui: got in a conversation with my roommate about how you can get a dui on a horse in arizona (which i think is a little strange because a horse, while under your control, generally wouldn't just go off a cliff or into traffic even if you try to guide it that way?? idk shit about horses though) which morphed into "wait. you can get a dui on a horse. and a bike. what about wheelchairs." i definitely agree with the "wheelchair and its driver together fall under the class of “pedestrian” when using sidewalks and crosswalks" because like. yeah. it's no more a vehicle than my legs are y'know? or something. there's definitely deeper disability theory here that i am ignorant to but i'm remembering stuff from the embodiment-themed art history class that i took my senior year and how technologies can serve as extensions as the self rather than separate entities.
playing: still pokego. yeehaw
watching: episode 6 of tgcf donghua! i'm a little confused about the release schedule but i am obsessed. they're in love your honor
misc: found out the nyt dialect quiz is behind a paywall now when i told my friend about it and she tried to take it >:( met a cool older gentleman on the cable car, he's a retired nat geo photographer originally from paris. just a really cool dude. wish i got his name so i could look up his work.
BONE TIRED at this conference despite it literally being day one. i am so exhausted. partly jetlag partly New Experience partly anticipation for poster session on wednesday partly meeting collaborators and wanting to make a good impression etc etc. i definitely need to plan in more breaks. last week was easily one of The worse weeks of my life so far, combo PMSing plus breakdown over realizing i had to completely re-run a simulation (or two etc) and redo all my plots for my poster. just agonizing cramming of so much stuff. completely draining, basically burned myself out before even leaving for the conference, but it's Fine i'll be Fine i just gotta get through my presentation on wednesday without completely losing the thread.

THE VEGGIE BOOK OF REVELATION – by David D. Fowler & Aeon 999 – revised July 9, 2023
VEGGIETALES was a brilliant vehicle for an upbeat child-friendly presentation of the world's most popular spiritual instruction manual. Its producers and staff also demonstrated a gift for cleverly lampooning pop culture. The embedded videos above are among their finest works.
MFF is proud to present recently unveiled images of their spectacular take on the ever-popular APOCALYPSE. This vegetarian edition of the Bible's intimidating conclusion must surely be one of the most important lost classics of film history – conveying both the abject terror and awe-inspiring hope embodied by the legendary REVELATION OF JESUS CHRIST.
The original director’s cut of the film evidently included LARRY THE CUCUMBER singing one of his signature Silly Songs: a jaunty little ditty about the proper way to stir fry vegetables, featuring many of the Veggies perishing in Satan's wok. Because of this ill-advised detour into dark humor, the film was understandably not released by the studio – for fear of boycotts by the Religious Right, the Young Republicans, and the Vegan Mafia.
Fortunately for us, AI artist NAT SHARPE has unearthed the images displayed in our gallery. On his Twitter account, he writes: "What happened to VeggieTales? Their last movie was The Book Of Revelation. Test audiences were so traumatized [that] the studio canceled the project – and shut their doors. All that remains is a handful of leeked concept art."
Sharpe's tweet thread, displaying all 17 of these phenomenal images in their original sequence, has the blessing of VeggieTales' creator. You can find the display, along with some entertaining responses, at this link: https://twitter.com/nat_sharpe_/status/1619847565855555586 – and for more of his artwork, go to this link: https://www.etsy.com/shop/Hornheim
The playlists below showcase videos based on specific Bible stories; and fables inspired by biblical precepts. Bonus tracks include FRANK ZAPPA's touching tribute to the vegetable kingdom; a compilation of VeggieTales HALLOWEEN episodes; the best of the SILLY SONGS; and we end with a heartrending cautionary tale about the sad fate of way too many of our veggie friends, perpetrated by THE ARROGANT WORMS.
We begin with a tribute to Head Veggie PHIL VISCHER, the wacky and visionary founder of BIG IDEA ENTERTAINMENT.

Wanted a better look at the embellishment on Yvon’s jacket, so I took some caps! Some general observations:
The jacket is basically in the cut of a tunic, falling to about midthigh and with the left breast wrapping over the right so that the sides of the lower skirt-like part overlaps.
Symmetrical decorative patterns are found around the collar (meeting in a shallow vee over his upper back and gently tapering in front to form lapel shapes that terminate around the waist, covered by his belt) and also around the sleeve cuffs.
The prevailing motifs seen in these designs differ between collar and cuffs. The ones around the collar seem abstract: curving linear and geometric patterns. The cuffs, however, share the curving line style but are more representative, depicting floral/botanical elements.
I had initially wondered whether some of the round/raised bits might be beads rather than thread. I found some real close-up shots in which you can see the stitching, though, and it looks like the bits I thought might be beads are just loops or whorls of thread, so I think I can confirm that it’s all thread embroidery.
I’m putting the rest of this under a cut because it’s quite long, but: basically, I was interested in the style of decoration on his jacket, particularly the floral aspects, and attempted to do some historical research. I honestly was not as successful as I would’ve liked, and this post has actually been sitting in my drafts for almost two weeks now because I kind of got stuck. But on reflection, I still do want to share the screenshots as references, my observations, and at least the gist of what I looked into and what I found.
So! Under the cut: rambles about what interested me and what info I was looking for, links to the work of modern Ojibwe and Métis artists, and also a brief note on Yvon’s rifle strap, which I think is quite interesting as well!
Basically, when I was initially collecting the above images, my interest was particularly piqued by the floral decorations on the cuffs. The show identifies Yvon as Anishinaabe, and Zahn / Nat Geo have identified him specifically as Ojibwe, and I had a vague memory of reading at some point that Ojibwe art is particularly associated with floral designs. Floral designs not being solely unique to Ojibwe art among indigenous arts, and Ojibwe designs not being solely limited to floral ones, but a strong association nonetheless. I think most famously this takes the form of colorful, intricate embroidery with tiny glass beads:
(image source: Native American Artist-in-Residence: Jessica Gokey)
This is often done on black velvet or, as in the case of some of Gokey’s work that I saw, on black broadcloath, which I would say is probably about the same type of fabric Yvon’s jacket is made of — a plain, dense, sturdy wool. Although my understanding is that Ojibwe didn’t begin using colored glass beads of this sort until they acquired them via trade with Europeans in about the 19th century, beads made of other materials would, of course, still have been available in Yvon’s time, and I was still curious about whether the designs themselves on his jacket accurately reflect authentic patterns and motifs used by Ojibwe people. What was clothing and decoration like among Ojibwe and Anishinaabe people in the 17th century? What styles and materials were used? Are the elements in Yvon’s embroidery more generic, or are they recognizably specific in style to his culture, etc.?
And so I began with the Wiki-ing and the Google Scholaring and the skimming of articles. Unfortunately, a lot of the most promising-looking sources were only available as printed books (some of them quite expensive, too), so I didn’t have access to them, but from the articles I was able to browse, I did learn some relevant things. I found sources saying that before glass beadwork, Ojibwe decoration did use other types of beads and also used embroidery, which tracks with what we see on Yvon. I found a number of sources saying that floral motifs specifically were introduced to people of the Northeastern Woodlands in the 17th century via contact with Europeans, particularly nuns, who brought with them their floral embroidered fabrics and their floral folk arts.
However...
