Traveling Carnival AU
(Idea based off this prompt but otherwise not at all haha)
Naoko and Kai have been working for a country-wide traveling carnival for a few years, never having time to settle in one place for too long due to work. They’re both fine with this lifestyle, since whilst they don’t always quite enjoy their work, they enjoy each others company and their chats between events.
Their next stop is semi-permanent, which turns into a little bit of a worry when on the first night, they each fall in love at first sight.
During their days off, the two of them head off into the town center and try to find the person they saw; after all, it’s not a huge town, they can’t be that hard to find, right?
Naoko is the first one to find the black haired boy she’d seen amongst the crown in front of her darts stall, but when she has a second glance of the sneak picture Kai had taken of the long blonde haired girl who’d caught his eye, she fires off a worrying text.
‘I think we fell in love with two halves of the same couple.’

Fruits Basket AU
because i sold my fruba manga collection and i am sad
‘Tohru’: Naoko Rat: Yasuo Cat: Makoto Dog: Masa Boar: Kaede Rabbit: Mitsuki Dragon (Seahorse): Akira Cow: Mamoru Snake: Hajime Monkey: Ichi Tiger: Kaiya Sheep: Naoki Horse: Sakura Rooster: Kai God: Yukito
Naoko’s not had the worst start to her first of college, but things could have gone better. Suddenly finding herself with no place to live and only her meagre wage to go on, she has to camp out in the woods for a little bit before she can get back on her feet. What she doesn’t realise is that the place she’s pitched her tent is actually private property! Thankfully, the owners are people she vaguely knows from college - Yasuo, Makoto and Masa - and although Makoto flat out despises the idea, the girl ends up living in their spare bedroom.
But whilst setting up her new room, Naoko discovers there’s another side to this large family that she cannot tell anyone: if a member of the Tsutome family comes into close contact with a member of the opposite sex to them, then they transform into an animal from the Chinese Zodiac! There’s a lot of things that can go wrong, but as long as she keeps the secret, then how many things can she help turn right again? Or will she just run into more problems than she ever thought existed for this strange family?

[a quick key before i get too carried away: bold - skype name, italics - pre-recorded youtube/stream audio]
...and so that’s the end of this week’s recap of shit that’s happened both on and off the channel. Don’t forget to do all the usual stuff you lovelies do, and I’ll see you later! G’bye~!
Makoto sighed as he let the short outro music play on yet another one of her videos that he’d ended up watching, even though his obligation to her was over. He’d never really meant to get into the whole youtube culture, only putting up a video about him raging over a new game because he was fed up of people saying it was good, and then suddenly he had over a million subscribers and a weekly schedule. The convention he’d met Naoko at was his first one, and to find one of his ‘original subscribers’, in her words at least, ended up being more scary than endearing. Not that she’d come specifically for him, like a few other fans had, but it was just pure chance.
{ headbandwarrior is now online! }
m4k0t0: i watched your stupid videos are you happy now? headbandwarrior: sihfjkdsfds headbandwarrior: videos? plural?
“Fuck," he grumbled, closing the web-browser entirely and going back to editing on his main screen, pushing skype to his second monitor.
m4k0t0: yeah well youtube has that stupid autoplay function now m4k0t0: and i was busy editing my own shit and it was just on headbandwarrior: well whatever you say as long as you watched one i’m super happy!! headbandwarrior is typing...
“Jesus she’d fallen asleep at the keyboard again," Makoto sighed, minimising the window and concentrating on editing his latest five hour recording session down to their publishable states. He’d given himself two hours to do this, but seeing the orange icon flashing on his taskbar made him start to rethink the estimate. Especially with the message he saw next.
headbandwarrior: i mean, if you liked my videos (or video, if that’s the story you want to go with) then my offer of doing a collab or just even doing some dumb MK races on twitch one day is still out there! m4k0t0: you do realise i said that just to get away from you headbandwarrior: so then why did you give me your actual skype name and not the fake one on your profile? m4k0t0: you’re an asshole and i hate you
{ m4k0t0 is now offline! }
“You’re the asshole," Naoko chuckled to herself, sliding out of the skype application on her tablet and looking back up to the television to the side of her. "Sorry guys, I just had to reply to a message and it takes forever to type on a touchscreen sometimes," she smiled, talking directly to the rather full twitch chat audience whilst un-pausing the game she was playing. "That run was dead anyway, so I should tell you guys some interesting news..."

