For Him Episode 3

When we last left NailHim they were in the bathtub for half an episode and then we got a plot dropped on us indicating that Him might be using Nail as a replacement for his dead (?) boyfriend Blue. So I'm stressed but interested.

Okay, we're actually getting the scene with the sides that was abruptly cut from episode. Not the chocolate syrup though! I know I am a fundamentally hungry person but I feel strongly that sex and snacks should be separate activities. I think Phai is the tattoo artist? Anyway he's like 'oh no I think I slept with a babygay and he imprinted like a duckling.'

See? Separate. But as cute as this is, I am impatient for any of my many questions to be answered, because possibly none of this is actually cute and is just creepy?

I don't know why I find it hilarious that the group chat is named 'music band' but I do.

Boyfriend era incoming! I both want more answers and want some fluff before real drama hits.

I have to say, my experience of this show is influenced by actually having a doppelgänger, my friend 'Miley.' People remarked on how similar we looked when we first met, but I just brushed it off until someone came up to me at a gathering and asked me how Miley's husband was, and I had to be like, 'fine probably, but I don't keep him in my house.' Several years of introducing myself as 'not Miley' followed. Objectively speaking I know look more similar to her than her own sister, and we dress the same, and talk the same, but there's still a part of me that's like 'What's wrong with everyone? I wear glasses! Her nose is thinner! We're not even the same ethnicity!'

All of which is to say, if Nail finally sees a picture of Blue and is like, 'this dude looks nothing like me, Te is just crazy,' I would be like, 'yep, a 100% completely realistic outcome.'

I just love how both Him and Nail both go "hey it's ok you're still sad about your ex and I don't have to be mad that your technically still thinking/ still hung up on another guy while we are currently in a very very NEW relationship cause that's perfectly normal and that doesn't mean it has to take anything away from us and our" and honestly even more so true for Nail cause he JUST broke up with Jay not that long ago and his feelings that are revolved around Jay didn't just immediately disappear, cause he still sad about it he still mad about it and I'm sure there's probably still a part of him that wishes none of it happened and he was still with Jay (who knows about this one, maybe, who knows?) And that's ok and and would be absolutely insane if Him were to get upset about Nail getting sad and wanting to leave the restaurant cause he saw Jay there, but I've seen that in other BLs, I've never seen any BL talk about this and say it's ok actually, I just loved seeing Him immediately validating him and Nails feelings telling him "it's ok to still be sad and no that doesn't upset me" and HIM being the one to offer up the choice of leaving, multiple times I might add therefore asking "are you sure? are you sure?" cause some people need multiple "are you sures" to understand 'hey it's ok to make the decision you want to make and not the one you think is going to better for another person and their feelings', p.s i am one of those people

I finally finished For Him and I honestly wish it was a better show because it has one of the better representations of mental health struggles I’ve seen in a while. Intentionally or no, it had the message that if you feel you need it, seek help, that there are people who want to help you, regardless of who you are or what you have done.

Him’s mental illness is not specified but I think it’s a safe bet to go with depression. He blamed himself for Blue’s death and sank into that feeling. Rather than judge him or further blame him, his mother instead begs him to get help, to see a doctor. And he does. Lots of the time that doesn’t happen and the character in question (in this case Him) either continues to struggle or after a while is just magically cured, never to struggle again.

But Him gets help and what’s more is the narrative never blames him for needing help. The only people who look down on him for needing help are the antagonists (Te and Type). An enormous emphasis is placed on Him keeping up with his medication, with his therapy appointments. Everyone who cares for him wants Him to get better, to continue to get help if and when he needs it. It is refreshing to see and I hate that it’s buried in a story that makes little sense.

Even Blue’s suicide was done rather well or at least what I could watch of it, which was most of it.* Suicide is often a spur of the moment action. While people may think about it and there are people who makes plans right down to the day and time, more often it is just decided on in the moment. Blue struggled and in the end, he couldn’t keep going.

Blue and Him are two possible paths that a person can take. A fork in the road where each chose a different path, a path that felt right for them. Regardless of where they ended up, they had that choice to make.

I wish For Him was a better show because I love that message. I love the message that at a certain point, you need to make a choice. I won’t judge Blue for making the choice he did, he felt it was the right thing to do for him. Him chose a different path and thus the story happened. However it’s buried in a narrative that makes little sense and is a little exhausting after a while. Not many want to wade through the bs to get to that kind of message and I get that. I usually wouldn’t want to either. I only tried because I loved Nail, and surprised myself by finding this message hidden under all of it. It’s there and I wish it was louder.

*Suicide and suicide attempts are about the only thing I can’t watch without feeling sick and needing to stop so I had to skip through some of the scene.

For Him Episode 5

I'm confused because there's some issue where Nail needs to interview Te, but it's like we skipped a scene. I guess that's fine, Him's mom is here and that's the drama I care about.

Mom is clearly also on team 'this is weird and awkward' re: Nail's appearance. Excellent facial expressions, no notes.

Anyway, we've finally reached the phase where Nail is starting to get weirded out, so that's fun. I think the slow creeping doubt as more people react weirdly to him is more effective than if he just suddenly saw a picture of Blue and freaked out (which I'm assuming will happen).

This is not actually a reassuring statement in context Him, your mom and I are now both concerned you really are just using Nail as a replacement for Him and that you may need more therapy. But on the other hand Te is the one 100% definitely using Nail as a replacement for Blue.

I love how Nail won't so much as accept a drink. Te is really bad at being a villain. I think even if Nail wasn't that into Him, he'd still be creeped out by how strong Te is coming on, but Te's methods might work if he was in a BL with any other main character. Nail is just absolutely not having it though.

There's a point at which product placement becomes so OTT I can't possibly be mad about it. I'm not sure why Chao is still putting up with the clingy puppy though. Well, besides the obvious.

This is amazing. I love the implication that the girls have made Pae be Charlie to their Angels enough times before that he's just resigned to it. But also an abrupt end to the episode. The editing/pacing of this show is not great, and this episode especially had to many flashback to things we already saw, but everything else is better than I expected. I'm looking forward to what dirt my girls manage to dig up and also the love interest for Pae that was hinted in the bts.
