It has to be said

Let’s cut the bullshit. You can’t sit there and preach about how "wrong" it is for someone to shift into a BIPOC identity while you’re out here shifting into some "fictional" race and acting like it’s all good.

Newsflash, asshole: It’s the same damn thing. Shifting into any race—real or fictional—comes with its own set of cultural, historical, and ethical baggage. If you’re gonna throw shade at someone for exploring a BIPOC identity, then you better be ready to throw shade at yourself for shifting into that elf, Na’vi, or whatever the fuck else you’re fantasizing about.

Here’s the deal: Whether you’re shifting into a BIPOC identity to understand a different version of yourself or diving into some fantasy race that’s basically a watered-down version of real-world cultures, you’re engaging with the same concepts. The only difference is that one makes you uncomfortable because it’s closer to home. But if you think you can hide behind a “pretty pink bow” of fiction to justify your shifts, then you’re just fooling yourself.

You want some examples? Here they are:

1. The Na'vi from "Avatar": The Na'vi are a blatant allegory for Indigenous peoples who have been fucked over by colonization and cultural erasure. Their culture, spirituality, and even physical appearance are deeply inspired by various Indigenous cultures. Shifting into a Na'vi and then having the nerve to criticize someone for shifting into a BIPOC identity is straight-up hypocrisy. You’re enjoying the "noble savage" aesthetic while turning a blind eye to the real-world struggles that inspired this fictional race.

2. X-Men (Mutants): The mutants in the X-Men universe are a metaphor for marginalized groups, particularly racial minorities and the LGBTQ+ community. They experience discrimination, fear, and oppression, just like BIPOC people in the real world. Shifting into a mutant identity and then shitting on someone for exploring a BIPOC identity? That’s some next-level hypocritical bullshit. You’re playing out a power fantasy of fighting against oppression while ignoring the very real struggles that others are trying to explore and understand through their shifts.

3. Twi’leks and Other Star Wars Aliens: Twi’leks and other alien species in "Star Wars" often have exaggerated features that mirror ethnic stereotypes, and their treatment in the narrative often reflects colonial attitudes. Shifting into these aliens while criticizing someone for shifting into a different race is absurd. You’re embodying a fictional race that’s a clear stand-in for real-world marginalized groups while trying to police how others choose to explore their own identities.

4. The Fremen from "Dune": The Fremen are depicted as desert dwellers with a deep connection to their land and a fierce resistance to imperialism, drawing heavily from Middle Eastern and North African cultures. Shifting into this race while bashing someone for shifting into a BIPOC identity is a prime example of enjoying the exoticism of another culture without acknowledging its real-world significance.

2. Elves in Fantasy Literature: Elves are depicted with exaggerated European features—tall, slender, sharp, angular faces—basically the "Aryan" beauty ideal cranked up to eleven. The romanticization of these features, while totally ignoring their roots in racist purity movements, is downright disturbing.If you’re shifting into an elf while slamming someone for shifting into a BIPOC identity, you’re perpetuating a fucked-up double standard. You’re engaging in a fantasy that upholds white-centric beauty while denying someone else the right to explore a version of themselves that aligns with a BIPOC identity.

The real issue isn’t about whether it’s right or wrong to shift into a different race; it’s about the double standard you’re applying. If you think it’s okay to shift into some fantasy race but not a BIPOC identity, then you’re the one with the fucked-up priorities. Shifting is all about exploring different versions of yourself, whether that’s through race, species, or whatever. So, stop being a fucking hypocrite and either accept it all or shut the hell up.

Next time you wanna criticize someone for race shifting, take a look at your own damn shifts. If you’re doing the same thing under the guise of “fantasy,” then you’re just as guilty of the shit you’re trying to call out. Stop acting like one is more acceptable than the other. Either own your shit across the board or get off your high horse.

This kind of hypocrisy shows that you’re more comfortable with the idea of exploring different identities when they’re wrapped in a "pretty pink bow" of fiction, but you balk at the idea of someone exploring the full spectrum of human experience, including the struggles and strengths that come with being BIPOC.

No more excuses. It’s time to face the reality of what you’re doing and start thinking critically about the implications of your shifts. Stop hiding behind the fantasy and start acknowledging the real-world context of the identities you’re exploring.

