It should be impossible to make a brother dynamic more complicated and messed up than what happens between Finral and Langris or the Faust twins.
But it’s happened.
It’s an unholy fusion of BOTH situations.
What makes it worse is that I can’t even feel bad for one of the brothers (like the guy says "I've cared for my brother this whole time" but it's not enough to counteract the sabotage he pulls against his brother). And the other brother… He's a piece of work. Some shit happened to him and I feel bad for what happens in his backstory. But some of his actions/motivations are kinda... questionable.
To borrow what a friend said about them, they both need to be tranquilized and sent into counseling.

Nacht never thought he´d envy his brother. Not in the least. They were both so irritatingly different and he thought he hated him for that.
But there was so much more to hate than just that.
Morgen got along with everyone, he was the perfect son, the perfect knight, the perfect husband.
All Nacht could ever do was watch.
Watch him make you laugh, watch him take your hand, watch him take you away.
He wasn´t jealous, he didn´t have time for a relationship anyway.
Still, he couldn´t help himself.
Falling in love with you was the easiest and most dangerous thing he ever did, it hit him like the biggest amount of mana he ever felt and there was nothing he could do to make it stop.
No matter how hard he tried.
And he did.
He couldn´t love you, it wasn´t right… it wasn´t fair.
So he tried to distract himself, to think of anything else but you, his delinquent nature only helped a little bit with that.
He loved you from afar since that was all he could do. Nacht never made any moves on you, why would he?
You were with his brother and he made you happier than he ever could. It was good this way, it was supposed to be like this.
After all Morgen was the shining star of the family, of the capital. He was the pride of the gray deer.
He was strong, always had a smile on his face, he helped people and enchanted them with his warmth and kindness.
Nacht wasn´t anything like that.
No, he was the complete opposite, he was a disaster. Like a storm that wrecked chaos all throughout the capital, leaving people whispering about him.
Him and Yami were the two people the townsfolk feared the most, they always were up to something and it never was good.
They were good friends and Yami did well in distracting Nacht from his heartbreak he never was ready to admit.
Nacht first met you when him and Yami were thinking about more fun ways to use their magic. This time they were quite interested in stealing and running away from the magic knights.
Your food stand was just another one of their victims, but instead of scolding them like everyone else you just laughed with them.
You weren´t mad at him for sneaking past you like that, for using his magic to steal some items, no, instead you complimented him for it, saying how clever it was.
Nacht didn´t know what to say, for the first time in his life he was speechless.
Even Yami teased him about it, but he didn´t care. There were no witty remarks or lame attacks from him. He was so lost in your presence, he just wanted to consume all of it. You made him feel things that were so new and exciting to him, he never wanted to leave you.
“Oh, (Y/N), Morgen wants to talk to you. He´s waiting at your usual spot” Yami informed you and you nodded.
With those words everything came crashing down for him.
So that was why.
It made sense that if you knew his brother you´d also recognize him. That was why you weren´t mad.
And your name sounded so familiar, Morgen talked a lot about you, someone from his squad he admired.
It seemed like he got everything he wanted then.
It left Nacht feeling utterly dumb and empty.
Your usual spot… so it was true.
Nacht had only speculated that you two were together but now he knew it was true.
And what a dashing couple you were, perfect really. He had no right to interfere or even think about you that way. He never had and yet he did.
Morgen was everything he wasn´t. He was the one everyone loved, the one who got everything Nacht ever wanted.
Of course you wouldn´t care about him, especially not in that way. You just were nice to him because you knew his brother.
If you didn´t you´d just pretend as if he wasn´t there and then talk behind his back about what an abomination he was.
Like everyone else did.
Little did he know that you weren´t anything like that.
You knew Morgen from the magic knight exam and immediately made friends.
Morgen was a nice guy but he had his own issues as well. He never got along with his family, which is why he took the exam: to make them proud.
To show them that he could be someone like that. Someone to admire.
He just wanted to be like Nacht.
You were the one he confined in when it came to those things, he told you how he envied the nobles in your ranks who complained about getting married. He´d give anything for something like that to be considered a problem.
He talked a lot about his brother, making you incredibly curious. You wanted to meet him some day.
And so he invited you over for dinner with his family.
Though that wasn´t the first time you saw him.
No, in fact you saw Nacht every day. He was always on the market where you had your stand, with his friend causing all sorts of chaos.