Forehead Touches
Naoko looked up and down at herself in the full length mirror, thumb tucked under one of her bra straps, and sighed. What she was wearing wasn't the problem, it was what was missing that scared her the most. To anyone who simply passed her would not have noticed, but all who knew her well would spot it straight away; she was without her blue headband.
The scar wasn't even that noticeable at a distance, looking more like a thin red line at best, but to her it had been something of a memory she didn't want to share with herself, never mind others. Only a few of her closest friends knew the full story about what happened, and even fewer had actually seen the scar itself.
That night, she was determined to finally show one more person.

Headband
Naoko had been noticing it more and more lately, and with her first day back in school after the summer holidays around the corner, she was getting slowly more and more self-concious. She'd had a bit of a growth spurt over the past two weeks, and the line on her forehead was the only thing she could concentrate on every time she looked in a mirror.
"Mummy," the young brunette looked up to her mother one morning, taking her larger hand and running a finger down the dent. "It's gotten bigger, people will make fun of me."
"I thought you were looking in the mirror a lot more lately," Mei nodded, her warm smile confusing her daughter. "I have something for you, just wait here."
"Okay," Naoko shrugged, standing on her tiptoes as Mei left the room to continue staring at her forehead.
"Close your eyes, Nao," her mother whispered, stooping to one knee. She waited as Naoko's eyes closed, her look of confusion turning to a smile, wanting to know what the surprise was. She managed to keep her eyes shut as her mother tied a thin, blue headband around the girl's head, tucking part of it behind her hair but making sure it was secure. "There you go."
"Can I wear it in school?" Naoko asked straight away, standing on tiptoes once again to stare in the mirror, but this time with a large smile on her face.
"Of course, but you just have to promise me one thing," Mei smiled, gently turning Naoko towards her and pressing a kiss to the new accessory. "I want you to feel as comfortable as you can be with yourself. You might only wear this for a couple of weeks, you might wear it for the rest of your life. But it's a reminder that I'm always going to be there, protecting whatever insecurities you have about yourself."
"Thank you, mummy," Naoko beamed, a little too young to understand the words, but as she looks back on this memory almost every time she has to readjust her now symbolic headband, the words keep her going strong.

Bird Hybrids
Humans weren't meant to fly, but there is a growing group that keep their winged society to themselves. They scatter amongst the forest that snakes its way up a large mountain, doing anything they can to protect themselves from the outside world. No-one quite knows why children sometimes grow wings, but they always find their way to the safe space a few weeks before they sprout.
Naoko has been a part of the group since she was ten, having quietly left home when she felt a strange calling. She was glad to have similar people, despite being confused at first, since the month that her wings grew in was frightening and painful. She's since learned to adapt, and often helps protect the new children as they earn their own wings.
Makoto, on the other hand, is a late developer. He already had his hands full with his werewolf instincts, but the calling came to him just a few days prior. If nothing but out of interest, he found the space, but they were concerned. They could sense both wolven spirit and kindred bird within him, which was something they had never come across before.
Naoko is assigned to the strange boy, despite her wishes to stay away, and watches over him. He heard the call, and has the possibility to change, but she wonders if he will ever gain his wings, or if he will transform and threaten their way of life.

Cardcaptor Naoko
It had all started with that pink book she'd found just over a week ago in the library whilst searching in the college library for some critics for a later essay. Not that many people used the library for the books, more for checking their social media websites during free periods, so there were usually many duplicates of books. The one she took out looked quite old, but well kept and drew her towards it in more way than one. It was completely out of place in the poetry section, and she wasn't even quite sure why she was even there in the first place; the next essay due in was on prose, and she didn't often go to the library in the first place. When she went to take out her pile of books, the librarian didn't scan the pink book, assuming it to be one of Naoko's own, so the girl just rolled with it and shoved it in her bag.