A few random Avatar thoughts I’ve had recently

I’m been thinking about some things and I just want to put them out and see what everyone else thinks about them

First this is more of a headcanon but I was reading the Avatar cookbook and I kinda just laughed at the R.D.A section. I know the Avatar cookbook is full of the vegan recipes they had on set.I get that. But the R.D.A section reads : they serve up familiar foods with a vegan twist to respect the worlds limited resources. I just don’t buy that. The colonizers and planet destroyers are not respecting shit. So I had the idea that they clone meat. They already have cloning tech down, and cloning meat is something we already have today. It’s just not at a point where it could be mass produced. But by Avatar time? Absolutely. So that’s my headcanon. The R.D.A clones their meat. A really minor thing but I’m sure my fellow writers will agree minor details are just the things you get hung up on.

But now a bigger idea I’ve been thinking about. I’ve been fascinated recently by the physical state of the recoms when they woke up. By that I mean I’ve been thinking a lot about how exactly did they all wake up with their tattoos and hairstyles from their past lives? Because a clone wouldn’t just wake up like that. So my next thought was just oh it would have happened after they were decanted but before they woke up. Except:

You can clearly see they’re decanted like that. And that got me thinking about the state of Jake’s Avatar when it was decanted. I’m thinking that since the Avatar was organial made for Tommy there wasn’t a reason to put Jake’s tattoos on him. But at the bare minimum you’d need something to braid the hair around the neural whip because as we see on baby Neteyam and Kiri, Na’vi aren’t just born with a full braid. It has to be grown out. And yet Jake’s avatar had a perfect braid inside of the pod. So I’m thinking theirs some kind of little bot inside of the pod that’s used to care for the avatars. They’re a million dollars a pop so I’d think you’d want a bot that can do things like blood test or if a clone isn’t forming properly, do minor surgeries control by a doctor. But it can also be used for more aesthetic things as well like hair styling and tattooing so the Avatar driver can just wake up and go without having to mess with too much.

The recoms were obviously made to look as close to their past selves as possible so they wouldn’t “lose themselves” like Jake, Grace, Norm, and the other drivers all did. Z has full sleeves, Quaritch has his military tattoos. If you look closely Lyle’s recom has a faint shadow of hair on his head. So his new body doesn’t have male patterned baldness but his human body did so it was replicated on his clone. The R.D.A was so detailed with all these things - except Quaritch. Because his recom doesn’t have his most noticeable feature, the thing he shows off to Jake in the first movie- his scars. I don’t think it would have been hard to replicate them either. With my “little bot” theory as I’ll call it, you could simply use a laser scalpel to replicate the scars long before the clone is decanted so they have plenty of time to heal. But they didn’t. And I’m really scratching my head as to why?

Is it a visual cue to the audience that he is in fact not the same man as before? Or that this new version of him has the capacity to grow past the sins of his previous life. Did the R.D.A intentionally leave off the scars so he could be “pretty again” even though Quaritch himself said that he liked them? But why would they even care about something like that when the whole purpose of making them look like their human selves is to ground them in that life and make it harder from them to identify with the Na’vi despite looking exactly like them now. They omitted Quaritch’s most distinguished feature for what! 

These are just thoughts kicking around in my head. I really want to know what everyone else thinks so please share your ideas 💙

heeyyyyy remember these dumdums hahaaaa the Sully family took over most of my mental real estate after WoW but I haven’t completely forgotten my silly OCs, figured I should give them another doodle now that I’m more competent with drawing Na’vi hrh

Neyntìsti’s color scheme...I decided to experiment with it a bit to see if I could bring it closer to what a leucistic Na’vi would realistically look like with the “washed-out” cyanin...this is something I considered when first designing her but I struggled to get an aesthetic I was satisfied with compared to the melanin-based one inspired by leucistic Earth animals. Buuuut I thought since it’s been a while I’d have another go and see if I could make it work. I’m not sure I’m 100% sold on it yet...I still kinda prefer the aesthetic of the melanin-based one as it feels more cohesive and I liked how her eyes popped with it. However, I don’t dislike this cyanin one per se; the satisfaction of “accuracy” is certainly nice for my nerd brain. I suppose it comes down to deciding what I value more for this character: accuracy or aesthetic. Hmm. We’ll see.

Speaking of Neyntìsti, I have been wanting for quite a while now to change her name...I created these characters extremely early in my learning of the language...and the time I thought it was fun to name her “light-colors-anger” since Toothless and Light Fury were an jumping-off-point that first inspired these two characters (though they’ve developed more into their own thing over time) but now that I’m more familiar with the language, it’s just become kinda distracting, the idea that someone’s parents would actually stick the word “anger” in their kid’s name, even with my excuse of “the stressed syllable is swapped” ^^; I’ll keep the Neyn part because I mean. look at her. but I’m gonna change the tìsti to something else. Haven’t decided exactly what just yet but I’m brainstormin’.

