One of my favorite choices the Apothecary Diaries made was making the Emperor a “normal guy” (as far as I know as an anime-only). He’s not evil. He’s not hindering Mao Mao’s journey. He respects the concubines.

If anything his lack of autonomy and presence as the most powerful person in the country further enhances the show’s themes of working within the confines of class and gender inequality.

The previous emperor was a horrible, horrible pervert. Okay, then this emperor only weds women of age… Until he’s forced to take his father’s precious wife due to politics. The current emperor reasonably avoids her.

Eunuchs exist? Bam! now the surgery is outlawed, but this will create a reduction in male labor around the palace.

The emperor clearly favors few women. Well, now he must recognize a concubine with a powerful politician father playing the system.

He supports Mao Mao toeing the line of social expectations for women, but hasn’t removed the law against women preparing medicine. It makes one think, if he wanted to, could he make the change at all? For every two steps forward, he’s forced to take one step back.

In this universe even the Emperor is limited by social pressure and the expectations of his station. His life and that of his children is out of his control, and if that isn’t such a compelling piece of world building I don’t know what is.

If that’s how the author twists the narrative of the Emperor you better believe her female characters dealing with women’s issues in this society are even better written.

Mystery Trio Au scenario idea:

The gnomes are looking for a new queen, they tried with Stanford, with Fiddleford but now a new member appeared and they have long hair and they're sure they'd be a good Queen: it's Stanley.

Stanley doesn't get kidnapped, no, he catches the damned lil men when he's out for a smoke because he was waiting for them. He feels like deaf weight to his brother and has taken upon himself to keep guard and the place clean, doing chores so he's not kicked out... Today: threaten the gnomes to stop rummaging through the trash.

Imagine his surprise when they ask him to be their queen- somehow they didn't end up kidnapping him or him punching them but instead they sit side by side on the porch like old friends. Noticing they won't really leave until they get a queen, Stanley says he's left that life behind as queen "but I suppose I could teach ya a thing or two" he says.

The gnomes are happy because not only can they have a queen- they can be the Queens! Stan follows them to their part of the forest.

When Fiddleford and Stanford arrive to the gnome area to save Stanley, they find Stanley in full drag and giving a show to many gnomes- some are wearing little dresses and makeup, looking wide eyed at Stan like he's some pop idol, others don't and just become fanboys/girls of the man- any way the gnomes are sad to see their queen go.

(Or: Stanley misunderstands what the gnomes mean by queen)

Whats been ruining me to the core recently is the difference between Dead Kid Loki in Young Avengers and Crime That Will Not Be Forgiven in Agent of Asgard

I just. Look. In Young Avengers Dead Kid Loki is basically as Kid Loki was in life. He makes a joke about needing to crack heads to make a Hamlet. He has expressive hand gestures and trolls New Loki to insanity. He looks like himself except green to show he's a ghost.

Then you get to Agent of Asgard and Dead Kid Loki is a disembodied head with gaping black eyes SCREAMING that his murder is a crime. He's a kid with blood all over his mouth standing freakishly in corners. New Loki looks up into mirrors and his reflection is this corpse yelling at him.

Part of me is like. Did YA feature a sillier more familiar Kid Loki because Kieron Gillen was writing it and he is the author of Kid Loki, so he writes a ghost from Kid Loki's perspective

Meanwhile Al Ewing wrote a more horrifying Kid Loki because Al Ewing writes Teen Loki, and therefore he writes a Kid Loki from Teen Loki's perspective

Or does it have to do with the end of Young Avengers? Teen Loki realizes he's been fueling hundreds of specters of guilt in his life and only by admitting aloud the truth that he murdered Kid Loki will the specters fade (all of them except Kid Loki.)

Did that change the very nature of Kid Loki's ghost? Did the truth make him uglier and scarier to look at? Did confession make the guilt worse?
