Fuck it, I can't decide what to write for nanowrino so I'm taking the decision out if my hands. This is a poll to help me decide which of these concepts to commit to; if you like, you can vote based on vibes, but there's gonna be a synopsis/explanation of each under the cut.
Scarlet Signs - Sci fi rough draft of chaos nonsense
I don't have names for the space species, yet, so just be forgiving okay
In essence, humanity joins the Galactic Assembly, and the pacifist psychic space vampires are one of their only outright allies. The unicorns have never liked the vampires because the vampires practice isolationism, pacifism, and don't like to share their research or their military support. Not to mention, the vampires are, you know, vampires that consume thought and concepts in order to sustain themselves. Unicorns feed on blood, but that's fine since obviously they only feed on non sentient beings, and the vampires have to feed on conscious thought. Humans come under the protections of the vampires, unicorns, start shit, and unicorns find out that the vampires are pacifist for everyone else's sake rather than their own.
Expressways - zombie post apoc, but like, a long time since the fall and zombies are just a thing the same way stray/outdoor cats are a thing
Every child from coast to coast knows the story; in the aftermath of plague, infighting, and the emergence of the Pests, the old Pony Express was reinstated to handle package and letter delivery so as to spare the use of fuel and keep the continent as intact as possible. It's not an easy job, but every courier is provided for and deeply respected by those they deliver for. Fewer people sign up to learn the routes each year, but even one courier is better than none.
Jethro, Maverick, and Harper have been couriers for nearly thirty years each. When they stop in for their latest deliveries, a pair of fresh faces are handed off to them to learn their first routes. Colt and Montana learn how to deal with each other, why no courier travels alone, and how to best avoid a Pest nest.
Halls of Hexes - magic academy where magic is taught and students don't usually die.
Mostly fixated on the teachers of the school as they try to handle an encroaching eldritch horror that really shouldn't be there. Magic beyond minor levitation or very simple enchantments is cast using a focus that's personalized to each individual. Magical creatures such as fairies, elves, angels, demons, centaurs, etc. are treated as citizens of the magical world, and several classes have magical creature teachers. Magic is just a normal part of life and while some choose to pursue it, most people just go about normal lives by choice.
Skyreach Academy has maintained a position of academic prestige on the global stage for generations, with particular pride regarding their extensive programs on Vile and Etheric magics. This position is upheld by excellent staff, along with the small town of Elkmarrow, which provides support for the students and faculty within the academy.
Magic, however, can draw in strange and unwelcome visitors. Practiced and versed magicians know that all magic runs the risk, so when no one in the school can find their reflections in mirrors or puddles, the best among them set to work. The safety of the students, of course, remains of the utmost importance - even if the students seem to delight in the fact the professors are now the ones missing class.
Frontiers and Faultlines - steampunk post apocalypse fun times
Most of the world was decimated save for a handful of cities who managed to build walls, domes, and foundations strong enough to withstand the massive natural disaster which raged beyond their borders. Communication was mainly maintained through rail lines.
Story focuses on Vasev, Absalom, Malory "Mal", and Cantrelle. Absalom and Vasev are scientists, Mal is a bounty hunter, and Cantrelle is an assassin for hire. Vasev and Absalom are trying to get the trains working again after a horrific accident ( read: targeted attack ) mangled the machines. Mal and later Centrelle are handling the rough and tumble "get rid of the ones responsible" side of things.

“They used to say that moms had a way of just knowing,” Kai commented off-hand, fiddling with the pieces of his handgun. They all had to return to duty together soon; Evelyn could only spare them for so long.
“That’s bullshit,” Charlie said. “It’s just confirmation bias when someone guesses right, but it’s still just a guess.”
Beside her, Dalton snorted. “You think you couldn’t tell?” He sat up straight before the words even finished leaving his mouth, looking like he’d just gotten punched. “Sorry, I didn’t mean-”
“It’s fine,” Charlie said, brushing him off, even though Osker could see the brief flicker of regret that crossed her features.

