Hali’s Family

Since Hali was in the 5.x patches when this was first written, and she was going to be going back home to Sharlayan soon, it was the perfect time to introduce everyone to Hali’s family!

Because it’s pretty long, the rest is under the cut below! Thank you all very much in advance for reading about Hali’s background and her family!!

Hali Aloke

First of all, let’s get started with Hali herself. Hali Aloke is born the only child to Archon Taito Aloke and Labyrinthos Researcher Lalani Lani. She was actually born, and grew up, in Labyrinthos. Growing up with overprotective parents and surrounded by an artificial environment, Hali soon longed to see the rest of the outside world, just as her grandparents did when they were younger.

When she was older, Hali went up to the surface of Sharlayan and attended the Studium, in which she graduated with honors, and her senior thesis was her theory of combining Sharlayan Astromancy with Ishgardian Astrology. Her parents were not happy with her choice of thesis, but her grandmother believed she was walking in the footsteps of her grandfather, who was an expert Astrologian.

Now, let’s get to Hali’s family members, notably her parents and her maternal grandparents, whom all were some of the biggest influences in Hali’s life.

Hali’s Father: Taito Aloke

Hali’s father is Taito Aloke, aged 50 in ARR and 56 when we get to meet him in EW. He is a Plainsfolk Lalafell whose bloodline dates back to the very founding of Old Sharlayan. Because his ancestors were so proud of their new home and wanting to be known as Sharlayans first and foremost, they dropped the traditional Lalafellin naming conventions and instead took the surname Aloke, an old Thavnairian name which means “Light; Radiance; Enlighten”.

Taito became an Archon in his early twenties and went on to marry Hali’s mother, Lalani, whom he had met during his time writing his Archon’s thesis. Taito rose to become one of Labyrinthos’ top researchers in Meteorology, and he also was elected to the Forum about a decade ago.

Taito has the tendency to be sarcastic and witty, always making some sort of comment about anything and everything. Though he can be overbearing at times, Taito loves his little girl with all his heart, and he had wished that Hali would follow his example and be a Meteorologist as well, but Hali never was interested in pursuing his research.

Taito was devastated when he found out that Hali had left not only his home, but left Sharlayan altogether to go to Eorzea. He used his position on the Forum to try to hunt down his daughter and bring her home, but Hali fought off all of her pursuers. After about two years of trying to capture Hali and bring her back home, Taito and the rest of the Forum decided that Hali instead would be left alone to live her own life, but she could never return to Sharlayan.

Hali’s Mother: Lalani Lani

Hali’s mother is Lalani Lani, aged 48 in ARR and is 54 when we meet her in EW. She is 1/2 Dunesfolk Lalafell and 1/2 Midlander Hyur who was born in Sharlayan to a Hyuran Sharlayan Astrologian father and a Dunesfolk Lalafellin mother from Ul’dah who became a gleaner. Lalani had very loving parents, and they tended to spoil her, as she was an only child and wanted for nothing.

Lalani became obsessed with Botany, and she graduated from the Studium with top honors in the field. She met Taito soon after graduating; they fell in love and soon married about two years later. The newlyweds were never apart from one another for long, and they both became top researchers in Labyrinthos. Lalani herself became one of the Head researchers of Botany in Labyrinthos. The Alokes built their home in Labyrinthos itself and soon had their only daughter there as well.

Lalani doted on her daughter as much as she could and tried to be the best mother she could be, though she did work long hours and she also was overprotective at times. Lalani wasn’t too happy that Hali seemed to want to spend much of her time with her mother and not her or Taito as much, but she didn’t think much of it beyond feeling a bit jealous of her daughter and her mother’s bond. Until one day she came home to find her daughter missing. After searching all of Labyrinthos and Old Sharlayan, Lalani’s mother finally confessed: she knew that Hali had left Sharlayan for Eorzea, and decided to become an adventurer.

Lalani was furious with her mother, and she didn’t speak to her for years. Yet she was determined to get her daughter back, and she pleaded to the Forum for help with getting her daughter back home. But as soon as the Forum was alerted, there were those that were highly concerned that Hali was a trained Astrologian, and that their knowledge would be spread to the outside world. The forum agreed that they would track Hali down, but they would have to bring her back as a criminal. Lalani herself would be elected to the Forum a few years later, and she would use the Forum’s knowledge to make sure her daughter was at least safe, even though Hali would eventually be forbidden to return home to Sharlayan.

Hali’s Maternal Grandmother: Nanani Nani

Hali’s maternal grandmother is Nanani Nani, aged 75 in ARR and is 81 years old when we meet her in EW. Nanani is one of the most important people in Hali’s life, and she along with her late husband were the biggest influences, not only in what Hali decides to study at the Studium, but also why she ends up leaving Sharlayan and becoming an adventurer.