As soon as she got home that night, she laid it out on the table and inspected it as much as she could. It proved to be more difficult than she first assumed, since she hadn't realised that the wing clasp holding the book shut was actually locked. There didn't appear to be a key, or even a place to put one, but she studied the rest of the book closely just in case. The name 'Sakura' was in a banner in large print at the top, and just underneath was a winged star. The main feature that still interested her the most was the golden winged lion, just behind an embossed gold star. The back has another winged start at the top, a large silver moon at the bottom, with some kind of magical circle with a star, moon and sun. Whilst interesting, it didn't give her any clues as to what was inside.
She kept looking at it every morning, every time she got back from college, and glancing over at it every now and again. She researched the book more than anything she was supposed to be doing, but there was nothing. She didn't want to take pictures of it, just in case the library realised she'd taken it out without them realising, and tried every search term for 'magical circle' she could think of but still nothing.
Last night, she finally found out what was inside.
Just as she was getting ready to get some sleep, since she had just the one early lesson the next day, there was some weird pulsation feeling from the book still lying on her desk. Naoko rubbed her eyes, sleepily trudging over to it and taking the book with both hands. She didn't think that she'd nudged the clasp, and hadn't even been touching it lately, but she realised that it was undone when the cold metal brushed against the back of her hand. Nervous but more curious than ever before, she pulled aside the thick cover over the book and noticed that it was more of a small chest than a book as it contained what looked to be a deck of tarot cards. Resting the book down on the table, the brunette picked up the first card expecting it to be something similar but was surprised.
"The Windy?" Naoko quoted from the bottom of the suitably pink card, and was blinded by the light and large gust of wind that soon followed. The card was immediately swiped from her loose grasp, and by trying to grab it once had taken a tight hold of one of the other cards that were flying through every corner of her small room. She would have grabbed more if they hadn't already disappeared by the time she realised what was going on. Stumbling back onto her bed, the book rested from spewing cards left and right on the table as she decided to look over the new card in her hand. 'The Windy' was long gone by now, one labelled 'The Sword' now in its place: pictured was a long rapier with a wing design for a hilt, all chained up as if holding back the power. No surprise, with whatever had just happened with the previous one.
If that had been all that had happened, she probably could have slept the shock off after a while.
Just as she lay back on top of her duvet, eyes still focused on the card, she noticed a faint light coming from the desk, getting brighter as the empty book lifted itself up. It became blinding once again, as the large winged lion from the cover disappeared and emerged into the room as a small cub-like plush-looking creature with wings. Naoko first thought that she'd actually fallen asleep before, but that loud yawn was something she'd never heard before, and couldn't even think of dreaming about. It looked so familiar for some reason though...
"Such a short nap, everything feels great~!" The thing spoke with a strong accent, definitely not from around where she lived. "Time to just check up on all the little card friends- EH?"
"What the hell is going on?"
After a long conversation, to which the creature introduced himself as Keroberos, guardian of the seal, and convinced Naoko that she wasn't dreaming, the last thing that she wanted to bring up was where all the cards had gone. Unfortunately, since he was supposed to be looking after them all, and she was still holding one, it was inevitable.
"So I've had the book for about a week, but then today I felt a weird power coming out of it. It finally opened up and I had a look at the first card in the deck, which was Windy or something and then there was just wind everywhere. "So you're saying that they're all gone?"
"Yeah."
The two laughed for a while before Kero started to search desperately for anywhere in the room that the cards could be hiding, then realising they really were gone and slouching with a sob over the empty book.
"I only took a short 30 year nap..."
"Short?" Naoko laughed, looking back over to the card in her hand. "So you're the one who was on the front of the cover, looking after all of these magical cards through all of these years... Created by Clow Reed and then transformed by Sakura Kinomoto..."
