closed starter for @dcgtown / how to lose a guy chef version.
naomi was on a mission. the restaurant was supposed to be the first stop of the night - the plan was to find a bar nearby afterwards where she could locate her target and woo them in. instead, she found herself being wooed, as cliche as it was.
he's the best chef we have, the waitress giggled, bringing her a platter of desserts, her best friends cooing and laughing as her cheeks flamed red. she'd sent her name and number with her check when everything was settled and paid, leaving with her friends as they tackled another few places in the area, locating her best shot. but she felt like she'd found him already, waiting for her back at the beginning, and she bid her friends good night before turning back around for him.
it was a bold move - risky, really - but his had been too, and she knew immediately which one he was as the crew slipped out of the back entrance to disappear into the night. "do you give all the girls free desserts," she asked just loudly enough to get his attention, "or just the ones you intend to call the next day?"

➛ Addressing the 🪷 Anon in regards to their ask.
(Have to put the break here, since my OOC response is a lot too…)
(For anyone who is reading this, trigger warning for graphic descriptions of unsettling imagery, wounds, blood, and war typical violence.)
(Also there is mentions of refugees and mistreatment of said refugees, so please proceed with caution)
(He is most definitely something of an old man, sort of like a more cynical and negative version of Welt Yang from HSR. Also, he just looks exhausted, the lines and bags under his eyes, I just know his shoulders would be so tense he’s probably incapable of relaxing them.)
(I’m glad you’re feeling better, I ended up having a lot of work so I got a little swamped, but overall feeling well and fine— this silly little rp blog is always fun to write for, I really like reading all the asks, and just getting to interact with everyone. My astrite situation is looking a little bleak because I can’t decide if I want Jinhsi or Changli, but I’ll likely drop all other plans if we get Geshu leaks…)
(Naomi certainly has than energy around her, a little clumsy like a puppy, but means well and trying her best. Geshu Lin basically is just like “oh great” While he’s inwardly sort of panicking about the situation, because obviously he doesn’t want anyone to be in unnecessary danger, and the knowledge that there are like people slowing becoming TD’s, even inside Jinzhou where he can’t really help or fight would stress him out, let alone having one on bass with his troops, because again, he’s pessimistic as all hell, I’m pretty sure if he had the chance and under different circumstances he’d be like “we’re all gonna die why not speed up the process anyway”)
(At this point, Geshu Lin would probably blame himself if Naomi just got merked. He’d start thinking all of that negative cycle blame stuff, like “well if I hadn’t done that” or “if I had just done this” etc etc, because he knows the Magistrate expects something of him with this situation, and obviously he doesn’t want people dying pointless deaths, he just often has a bad way of going about it)
(Honestly in terms of relationship dynamics, I can’t say he would be more of a father rather than a brother, because some brother figures are very similar to a father figure. He would likely lean more towards being a fatherly figure or a distant brother figure, the kind of brother/father to be distant or harsh, but never cruel or anything like that, more just like having an aversion to overly affectionate gestures, but still caring a lot.)
(I have a soft spot for medic Jiyan, but that might also just be Geshu Lin talking. Plot wise, Jiyan is always a good choice for a sort of “bridge” character, since he and Geshu already have some sort of respect for each other, and they only clash over ideologies sometimes.)
(Geshu is definitely shaking his fist at the sky about the magistrate at the moment, he probably knows that Ren is laughing about the situation, but also Geshu won’t make an issue of it because he understands the magistrate has a full enough plate already, and he won’t be a nuisance just for nuisance sake.)
(Geshu Lin is essentially a walking contradiction, what we know of his character basically points to the whole “why don’t you follow your own advice huh?” Because he ended up sacrificing himself for the greater good due to his sense of responsibility and duty, but I doubt he’d ever admit that or brag about it or something like that. He is quite literally the kind of guy to go “we do whatever is necessary” and then feel guilty about it.)
(On a side note, I had a quick question about the rp in regard to my responses. Would you like me to elaborate on scenes you write involving Geshu Lin, or just pick up right where you leave off? For example, when you wrote about him reading through the documents and noticing his cabinets having been broken into, would you have wanted me to build on that in my response or would you have preferred if I just skipped right to writing my response where you ended yours? (In this example it would be when the recruit falls to the floor.))
(However, for this response I chose to elaborate a little bit, just in case that’s what you’d prefer, but not too much in case you’d rather get right to the action, I hope you don’t mind me questioning about this…)
~
After reading through the files on his terminal, Geshu Lin had turned to physical material for some background research, sifting through his shelves and cabinets with meticulous attention, his golden eyes roving over bits and pieces of information.
However, it eventually became apparent that something wasn’t quite right. His lips pulled down in a frown as he double and then triple checked certain stacks of papers, he had figured that he was being sloppy and skipping over critical documents, but that wasn’t the case.
Geshu Lin narrowed his eyes, placing the papers he was holding on his desk as he pulled open the door to one of his cabinets fully, scrutinizing the lock. It was dented, subtly, but not subtly enough to go unnoticed.
He let out a muttered curse under his breath, rubbing his thumb over the lock before kneeling to check the lower cabinets, finding similar results on any of them that should have held documentation on the disaster from ten years back. His terminal was of no use either, he had no access to anything of use.
Geshu Lin turned back to his cabinets, eyeing them with growing suspicion. His brow twitched with irritation the more he thought about it. No Tacet Discords would be capable of breaching the camp unnoticed, let alone breaking into his office and leaving with no obvious evidence left behind. Fractsidus members were typically clumsy and stuck out, they’d have to be quite skilled to go undetected. But what did that leave? Surely none of his troops were traitors, he wouldn’t allow such a thing.