...Se’txelu, meanwhile, is fine lol. I’m messing around a bit with his outfit for funsies but overall I’m still quite satisfied with him; no need for any major changes haha

neteyam is the ultimate aesthetic, educated and sophisticated king for liking tumblr by himself ✊🏻 (no shade to lolo though). like ‘reya, he also has a clean, aesthetically-pleasing layout, but it’s more masculine.

username: just sounds cool, y’know? he also works his ass off and is “burnt out” after all (perfection and golden-childism ain’t easy), and eclipse is just a time of day neteyam really enjoys where he gets to relax and spend time for himself. 

neteyam doesn’t complain much in real life, or let out a lot of his feelings. tumblr is like his peaceful, personal, private corner where he can speak his mind, which he really appreciates. 

i can see him reblogging and following fashion accounts that he likes, as well as occasionally posting a little ramble. ‘teyam’s page is scattered with some little thoughts and feelings here and there between reblogs of cool streetwear clothing and artistic photos/photography (for human neteyam).

I have a question about Spider, apart from who’s his mother.

If he lived in the lab, right? With Norm and the other avatar users and scientists, why does he look like he hasn’t showered once in his life?

Like, Norm seems pretty well groomed and he looks like he keeps up his basic hygiene, just like any other scientist around, and Spider supposedly lives with them. Why does he look like the type of person to not know what a shower is?

Like, I understand he stays with the Na’vis for long periods of time and everything, but don’t they have showers in the lab or something?

No hate to Spider or anything (or maybe yes, idk how I feel about him, even though I watched the movie two times already). It is a genuine question that haunts me.

I understand the “Tarzan aesthetic” they tried to give him, but if he lives with humans on a daily basis, why doesn’t he have showered in his whole existence?

So I know this may be “controversial” but I’m so sick of seeing people complain about the new Avatar movie and try to cancel it over the most ridiculous things.

For starters… they are 10FT tall blue aliens with 3 fingers living on an alien planet that takes about 5 years to get too, from the future. How are people trying to make this about the human race living today in our times?

People complaining because Jake has dreadlocks… it’s called ✨Na’vi culture✨ on earth it may be an African cultural thing, but they aren’t on earth, they are on Pandora where the Na’vi are an alien race that believe it or not, do in fact have their own culture. Besides they also have a giant braid that has stuff inside of it…

People mad because they think Jake is trying to be “indigenous” when he’s “just some white dude pretending” like bro… it’s called acculturation and assimilation. What else would you expect him to do? It’s like getting mad at a European trying to embrace an Asian culture because his partner and kids are Asian and live in an asian country…

And finally, the people who are for some reason getting triggered because Avatar 3 will have an element of the new Ash tribe and Fire Na’vi saying that James Cameron is “copying” Avatar the last air bender. There are so many ways to break this down but here’s two: 1 is about an alien planet with 10FT tall blue people that have glowing dots on their skin, the other is about a bunch of people controlling elements… (essentially) how are people making connections here?

The other way to break this down is: Pandora is a lot like earth, it’s has ✨biomes✨ and different ✨environments✨ right. So there’s this thing called ‘adapting to your environment’. The Omatikaya is Forest Na’vi which is aliens that live in the forest. The Metkayina is Reef and Sea Na’vi which are aliens that live by and in the sea… the fire Na’vi (from what I’ve heard) live close to or in a volcano… they don’t control the elements they simply live in environments to which they have adapted to and hence the reason they are given different names.

From the sounds of things Pandora has reefs, forests, mountains, deserts, snow(?) and is again just like earths structure and environments. Which makes it so much better than all these other futuristic outer space movies where there are planets that seem to be only 1 biome and earth is the ONLY planet that has multiple.

On earth, people who live or come from Europe are called European. People who live or originate from Africa, are called African. People who originate from Asia, are called Asian. On Pandora, Na’vi who come from the forest are the Omatikaya people. Na’vi who come from the reefs or oceans are the Metkayina people.

So before you all start raising your pitchforks and torches claiming “cUltUraL apProPriation” about 10FT tall blue aliens from outer space, take a second to realise how dumb it sounds. If you didn’t like the movie, that’s okay, but don’t ruin it for the rest of us. It seems today that no one can enjoy something without someone criticising it and ruining it for the ones who just want to watch a cool movie with beautiful aesthetics and nice visuals…

To anyone who’s made it this far into the rant, I appreciate it. To those who don’t agree, I don’t care but feel free to disagree all you want, and to those who agree, again I don’t really care but cool.