Nanani was actually born in Ul’dah and was from a prominent merchant family. She longed to see the world, and when she met and fell in love with a Hyuran Sharlayan Astrologian named Jovian, Nanani left Ul’dah as soon as possible. The two were wed not too long after Nanani left Ul’dah, and Nanani was able to become a Sharlayan citizen. Nanani went on to get a job as a gleaner, and she traveled all over the world for her job. These stories of her travels were passed down to Hali, who in turn dreamed of seeing the world just as her grandmother did.

Once Hali graduated from the Studium, she had applied to become a gleaner, just as her grandmother was, but she was rejected. She ended up getting a job as a research assistant in Botany, but Hali eventually learned that her own parents had blocked Hali from getting the gleaner’s job, as they were afraid for their daughter’s safety out in the world alone, and so soon after the calamity.

When Hali came to Nanani with this information, and knowing how much Hali wanted to leave Sharlayan, Nanani encouraged her granddaughter to follow her dreams, telling her that she was an adult now, and that she must live her own life. Hali needed a way to sneak out of Sharlayan without her parents knowing, so Nanani talked to an old colleague, a fellow lalafellin gleaner, who helped Hali get out of Sharlayan unnoticed.

Though her daughter and son in law were so furious with her that they refused to talk to her for years afterwards, Nanani does not have any regrets. She knew her granddaughter was not happy with her life in Labyrinthos, and she feels like she did what she had to do to help Hali with finding her independence and happiness.

Hali’s Maternal Grandfather: Jovian Carraway

Hali’s maternal grandfather was Jovian Carraway, a Hyuran Astrologian born and raised in Sharlayan. He passed away two years before ARR, at the age of 83. Along with Nanani, Jovian was one of the most important figures in Hali’s life, with Hali even taking up his same discipline of Sharlayan Astrology and Astromancy.

Jovian was a very accomplished Astrologian, who became an Archon and the Head of the Astromancy Department at the Studium. He was also the mentor of Professor Mace Byrde (from the AST questline). During one of his trips to Eorzea, he met a young lalafellin woman named Nanani Nani and the two fell in love. He asked her to come back with him to Sharlayan, to which she agreed quite enthusiastically.

The two adored their granddaughter Hali, and Jovian began teaching her Astrology from a young age, as soon as they discovered that she was just as fascinated with the heavens as Jovian was. Hali followed in his footsteps, attending the Studium, and soon becoming an Astrologian herself.

Two years prior to the events of ARR, Jovian fell ill and would pass away from the effects of the illness, but not before telling Hali that he saw her future, and that she would one day save the star itself, but only if she left Sharlayan behind. Hali took his words to heart, and it was one of the driving forces for her ultimately deciding to run away and leave Sharlayan to become an adventurer in Eorzea.

Its just talking... Episode 0

(Ok so this post is a little lite I grant you. Its sort of the dirty rough start something like this needs, getting all the exposition out of the way. The goal going forward will be in-depth explorations of Erik’s motives. The action of spy romps and evil seeds can get a bit much so this will be the slower pallet cleanser to frame the other stories and give reasons for actions. I look forward to writing for this and hope you all like it,)

Erik arrived at the office at close to half past tenth bell. He had been ordered to begin seeing this person after his last analysis. His Commander trying to soften the news, “Its just talking Captain.” Despite the reasons for his going he had come to enjoy his weekly hour, despite his feelings at the start.

He was soon showed in to the now familiar room. The sandstone floor and golden brown walls common enough in Ul’dah. The furnishings were in the Oasis style, a soft off-white to play off the walls. The lights were soft and there was a hint of spice to the air. “Hello Erik, if you will take a seat we can begin.” 

It was often hard for non-Lalafell to discern the age of a given Lalafell, Doctor Nani. Nanani Nani was very obviously old. Erik had wondered when they met how many ages she had seen... if she was older then the sands... and a number of other defensive things

Erik half laid on the Oasis couch as she began to prod, “So how was your week?” she began. He tried to relax and over-analyze before remembering that he was not suppose to do that, “It has been good... quiet. We have been catching up on some of our lesser projects. Our emergency decent devices keep over heating and we cant get the turnover time down. I was ordered to look into augmenting the device through a living host, an animal, to extend the effects.” The councilor looked up, “You are doing it again. I highly doubt your superiors specifically ordered you to try animal testing. As I have explained in the past this is a safe place for you Erik. You and or your team realized that your technology would work more efficiently that way and moved to do so. Just because some would find that offensive doesn’t mean you must pass the blame to your chain of command.”

Erik did not make eye contact, He knew the Dunefolk would stop him as he spoke the words automatically. “Erik, let’s look a bit deeper into this.” Erik looked up, “The animal testing?” Doctor Nani shook her head, “No, your need to displace blame on somethings and not others.”

They talked for a time on the topic until, “Wait, we will have to stop here today.” Erik stood up and approached and shook her hand. On his way out of the office he thought deeply on all that had been said.

