#nanowrimophotochallenge day 16: writing quote . . . A spread from my notebook of inspiration. The green quote in particular, I like. . #campinstawrimo Day 30: #MondayMotivation: What keeps you motivated? ✑ I would have to say my passion for writing and creating keeps me going. My day job can be quite stressful, so I love coming home with some tea (or wine) and getting lost in my own little world. ✑ When I am struggling with writer’s block or feeling like an imposter, I remind myself why I write. It’s because I LOVE to write. It makes me happy, it’s fun, empowering, a stress reliever (until I find a plot hole and want to throw my computer out of a window) and it gives me the opportunity to be creative and create different worlds, characters, and experiences. For that, I am so grateful. ✑ My goal is to one day become a published author. In order to do that, I have to keep going. ✑ Why do you keep going? • • • #amwriting #amwritingfantasy #bookish #writersofig #igwriters #igwritersclub #writingcommunity #igwriters #writersofinstagram #writersbelike #authorsbelike #iwrite #writer #writing #aspiringauthor #keepwriting #campnanowrimo #campnanowrimo2018 #julynanowrimo #nanowrimo #nanowrimophotochallenge #campinstawrimo #writerslife

#NaNoWriMo Photo Challenge Day Four: Put On Your Thinking Cap - 'I was really struggling with a photo for this one, then whilst writing last night I remembered that the NaNo logo includes an awesome helmet - so much cooler than a thinking cap! So I thought this would be a good chance to tell those who don't know, a bit more about NaNo! - National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to creative writing. On November 1, participants begin working towards the goal of writing a 50,000-word novel by 11:59 PM on November 30. - Valuing enthusiasm, determination, and a deadline, NaNoWriMo is for anyone who has ever thought about writing a novel. - There's still time to sign up on the @nanowrimo website if you're interested/ here's some inspiration: Over 250 NaNoWriMo novels have been traditionally published. They include Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants, Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus, Hugh Howey's Wool, Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl, Jason Hough's The Darwin Elevator, and Marissa Meyer's Cinder.' (You might recognise three of my favourite books in that short list!) - So what are you waiting for? Write your story! - (Idea and most of the text shamelessly pilfered from @serafinajayne) . . #nanowrimo2016 #amwriting #writer #novel #nanowrimophotochallenge #writer

#nanowrimophotochallenge day 15: mid-month check in . . . Not as much as I hoped, better than I expected. I personally aim to write 15,000 words in November because *consultancy reports* and *systems engineering reports* and *dissertations* unfortunately don’t count in my word count. Education first 💪 . It’s ok, my tears will taste great in my coffee 👌 . #catchupDecemberamiright . . . #nanothatwrimo #nanowrimo #nanowrimo2018 #wrimo #amwriting #amwritingscifi #writersofig #amwritinglgbt #writersofinstagram #writerscommunity https://www.instagram.com/p/BqN1nhzDvHS/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=xfy9s4qhr8lu

#nanowrimophotochallenge day 13 . . . My flatmates and friends are my cheerleaders for this NanoWrimo! My main cheerleaders however, is my motivation. #nanowrimophotochallenge day 11: writing tip . . . Build, increase and show that payoff! This is my main advice, mainly for building a compelling plot. Let me explain. (Note: I mainly write character and plot focused sci-fi, fantasy and horror with a mystery/thrill element and high stakes. This is my advice for that.) . . Build: Figure out what you want that emotional payoff(s) to be. Is there a plot twist that is mean to give you a shock? A confrontation or event that will bring a lot of pain or joy? Does the MC's pet bird die on your book? Payoff (and the climax) . . Increase: EVERYTHING in the book before then should be building to one of those payoffs! Have you heard of Chekov's Gun? If not, google it. Every element of your story (plot arcs, character arcs), every detail (description, detail, world building), should ideally tie into a payoff. If it doesn't, it's not necessary. And (in my opinion) it dilutes your writing. Wouldn't you want your readers to hang onto your EVERY WORD? Well, make every word count. The MC had a bad day at school? The bird is there to comfort them. The MC has an argument with their mom? This is showing their arc of growing independence, which will then be fulfilled when the bird, last symbol of their childhood, is tragically lost. Note: don't spoon feed foreshadowing either . . Show: Burn through that accumulated tension! Make your reader feel things. Show the impact of that event/confrontation on the MC's life. (optional step. I never show denouement in short horror stories, because bringing the story to an end at the exact second that payoff explodes just allows the tension and emotion to sit on a high) . . . #nanothatwrimo #nanowrimo #nanowrimo2018 #wrimo #amwriting #amwritingscifi #writersofig #amwritinglgbt #writersofinstagram #writerscommunity #writingtips #writingadvice https://www.instagram.com/p/BqDsmZjDpm_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=wh7g0o4hjhsb

#nanowrimophotochallenge day 7: Where are you writing Wednesday . . . I usually write in my flat, at my desk, in front of my window. #nanowrimophotochallenge day 5: author inspiration . . . I inspire myself by hand drawing out characters, plotting back from a good plot twist, and reading a lot. . Hence, I don't have a single favorite author, and I don't necessarily like everything about the author's books . But here is a list of authors I have recently read (as in, post-high school reading lists mostly), and what I appreciated the most from the books I have read from them: . Adam Silvera: well-crafted stories with the need to keep track of details, importance of hindsight . Brandon Sanderson: epic world-building with consistent internal logic, well-crafted, well-framed plot . CS Pacat: great use of bias narrator perspectives and sustaining tension in dialogue, importance of hindsight . Donna Tartt: character relationships and beautiful writing that peels at the layers of my heart . Gillian Flynn: evocative, accurate writing with great plot twists and unlikeable narrators, great atmosphere . JK Rowling: great worldbuilding and portrayal of character relationships, good philosophical discussion with many morally grey characters . Kiersten White: good use of bias narrator perspectives on actions and relationships, fun plots . Leigh Bardugo: great world-building, heart warming character relationships, beautiful writing, fun plots . Madeline Miller: realistic magical people who retain a very human quality and beautiful writing . NK Jemisin: epic world-building, heart warming imperfect character relationships, unique and well crafted/well-framed plots . Sylvain Neuvel: great morally grey characters, utilitarian sci-fi and internal logic . Stephen King: Great characters, and vivid writing that sustains tension and creates horrifying atmospheres . Taylor Jenkins Reid: heart warming characters and character relationships, beautiful but sparse writing, importance of hindsight . . . #campnanowrimo Day 23: Monday Motivation: Writer’s Block Busters. Some things that have helped me with writer’s block are: ✑ Setting up a writing routine. ✑ Reviewing/updating my outline. ✑ Taking a shower/bath. ✑ Listening to music. Usually songs that evoke emotion for the scene I’m working on. ✑ Keep writing! I try to write everyday even if it’s a blog post or short story. • • • #amwriting #amwritingfantasy #bookish #writersofig #igwriters #igwritersclub #writingcommunity #igwriters #writersofinstagram #writersbelike #authorsbelike #iwrite #writer #writing #aspiringauthor #keepwriting #campnanowrimo #campnanowrimo2018 #julynanowrimo #nanowrimo #nanowrimophotochallenge #campinstawrimo #writerslife #mondaymotivation #writersblock #writersblockbusters
