Blog Post 30: Final Projects: END OF WEEK 4 

This blog marks the end of the fourth week and discusses the progress made, as well as the inspirations and interesting works I came across. While this week was extremely busy and left me with little time for relaxation, I still managed to achieve my primary goals and find a few sources of inspiration that fueled my creative process. 

Another extremely busy week with barely enough time for relaxation and pleasure, which marks the start of an unfortunate pattern. Despite the lack of time for relaxation, I was fortunate to have enough time to accomplish all of my primary goals that I set out for this week, including the design, modelling and texturing of several new assets for project 1 and 2 while also finalizing the aesthetics and texture design for the generator in project 2. 

In the little free time I had available, I browsed the internet to search for other individual works related to my current projects and found some extremely interesting and inspiring artists, whose work gave me a lot of ideas in terms of designing, modelling, texturing and lighting. 

Inspirations for my work 

Tomasz Kawecki, FrostPunk sawmill texturing 

Tomasz Kawecki, one of the talented artists behind Frostpunk, was responsible for texturing the models in 11-bit Studios’ iconic game. His ability to depict the degradation of metallic structures with remarkable realism stands out. 

His techniques for applying dirt and mud textures in high-use areas, alongside heavy rusting in abandoned sections, provided invaluable insights for my texturing approach in Project 2. Incorporating these elements into my designs has allowed me to enhance the authenticity of my steampunk-inspired generator. 

Bill Zhang, Secrets to Successful Concept Art. 

Bill Zhang’s ArtStation course, Secrets to Successful Concept Art, is a masterclass on blending 3D modeling software like Blender or Maya with Photoshop to produce captivating conceptual art. This tutorial resonated deeply with me as it highlights one of my long-term goals: to master Photoshop in combination with 3D modeling tools. Zhang’s efficiency in modeling and his expert use of Photoshop for creating polished concept art remind me why I was drawn to this industry in the first place.  

Once I complete my current projects, I plan to dedicate time to learning these techniques, allowing me to revisit and improve my earlier works with a refined skillset. 

Maria Yue, Not Manchester- SteamPunk / Victorian Environment 

Maria Yue’s work, particularly her piece titled Not Manchester, is an exceptional example of how lighting and composition can transform an environment. This steampunk-inspired artwork captivated me with its meticulously designed cityscape, which blends Victorian aesthetics with steampunk elements. 

Her mastery of lighting—creating depth and drawing the viewer’s attention—is something I aim to emulate. Maria’s other works, such as Echo and Cine Lily, also demonstrate her incredible ability to build atmosphere using lights and shadows. Inspired by her techniques, I plan to incorporate similar lighting strategies in my final scenes for both projects. 

Final Thoughts: 

Although this week was packed with challenges, it brought significant progress and invaluable lessons. Discovering the works of talented artists like Tomasz Kawecki, Bill Zhang, and Maria Yue has not only motivated me to elevate my craft but has also given me practical insights to implement in my projects. 

As I move into the next phase, I aim to continue refining my skills and pushing the boundaries of my creativity while finding a balance between work and relaxation to maintain momentum.