He was quite something and you couldn´t help but smile every time you saw him.
He never really noticed you until that day though, or so you thought.
You were excited to be able to talk to him and sad that it only lasted a little while.
Because of your meeting with Nacht you were in high spirits when you talked to Morgen that day.
You two always trained together and would walk to the headquarters together.
It was nice having a friend like this, it seemed like it would last forever.
You told him that you met his brother and he was happy about that. Tonight would be the dinner as well so you would properly get to know each other.
When you arrived you could already tell that his parents didn´t like Morgen very much. Sure, they tried, but it was all pretend.
They were nice to you.
And you were so happy to be able to talk to Nacht, though he seemed distant.
Therefore you decided to start the conversation with him, asking him about his magic, that seemed to be the perfect topic.
His eyes glistened in excitement as he talked about his training, of course he left out any details but just being able to talk about this to someone who cared that wasn´t his parents, it was amazing.
You understood him, told him he was strong and admired him.
It was everything he ever wanted and so he asked about your magic, about your family and life.
The whole night went by so quickly, you felt like you talked about everything but at the same time you just wanted to talk so much more.
You noticed the way his eyes sparked with excitement and how gentle he would look at you at times, though maybe that was just your imagination.
You really hoped that wasn´t the case though, you wanted him to look at you that way all the time.
The same way you looked at him, full of adoration.
Morgen felt conflicted, of course he was happy that you got along with his brother but at the same time he hated how jealousy clouded his mind.
He was scared that Nacht would take you away from him, scared of all those things his parents were hiding from him.
It hurt him so much, he told you, about the secrets everyone was keeping from him, making him feel so frail, small and weak.
Sometimes his mind wandered too much, as it did now.
All he ever did was bother you with his problems and concerns, you were kind enough to show him everything when he was recruited to the squad and yet he used you like that.
He felt awful.
You deserved better, the best actually. And that was his brother.
Morgen never had any romantic feelings towards you, he just felt so guilty for stealing your time and wanting you all to himself, he didn´t want anyone else confining in you, he wanted it to be your secret, something only you two shared.
He just wanted to feel special and wanted even if it was only for a moment.
If only he had never invited you for dinner…
No, that wasn´t fair and he knew it. Of course he wanted to invite you, he knew that Nacht loved you even if he wasn´t ready to admit that for some reason he didn´t know.
All he wanted was you and his brother to be happy, and yes, be happy himself.
He wanted a happy family, to be accepted the way he was, he didn´t want to cause any more trouble than he already had.
His relationship to his brother wasn´t how it used to be and he hated how he seemed to be the cause for it.
Couldn´t he ever do something right?
The training and the missions without you were the only times he was able to have a clear mind, without any worries.
That´s why he engaged in them so much, to distract himself from his thoughts. Why did he even have them? He loved both of you and didn´t want to come in between your romantic love.
Maybe he just wanted you two to be together so that you finally gained the happiness you both denied each other.
He always found that stupid, why would one deny happiness to oneself? But then again, he did the very same thing.
But for him it was because he was raised that way, he wasn´t anything special, at least not to his family. So he tried to make up for being a failure for his family with being useful to the kingdom.
And it worked, so long as he had something to distract himself from.
Everyone needed a distraction.
Nacht needed a distraction from his feelings, not only for you but also for his brother. He couldn´t bear even thinking about hating him. Hatred was also what he felt for his parents, though that realization came too late for him.
At first he felt so loved when they showed him the chamber, told him he was the pride of the family. Finally he felt accepted, something he had longed for all his life.
However they weren´t accepting him, they were praising his magic and wanted him to continue the cursed family legacy, something so dark and forbidden it made even the trees shudder.
Knowing that both of their sons didn´t matter to them made Nacht angry, what did they ever do to be unloved? What else were they supposed to do to get the attention they never got as children?
Maybe they were more similar than Nacht had thought in the beginning.
It brought a sad smile to his face, however he was determined.
Determined to fix things, he knew what he wanted: you by his side and his brother not to hate him.
However his plan backfired and he let himself be taken over by his emotions, by his rage and frustration.
When he went to the secret chamber with his parents like every day, he lost control, the forbidden magic was too much for him and he really thought that this would be his end.
“Nacht! Take my hand, we need to get out of here!” Morgen called out for him, he just got back from a mission when he heard the explosion.
