Mid-Year Book Freak Out
Yoinked from @profiterole-reads
Number of books you’ve read so far: depends how you count, but Storygraph has me at 148, which includes 20-something DPP short stories. (like a hundred of these are graphic novels/manga/manhua/manwha, they're quick...)
Best book you’ve read so far in 2024: I can't pick one. Best novel: The Imperial Uncle by Da Feng Gua Guo. Best non-fiction: Fun Home by Alison Bechdel or Genderqueer by Maia Kobabe. Best graphic novel...extremely hard choice. I'm gonna go with Brooms by Jasmine Walls, I really liked that one. or The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich by Deya Muniz.
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2024: I have no idea how to define "sequel" in any way relevant to what I read, sorry.
New release you haven’t read yet but want to: Qiang Jin Jiu by Tang Jiuqing.
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: the last books of Thousand Autumns and Guardian.
Biggest surprise favorite new author (debut or new to you): Da Feng Gua Guo (new to me)
Newest fictional crush: Jing Chengjun.
Book that made you cry: I can't recall that any of these made me cry??? I almost never cry at media, sorry.
Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received): Beautiful as in...literally physically attractive? idk this isn't something I pay attention to much, they're all just books? I do love the art in the 2ha English releases.
Book that made you happy: several of the above, and a whole lot of others, let's go with Cheer Up! Love and Pom Poms by Crystal Frasier, it was super cute.
What books do you need to read by the end of the year?: so many, I'm trying to get through my entire TBR. Next up is three Katherine Addison books starting with The Goblin Emperor, and then after that is Rose and Renaissance by Zhi Chu. That's the next 7, after that I'm not sure what's next, maybe The Fall of the House of Tatterly by Shanna Miles? There's like 15 books on my TBR (there's also The Missing Piece by Kun Li Wei You, Babel by R. F. Kuang, The City We Became by N. K. Jemisin, Venus of Delta by Anais Nin, and probably a couple others I'm forgetting)., and I've got pre-orders that'll be coming in too. And there's the library books, with more there every time I go. oops. too many books.

The Husky And The White Cat Shizun With Their Baobei | 2HA Fanfic
Chapter 3
Every novel has a beginning and an ending, as well as mistakes during the drafting process. You were the mistake. After all, in your past lifetime,
Even with your existence, nothing has changed. In fact, you probably made it worse for both Chu Wanning and yourself. And if someone were to ever go up to your past self and tell you, "You're going to be reincarnated into a blood-thirsty novel filled with continuous angst," you would probably only laugh their comments off.
But now look at your current state; you can no longer laugh anymore; the joke has turned real.
"That should be enough herbs for today. The rest of the afternoon, I can explore the forest," you said to yourself.
You looked at the stack of herbs you collected from the forest; it filled the wooden bucket to the brim. There weren't many rare herbs around your original area due to your constant presence. So you ended up venturing away from the village, stopping near a river. It was also because you were thirsty and tired from collecting all the herbs. But of course, you weren't that foolish; you made sure to keep a dagger on you just in case of any danger.
Ever since you got reborn again, you have repeated the same activities that you do in the village. There was this role: the herb collector. The original owner's body was that of the herb collector of the village. All villages have their own herb collector; those techniques are often passed down from generations or taught by the previous herb collector. Ying Qin was the previous herb collector of the village.
During your second past life, you remembered her telling you about her childhood. Ying Qin's own father taught her the skills when she was young, and she always enjoys watching from afar as her own father picked those herbs from the soil. Later on, Ying Qin taught the original Y/N about it until you came along, resulting in Ying Qin having to'retaught' it again. Even despite that, Ying Qin never complains.
Ying Qin was born from the former male herb collector and a female villager from the other village. The two lovers meet under the guides of fate and fall in love upon one's rescue. It was a simple love story—one that you didn't give your full attention to.
In the past, once you realized that you had been reincarnated into a novel, you paid more attention to thinking about how you would interact with the main characters and how to become a disciple of Sisheng Peak. So you never truly care to listen to the full story.
You made sure to visit the forest daily to collect herbs for the village. The additional herbs were sold to the nearby villagers. The knowledge that you learned from your second past life allowed you to identify the rare herbs from the regular kind as well as sort the herbs from the poisonous ones. The rest of the time, you have decided to focus on improving your spiritual energy control and spending more time with Ying Qin.
You decided to explore the area in the forest that you hadn't explored in your previous life out of boredom. Reading novels made you learn that oftentimes, when exploring, the main characters will find some treasures, like a legendary sword or some mythic weapon. Adding to the fact that this world does have cultivators, it must have some mythic weapons hidden in the wild. However, you're not the main characters, but it's still worth a try. In your past life, you explored almost the entire forest, yet you found nothing. Instead, your past self was quite unfortunate and ended up finding groups of wild animals.
But also, thanks to that, you were able to know which parts of the forest to not go to.
However, even despite that, fate decided to play with you.
Out of nowhere, you heard the growling of wolves, so you quickly picked up the bucket and decided to leave in the direction of the village. You hope that you can leave before the wolves take notice of you. But what you would have never expected was for one of the wolves to jump in front of you, forcing you to run in the other direction from the village.
If it was just one wolf, you could have killed it with some minor injuries on your side. However, that clearly wasn't the situation!
You cursed once again; what's with your fate with wolves?
You decided to take random turns around the forest in hopes of getting the wolves off your routes, but there were still no results. As long as you're out in the open, the wolves will always find you.
Therefore, you must find a hiding spot somewhere dark so that the sunlight won't expose your location to the creatures. Like a cave! You looked around for caves. If there aren't any results, you continue looking while keeping your distance from the wolves. With some effort, you found a cave, just in time before the wolves caught up to you.
Without hesitation, you hide inside the dark, gloomy cave. You heard the wolves coming near the location with their paws stepping onto tree branches and leaves, until their movement completely stopped. Did they find you? Were you going to die again? Die earlier than last time? You closed your eyes, silently praying to any entity above that could get you out of this sticky situation.
The wolves whimpered at something before they took their leaves.
You were in a spot in the cave where only some sunlight could peek in.
You opened your eyes, peaking from behind the boulder that's hiding your figure; the wolves were gone. Something must have scared them away. Whatever it is, you took that as a sign that the imaginary entity from above has answered your prayers.
"Oh well, time to get up." You accidentally stepped on a mechanism floor piece on the ground. "Fuck!"
The ground that you were expecting to open beneath you didn't; instead, a blue spiritual power formed around the small cave. It disappeared after finishing its job. The cave expanded larger than before. Originally, the cave wasn't large, but it was just enough for hiding from creatures.
You have two choices: go deeper into the cave or go out. You have nothing to lose, so you picked going deeper into the cave.
                                        ——-
Prayers that nothing will go wrong.

