Hola Fairly!! How are you? How was your week? I hope it was great! Now I have two ideas (one for Christmas since my mall started decorating for the holidays even tho it's a month away 😭).
No1. Is Nanami and the reader get invited to a quinceañera (where it's readers niece's big day and wanted them to come). And it's Nanami's first time at such a big party (unlike those office parties) and all of the tias wanted a turn dancing with him as well as the little kids.
And No.2 is almost like my first ask (where teen Kento meets the reader's family and her mother tells Kento that she'll teach him recipes) And since during Christmas it's a family tradition (of mine) to make tamales! (Japanese Christmas is a bit different than others since they really don't do present exchanges) So he helps the reader's mother and then they open presents around midnight with the whole family! (While the little kids dogpile around him showing them their presents to him.)
Introvert Spotted at a Quinces // Nanami Kento x fem!reader
word count: 2.5k
cw: f!reader, latina-coded reader, fluff, ooc(? Nanami, established relationship.
summary: You and Nanami were invited to your niece's quinceañera, which is far from Nanami's usual science. Especially when all of the sudden, people from your family want to dance with him.
a/n: hello erigaur! thank you for calling! I've been good, getting cozy and warm now that the cold weather is here for reals. i cannot believe that your mall started decorating for Christmas on November! i usually save all that for December, which is why i will start on that second idea separately. For now, let's see how nanami does at this quinceañera.
liked this? show it with a like, reblog, and/or comment. each is greatly appreciated and celebrated!
Tumblr media
Nanami loves you, there is not a thing he wouldn't do for you. He’s the kind of husband to get out of his comfort zone for you, to try new things he never thought of trying out. And getting out of his comfort zone he has ever since he started dating you, but nothing like today.
Oh no, today was different. Today wasn’t trying some dish or watching some series that you grew up with. It wasn’t something he could try within the comfort of his own home, in the quiet tranquility of the evening with the two of you alone behind closed doors. Instead, he was sitting by the table in this large venue filled with people he was still getting to know: your family. Meanwhile, you were on the dancefloor with your sister and a huge smile on your face as you danced to one song and got excited for the next one as soon as it started. Being in a party as big as this one, as loud as this one, was definitely something he wasn’t used to. Quinceañeras, or any parties like this for that matter, weren’t his thing.
When you told him about the party a few weeks ago, he noticed how hesitant you were about even going to the first place. Despite how much you loved your niece and wanted to commemorate such an important birthday, you still managed to put up some excuses. It’s gonna end super late, we could just send her a gift and stay home, I don’t even think I have something to wear, and many other silly reasons to not go. Even then, you shrugged your shoulders at your own with your eyes darting away from him, your tone laced with defensiveness. Nanami knew how to read between the lines and hear what you wouldn’t say—you wanted to go but you were putting him first.
It was one thing to go to those office parties he frequented and another to go to a quinceañera. It wasn't like he even liked those parties, it was work. He would show up, chit chat with coworkers about the most superficial things, and return home. But those parties were quiet, nothing too big or too personal. Quinceañeras were the opposite. Loud, filled with your family that he had married into, and bigger than what the word big denoted. Those kinds of parties simply didn’t line up with your quiet and introverted husband, you were worried that they would be too much to handle and make him uncomfortable.
But for you? Nothing was too much to handle, especially a party with your family no matter how much you tried to scare him into staying in his comfort zone. So he insisted on going. It wasn’t just because it would be bad manners to reject an invite without a valid reason, but he would hate to be holding you back from celebrating your niece’s coming of age party. Your family was his now and events like this were something he signed up for the moment he married you. These events were important for you because it meant seeing your family and because he genuinely wanted to engage with your family and be the husband you deserved, one that your family approved of.
This brings him here, looking at you dancing in your pretty dress that he bought you to avoid your excuses of having nothing to wear. You looked so pretty all dolled up, even with how dark the venue was and all the colorful lights shining all over the room, that was easy to appreciate for him. You always looked pretty, but it was events like this when you could really redefine what ‘pretty’ even means. He could just open up a dictionary and see a picture of you right now with that smile as the definition.
The way you were dancing, however, made him hum. You were letting loose, not caring who was looking as long as each song you danced to was better than the last. There were a few times you looked back at him and tilted your head back at him with a smile to invite him to join you, which was met with a wave of his hand as he shook his head. He was happy staying here at the table, guarding your purse as you danced away. Sure, it wasn’t his ideal night to sit alone at a party like this, but he didn’t mind it. You looked too happy for him to even consider pulling you away from this early than what you would’ve wanted.
“Wife left you all alone?”
Nanami turns to his side when a voice barely manages to break through the loud music, his eyes meeting your aunt sitting next to him. Nanami greets them, slightly nodding his head at her.
“She wanted to dance and I am a terrible dancer.” He answered, trying his best to make his voice heard through the music.
“Oh, come on. No one cares about that when they are having fun.” Your aunt laughed at his modesty, which caused Nanami to look back at you and then everyone else on the dance floor. Everyone seemed to just mind themselves.
“You’re right. Maybe I am still getting used to all this.” He chuckles, turning back to face your aunt. It was hard to talk considering how one had to shout if they wanted to keep the conversation going.
“Right, but that doesn’t mean you can’t let loose.” Your aunt suddenly stands up, extending her hand for Nanami to take. “I’m sure one dance can’t hurt, no?”
Nanami was taken back by the invitation to dance, making him a bit apprehensive to the idea. He truly meant it when he said he was a terrible dancer, at least when it came to this kind of music he wasn’t familiar with. However, the way your aunt was patiently waiting for Nanami to accept made him rethink it. It didn’t seem like she would take no for an answer and he did tell himself before coming here that this was his family now. Maybe one dance wouldn’t hurt.
He nods, placing your purse down on your seat and standing up to take your aunt’s hand. “Alright, ma’am. It’s not like we can talk with the music this loud.” He chuckles, trying to ease his uneasiness.
Your aunt laughs once more, agreeing with him once they reach the dance floor. “Maybe we can work on improving your dancing. I’m sure [Name] will appreciate that.”
Nanami nods once more, this time with a soft smile. He wasn’t opposed to the idea of that, after all, how many times has he danced with you in the comfort of your home? His hand on your lower back and yours on his shoulder. Or better yet, you holding his waist close as he holds your cheeks as the two of you sway back and forth. But that was different. That is when the two dance without needing any music, just doing what feels right.
That uneasiness was still present in him as your aunt was trying to show him how to dance to cumbia, to which he was mentally grateful that the genre of the songs changed to something much more tame. He tried his best to follow along, feeling his feet tangle themselves as he tried to follow that triangle step your aunt was so patiently teaching him. He just hoped he wasn’t making a fool of himself in front of your family, seeing how everyone else seemed to move with this flow and smoothness in their steps while he was still looking down at his feet to not trip over himself.
“See? You can dance!” Your aunt noted with a smile, taking his hand and guiding him to spin her around.
It might have been a bit clumsy in his eyes, but he was glad that his stiffness when dancing didn’t take anything away from her fun. Besides, it was nice to stretch his legs after so much time sitting alone on that table, so he kept dancing with your aunt as a way to spend his time in this quinceañera while you had your own fun.