“No...it´s too late for me, just let me die” Nacht replied, desperation in his eyes.
“Are you crazy? You´re coming with us” you appeared behind his brother, out of breath from running with him. Yami was there too.
What was everyone doing here? Everyone he cared about. His dear brother, friend and… love.
Nacht had given up, on everything, but you three reaching your hands out for him, to save him? The mere thought that there was still salvation for him made him cry.
He took his brother´s hand and let himself be pulled from the rubble.
You three let the house burn and sat down on your usual spot, the hill where you had a good view of the capital.
The sun was already setting, it looked beautiful and more peaceful than it actually was.
Nacht still had the blood of his parents in his face, after noticing you took a piece of cloth and quietly wiped it off.
“Why did you save me? I´m a murderer… and a psychopath” he quietly said, chuckling darkly at the realization.
“You´re pretty weird but I wouldn´t go as far as calling you a psychopath” Yami thought out loud.
“What you did wasn´t wrong, Nacht” Morgen placed his hand on his brother´s shoulder.
“Not wrong? I murdered our parents in cold blood!” he exclaimed, staring at them in disbelief.
How could you all forgive him just like that?
“I didn´t even felt anything during it! Not a single thing, not regret, not sadness or anger. And I still don´t. I don´t regret it, I don´t feel anything. That´s not normal!” he cried out.
“I guess that makes us all psychopaths then” you stated, no judgment in your voice.
Nacht turned his head to face you, a puzzled look on his face.
“Your parents were shitty people, nobody is going to miss them. And we´re not going to judge you for something that was out of your control. We´re just glad that you´re still here with us, you suffered so much… and we didn´t realize it sooner” you said, your tone so warm… so familiar. He couldn´t help but feel calm whenever you spoke.
“To be fair I also just realized… I used to love them, I thought they loved me too. But that wasn´t true. They only used me” he said sadly, letting his head hang low, his hair falling in his face.
You exchanged some looks with the others and they stood up.
“Nacht, you´re going to join us in the gray deer, you´re too talented to just waste away. We won´t let that happen. We´ll keep looking out for each other. Always” Morgen announced and Yami also patted Nacht´s shoulder before they both left for the headquarters.
“Who´d even want a guy like me? You make it sound so easy… as if I can just join…” he shook his head, sighing.
“You still have a place in this world. The world needs you. You´ll fit in perfectly, we´re going to work as a team, we´re going to be unstoppable. Trust me, you´re going to like it there. And you´ll also see that we´re not as perfect as you think we are and that it´s okay that way, more than okay” you told him to which he finally looked up again.
You looked so beautiful, the sunlight only highlighted your magnificence, he couldn´t believe he was alone with you in such a setting, if only the circumstances were different.
He sighed, if he didn´t do it now, he´d never… he didn´t have much else to lose anyway.
“Can I do something stupid?” he quietly asked, averting his eyes yet again, his hands fiddling.
“Not if I do it first” you grinned and hugged him tightly.
“I´m not going to let you die or get hurt. I´ll always protect you. Because… I… want a guy like you, not anyone else, just you. I´m in love with you” you said quietly, but loud enough for him to hear.
You felt his body tremble against you as he started laughing, hugging you back even more.
“I… I think I´m dreaming!” he laughed and pulled away, smiling at you widely, his eyes full of adoration. Just like yours.
You took his hand into yours and he rested his head on your shoulder as you both watched the last rays of sunshine disappear.

chapter 9
chapter 9 of my knight au!
warnings: description of blood and injury
“Long live the Clover Kingdom! Long live King Novachrono!”
Julius cheered and clapped with the others as the light of dawn finally spread across the earth. The battlefield was illuminated after a long night. His Uncle, the king who had led them in this last battle, raised his sword above his head, the metal of his armor glinting. Julius’s father stood beside him, grinning at his son for a moment.
He was the type of person even Julius knew he could follow everywhere; and every time, that faith was confirmed. This battle against the Diamond kingdom could have gone south very quickly, but with just the Grey Deer and the King’s personal battalion fighting, they had expertly driven the enemy out with no casualties.
“Long live the King! Long live the King!”
The younger members of Julius’s squad shouted the loudest; this was the biggest battle of their lives, and it had been an overwhelming victory. Julius knew that Yami, William, Morgen, Nacht, and Patri would carry this high with them for the rest of their lives.