Naomi was out of the question, she was hardly standing on her own two feet as it was, Geshu Lin wasn’t paranoid enough to be distrustful of someone who had been right in front of him.
He exhaled tiredly to calm himself, going back to his search, which eventually yielded some results. The documents themselves weren’t anything miraculous, and he considered the possibility that it was some sort of purposeful attempt to get him to play along, but information was information, and he wasn’t going to forsake it out of spite.
The first of the three, gave him little in terms of useful data. It was an article that covered the aftermath of the Lament that destroyed Naomi’s home. Much of it detailed public backlash, and the people of Jinzhou’s reaction to the refugees, as well as some insight on the situation from the Sakurian people, how they were unaware of TD’s existence.
Geshu Lin gave a quiet huff in acknowledgement of the Magistrate and his choice on dealing with the refugees. Typical Ren.
Though as his eyes drift further down the paper, he furrows his brows. The newspaper has been brutally scratched out and nearly rendered to tatters from a pen. He gently rubbed the paper between his forefinger and thumb, turning it over to examine the back, nothing but the signs of the pen having been used on the front. His expression soured at the sight— yet his eyes flickered up to his light as it blinked out for a moment before coming back on.
Moving on, Geshu Lin put the paper down and looked at the next one, a medical document, likely more useful than the previous paper… He began to read, idly tapping his finger against the desk as he went. The information presented to him helped with understanding Naomi’s condition, somewhat. It was referred to as a virus, but it happened to not be contagious by normal means.
Reading further, he noted that it mentioned Naomi, however not by name. Truly unfortunate that she was afflicted by this virus, no one deserved that. The term used to describe it made him scowl slightly, as dormant implied that the virus could reawaken— especially if the individual is consumed completely.
Regrettably, the document suffered a similar fate as the previous one, the bottom having been torn away. Geshu Lin put it down with a small disapproving glare before picking up the last of the files he could find. The light flickered again, and he glared at it in annoyance.
He held the document under the light, slanting it slightly to read the rushed hand writing as he put his hand on his chin. The second sentence left him rather befuddled, knitting his brows together with concern as he scanned the paper. Whoever wrote it was clearly against the Sakurian people, whether out of personal prejudice or if they had been wronged, it didn’t matter.
It seems they were a researcher, perhaps specializing in frequencies. Geshu Lin leaned his hip against his desk as he continued to read, his mind already turning the idea of different Forte types and new Tacet Discords around, trying to make sense of it.
…but the paper ends just as the other two had, except it was splattered with blood, dried and turned brown with time. It was an egregious amount, practically soaked through. He clenched his jaw as he stared at the remains of the document, messily ripped at the bottom, with a photograph attached. He examined it closely, gazing at the figure in the image, it was nothing pleasant, its singular eye blurred with movement while teeth snapped at what he assumed to be the camera at the time. It was too distorted to be of any real help, but it at least gave him some perspective on the paper’s current appearance…
Turning the photo over, Geshu ran the pad of his finger over the writing in blood, some of it flaking off. He wrinkled his nose in distaste at the texture, before reading the message. It was unsettling to say the least, but not helpful.
He placed the photo down as he tried to process all of the information, mentally sorting through it and trying to reach a conclusion when his light flickered more prominently once again. He raised his eyes and looked around his office in the flickering light, on high alert as he felt unnatural frequencies make the hair on the back of his neck rise uncomfortably.
The light goes out, he’s already grabbed his sword, igniting his flames as he glances to all sides of him with quick eyes. Though he cannot see anything, he can hear a voice— it isn’t clear or natural, it is instead distorted and broken, the whisper of “Devour” makes his skin crawl, but before he can demand a fight, his door bursts open and the lights come back on.
Geshu Lin is ready to lunge but instead what greets him is a wounded recruit. The general quickly cuts his forte to a stop and returns his sword to his back, trying to gather his bearings as the soldier begins spouting information as quickly as he can while his blood seeps to the floor.
He hardly processes the rapid fire words, registering the fact that there was an attack, and he needed to get out there quickly, but the recruit collapses and reaches out while Geshu watches, not moving in time to stop the bleeding despite immediately crouching beside him, holding him half slumped against the wall as he furrows his brows deeply and checks the soldier’s pulse. It had stopped.
Geshu Lin’s face darkens as he gets up, not having the time to properly deal with the corpse; it wasn’t his priority at the moment. He threw it over his shoulder instead, bringing it out of his office door so he could shut it. (He didn’t need any more documents going missing mysteriously). He carries the body and leaves it against the wall, making sure the soldier’s identification was intact before leaving the area with brisk steps, crossing the camp as he gives orders. “All soldiers get to your posts, possible TD outbreak imminent— and hold your ground!” He shouted, passing a few of the wounded recruits being brought to the infirmary, their condition was terrible. He clenched his jaw at the sight.
The general needed to get more information, the recruit had died before he could give him any more details— on the Tacet Discord’s, or the location of the ambush. But he couldn’t risk an attack on base when everyone was unprepared, so he gave his orders before swiftly heading to the infirmary to try and get more information on the enemy… and he could only get that from soldiers who had been there, he didn’t care at the moment that they likely needed time to rest, wasting time would only put them at a disadvantage, the sooner he could understand the enemy, the sooner he could eliminate them.
