プリンセス・ナディア 「ふしぎの海のナディア」より
ENG: "Princess Nadia - from Fushigi no Umi no Nadia"
I had purchased this little book some odd months ago now. It was surprisingly pretty cute and not much information or scans are shown online so I thought I would shed some light on it!
Published under the Japanese entertainment magazine Animage's "Animage Bunko" label, which refers to its size and material, in September of 1990. This edition features 90 pages worth of snapshots, artworks, and promotional materials of Nadia the Secret of Blue Water all centered around Nadia La Arwall herself. It's quite a treat to look at!

For those wondering, Bunkos' (short for bunkobon) in Japan, are paperback books that are characterized for their small compact size, and cheap retail price. Often, they bear slip-on covers, and will typically have surprisingly thick, and durable pages.
Not much else to say really, it's just a cool booklet ^^

Whenever I get the chance, I'll post a mega link to the scans of this book when I finish doing that.

need someone to draw Clarisse d'Cagliostro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Nadia la Arwall, Sōryū Asuka Langley and Princess Mononoke as a magical girl team: Clarisse in pink, Nausicaa in black, Nadia in blue, Asuka in red and San in yellow or green.
Lusheeta seems a bit too young but maybe you could have her as a chibiusa / momoe nagisa type sidekick

Nadia: the secret of Blue water was a very popular 1990s anime by Gainax who later did Evangelion under the same director, infact Shinji’s design is often joked said to be based off Nadia. A collage you reblogged had Nadia in itThe titular character, Nadia, is a girl of non european or asian origin who works in a circus in 1890s France, meeting co-protagonist, Jean, who is french, together they eventually Captain Nemo the man in the above. Also if you liked Team Rocket from Pokemon, one of their inspirations is in this series.
Tumblr media
Nadia is noted to look African and believes she came from the country, she was also originally going to have textured hair, but the animators found it difficult and this was sadly dropped.
Spoiler, but she is later revealed to be from the fictional Atlantean society. That said the Atlanteans have an Egypt motif and all Atlantean characters have dark skin. Prejudice against Nadia is also briefly touched upon.
Tumblr media
One of the filler episodes has the cast go to Africa, however the filler arcs are generally disliked among fans for plot/characterization reasons and even the director who noted they were forced into the series by higher ups.
Bit of a personal note, but it is disappointing to me that popular and influential early anime like Macross and Nadia had non white and non asian characters, yet despite their popularity, they didn’t seem to have much effect on the diversity of other anime.
PS: Your submit box is very hard for me to use on both mobile and desktop Chrome, IDK why though outside of it being hard to scroll down or up?
What country is she said to come from? Idk if something glitched or if you meant continent. Either way, I’ll look into details when I get a chance. I think I have less disappointment in other anime not following suit on adding in other characters to their narratives than say - the HOARD of American ones who threw in a token sometimes and rarely developed them. We’ve got more of us here than in Japan, so while I know that there ARE other people who live there, I expect less from them, especially during that time to have broad representation.
I’ll come back to this one. Idk if it’s because I’ve been up and down the stairs and in and out of the nursery for 6 hours, but I can’t tell if I’m looking at an actual Black female character or if I read that she was thought to be Black and then said to be something else? I’ll come back to it.
And I also don’t know about the submission page. I’m always on this side of it. I usually have to specifically seek out my submissions instead of getting an alert from Tumblr, but other than that, idk. Nobody else has mentioned anything so far, so it may just be one of those things where Tumblr doesn’t want you to be great, which happens to me sometimes whenever I try to tag certain homies or when I visit their page and my device moves super slow when it generally doesn’t do that to everyone else. Who knows with Tumblr?
Thanks for stopping by, though.