Although there were plenty of mentions of Ojibwe beadwork and floral designs, and a good number of more modern examples, I had difficulty finding in-depth information that discussed it specifically in the context of Barkskins’s time period (or prior to European contact, either). Sources focusing on the art in later time periods might still be relevant to what Ojibwe decorative arts were like in the 17th century, but I just don’t know enough to know. The example images I found were of beadwork from the 19th century or later, and even then, they were buried in a slew of Pinterest results that I really don’t consider reputable sources, because sure, they might be legit, but they might also be completely mislabeled.
In general, I felt less than confident about what my searches turned up. This is a topic I know little about, have no personal or academic experience with (not being Ojibwe and not having formally studied anything relevant to this), and I’m wary of misinformation here because I know that indigenous people have spoken about seeing biased, simplified, and outright inaccurate info presented even by sources that should seem credible, like museums. Not to mention conflicting info. Remember I mentioned I read about floral designs being introduced (or at least popularized) by European art? And yet I also saw other sources rejecting this idea that Ojibwe floral motifs have their roots in colonizers’ art rather than simply in drawing their own inspiration from nature. In general, I just didn’t feel confident that I had the insight or education necessary to evaluate my sources or synthesize conflicting info, and my brief, superficial research didn’t seem reputable or interesting enough to shed any particular light on Yvon’s clothing. So I basically put this post aside.
(image source: Native American Artist-in-Residence: Sarah Agaton Howes)
But ultimately, I still want to highlight Yvon’s embroidery, even if only from an aesthetic, costume-detail perspective, and I also want to share some of the lovely videos showing the work of modern Ojibwe artists I came across while I was looking all of this up! Here’s another link to this video featuring the work of Jessica Gokey, which I inserted near the top, and here’s one in which Greg Bellanger discusses some of the history and process of his art. In this interview, Sarah Agaton Howes brings up the idea of Ojibwe floral designs as a historical means of teaching about medicines and preserving that cultural knowledge, especially in times when passing down such knowledge was suppressed. I thought that was very interesting and am kicking myself because I did actually look briefly at a thesis extract on Ojibwe botanical/medicinal knowledge, but now I can’t find it again. I also enjoyed this shorter video with Howes as well. And this video featuring the work of Delina White gives us some examples of these floral designs primarily as embroidered thread, like on Yvon’s clothing, rather than as beadwork:
The final video I’ll link is this one, which is about Métis floral beadwork rather than Ojibwe. I don’t know how similar/different the two styles are (nowadays or historically), but since Métis share roots with Ojibwe and Anishinaabe people, and since Métis culture developed out of the setting, cultural interactions, and approximate time period of Barkskins, I thought it still relevant enough to rec here. Not to mention that it’s just pretty and I wanna rec it. All of these videos offer a lot of interesting information and perspective on the craft itself as well as on the history and tradition.
Before I go… One little costume detail I do feel reasonably confident offering my own speculation on is that the decoration on Yvon’s rifle strap appears to be quillwork — porcupine quills dyed and shaped into designs. I could be wrong, but the texture, colors, and pattern look very similar to the examples I’ve seen, and it’s an art form that would certainly have been established, culturally relevant, and available to him in this time period. So that’s the tiny bit of original input I’ll contribute to this post!
In general, I think the whole Barkskins team — costume design very much included — has shown that they put a tremendous amount of research and thought into the design and construction of this show. I’m sure Yvon and his costume were no exception. And I love the overall look!

Caerul Design Notes,
because I’ve actually put a lot of thought into creating Caerul’s aesthetic and I’m lowkey really proud of it. I won’t get into her actual character concept/personality/backstory/etc. since this got super long, but this is how/why I made the choices I did with regards to her name and visual design!
▶ Caerul’s color scheme started off way bluer (hence the name “Caerul,” from caeruleus/a/um - “blue”/“cerulean”/“azure”/“of the sky/sea” in Latin) and less saturated, but when I gave her a (dead) twin with a red theme, I wanted them to look more alike and made both of their hair purple (although I haven’t actually done more than sketch Roseus before... he’s got purple hair and red eyes). Purple’s my favorite color, and unnatural hair colors don’t seem to be uncommon in Orth, so why not, right? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The red elements in Caerul’s design are meant to represent her honoring Roseus!
All of the base colors I use when drawing Caerul! They all end up looking a bit darker once they’re shaded though.
▶ As well as shamelessly using one of my favorite Latin words (I’m a Classics major, okay ;;>~>), I also tried to pick a name that sounded similar to the ones that already exist in-universe. This was actually fairly tricky, since as far as I can tell the names in Made in Abyss have a WIDE variety of influences. Some of them seem passably Japanese-sounding (Riko, Jiruo, Kiyui, Nanachi) disclaimer I bring dishonor to my ancestors and know 0 Japanese so this is just about vibez, others seem Western-ish (Reg, Nat, Lyza, Prushka). Some are fairly whimsical (Shiggy, Maruruk, Mitty) while others are more mysterious and fantastic (Any of the White Whistles besides maybe Lyza). The only common thread I could really settle on was a general fantasy feeling to all of the names. I tried to capture that nebulous vibe with Caerul’s name, although with something so vague and subjective it’s pretty much impossible to say if I was entirely successful. I named her siblings afterward with other Latin color words and ended up with a RGB theme lol.
▸ By the way, “Caerul” is pronounced “KAI-rool.” It rhymes with “Hyrule.” The ae diphthong makes an “eye” sound in Latin #TheMoreYouKnow
▸ “Caducalae” is a portmanteau of “caducae alae,” literally “falling/doomed/futile wings” in Latin (again), playing off how pointless it is to be able to fly when the Curse of the Abyss is a thing. Originally, they weren’t supposed to work at all outside of the Abyss, but I decided that was boring for crossovers/other verses so I scrapped it. I’m not too happy with the name since it doesn’t fit the naming scheme of the canon relics (there is no precedent at all for gratuitous Latin in Made in Abyss, which is a good thing because it’s overused in fantasy, but Latin was the only thing I was good at in high school sooooo... ^^;), but I didn’t like any of my other ideas that much, either. “Wings of Futility” feels more canon, but it’s also kinda depressing :/
▶ I’ve mentioned before that Caerul’s build is based off of mine for art reference purposes (it’s convenient to just look in the mirror while making the pose I want =w=)b), but another reason she’s so short is that I didn’t have to make the caducalae quite as big since she’s smaller, so she can actually go indoors if she’s careful.
▶ Long hair isn’t super practical with mechanical wings with lots of bits for it to get caught in, but Caerul idolizes Lyza, so I left her hair as long as I could reasonably get away with.
▶ I heavily referenced the canon Made in Abyss character designs for Caerul’s clothing so she would fit into the world, but made some alterations to make everything more personal to her and accommodate for her wings. In general, I lightened everything up, since she takes a bunch of short, quick trips rather than lengthy expeditions. Her gloves, for instance, are loosely inspired by the ones we see many delvers wearing in the manga/anime, but are less heavy-duty and are convertible mittens/fingerless gloves for better dexterity with handling letters and such.
The best close up of the gloves I could find was actually a screenshot of the aftermath Reg & Riko’s orb piercer encounter, but I didn’t want to have to tag this for gore, so you get Lyza ^^; There’s a filter over Caerul here so you can see the glove better which is why she looks kinda washed out :/
▶ Her coat is heavily influenced by Jiruo’s, since he’s the only Moon Whistle we’ve seen in canon.
yeah, uhhhh, sorry to yoink your style my dude ^^;
▸ Caerul’s has a different color palette, a simpler lapel border, an extra set of outer pockets, and three separate panels in the back that button around her wings so she can put it on! I haven’t drawn it, but her shirt works similarly.