One dance was one dance and your aunt did keep her promise, not wanting to overwhelm him about spending so much time with her, especially when he was kind enough to indulge her in a dance. But as soon as your aunt lets go of him, leaving to take care of things around the party, it seemed like other people had their eye on Nanami. The member of the family that has always been pretty reserved and polite was finally opening up to them even if it was just by dancing. How could they let this chance go to waste?
If it was like those office parties with people trying to strike up a conversation with him, Nanami would’ve found a way to politely cut the conversation short if he wasn’t in the mood to talk much. But it wasn’t like that. Not when different women from your family of all ages were trying to steal a dance with him. Even if he wanted to go back to his seat or sneak away to the bathroom for a few seconds of quietness, he couldn’t bring himself to say no. It wasn’t like he was fond of the idea of dancing so much tonight, but his own words were repeating in his head—this was his family too and he didn’t want you to think he was uncomfortable with them.
From dancing with your aunts and cousins to the small kids dancing close to him, one could easily see how Nanami was letting loose, shaking off his stoic demeanor that made him seem so unapproachable before if it weren’t for the many stories you share of him since you started dating. Instead, he was just making the best of it, taking a couple of notes from how you danced with your sister earlier—as if no one was watching. Even if that wasn’t the case considering how everyone seemed to be taking turns to be his dance partner, it was comforting to just not think much of it.
But of course, there was someone watching. You.
You had gotten away from the dancefloor to check on Nanami and get a sip of a drink, only to find that the table was empty. Thinking he had just gone to the bathroom, you sat down to give your feet a break, gently swaying in your seat to the music.
“I didn’t know Nanami had that in him.” You raised your brow at your sister, not sure as to what she meant by it.
“You know, I always pictured him as the type to just sit around in parties and just sulk around.” Your sister explained, nodding her head towards the dancefloor so you could understand. “Didn’t know you married quite the softie.” She adds with a chuckle.
Confused, you turn to the dance floor. At first, you don’t see anything out of the ordinary, let alone your husband there. That is until you make out his blonde hair, making you crane your head slightly to make him out amongst the crowd. When you finally get a good angle, sure enough, you see Nanami dancing. Even if that was rare on its own, he was slightly hunched over so he could hold the little girl’s hands as they danced, swinging them back and forth to the beat of the music. It wasn’t how you thought Nanami would spend the party.
It was adorable, seeing the wide smile on the little girl’s face as he danced with her. It made your heart flutter at the sight with a soft exhale of your lips. He was fitting in just fine, and there you were when that invite came, all worried about his comfort and trying to skip today. You’re glad you didn’t. You stand up, letting your sister know you had to make it up to him for leaving him on his own while you danced.
As Nanami danced around with the little girl, one of your niece’s, he suddenly felt a tap on his shoulder. Expecting another relative of yours, he meets your smile, making him stand up straight once the little girl lets go of his hands and runs off somewhere else.
“Is this the line to dance with Nanami Kento?” You teased, placing a hand on his shoulder as he turned around to face your body.
He chuckles, quickly placing his hands on the all-too-familiar spots of your waist and free hand. “It is. But you, Mrs. Nanami, get to skip the line.”
“Oh, lucky me, Mr. Nanami?” You giggled, ready to take the lead but surprised when he squeezed you lightly.
“Lucky you indeed, I had some practice.” He smirks, winking at you as he starts to lead. Though bachata was a type of dance he was still learning, he wasn’t holding himself too bad. You did catch him, however, flashing his eyes back and forth between you and his feet, making you giggle at how he was trying to do things just right.
Your hand leaves his shoulder, coming down to his chin and lifting it gently so his eyes meet yours. “Not bad, though you’re still a bit stiff.” You chuckled, teasing him a bit.
He hums, giving in to your lead as your hand goes lower to his back. “Then you’re just gonna have to help me practice.”
“You make it sound as if that is a bad thing.”
“It is when you’re an amazing dancer and I am not.” He says, lifting both of your hands to spin you around and then pull you closer to him, chest meeting chest.
“You’re just being modest. Even my aunts were telling me you were quite the dance partner, sounds like you were having fun without me.”
Nanami shrugs his shoulders. Parties like this were still not his thing. They were too loud to even hold a conversation, ended way too late for his liking, and simply different from how he preferred to spend his time. But he would lie if he said he didn’t enjoy himself at all. Even if he felt silly trying to keep up with your family and these kinds of events, he managed to catch your smile when you turned around to take him to the dancefloor, softening him up. Yes, Nanami is a reserved and quiet person. Parties, let alone quinceañeras, are not his thing. But he was learning to get comfortable with them, he wouldn’t let you have anything less than that.
“I still prefer to have you by my side. You make these events better.” He smiled, pressing his forehead against yours as you two danced. If the two of you were alone rather than at your niece’s quinceañera, trust that he would’ve already kissed you. However, he still had to maintain his image as a gentleman before your family.
“Does that mean you’re gonna join me when they play No Rompas Mas and Payaso del Rodeo?”
“Don’t push it, love.”

The meet-cute: Tiana x Nanami
Heyyy guys so this is the Tanami fic LMFAOOO. Uhhh this fic was written for a close friend that loves jjk. Gab on top fr!!! I don't know much about jjk but I will try my best!! I hope you guys like it!!
Tiana spent most, if not all, of her days working at Duke's Cafe. It was all to achieve her and her dad's dream, to buy that old sugar mill and make a restaurant. Tiana was well known across the city for her 'man catching' beignets, as Charlotte puts it. So well known, in fact, that she even started getting customers from outside New Orleans.
That includes Nanami, who adores sweets. He heard about a specific little cafe that sells amazing beignets, from a coworker who went on vacation.
What even is a beignet? New Orleans sounds like a nice trip, though.... Nanami thought to himself.
Unfortunately for Nanami, he unknowingly made the trip during Mardi Gras.
The bustling streets, bright colors, cars and floats and train cars passing through large crowds of partying people in the humid southern city was definitely not what Kento Nanami was prepared for.
Tiana is working hard on a Mardi Gras noon in Duke’s Cafe. She’s mainly focused on her work and juggling her tables’ orders when she notices a tall blonde man walk in and take off his glasses, waiting to be sat.
“Just sit anywhere and I’ll be right there with you, sir!” Tiana calls out as she carries a mountain of plates on her.
Suddenly Charlotte squeals and bursts into the soft atmosphere with sparkling excitement, clutching a newspaper and bouncing into a booth. Mr. LaBouff cheerily greets Tiana and sits down across from his estatic daughter.
"Tia! Tia! You'll never believe it!-" Charlotte starts with her excited rambling. Tiana listens as she walks toward the table Nanami is sitting at, serving him some coffee.
Nanami looks at his cup of coffee and the beautiful woman who served him, flowing through her work unbothered by the noise around her. She didn’t actually take his order, but he was going to ask for coffee anyway. Additionally, Nanami saw that the (mostly) graceful waitress was already working hard and decided not to make a problem of it.