What does your character look like?:

Tokhta stands at 6 fulms 7 ilms, a comparatively short height next to an average-sized male Au Ra. He is dark skinned with the usual darker Xaela scales. He has burgundy hair with lighter red highlights interspersed throughout, its length falling just below his shoulders, messy but clean. His physique is toned and healthy, but not bulky, like that of a swordsman who has been training for many moons.

Favourite Hobby: Having taken in a recent fascination with Doman culture, he spends many bells practicing their customs and traditions, such as making tea, performing exagurated gestures, and preparing specific meals. Before this he was too unsettled to claim a hobby.

Motto they live by: “You do not 'settle.’ You discover where you are meant to be.”

Favourite type of Environment: Mountainous regions with a dry climate. This is extremely simliar to what he had grown up with in the Steppes, and the closest he has found in Eorzea to this preference is in Thanalan. He lived in La Noscea for several moons, but, although he could not deny the beauty of its landscape and the vast sea to which he resided near, he is most at home in the environment he knows best.

Friends: He has attained a few friends since his arrival in Eorzea a little over one year ago, although the one who has stuck around the most is Nanani Nani. A young Miqo'te girl with a Lalafelin name, he has adopted her as a sister in recent times.

Who They Admire: Tokhta has yet to find or learn of anyone who simply leaves him in awe or inspires him to newfound heights. With an innate tendency to consider everyone as equals, he is sooner to balk at someone of great status than he is to look up to them with reverence.

What they hope to do 10 years from now: He remains yet undecided on his future, having not expected to get as far as he has. His inborn wanderlust will at least guarantee that he will not be in the same place after ten years, and he would not be surprised to find himself back in Othard one day, despite having run away from it in the first place. Despite this, he does hope to keep the same friends he has now, to prove his worth to them and then some.

Are they single? If not, who is their spouse/partner/life mate?: Tokhta is in a committed relationship with the Raen Daisuke Koide, his fiancé. He is a young conjurer raised in a traditional Doman lifestyle, well educated, and the reason for Tokhta's newfound interest in Far Eastern culture.

What do they look for in friends?: He is drawn to honesty and kindness above all. Although he easily befriends most people he meets, a brash or aggressive nature is a sure way to send the Xaela into seeking companionship elsewhere.

If they walked into a bar and saw a talking slug, what would their reaction be?: Tokhta would eye it curiously but otherwise avoid initial contact. He would take a seat somewhere he could keep the creature in view without drawing attention to himself, but ultimately will forget its presence. Unless, of course, it speaks to him first.

Been Arrested: Yes, Hali was arrested for being a fugitive that snuck back into Old Sharlayan after being banished for helping to bring Sharlayan Astromancy to the Eorzeans. She was found sneaking around Labyrinthos in order to discover the secret project that her parents were hiding from the public at large.

HISTORY//

History (Pre-ARR): Hali was born to a loving lalafellin family in Old Sharlayan, and more specifically, her parents are researchers working in Labyrinthos. She lived most of her life stuck in Labyrinthos except for when she went up to the surface to study at the Studium or to relax and eat at the Last Stand. She dreamt of seeing the outside world but her parents would never allow it. One day, Hali’s grandmother Nanani makes an arrangement with an older Lalafellin man who is a gleaner, and he agrees to smuggle Hali out of Sharlayan so that she could be an adventurer and see the world for herself. Drinks: Only drinks wine and certain kinds of cocktails, but tries to only drink when she’s not busy with her Scion duties the next day, as she is a lightweight and gets drunk easily.

Mount Issuance: Hali was never given a chocobo, because she said she didn’t need one! She always used a magical umbrella that allowed her to float above the ground and fly her to wherever she needed to go. Later on, Hali found her pet alligator Boudreaux on her Island Sanctuary and she rides him most of the time now.

Been Arrested: Yes, Hali was arrested for being a fugitive that snuck back into Old Sharlayan after being banished for helping to bring Sharlayan Astromancy to the Eorzeans. She was found sneaking around Labyrinthos in order to discover the secret project that her parents were hiding from the public at large.

CURRENT STATUS//

As of patch 7.1, Hali is currently helping Wuk Lamat, Gulool Ja, and Oblivion as they deal with the situation in Alexandria with the false Sphene. She is going back and forth between staying in an Inn Room in Tuliyollal and a furnished apartment in Solution Nine. Depending upon the specific verse, it’s either Aymeric or Themis accompanying her in Tural.

NOTE: Hali’s story follows all major events of the MSQ as she is a Warrior of Light and her unsundered self was Azem. The major canon diversion is that in her canonverse, there are multiple Warriors of Light (namely my other WoL Yume Aino @firelightmuse and several of my friends’ OCs). As such, Hali might or might not be the main WoL of focus in some arcs of the MSQ, and she might not be involved with some side storylines at all. Feel free to ask me for any specifics in this regard.