I'm gonna answer these all in one go!
5 - something you see in fics a lot and love
Apollo with the most obvious autism + anxiety combo known to humankind
6 - something you see in art a lot and love
Tall Athena and SUPER FLUFFY Simon for sure. Or any of the AA characters with super fluffy or curly (or both) hair
15 - the character that always makes you smile
NAHYUTA :) beyond Ace Attorney, the strongest contenders off the top of my head are probably Claude (FE3H), Chu Wanning (2ha), and N (Pokémon)
20 - your very first fandom
Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds! It was on TV after school and when they stopped showing it I took finding out what happened into my own hands and discovered fanfiction from there
21 - a fandom you're not active in anymore but you still really like
I used to write and read a decent chunk of Legend of Zelda fic. I don't anymore, but I miss it a lot and still like thinking about it in a fandom-y way

Big fan of how Tianlang-Jun thinks his son and nephew are getting it on with the same guy at the same time and is like: This is fine :) I'm totally accepting and full of tolerance. I love humans! :)
And he means it.

I don't know if I'm reaching with that one, but it is established rather quickly that Lan WangJi is determined to mirror Wei WuXian's actions in his first life back at him when he has the means (for instance, the carrying on his back thing, or teasing him with "I do not know" as a call back to the "whatever" moment).
And just as it was a mystery to me why Wei WuXian, during the Yiling date, would entice A-Yuan with toys only to not buy him any, setting him up for disappointment, but I came to understand that it was actually a setup for Lan WangJi to buy it so that A-Yuan would like him (!!!), there is a kinda similar situation that crops up in the present, that was puzzling me but became clear to me on this re-read.
When they come out of Yi City, Wei WuXian is quite depressed and despondent. He has just witnessed Xiao XingChen's sad unlucky fate, and it reminded him very strongly of his own. And the juniors are all sad too, and want to burn paper money, and, sure, HanGuang-Jun is lenient and will let them express their emotions, but he's not that lenient, to let them do something improper/impolite like doing this in front of someone's house, when it is considered unlucky.
Yet, he does nothing, until Wei WuXian snaps out of his state and asks him if he's not going to do anything about it, to which Lan WangJi responds why don't you do it yourself.
And I think it was purposeful. Normally he would probably have told them - look at Lan SiZhui, that boy wasn't left to this own devices, someone taught him was what socially acceptable and didn't let him blunder through needlessly offending people until he figured it out himself.
But he saw the state Wei WuXian was in, and sought to distract him from it, by letting him notice and then handle the juniors' actions.
Clever HanGuang-Jun! He learned all of Wei WuXian's subtle tricks and is using them too!

