A Complete Guide to Narrow Boat Covers and Canopies
Owning a narrowboat brings with it the joy of cruising the waterways and enjoying the scenic views, but it also requires proper maintenance and protection. One of the key components of keeping your narrowboat in top condition is investing in the right cover or canopy. Whether you’re new to narrowboating or looking to upgrade your existing setup, understanding the benefits and options of narrow boat covers can help protect your vessel for years to come.
Why Invest in a Narrow Boat Cover?
Narrow boat covers are essential for several reasons:
Weather Protection: The UK weather can be unpredictable, with heavy rain, strong winds, and harsh sunlight. A narrow boat cover protects your boat from these elements, preventing water damage, fading, and rust.
Security: A well-fitted cover not only keeps the weather out but also adds a layer of security, making it less inviting for potential intruders.
Cleanliness: Covers keep your boat clean by preventing leaves, dust, and other debris from accumulating, which means less time spent on maintenance and more time enjoying the water.
Preservation: By shielding your boat from the elements, covers help to preserve the condition of your narrowboat, maintaining its value and appearance over time.
Types of Narrow Boat Covers
When choosing a cover for your narrowboat, there are several types to consider, each offering unique benefits:
Cruiser Stern Covers: These covers are designed for boats with a cruiser stern, providing protection for the rear deck area. They offer a great balance of accessibility and protection, keeping the cockpit area dry and clean.
Traditional Stern Covers: For boats with a traditional stern, these covers offer tailored protection that follows the contours of the boat, ensuring a snug fit.
Tonneau Covers: Ideal for protecting the open areas of your boat, tonneau covers are easy to fit and remove, making them perfect for quick weather changes.
Narrowboat Canopies: A canopy adds an extra level of protection and versatility, allowing you to enjoy your boat in all weather conditions. These can be easily adjusted or removed depending on your needs, making them a great investment for all-season boating.
Full Covers: These provide the most comprehensive protection by covering the entire boat. They’re ideal for long-term storage or when your boat is not in use, ensuring it remains in pristine condition.
Choosing the Right Cover for Your Narrowboat
Selecting the right cover depends on your specific needs, boat type, and personal preferences. Here are some key factors to consider:
Material Quality: Look for durable, waterproof, and UV-resistant materials to ensure long-lasting protection.
Fit and Design: A custom-fit cover will provide better protection and is less likely to be affected by strong winds.
Ease of Use: Consider how often you’ll need to remove and replace the cover. Some designs are easier to handle than others.
Ventilation: Proper ventilation prevents mold and mildew buildup, especially if the cover is used for long-term storage.
Find the Perfect Narrow Boat Cover
Investing in the right cover for your narrowboat is crucial to maintaining its condition and enhancing your boating experience. Whether you need a canopy for sun protection or a full cover for long-term storage, you’ll find a wide range of options to suit your needs.

Shameless plug, 18:06 - EGB
I just thought that, with the new blog followers this year, I would take the opportunity to plug my books – so many years after I wrote them. Both "Relatively Wet Summer" and "Narrowboating Other Waters" are tales set on the water. They are both still available at ErikGaBean.com

Tuesday Event, 05.02.24 - Puzzling
A simple jigsaw puzzle race is so much more than the sum of its parts – and not just because the crew of the annual Stevenage.Plus narrowboating expedition are familiar with navigating the stretch of the River Avon at Stratford where the picture in the winning puzzle was taken. The rules are simple – one 500 piece puzzle for each team; first to complete their puzzle wins. There are only two…

We Are Old
People have been wonderfully outgoing and quick to engage in conversation with us. Even when they can’t hear our accents, they apparently can just tell we are Americans by looking at us.
Not going to spend a lot of time pondering that one since I’m pretty sure there’s not a damned thing I can do about it!
At dinner this evening I got to talking to the woman at the next table. She mentioned that friends of hers used to do this kind of boating but stopped because they just got too old for it. I mentioned that one member of our crew (yes, YOU Ben!) turned 75 last weekend.
She was totally gobsmacked. And very impressed. I told Ben when I came back to the boat. He only preened a little bit.
But the truth is that here on day 6 of our narrowboating adventure we are all feeling creaky and sore. We’re checking in on each other’s body parts each morning.
Clambering in and out of the boat is some work. The steps inside the boat are deeper than usual and the difference between the ground and the boat when we have to jump off or climb back on varies a lot.
The beds are pretty good but I wouldn’t say they’re great. Though I am regularly getting 8+ hours of sleep. Till my bursitis wakes me up…..
Hauling the lines to get the boat moored — or to keep it headed straight for a lock — takes some strength (yeah Patricia!). Manhandling the locks definitely takes some strength (lock jockeys me and Ben).
(Side note: the locks are the same design they’ve been for more than 200 years and they still work as designed. I’m impressed, frankly.)
Steering the boat, adjusting the tiller, getting us afloat after running aground (it’s gonna happen!) and simply being responsible for all this as the skipper (Jeff) is a load.
Our crew represents 3 decades — 50s, 60s, and 70s. I never considered that this might be a bold move for the four of us, being all old and creaky and shit. But it would clearly be easier if we were all younger.
On the other hand, we’re almost a week into it and still enjoying ourselves and laughing at our aches and pains. So perhaps we’re not too decrepit just yet.

One of our members kindly invited us to their house for a relaxed social evening of eating, chatting and playing pool.