This is my favorite detail about her design tbh... it’s just really satisfying what a logical solution it is for some reason??? the original doodle is off rotting somewhere in my Modern European History notes, but I tried to recreate it just as sloppily here =w=)b
▶ Caerul’s corset isn’t just a painful fashion choice - it’s actually meant to be a(n admittedly heavily stylized) brace for her back against the weight of her wings.
▶ Since Caerul can’t wear a backpack with the wings, I had to get creative with storage options for her. In addition to an undetermined number of pockets on the inside of her coat, I gave her these two pouches on her thighs to carry more stuff.
I wonder how buff your quads could get carrying a significant amount of weight there...
▸ Messenger bags don’t seem super practical for delving, so I didn’t design a specific one for her to carry all the time, but Caerul does use them on occasion. Even with that, though, she still has far less carrying capacity than the average delver, which is a problem she has to deal with when carrying out her duties!
▶ The wings/caducalae were by far the most difficult part of designing Caerul, and it took several redesigns over 2+ years before I was finally happy with them. Their first design was deliberately far simpler in the interest of having to draw them a zillion times, but they ended up clunky and unwieldy looking:
chonky o~O
▸ The final design is MUCH more of a pain to draw (in fact, a lot of the time I cheat and just copy and paste them from drawings I’ve already done), but I think it looks much sleeker and more “functional”.
I also got better at making my diagrams look slightly more authentic ;0
▸ I knew I wanted jetpack-style thrusters to be a component of the wings to somewhat justify the shit I wanted Caerul to be able to pull with them (especially to eliminate the need for accounting for the damage landing suddenly could do to her ankles), but incorporating them proved to be one of the biggest problems of the design. At one point, they were going to have a whole separate attachment point on her back, but I finally just made them an offshoot of the first “joint,” as you can see in the final design.
A really messy intermediate caducalae sketch. The weird double pentagon shape was meant to be the part of the relic actually fused to Caerul’s back, but I scrapped that too when I scrapped the separate limbs for the thrusters.
▸ Speaking of the joints, they’re all balls so they can rotate all over and I don’t have to fuss too much about how they move. Likewise, the frame is metal, but I treat it like it’s kind of flexible, so Caerul can “flex” the wings open and closed. These wings are hard enough to draw period okay I’m giving myself every excuse to be inconsistent af on purpose.
▸ The caducalae have some “bonus” features that I’ve sketched out, but that Caerul hasn’t unlocked yet, and won’t for a while.
owo what’s this?
▸ For the wings, I think my biggest inspirations were some of the mechier Cardfight!! Vanguard dragon units (although I don’t remember which cards specifically) and the energy wings on the ninth-generation knightmares in Code Geass R2.
I’ve made a lot of OCs, and since I don’t like to use faceclaims, I’ve done a fair amount of character designing. I don’t think I’ve ever spent as much time or had as much fun with any of them as I have with Caerul, though! OCs aren’t always super well accepted in fandom roleplay, but the Made in Abyss community has been super welcoming and I’ve had a blast. Thanks for listening to me gush about Caerul if you got this far, and thank you to everyone who’s interacted with her!
The original sketch of Caerul from back in 2017. How far we’ve come :’D
#miscellaneous info#mun art#appearance#ooc#((no one cares lol))#((but I had fun putting all my thoughts down in writing ^^;))#((also! the full version of the new caerul art from the promo!))

A lot of people are debating whether or not kpop idols should be speaking out about BLM and if black fans have a right to be angry if idols stay silent — which they do. As a white woman, I have no right or place to decide how these fans should feel or respond, but for those saying it doesn’t matter because kpop has nothing to do with BLM, let me give you a little history lesson on kpop and the genres of music it is heavily influenced by!
Korean pop music, gayo, or kpop, however you choose to refer to it as, can be traced back to 1885 when an American missionary began teaching American and British songs at schools. More western culture was introduced after the Korean War, when U.S. troops remained in South Korea. Modern kpop began to evolved in the 1990s when Korean pop musicals began to incorporate Europop and popular American music styles. It does have roots in traditional Korean music, however it is actually heavily influenced by western music and culture! Some of the biggest genres influences on kpop include rock, jazz, gospel, hip hop, R&B, reggae, electronic dance, experimental, folk, country and classical music.
For the sake of this, I’m going to predominantly be focusing on jazz, R&B, rock, and hop hip.
Jazz originated in black communities in New Orleans in the late 19th century and has origins in blues, ragtime, spirituals, classical, and West African music. The 1920s was known as the Jazz Age, and jazz is considered by many to be America’s classical music and one of America’s original art forms. It has many derivative forms, including free jazz, hard bop, modal jazz, smooth jazz, Latin and Afro-Cuban Jazz. New Orleans jazz specifically blends sounds from brass-band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime, and blues. Swing was also a very popular derivative of jazz in the 1930s with musicians like Cab Calloway, Duke Ellington, Earl Hines, Jimmie Lunceford, and Count Basie.
Minnie the Moocher (Theme Song) by Cab Calloway
In A Sentimental Mood by Duke Ellington and John Coltrane
Weather Bird by Louis Armstrong and Earl Hines
Tain’t What You Do (It’s The Way That You Do It) by Jimmie Lunceford
Splanky by Count Basie
Rhythm and blues (R&B) developed in urban Black communities in the United States during the 1940s. Some of its stylistic origins are jazz, blues, spirituals, gospel, and boogie-woogie. Since the 1980s it shifted into a new style younger generations are currently most familiar with, referred to as contemporary R&B, which blends rhythm and blues with pop, soul, funk, disco, hip hop, and electronic music. Some of the most influential R&B artists are older artists like Prince, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Beyoncé, and Mariah Carey to newer artists like Rihanna, Ne-Yo, and The Weeknd.
When Doves Cry by Prince
Superstition by Stevie Wonder
Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson
Respect by Aretha Franklin
I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) by Whitney Houston
I’m Every Woman by Chaka Khan
Partition by Beyoncé
Hero by Mariah Carey
Needed Me by Rhianna
So Sick by Ne-Yo
Blinding Lights by The Weeknd
Rock music originated in the United States in the late 1940s, and began as “rock and roll.” Rock and roll’s biggest influences are black musical genres, two of the biggest being blues and R&B. Blues originated in the Deep South in the 1870s from African musical traditions, spirituals, and African-American work songs (this is the white guilt way of saying what they actually are Slave Songs). Blues is arguably the most influential genre in modern western music as some of its derivative forms include rock, ragtime, R&B, jazz, and country. Some of the biggest rock and roll artists include Chuck Berry, Nat King Cole, the Crows, the Penguins, and the Turbans. Even Elvis Presley, the “King of Rock and Roll” would say some of his biggest influences were B. B. King, Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup, Ivory Joe Hunter, and Fats Domino, all Black musicians.
