Flyer: Low-key Drama
Because I like this trend very much, I also used Photoshop and Indesign to make a flyer for Low-key Drama.
I think the main concept of this trend is “luxury elements of everyday life”. They used exaggerated sleeves and collar to show some dramatic, but at the same time, through daywear fabrics such as crepe, its high drama have translated into a low-key aesthetic.
I chose the “Monotype Corsica” as the main font. In order to mix high and low, I chose this font that combines gorgeousness and simplicity. And I also used the dark blue, which is important color in my board. In the first page, the cover, I also used two color for the trend title to made the text more layered.

It is worth noting that it used some special fabrics like water-soluble yarns and recycled metallic Lurex. Soft cellulose gloss combined with segment-dyed yarn creates a digital glow.
In printing process, there are also some color differences. The overall color appeared darker, it did not create a good sense of gloss and translucency. Maybe I should choose brighter colors if I want to do the look book.

ukrainian fashion week: nadya dzyak
(images via ufw)
ummmm...so am i allowed to make some utterly crude crack about being happy at the kind of kitty we did see on the runway at the s/s 2013 nadya dzyak (Надя Дзяк) show at ukrainian fashion week in kiev?  after all, we've seen a lot of flesh from homegirl at other times (see s/s 2011 & s/s 2012), so i suppose the former isn't totally out of the question, but nevertheless, a model hitting the catwalk carrying a charming gray cat (fifth from bottom) in her arms that only appeared the slightest bit perturbed felt like a fresher and more alluring way to do things (we've seen a lot of dogs on the runway, but the only felines, to my recollection, were at the jean paul gaultier a/w 2006 paris show).
but i digress, and anyway, i'm being obnoxious.  as we've been seeing from the other designers in kiev thus far, ms. dzyak was also feeling the mood for light, airy colours and fabrics, and called her spring collection 'provocative and feminine'.  really, that's supposed to be the title.  just rolls right off the tongue, non?  but anyway, the ukrainian site lady tch went on to point out that (trans.) "the inspiration for its creation was the image of the legendary Audrey Hepburn in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'...The designer admitted that her collection is designed for aristocratic women who have a strong personality and sense of style."
none of those are really new or innovative concepts, and if i went back even just through opt's archives trying to find all the collections inspired by one or the other, i'd never get this review finished.  but suffice it to say that although i'm not really screaming at the idea of another tribute to one holly golightly, it's the clothes themselves we should be basing our assessments on, and i think those were just fine.  maybe not quite as interesting as where the designer was a year ago, but still, in lock-step with where the rest of kiev has been thus far this season, and replete with plenty of wearable pieces (including a few more sculptural ones, as second from bottom, which maybe didn't always sync up with the general overtone of the rest of the flowing frocks, but were nevertheless to my mind amongst those most interesting).
alors.  lady tochka explained that (trans.) "Nadya Dzyak tried to combine rigor with geometrically smooth femininity: the collection presented both flying, delicate dresses with ruffles and pleating and minimalist tops, dresses, and coats with sharp lines."  and they're right, although i frankly would have liked a little more information on how the designer saw these two juxtaposed notions coexisting within the framework of her collection, or how she sees (particularly the latter) relating to the film.  but no matter, it was a pretty nice wardrobe with a lot of versatile pieces, in a bevy of great shades like pale rose yellow, the ubiquitous summer white, petal pink, sand, silver, and some classic black.
and in their always-quite-interesting write ups, the blog be in trend this time honed in on some points, like the fact that the designer appeared to be attempting to disguise more womanly curves with her cuts, while pencil skirts, pleating, and draping (along with monochromatic pieces) were among the major stories for the day.  she also did some interesting things with fringe, transparency, and shoulder coverings (or whatever they were, as above & second from above; they looked to be almost military-inspired), but at times i wondered if so many different ideas didn't begin to detract a bit from the otherwise charming collection, simply because the designer didn't have enough time to explore all of them.
and finally, before we close out, i found an interesting fact on the subject of the collection's accessories: the ukrainian site fashion blog related that ms. dzyak has a sponsorship deal this season (at least) with sheba, the cat food company, which apparently explains the presence of one on her runway, but she also chose to make cat collars this season, which doubled as bracelets on the models' wrists (they have a few good detail shots).  it felt to me quite the holly golightly thing to do (as well as a good number of other hipster-types i know), and i liked the eye masks also.  in all, i'd call it a success, but i hope in the future she sometimes remembers to reign in her ideas a bit.  she has so many good ones, but there are also a limit to how many work (not to mention that we can ingest) in one showtime's sitting (see some nice backstage images at be in trend).