In a way, in MDZS, Lan Sizhui is the key and answers to the big moral questions in the story: was it all worth it? Was it all worth it when Wei WuXian lost so much, even his life, when the Wens almost all died anyway, when there was so much collateral damage?
The narrative says: yes, it was worth it, because one child survived, and thrived. Look at that lovely, loveable young man! He is the reason all this was not for naught.
But what I find interesting is, Lan Sizhui is not even that exceptional, he doesn't make a big difference in the world, does he? He's still young, but despite his really good character and keen mind and aptitudes, he's not a genius, he's not renowned, he's not a Hanguang-Jun or a Yilling Laozu. He's just a kind, good-mannered, well brought up young man. Anyone would be happy to claim him as a son or a disciple or a son-in-law. But he's not some big game changer. Even though being a cultivator sets him apart from a good chunk of the normal population already, in his habitual context he's a normal kid. He makes friends, acts silly sometimes, hasn't slayed any Shuanwu of slaughter, got easily led into a trap by a trail of beheaded cats. A normal kid.
And that's important, because this reward is as the sacrifice Wei WuXian made. He didn't make some grand gesture for important people. He did what was right in his view, no more, no less. It wasn't for some greater good, even less for fame. It was simply what was right. And if you do what's right you're not really adding up and subtracting the wins and losses as in a giant thought experiment of the trolley problem. There probably would have been ultimately less death and suffering had Wei WuXian let the Wens to their misery and death quietly. There wouldn't have been a Lan Sizhui, but there would have been a Jiang YanLi, a Jin ZiXuan, and many people that got killed when they attacked him would have lived. But it wouldn't have been right, and so Wei WuXian doesn't think about it that way, and the narrative doesn't either. It tells you life is complicated, and sowing violence reaps more violence, and you can't always "win". But if you do your best, if you keep doing what's right, even if you are only human, and make mistakes, and everyone is against you, it still counts.
It counts. Not for the greater good, not for fame, it counts. Because the whole point is Lan Sizhui gets to live, and grow up, and be a normal kid and have a good life, and that's enough. He doesn't need to be or do anything "more" than that.

It is lovely in MDZS how Wei WuXian essentially has the “male” role, in that he is the one pulling on Lan WangJi’s figurative pigtails, the one to give him flowers repeatedly, the one to say he’s pretty out loud and in his head all the time, and the one trying to get him to pay attention to him.
Lan WangJi, meanwhile, gets teased, looks pretty, receives flowers, gets embarassed, defaults to ignoring his crush to appear aloof and keep control, his chaste modesty is being scandalously transgressed via super-meaningful Lan ribbon and cold pond shenanigans, and he secretly keeps all the tokens of Wei WuXian’s affections
And also kisses him forcefully against a tree (but even then in the text and Wei WuXian's view, he's a "shy maiden") and fantasizes about shutting him up in a very specific way
Socially also, Lan WangJi is the pure and treasured daughter niece/sister, thematically, while Wei WuXian is the handsome devilish rake who "corrupts him"
And I find it hilarious how they both subvert everything I've mentioned above (by virtue of being extremely well-written characters who aren't confined to one stereotype but feel like real, complex, subtle people instead), especially after Wei WuXian's resurrection when their dynamic changes to become extremely funny more balanced