Geshu Lin made his way to the infirmary, ignoring the blood on the ground and the blood on himself from briefly moving the dead soldier as he went into the room, it reeked of rubbing alcohol and blood, and the sounds of pain reverberated on the walls from the wounded. He scanned the area, looking for a recruit he could speak with that wasn’t in critical condition. Before he spotted one however, his golden eyes caught a head of long teal hair, and further in the corner was a certain trouble maker.
(Well, there’s that… I was heavily debating between making him try and actively go hunt down the TD’s, but that seemed to be a bit of a long shot since the recruit didn’t actually give him any coordinates, or any real details, so I ended up making him go angrily hunt for those details himself… I hope I wrote enough, I was also debating making it longer, but I didn’t want to write a response that wouldn’t have given you any room to actually reply, since that would defeat the purpose of a roleplay when there isn’t any interaction..)

That means even the CATVwire drops down to earth ground, connects ground block 'lessthan 3 meters' to that earth ground, and only then rises backup to enter building. Again, no surge protector requiredbecause earthing is accomplished by a direct and shorthardwire connection. Completely agree with you. I think all journalists have special interests and should follow them. But I guess my main point is the stereotype of journalist who are interested in more tabloid journalism or celebrities have this bad reputation. Even after Poland lost its independence this alliance and this union remained firm in spirit and fidelity. All the national movements towards louis vuitton outlet liberation were initiated in the name of the whole mass of people inhabiting the limits of the old Republic, and all the Michael Kors Outlet Handbags Provinces took part in them with complete devotion. Transiting Juno enters Aries
April 28 - July 1, 2018
Juno, the Lady Asteroid of committed relationships, has a natural affinity with the sign Libra - and therefore, when she finds herself in independent, headstrong Aries, Juno may not exactly appear to be well-placed. People seem more “committed” to their relationships with their own freedom and autonomy. And indeed, a transit of Juno through Aries will certainly bring those kinds of relationship issues to the forefront.
This transit may be a lot of fun, and perhaps beneficial, for singles - we can all work on our relationships with ourselves! We can take ourselves out on dates! In fact, given the nature of the aspects Juno will make, our ability to be independent will be tested. Do we really have what it takes to go it alone? Some of us will be “up” for that challenge; conversely, others will be terrified at the prospect of solitude. We’re likely to take some risks in our pursuit of others - but more likely to be impulsive and headstrong. Please, please remember to think things through whenever possible!
People in existing relationships either will need plenty of “space,” and/or will have partners who suddenly need more “space.” We’re worried about unequal relationships in that we suspect our partners may be trying to gain some advantage over us. We’re also very fond of having our own way in partnerships - we want 51% of the power. It may be useful, and illuminating, to consider the relationship as an entity unto itself.
But, Juno isn’t just significant others.
Protocol and social ritual: manners, courtesy, all that etiquette stuff. There isn’t going to be a lot of patience for “trite” things like “please” and “thank you,” but at the same time we’ll be plenty pissed off if other people aren’t polite to us.
Feminine beauty: again, the Aries lack of patience will certainly manifest itself here as not wanting to waste a lot of time on this or that beautification process. (Which will be amplified while Venus remains in Gemini.) We might also be tempted into some “instant,” impulsive thing, like a drastic haircut.
Creative talent in the arts: everybody’s a soloist!
Women’s rights: “militant feminist” comes right to mind. How unfortunate that there is so much to be militant about. We’re impelled to take action against all oppression and to “strike a blow” for equality. Speaking of which….
Symbol for/of the powerless: I keep seeing Diana Prince.
Weather and the atmosphere: this is the scary part. Juno through Aries will square first Saturn/Capricorn and then Pluto/Capricorn; both are indicative of harsh, difficult weather situations. We can get into a lot of trouble when we’re too imprudent and overconfident.
Celebrities with Juno in Aries:
Robert Plant, Barack Obama, Rihanna, Albert Einstein, Heath Ledger, 14th Dalai Lama, Alexander the Great, Naomi Campbell, Drew Barrymore, Charles, Prince of Wales, Axl Rose, Lorde, Daniel Day-Lewis, Kate Hudson, James McAvoy, Francoise Sagan, Judy Garland, Zendaya, Tina Fey, Ozzy Osbourne, Isabelle Huppert, John D. Rockefeller, Vladimir Lenin, Norah Jones, Robin Wright, Sid Vicious
Sunday, April 29, Chiron/Aries conjunct Juno/Aries, 0:38
This is so intriguing to me - both Juno and Chiron have associations with the sign Libra (at least in my cosmology they do), but here they are, conjunct in earliest Aries. Issues about self-worth will undoubtedly crop up at this time. How can we expect to have healthy, fulfilling relationships with other people, when our relationship with ourselves is so damaged? If deep down we don’t believe ourselves worthy or deserving - if we’re looking for self-validation through having a relationship with someone else - we can only fail.
Planets/Points affected lie between 00:00 and 1:38 of all signs, and  between 14:38 and 16:38 of the fixed signs Taurus*, Leo*, Scorpio*, and Aquarius*..
Tuesday, May 8, Vesta Rx/Capricorn square Juno/Aries, 4:54
Vesta has JUST stationed retrograde; this will most likely manifest as overwhelming self-absorption. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing, or a new situation; we’ve all been exhorted to “know thyself” since the Delphic Oracle at least. We run into trouble when we expect everybody else to be as fascinated with ourselves (or more so) than we are. Remember another old maxim - “To make a friend, be one” - and use that as a guide for the navel-gazing.
Planets/Points affected lie between 3:54 and 5:54 of the cardinal signs Aries*, Cancer*, Libra*, and Capricorn*; and between 18:54 and 20:54 of the fixed signs Taurus*, Leo*, Scorpio*, and Aquarius*.