Johnny B. Good by Chuck Berry
L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole
Gee by The Crows
Earth Angel (You Will Be Mine) by The Penguins
I’ll Always Watch Over You by The Turbans
The Thrill is Gone by B.B. King and Tracy Chapman
That’s All Right by Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup
Since I Met You Baby by Ivory Joe Hunter
Ain’t That a Shame by Fats Domino
Finally, hip hop and rap music which developed by inner-city Black communities living in the Bronx, NYC, in the 1970s. Its origins are styles of funk, disco, electronic music, dub, R&B, reggae, dancehall, jazz, spoken and performance poetry, scat singing, and talking blues. Hip hop has four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching turntables (records), breakdancing, and graffiti writing. Due to poverty and lack of acceptance outside of ghetto neighborhoods, however, hip hop did not officially get recorded for radio or television until 1979. Hip hop has derived and has many subgenres since the 70s and now includes freestyle rap, gangsta rap, hardcore hip hop, mumble rap, trap, experimental hip hop, and more. Some major influential artists include Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, LL Cool J, Ice-T, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Wu-Tang Clan, Notorious B.I.G., Lil Jon, Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, B.o.B., Drake, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Childish Gambino, Chance the Rapper and so so so many more.

Feeling Myself by Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé
HUMBLE. by Kendrick Lamar
This Is America by Childish Gambino
No Problem by Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne, and 2 Chainz
There is nothing you can say to tell me there isn’t Black influence on kpop. BTS had a whole multi-episode show where they travel to LA to train under “hip-hop tutors” Coolio, the artist behind Gangsta’s Paradise, and Warren G, a g-funk producer. Haechan calls Michael Jackson his favorite artist and inspiration. Almost all kpop groups have a rap line who “shockingly” LIKE BLACK RAPPERS AND ARTISTS. And it isn’t unheard of for kpop idols / groups to support and promote fundraising and campaigns. I’m not here to attack kpop, I’m here to explain why people can be upset by their silence.
Gangsta’s Paradise by Coolio and L.V.
Regulate by Warren G and Nate Dogg
While I am aware many of idols’ / groups’ accounts are not run personally or by their management, the silence and lack of support can hurt. I can understand why black fans want to see their idols they have been supporting support them too, especially when those idols have been, in a sense, profiting off of their culture. I can understand why black fans want their idols to support them not getting murdered in the street by police who are supposed to protect them.
For anyone saying that “this is America’s problem” and “leave it to America to figure out,” World War II happened because Hitler was committing genocide on Jewish people and it took ALL of the Allies, not just anti-nazi Germans, to take down Hitler and the Axis powers. The police and the government are committing genocide on black people. Systematic racism is a disease that the world, not just America, needs to fight.
Silence doesn’t make you an ally, silence makes you an accomplice.

The Grave on the Wall—an ancestral memoir/book of history, memory, mourning, and forgetting / recipient of the PEN Open Book Award—available at City Lights.
Read excerpts in: Entropy, Evening Will Come, Fanzine, Harper’s, Lit Hub, The Margins (Asian American Writers’ Workshop), Nat. Brut, The Offing, The Paris Review, and Tricycle.
Read the Nagasaki and Hiroshima chapters.
"Here we learn that to attempt to recuperate an erased past is an obsessive task, following faint threads into places of memorial, tragic time, aging bodies—the fissures, gaps, and scars of which can never be fulfilled. In the void between, ghosts emerge and disappear as dreams. In a weaving meditation, Brandon Shimoda pens an elegant eulogy for his grandfather Midori, yet also for the living, we who survive on the margins of graveyards and rituals of our own making." —Karen Tei Yamashita, author of Letters to Memory
"In The Grave on the Wall, Brandon Shimoda has conceived a moving monument to his grandfather made not of stone but of fractured memories and dreams, fairy tales and family photographs, pilgrimages to alien enemy internment camps, burial grounds, deserts, and the Inland Sea, all bound together by lambent strands of ancestral and immigrant histories. Within this haunted sepulcher built out of silence, loss, and grief—its walls shadowed by the traumas of racial oppression and violence—a green river lined with peach trees flows beneath a bridge that leads back to the grandson.” —Jeffrey Yang, author of Hey, Marfa: Poems
"Sometimes a work of art functions as a dream. At other times, a work of art functions as a conscience. In the tradition of Juan Rulfo's Pedro Páramo, Brandon Shimoda's The Grave on the Wall is both." —Myriam Gurba, author of Mean
"The legacy of past generations—though we embody them in some way, so often unknowingly replicate their gestures, tones of voices or facial expressions, maybe the curl of a lock of hair—that inheritance so often goes untold, except that Brandon Shimoda begins here accounting for it, beyond the borders of memory and forgetting, beyond the known and unknown. Shimoda intercedes into the absences, gaps and interstices of the present and delves the presence of mystery. Gratitude to Brandon Shimoda for taking on the mystery which only literature accepts as the basic challenge." —Sesshu Foster, author of City of the Future
“The Grave on the Wall among other things reads as a feat to me, as if something truly massive were fit into two hundred pages, without compromise or shortcut or disassembly or surgery. As if an impossible and entire monolith were fit between the covers. I imagine a thoughtfully planed beam of hardwood from a temple otherwise destroyed. Both locating and dislocating us, the marvel of its accomplishment hovers ominous and irreducible, a whole and deep act or care.” —Nabil Kashyap, author of The Obvious Earth, at Full Stop
“The Grave on the Wall is a passage of aching nostalgia and relentless assembly out of which something more important than objective truth is conjured—a ritual frisson, a veracity of spirit. I am grateful to have traveled along.” —Trisha Low, author of Socialist Realism, at The Believer
"Shimoda is a mystic writer. He puts what breaches itself (always) onto the page, so that the act of writing becomes akin to paper-making: an attention to fibers, coagulation, texture and the water-fire mixtures that signal irreversible alteration or change. Does this book end? Is there a sentence that closes it? Or does it keep being written and forgotten then written again, each time a reader opens it (the book) for the first time?" —Bhanu Kapil, author of Ban en Banlieue
"If someone asked me what a poet's history might look and read like, I would say Brandon Shimoda's The Grave on the Wall. It is part dream, part memory, part forgetting, part identity. It is a remarkable exploration of how citizenship is forged by the brutal US imperial forces—through slave labor, forced detention, indiscriminate bombing, historical amnesia and wall. If someone asked me, where are you from? I would answer, from The Grave on the Wall." —Don Mee Choi, author of Hardly War

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
For every ♥ I get in my inbox I will compliment a lovely person.
Are you really serious? I need more than ten ;) Putting this under a read more, cause gosh this will take some time.
@apurekindness I have seen Kiara grow over the years and I must say I still adore her as much as I did, almost four years ago, when I started roleplaying with her. Her kindness truly radiates off of her and you manage to capture that in the way you portray her (you do that with your other blog, too, but I am staying focused on this one ;) ). I have seen your writing grow as well and I must say I am more than intrigued to see how far you will go. It has been a joy and an honour to call you my friend and I truly look up to you. Thank you.
@bellxtor / @animusviincit / @freigeiist Theres. Goethe. Dude. I adore you. But you know that. I love all of your characters though I sometimes wonder how we always manage to turn every thread into a feels fest. You are the only person I truly ship with and I would go to the ends of the world for your ideas. But let’s be honest here, you are an inspiration, not only in persistence ( I still cannot believe I was truly able to read YOUR BOOK), an in inspiration in the art of torturing one’s own character, and in friendship. You have welcomed me into your home and your life, and I have been honored to witness your talent! Seien wir mal ehrlich, Steffi hat erst geglaubt, dass du echt bist, als Marie es bezeugen konnte ;)
@theladyaustria / @wxderwillen I told you this before, but your passion for history amazes me. I remember reading a thread between you and Johann about the beginning of world war 2 and the treaty and I was just awestruck at how perfectly you captured your character and her emotions. I really felt with Anneliese and it hurt my tiny heart a lot. It’s an amazing thing to bring so much life to history, I could never do it because I am a) too lazy to do all the research and b) too scared to do something wrong, especially if it comes to possibly triggering topics. But you have the courage to do it all and you do it so well. I admire you a lot.