"And now you have to go and find them and capture them all over again, since I'm choosing you to be the next Cardcaptor!"
"W-Wait, what?"
"You're the one who let them all out, and you have some magical power otherwise the book wouldn't have opened for you. Besides, you already have one card there, so you should really sign your name on it. Oh, but only after I officially acknowledge you as the newest candidate."
There were so many questions running through Naoko's mind, and they only grew as the room grew darker as the magic circle from the back of the book appeared around the small creature. Everything else disappeared before what appeared to be stars took their place around them both, and Naoko realised she was also stood inside the magic circle.
"Key of the seal, here is someone wishing to make a contract with you," Kero began in a much more serious tone to the light hearted one just moments before. From the wing clasp of the book appeared a small ball of light, floating towards the still confused looking Naoko. "A girl by the name of Naoko. Oh key, grant her the power! Release!" At this, the small light grew brighter, and Naoko had to shield her eyes for the umpteenth time that night. A small shadow grew larger, and when she just about managed to open her eyes to see through the bright light, she could make out a long magical staff floating in front of her, waiting expectantly. "Oi, take the staff!" Kero shouted, shaking the brunette from her daydreaming stance to reach out and take the light object with one hand.
As she stood there, looking down at the long, obnoxiously pink staff, topped with another winged star, the room returned to normal but everything else felt completely different. Everything was changing, and there was absolutely nothing she could do about it. Naoko was the newest 'Cardcaptor'.
And yet, the night still wasn't over.
Kero had admitted that everything was a lot to take in at once, and there weren't any strong feelings of any of the Sakura cards near by, so after signing her name at the bottom of the sole card she had, they decided to get some sleep. After all, from now on, they had to be alert for anything that would lead them to the missing cards.
Unfortunately, a jolt of familiarity shot through both Naoko and Kero just as they'd settled down. Naoko wasn't entirely sure what the feeling was, but it was similar to the one she got when finding the book for the first time.
"It's a card!" Kero announced, immediately flying up to the window as Naoko slowly slid out of bed and wandered over to follow him. The night had been as clear as the day, with stars just about visible over the streetlights, but all of a sudden, large clouds had started to gather around the neighbourhood from seemingly nowhere. There was no wind to blow them close, and they weren't drifting away. "Definitely The Cloud, I wouldn't mistake it!"
"Big clouds created by The Cloud card... I wouldn't have it any other way," Naoko yawned, turning to the book which had the key form of the staff she had held just moments ago resting atop. Next to it was a small sheet of paper in which she had written down everything important: she had asked Kero if there was anything she needed to remember in regards to the staff and the cards, and apparently there were a few chants that she needed to remember. Knowing her bad memory, writing them down was the best cause of action, and in her sleep deprived state was even more thankful.
There apparently wasn't any time to change, so she had to just climb out of her window in 'pyjamas', which to Naoko meant whatever t-shirt she'd been wearing that day and a pair of cotton shorts, added a pair of well worn trainers so she wasn't chasing a cloud spirit around barefoot and took the piece of paper along with the single card she had.
Naoko followed Kero and her feeling down the empty streets towards the local park, where the clouds were a lot lower than anywhere else, close enough to almost touch. There was thankfully no-one else around, which made her feel a lot more comfortable in both what she was wearing and the fight that was going to go down.
"Naoko, you should transform the key first and then unleash The Sword card you have," Kero suggested, glaring at the darkest cloud spot that was getting closer to the ground and inching towards them. He sighed however when he turned back to the girl reading the small piece of paper a few times to get everything in her mind.
"The key which hides powers of the Stars, show your true form before me!" Naoko called out, the words feeling much more natural than they should have been from rehearsing them just moments before. "I, Naoko, command you under our contract. Release!"
The staff spun in the palm of one hand as it extended to its full form, stopping comfortably as she grabbed it with both hands. She ran towards the pitch black cloud that was swirling in an ominous fashion, pulling out the only card she had at her disposal.