Tuesday, May 15, Saturn Rx/Capricorn square Juno/Aries, 8:31
The “severe weather warnings” go up, as this square is bound up in the Taurus New Moon. Add in plenty of issues about self-worth. We can’t go into relationships expecting the other person(s) to “complete” us or to make up for our shortcomings. If we’re personally lacking, we need to make up for it ourselves (with determined and persistent effort), rather than attempting to camouflage our flaws via a flashy relationship. And, don’t shirk responsibilities.
Planets/Points affected lie between 7:31 and 9:31 of the cardinal signs Aries*, Cancer*, Libra*, and Capricorn*; and between 22:31 and 24:31 of the fixed signs Taurus*, Leo*, Scorpio*, and Aquarius*.
Friday, May 18, North Node/Leo trine Juno/Aries, 9:37;  South Node/Aquarius sextile Juno/Aries, 9:37
Speaking of self-worth! How much of our self-assessment is based on what other people think of us, versus what we know deep down, to be of genuine, authentic truth? The majority of us want to be liked and approved of by others; we don’t always worry about (again) being worthy of others’ regard. And we do some pretty drastic, ultimately alienating things when we’re afraid of losing others’ regard. Better to be “just” ourselves.
Planets/Points affected lie between 8:37 and 10:37 of the yang signs Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius.
Saturday, June 2, Venus/Cancer square Juno/Aries, 16:46
Clashing family values - to illustrate the kinds of idiotic fights this can portend, I can use the very real controversy about when to open presents, on Christmas Eve versus on Christmas Day. We are really just so stupidly set on our tribal traditions, sometimes, without really thinking too much (or too deeply) about them. We bachelors/spinsters may rub our single blessedness into everybody’s face. This could also go 100% the other way, and we bring home a potential partner guaranteed to set off parental/tribal disapproval.
Planets/Points affected lie between 15:46 and 17:46 of the cardinal signs Aries*, Cancer*, Libra*, and Capricorn*; and between 0:46 and 2:46 of the mutable signs Gemini*, Virgo*, Sagittarius*, and Pisces*.
Friday, June 7, Mercury/Gemini sextile Juno/Aries, 19:12
Lightweight and lighthearted - very chatty, talky, hand-holding flirtations. (With perhaps some lingering through the weekend, as the Moon joins in the action on the 8th and 9th.) This is excellent for communicating couples being able to listen to each other, too. Our voices are right there, ready to go.
Planets/Points affected lie between 18:12 and 20:12 of the yang signs Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius; placements between 18:12 and 20:12 receive a transiting yod, indicating a need for adjustments; placements between 18:12 and 20:12 receive a transiting double semi-sextile, introducing an element of gwood timing.
Monday, June 11, Pluto Rx/Capricorn square Juno/Aries, 20:45
More severe weather, and not just climate. The kinds of tensions caused by this square boil down, mostly, to issues of domination - especially within relationships, of course, but also within the larger society. We’re liable to lash out against institutional, structural racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, all the myriad ways “you’re not a straight white Christian property-owning male, so you don’t count.” We aren’t particularly in a frame of mind to team up with others, but that’s what it will take to correct this.
Planets/Points affected lie between 19:45 and 21:45 of the cardinal signs Aries*, Cancer*, Libra*, and Capricorn*; and between 4:45 and 6:45 of the mutable signs Gemini*, Virgo*, Sagittarius*, and Pisces*.
Tuesday, June 12, Sun/Gemini sextile Juno/Aries, 21:17
On the heels of yesterday’s square between Juno-Pluto, this is an opportunity to learn a little more about ourselves based on what (if anything) we did to relieve that square’s tensions. It’s good for the kind of breezy social interactions of basic “networking” - establishing preliminary rapport with others. We can be extremely charming, if we so choose.
Planets/Points affected lie between 20:17 and 22:17 of the yang signs Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius, and Aquarius; placements between 20:17 and 22:17 receive a transiting yod, indicating a need for adjustments; placements between 20:17 and 22:17 receive a transiting double semi-sextile, introducing an element of good timing.
Monday, June 18, Eris/Aries conjunct Juno/Aries, 24:00
At first, superficial glance, this bodes ill for relationships, as the goddesses of marriage and strife join together. Some couples thrive on conflict, though! Think of this as a thunderstorm on an unbearably hot day - it’s loud and violent, and when it’s over the air is cooler and we feel refreshed. This may bring out Juno’s protective side, as well - we can channel and manifest our inner Xena, today.
Planets/Points affected lie between 23:00 and 25:00 of all signs, and between 8:00 and 10:00 of the mutable signs Gemini*, Virgo*, Sagittarius*, and Pisces*.
Thursday, June 28, Mercury/Cancer square Juno/Aries, 28:38
We end Juno through Aries on another argumentative note. Habitual, unthinking adherence to tribal thoughts is a pitfall. “My family has always believed XYZ; how dare you come here with your ZYX” - petty nonsense like that. *IF* we’re listening *at all*, we’re liable to misunderstand what we think we hear. And a late-Capricorn Moon will add to the overall pessimism and negativity, as well as our tendency to respond overly harshly. We need a lot of Libran calm, courtesy, and balance, to navigate through these difficulties.
Planets/Points affected lie between 27:38 and 29:38 of the cardinal signs Aries*, Cancer*, Libra*, and Capricorn*; and between 12:38 and 14:38 of the mutable signs Gemini*, Virgo*, Sagittarius*, and Pisces*.

