"UPS 2751 Heavy, contact Departure 125.125, good day." "Contacting Departure, UPS 2751 Heavy." This photo of N578UP climbing out of DFW shows nicely the variable camber Krueger flaps on the leading edges of the 747-400's wing. The variable camber Kruger flap (VCK) is unique as far as I know to the 747 family. Krueger flaps are one of the simplest of mechanical leading edge devices. They offer a high lift coefficient for such a simple device but it has a narrow optimal angle of attack range. A recirculation bubble forms behind the flap and it increases the camber of the wing as air thinks the bottom of the bubble is now the bottom of the wing surface. It makes the wing act as if it is fatter, improving low speed performance. The first type of Krueger flap is the simple type which is just a flat panel hinging outward from the lower surface of the wing. This is seen in the 727's wing and the inboard sections of the 707. The folding bullnose Krueger is a further refinement which adds a folding rounded section to the "nose" of the flap. This improves the flap's performance over a range of angles of attack. The inboard section of the 737, for example, has this type of Krueger flap. The 747 evolved the folding bullnose Krueger flap and by use of flexible fiberglass panels and four-bar linkages, takes a flat flap when stowed and literally bends the flap panel into a curved shape upon deployment. It is complex, but lighter than a traditional slat system and was kept on the 747 right right on into the 747-8 as redesigning the wings for a slat flap was not necessary. The 747's VCK also introduces a slot behind the deployed flap which improves its performance. You can see the slot in my photo. #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #DFW #DallasFortWorth #Texas #airport #planespotting #instaplane #Boeing #747 #UPS #N820AL #N578UP #instagramaviation #splendid_transport #instaaviation #aviationlovers #aviationphotography #flight #AvGeeksAero #AvgeekSchoolofKnowledge #AvGeekNation (at DFW Airport) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZhNh6BuWyx/?utm_medium=tumblr

"American 7 Heavy, RNAV to BPARK, Runway 18-Left, cleared for takeoff." "RNAV to BPARK, 18-Left, American 7 Heavy, good day." N820AL, a Boeing 787-9, powers up for its takeoff roll on 18L at DFW on a hazy morning bound for Kahului Airport on Maui. The GEnx (General Electric NeXt generation) engine first ran in March 2006 with a first flight on GE’s 747-100 testbed in February 2007. It is the replacement in the GE turbofan portfolio for the CF6-80C2, the ultimate evolution of the CF6 engine that debuted on the DC-10 in 1971. The GEnx is an advanced evolution of the GE90 turbofan used on the Boeing 777 that features a high pressure compressor (the core) based on the smaller core of the GE90-94B variant used on the 777-200ER. The GEnx is used on both the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the 747-8F and 747-8 Intercontinental With significant aerodynamic and materials improvements, the GEnx engine has a 15-20% better fuel burn than the CF6-80C2. Since its production launch, the GEnx engine has become the fastest selling engine in General Electric’s history. Much of the advanced technology and materials science that went into the development of the GEnx engine is also used on the CFM LEAP-X engine of the 737 MAX family. Much of the GEnx technology also crossed over back into the GE90 program in the development of the GE9X engine used on the Boeing 777-9. #avgeek #aviation #aircraft #planeporn #KDFW #DFW #DallasFortWorth #Texas #airport #planespotting #instaplane #Boeing #787 #AmericanAirlines #N820AL #Dreamliner #instagramaviation #splendid_transport #instaaviation #aviationlovers #aviationphotography #flight #AvGeeksAero #AvgeekSchoolofKnowledge #AvGeekNation (at DFW Airport) https://www.instagram.com/sentinelchicken/p/CYrIe2Psuy3/?utm_medium=tumblr