"The card created by Clow and transformed by Sakura, lend your powers to the key!" Again, the words just flowed out. She hadn't even really looked at the words on the piece of paper, but she knew that they were slightly different to what Kero had written down for her. "Transfer the magic dwelling within the card to this key, and grant me your power! Sword!" As she finished the incantation, she threw the card out in front of her, pointing the end with the star towards the floating card and not quite knowing what to expect.
The staff began to change once again, and for a moment Naoko was worried that she'd messed up some of the words and that it was going to turn back into the key again, but once her grip on the staff began to feel somewhat more familiar in a different way, her running pace slowed. Whereas before it had been baton-like, the staff was now flat and as sharp as a razor, the wing decorated hilt of the rapier wrapping comfortably around her hand. It was a lot lighter than she was used to, since Naoko often trained with heavier long-swords, but the idea was the same. The magic from within the card felt much too strong to handle at its full capacity, and as she finally stopped under the centre of the building clouds she managed to focus so that the energy within the sword and her body were equal.
"Naoko, watch out!" Kero yelled, spotting a spiral of clouds heading right towards the still bewildered girl. She panicked, swiping the sword quickly behind her with one hand and having to stop herself from over-extending. The sword itself didn't cut through the cloud, but sent a shockwave that sliced it instead, letting the half that remained retreat back into the central mass. "Yeah, that's it~! Keep going, Naoko~!"
"I have to get closer..." she pondered aloud, twisting and turning to look for something that could help. There were a lot of trees around, but only one that looked easy to climb and also tall enough to reach where the cloud had lowered itself. "Kero, can you create a distraction?"
"Eh? Me?!" Kero complained, but she had already started making her way towards the tall tree, cutting at the attacking clouds whenever they came too close. "You're already using too much energy and you'll tire yourself out even more... Looks like I have no choice!" He swallowed, flying close to the rumbling clouds but opposite where Naoko was now scrambling up the tree, holding onto the sword as best she could at the same time. "Oooi, Cloud card! Come over here- ack!"
"Kero, be careful!" Naoko called out, watching him awkwardly dodge the shots of thick cloud aiming for him. She sighed, standing on a thick supportive branch and trying to balance herself as best as she could. Even on flat ground, she would fall over nothing, but there was a power of professional swordsmanship mixing with her own energy to giver her slightly better footing than usual. Didn't mean that she wasn't scared since she knew she'd have to jump to even have a chance of injuring the main part of the cloud.
"H-Here I go!" she shouted, running from the middle of the branch and using the natural spring in it to help herself launch from it a little higher, slashing the purple cloud into a square shape to cut of all its attacking parts as best she could before tumbling down to the ground. Kero tried to fly over to her in time, but she just rolled awkwardly onto the ground and popped up again, the sword having changed back into its card form and the staff lying next to her feet.
"Look, it's back in it's normal form," Kero pointed out, having made sure that the girl wasn't injured too badly first. They both looked up at the cloud as it sunk down to ground level, growing out it's square form into a small, lightly coloured cloud, and noticed a small spirit pop out of it. It looked a little like a small elven child, being one with the cloud. "Quick, before it has a chance to build up again!"
"R-Right," Naoko nodded, bending down and taking the staff in both hands. She thought about checking the piece of paper once more, but the magic circle had appeared under her once more, and the words were already on the tip of her tongue; "Return to the guise you were meant to be in! Sakura Card!"
Although the fight should have been painful for the card, or so Naoko thought, the figure did not put up any resistance to retuning to a spirit form, the power it contained flying towards the circle and manifesting into a card above the spinning star. Once finished, it floated down into her hand to join The Sword card, where she could take a proper look at it.
"The Cloud... You did it, Naoko!" Kero celebrated, looking over Naoko's shoulder at the figure now encased in the pink card. "We have to get home and make sure that you're okay, and then sign the card so that it really is yours~"
"My card, huh..." Naoko mumbled, falling into a seated position on the grass before lying back and looking at the two cards, their backdrop a now much clearer sky with stars still managing to shine as the sun was starting to light up the earth. "I guess... it isn't too bad, huh."
