so the fucking jesuits show up in, whatever, 1549. they jesuit about for a bit, teaching, learning nheengatú, etc
the governor of brazil (tomé de sousa) is just like "yeah idk do what you want, just don't go living too far inland bc we can't save you" but basically leaves them alone
the jesuits get a couple years of success, and nóbrega (head jesuit) is all excited bc he's pretty sure he can convert the continent
then the jesuits start pushing their luck (going inland without interpreters, being annoying to people they shouldn't annoy, etc) and a bunch of them get killed
and the jesuits say NO WAIT this is actually GOOD they are MARTYRS
except nóbrega is starting to get frustrated and annoyed, not just with the autochthonous but also with the portuguese who are just basically rollicking in sin and could not give less of a fuck of what the jesuits say
so then when the governor dies (tomé de sousa, then some other guy who i don't think really counts?) fucking mem de sá shows up
and mem de sá hates everyone, especially the autochthones
so mem says "ok cool we tried it your way, we're going to just start making wars "the likes of which have never been seen before"
and that fucking coward shitface nóbrega, old, sickly, frustrated
the fucking JESUIT nóbrega, who took a VOW to "conquer oneself and to regulate one's life in such a way that no decision is made under the influence of any inordinate attachment" and follow the teachings of christ
says "cool, let's kill people. and whoever we don't kill, we can enslave."
