do you ever give yourself ideas that seem like they shouldn't take much time in execution and then end up taking up way too much time?

anyway we're back with the first real entry for thisisnotthenerd's d20 stats of 2024. this time we're talking:

cast appearances by episode count

season count is one thing; there's only 21 of those so far. by contrast, we've had 222 episodes of d20 as of 1/16/2024. by may 2024 we'll have finished fhjy and hit 241.

by the current count, the intrepid heroes' full seasons account for 128 episodes of the total 222, or around 57.6% of the total episode count. if you add the fantasy high oneshots, it bumps up to 59.4%, and if you consider that we're adding 20 to the count with fhjy, by may 2024, intrepid heroes episodes will make up 62.6% of the dimension 20 catalog.

anyway here's the cast list:

the uncontested winner is brennan lee mulligan with 211/222 episodes. 95% attendance. the only times he hasn't been there are: the 4 episodes of shriek week, the 6 episodes of coffin run, and the gencon mismag oneshot.

in second place is lou wilson, with 151/222 episodes. this is every intrepid heroes season (128/222), plus 3 sidequests (4+10+6) and 3 oneshots.

in third, sweeping her way with the most recent season, is siobhan thompson with 147/222, after the ih seasons, 3 oneshots and 2 sidequests (6+10)

in fourth, we have ally beardsley with 144/222, after the ih seasons, 2 oneshots, and 2 sidequests (10+4)

very close in fifth, we have zac oyama, with 143/222, after the ih seasons, 4 oneshots, and 2 sidequests (6+6).

in sixth is emily axford, with 138/222, from 126 ih episodes, 2 oneshots, and one sidequest (10)

and in seventh is brian murphy, with 130 episodes, from the ih seasons and 3 oneshots.

after this we have a steep drop off, since the ih episodes make up 57% of the total count, and will make up 61% by the end of junior year. anyway next is aabria iyengar, with 48 episodes, a little over half which she gm'd (26).

next is erika ishii, with 37 episodes. they've been in 5 sidequests (6+4+10+6+10) and one oneshot.

to finish off the top ten, rekha shankar and izzy roland are tied with 26, since both have been in three sidequests [(6+10+10) and (10+6+10) respectively]

the last of the three cree, in 11th place, is matthew mercer, with 18 (6+6+6) episodes, 6 of which he gm'd

after which is carlos luna and mike trapp with 12, though carlos has been behind the scenes as crew in many more.

13th is taken up with another tie, this time between danielle radford and becca scott, who each have 11, though their splits are different, since danielle has been in 2 sidequests and a oneshot (4+6+1), while becca has been in 1 sidequest and 1 oneshot (10+1)

after this we get into the mass groups:

with 10 episodes there's a couple of options for how they got to that point, but less options for 6 and 4

Second Generation Offshoots

The fourth child in the second generation was almost not born, as Dinah had the camp’s first encounter with the Grim Reaper while pregnant.

Luckily, Fernando was able to save Dinah and their unborn baby’s lives.

After their close call, baby Wilma was born under a waterfall.

The next day Rosalyn gave birth to her second daughter, Ida, in a tree.

Ida grows up to be a jump rope enthusiast

which probably kept her out of trouble.

Rosalyn may have played a role in encouraging her daughter to be tough.  Unfortunately, as an adult and elder, Ida was frequently getting into fights.

A day or two after Wilma and Ida’s birth, Misha gave birth to her first child, Griffin.  She was the last woman in the camp to have a child.  By the time Griffin was born, some of the other ladies were already on their third pregnancies.  Not surprisingly, the father was Fernando. 

(I recently made a list of the second generation children and their parents and the list of fathers has a pattern that goes Fernando, Fernando, Fernando, Theron, Fernando, Fernando, Fernando, Theron.)

By time these children reached adulthood, my lot was getting really crowded.  I hated to split up the colony, but it was getting to be too many sims to manage.  I decided to keep the sims who found partners within the camp (like Silvia and Manuel) on the main lot and started moving sims who found outside partners to new empty lots in pairs.  Moving them out two at a time didn’t make a big difference on the main family size immediately, but it was a good number to keep the new households at a reasonable size for a longer period of time.

Ida never settled down with a particular partner, but she had a lot of chemistry with some of the sims in the household of women I created, so I sent her to live with the Amazons.

