Album Review: Kathryn Stott and Yo-Yo Ma - Merci

Though its title translates to thank you and Kathryn Stott and Yo-Yo Ma call Merci a “personal expression of gratitude,” the album is as much an elegy as anything.

The latest fruit borne from the long-running collaboration between pianist Stott and cellist Ma is dominated by the former’s “musical soulmate” Gabriel Fauré, who composed nine of Merci’s 17 pieces.

Atmospherically cohesive compositions from Lili Boulanger (“Nocturne”), Camille Saint-Saëns (“Samson et Dalila”), Nadia Boulanger (“Cantique”) and others round out the 70-plus minutes of sonic meditation.

Contemplative, yes, but never lulling, Merci is friendship and human connection in sound - always engaging, eminently comforting and, indeed, elegiac, perhaps in gratitude to those who came before.

Quincy Jones, nacido el 14 de marzo de 1933 en Chicago, había dado sus primeros pasos en el mundo del jazz tocando con Bunny Campbell y Preston Sandiford, haciendo un pequeño combo con Ray Charles y más tarde saliendo de gira con la orquesta de Lionel Hampton. En 1954 "Q" se traslado a Nueva York, donde hizo arreglos para Tommy Dorsey, Gene Krupa, Sarah Vaughan, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Dinah Washington, Cannonball Adderley... En 1956 tocó la trompeta en las seis primeras apariciones televisivas de Elvis Presley (acabó diciendo de él que era un racista, y de los Beatles que eran unos inútiles). Ese mismo año "Q" firmó con ABC-Paramount y sacó su primer LP en solitario propiamente dicho, "Go West, Man!". En 1957 se trasladó a París, ciudad con la que tuvo una especial relación de amor. Allí se matriculó en la prestigiosa escuela de música de Fontainebleau para estudiar composición y teoría musical con Nadia Boulanger y Olivier Messiaen. La Sra. Boulanger ha pasado a la historia como una de las profesoras de composición más influyentes del siglo XX, y tuvo como alumnos a Aaron Copland, George Gershwin y Philip Glass. En cuanto al compositor y profesor Messiaen, tuvo como alumnos a Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen y Iannis Xenakis. Jones tocó en el Olympia y se convirtió en director musical del sello Barclay, distribuidor francés de Mercury Records, nuevo sello de Quincy en 1958. En total pasó casi cinco años en Francia y a lo largo de la década estuvo en Europa varias veces de gira con diferentes grupos. En 58 comenzó también su colaboración con Frank Sinatra, para el que acabaría dirigiendo y arreglando el álbum "It Might As Well Be Swing", que contenía la célebre "Fly Me To The Moon".

Todo esto que acabo de contar (un resumen de varios artículos de internet) es sólo una pequeña parte de la vida de "Q" Jones, una aproximación a su figura muy incompleta y muy por encima.