Eventually Tiana did get to Nanami's table to take his order. Nanami didn't mind the wait, enjoying the atmosphere of the homey and friendly cafe.
"I'm so sorry sir, did you want to order anything?" Tiana hugged her notepad close to her apron, worried and intimidated by the stoic man.
Nanami notices Tiana's nervousness and puts on a soft smile to ease her stress, "I'll have an order of beignets, I heard they're very famous."
The pretty brown-skinned waitress smiled back at Nanami, causing him to blush just a little.
"They sure are. I'll make sure to get them to you right quick, sir!" Tiana's worries of a rude customer washed away.
My god this man is fiiine... Tiana thought to herself while striding away to tend to her other customers, a smirk coming across her face once she was out of Nanami's sight. This customer had a chiseled face and a stoic expression, making him look like a hot actor Tiana can't exactly put a name on. Nanami’s suit and sophisticated, tiny glasses made him look very elegant compared to the other customers in casual clothes; with the exception of Miss pink over there… (Charlotte)
Nanami's eyes follow Tiana as she talks to Charlotte, admiring the working girl. Tiana laughs for a moment after trading a few quick jokes with her, then goes off to serve other tables. Once the pretty waitress is done with that, Nanami sees Tiana walk over to the bakery section of the counter.
Tiana is in a flow now, taking out the warm, fluffy beignets that were in a warmer out onto the counter. Then she gets her two final ingredients. She swoops the honey onto the beignets as if she was waving a magic wand, then spins the whole tray and dances a little while topping the beignets with powdered sugar. Boom. Done. Tiana smirks while looking at her creation that smells so good.
Nanami watched all of this from his table, seeing how other customers are also looking at the beignets with anticipation.
She is really beautiful…. Nanami throught to himself as he tried to peel his eyes away from her in vain. A few of her tight black curls have fallen out of her messy ponytail, the collar of her dress was uneven and disheveled, and her dark brown skin glistened with a light sweat she was putting up; nonetheless, it’s undeniable how beautiful Tiana is. Nanami hides his expression—he hides it well—and looks at his newspaper to distract himself, but before he knew it, he was served his beignets! Unfortunately, Tiana was busy and a bus boy helped her out, so Nanami couldn’t speak to her again.
Nanami smiles with contentment as he takes a sip of his coffee before trying the beignets for the first time. He overheard the pink, princess-like lady growl about how the beignets were ‘man catching’, and he snickers a little.
If they do draw men in…I’m in for a long ride.. Nanami thinks to himself as he takes the first bite. His stoicness prevents him from making any real reaction, but in his head he is dancing, singing Wonder Girls, moaning, and in utter bliss over the amazing and fluffy taste of the beignets. Before he knows it one of the beignets were already eaten by him.
Fuck…I’m in love.. Nanami sighs and looks at Tiana, the woman who made these beignets. He even starts to drool a little before shaking his head to catch his composure.
After Tiana's shift Nanami decides to be bold and approach her. Tiana takes off her work apron and rubs her temples as she sees the blond hunk that she served start to approach her, getting a little anxious and giddy at the same time.
Oh my god he's tall, what does he want? Is he mad? Is he happy? Oh my god he's actually approaching me...hey sexy, my god.. Tiana's mind raced and geeked, like any girl would.
"..May I help you with something, sir?" Tiana asked while taking in the sight of the tall man.
Nanami builds up his confidence in his head and takes off his glasses, looking Tiana in the eye. "Excuse me, miss, but are you single?"
Tiana's lips curl into a smile, her dark complexion develops a pink blush across her face, and she tucks in a loose curl behind her ear. She looks up at Nanami before she answers his question.

Every time Tiana grew near, Nanami felt strange.
No, it wasn’t the presence of bashfulness usually found in juvenile couples, they had been married for five years now, and dated in highschool. There was nothing to be shy about.
And no, it wasn’t an intense desire that lurked in more sentimental moods, not even with Tiana’s lingering finger tips ghosting over his warm body in the cool of the night.
That’s what made the feeling even stranger.
It was dark.
It was plain odd.
Nanami had a very keen sense of discernment when it came to the beings beyond; he had retired from a life of sorcery 3 years ago, but to Tiana he had simply retired early from a day job as a regular salaryman. He couldn’t divulge her into such dangers, being together was already a risk in itself. Not to mention, Tiana was very superstitious and had a certain level of discernment of her own. While she called them “loa”, Nanami knew them as cursed spirits. Some may call them demons, ghosts, phantoms, the paranormal; they were all very similar by how they interacted with the physical realm.
And that was usually by causing some sort of mischief and a sense of despair.
An influx of cursed spirits had begun to infiltrate their home, hiding in dark corners or shaded areas, skirting around the borders and slithering under their floorboards. It would wake Tiana up at night in a frenzy, and while the spiritual cleansing she did with her sage and incense helped, it didn’t permanently rid themselves of the problem. So Nanami, who didn’t even break his exorcism streak to help the daunted citizens on the streets of New Orleans, found himself back on the clock around the clock. When he decided to move here with Tiana, he knew he was bound to run into those fleshless beings because of the south’s rich history, he just never expected them to run amuck in his own home.
Especially to this extent.
They were drawn to Tiana like flies to honey, and even Nanami found shivers running down his spine when Tiana would drift by, a disfigured blob resting at the base of her neck, or clamped around her ankles as she dragged her feet. Slung around her lower back like a poorly adjusted bookbag. Tiana blamed her ailments on the child growing in her stomach, which is partially true. But the other half was due to beings she couldn’t properly see.
To her, they were strange shadows flitting across her vision in the night with hallowed faces and glowing eyes.
“Nanami…” Tiana rasped, clutching her chest as she sat bone straight in bed, her other hand bruising Nanami’s forearm with an agonizing grip. “I don’t think I can put up with this any longer. I can’t keep seeing these…things!”
“Sweetheart…” Nanami’s mouth tingled with a habitual lie. “I don’t see what you’re seeing. I think you’re still drowsy.”
“So you’re telling me,” Tiana’s voice dipped, “That you didn’t see that spindly thing creeping in the corner before you turned on the lamp?”
“Tia, I can’t say that I have.” Nanami tried to reassure her, but she shook her head aggressively, her bonnet threatening to slide off.
“Ken, I swear to you, something was just standing there. It-” She hesitated, her eyes darting frantically. “It was trying to talk to me.”
Nanami frowned. “Talk to you?”
“Ken, I swear I’m not crazy-” She gripped him even harder.
“Hey, I know, I know.” Nanami spoke quietly.
“You’ve gotta believe me.” She sounded so desperate, so of course Nanami stood in her corner.
“I-I do.” Nanami swallowed, his eyes darting to the vacant corner. If those cursed spirits were trying to communicate with her, it could become disastrous. “What…what was it saying?”
Tiana winced, holding her head, a strange jolt rolling through her skull. “I…I don’t know. But it sounded like…that thing in my dream.”
“Are you sure you’re not still dreaming?” Nanami caressed her face in an attempt to lighten the mood, but Tiana didn’t swoon not once. Her face felt cold, and her expression was tight.
“Nanami, I am being serious.”
“Okay, okay. I’m sorry.”
