Book Summary: The Law of Success by Napoleon Hill.
In "Law of Success," Napoleon Hill outlines how successful individuals think differently and highlights the importance of understanding the forces around you. To attain success, you need a winning personality that fosters cooperation. Hill's blueprint for a winning personality includes several key attributes:
A Definite Chief Aim: Knowing exactly what you want to achieve is crucial. This aim should be written down and read daily, in the morning and at night. It must be a goal that benefits both you and those around you, consistently held in your mind to attract it into your life.
Self-Confidence: This involves making a personal pledge to believe in yourself, your coworkers, your employer, your friends, and your family. It also includes having faith in divine guidance and remaining patient and tolerant of others' beliefs. Write down this pledge and sign it to affirm your commitment.
The Habit of Saving: Set a clear goal for how much you want to save and earn, and surround yourself with this blueprint.
Initiative and Leadership: Embrace leadership by eliminating procrastination and learning by teaching. Emulate qualities of truth, quality, and understanding, and create these qualities within yourself.
Imagination: Your imagination is a powerful tool that reflects your soul. Visualize yourself as you wish to be, and use your imagination to reach your definite chief aim. The power of decision in directing your imagination is essential.
Enthusiasm: This is a contagious and vital force of life. Great leaders use enthusiasm to influence others positively. It allows you to do more, be more, and develop a dynamic personality.
Self-Control: Manage your emotions and impulses to maintain a steady course towards your goals.
The Habit of Doing More Than Paid For: Always go the extra mile in your work, as this creates value and opens up more opportunities.
Pleasing Personality: Cultivate a personality that attracts others and makes them want to cooperate with you.
Accurate Thought: Think clearly and critically, focusing on facts and the truth to make sound decisions.
Concentration: Focus intensely on your goals and the steps needed to achieve them.
Cooperation: Work well with others, fostering a spirit of teamwork and collaboration.
Profiting by Failure: Learn from your mistakes and use them as stepping stones to future success.
Tolerance: Be open-minded and accepting of others' viewpoints and beliefs.
The Golden Rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Additionally, Hill emphasizes the importance of a mastermind group—a collective of two or more people who meet regularly to exchange ideas, support each other, and maintain harmony and cooperation. This group fosters a sense of connection that extends to a subconscious level.
The foundation of success begins with a definite chief aim. Know what you are striving for and what works best for you. Your dominant thoughts shape your reality. To turn your chief aim into reality, you must be committed and consistent. Merely desiring success is not enough; you must act on it.
Self-confidence is another critical component. Write down and sign a personal pledge to believe in yourself and those around you. This is your personal business, and others' opinions should not deter you.
To be a leader, you must eliminate procrastination, learn best by teaching others, and embody truth, quality, and understanding. Leadership qualities should be developed and practiced consistently.
Imagination is your greatest strength and a reflection of your inner desires. Use it to visualize your goals and compel your actions towards achieving them. Enthusiasm is a key trait of successful leaders, enabling you to inspire and energize others.
By incorporating these attributes and strategies, you will develop a progressive personality that attracts cooperation and fosters success.
To develop these characteristics, you need to engage in work you enjoy or establish a clear and definite chief aim if that's not possible. Plan methods to achieve this aim, blending enthusiasm with your plans. Enthusiasm and belief are intertwined, and your influence wanes if your expression of core beliefs is inauthentic.
Self-control and discipline are central tenets in various scriptures, with thought being the most crucial tool. Divine providence gave humans control over thought, signifying its importance. Desire underpins self-control; a strong enough desire can bestow superhuman capabilities. Successful individuals channel their energy towards achieving a definite chief aim.
Cultivating the habit of doing more than what you're paid for is vital. Success comes from working with passion, whether for someone you love or on something you love. This habit builds a reputation for excellence and leads to greater rewards.
Your personality comprises your characteristics and appearance, including your clothing style. Genuine interest in others is a magnetic trait. Avoid insincere flattery; instead, find and genuinely praise a good quality in others, which will also positively transform you internally.
Accurate thought is essential. Classify facts into important and unimportant, focusing on those that help achieve your chief aim. Steer clear of gossip, gather and organize relevant facts, and recognize creative thought. Instruct your subconscious clearly on what you want, enabling it to enhance your intelligence through pattern recognition. Trust that opportunities will arise naturally when the time is right. Concentrate on your primary aim.
Cooperation, rather than competition, paves a smoother path to success. Key motives for gaining cooperation include self-preservation, sexual contact, and financial gain.
Sound character emerges from learning from failure. Adversaries highlight your weaknesses, offering valuable lessons. Failure refines a person, enabling resilience over time.
Intolerance breeds enemies and chaos. Mastering tolerance and understanding the roots of your biases are crucial. Build your philosophy free from prejudice.
The Golden Rule is foundational: treat others as you wish to be treated. The law of reaping what you sow is immutable. Unjust actions will return to you, so adapt to nature's ways. Think of others as you want them to think of you. Humanity shapes its destiny through thoughts and actions. Transforming thought into reality is a unique human power; use your thoughts carefully and methodically to shape your reality positively.
Following the above principles religiously would allow one to achieve the desired outcomes from life. All in all what must be necessary is the ability to commit and stay consistent to ones key aims.
"The Starting Point of All achievement is desire"- Napoleon Hill.

i'm most of the way through listening to a book trying to redeem Metternich, and like, whatever, dude, we all pick weird hills to die on, i wouldn't have picked the censorship and police state hill, but do you, but anyway there's something from a while back that is still bugging me, which is a framing of the situation in Germany that i feel is disingenuous at best - the quick summary of the argument is this:
German dissatisfaction with the economic situation in the early 19th century was justified, but the way Germans and German nationalist groups blamed Metternich's policies for it was not, because Metternich's policies were simply responding to Napoleon's economic devastation of the territories in the former Holy Roman Empire.
It bothers me because it's begging the question so hard - the only way this argument makes sense is if Metternich's policies were objectively correct for long-term success but caused short-term pain in the populace. One of the throughlines in this book is that Metternich is trying to do his best for causes he genuinely believes in despite the chaos of post-French Revolution Europe, and I think - though I disagree with him in every particular - that's true, actually. But that doesn't mean that his policy solutions are right, or that the people are wrong to blame them for their economic problems.
if there's a larger thing here, it's that, hm, the author seems to be attempting to replace the narrative of Metternich as villain with one of Metternich as embattled and misunderstood hero, using this argument and with his attempts to show the nationalist movement as the domestic terrorists that they were. Metternich can't be a villain repressing the freedoms of the German people if the German nationalists were actually a bunch of murderers and anti-Semites! but that's not really true: German nationalists are definitely a Problem, but Metternich is also a repressive tyrant. it's just another instance of "history doesn't have heroes or villains."
#Would i (prince [50]) be the asshole if i severely curtailed the freedom of the press and asked the emperor to vet every teacher?#for context a playwright was just assassinated by a nationalist who went to university#ESH my dudes#against moral history#bad history

My opinion
How to sell your way through life is an excellent book on how to get everything you want. It has all the elements of selling yourself, influencing people and negotiating that will lead to success if used properly. The third part, the analysis of Henry Ford, was my favorite, because of the insight you get into an extremely successful person.
Although it is not particularly thick, the book is rather long. A fairly small typeface has been used and the pages are completely full. This book could easily be split up into two or three books.I also found the vocabulary to be rather difficult. It helps a lot to read the book a second time.
