❝  kat,  ❞  his  tone  is  practically  a  warning  as  he  speaks.  he  knows  his  girlfriend  is  just  .  .  .  protective,  but  he  can  handle  himself.  especially  when  it  comes  to  things  with  his  mom  and  whoever  she's  screwing  at  the  time.  it  may  not  be  an  ideal  situation,  but  he  makes  it  work.  he  made  it  work  before  kat,  and  he  can  keep  making  it  work.  ❝  i'm  not  uncomfortable.  i'm  fine.  everything's  fine  and  you  don't  need  to  intervene.  promise.  ❞

❝  my  mom  doesn't  make  me  uncomfortable.  ❞  justin  pointed  out,  ❝  she  makes  you  uncomfortable.  ❞  he  didn't  have  a  problem  with  that,  in  fact,  he  understood  it.  the  harts  and  the  foleys  came  from  incredibly  different  worlds  and  it  was  obvious.  sometimes  justin  wondered  if  it  would  be  an  obstacle  .  .  .  but  he  tried  not  to  dwell  on  that.  justin  couldn't  help  but  watch  her  as  she  read,  not  really  focused  on  what  he  was  doing  .  .  .  but  instead  just  observing  her.  ❝  i'm  good.  promise.  if  i  wasn't,  you  know  i'd  let  you  know.  ❞  he  wouldn't,  but  he  could  easily  lie.

❝   alright...   i   just   don't   want   you   to   be   uncomfortable.   ❞   she   says,   picking   up   the   book   she'd   left   sitting   next   to   them   on   the   couch,   and   starting   to   read   a   few   more   pages.   she   liked   just   being   with   justin.   existing   in   the   same   space   as   him.   even   if   she   was   agitated   by   his   mother   and   her   boyfriend.   she'd   hate   even   more   if   she   didn't   get   to   spend   time   with   justin   because   of   it,   and   she   didn't   want   to   cause   any   issue   by   getting   up   and   dragging   him   back   to   her   place.   ❝   no,   this   is   fine.   as   long   as   you're   good,   i'm   good.   or,   rather,   i'll   be   good.   ❞

justin  can't  help  but  chuckle  just  a  little  bit.  kat  is  everything  to  him,  and  he  can't  imagine  where  he'd  be  without  her.  he  steals  one  of  her  nuggets,  holding  it  up  and  examining  it  beforee  he  pops  it  into  his  mouth.  ❝  how  can  you  tell  what  they  are?  ❞  he  asked,  a  mouth  full  of  chicken.  it  may  not  be  the  best  idea,  not  the  classiest,  but  he's  with  kat.  it  doesn't  matter.  ❝  they  all  look  the  same  .  .  .  ❞

justin  had  been  through  a  lot.  he'd  been  sure  things  were  going  to  start  going  up  .  .  .  and  then  deputy  standall  was  telling  him  that  his  mom  was  dead,  and  he  felt  like  he  was  falling  apart.  he'd  barely  seen  her,  but  the  news  had  broken  something  in  him.   he  was  sitting  on  his  bed,  staring  into  the  void,  and  he  didn't  even  realize  that  kat  had  come  into  the  room.  he'd  heard  the  door  open,  but  he'd  assumed  it  was  clay.  then  all  of  a  sudden,  there's  lips  on  his  forehead  and  he  jumps  back,  ❝  jensen,  what  the  fu--  ❞  but  then  he  sees  kat,  and  he  relaxes  instantly,  ❝  kat  .  .  .  what  are  you  doing  here?  ❞

justin  knows  that  his  mom's  not  great.  amber  foley  did  her  best  .  .  .  it  just  happened  that  her  best  was  practically  nothing.  but  he  wasn't  going  to  admit  that  to  kat,  he  loved  her,  but  he  was  protective  of  his  mom.  it  was  why  he  fought  with  seth  at  least  once  every  few  days.  ❝  she's  my  mom.  i'm  sure.  ❞  justin  would  always  have  to  keep  them  apart,  and  he  was  ready  to  keep  that  stress  on  his  plate.  he  needed  them  both  to  be  happy.  ❝  would  you  rather  go  to  your  house?  ❞  he  asked  her,  ❝  because  i  honestly  don't  care  .  .  .  as  long  as  i'm  with  you,  i'm  happy.  ❞

she   pouts,   heaving   a   sigh   as   she   settles   back   against   the   couch.   ❝   you're   sure   i   can't   do   anything?   she   makes   me   so   fucking   mad,   j.   ❞   she   says,   pulling   her   legs   back   up   under   her,   doing   her   best   to   not   give   his   mom   any   of   her   attention.   kat   had   never   gotten   along   with   amber   foley.   she   was   so   eager   for   the   day   that   she   and   justin   got   their   own   place   and   he   could   get   away   from   his   mom   and   her   stream   of   flavors   of   the   month.   ❝   we   could   go   hang   out   at   my   house   if   you   want?   we   could   make   a   pizza   and   watch   something   we   don't   have   to   pay   attention   to.   ❞

this  is  the  girl  he  loves.  he  loves  her  more  than  he  can  put  into  words,  she's  his  best  friend,  she's  the  person  he  can  go  to  no  matter  what  .  .  .  justin  foley  loves  kat  hart,  and  that's  not  going  to  stop  any  time  soon.  ❝  didn't  know  i  was  dating  a  major  dinosaur  fan.  ❞  justin  shook  his  head,  amusement  clear  on  his  features  as  he  said  it.  she's  jabbering  on  about  different  breeds  of  dinosaur,  and  he  just  can't  stop  smiling  at  her.  she's  so  cute  when  she  gets  passionate  about  something,  even  if  its  something  like  .  .  .  dinosaurs.  ❝  so  what's  this  one?  ❞  he  asked,  grabbing  another  nugget  and  showing  it  to  her.

❝   uh,   duh,   i   watched   the   land   before   time   religiously   as   a   kid.   didn't   you?   you   just   ate   littlefoot,   by   the   way.   ❞   she   says,   picking   up   a   stegosaurus,   and   biting   the   head   off.   when   she's   done   chewing,   she   holds   out   the   body   of   her   nugget   and   shows   it   to   him.   ❝   see   the   little   sticky-uppy   things?   i   don't   know   what   they're   called...   spikes,   i   guess?   that   means   it's   a   stegosaurus.   they   have   those   spiky   things.   the   one   you   ate   had   a   long   neck.   that   makes   it   an   apatosaurus.   that's   what   littlefoot   was   in   the   land   before   time.   ❞   if   she   were   with   anyone   else,   she   might   not   ramble   about   dinosaurs   so   much.   she   knows   how   geeky   it   sounds.   but   when   it   comes   to   justin,   she's   never   felt   embarrassed   or   nervous   to   talk   about   whatever   comes   to   mind.   anything   she   feels   like   saying,   she   just   says.   she   knows   he'll   listen   and   he's   interested.   being   loved   that   much...   it   feels   good.