Tiana pulled away from his palms, tucking her knees in. “These dark figures keep talking to me, it’s some sort of gibberish, but I can still somehow understand what they are saying. And there’s one voice louder than the rest, chanting over and over. It’s…it’s freaking me out.”
Nanami’s lips twitched as he tried to keep his expression deadpanned. “What's it saying?”
Something aberrant washes over Tiana’s face, her eyes catching the light of the tungsten bulbs as they glowed like doused embers. Her voice comes out as a low rasp from the crevices of her throat.
“˙ʇɐǝ”
Nanami’s breathing stills, the degrees around them dipping so much that it caused the hair on his arms to stand on end.
“Excuse me?”
A loud thump echoes from their closet, both of them whipping around to stare at the cracked folding doors, a vertical void of black staring back at them.
“The closet…” Tiana’s voice returns to a soft whisper, and Nanami feels the muscles in his neck twitch. “Go…”
She didn’t finish her sentence, but Nanami knew she wanted him to check out whatever was prowling between their clothes. But at the same time, Nanami didn’t want to turn his back to Tiana right now.
Nanami had never really feared cursed spirits, because fearing them would mean fearing reality. Those beings were his reality, so it would be nonsensical to be alarmed by them when it was something he couldn’t always control; like fearing the possibility of being struck by lightning.
So why did he feel such unease from his own wife?
But Nanami, being the obedient husband that he was, sidestepped to the closet, careful to keep Tiana in his peripheral vision as well. As he crept closer, he felt it; the funk of the unrested. Tendrils of darkness billowed from the thin sliver between the two doors. Its presence throbbed, causing Nanami to stall momentarily. It mirrored the same aura surrounding Tiana, their shadows almost synchronizing.
Whatever was in here had to be the catalyst of Tiana’s current worries. It must be attempting to latch onto her.
Nanami’s palms began to dampen as he reached for the wooden knob, a strange rumble rolling through the room. Nanami felt the vibrations in the souls of his feet, and Tiana shivered in fear.
“It’s there…” She whispered through trembling lips, the color lost to them.
Nanami places his hand on the knob, his other arm slightly guarding his body, palm flattened and ready to slice like an ironed blade, having retired his old cursed tool to the depths of the attic.
He dragged the door open with a slow creak, the sound lacerating the inside of his ears as the rhythm of his heart began to quicken.
It was only a peak, but he saw it.
It burst from the closet, wood splintering past Nanami’s arms as he shielded his face, an ear splitting scream erupting from Tiana as raw as an open wound. There were a series of rapid footsteps and the crash of glass from their bedroom window.
Nanami lowered his slightly scratched arms, whipping to see Tiana clutching her chest, heaving heavily as she burrowed into their bedding, sobs revving in the back of her throat. The glass twinkled in the moonlight like falling stars, constellations decorating their dark wooden floor as a soft breeze allowed the curtains to ghost through the air.
Nanami did his best to calm Tiana down, setting her up in the guest bedroom so that he could repair the window as best he could, but she would not settle at all. Her skin paled from its usual golden glow, and her hands fidgeted with his in an attempt to get him to stay.
“Just cover it with a sheet or something.” Tiana begged. “Just don’t leave me.”
“I can’t leave my mother-in-law’s house like that.” Nanami attempted to joke. “I can’t leave our house like that.”
“I wouldn’t be surprised if that was Ma…” Tiana’s teeth chattered. Eudora was a bit difficult to please in life, so of course her soul would be bitter in death. Tiana was sure her mother had come back to haunt her for not having a grandbaby while she was alive.
“Can’t be.” Nanami says factually. He had seen Eudora’s spirit before, a soft blue mist smiling upon their union before ascending to the beyond.
But of course Tiana couldn’t see these beings as clearly as he could, so she gave him a sickly expression; unamused and overturned.
“Then what was that, Nanami.”
“Maybe an animal-”
“That was not a damn animal.” Tiana gritted. “That thing…that thing, I can’t explain it, but maybe it’s something that can’t be explained. I don’t know.”
“But I do know that I can’t stay here- we cannot stay here and raise a child like this.” Tiana’s spirit seemed to shrivel. “Maybe we should-”
“No.” Nanami flat out disagreed. “We can’t, we said we wouldn’t.”
“Nanami, just think for a second.” Tiana placed her hands on his chest, the vibration of his heart calming her. “Our safety takes priority, not a plot of land.”
“You really want to give all this-” Nanami motioned his arms around, “all this up just because of a little scare?”
“Nanami, that was more than a little damn ‘scare’…”
“You want to give up the beautiful views of the southern valleys…” Nanami’s voice cradled Tiana’s soul like a familiar hymn. “Our white picket fence, and beautiful garden. The idea of passing this home to rascals of our own…” Nanami used his two fingers to walk across Tiana’s belly and she giggled, the sensation tickling her.
“A pretty little house in the countryside where it’s nice and quiet, fireflies lighting the way back home. An even prettier lady.” Nanami brushes his pointer finger under her chin, and Tiana feels warm inside. “Who’d want to give up a view like this?”
“They’ve been hounding us down to buy our home for what?” Nanami’s eyes brightened as he voiced a future that seemed to become a bedtime story to Tiana’s ears. “To…lay down some rickety rails and create a shortcut from the east to the west? At the cost of our beautiful home? I don’t think so.”
“Well I know…” Tiana gently cut him off. “If I get that bad feeling again, I will sell the land in a heartbeat. Let the train-goers deal with ghosts, not us.”
Nanami kissed Tiana’s forehead, hugging her close. The scent of the wicked had dissipated, leaving a scent of cocoa butter and lavender. “That’s fair.”
As the sun sat in the middle of the sky, Nanami worked on replacing the busted glass panes as Tiana exfoliated her knees in the dark soil, toiling at the beds of flowers sprouting from the earth. The roses were in full bloom, their petals a bright red like a fresh gash, Tiana doing her best to avoid their sharpened stems. As she pruned the bush, discarding wilted petals and blackened leaves, she noticed a rose that stood out from the rest. Its petals were jet black, like a hole eating away at the green brush. Its stem was like lightning, zigging and zagging through the other roses like a bolt of electricity. Tiana frowned.
As more and more days passed, the eerie feeling didn’t go away, and Tiana avoided sleep to dodge the being behind her eyelids that kept trying to communicate with her. She tried her best to keep the queasy feeling in her stomach at bay, trying her damndest to focus on work. But the stench of sin followed her to Tiana’s Palace, along with a string of abnormal deaths.
Victims were found dismembered in horrific ways, their insides strung across the crime scene as if the culprit were using their bowels as confetti, but strangely their bodies were drained of blood despite the mess made. And every night, the victims popped up closer and closer to her restaurant, her stomach lurching with each body found in the dark alleys of the street.
“You’re on the way, right?” Tiana worriedly asked Nanami through the phone for the third night in a row, asking him to pick her up so she wouldn’t have to commute home alone. “The last person just left, I’m about to lock up.”