@daniellecountessofderby Danie is one of Tilda’s closest friends and when it comes to tumblr you are surely one of mine. Writing an OC is hard, writing a history OC is even harder. But you created a wonderful character and - most importantly - you stuck with her through it all. She has evolved into someone that feels almost real, as if I knew her in person. You have created a consistent portrayal and she never feels out of character, no matter in which verse you throw her. I know that something like this is very hard to do, so I admire the ease with which you do it. And don’t get me started on your wonderful writing ;)
@qceenmother I love your muse, but I even adore you more for the positivity and all the good vibes you bring to my dash. Tumblr can be a hard and sometimes even a terrible place, just like the real world. I have seen you struggle with drama, hateful anons, and bad days, but through it all, you have managed to keep up the love. You spread the happiness towards others and I think that is truly an amazing and wonderful thing to do. Kindness is not appreciated enough in our society, so thank you for bringing it to Tumblr.
@sonofthearrow / @perfectforayear You once told me, you are proud of me and Giuli, that almost made me cry. Your friendship means so much to me, I cannot even begin to put it into words. You inspire me to be a better person, to survive this insane thing they call adulthood and to strive towards greatness. Even though that sounds more than just cheesy. I love what you did with Bain, and sadly I don’t know Cassandra’s backstory that much, but I am sure you play her just as wonderful as you play our favorite Laketown boy ;) Stay as awesome as you are, and don’t let life get you down. We are stronger than this and we can defeat our own Smaugs ;)
@aeliell Your Sigrid has brought a lot of joy to me, and I miss her dearly. Your writing has been inspiring and I admire you a lot for your polished style. Your replies were always top notch but it never felt like too much. Does that make sense? I am not sure. But I am sure that you are an amazing writer. The Bardling family has made a lot of real life things easier for me and it turned Tumblr into a home. Thank you for welcoming me into that family allthough I am just a shy tiny potatoe and yet another Marie ;)
@sigrfridr / @tachiisms I have honestly no idea of Siri’s story (except from the things I read on your blog) but I am rooting for her nonetheless. Because you put so much thought and energy and emotion into your blog. Not only the interactions but the headcanons and edits… Everything is filled with a passion for the character that I do not often see on this website. It is a joy to have on the dash and a wonderful addition. You made me like Star Wars beyond the movies.
@multimentium Nat, we’ve roleplayed on different blogs with different characters, but it has always been a joy. Your writing is clear, understandable, and most importantly beautiful. I am really looking up to you when it comes to style and clarity. Your characterization is on point and I love to see the ships and relationships of your characters grow over time, just like your characters evolve. It has been a joy to call you my friend, one of the oldest here on tumblr, and I hope that no matter on what blogs we may end up one day, we will always find a verse and a way to interact with each other.
@chainsxwsmile If someone had told me I’d be rooting for an interaction of my character with a shark, I’d think them crazy. But your Bruce is a gift to my dash and your drawings are just… wow. You are very talented and I wanted you to know that :)

Art in The Good Fight (2017-2022) - Part 2
part 1 here:
this part 2 is mostly about s6, because i think you can really track what the art is doing for story and character. so, let's get into it!!
still mad the new partner Ri'Chard took away this beauty, but they're forgiven for 603's art history references.
in the scene with the Dr, Diane mentions Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, originally attributed to Pieter Bruegel the Elder (oil on canvas, c. 1560). it's in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.
this is absolutely fascinating, because the composition of the painting is original—to give prominence to the 'low' subject matter, being the agricultural figure, rather than Icarus, to whom Diane is drawn. this is called 'Mannerist inversion' (yes i screamed, i'm a nerd).
this piece is brilliantly used this ep. Icarus, small, drowns unnoticed by everyone else. death happens all the time, and we move on. i'm reminded of Diane's sane little corner. the world is oblivious to the tragedy of hubris, concerned only with themselves. seems apocalyptic...
which leads me to my next point. behind the Dr is a Jean Andran engraving of a painting called Winter, part of a Seasons series now in the Louvre by Nicolas Poussin from the 1660s. and what does it depict? the flood. 100% premonition of impending death.
i love that *someone* has done their NY homework and seen that Guggenheim Hilma af Klint exhibit (i am not jealous at all), because also in the Dr's office is af Klint's Tree of Knowledge, No. 5 (Kunskapens träd, nr 5), from the 1915 W Series.
for various reasons, af Klint was for a long time ignored in favour of Kandinsky, Mondrian, Kupka etc in modern Western nonrepresentational art (also her queerness 🍵). her work has two overlapping levels, one biographical and one relating to the history of humanity.
the Tree of Knowledge series is part of her series of 193 Paintings for the Temple, which was af Klint's vision for the future as given to her by a spiritual medium, to depict 'the immortal aspects of man'. hence, she uses iconography from Christianity and Hinduism.
each piece in the Tree of Knowledge series is a variation on a theme, a tree with a heart-shaped crown. and there's a progression to the biblical allusion to Genesis symbolising innocence to fall from Grace, but there are also organic forms and ornate details.
the Tree of Knowledge (of Good and Evil) is usually paired with the
symbol of the Tree of Life, and in af Klint's work, signals binaries melding into unity. but the tree also signals Buddhism (the fig tree), the Tau/life force, the Arasa Maram in Hinduism.
the colours have meaning, yellow for female and blue for male. put them together and it becomes green, and the colours have become purer. this is No. 5, so the white radiations that were pale rose-coloured in No. 4 are now inverted.
af Klint probably knew Rudolf Steiner's colour meanings—yellow as spirit, blue as soul. green as the lifeless image of the living, peach-blossom the living image of the soul. white as the soul's image of the spirit, black as the spiritual image of the lifeless (cf swans).
the 12 sections in the top lotus leaf crown seem to represent the zodiac, months. also, there's a multi-coloured, lobed 'cross' in the small box middle-right, which maybe suggests the first awakening of the higher self?? compare this to the unity of colourful two birds in the bottom circle. there's a lot to be said about how this art represents how humans navigate their smallness in the world.
as seen on 604 in Diane's office, this is Street Musicians, by the American artist Norman Lewis (oil on canvas, 1948). part of the post-war movement.
from 605, i have identified some of the pieces Ri'Chard chose for the office, and they were clearly chosen for reasons. (unfortunately i couldn't find Liz's but i love the home decor and don't doubt this was also carefully chosen.)
this is by Kara Walker, known for room-size tableaux of black cut-paper silhouettes. her work illustrates the origins & legacy of slavery in the American South. i suspect there's a Civil War reference too. the 1994 piece riffs on Gone With The Wind (MOMA).
i really love this one. this is Holy Mountain II by Horace Pippin, a self-taught artist post WW1. he was influenced by Edward Hicks, a Quaker minister who painted interpretations of Isaiah’s biblical prophecy of world peace and harmony in nature (Peaceable Kingdom, c 1830-32).