Prompt Response #2
*taken from a scene from my NaNoWriMo fic. Prompt is: “Why are you so nice to me?” *
Fandom: The X-Files.
Context: Teri and Spender are in the same class at Quantico. They haven’t been getting along but lately it seems like a different emotion is brewing between them. After an accidental meeting at the pool, Teri tries to get back to her dorm room to sort out her frustration at not being able to get him off of her mind. He surprises her as she’s walking.
_____________________________
“You don’t like the song?”
The voice right behind her made Teri whip around with a yelp, and Spender took a quick step backwards, holding up his hand. “Sorry!”
“Geez, Spender!” Teri yanked off her headphones. “What’s your deal sneaking up behind me?”
“I called your name several times. It’s not my fault you had headphones on.”
“So, tap my shoulder!”
“What, you think that wouldn’t have startled you?”
Was he smiling? Yes, he was. He was teasing her. And the streetlight was showing that the water droplets in his hair hadn’t evaporated yet. They were twinkling like a bunch of little stars. That, combined with his nearly impish smile was making it far too difficult to think. Teri sighed and aimed her gaze at his face. “What do you want?”
“What are you doing tonight?”
Not…the first thing she had expected him to say. But she’d be lying if she said she hadn’t been hoping he would.
“I figured I’d circle the campus and find a few more lost objects. Seems like when I find them, their owners show up behind me and scare me.”
He laughed, his eyes crinkling and his shoulders shaking slightly and she couldn’t stop watching him. “Yes, thank you for that, by the way. I uh…I have two watches.” He stuck his hand in his pocket and pulled out a cloth-banded digital watch. Teri didn’t doubt for a second that it was waterproof. “I use this one for timing. I usually leave the other one in a locker, but I forgot to take it off today and…I just tossed it on the towel, thinking I would remember it. And…I didn’t. So…thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
He gestured. “So. Where’s the best place to look for lost objects?”
Teri blinked. “Are you coming with me?”
“I think I’d like to know where a good place to lose something is so I know I’ll get it back.”
Teri stared at him, realizing she literally had no idea what to say. It sounded like he was flirting with her. But even after everything, after the diner, after that night at Key of X, the concept of Jeffrey Spender flirting with her was just too bizarre to grasp. How did we get here? What the hell happened?
“Maybe I’ll just let Lost and Found deal with the lost objects tonight,” she finally said.
She could have sworn Spender looked disappointed. “Ah. Well, if you have any tips, I’ll take them.”
“Why are you being so nice to me?”
It wasn’t the question she wanted to ask but it was definitely the one that came out of her mouth. And then suddenly she couldn’t stop. “I mean, you gave me a ride that day, and…that whole thing with my brother, and then the other night at Key of X, you sang ‘Imagine’, I mean…that…well it felt like you were talking to me all over again.” She could feel the heat of a blush crawling up her face. Could I be any more self-centered? “And now suddenly you’re asking me what I’m doing on a Friday night and it seems like you wanna, I don’t know, hang out. But we don’t…hang out. What…why are you suddenly being so nice? Are you still pitying me because of Sidney, or…”
“No!” He held up a hand, and then looked hesitant. “I’m sorry, were you done?”
“Not really but I guess the main question’s out.” Kill me now. God she was hot. She was blushing hard enough to be a small sun, she was pretty sure.
“Which was?” He held up a finger. “You did ask a few…”
“Why are you being so nice to me?”
“Is there a reason I shouldn’t?”
Teri blinked. “Spender, you call me Magpie because  you say talk too much, you’re constantly criticizing my choices in our scenarios, you’re judging me every time you look at me…”
“That isn’t true.”
“Is too!”