ukrainian fashion week: nadya dzyak
(images via ufw)
when opt last left nadya dzyak, a year ago (s/s 2011), her work was strictly, almost painstakingly, restricted to beige looks with an occasional splice of black or element that suddenly elevated a cute party dress into severely art-y territory.  seeing her present again in kiev for s/s 2012, we now witness the growth of the artist expanding beyond the neutrals (and even embracing some of the spring's key trends), serving up some thoughtful looks that were often as intriguing as they were desirable.
as the russian site geometria informs us (oh, joy!  we're finally coming upon some info about the collections!) the range was titled 'suprematism' and was inspired by the early twentieth century work of such artists as nikolai suetin, kasimir malevich, and olga rozanova.  as the site describes, these artists (trans.) "keenly felt the need for simple shapes and graphic combinations to express the spirit of modernity and innovation," and these ideas, as well as architectural structure, informed the designer's work for spring.
as previously mentioned, ms. dzyak played to some of the major trends we've been seeing from prior cities for the upcoming season, with colour a key one of these.  though her beloved beige still factored into the collection, geometric colour-blocking in shades of tangerine (the key hue of the spring), electric blue, mint, pale chartreuse, aquamarine, pencil eraser pink, black, and aubergine took center stage, with occasional stripes and painterly abstract motifs adding for interest.
geometria mentions that silk in several incarnations (moire, duppioni, faille) formed the core of the show's looks, while perforated leather was also featured.  the juxtapositioning of these natural materials--one soft and diaphanous, the other tougher and edgier--seemed to be an important idea in a collection that felt as much about exploration of masculine and feminine elements as it was something sweet concealed beneath a strong and sporty exterior.  pleats--an incredibly hot trend for spring from milan--were shown as a focus today, and on some of the most exceptional exits, no less.
in an interesting contrast to her presentation of a year ago, ms. dzyak has moved away from her beloved dresses and into the realization that the modern woman needs a lot more in her wardrobe to live.  thus, the spring show felt as much about offering up a complete wardrobe for an entire season as it was an experiment for the designer to play with her separates.  thus, though like what we saw in sydney, flowing maxi dresses and skirts (along with some spectacular evening gowns) were key, tailored blazers, trim pencil skirts, prim menswear-style shirts, some athletic-type outerwear (the occasional jacket or vest), and even a few pairs of shorts made up the sum of the collection.
asymmetry and exploring what lay beneath seemed another of the set's primary themes and with cut-outs and lines that suddenly stripped away to reveal a bit of flesh, to curve a hem by unexpected methods, we were treated to some breathtaking visions, particularly the slouchy lime-shaded colour-blocked jersey jumpsuit (bottom) that covered a single shoulder in that hue and left the other arm swathed in a patch of carrot.  it was dazzlingly contemporary.  a little more questionable were those moments ms. dzyak opted to send her models topless on the runway, such as she did for evelina mambetova's khaki shorts look.  it felt a little clunky and more like she'd run out of pieces (or was trying to shock) than that she might have been making any strong stylist's statement.
in all though, such slip-ups were comfortingly rare, and on the whole this was one of the more thorough, impressive shows opt has seen from kiev thus far this season.  ukrainian fashion seems to often straddle the line between the more avant-y japanese and the perplexing fashions we see coming from russia (with a lot more historic costume elements behind them), and though there is a lot that's great here, it can leave one to wonder if this might be why it hasn't been embraced as yet by a larger audience.  therefore, it was a real treat to see such an of-the-moment range as ms. dzyak's, to say nothing of her personal advancements for the season.  it could compete with some of the sharper shows from new york or london.

ukrainian fashion week: nadya dzyak
(images via ufw)
sticking with the whole ukrainian embrace of neutrals for the upcoming spring/summer 2011 season, nadya dzyak showed a collection largely composed of little dresses, which proved mostly likable for the non-fashionie, with a few efforts to explore that which we endlessly refer to abstractly as "avant garde".
her website, as these things tend to do, rattles off to us some slush about being for those discerning types of women looking for "luxury, sensuality, sophisticat(ion)"...the type of drill designers undergo purporting to give us a clear sense of vision without saying anything intelligible.  but perhaps i'm being unfair.  i do, after all, have a high standard as applied to other people's websites.
the clothes themselves, although sometimes suffering under the weight of too much beige, were pleasant enough, at times presenting some idea that was both tasteful and creative, that so rare in this world blend we critical types pee on our shoes whenever beholding and was best exemplified in the gown below, top and bottom image leafy vest-things.
at other times, in a curious attempt to straddle the sexy, she ended up turning out getups that appeared something the quiet loner, at home with his sex doll, might create out of plastic wrap and scraps from his old pants (see top) to better results than one might expect, but would still never suffice in any of the categories that she above describes herself as fitting in.
this feels a label that has fans beholden to it, those who will sway little by a word unkind to their beloved, and perhaps draws in new customers with its promise of that life so many seek.  for the times it does execute on what it suggests, congratulations, and those pieces are worth exploring.  at others, not so much and your money would be elsewhere much better spent.  though i have a feeling at nadya dzyak, sometimes that is beside the point.