though the gatherings seem tranquil, the Holy Mountain series is very dark. poppies, soldiers, grave markers, a limp body hanging from a tree... Holy Mountain I refers to D-Day, Holy Mountain II to Pearl Harbor Day, & Holy Mountain III (Smithsonian) to Nagasaki.
so there are parallels between WW1/Civil War, but it is also very Eden-esque. i rather like that the pastoral figure in a white dress with the yellow cheetah is the centre focus. all very biblical, which fits right in with Ri'Chard's style. Pippin himself stated that,
"'Holy Mountain' came to my mind because the whole world is in such trouble, and in reading the Bible (Isaiah 11:6) it says that there will be peace in the land. If a man knows nothing but hard times he will paint them, for he must be true to himself, but even that man may have a dream, an ideal and 'Holy Mountain' is my answer to such dreaming."
i was thinking about how much gold Ri'Chard brought into the office in the context of his Brand™ (1 & 2 old decor, 3 & 4 new, but none identified yet oop)
there are other etchings in the Dr's office: top: 'Rotherhithe' by James McNeill Whistler from the Thames Set (1860, V&A) bottom: 'Clearing a wreck on the north coast of Cornwall' by Thomas Rowlandson (c 1809-1822, British Museum).
Dr Dude likes ships that's all i can say 🤷♀️ but actually i think there's something interesting about all the Flood references in the Dr's office, like Diane is drowning. possibly, there's a subtle allusion to a very famous painting, Le Radeau de la Méduse, by Théodore Géricault (1818-19, oil on canvas, Louvre).
this is an icon of French Romanticism, depicting the aftermath of the wreck of the French naval frigate Méduse, which ran aground off the coast of what is now Mauritania on 2 July 1816. what's so interesting about this painting is that it presents ordinary people, rather than heroes, reacting to the unfolding drama. as Christine Riding says, the painting represents,
"the fallacy of hope and pointless suffering, and at worst, the basic human instinct to survive, which had superseded all moral considerations and plunged civilised man into barbarism."
by 607, Diane's office art has changed to a piece called Three Tumblers by Daniel Clarke (2018), perhaps a reference to her revolving office bar. also did we notice her flower obsession has dulled a little? but there are still orchids all around the office. i'll leave you to google the meaning of the original Greek word 👀
elsewhere in the office, FIRES abound on the digital screen in the conference room. flood, fire…and?
where there's a mansion, there's sure to be art (609): Asher Brown Durand, Landscape—Scene from "Thanatopsis" (1850, Met); Max Ferdinand Bredt, In the Courtyard of the Harem; John Frederick Lewis, Intercepted Correspondence (1869).
in 609 when same sex marriage is overturned (and Christine Baranski's acting chops is on full show with her shocked face), the image on the tv screen is Witch burning in Regenstein, Saxony-Anhalt, 1555. It's a wood engraving after an original printed on flyleaf (Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Nuremberg).
frankly there's a lot of misinformation about witch trials, not least of which is that they happened a lot later than most people think (ie. not the medieval period). the early modern period 16-17th centuries were the height of the European witchcraft trials.
and it was an ongoing, systematic persecution that resulted from the targetting of Christian heretics and Jews throughout the 14th century, and gradually both the church and scholars became more and more obsessed with demonology. it was really about the 'other', the concern about the loss of a certain way of life.
Diane, of course, calls herself a wench, so i think it's interesting that her s6 arc eventuates with her heading up a female-only law firm in DC working on women's rights and Roe v Wade. i dislike the way that the word 'witchhunt' is misappropriated like other historical terms in modern contexts, but it's probably fair to call the current backsliding on women's rights a witchhunt. so i love this double meaning.
finally, i wanted to return to how Diane's office art tracks her journey. the Surrealist art was the tone of the show throughout. but the violence seeped into the everyday and everyone just got used to it. hence the second painting is war (contrast the flowers).
but then Diane chooses to stop PT108. almost immediately, a bullet lands on the realist painting of a woman (where does she end up? in Washington DC fighting the good fight for women).
the violence doesn't end there. and then the office literally explodes & you can see a painting is off-centre. which seems like a good metaphor for where the world is at.
so yeah, the progression in Diane's office from Peony Girl to Post-War to a painted version of Chris is just chef's kiss. the way it tracks her psyche in s6? i'm obsessed.
#the good fight#diane lockhart#christine baranski#gary cole#kurt mcveigh#audra mcdonald#the good wife#the good universe#nat's tangents#nat's art history threads#it's missing the good fight hours#i mean it always is#but especially thursdays#although it still seems surreal that it's actually ended#maybe i am just in denial#who knows

hi! you seem to know a lot about comics and i was wondering, what are your recommendations? knowing that my favorite character is Black Widow? thank you so much!
Oh my god thank you so much!!!! I don’t actually know all that much about comics- I’ve kind of been in and out of various comics randoms for 2 years, and I haven’t been around long enough to remember most of various Dramas. And I’m so sorry it’s taken this long to respond to your ask- I have spent DAYS considering the response.
First up, Black Widow. Marvel hasn’t done a fantastic job with her, but the 2014-15 run that starts with “The Finely Woven Thread” is REALLY GOOD. It remembers that Natasha is more of a spy than a superhero, and it really digs into her individual character. Also, the art is great- Phil Noto is phenomenal, and the watercolors give it a sort of washed-out spy movie look that’s unique for comics and fits Nat very well.
It’s a totally different sort of comic, but it’s one that dragged a lot of people into comics as a hobby (myself included) so I think I need to rep Ms. Marvel, starting at the beginning with her very first “No Normal” run. Kamala is THE MOST RELATABLE teen hero- she struggles to balance superheroing, school, and familial responsibilities, she’s a science and RPG nerd, she right some really weird My Little Pony crossover fic. She makes her outfit out of a literal swimsuit. Kamala really heralded a new era in comics and steered Marvel in a younger, more female-centric direction, so I think this is one of those books that’s gonna go down in history. Also, she’s Muslim and Pakistani and provides a really important young voice of color in the superhero world. And it’s great to see a Muslim family with “ordinary” concerns- Kamala’s grades, gentrification, super villains.
Stylistically Kamala’s world is very similar to Spiderman: Homecoming, which is about where I’d label the “angst and violence” level for this specific comic.
My current favorite underrated comic is the DC Rebirth “Green Lanterns” comic. Admittedly the art isn’t the best, but the writing is honestly so sweet and . . . life affirming? The Green Lantern lore is really weird, but this comic was fine for a newbie like myself, and it runs on a different premise than the previous ones: Two green lantern of earth. Who have to work together. It’s the ultimate buddy-cop/friendship story, and it succeeds based off of the charm of it’s leads: Jessica Cruz, a Latina woman with anxiety and severe PTSD, and Simon Baz, a Lebanese Muslim man who’s introduction in a previous comic was admittedly not the greatest but who shines in this one.
Their friendship is really the focus of this comic, and it’s really awesome. Simon and Jess are the ultimate goofballs that YOU WANT as Earth’s guardians, even if they have a rocky start. It’s a really fun ride, and neither of the them exist in a vacuum- their families are around and important to their characters. There’s an entire issue devoted to Simon trying to bake the perfect maamoul cookies to impress his mother, for instance, that digs into their personal issues.