“I call you Magpie because you do talk a lot and I challenge you to tell me that isn’t true.” He glared at her and Teri bit her lip., desperate to burst out with a dozen other defenses but just as desperate to hear his answer. When she didn’t reply, he kept going. “That’s what I thought. You don’t like me calling you Magpie? Then stop calling me Priss. Yes, I take care with how I look. Yes, I follow the rules stringently. And yes, maybe I do follow them too stringently. But we’re in training. We’re learning how to do this. You learn the constraints of the box you’re in before you start thinking outside of it. You learn what the rules are so you know how far to push them later. You don’t just operate on your gut instinct all the time.” His voice took on a slight sneer, that same condescending tone he employed every time he was talking down to her and Teri opened her mouth furiously as her anger flared.
Spender didn’t stop. “Gut instincts are good. But you follow procedure with them. You take the precautions. You back yourself up as much as you need to because if something goes wrong, you need to defend yourself with those rules.”
Teri stopped. It was a logical argument, but it still didn’t excuse his criticisms…
“I do criticize you and I suppose I could word things differently, but I’m not going to stop telling you when I think you’re making a poor or dangerous decision. And as for judging you…” He stopped, his mouth open, his voice catching on the word. “That’s…just how you take it, I guess. Most of the time when I’m looking at you, I’m wondering what you’re going to do next and how as your partner I can prepare to back you up.”
Most of the time?
“You’re not an easy agent to predict. In fact, the only thing I can safely predict about you is that you’re unpredictable. And that’s dangerous. I’m sorry, but it is.”
He looked like he wanted to continue talking, but he pressed his lips together and stuffed his hands in his pockets. “Did…that answer your question?”
Teri stared both at and through him, her mind tumbling over his words and struggling to process and react to each one. The unsatisfied pressure in her chest told her that overall, he hadn’t answered the question to her satisfaction, but she was so overwhelmed with everything else he had said that it took her several moments to remember what the initial question had been. “Why are you so nice to me?”
He looked at her for a long moment, long enough that she began to wonder if she had even asked the question out loud. He rocked on his heels slightly, and took in a deep breath. “You like Battleship, right?”
What does that have to do with… “Yes?”
“Let’s play.”
Teri crossed her arms and frowned at him. “Spender, quit being evasive.”
“I’m not. Let’s play. You win, I answer your question. I win, I answer your question over lunch tomorrow at the diner.”
This was not the way she wanted things to go, but there was something in the whole idea that made her insides tingle. If he wanted to stretch this out, fine. She could teach him a lesson about being evasive when she kicked his ass at Battleship. “All right. We better get going then, I think curfew’s at eleven.”
“Ten forty-five,” he corrected. Teri glared, and the little impish smile appeared again. “Eleven if you know which doors the monitors check first.”
He had a point.

Nano Nano
I actually managed to add a little more than my daily word count today! Whoo hoo! I’m nearly at the 25k stage. To be honest, I’m a bit shocked I’ve managed to keep my word count up. It usually it takes me forever to write a couple of thousand words of original fiction.
Another chocolate for me, yum!

Hey, Red? It's almost noon. You done executive dysfunctioning yourself out of writing yet? No? Not gonna take advantage of the day off after all?
Oh well. You're only 9,000 words behind on NaNo anyway. You still have a week to catch up.

Nanowrimo - NO!
The last several times I decided to try Nanowrimo, something epically shitty happened in my life right in the last week or October or the first week of November.
2020 being what it has already been so far, and it starting right before the election where hopefully a dictatorship is nipped and several evil assholes lose their jobs, I don’t even want to know what this year would hurl at me.
No matter how many cute Nano journal designs, or plotting, outlining, or any kind of excited posts about doing Nanowrimo I see I will not be tempted.
I WILL NOT BE EVEN THINKING ABOUT TRYING TO DO NANOWRIMO IN 2020!!
You’re welcome world, I can’t even imagine what the universe would throw at me to top off this shitstain of a year - the collateral damage would be too much to the whole rest of the planet. Not worth the risk.