“Yes, love, I am right around the corner.” Nanami spoke gently, his footsteps echoing on the pavement, the streets of New Orleans bare as the sounds of lonely souls whistled in the wind, looking for something to hold onto. Cursed energy encased Nanami like a blue flame, whirling around to ward off the evil beings threatening him from the dark. They were minor spirits; Nanami could easily stomp them out like cigarette buds. But they didn’t dare attack him, so he returned the sentiment.
“How was work today?” Nanami asked, switching the subject to ease Tiana’s mind, but that’s not the only thing he wanted to ask her pertaining to the business. But now wasn’t the time.
Tiana sighed deeply, and Nanami knew her pretty face was scrunched in distaste, he could see it so clearly.
“Business has been plummeting for the past few days because of the strange crimes around the area.” Tiana was clearly more than disappointed about the lack of patrons. From morn’ til’ night, there was always a full house, customers resorting to reservations because walking in was impossible. Now, there were barely any tables to clean, even her regulars voiced their avoidance of the area until the murderer was caught.
Nanami frowned. He knew Tiana had been working her whole life to finally have a restaurant to call her own. If she was upset about something, naturally he would share that pain. He just didn’t want her to give up on her dreams.
Nanami turns the corner, the restaurant in his line of sight as he speaks into the phone.
“You’re not thinking of-”
Nanami stiffened, a familiar sensation washing over him.
The feeling he found lying dormant in his own home.
Why was this same presence on the opposite side of town?
Nanami turned to the dark alley perpendicular to him, swallowing thickly as he heard squelches echo in the night, followed by what sounded like grinding stones in such a filthy manner that it made even Nanami’s stomach churn.
While Nanami was used to seeing tragedies, that didn’t make the spectacle he saw anyless mortifying. Whatever it was, it was shrouded in darkness with eyes that glowed like pyrite, mauling the arm of the innocent.
“I’ll call you back.” Nanami said, hanging up in the middle of Tiana’s protest.
Nanami stood on the dark pavement, watching life leave the poor woman’s eyes, her skin pastel in the light. She wheezed past chapped lips stained with red as she mouthed pleas to a God that wouldn’t be coming to her aid, for she had already been claimed by the damned.
Her dulling eyes flitted to Nanami, every so often going out of focus as the demon whittle the flesh off the bone, the sounds of hungry bites and something like a drain being unclogged.
“H-He…help…m-me…”
Nanami frowned. There was nothing to help. If he called an ambulance or even the police, they wouldn’t be able to stitch the gash in her body as her blood was lapped up. They probably wouldn’t make it in time, and if they did, she would live the rest of her mortal life suffering. Also, as coldhearted as it was, it was none of his business.
Tiana’s safety was his business. And if the demon had to preoccupy itself on another innocent bystander to keep his wife from harm, then he would sacrifice the world easily. As long as Tiana wasn’t being preyed on, he didn’t mind someone else being brought harm.
This is why he couldn’t continue his life of sorcery. She would always come first, no matter what.
And this is why he could never tell her about this life. He wouldn’t be able to bear her disappointment if he told her how selfish he was when it came to other’s lives weighted against her own.
So Nanami turned sharply on his heels, cracked sobs dwindling as he walked down the street, turning a blind eye.
Tiana gave him a long hug when he arrived, clutching his back as she let out a weighted sigh. After locking the building down, they strolled down the street, Nanami steering them away from the crime scene.
“Don’t hang up on me so suddenly.” Tiana said, tucking her face into her jacket. “You scared me.”
“I’m in one piece.” Nanami said, and Tiana scowled.
“I know, but still…”
The two walk in silence, their feet scuffling the ground, stray pebbles being kicked out of their wake. Suddenly, Tiana speaks of the troubles laying dormant in her heart.
“Nanami, I think I’m going to-”
“Sell the restaurant?” Nanami gave a sad smile. Tiana’s breath got caught in her throat.
“H-How did you…?”
“I saw the paperwork in the guestroom underneath the pillow.” Nanami brushed his hand through his hair. “Not the best hiding spot.”
Tiana sighs, rubbing her face. “Things are just getting too weird, Nanami.”
“I get that, but…” Nanami paused. “Do you really want to give this life up?”
“I don’t see it as giving up.” Tiana says. “It’s just starting over, starting fresh. Resetting.” She grabs his arm as they continue to walk. “We can move to someplace more urban, maybe bless the upper states with our southern taste?”
“We’d have to lose our garden.” Nanami chuckles.
“I’m willing to risk that. I just…” Tiana fidgets with his sleeve. “I just don’t want to lose you. Or you lose me.”
Nanami raises a brow. “Why would I lose you?”
“Ken, I feel it.” Tiana swallowed. “Whatever this thing is, it’s coming. And I feel like it’s coming for me.”
“Why is that?” Nanami felt something sticky in his spine.
“I can’t explain it, but it’s getting closer. I just…I just know it.”
Nanami tightened his hold on Tiana. Nanami was positive this “thing” wasn’t out for her specifically, he was sure her perception had somehow strengthened because of the proximity to these cursed spirits lately. He sense of danger heightened because she was expecting soon as well. But he wasn’t going to put her worries on the backburner because of a perception. If she was worried, then he’d have to rid her of that worry. He would have to be on high alert so she wouldn't need to be.
“Nothing is going to happen to you.” Nanami says with determination. “That I promise you.”
Nanami was guarded from dusk until dawn, taking extra precautions to survey the house and even did a few cleansing rituals Tiana had shown him to bring back a sense of comfort to the home. While Tiana slept, Nanami found himself praying, and Lord knows he wasn’t the religious type. Anything to ease Tiana’s mind and to keep her safe; even if it meant sullying his knees for a few hours a day. He took time to commute Tiana to and from work, Tiana agreeing to close earlier so they wouldn’t have to travel in the cusp of the night. One night, Tiana slid into the passenger side, saw Nanami’s baggy eyes, and wiped at them as she wished she could swipe them off. He was going through all this for her safety. Doing all this so she wouldn’t have to alter her lifelong dreams.
“You should sleep tonight.” Tiana held his face. “You’re going to push yourself too hard for my sake.”
Nanami kissed her palm, muttering softly as his eyes fluttered closed for a moment. “I can never do too much for you.”
Nanami didn’t sleep that night, but it caught up to him the next day because he overslept terribly long. He had planned to rest his eyes, just a few long blinks around noon is all, but it turned into a deep slumber. Instead of his usually obnoxious alarm waking him up, it was the sound of his front door blowing wide open.
“Wha-?” Nanami groaned, jolting awake in his bed, groggily looking around. It was dark outside, the sun setting hours ago. Suddenly, his memory was jogged, Tiana’s mesmerizing face popping into his mind and bringing him from his dreamlike state.
“Shit.” He muttered, jumping out of bed. Tiana must have come home on her own, undoubtedly pissed and ready to tear him a new one. He quickly rubbed the sleep from his eyes, stumbling to his bedroom door which was cracked open and waving slightly in the dark.
“Tiana?” He groggily shouted, his volume much louder than intended. “I’m sorry, I overslept.” He took another step towards the door. “You were right-?”
His hand hovered over the cold door knob with hesitation.
That thing was there, behind the door.
He could feel it.
