Goldsboro Bomb
One of the west side of Big Daddy’s Road, halfway between Faro and Musgrave Crossroads in Wayne County, NC, is a soybean field that looks like any other in the surrounding countryside. Except this field has a concealed the abandoned remains of a four-megaton hydrogen bomb beneath its sandy soil ever since the early 1960s.
The years leading up to the Cuban Missile Crisis were a peak of Cold War activity, and one of the busiest projects was something called Operation Chrome Dome. In this mission, the U.S. Air Force countered the threat of Soviet sneak attacks by keeping a fleet of B-52 bombers in the air as long as possible, fully loaded with atomic weapons. The name of the mission jokingly referred both to Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev’s bald head and to the route taken by the planes, which flew over the North Pole toward Russia, and then turned back at the last possible moment. Refueling in the air, the planes would stay aloft and complete the circuit as long as their crews could avoid exhaustion.
The near-constant flying took a toll on machinery as well as men. As one B-52 was on its way back to Seymour Johnson AFB near Goldsboro, NC, metal fatigue caused a leak in the right-wing fuel tank. Fire erupted in the plane just after midnight on January 24, 1961, when 37,000 pounds of jet fuel poured form the tank. The eight-man crew bailed out just before an explosion broke up the plane, but three members died in the incident. As the huge bomber was blown to pieces at an altitude of about 8,000 feet, two MK 39 thermonuclear bombs separated from the wreckage and landed some distance from where the rest of the fragmented aircraft hit the ground.
Both bombs were equipped with parachutes, theoretically allowing time for the bomber to escape the scene before the atomic blast would go off. The parachute of one of the bombs deployed, and it was quickly found and recovered.
The other parachute did not open. Its bomb slammed into the rain-softened ground of a soggy field at an estimated eight hundred miles an hour, leaving an impact crater about five feet deep and then feet wide. But there was no weapon in sight. By 1:30 p.m. that day, full-scale recovery efforts began as munitions specialists began frantically-and secretly-digging for the bomb. To avoid panicking the local population or creating a sightseeing nightmare, press and politicians were told that the excavators were only looking for a missing seat from the airplane crash. Terrible conditions-freezing rain, loose high explosives, potential radioactive contamination-combined to slow the salvage operation.
Eight feet below the surface, the first pieces of the late bomb were discovered. The next day, more fragments were found at depths of twelve and fifteen feet. Four days after the crash, at nearly twenty feet deep, pieces of detonators and alarming devices were discovered. The excavation continued to grow, and two weeks later, it was two hundred feet in diameter and nearly fifty feet deep. The massive pumps and heavy equipment brought in to assist the excavation were no match for groundwater rushing in from nearby Nahunta Swamp, or the quicksand.
At the end of May, the government gave up. The hole had already cost at least half a million dollars to dig and showed no sign of every yielding the rest of the weapon, which was probably almost two hundred feet underground. The government refilled the hole and bought an easement on the land. The farmer who owned it could continued to planting crops but he was banned from ever digging near the site. It’ll be too bad if property values go up and development encroaches on the area, since the weapon’s missing pieces-some of them plutonium-will need to remain untouched for the next 24,000 years.