Some of those lives were cut short. None of them expected the second wave of Diamond forces to be so strong.
His uncle. His father. Everything changed so quickly.
I was never meant to be a king…
No… Julius had always thought he was meant to be captain. If his uncle were to die, then his father would take the throne. And if something happened to his father, the line would return to his uncle’s house… to the two children who would soon grow up to be capable leaders.
But it happened too quickly.
He was meant to be captain.
He trained and fought. He wielded a sword that no one else could carry.
Julius raised those kids like they were his own. They were like family. But that day, he was powerless to do anything but press forward and defend his kingdom, despite the deep gash in his chest and the blood of his children that were spilled.
Morgen… and Patri. Both of them befell cruel fates of different natures. And many more had to be sacrificed so the Kingdom would be victorious.
The pain in Julius’s heart told him it wasn’t worth it. Having this much blood on your hands just wasn’t worth it. If only he had died along with the others that day. If only the gash had been a little deeper.
Nevertheless, they won. Julius ignored the guilt and became King. A reluctant but benevolent king.
But even so… he still knew that wasn’t what he was meant to be. For five years, Julius searched for that answer. If he wasn’t meant to be captain, and if he wasn’t meant to be king, then what was the answer?
In the end, it seemed so simple. Julius was meant to make one person happy: Lisa.
But now, he wasn’t sure that was the answer either.
How could it be?
After all… because of me… she’s-
“JULIUS!”
Julius blinked, and suddenly he found himself standing outside, in a forest. The sun blinded him for a moment, and it took one more yell from behind to fully get his attention.
“JULIUS!”
Finally, awareness fully returned. Julius looked down at his hand, which was shaking as it held the small rapier. The blade was coated with blood, the red substance sliding off the tip and into the dirt. Dead bodies of the enemy were all around, but Julius felt no injuries of his own.
That’s right… I killed them.
He finally turned around, blinking as the scene came into focus. Sei was there, bent over Lisa’s body, his eyes wide. Sweat beaded his forehead as he fought the pain from the arrow in his shoulder, but he had to keep it together. His hands were covered in blood as he desperately pressed on the wound in her neck before glancing frantically back up at Julius.
“Hurry! She’s still alive!”
The rapier slipped out of Julius’s hand, and he was by Sei’s side before it hit the dirt.
Julius didn’t say anything, just knelt down and obeyed Sei’s every word. He admittedly had no idea how to deal with wounds of this caliber, and honestly he was afraid to open his mouth. The blood and dirt, the very sight of Lisa laying here fighting for her life; it was enough to make him sick. The panic he had relinquished before was creeping back up his neck.
No, no, no, no, no-
“Keep pressing!” Sei ordered, sitting back and tearing at the bottom of his shirt. “And don’t move the arrow! We can use it to stop up the bleeding with the help of gravity.”
Julius nodded, his hands pressing gently on the wound, staring at the back of Lisa’s head as Sei got to work stopping up the more shallow wounds on her back.
Shit… shit!
It was all Sei could do to keep his hands from trembling as he slowly stemmed the flow of blood.
I told Fuego I was going to bring her home safely… yet I encouraged her and let her fight! Stupid!! He grit his teeth, his vision wavering again as another pang radiated from his injury. I have to save her. Lisa, you’re not this weak, right?
“Sei… are you ok?”
Sei looked up to see Julius had directed his attention up to him. The man was clearly Not Okay, his eyes blank and hollow. The King glanced at the arrow in Sei’s shoulder. “I’m fine, it didn’t hit anything vital… I don’t think,” Sei told him, pointing down at Lisa again. “Focus!”
“R-Right.” Julius looked back down, his stomach turning. “The blood- it won’t stop-”
“Press harder!” Sei barked, quickly starting to rip another makeshift bandage. He was running out of material on his shirt. “You’re not going to hurt her.” Not any more than she already is. Fortunately, Sei knew enough to keep that last part to himself.
“Alright-” Julius winced as he obeyed, his mind going a bit woozy at the feeling under his hands. For a man who had both seen and shed much blood, he was dealing with this situation very badly. However, a bit of confidence spiked within him. Breathe… she’s alive… you can save her… Sei knows what he’s doing… we can save her… we can save her!