Wilma fell in love with Ralph, who was from the third extra group of sims I created.

She had some competition with Rosalyn for his affections, but once they moved out he was more faithful to Wilma.

Griffin fell in love with Nadine from the Amazon tribe.

I ended up moving Wilma, Ralph, Griffin, Nadine and any children they already had into their own lot.

Wilma had given birth to her first son, Calvin, before they moved out of the main homestead.

And Nadine had already had a couple of relationships prior to settling down with Griffin.  She had a brief engagement to one of her fellow Amazons.

And she had a son named, Neil, from another relationship who she brought with her when she moved in with Griffin.  (Neil’s father is Blake from my failed Beta household.  He was the one who had a pregnant wife who died.  His fling with Nadine happened after he was widowed.)

Their new life was a difficult one.  There were a lot of close calls with Death.

I mean, maybe you shouldn’t crop down trees while pregnant

or go right back to it right after being revived . . .

On top of that she gets struck by lightning.  Nadine was having a really tough time.  I think the game was determined to kill her.

Meanwhile, Wilma and Ralph are struggling with parenthood.

Wilma:  I need you to take the baby.

Ralph: *drools*

Wilma: Okay then.

She sets the baby down then proceeds to have a mental breakdown of her own.

Calvin is excited about the new baby, but is not having any fun.

Ralph makes it to his elder years, but doesn’t get much time to enjoy them. His death was probably from sickness and I wasn’t able to get anyone to him in time to rescue him.

Wilma takes his death very hard.

Nadine seemed committed to Griffin, but she never really truly settled down.

Griffin finally gets fed up with her cheating

and divorces her.

I think they both know it’s for the best, but it’s not any less sad.

Nadine knows she needs to apologize so they can at least be friends.

Unfortunately, they don’t get a chance to start over and Griffin doesn’t get a chance to adjust to his post-divorce life since sickness takes a hold of him.

Since he and Nadine hate each other, it’s on Wilma to try to save her half-brother, but she is unsuccessful.  :(

Wilma and the children were all furious with Nadine for cheating on Griffin, so I ended up moving her back to the Amazons in order to keep the peace.  Wilma is currently the only sim of her generation left in this household, but she has plenty of company.  Her children with Ralph and Griffin and Nadine’s children still live on the lot with her and their new partners and children.  Wilma and Ralph had four children, three sons and a daughter.  Griffin and Nadine had two children together, a son and a daughter.  Neil continued to live with them too until he moved out to live with his partner on her homestead.

surprised this wasn't hiding in the spreadsheet before but here goes.

seating chart by player + d20's gender splits

this one came mostly from analysis of old data--instead on the cast appearances chart, here's where everyone sat during their full seasons (oneshots are not counted here to reduce their impact as outliers)

as you'll notice, the data is repeated for the intrepid heroes sequel seasons because they were not made at the same time and this allows me to standardize and check how many people have sat in each seat more easily. also, it would mean i'd have to count everyone for each seat once, and i'm not planning on doing that right now. anyways.

for my splits:

first off, disclaimer that gender is a societal construct and that you can do whatever you want with it so long as you don't harm others. this list uses the pronouns indicated by the cast members. this list goes by the cast members' current gender--retroactively effective. if they came out after the season aired, they're still listed with their gender at the time of posting (Jan-Feb 2024).

for the sake of simplicity and not making separate categories for every nb cast member my categories are female (she/her pronouns), male (he/him), and nonbinary/gnc (they/them, other combinations of pronouns), which encompasses more complex combinations. yes the drag queens are split up because it's based on their pronouns as indicated. not everyone in the gnc group uses the same pronouns, so nonbinary/gnc is in use as an umbrella term.

so without further ado:

overall gender statistics

out of 48 cast members of dimension 20, there were 20 in the she/her category, 21 in the he/him category, and 7 in the nonbinary pronouns category

in other words the ratio of cast members is 41.6% female, 43.75% male, and 14.58% nonbinary/other genders

the main cast i.e. the intrepid heroes + brennan is a little less even, since brennan shifts the group toward a male bias (4/7, vs 2/7 female and 1/7 nonbinary)

so a pretty even split wrt gender and pronoun usage overall. some seasons differ in composition, but generally there's a pretty even split (female/male/gender non-conforming) with the GM tipping the balance.