HPC Introduction
Finally decided to dust off this ol’ account so I can better organize when it comes to HPC!
So, Hello there reader! Thanks for stopping by my blog! What is HPC you ask? Well let me tell you:
Heaven Piercing Combat is an action series that will pit preexisting characters (and maybe some original ones!) against each other in battle. However, these situations will not take place in a static environment. These characters will interact with, and play a part in, the story of the series itself. Each character and match up is approached with deep analysis, respect, and fairness.
Tumblr media
Yang Xiao Long (RWBY) vs Ryuko Matoi (Kill la Kill) Art by: Naomi Gumbs
We want to bring together the strongest, smartest, and/or most interesting fictional characters out there, and create an interesting and immersive dynamic between them. How will they react? Will they fight? Will they run? How will they survive? Are they a lone wolf or a team player? How will these vastly different characters from vastly different worlds interact with each other? How about if they're similar? Who wins is the end? We're hoping to answer all these questions and more! We want to create an experience with this story that will get your heart pounding, get you on the edge of your seat, and maybe even get you excited for the next episode! We just want you to know that all the characters we use, including your favorites, will be approached with nothing but the utmost respect and that they're in good hands.
Now at this stage, you might be asking:
"But... isn't this just Screwattack's Death Battle?"
The short answer is: At a basic level, yes. We episodically take 2 fictional characters, analyze and gauge their abilities, and have them fight.
The long answer is: No. This series IS partly inspired by death battle, and shares the same basic concept, but that is where the similarities end. HPC, as stated before, will not have battles taking place in a static environment. This is a shared world between all characters, and characters' actions, interactions, and fights will drive the main narrative. Death battle, as it's name implies, also makes characters fight to the death. However, with HPC, some characters may die, some may live, some may even grow to respect each other and join forces, or leave as worthy rivals. The goal is to have the outcome of fights be believable and fair, but not just in accordance to a character's abilities. We perceive this as looking at only one dimension of a character. We also take into account a character's personality, morals, and personal code, along with narrative needs. For example, if a character would otherwise never kill even the strongest and most worthy of opponents, they will not kill in HPC.
Tumblr media
Sun Wukong (RWBY) vs Sting Eucliffe (Fairy Tail) Art by: Naomi Gumbs
HPC is a series mainly inspired by Death Battle, RWBY, Gurren Lagann, series such as Injustice and Marvel vs. Capcom, and a general love for fictional media!
HPC is set in a world created by a powerful entity who wishes for nothing more than calamity and mayhem. To accomplish this, they pull warriors, swordsmen, brawlers, and other hot-blooded fighters onto the same plane of existence to create the perfect climate of conflict. Some characters enjoy this, and look for a worthy fight, some may aide this dark being in their nefarious plot, while some may stand against the maelstrom, and others may even have their own goals in mind. Who knows? We'd like to know what would happen when we get these characters together for a winner-take-all mix-up! Instead of you having to play through the experience, or have the characters meet in a passing one-and-done scenario, we want you to be able to sit back, relax, and watch the story unfold as we weave you this tale.
With so many wonderful characters from comics, anime and video games alike; HPC might just be the most ambitious crossover event in history!
I’ll try and post as many updates here as possible, but the bulk of the updates will be done on my Twitter. Please stay tuned for more updates soon!

Ten architecture projects from students at the Academy of Art University
An aquarium designed to protect marine biodiversity and a healing centre using horticultural techniques to help treat mental illness are included in our latest school show by architecture students at the Academy of Art University.
Other projects include a "public living room" that blends neighbourhood life with areas for privacy and a residential hub designed to enable economic self-sufficiency for residents.
Academy of Art University
School: Academy of Art University, School of Architecture Courses: M.Arch M.Arch2 B.Arch MA and BA Tutor: Mark Mueckenheim, David Gill, Nicole Lambrou, Sameena Sitabkhan, Eoanna Harrison, Philip Ra and Mini Chu
School statement:
"We are a progressive design laboratory of highly passionate students and a distinguished faculty of practising architects who work together to explore the boundaries of architecture. Our interactive onsite and online studio experience harnesses digital tools to mentor students throughout our rigorous curriculum.
"We offer an excellent design education by developing each student's capacity to synthesise critical thought, architectural vision, and technical comprehension. Our programmes engage with current global issues, empowering students to be change-makers and leaders advocating for social equity. Our diverse international community enables us to propagate a unique cultural response to build a better world."
Outer Mission Ramp Library - a knowledge connector for rapidly changing communities by Yi Hsien Rachel Wang
"The typology of library buildings has evolved throughout history, reflecting the changes in information systems and learning activities. By combining social, functional and environmental benefits, the thesis is projecting a new sustainable library typology as a prototype for a public learning infrastructure.
"The main conceptual idea is to design the library as a continuous ramp, connecting previously separated areas in the diverse local city fabric. The architectural intervention shortens the neighbourhood's physical and social distances by combining pedestrian bridges, casual and formal learning infrastructure as a public living room for residents to gather, work, exercise and entertain."
Student: Yi Hsien Rachel Wang Course: Master of Architecture Thesis Tutor: Mark Mueckenheim
Self-generating Architecture: Pier 28 by Valeryia Haletskaya
"The design for a hybrid aquarium and research-development centre at Pier 28 on the San Francisco waterfront employs organic, metabolic and self-generating materials. Artificial organisms – protocells that in time grow into artificial limestone – help to decrease levels of carbon dioxide while reinforcing the existing structure and building its sea-wall reef, skeleton, and envelope.