Right at that moment, both of them heard the sound of galloping horses coming towards them. Julius stiffened up, but Sei shook his head to diffuse the tension. “Their coming from our side of the border- it’s probably-”
Sei was right. A group of riders skidded to a stop a couple meters away, the one in the front immediately leaping off of his horse and sprinting towards them despite his heavy armor.
“SEI!!!”
Fuegoleon’s face was filled with both relief and shock at the sight of his beloved alive, albeit with an arrow in his shoulder. “And- King Julius!!! Are you alright-” But the shock strengthened when he saw the girl Sei and Julius were kneeling by, and all the color drained from his face. “L-Lisa?!”
Fuegoleon! Thank goodness! Julius looked behind him to see more soldiers behind him, most notably the masked face of William. The younger man opened his mouth to let out what seemed to be a sigh of relief; Although Julius always had trouble deciphering his emotions. Nevertheless, Julius managed to give his former student a smile before someone else screamed his name and grabbed his arm.
“JULIUS! What are you doing in the dirt- AND IS THAT BLOOD ALL OVER YOU!”
Of course, it was the constant thorn in Julius’s side, none other than his trusty advisor Marx. With surprising strength, Marx managed to drag Julius up and away from Lisa. “Wait! No-” Julius’s bloodied hand stretched out towards her body, but fortunately Fuegoleon immediately took his place at Sei’s side, and more soldiers gathered around the body to tend to the wounds.
“At least you’re safe… I was so worried when you went missing-” Julius looked down to see Marx nearly in tears despite the disapproving look on his face. “Honestly, how many enemies do you even have?”
“Any enemy of the kingdom,” Julius replied vaguely, looking back at the huddle, his anxiety mounting as he heard Fuegoleon talking, his tone grave.
“Sei… these wounds-” Fuegoleon gulped nervously, watching as Sei finally tackled the main source of blood. Lisa had yet to stir, but the slight heave of her back signified that she was indeed still alive.
“I know. The ones on her back are manageable, but even getting the arrow out of her neck is going to require more skill than I have…” Sei shook his head a little, his spirits plummeting. “We have to do what we can and head back to town now.”
“...right.” Fuegoleon nodded to his men, who started to bring a horse over. “Do we even have access to a doctor that good?”
Before Sei could answer, Julius cut in. “Take her to Owen. He’s the best doctor in this kingdom.”
“Doctor Owen? Are you sure?” Fuegoleon’s brow furrowed. “I thought his services were only reserved for royalty?”
“It’s fine, tell him I sent you.” Julius gave the captain a nod, forcing a smile on his face. “Lisa helped save me from my captors… I don’t want her to perish on my account.”
Don’t die don’t die don’t di-
“Sir! Are you sure?” Marx grabbed Julius’s sleeve, speaking in a hushed voice. “Fuegoleon is right, if people hear that Owen healed a commoner-”
“I don’t care.”
Marx fell silent, slowly looking up into his superior’s eyes. For a brief moment, he saw a glint in Julius’s very soul. But when he next spoke, his tone wasn’t angry, or even firm. He was scared.
Vulnerable.
“Marx… I love her. More than anything. She has to live.”
Despite the multitude of questions that surged in Marx’s chest, he bit his tongue. With a curt nod, Marx turned with Julius to watch as Fuegoleon gently lifted Lisa’s body up onto his horse while the others started cleaning Sei’s wound.
“...I’m sorry.”
Fuegoleon knew that Lisa couldn’t hear him, but for some reason he had to whisper those words. The girl was safe on his horse, and he held her limp body steady as the group raced back to the castle as fast as they could. He glanced over at Sei, who was well enough to ride on his own beside his husband. The two locked eyes for a moment, and Sei immediately picked up on Fuegoleon’s guilt. The man’s lips twitched into a rare, comforting smile.
“It’ll be okay, Fuego.” Sei’s grip tightened on his reins, surprising Fuegoleon with the confidence in his voice. “She fought well… we saved the King together. She’ll get through this, too. You guys arrived just in time to do that much.”
Slowly, Fuegoleon found himself smiling as well.
“Right… she will. We all will!”
He looked forward again, the confidence of a squad captain coming back into his movements, as he lead the charge forward like he had always done.