One of my other favorite ongoing comics is Silk, starring Cindy Moon. It’s another great female-focused comic, and some much needed Asian-American rep. Cindy is adorable and relatable and on a quest to find her parents after being locked in a bunker for years. (side note why do so many female character have traumatic backstories involving bunkers/training from childhood to be assassins/cults this seems like way to much of a running theme.) Her ongoing travails with her Chaotic Neutral mentor Felicia Hardy are a particular highpoint, but Cindy in general is my girl.
Finally, the Black Panther written by Ta-Nehisi Coates is ART. Seriously. It’s a modern masterpiece. It’s a beautiful work of Afro-futurism, with gorgeous art that explores Wakanda in loving detail, and it’s a deep exploration of government, freedom, and the organization of power. The spreads are vivid, and Coates’ characterization of T’challa as both a deeply human, caring, and compassionate man and a king in the 21st century is brilliant. Read and get #hyped for the film.
Some honorable mentions are: The current Elektra series, which I’ve the first two issues of but love because it confirms how very very sapphic Elektra is, the Ghost Rider series with Robbie Reyes because Robbie is my boy, and the current Birds of Prey series, which I’ve also read like 3 issues of but which features HELENA BERTINELLI! My queen.
Also Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye is great, because Clint is a mess and we love him for it. The art is simple and fun but also dazzlingly creative, and Kate is one of my favorite characters of all time. Delightful.

New York, NY – With the Entertainment Industry revolving on a never-ending carousel; it’s the power players behind the scene that’s withstanding its uncertainty. With that being said, Ladies and Gentlemen, I formally Introduce you to one of the most influential Industry heads in the biz, Ms “Onyx”. For the past 10 years, just about every name in the music and fashion industry has crossed paths with Ms. Onyx in one facet of the game or another. Publicist/ Manager/ Artist/ Songwriter/ and Executive Producers are just a few of the hats hanging in Ms. Onyx closet these days. While amassing an impressive track record, she has become one of the most sought after execs in Music with her keen ability to sniff out potential and nurturing it into stardom. It’s been powerful women like Onyx that is holding the game down as the industry undertakes a total shift in the face of switching from analog to digital streaming applications.
It all began in early 2000 when Onyx arrived in Killeen on a mission to excel in the realm of entertainment. For those who may not be aware Killeen, Texas lies roughly 45 miles north of Austin and is considered one of the fastest growing entertainment hubs in Texas. Onyx noticed immediately upon arrival, the growing landscape for hip-hop was present; however, the field was untapped with talent in search of an identity. There at that moment, a vision was birthed thence giving way to a strong desire fueled by a passion for changing lives.
Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world. ~Joel A. Barker
Onyx went to work using the brick and mortar approach of setting goals to provide avenues and lanes for artist a priority. One thing led to another and just like that a spark was ignited that would later mature into a movement. Deemed the last of a dying breed, Onyx personifies the true meaning of an A&R / Talent Scout / and Personality all in one. What better person to be considered an authority on the subject of the needs and concerns of the independent artist? The answer is simple, an artist. Onyx trials and tribulations as an independent artist can be accounted and attributed to dropping her own projects. Onyx scored commercial success with the hits, “Cut wit U”, and “Slow Wine” featuring TIa Evette which solidified her place on the R&B charts. However, its Onyx first love of educating and mentoring up and coming artist that draws close to her passion. In 2010, Onyx opened up a full-service Entertainment Conglomerate, equipped with a fully functional website www.queenofkilleen.com which serves as a one-stop shop for aspiring artist providing everything from music consultations to songwriting arrangements. Greatness comes with a charge, and with that charge comes the challenge to go further and beyond.
Further and beyond can only explain the path that has led Onyx to her destiny. Somewhere along the path where many detour to complacency, Onyx holds it in the road with faith at the wheel. In 2011, through a leap of faith, Onyx created her very own online radio show, labeled the Cut after her hit “The Cut”. Through networking and connections, the show was later added to Jermaine Dupri’s Global 14 network and subsequently named Global 14|The Cut which she serves as Executive Producer alongside her co-host Goldenfleece. The rest is history folks! From Eric Bellinger, Dj Scream, Musiq Soulchild, and even the likes of R&B sensation JR Castro, Onyx has had the distinct pleasure of bringing superstars into our realm of reality. While utilizing the skills from her many guest and visionary pioneer Jermaine Dupri, Onyx is in a great space with an unlimited cap to reach epic milestones.
From the ways things are looking for 2017, it would take a nation of millions to hold Onyx back. As the youngsters would proclaim in these days’, she is plain and simply referred to in many circles as the plug! Deservingly so, Onyx network is bound by an affiliation that runs deep and threaded from coast to coast. Besides being a member of the #1 record breakers in the nation (XSquaddj’s), Onyx also serves as the founder of ThePostUpShow = A newly formed pop up informative show which features live interviews from kids on subjects that kids like. Wow, its concepts and ideas that keep Onyx one step ahead of her competition. Whether it’s interviewing the next up and coming artist, Producing a live show, or managing a hot roster of artist (Young Mayne).
Analyst predict the Music Industry will produce numbers exceeding 300 Billion for the 2017 fiscal year. You can rest assure, Onyx will definitely stakes her claim as she continues to trailblaze with a passion that won’t be denied. ~ Renzo

We caught up with Onyx in Las Vegas for an all access Interview
January 2017
WT: Who is Onyx? Where did your love for entertainment originate? Onyx: Ohio made, Texas raised. For as long as I can remember I have always had a love for the Arts. I’m sure my mother had a lot to do with that seeing as how she was a pageant winner and vocalist. Although we never had a chance to meet, my grandmother was a model and activist during her time. I grew up listening to a lot of Earth Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Anita Baker, Nat King Cole and others alike. At age 4 I knew what I wanted to be. I declared it by the way of a classroom speech at the age of 6 when asked, What do you want to be when you grow up?” Nothing has changed.
WT: With the industry changing to a streaming format, where do you see the industry heading in the foreseen future? Onyx: This might sound very vague but I truly just see it continuing to evolve and open more doors for the everyday Joe. We have already learned that in some cases, you really don’t have to start off with any connections or ties for an opportunity anymore. When I first began in promotions|marketing we had myspace and facebook was a year old. I was hitting the pavement up and down the highway like crazy shaking hands…collecting cards. I don’t have to do it as much as I did before. It’s going to be more profitable to remain independent hence there are so many companies trying to get to their consumers and the labels just don’t have the same budgets like they used to. They put it where it belongs and look more for a partnership. These checks are rolling into the creator directly and they’re not bouncing. What’s good for some will be a disadvantage for others. You’re going to have to be multi-faceted but I don’t think us millennials are going to have any trouble with that at all.
WT: What is a typical day like for Onyx? Onyx: Each day is different but what remains consistent is I’m a mother first. My twin sons share the music, business, and sports gene so they are busy lol. Kirk Franklin Praise and Jeezy while I tend to the domestics, cooking, bills and a corporate hustle that requires weekly calls to tend to. My background is Hospitality– Director of Catering and Global Accounts. I put in a few hours a week to a separate gig remotely. I have about 3 calendars I utilize to make a to-do-list before I rest, and when I wake up I reorganize the list based upon received emails, texts, or social media correspondence. I have to check about 4-5 emails a day, multiple times. We recently hired staff for the show so that cuts down on some of the technical sides but I carry the bulk load of the weight. It just comes with the position.
