one of my favourite things about steven universe on a rewatch is how you can see the consequences of the abduction arc spread throughout season 5. it was a horrific, traumatizing even for the whole city and everyone acknowledges that. it starts of this domino effect of changes in beach city. nanefua becoming mayor, dewey working at the big donut, sadie quitting her job and joining a band, peedee opening a food truck, lapis leaving and taking the barn with her, peridot now living with the crystal gems, garnet being unsure of her future vision. even the small things like connie getting a haircut. steven wouldn't have even found out rose was pink diamond if it wasn't for the abduction arc. the fandom really hated the townie episodes but they were important because otherwise we wouldn't care about what happened to beach city. we wouldn't have cared about all the people affected. we wouldn't have seen how close steven was to them and how their abduction affected him. season 5 is basically everyone dealing with the aftermath of that arc. the townie episodes weren't filler like the fandom called them at the time, they were important in establishing the status quo so we could see how it changes after this arc.

Easily my favorite episode so far.

Also some small pearl appreciation real quick

But for real this episode was SO charming. It's just a very basic premise but that's why it's so good. It's a really simple low stakes plot that just let's these characters be themselves. The Pizzas honestly are like the best side characters in the series so far. They are some of my favorites & they've only just been introduced (ok the daughter showed up before but this episode made me like her way more)

I really hope Nanefua shows up again. She's instantly become one of my favorite characters so far. She's wonderful. Please tell me she comes back because I love her very much. In fact I want the Pizzas to come back many times they're so lovable.

Also this episode has been the funniest one so far too. This shit had me laughing hard.

Plus Pearl got to shine & that's always a plus.

Honeslty it's a very barebones simple plot with an obvious basic ass moral but it's the simplicity that makes it better. It's just watching some lovable characters play volleyball & then fighting a big fish. I loved this episode. This has absolutely been my favorite so far. This show has seriously greatly improved its writing from the first couple of episodes comparing it to the last handful of episodes. Anyways almost halfway done with Season 1. Let's go.

it seems like the main points you rate LP characters on are "are they dehumanized", "are they part of their community", "are they written to be three dimensional", and "are their proportions accurate", is that about right? curious/interested in your process for deciding ratings :D also what do you think of Nanefua Pizza from SU? not a major character even as much as Sadie but i always thought she had a fun personality

Hello! Yes, that would be accurate!! And unfortunately a lot of Little characters do not meet these criteria! They're usually only there for comic relief, are greatly dehumanized, and othered by their community.

So for those in the back, when determining whether a Little character is good representation for the dwarfism community, I ask the following:

Do they hold a purpose in the story/plot other than comic relief?

Are they a well rounded character? Do they matter to plot? (It could also be that they are simply for background diverity which can be fine too)

Is their inclusion natural and fluid, or blatant and obvious? If they make a big deal about it, what is the reason? Do they use it as a tool to talk about adversity?

Are they accepted by their community? Or is there obvious seperation/rejection?

Is their anatomy correct? Or are they more gnome-like/vague?

Also I love Nanefua! She is very sweet and strong willed. I wasn't sure to include her since her height could also be due to her "small asian grandma"-ness. But she could certainly be Little!

Much as I love them, The Townies were poorly integrated into the back-half of the show. In the front half it was fairly common for tertiary human characters to get caught up in monster-of-the-week events that had genuine stakes; less common in the back half, despite the whole "Dewey Wins" beat implying that Nanefua was going to try and get the community more proactive involved (which basically only materialized in a more effective evacuation plan when the Diamonds showed up.) I think they just didn't scale well.