I apologise it has taken me a bit to circle round to reading this, but oh my goodness, Erika, this was beautiful!! 💙 I absolutely adore Josele, and you write the Faust brothers so, so well. I'm crying and struggling to wrangle my thoughts, but I'm going to try to list a few things I loved below:
Nacht stealing from the commoners even though he's a noble! The irony of that never really dawned on me until I read your story, and now I just can't get the image of "Little Lord Faust the Wannabe Hoodlum" out of my head so thank you for that! It's wonderful!
MORGEN!! I just about squealed when he suddenly appeared. I probably should've been expecting it, but I was still surprised. What a sweetheart! I absolutely loved his "he’s not a bad guy, really.”
Her father calls her Joey!! That's such a cute nickname for her!
Morgen doesn't even hesitate to offer to go look for her. Again, what a sweetheart. I love him!
“Josele doesn’t go looking for trouble. You do that for her!” --HA! I actually laughed aloud when I read this. It's so delightful and paints such a clear picture of the kind of relationship she and Nacht have.
“'I love you, Nacht. It just shows in a different way.' It should’ve been illegal to say something as cruel and kind as that." OUCH! I felt that like a punch to the gut (in the best way possible, of course), but there is something so tragically beautiful about it especially the way you've written that scene which leads me to...
I love the style of your writing in this piece. These beautiful little vignettes and poetic anecdotes create such a beautiful impression of who all the characters are and how they're feeling, and I have such clear picture of who Josele is just from Nacht's memories, perception of, and feelings towards her.
Nacht wanting to beat up the gossiping people was great! So much like him too! This is a little off topic, but I wonder: do you think Josele and Finesse would be friends? It's my understanding that they probably wouldn't run in the same circles at the moment (is that right?), but I suppose I was just thinking that maybe some particularly nasty people say similar (and entirely untrue) things about Finesse toying with two noble brothers, so she might be able to relate and offer sympathy to poor Josele. (Mainly, I just feel bad for poor Josele and would like her to be given some kind sympathy and support). Maybe in your future universe, when Josele marries Nacht and Finesse marries Finral?
That change in Josele after losing Morgen was so palpable--just very well written. That "I couldn’t do anything for him. My love wasn’t enough to save him" especially was heart-wrenching.
"Now, the only thing star-like about her was how far out of reach she was." --this might be my favourite line.
I just want to cry about that ending. Ouch! I'm struggling with my words a little bit right now, but gosh that hurt, especially that "shadow of who she should be" line. I'm going to cry now, but really all of the kudos for making me care so much about Josele and Nacht's relationship with her in only around 3500 words. I'm super invested now and very, very sad. I'm so happy to know that they eventually work things out!
The last thing I'll mention is that I absolutely adore the delicate way you've written Nacht. He is still his curt, blunt, somewhat surly and somewhat misanthropic "wannabe hoodlum" self, but there is such a depth to his emotions the way you've written him and a certain softness in how much he cares about Morgen and Josele. And when you dug into some of his insecurities and those conflicting feelings of being happy for Morgen and Josele but also a little bit jealous of them and, then, those more guilty feelings not only surrounding Morgen's fate but also at not being able to do anything to help Josele and losing her as well...ashsdhshdhsd!! I wish I had better words than a keyboard smash, but I'm just so blown away by this other side of Nacht that you've really helped me to see through your writing. It's really wonderful, and I definitely have a new appreciation for him now thanks to you!
Thank you so much for writing this! It was so tragic but so beautifully written, and it was definitely worth waiting until I had enough time and energy to properly devote to really reading it. I loved it and am definitely looking forward to reading more about Josele, Morgen, and Nacht in the near future! (After I make a full emotional recovery from this piece of course). Cheers, dear!!💙
What Once Was
She was once the stars in the night sky. She shined every way you looked at her. She was bright without being overwhelming. Her goodness only showed more if she was met with darkness. Just like the stars, it was impossible to count the ways that made her good. That made her lovable. That made her.
Her smile, alive with emotion in every instance of it. Never did she fake it or shy away from showing it. Her smile lit up whatever room she entered. Whether it be accompanied by laughter or tears or a teasing barb, that smile was beautiful, hers alone.

"Need to be bothered more eh?" 😏 What are your thoughts about Nacht, and Yami and Morgen, in the latest chapters. Especially with Nacht going "I don't deserve to be saves because I'm the reason why Morgen died"
Yes! Visitation in the inbox!