WT: The number 1 advice you would give to independent artist out there today? Onyx: Set goals. There really is no right or wrong way into the industry or any business for that matter. Everyone’s journey is different. Keep in mind goal setting often requires some research of some sort. If we inform you that the music industry is a business then treat it as such. Set a goal, then set another one. Your goal may be to move to New York, find an investor, or protect your music. If you find that something isn’t working for you, then try another way or another lane. It’s so important to set goals so that you can work towards achieving it. That’s 101.
WT: How important would you say the focus on one’s brand should play in building a musical career? Onyx: Your brand is everything. It should definitely be a priority when establishing your foundation as an artist, producer, or whatever the position of choice. Licensing, publishing and corporate companies are great avenues to explore. Take some time out to read up on marketing techniques, current trends, and take advantage of the easy scores around you. The viral “challenges” though sometimes oversaturated, are a great loophole to gain some notoriety. It’s up to you to keep it.
WT: 2014 SEA Internet Hustler of the Year, what an impressive honor; what made your plight different, and what did you do to stand out? Onyx: Thank you so very much, winning the SEA Internet Hustler of the Year Award was truly an honor! In 2013, I attended my first SEA conference. That year I was pretty much at every music event trying to put a face to the show while spreading the word that we were based online! Don’t get it wrong, that didn’t mean we didn’t hustle when we were offline! I wanted people to know I did it all and I knew many aspects of “the game.” With the combined efforts of the heavy movement and power moves at the time, my nomination came about the following year. I didn’t expect to be nominated or win, nor did I campaign regarding winning. I take pride in that award, and I’m thankful that people saw exactly what I was doing. WORKING by any means necessary!
WT: Tell us about Hosting Global 14 the Cut? Your experience with working w/ Jermaine Dupri? Onyx: Executive Producer, I feel privileged to also Host Global 14| The Cut. The Show was originally part of a station concept then later became the sole foundation. I created the show in Nov 2011 and named it “The Cut” in honor of my first promotional record that landed two radio stations within my area entitled “Cut wit U.” I share the live stream with the other host Goldenfleece. If a listener were to browse our archive, they might take notice that we were ahead of the wave in regards to today’s trends in urban media. We base the show more on core journalism practices rather than any of the gossip, but we definitely make mention of those as they come about. For me, it’s always about finding a balance. We’ve gone viral a few times but try to focus on our guest experience and their fan interaction. My goal was to do something different. I think we’ve been able to accomplish, and progress a little along the way.
My experience with Jermaine Dupri comes thru his platform global14.com. He allowed me the opportunity to utilize the brand while creating for my own betterment. I don’t spend time with him during his day to day, but have always had his full support and encouragement from the beginning. I like that he will congratulate, take notice, or s/o our small yet recognizable efforts. He’s an innovator and a visionary much like myself so it’s always nice to have affirmation that you’re headed in a dope direction from someone of his stature. He’s clearly a living legend with many accolades. It’s an honor to be able to open a few doors thru the strength of his reputation.I have the utmost respect and admiration for Jermaine Dupri and will forever be grateful for the encouragement he has shown me thru these years.
WT: What’s your affiliation with X Squad Dj’s and US Dj’s? Onyx: I became a member within the Xsquadd Djs Coalition by way of a merger from Lucky of Indianapolis. The CEO, Damel genuine vision and work ethic personifies greatness. The USDJS was founded by a man named Poncho who I’ve known for many years. We were from the same city so the support was automatic, but my schedule didn’t permit me to fully engage in more than one coalition. I support his company from afar, and he continues to do the same for me.
WT: Tell us about your artist Young Mayne? Onyx: Young Mayne is near and dear to my heart. He is extremely talented and passionate about his craft. Our delay with his career was mainly due to legal matters & decisions that led to incarceration. My belief in Young Mayne ability as an artist is so strong that I set aside my love for singing to help him pursue our dream. He’s my older brother so this talent thing really does run thru our veins, lol. Young Mayne’s raw, but gritty Southern tone has an undertone that is musically influenced from pioneers such as Jay-Z, B.I.G, Scarface and the Legendary Tupac.
WT: What’s next for Onyx? Onyx: I’m literally headed for the Mogul status. I wish I could speak on all of my projects but I don’t believe in presenting the floorplan until at least the ink is dry lol. I currently offer services available by accessing my website or contacting me thru social media. I’m a music professional and I often write articles/blogs pertaining to the areas of my expertise and more. I just took on one of my younger brothers, Brandon Nichols, as a sports client. He’s my first under division. I’m still working on my own songwriting placement endeavors while developing my artist, and the radio show is headed towards new heights. Mayne and I are actually creators of artwork as well. I’m talking canvases, portraits, designs and more. Another family gift among others we collectively share. I do a lot, but I can’t yet speak on it all. I hope I can circle back once it all comes to fruition and share more.

just before the finale episode of The Good Fight dropped, i made a twitter thread with my unsolicited thoughts on Dante without a Virgil, referenced in ep 6x01. i then followed up after the finale and since it's missing Diane hours, i'm reposting both threads here.

so. Dante Alighieri wrote the Divine Comedy in 13C. he plays himself in the story, and being guilty of the sin of lust (Diane Lockhart you WENCH), ends up in hell. there he meets the soul of Virgil, an actual poet during the time of the Roman Republic. hence, Dante met Virgil in hell.
Virgil offers to help Dante through the nine circles of hell to get to paradise. *hallelujah*
but wait. the gates of hell bear the ominous inscription 'All hope abandon, ye who enter in!' and guess who talks about hope this season? Diane Lockhart.
Dante and Virgil are really student and teacher (so if you project, then the relationship is also uNetHiCaL). but Virgil also *protects* Dante. hmmm.
lust is the second circle, and this is where hell really begins. i think the interesting circle is the eighth, violence. against neighbours, self, and God/nature. it is VERY evident from Virgil that the violence of man destroys nature itself.
Virgil has a grander understanding of divine will, which he tries to teach Dante. hello buddhism. whether it works... well, Diane is holding a dorje in the finale teasers. but also:
s6 has really been about legacy, what this is all for (children 😥), tho it circles back to 101 (how is my life so fking meaningless?). as author, Dante knows Virgil has a legacy, but Dante is also concerned about his own legacy.
do i think Diane is perhaps imagining her version of hell while she's on PT108? maybe... remember her first session with the doctor she dreamt of a picnic with a guy (which i think is realised in the finale) and said:
Eugène Delacroix's The Barque of Dante depicts Virgil helping Dante cross the River Styx, which is in the fifth circle, anger.

Post-finale addendum
so how does Dante end? Dante goes through 9 spheres of heaven & enters the Empyrean, the place of pure light where God resides, which feels like a dream to him (cf surrealism/reality).
Gustave Doré's Paradiso Canto 31, 19C engravings for the 1861 edition of The Divine Comedy
Dante's journey began with him losing faith, questioning "why", as Diane has since s1: "In the middle of the journey of our life, I came to myself in a dark wood, for the straight way was lost."
btw Kurt did actually understand Tristan und Isolde, even if he couldn't verbalise it.
he quit his job and ran up those flights of stairs to ~save her~. that's the drama of Tristan & Isolde.
so by the end, Dante has found that his search for completeness is a journey. and Diane has realised that love is at the centre of her universe 💛