"Researchers, students and visitors share spaces for learning, interaction, and collaboration. The scheme offers protection for marine species and enhances biodiversity. The living architectural intervention is aimed as a long-term solution for coastal cities and other areas at risk from storms surges due to climate change."
Student: Valeryia Haletskaya Course: Master of Architecture Thesis M.Arch Tutor: Mark Mueckenheim
Outer Mix Investigating mixed-use development as a means to fostering a healthy year-round community on the Outer Cape by Christian Fish
"A lack of affordable, year-round housing has become an urgent crisis on Cape Cod, afflicting low and middle-income families depending on a largely seasonal economy. Outer Mix imagines a new residential, social and economic hub on a 10-acre area in the Eastham Corridor Special District.
"Organised into four blocks repeated throughout the site, 95 residential units are combined with nearly 30,000 square feet of economic and social programming. This includes artist studios, co-working spaces, cafes, a library, daycare and community greenhouse. This programme mix enables economic and sustainable self-sufficiency and a community for residents."
Student: Christian Fish Course: Master of Architecture Thesis Tutor: Nicole Lambrou
Eco-Tecture - Unifying Ecology with Architecture by Kevin Brady
"How can architecture enhance, improve and support educational and public awareness of the conservation and preservation of our local natural resources? Exposure and access to the elements of nature enliven the spirit, inspire curiosity, and encourages a 'critical thinking' response while promoting a healthy interactive lifestyle.
"This thesis seeks to determine how architecture could positively impact an ecological setting that strengthens community health, productivity, conservation and ecological awareness. This design approach engages user groups with the natural environment while preserving the ecological habitat."
Student: Kevin Brady Course: Master of Architecture Thesis Tutor: David Gill
A Living Architecture by Aishwarya Naidu Bobbili
"This project is a healing centre incorporating earth and plants into its form and structure to create a holistic, sustainable space for wellness and rehabilitation. Farming, nature and architecture form a dialectic relationship. Horticultural techniques such as pleaching aid in the treatment of mental illness and serve as a therapeutic strategy.
"Located in Bakersfield, near Oil City in Kern County, California, the site is near the highest polluted city in the United States. The project aims to aid in healing people with a tranquil environment that incorporates sustainable and biophilic design."
Student: Aishwarya Naidu Bobbili Course: Master of Architecture Thesis Tutor: Mark Mueckenheim
Unity Pavilion for Northridge Cooperative Housing by Naomi Rojas, Shunyi Yang, Dylan Ingle, Rhonuel Domingcil, Fabio Lemos, Corona Xiaohuan Gao, Malak Bellajdel, Kenta Oye, Jacob Delaney, Harikrishna Patel and Daniel Cervantes
"A design-build project by the B.Lab group, the pavilion fosters cooking, eating and storytelling within a community garden in the Hunters Point neighbourhood of San Francisco.
"Due to a lack of access to healthy, affordable food in the area, the pavilion integrates counters, benches, and a movable kitchen table for cooking demonstrations using produce directly from the garden, while a series of frames offer shade and a vista of the bay.
"The design was derived from several communities and youth workshops together with feedback from garden volunteers, and the pavilion was measured and tested on full-scale prototypes before construction."
Student: Naomi Rojas, Shunyi Yang, Dylan Ingle, Rhonuel Domingcil, Fabio Lemos, Corona Xiaohuan Gao, Malak Bellajdel, Kenta Oye, Jacob Delaney, Harikrishna Patel and Daniel Cervantes Course: B Arch Collaborative Project / Building Lab - b.Lab / ARH 498 Tutor: Sameena Sitabkhan, NOMA and Eoanna Harrison, AIA
Sign-Up Sheet by Daniel Joonhee Lee
"The project investigates the relationship between the sacred and the political, and the role of the autonomous citizen therein. Sign-up sheets are simple yet contractual.
"Where public services are exchanged, they are activating devices bringing citizens together to achieve common goals. Sacred architecture has been a beacon of alternative governance by becoming places of refuge and political action.
"This thesis frames those events as distinct from the economic agenda of neoliberalism. Sign-Up Sheet reimagines the site with an urban sanctuary in San Francisco's Tenderloin where non-profit staffs and community members live and work in a hub of collective activity."
Student: Daniel Joonhee Lee Course: Bachelor of Architecture Thesis Tutor: Philip Ra and Mini Chu
Kid of Parts for the Bayview Commons Apartments by Adam Nuru, Markish Siojo, Dylan Ingle, Fabio Lemos, Xiaohuan Corona Gao
"Through a series of community events at the Bayview Commons Apartments, an affordable housing community in San Francisco, we learned that residents wanted an active, intergenerational, and flexible space that allowed for relaxation, interactive play and community events.
"Our final design incorporates a set of flexible, movable furniture that can be set up in different configurations. Intergenerational play, imagination, and socializing are emphasized through the design of different panels on the modular pieces. The colourful groundscape is coded to give clues for spatial use and provide a vibrant surface that complements the colours of the wall mural."
Student: Adam Nuru, Markish Siojo, Dylan Ingle, Fabio Lemos, Xiaohuan Corona Gao Course: B Arch Collaborative Project / Building Lab b.Lab / ARH 498 Tutor: Sameena Sitabkhan, NOMA
Infilling the Void by Kenta Oye
"Urban planning in San Francisco has confined ethnic neighbourhoods to inhuman spaces. My ancestral heritage includes the repeated displacement of the Japanese community to unwanted or forgotten territories.
"The design reveals the lost layers of the site – where the first Japan town took root in 1900 – by activating the alleys, offering a cultural centre that borrows from museum and immigration centre programmes.