Hello Laura! And thank you for answering my plea for attention my call to action!
Before we get into the real meat of this answer, I have to get something out of the way.
William coming in with the mistletoe for the mistlebro to fight the mistlefoe.
That is all. Moving on.
Spoilers ahead.
Nacht, Yami, and Morgen.
The short version is that the most recent leaks/chapter re-establishes stuff about these three that was either directly told or heavily implied.
Nacht sees Morgen as everything he never was and never can be. Meanwhile, he sees/projects his shameful past onto Yami.
Yami was friends with both the twins. With Nacht, he could run wild. With Morgen, he seemed to mellow out and find his sense of justice.
And the way I see/understand it, Morgen teaming up with Yami is what he wanted with Nacht.
If you think about it, Yami's position in the trio's dynamic is sad as he acts as a stand-in brother for Morgen and Nacht because the twins couldn't understand each other. Nacht chose to distance himself from Morgen and thus never saw that Morgen cared about him. And even if Morgen wanted to be close, he didn't know how to approach Nacht.
(Side tangent: Morgen, I love you but... You really couldn't think of anything to bond over but work? You thought harassing Nacht time and time again would convince him? You are aware enough to know that Yami vibes with Nacht more than you can but you aren't aware enough to think that maybe it has something to do with their common ground of the stuff they like to get up to? Ask to hang out with Nacht just as brothers. Work up to a big ask like joining the Magic Knights.)
But, again, that's stuff we were able to gather from previous chapters.
The new stuff is what Nacht and Yami truly think regarding each other.
With Nacht, it's not that he wants to get away from Yami. He wants Yami to stay away from him. Nacht sees himself as someone who hurts others and thus doesn't want to cause Yami more grief after what happened to Morgen. He really is weighing himself with a lot of unnecessary guilt. And with this in mind, Nacht being a Black Bull makes sense. If Nacht really wanted to get away from Yami, he could've just teleported away and not looked back. But instead Yami is actively keeping Nacht close. I imagine Nacht might've tried to avoid joining the squad but Yami hunted him down.
And although Nacht said he hated Yami, now that Yami's back in front of him, they're able to chat like they probably used to. Nacht can't deny it that Yami is still his friend. And he's probably relieved about it.
As for Yami, he's looking to out-stubborn Nacht. He sees Nacht as a dear friend, probably because he was Yami's first friend in Clover. Julius was a friendly figure but would've been more a mentor/caretaker. Nacht was a peer with who Yami could casually hang out with. Yami surely wouldn't forget someone who didn't immediately push him away. So Yami won't push Nacht away either. Even if Yami doesn't know the full story behind Morgen's death, seeing Nacht's remorse, he would be able to tell that Nacht doesn't deserve any more blame than what he puts on himself.
And now, when Nacht is throwing his life away, Yami steps in. Yami says he doesn't need a reason to save a friend but I would say that Nacht being Yami's friend is the reason to save him. He lost one friend before and won't lose another.
Beautiful stuff right there. The character who wants to be hated and then the person who refuses to do so.
But...
Can I say that the whole "I don't deserve to be saved because I'm the reason why Morgen died" is basically the idea I had for Nacht and Josele's drama. Nacht's actions led to Morgen's death and Josele's curse, thus Nacht thinks himself unworthy of the love Josele still has for him. I cannot believe Tabata stole my idea!/j
I basically predicted Nacht's big hang up! That being: Nacht sees Morgen's death not only as a sign that he's evil and unforgivable but also as a crime against the people that cared about Morgen. He can't forgive himself and believes he shouldn't be forgiven by anyone.
I'm partly filled with utter glee that my understanding and portrayal of Nacht is kinda basically canon. Tabata could've gone the route of having Nacht claim that Morgen's death isn't Yami's problem and should stay out of Nacht's business. But no, Nacht considers the other people in Morgen's life and thus burdens himself with more guilt.
However, another part of me is pissed about how Tabata is going about it. It looks like Yami's little pep talk is all it takes to get Nacht out of his funk. Like, shut up Tabata! Don't take away Nacht's self-loathing, that's one of the things that makes him pathetically endearing!/lh
Then again, I can drag out the guilt and pain and self-loathing myself.
TL;DR...
Yami is basically the third Faust brother. Nacht and Yami rekindle their friendship and it's all beautiful.
Oh, and Tabata plagiarized me./j