Nanami’s nostrils flared, his arm braced in front of him like a sword ready to strike. The shadows around him shifted, his sense of balance tilting as he swung the door open quickly.
Tiana lets out a deafening shriek, the fearsome face of her husband scaring her half to death. She had never seen his face so threatening, and for the first time in his presence she actually felt as if she were in danger. She felt that she was half a second away from losing her life, even though he held nothing that seemed to be a weapon, just his bare palm ready to strike.
“Sh-Shit, Nanami!” Tiana shrieked, clutching herself as she doubled over. “Shit, shit, shit!”
“I’m sorry, you-” Nanami reached out for her, but she pulled away aggressively. “You startled me.”
“God, fucking- ugh!” Tiana brushed past him with more force than he expected, a strange gruffness tickling the back of her throat. “Just…go away!”
She marched into their shared bathroom, Nanami spinning on his heels, apologies spewing from his mouth.
“Tiana, I’m really sorry for-”
Slam!
Tiana slams the door in his face, the windows rattling behind their curtains. Nanami cringes back. He waits for a moment, before lightly knocking on the door. The only thing that responds is the sound of running water from the showerhead.
Nanami sighs, tapping his forehead to the door. He swore he felt that presence on the other side of the door, he’d bet his life on it. His instincts have never steered him wrong before.
So what the hell was that?
Nanami walked back to the bedroom door, examining every crack and crevice. Inspecting the hinges and the framework, trying to see if something had laced itself into the wood. He crouched to the floorboards, noticing something dark had dripped onto the floor. His eyes scanned back, the trail coming from the front door, which was still swinging open in the dark, nothing but thick trees with wide branches waving back at him.
Nanami crept to the door, his bare feet sweating as he followed the dark droplets, their viscosity varying. When he finally got to the door, the wind howled, a harsh breeze blowing into his home.
And carried along the wind was the heavy scent of blood.
Nanami mopped the floors quickly, lips downturned and his brows pressed together. Something wasn’t right, and it disturbed Nanami to his core. Had Tiana hurt herself on the way here? Had something followed Tiana home? He just couldn’t figure it out. And while he meant to apologize for his incompetence as a husband, he ended up interrogating her instead.
“Are you okay?” Nanami asked the heap underneath their bedroom blanket. There was the slightest shuffle as Tiana tucked more of the computer into her body.
“Nanami, not right now.” Her voice was scratchy.
“Did something happen on the way here?” Nanami pressed, to which he got no response. “I really am sorry-”
“Nanami.” Her voice pierced him, and he snapped his mouth shut. “I’m really not in the mood right now. Can you just…go away? Please?”
Nanami fornwed even deeper. Tiana rarely ever got like this; she was so easy to crack. Even now, there was so much yearning in her voice. So why was she so hellbent on pushing him away? Was she really that pissed at him? While she had the right to be, Nanami would rather her start yelling or berating him than completely exclude him.
He slept in the guest room that night.
Tiana didn’t come out of her room the next day, telling Nanami behind the closed door that she’s taking some time off.
“I don’t feel well.” She said, and who was Nanami to correct her?
“Do you need anything?” Nanami asked. She declined quickly.
Tiana was the type to suffer alone, and Nanami would be lying if he said they didn’t mirror each other perfectly when it came to that stubborn philosophy. Because of this stubbornness, Tiana and Nanami both knew the other would knot themselves bending over backwards for the other person, even if they declined.
So Nanami made her some southern style grits for breakfast, bringing the tray to their bedroom. But when he tried to open the door, it was locked. He twisted it a few times to be sure, and Tiana’s muffled voice sounded behind the door.
“Just leave it.”
Nanami grimaced, but obeyed her instructions. But as time passed, he didn’t hear the door open or shut, not even once.
For lunch, he made her a light broth with shredded vegetables that was sure to increase her vigor, and brought it to the door to see her breakfast sitting cold and lumpy in its bowl. Nanami picked up the grits, replacing it with the broth and knocked on the door.
“If you’re still upset with me, I understand.” Nanami stated.
“No, no, I’m not.” Tiana stammered, and it made her words sound like a lie. “I just…don’t have an appetite right now.”
“I know you feel bad, but you should at least eat something to settle your stomach.” Nanami paused, placing his palm on the door. “Let me take care of you.”
“I know, I just…” There’s a pause. “Can’t.”
“Let me at least see you…” Nanami said. He couldn’t seem to get rid of that feeling.
“Oh no.” Tiana panicked. “No, no, no, you do not want to see me right now.”
“Tiana, there’s nothing about you that I haven’t already seen.” His voice was sly, but Tiana didn’t budge.
“Kento, not right now.”
A shiver runs down Nanami’s spine. Tiana only called him by his real name when she was extremely upset, which was so rare that his name sounded fictitious coming from her mouth. But the way she said it wasn’t even in anger; the sentence was voiced in a calm manner but had a lot of bite. It made Nanami extremely nervous.
For dinner, Nanami used the leftover broth from the fridge. He knocked on the door, but there was no response this time.
“Tia, I know my cooking isn’t as good but you should still eat.” He joked.
The silence laughed at him.
“You haven’t eaten all day. It can’t be good for you, or…our child.”
Nothing. Not even the creak of bed springs to signal movement.
Nanami pressed his forehead on the door.
“I know you’re upset with me but please…” Nanami found himself begging at what felt like death’s door. “At least let me hear your voice.”
She didn’t respond.
Nanami sighed, making his way back to the kitchen. He poured the food into a container, sealed it tight with a lid, and placed it in the fridge. He knows she can eat on her own time, but dammit, she shouldn't go on a food strike if she was this upset. Her health was of utmost importance and she had to take care of herself, especially now.
Later that night, while Nanami was patrolling the outside of his house, cleansing the air with sage and striking down the minor spirits lurking about, he swore he smelled it. The metallic scent of blood, just beyond the treeline. The shadows on the trees seemed to grow and shift in the night, weird shapes and figures dancing in the dark. He was about to check it out, the crushed energy around him spiking as it shielded his flesh, when the slam of his bedroom window caused him to jolt.
He looked back to see Tiana’s silhouette fiddling with the locks, then her shadow stood there, surveying Nanami. He’d be lying if he said the feeling that washed over him wasn’t an eerie one. Even when he turned his back to her, he could feel her brown eyes watching him.
Something was odd.
“She must have fallen asleep with the window open.” He muttered aloud. It was comforting to hear a familiar voice, even if it was just his own. And it was a bit cold outside, which he used to explain away the chatter of his teeth.
The next day it was the same routine, Nanami making food and Tiana refusing to eat, despite the loud growls and cries from her stomach behind the door, which rang alarms in Nanami’s head.
“If you’re so hungry, then you should come out and eat.” Nanami pressed, his worry growing by the second. Tiana would suck her teeth in response.
In the middle of the night, Nanami suddenly awoke, a strange feeling washing over his spirit. He heard the window from their bedroom slide, but it didn’t sound as if it were snapping shut.
Why would Tiana be opening the window at-
Nanami looked at the digital clock on the nightstand.
At 12 o’clock in the morning?