"The act of making was the catharsis that enabled this community to cope creatively. Ceramic, wood, and sewing galleries are paired with adjacent workshops, providing spaces to congregate, exchange ideas and share experiences through craft."
Student: Kenta Oye Course: Bachelor of Architecture Thesis Tutor: Philip Ra and Mini Chu
Urban Living Room by Zoe Qiaoyu Zheng
"The project brings neighbourhood life into public space while blurring boundaries and creating conditions of privacy. Public programmes and varied open spaces blend traditional library and private spaces with adjacent buildings.
"The design responds to natural light, wind, and views but also create opportunities to block visual contact with adjacent residences. People are welcome to celebrate their time here, and the architecture makes invisible boundaries to protect their personal space as needed.
"This is not just a library or another place to hang out; the proposal also provides opportunities for people to safely interact in acceptable proximities."
Student: Zoe Qiaoyu Zheng Course: Bachelor of Architecture Thesis Tutor: Philip Ra and Mini Chu

These micro-talks from GDC 2015 are all mind-expanding. If you, like me, missed it at the time, these talks still have a lot of relevance now. More thoughts across the break.
Emily Short (5:58) provides a who's who of the tabletop story game scene circa 2015, all of which deserve the attention of anyone who sees games as a medium for narrative. I think it would be very challenging to adapt any of their mechanics to video games, since they all rely on human intelligence to generate, and then build upon, story beats – and video games can still only respond to player inputs in very specific, limited ways.
Lisa Brown (12:05) describes a way to increase a team's productivity and efficiency. In the process, she unwittingly provides a scathing indictment of the way capitalism alienates workers from their own work. Her experiment demonstrates, in a vivid counter-example, that connecting a worker directly to the intrinsic social value of their work is powerfully motivating.
Matt Boch (18:06) thinks that RPGs, dating sims, and the like, should try procedurally generating the priorities and preferences of their NPCs. The player would then develop general skills and strategies for interacting with NPCs, rather than memorizing deterministically "correct" interactions (or referring to guides to obtain the same info). This is a great idea! Unfortunately, his reasoning behind it is so bad that I needed to write a whole separate article about it.
Naomi Clark's (24:37) talk was hard for me to parse, but it contains a useful reminder: when you prototype a game, it might fail to live up to your design goals – but it is worth considering whether it is able to instead fulfill a different set of goals than the ones you had in mind. Sometimes, very valuable innovations are made by accident, and your "failed prototype" might be an ingenious solution for someone else's design problem.
Tim Rogers (30:36) gives a winding, entertaining anecdote before boiling it down to a thesis I saw once before from Robert Yang: "Isn't criticism just a design document for a better game?" Spoiler: Yes, it is.
Holly Gramazio (37:24) rattles off the rules of 21 simple games that she invented for her talk. It looks like a fun exercise for game designers, but there's no evident thesis to the talk itself.
Celia Pearce (43:36) gives a brief art history lecture about how the Dada and Fluxus movements have involved games, but she never actually answers her title question: what game designers can learn from those movements?
Cara Ellison (50:08) attempts to explain "intersubjectivity" by way of listing various examples of emotional moments in games. I watched it twice, but I still have no idea what the word means, or how to use it to create those emotional moments.
Rami Ismail (56:19) describes, with blistering speed, the way that language barriers are used to oppress and marginalize groups both within the medium and the industry. He also includes a call to action for the industry to do better, with suggestions for how.

(For English description, please see below.)
"Not sure where to go Stuck in a place where there is no exit Many roads are blocked Down car mirror and see it is a long queue And lost hope to reach home soon All we want is to get home before it gets dark" “I Am Just Stuck“  by Rohingya Refugee Poet Ro Yassin Abdumonab Do you remember the last time you were forced to migrate or stay? When did COVID-19 start to affect our relations and interactions? In order to find another possibility, people have embarked on the routes of migration to seek a place where they are no longer just passing by. However, within the turbulence of drift, freedom is not always guaranteed. When the pandemic has established new walls, human beings are forced into isolation. The epidemic ignores borders and permeates every section of the drifting routes of displaced people. Coinciding with World Refugee Day on June 20, this exhibition in collaboration  with the reporters from Taiwan and the UK, displays the diverse daily life of refugees from #Syria, #Venezuela, #Gaza and #Rohingya people across the world. Through their voices, videos, images and stories, the exhibition disseminates the words of each refugee individual who is eager to voice out across borders under the COVID-19 crisis. The exhibition also invites audiences to engage in and interact with the refugees who are thousands of kilometres away and seek the route together. The life experiences of us, from different backgrounds,  and towards different destinations, may be overlapped, intersected, and connected  through more imaginations. Note: In this exhibition, the definition of “refugee” is not constrained to The UN Refugee Agency’s definition, but rather a general concept. It includes those who are forced to cross a national border to seek asylum owing to unwilling reasons.

The best free PC games – 16th November 2018
Some video games, not all video games (however some) have a level of representational motion in them. A few years in the past I went to see a panel dialogue of designers on the Southbank Centre (a dream lineup: Naomi Alderman, Cara Ellison, Emily Quick, and Meg Jayanth; moderated by Simon Parkin) one of many designers talked about the best way gamers routinely discover the results of their very own interactivity via motion. “Gamers instantly say one thing like, ‘Oh, that’s me,’ as soon as they’re capable of transfer one thing on display screen.” she mentioned. I’ve been interested by it ever since.
