As an American, this is my request to international folks: please stop joking about how “crazy” and “messed up” the US is. Not because I’m offended, you’re absolutely right, but because that kinda of rhetoric ignores that the rise of far right politics is happening worldwide. Facism is a global phenomenon.

A similar thing happens in the US, and it happened again now. We pretend that there are “radicals” who keep the nation “divided” when in reality it’s obvious from the polls — just like in 2016 — that the majority of America feels like Trump is the better option. And worse than that, they’re being quiet about it. Political ideologies start with the vocal bigots, but they WIN because of silent supporters. This isn’t just a US issue, it’s happening all across the globe, and pointing at Trump and saying “wow look how fucked they are over there” allows that silent support base to build on an international scale because the attention isn’t on them.

Just to name a few, here are those you should look out for, and more importantly their followers. Please respond with more: Boris Johnson, Marine Le Pen, Benjamin Netanyahu, Viktor Orban, Javier Melei, Jair Bolsonaro, Santiago Abascal, André Ventura, Giorgi Meloni, Narenda Modi, Herbert Kickl, etc. etc. etc.

Don’t turn your head to see a car crash just to run into a telephone pole.

Last week, investigative journalist Saurav Das shared the fact that—in response to legal demands—Twitter blocked access to two tweets he had posted about India’s Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah. Censorship demands originating from the Indian government are nothing new, and Twitter boss Elon Musk has thus far agreed to grant them, blocking the material from view within India.

This is in line with Musk’s faulty understanding of “free speech” as a simple reflection of an individual country’s laws, no matter how oppressive.

But this time, Twitter did something different: It blocked the tweets not just within India, where Indian law applies, but everywhere. As with many of Twitter’s moves of late, it’s unclear if this decision is a result of Musk’s personal directives; understaffed teams; slipshod, off-the-cuff policy making; or all three. Twitter has yet to offer an explanation, despite requests from the journalist whose tweets were blocked.

Twitter’s international application of local law is worrying enough on its own. But it looks as if Twitter’s global block may not just be a concerning isolated incident, it may instead be part of a deeply troubling trend of tech companies willingly choosing to allow the most authoritarian diktats to guide content moderation.

I'm glad you didn't take it the wrong way. Oftentimes when I say something along the lines of what I said above, a lot of people's knee-jerk reaction is to call me slurs (I truly wish I was exaggerating) or just shut the conversation down.

There's a discussion to be had about the creamy layer aspect. Because the SC and ST groups have been victims of the practice of untouchability (which is still practised by approximately half of the country today) and whether economic mobility really helps all that much when it comes to that sort of treatment from society.

I agree, the policies are due for reforms and changes. Which is why I brought up the Caste Census data.

Did you know that to date there have only been 2 censuses in India which have looked at data about caste to see how it affects economic and social status of the people of our country? One was in 1931. Nineteen thirty one. The second happened in fucking 2011. Yes, it is THAT insane. But the more insane thing is that THE GOVERNMENT WON'T RELEASE THE DATA THEY GOT IN THE 2011 CENSUS.

The 2011 census happened under the Manmohan Singh government. That government did not release the data. Then the Narenda Modi government did two terms. This government ALSO DIDN'T RELEASE THE DATA.

That's fucking INSANE. It's fucking 'I'm peeling the paints off the walls with my teeth' insane.

No wonder the policies feel inadequate and stuck in the past. THEY LITERALLY ARE. They're using 1931 population data in the year 2024.

Can you imagine how much better the whole thing could be if our governments weren't incompetent and in some cases, outright malicious towards its own citizens?!?

This is the sectional cut off (aka the minimum required score in each section of the exam to pass) for the IPMAT Indore 2023....the difference between General category and the rest is insane. Not to mention the reservation.

Yes, casteism exists in India. But it's probably not how the rest of the world is made to believe.