Nanami crept out of the guest bedroom, slinking down the hall. It stretched and curved, and each step he took to their bedroom door didn’t seem to make his distance shorter, the wood elongating like a twisted maze. He felt sick.
“Tiana?”
Nanami's voice was a wisp in the night, finally making it to their tall wooden door. It seemed to stretch into the heavens. Was this a dream?
He felt dizzy.
Nanami knocked on the door, the sound echoing through the lonely house. He twisted the knob, but it was still locked.
“T?”
The wind howled back at him.
He had to get out of the house.
Nanami scampered out the front door, heart rattling in his chest. His breath felt weighted, almost sluggish as it dragged through his lungs. The dark tree towered over him, curving into the atmosphere like an upside down bowl. He had to be seeing things.
This must be some type of nightmare. That would explain this overwhelming fear.
But there was something familiar about this presence. This feeling of inherent evil.
Nanami turned the corner of their house, past their tangling garden, and to their bedroom window. It was wide open, white curtain blowing erratically in the dark like a lost soul. He pushed the curtain back inside, parting them to look inside the house.
Tiana wasn’t there.
Like a thief in the night, Nanami crawled through their window, awkwardly landing on the floor with a solid thud. He slammed the window shut, breath ragged. He unlocked their bedroom door, then climbed into their shared comforter like a child hiding from phantoms.
Something was different. Even the scent of their sheets was different. It wasn’t the usual soft smell of cocoa butter or oils, or the vanilla candles she loved to use.
There was a stench of death wafting in this room. All Nanami could do was cling to a pillow as he mourned.
Nanami couldn’t sleep, he lay awake as he waited for his wife to return. He knew it was her rattling at the window, soft swears exiting her lips. He heard her nervous footsteps pace outside, then the specific jingle of her heavy keys unlocked the front door. Nanami didn’t even have the courage to sit up, nor the energy. He suddenly felt so heavy.
Their bedroom door swung open, and Nanami felt nauseous. He didn’t want to face the horrifying truth, so he just tucked the comforter around him tighter.
“Where have you been?” His voice shook.
“Out.” The voice tore through him. It sounded like Tiana, but it didn’t feel like Tiana. Her soul was soft, and she would quite literally have a golden ring around her at times like a saint descending from heaven. But this thing talking to him now seemed to make the already dark room look like a void. Nanami couldn’t even see his own hands in front of his eyes.
“Out where?”
“Just out.”
“You don’t want to elaborate.”
“God, Kento, get off my back.” She snapped, and Nanami cringed. But he couldn’t look her in the face. He was scared of what he might see, and what he may have to do.
“I’m just worried about you.” His voice broke as he balled his fist up. “You know I care about you.”
“If you really care, you’ll leave me the hell alone!”
The door slammed, and her footsteps receded to the other bedroom, the pressure on his body lifting. Nanami let out a strangled breath. That wasn’t Tiana.
Nanami stayed holed up in his room on the third day, trying to come up with some sort of plan. The sun was shrouded with dark clouds, and outside it looked like nighttime.
Nanami was sure the thing pretending to be his wife wasn’t her at all. The strange presence alone and the shifting of his surroundings at night was enough to prove that. It was some sort of cursed spirit, awakening and growing with each night, maybe learning how to expand its domain. But why in Nanami’s home? Why his wife?
Nanami was able to pinpoint the familiarity of said spirit, it was the same as the one he saw in the dark alley. Tiana was right, something really was coming after them. Nanami should have taken care of the cursed spirit when he first saw it. It was irresponsible for him to let it run wild. His selfishness came back to bite him.
Last night, he debated on immediately killing the being. But if he did, he may never find Tiana again. He was sure she was out there, maybe this face stealing demon was using her and had her hidden away somewhere. That had to be it. There was no other reality he was willing to accept.
So when nightfall hit, he heard the slide of the guest window, and the soft crunch of grass in the chilly October night. Immediately, he hopped out of bed, sped to the hallway, and yanked down the attic chord. A set of stairs creaked down, and he firmly placed them on the floor. He climbed up with a sense of urgency, his head poking into the dusty room. He didn’t bother turning on the light, he knew exactly what he was looking for, and exactly where it was. He could sense its power.
Nanami tailed behind “Tiana”, careful to duck into the shadows when she seemed too suspicious or weary of being followed. Nanami had a plan; he would follow this impersonator to wherever it was keeping his wife, immediately kill it with no questions asked, and save Tiana. He wasn’t sure how he was going to explain his cursed technique, or his cursed tool, or anything about the world of sorcery. He’d have to improvise that part.
Nanami eyed the being pretending to be the love of his life. From behind, it looked almost exactly like Tiana, even down to the sway of her hips. But one thing that easily told that thing apart from the real Tiana physically is how thin it was. Tiana was five months into pregnancy. This thing wasn’t showing at all. One thing rang true, it may be able to imitate his lover’s face, but it could never imitate the love they made together.
As Nanami trailed behind, he recognized the scenery. They were walking along the street where her restaurant sat, the sound of a sloshing river adjacent to them. Nanami stuttered in his steps momentarily, and the being stopped. Before it could whip around, Nanami ducked into the same alley he had left that woman to die. Nanami’s face grew paler than the moon.
I’m gonna get her out, he thought. She’s in there waiting on me.
She’s been waiting ever since that night I failed to show up.
The being used Tiana’s keys to enter her safe haven, but Nanami had a set of keys of his own. He went around the back of the restaurant, entering through the kitchen. Blue encasing him, he eased through the room, careful not to knock any hanging pots or pans, careful not to carelessly creak the floorboards. When he got to the swinging doors that led to the large dining room, he didn’t see that thing there, nothing but empty tables and a glittering crystal chandelier. A grand staircase that led to the rooftop. It was empty.
But then he heard it.
Tiana’s voice, weak and helpless, crying out to him in pain.
“Nana…mi…he-help…”
Losing all tact, Nanami burst through the doors, and they swung loudly behind him. He frantically looked around, blood rushing through his ears as he continued to hear her calls, but couldn’t seem to find her.
“Nanami…p-please…”
“Tiana?” Nanami called back desperately. He had to find her. This was a matter of life and death. He was desperate. “Tiana!”
“Nanami?”
“Tiana, I’m here, just…” Nanami stammered, his worst nightmare coming true before his very eyes. “Tell me where you are!”
The chandelier above him shivered, and Nanami swears he hears a giggle in between Tiana’s broken sobs.
“Na-na-mi…” The once pained voice seemed to sing a song of mockery, and Nanami felt his blood turn cold. “Help me!”
Slowly, Nanami looked up to see the thing hanging from the chandelier with one arm, wearing Tiana’s face. Its eyes glowed like embers as it bared its teeth.
“Save me, Nanami Kento!” It sneered, followed by a heartless cackle. Nanami blinked slowly, nostrils flared. “Won’t you save me from this evil monster?”
“You little-”
Nanami didn’t get to finish his insult, the spirit lunging at him with speed Nanami hadn’t witnessed in years. He hadn’t felt a presence this strong in years, and it came from one of his own students. So seeing that same power being used but holding his wife’s face made him lock up with fear.