gender stats by season

all of the intrepid heroes seasons (fantasy high, the unsleeping city, fantasy high sophomore year, a crown of candy, the unsleeping city chapter ii, a stasrtruck odyssey, neverafter, fantasy high junior year) are 57.1% male, 28.5% female, and 14.2% nonbinary [4, 2, 1]

escape from the bloodkeep: same breakdown as the intrepid heroes seasons: 57.1% male, 28.5% female, and 14.2% nonbinary [4, 2, 1]

tiny heist: a stronger majority this time since the mcelboys and their dad are there: 71.4% male, 28.5% female [5, 2]

pirates of leviathan: similar to ih breakdown; 57.1% male, 42.8% female [4, 3]

mice & murder: maintains the intrepid heroes split of 57.1% male, 28.5% female, and 14.2% nonbinary [4, 2, 1], with ally holding the last category.

misfits & magic: with only 5 people there's an almost even split; 40% female, 40% male, 20% gnc [2, 2, 1]

the seven: our season of ladies; 71.4% female, 14.2% nonbinary, 14.2% male [5, 1, 1]

shriek week: another almost even season; 40% female, 40% gnc, 20% male [2, 2, 1]

coffin run: another 5-person season; 40% female, 40% male, 20% gnc [2, 2, 1]

a court of fey and flowers: follows the ih split; 57.1% male, 28.5% female, and 14.2% nonbinary [4, 2, 1]

the ravening war: 6 person season, so we're looking at 66.6% male, 33.3% female [4, 2]

dungeons and drag queens: this season is a little tricky since the players are simultaneous performing in drag, but using their listed pronouns we get the general split; 40% female, 40% gnc, 20% male [2, 2, 1]

mentopolis: also follows the intrepid heroes split: 57.1% male, 28.5% female, and 14.2% nonbinary [4, 2, 1]

burrow's end: the intrepid heroes split in the opposite direction; 57.1% female, 28.5% male, and 14.2% nonbinary [4, 2, 1]

for our 7 person seasons, the most common split is the intrepid heroes split, of 57.1% male, 28.5% female, and 14.2% nonbinary [4, 2, 1]. This pattern goes for 12/21 seasons of dimension 20. otherwise we tend to lean to one direction or another.

for the 5 person seasons, there's a pattern of a 2, 2, 1 split, but it's evenly split between [f, m, gnc] and [f, gnc, m].

gender splits in the seating chart

for the seating chart, it's a little different. there's two ways of tallying this up; by season or by cast member. the critical difference being that the latter does not allow repeats (of the intrepid heroes generally but also other returning cast) while the former does. i suppose the other way of stating it would be that we can count it up by occurrence or by total number.

since i don't feel like calculating percentages for this set, they will be displayed as ratios, like so: [F:M:NB]. keep in mind that some seats are not used for all seasons, so the numbers that the ratios add up to will differ.

L1: by occurrence, L1 has a 9:9:3 ratio with repeats, and 7:6:3 by total number of cast, so ever so slightly female-biased

L2: by occurrence, L2 has a 7:8:1 ratio with repeats, and 5:6:1 by total number of cast, so ever so slightly male-biased

L3: by occurrence, L3 has a 11:8:2 ratio with repeats, and 8:5:2 by total number of cast, so strongly female-biased

R3: by occurrence, R3 has a 9:9:3 ratio with repeats, and 4:6:3 by total number of cast, so male-biased. the difference in total number comes from the fact that siobhan, aabria, and lily all sit in R3 on multiple occasions

R2: by occurrence, R2 has a 2:9:6 ratio with repeats, and 2:7:2 by total number of cast, so male-biased with a strong nb/gnc presence. the drop comes from ally and erika both sitting there multiple times

R1: by occurrence, R1 has a 6:11:4 ratio with repeats, and 6:8:3 by total number of cast, so strongly male-biased. as you can probably guess, the difference comes from murph sitting in his favorite seat.

GM: by occurrence, we're looking at a 4:16:1 ratio, but a 2:2:1 by total number. if you account for the fact that brennan, the in-house gm, has been in the hot seat for 15 seasons, this makes more sense.