Somehow, the pair got home. Naoko complained about how tired she was the whole way, as well as all of the new cuts and bruises she was bound to wake up with in the morning, before realising that it was already morning and that she'd have no energy for college in a few hours. Still, between whining about the time and finding more scars, she talked excitedly about how the magic in the cards had felt so strong, but had still managed to use it effectively.
Maybe being a 'Cardcaptor' wouldn't be too bad after all?

Teachers
"Miss, there's someone at the door," one of Naoko's students pointed out, making the teacher look up from her desk. It was a student from another class, looking like she was about to pass out from a rush of blood to the head. She made her way out into the corridor and looked down to the embarrassed looking girl.
"It's a note from Mr Tsutome," she managed to spit out, holding the folded note over to the teacher. "I didn't mean to read it, but I dropped it on the way here and-"
"I'll give you 50 house points and a fiver if you don't mention anything," she sighed, not even reading the note as she stuck it into her blazer pocket.
"I wouldn't have said anything anyway, because you and-"
"Shh," Naoko stopped her, taking out the girl's house point card that was sticking out of her pocket and signing a large chunk of it. "Go back to class and tell sir that I'll talk to him at lunch time."
"Y-yes miss!"
Back in the classroom, there was an expectant silence.
"I'll put you all in detention if you don't get back to talking."
Suddenly, the room sprung back into action.

Master / Android
In the future, androids are not a type of phone operating system, but what had just been science fiction is now a reality. The technology into making human like robots has improved so much that they are almost indistinguishable from humans; if they didn't have their serial numbers on the top of their right cheek, then it would almost be impossible.
Whilst these androids are a common occurrence, older models are usually only found in the poorer areas of cities or in junk shops. Naoko was lucky enough to find hers thrown out in an alleyway one night, and even then it was a very up-to-date model. After working on the male android day and night for a few weeks, she finally manages to boot up the system to a working condition, unfortunately having to wipe everything but his personality and work data. Makot-0 sticks out in Naoko's neck of the woods for more than the obvious reason, and it sometimes makes her wish she'd gotten rid of his personality.
Whilst he's somewhat loyal, and usually does his job in exchange for his maintenance, he keeps his serial number covered with a plaster and has a very sarcastic and angry attitude. Naoko doesn't mind all too much, and enjoys bantering with the robot, but is there something about him that makes him stand out even more?

Naoko closed the two year diary as best she could, pulling an elastic band around it to make sure stray bits of paper didn't fly out, before slipping it into her shoulder bag. She then pulled out her phone, sliding a few things around the screen and tapping quick replies to multiple emails. She was always busy, barely sleeping, but she enjoyed being busy.
Her boss slept a lot better than she did, since he only came in at the usual hours of nine to five, and even then was hardly in the office. She made sure that he was busy most of the time, so that he only had to talk to important people, but also had to make sure to make plans for down time, lunch and the occasional 'spontaneous' nap. She handled all of the phone calls before they forwarded into his office, only forwarded emails that were from his brother, and ordered all of his meals.
At the beginning, there was no way that she'd even roll her eyes behind Makoto's back, but now just over a year after her employment she was the only one in the head office who could casually insult him without being thrown out of a window, never mind thrown out of the business. She was glad, since even if she wanted to it was hard to keep the polite attitude all of the time when she was running on twenty minutes of sleep.

Dance Moms AU
Naoko Ono Dance Company is one of the top dancing companies in the country, and people pay a lot of money to get in with her. Usually it’s the mums that go in and support their daughters, but as a single father, Makoto is the one who pays the dues. His dislike of people in general doesn’t help his popularity with the other competition group girl’s mothers.
On the other hand, Naoko doesn’t take any crap from any of the mothers, and especially not Makoto. Week after week they argue and fight, but the respect for each other grows and grows. Can a woman who puts her heart into dance and a father who lost his only love find a middle ground together?