The thing tackled him, immediately wrapping its hands around his neck, long nails digging into his skin. It seemed to be laughing as if this were some sort of game to it, but that’s what human lives were to cursed spirits. Games to play when they are bored.
The oxygen severed itself from Nanami’s brain, making it hard to think straight. But thankfully, his instincts kicked in, kicking the demon in its abdomen and sending it backward and clearing a few tables as well.
Nanami staggered up, massaging his neck as he surveyed his opponent, ratioed line appearing on the beings neck, arms, and torso. But he couldn’t kill it just yet, he needed to know where the real Tiana went. He cursed under his breath, disappointed that he fell for such a simple trap. How blind could he be?
“Damn, that’s some strong legs you got.” The way Tiana’s voice was being used sent shivers down his spine. “You’d kick your own wife like that? In the stomach?”
“You are not my wife.” Nanami’s face tightened.
The demon tapped its chin, giving a clueless look.
“Then who am I to you?”
“A spawn from hell. A thief.” Nanami pointed his blade to the demon. His stance was wide. “You stole my wife’s face, and you will return it.”
“Hm?” The demon said, before erupting into laughter. A sound that was once so sweet was now tainted.
“Thief? I ain’t no thief.” The demon dragged its nails across its stolen face, and Nanami cringed. “She gave it up. I will admit, I haven’t looked this pretty in deca-”
Their sentence was cut short, blocking a swift attack from Nanami’s cleaver with its arm.
“Isn’t it rude to interrupt a lady while she’s speaking?”
“Stop using her voice.” Nanami spat.
Blows were volleyed back and forth, neither taking any real damage, but Tiana’s restaurant sure did. Pillars were splintered through, the stairs caved, and the beautiful white table clothes were sullied with dirt and splotches of blood. The two seemed to be at a stalemate, not because Nanami was weaker.
He couldn’t kill something that wore his wife’s face.
“You’re stalling.” The thing said, wiping at Tiana’s sweaty brow. “Why don’t you finish the job already, oh great sorcerer?” It taunted him. Nanami gritted his teeth.
“Tell me where you’re keeping her, or I might have to fulfill your wishes.”
“Oh please, you don’t have the balls.” The thing shrugged. “You couldn’t do it a few nights ago, and you sure as hell can’t do it now. You’re a selfish coward.”
Nanami gripped his weapon.
“If you had done your job in the first place, this wouldn’t be happening now.”
Nanami struck at its arm, slicing it at its perceived weak point, her forearm flying across the room, along with her hand and fingers. Blood spouted out, pouring onto the floor and sopping Tiana’s favorite pair of shoes. The being stood there dumbfounded at first, then gave a genuinely impressed look.
“Nice hit.” It said as it nodded its head. “But shouldn't you have aimed for my neck?”
“Would you like me to put you out of your misery so soon?” Nanami dared. He was angry, not only because of this face stealer, but because it was inherently right.
The thing held up a finger to halt him.
“Before you do that, I have something funny to show you. I swear you’re going to laugh, watch this-”
Nanami raised his cleaver, just in case the demon tried something yet again, but instead of attacking, their once golden eyes dimmed to that innocent brown that Nanami was all too familiar with. Its sharp fangs receded back into its gums. Their long nails shrunk back into their beds, tucked in for the night. The face blinked once, then twice, those doe eyes growing larger in the dark.
Nanami felt himself sink into despair.
“Ken?” Her voice was soft, clueless, so incorrupt. She looked around in fear, her breath stifling as she saw the state of her restaurant; years of work destroyed before her eyes. “Ken what’s going-”
She winced, going to hold her arm, but it was missing. She hadn’t caught onto that yet, and Nanami tried to step in quickly.
“Tiana, don’t move, okay?” He stepped towards her, waving the meat cleaver around, and Tiana yelled as she jumped back.
“Why do you have that?” She yelled. “Why-” She looked around the room, then to Nanami’s bloodied weapon, then to the floor where her shoes were squeaking in dark liquid. “Why am I here? What’s-”
“Tiana, I need you to calm down.” Nanami tried to talk calmly, but it didn’t work. Hell, even he was panicking inside. Tiana felt overstimulated, her mind whirling around as she kept trying to clutch her arm but seemed to be missing it somehow. It hurt so bad.
“My arm-!” Tiana winced. Her body seemed to throb, and tears pricked her eyes. “It hurts-” She raised it slowly, and Nanami tried to stop her.
“Don’t look-”
“It hurts, Nanami…” She cried out, prying her eyes open in the dark as she raised it. “My arm…?”
Where her arm should be was nothing but clean cut flesh at her elbow, blood spilling from the wound down her arm like water trickling down a waterfall. Her breathing hitched, looking at the grotesque nub, a piece of white peeking out.
It was bone.
She let out a blood curdling cry.

the color of new love
Rating: T+ Pairing: Warrior of Light x G'raha Tia Word Count: 8,990 Tags: First Kiss, Love Confessions Content Warnings: Endwalker Spoilers
Kirika’s eyes glisten in the hallway light, silver and clear, like starlight caught in a bottle. His chest feels lighter, his worries finally spoken, his offer of support accepted without hesitation. Though his ears burn with embarrassment at the enthusiasm he’d shown in his little speech — To the ends of the world and beyond! — the actual feeling of embarrassment faded away entirely at the way she’d giggled. The smile still lingers on her lips as she leans against the door to her quarters, pink nightshirt slipping off one shoulder as she fiddles absently with the doorknob. Her hair which has been left loose falls over one shoulder, brushing her waist and making her look… younger, somehow. Softer. His gaze lingers on her form, drinking her in like a man consumed, before he forces himself to move.  Offering her a final, warm smile, he raises his hand in a half-wave.  “Sleep well, my friend.” May all your dreams be sweet, he adds in his mind as he lowers his gaze, biting at his lower lip. May you find all the happiness and rest you need. “Raha, wait—” It nearly hurts, the quickness with which he returns his gaze to her face. Her eyes widen as their gazes lock, though it’s hard to tell if she’s surprised at herself or at his reaction. The look only lasts a moment before it melts away, dissolving into something wistful and sweet. Her long, dark eyelashes cast elegant shadows across her cheekbones as she glances at the floor. “...must you leave?”

Absolutely no one besides me cares, but I'm super tickled that two more members of the UtaPri seiyuu cast have now voiced characters in FFXIV.
For the record: --Suzuki Tatsuhisa (Kurosaki Ranmaru) is Aymeric de Borel --Uchida Yuma (Otori Eiji) is G'raha Tia --Suwabe Junichi (Jinguji Ren) is Ardbert --Sawashiru Miyuki (Nanami Haruka) is Minfilia --Nakamura Yuuichi (Tsukimiya Ringo) is Thancred Waters --Toriumi Kousuke (Aijima Cecil) is Zenos
And now we have: --Ono Daisuke (Sumeragi Kira) as Zoraal Ja --Yamashita Daiki (Amakusa Shion) as Shenza
It really makes me happy with how much crossover there is. And damn if I didn't spend most of Dawntrail (which I just finished) going "Damn it, I KNOW I know Zoraal Ja's voice, who IS THAT" only to realize, of course, it's Kujo Jotaro.