The power dynamic between Bingqiu is so complex and unhinged.
On the one hand, Shen Qingqiu is the Shizun, and Luo Binghe the disciple. He still pretty much serves and defers to him as such. Shen Qingqiu is the master, the elder, the superior, in a way that can never change in a culture so steeped in respect for such hierarchies, and where reversal or equalization is simply not a thing. Shen Qingqiu himself still refers to himself as "this master" for most of the story (even post canon? I can't remember), and the one quality he appreciates in Luo Binghe (at least that he says aloud) is his obedience. In both their minds, he's very firmly the one who raised and trained Luo Binghe - though with very different connotations depending on who you ask.
On the other hand... well... Luo Binghe plays the obedient puppy-ish disciple, but he pretty much cute/pathetic-bullies his way into anything he wants, because Shen Qingqiu is weak to him and can't say no. So Luo Binghe plays submissive, cries a little, then gets to top Shen Qingqiu into next Sunday in the most unfillial way imaginable lol. Also, and I cannot stress this enough, he's the most powerful person in the world, he doesn't have to serve anyone in a humble cottage. He literally has an empire and is a ruler, but he plays housewife and meek disciple to this one spoiled guy who gave him the correct manual once and head-patted him with abandon.
Also let's not forget that, to Luo Binghe, Shen Jiu and Shen Yuan are pretty seamlessly the same person. This serial head-patter is also the guy who poured hot tea on him and would string him up to beat him and made him sleep in the woodshed like a particularly miserable Cinderella. To him, one day, his cruel master deemed him worthy of his love after he made him go through many trials, and then slam-dunked him into the abyss, and then self-destructed to save him and then turned out to be alive and avoiding him like the plague and then sulked because Luo Binghe did not properly ask his hand in marriage. Luo Binghe may be the most powerful man in the world and have Shen Qingqiu wrapped around his manipulative golden little finger, BUT the grip and ascendant Shen Qingqiu possesses over Luo Binghe's psyche is unparalleled.
BUT the other side of this equation is that Shen Qingqiu feels so guilty, and loves Luo Binghe so much, he can't bear to make him unhappy and folds like a wet paper towel any time there is the merest hint of tears - which is a conscious strategy on Luo Binghe's part! Shang Qinghua told him acting pathetic works, and it does, and so he milks it! Who knows how much of it is real? Not me. Not Shen Qingqiu either, who also does not care that he's being manipulated. He knows he's being manipulated! But it works anyway!
Because what are you going to do when a cute puppy makes sad eyes at you?? Not give him the bit of meat???
You're his master but he owns your heart so that's your fate, now. He's huge and could maul you but he loves you too much and prefers to act spoiled. He sits when you say sit, comes when you say come. You tell him no but he climbs into your lap anyway and you are helpless to stop him so you pet him. It's messy, full of pathos, possibly unhealthy. You're both living your best life.
That's Bingqiu.

It really breaks my heart that 2ha isn't there anymore. I used to open the files and read my favorite parts anytime I wanted, now I can already feel the words fading away and slipping from my memory and it's so sad.
I hope immortality will be released soon so I'll have some connection to the book again
good news, anon! you can access the ongoing translation via this caard; it seems there may have been more drama recently & the links were taken off of N*velupdates (i don't actually know what happened or the reason why they're gone).
you will have to find a MTL source for the 2nd half, though. a quick google search usually brings up a few
hopefully you see this and they work for you!!!
and i am very much with you about Immortality; one day, hopefully soon, that beautiful drama will air and we will all lose our collective shit