Controllers, mice and keyboards, buttons, joysticks — they’re sometimes there to mediate motion inside an interface. Generally there’s a level of free company there, however typically there are extra constraints than we’d like. Generally the physics reply in methods we don’t anticipate, or the representations we management give us pause.
Think about this the primary of a two-part collection on motion. There are the methods characters or representations transfer and convey embodiment, after which there are the areas via which these representations transfer. What’s it prefer to have/management/inhabit a physique? What’s it prefer to work together, or to interface, with a gamespace? See if any of those video games transfer you.
QWOP by Bennett Foddy
Look. I’m studying a number of Foucault proper now, so simply follow me on this one: Foucault tells us by no means to search for origins, as a result of “origins” are all made up, however QWOP is An Authentic. QWOP was one of many first video games I ever performed which was exhausting for causes apart from “crushing fight” or “inscrutable techniques and UI.” It was exhausting as a result of ragdoll our bodies are unwieldy and cumbersome.
In QWOP you’re the runner QWOP, “our nation’s sole consultant on the Olympic Video games.” You utilize the keys Q, W, O and P to maneuver your legs (helpfully separated into THIGHS and CALVES), and you’ll very probably fail to run even 100 metres. I really feel like quite a bit has been mentioned about QWOP over the ten years it has been out, however it’s nonetheless a triumph. Oh, and Pleased Birthday, QWOP!
Contact Melbourne by Andrew Gleeson and Cecile Richard
What number of small issues do you assume you contact in in the future? Contact Melbourne, from (the place else?) Melbourne-based builders Andrew Gleeson and Cecile Richard, permits you to discover town “via its varied, tiny on a regular basis interactions.” The sport efficiently captures what it’s prefer to journey areas in a metropolis along with your arms from texting to tapping your metro card. It’s candy, superbly designed, and price your time.
The Tearoom by Robert Yang
Robert Yang has been making video games about embodiment, homosexual tradition, and intimacy for some time now. In The Tearoom, you play as a homosexual man in Ohio, 1962 soliciting intercourse in a public lavatory. Yang was impressed by true occasions in Mansfield, Ohio the place the police division “arrange a hidden surveillance digital camera behind a two-way mirror and secretly filmed dudes having intercourse with dudes in a public lavatory.” The police then used that footage as proof to imprison them.
There are many Yang’s video games which convey embodiment. Harm Me Lots, for instance, is a spanking simulator. Rinse and Repeat is about giving males soapy massages in a gymnasium bathe. What strikes me about The Tearoom specifically is talked about in Yang’s write up of the sport on his weblog. Yang says, “a long time of male heterosexual hegemony have educated players into considering of ‘trying’ as a ‘free’ motion, with few penalties or outcomes.” What does it imply to look in video games? What “free actions” have been taken as a right?
Swallow by Emily Flynn-Jones
Emily Flynn-Jones is an instructional out of York College, Toronto by the use of Wales. She’s written a few books, based and labored on some extraordinarily cool initiatives, and nonetheless manages to make video games in her spare time about feminism, grief and loss, and incapacity. Suffice to say that they run the emotional gamut.
Flynn-Jones introduced Swallow at this yr’s QGCon throughout a very shifting speak about video games and incapacity with kara Stone. The Twine sport is a uncooked and visceral look into what it’s prefer to have a disordered relationship with meals and alcohol. Out of the blue rendered unable to comfortably swallow meals, Flynn-Jones recounts her years with sicknesses which have an effect on her physique via textual content. I’m reminded of Nina Freeman’s Mangia, and each video games do an achieved job of discussing a fraught relationship with the act of consuming.
Sensible Kissing Simulator by Jimmy Andrews and Loren Schmidt
It’s like QWOP, however for kissin’.

Data Center Consolidation: Measuring Latency Effects on Application Service Quality
Intel IT’s data center strategy described in “Data Center Strategy Leading Intel’s Business Transformation” could make one think: “If consolidating data centers has a positive outcome, why not consolidate all of Intel IT’s data centers into a very small number, like two or three?”
The strategy must balance consolidation cost and resource utilization wins against service quality. A key part of that service quality is application performance. Intel chip designers use interactive applications that are highly sensitive to latency. The further the distance that a server running these applications is from the user, the higher the latency. High latency is very noticeable to interactive design application users, negatively affecting productivity. How do you quantify interactive performance application to be able to make a data driven decision on when to consolidate and when not?
The Solution
Intel IT’s solution has been to create an automated application that performs graphically intensive operations similar to that done by chip designers. This graphical benchmark includes operations like dragging and dropping, opening windows, and writing text. The time to complete these operations in normal conditions along with other factors like network bandwidth. The automated test has the advantage of being reproducible, making it highly useful for establishing performance benchmark measurements that can be compared to proposed data center layouts and latencies, as well as when debugging problems.
The Evaluation
I first learned about this work when I was assigned to select which virtual desktop software package would be best for the design environment. In addition, I was asked to see whether any performed well enough under higher latencies to possible enable consolidation of any data centers. After modifying the graphic performance app to work under any virtual desktop system, I ran our graphical benchmark under various latencies over Intel’s network.
We used the slow-motion benchmarking1 technique, a method of comparing interactive performance that contrasts network traffic under optimal conditions to traffic under the measured, higher latency conditions. As expected, performance degraded under higher latencies for all the software evaluated, so we couldn’t move interactive design applications to other data centers without a significant penalty.
Design applications are not the only ones that require a local data center. Intel’s manufacturing generates so much data that having data centers near our factories is the only practical choice for running Advanced Data Analytics. Service Quality, and latency, is a factor that we have incorporated into our data center strategy.