The Husky And The White Cat Shizun With their Baobei | 2HA Fanfic
Chapter 1
To be awakened in a body that was not your own, with limited access to power within the spiritual core, was truly a bizarre situation. The first day in the body got you already missing the technologies of the modern era; you were unsure how you'd even survive. The location was also crucial; after all, if it was in the middle of nowhere, chances are you'd likely die. Well, the first thing you realized was that you were in the middle of the forest next to a field of herbs. Your clothing was some common white robes, inner and outer.
There were times where you almost ended up dying, but thankfully your current body's agility and speed were quite decent. Allowing you to quickly move away from the approaching wolves that were hoping to have you as their dinner.
What’s up with your fate with wolves? You were not sure.
You followed routes that looked strangely familiar to you, and you ended up coming across a village and meeting a kind old woman who appeared to know you. Only then did you realize that your current body name has the same name as you, Y/N. That woman allowed you to tidy yourself up in her home, which you were grateful for. Only by looking in the mirror did you realize that your current body shared similar facial features and the same eye colors. The current body of yours has longer hair than your previous self. It was a female body with boobs. You also found out you're the granddaughter of Ying Qin, the old lady who called you 孙女. You were thankful for learning Chinese during your previous life, or else you were sure that you would act like a fool in the village and be unable to communicate properly with the rest of the villagers.
Being a woman in your current body was not the best thing, especially during the ancient times of China. There were times you saw the villagers forcefully marrying off their daughters to rich merchants in return for a bag of golden tael. There was nothing you could do about it, since you can’t even save your current situation. But you do feel bad for the daughters who got sold off.
It did take awhile for you to get accustomed to the lack of modern technologies, since in modern times, when it comes to any problems, it's easier for you to just look them up. You have to lie to Ying Qin and say that you bumped your head during your time collecting herbs, resulting in some memory loss. Thankfully, Ying Qin quickly believed you, even though it does sound too convenient. It was the fourth month when you heard from the villagers about a group of Sisheng Peak cultivators coming to help with the agricultural development of that month. Sisheng Peak rang a memory in your mind; you remembered reading a novel about Mo Ran and Chu Wanning. Sisheng Peak was where Mo Ran and Chu Wanning lived. But you were unsure if the timeline was after or before Mo Ran's identity as the son of Xue Duanrong.
From then on, you had one goal, which was to become a cultivator and get accepted as one of the disciples of Chu Wanning. Only then could you finally be close to your favorite idol. Yes, you would be quite a simp for Chu Wanning; who wouldn't be? The problem is that you would need a real cultivation book instead of those fake ones that scammers would sell. Almost as if fate answered your call, one of the Sisheng Peak cultivators accidentally dropped their cultivation-learning material during their visit without realizing it. You were unsure why they would even bring it when they're supposed to be helping to grow the crops of the village, but it's none of your business.
With the acquired material, you were finally able to learn the route of cultivation. Awakening your spiritual core was a hard task; for more than 3 years, there was hardly any process. You weren't sure if that was supposed to be normal or not. When you were almost ready to give up, suddenly you were able to sense your spiritual essence. Surprisedly, it was more than one, but you were unsure how many spiritual essences there were; it all felt mixed up. But regardless, you were happy to hear that you finally achieved the first step to cultivating. You wasted almost no time packing up and leaving the village to a location closer to Sisheng Peak.
Times that you wished that there was a system that could guide you, like the ones in novels. But you weren’t as lucky as the characters, as there were no systems.
After leaving your hometown to earn a living, you resorted to collecting herbs and battling weaker spirits. During your travels, you stumbled upon a special herb that could transform you into the opposite gender. However, upon contact, you experienced a sharp, almost unbearable burning sensation throughout your body. You hurried to a nearby river to cool off, assuming you had encountered some poisonous plants. Although the river provided relief, the next morning you discovered that your body had transformed, forcing you to buy male clothing to accommodate the change.
The next day that you went to the field, that plant was gone.
The effects never wear off.
—-
You were preparing for the new disciple-selecting ceremony; you have to think of a way for Chu Wanning to be willing to choose you as his disciple. Since you remembered that Chu Wanning doesn't blindly choose his disciples, Like Shi Mei, it was because of their kind and gentle nature. And you weren't the son or daughter of a sect leader like Xue Meng. There was almost nothing special about you. Your swordsmanship seems rigid and doesn't feel right after all; you don't have proper training, and some mere books weren't enough. Your cultivation is still on a basic basis, even though you can sense the mixture of different spiritual essences within you.
Perhaps picking a flower and handing it to Chu Wanning could boost your chances.
After all, you remembered reading a part about how hardly any disciples approach Chu Wanning due to statements about his coldness and harsh personality. Perhaps that was the reason why Chu Wanning hardly has any disciples, compared to the rest of the other sets of Shizun, who have hundreds of disciples.
You did it, and it succeeded. Strangely, since it shouldn’t have been that easy, but who were you to not accept the kindness that the universe gives you? All it matters is that Chu Wanning has taken you as one of his disciples.
You met Xue Meng and Shi Mei; however, Mo Ran was nowhere to be found. You guess that the timeline was before the main plot line started. You naively thought that everything was going to be alright, since it's probably the second timeline and not the previous one. You were horribly wrong. Shi Mei ended up pretending to die, and it completely fooled Mo Ran. Mo Ran wouldn't try to even listen to your explanation on how Shi Mei wasn't actually dead, resulting in a huge argument that tore both of your close relationships apart. Chu Wanning also blamed himself for the 'death' of Shi Mei. You tried to explain that Shi Mei wasn't dead, but Chu Wanning only assumed that you were trying to comfort him with lies. Nothing changed from the original plotline, even with your existence.
Mo Ran becomes Taxian-Jun, the emperor of the cultivation realm, marrying the most beautiful woman. Taking Chu Wanning as his concubine.
You attempted to run away with Chu Wanning but were caught by minions of Taxian-Jun and later Taxian-Jun. You still remember the terrifying glare that Taxian-jun gave you; it sends shivers down your spine. Taxian-jun dragged Chu Wanning back after coldly warning you that he wouldn't hesitate to kill you as well if you interrupted his plan. Even despite that, you were still determined to help Chu Wanning escape the grasp of Taxian- Jun.. During your stay at Sisheng Peak, you finally found a method of changing back to your original form, which was female, but you decided to stay as a male. Your plan was to sneak in as a female maid into the palace and sneak Chu Wanning out. Chu Wanning was surprised to see you in your original form; however, you knew that you didn't have much time to explain. But during both of your escapes, you died. You were unsure how you died. Did Taxian-Jun kill you? You only remembered bleeding out and dying, with Chu Wanning attempting to stop the bleeding but failing miserably due to the limitation of his cultivation.
