fellows I have great news. I am leaving Iowa soon! For a plant job in a liberal state out west!
many things to ruminate on about this (intentionally avoiding talking about the horrors and such here) (very hard to ignore because the horrors weigh heavily on my psyche offline) but my immediate question is this-- I'm planning to hit some national parks and stuff on the drive over, and also on the drive to and from that plant conference with an Isoetes panel in mid march. the conference is in Myrtle beach South Carolina and I'll end up on the border between Idaho and Oregon.
fellas. are there any sick plant sights you would recommend? my list so far is this:
-wild venus fly traps -any isoetes location (thinking about seeing the ones in those vernal pools in Tennessee, for instance) -any place with Vittaria appalachiana -any place with Umbilicaria mammulata, the umbilicate rock tripe lichen. brodo et al promised me creatures the size of dinner plates in Lichens of North America and I've just been thinking about them quite a bit -any jelly lichen (i want to. touch) -not explicitly plant related but tide pools of any kind (huge tide pool enjoyer over here) -darlingtonia! although I think that's farther west than I'm going to end up
I'm also looking for those national park cancellation stamps if it makes a difference! although I'm not a huge completionist about it

10 Affordable Places to Visit in the USA in 2025
Want to take an affordable vacation in 2025? While travel costs have been on the rise this year — overall costs have increased by 24% compared to 2024, according to Investopedia — it’s still possible to save money if you know where to go. On average, Americans are planning to take five trips throughout the year, with weekend getaways being the most popular. Additionally, 84% of travelers have shifted their habits to be more budget-conscious. You don’t need to max out your credit card when there are so many affordable destinations to explore.
1. Orlando, Florida
Known as the “Theme Park Capital of the World,” Orlando might sound expensive at first. While theme park tickets can be pricey, the city offers countless budget-friendly attractions beyond Disney World and Universal Studios. Explore natural gems like Wekiwa Springs State Park or visit the Orlando Science Center. For theme park lovers, planning ahead and visiting during off-peak times can save you a bundle.
2. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Step into history without stepping out of your budget in Philadelphia. This city is home to iconic landmarks like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, both offering free or low-cost admission. Wander through Elfreth’s Alley, the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in the U.S., or explore Fairmount Park for a relaxing afternoon.
3. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
A classic seaside escape, Myrtle Beach combines affordability with relaxation. Enjoy free public beaches, stroll the iconic boardwalk, and indulge in fresh seafood at local eateries. Compared to other beach destinations like Charleston or Hilton Head, Myrtle Beach stands out as a budget-friendly option.
4. Las Vegas, Nevada
Think Las Vegas is all about casinos and luxury? Think again. Wander through the Bellagio Conservatory, marvel at the fountains, or hike at nearby Red Rock Canyon — all without spending a fortune. Many restaurants and attractions offer competitive prices, especially midweek or during off-seasons.
5. Charlotte, North Carolina
Charlotte caters to every interest, from sports and history to great food and outdoor adventures. Explore the NASCAR Hall of Fame or wander through the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. For food lovers, the 7th Street Public Market is a must-visit for budget-friendly Southern cuisine.
6. Denver and Colorado Springs, Colorado
The Colorado duo of Denver and Colorado Springs is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. In Denver, enjoy vibrant city life with free art installations and parks. Colorado Springs offers hiking trails and picturesque spots like Garden of the Gods, where entry is free. Combining these cities into one trip makes for a budget-friendly mountain escape.
7. Albuquerque, New Mexico
Albuquerque surprises visitors with its rich culture, hot air balloon festivals, and breathtaking desert scenery. Visit the National Hispanic Cultural Center or the Albuquerque Museum for affordable, enriching experiences. The city’s vibrant art scene and Southwest-inspired cuisine make it a delightful stop for any traveler.
8. Baltimore, Maryland
Baltimore combines waterfront charm with affordability. Tour historic Fell’s Point, explore the National Aquarium, or enjoy seafood by the harbor. Many attractions, like the Walters Art Museum, offer free admission, making it a great city for budget-conscious travelers.
9. Phoenix, Arizona
With its warm climate and stunning desert landscapes, Phoenix is ideal for an affordable outdoor adventure. Hike trails at Camelback Mountain, explore the Roosevelt Row Arts District, or enjoy free stargazing opportunities in South Mountain Park. The Desert Botanical Garden offers a modest entry fee for a serene experience.
10. Miami, Florida
While Miami is known for its glitz and glamour, it also offers plenty of budget-friendly experiences. Relax on free beaches like South Beach, explore the colorful Wynwood Walls, or wander through Little Havana for cultural immersion — all without spending a dime.
Tips for Budget Travel in the U.S.
To stretch your travel budget even further, here are some helpful tips:
Travel Off-Season: Flights and accommodations are often cheaper during shoulder seasons.
Use Public Transportation: Skip car rentals and rely on affordable public transport or ride-shares.
Stay Outside City Centers: Hotels and rentals in the suburbs often cost less and provide more value.
Explore Free Attractions: Many cities offer free museums, parks, and cultural events.
Book in Advance: Secure flights and accommodations early to snag the best deals.
Sometimes, we get caught up chasing faraway destinations — the kind that sound impressive but often come with a hefty price tag. But travel doesn’t have to be about how far you go; it’s about how much a place stays with you.
Affordable travel isn’t about cutting corners. It’s about finding joy in simple moments. A hike with breathtaking views, a walk through historic streets, or a meal at a local spot can create memories just as meaningful as any bucket-list destination.
And when you’re ready to head out, pick a bag that fits the journey. Rare Klub has a hand-picked collection of unique, high-quality bags. From trendy totes for city getaways to backpacks for outdoor adventures and stylish clutches for evenings, Rare Klub has something for every traveler who wants to pack light and look effortlessly elegant.

Thurs, June 6
Made our way to CA today. The Oregon coast was wild and untamed. The beaches go on for miles! Volcanic stacks jut out of the water with waves crashing. Despite the sand dunes, the vegetation is lush due to the fog and rain. A unique eco system that’s just as fantastic as promised.

Took a detour to Alfred Loeb State Park. Aaron wanted to smell the myrtle forest, something I’ve never done. The leaves are super aromatic. And the ferns!!&#*?!

Week 2 observations:
1.8.25

Crimson bottlebrush
Melaleuca citrina
In the Myrtle family. Native to Australia and apparently one of the first plants to be taken from Australia. It is hardy and is on the federal noxious weeds list. I find that interesting since it’s been planted in my complex. Surely, native plants could look just as good 🤷🏻♀️
Observed at home on Galveston Island 1.6.25 & 1.8.25.

1.9.25

Blue-tailed Damselfly
Ischnura elegans
This might be an adult male. It is a European species.
Observed on Galveston Island Seawall on 1.5.25.
I stopped to get pictures of the front over the water and this little guy landed for a quick rest.

1.10.25

Prickly Sowthistle
Sonchus asper
Another invasive species here in Texas. It’s native to Eurasia, is in the same tribe as the dandelion and is edible though you’d want to attempt this with a young plant before it gets too spiny!
Observed at Galveston Island State Park on 1.10.25.
I had fun capturing it’s reflection

1.11.25

Gulf Coast Toad
Incilius valliceps
They are 1 of 10 true toads in Texas. They are native to Texas. This could be a young female.
Observed at Galveston Island State Park on 1.11.25.
I picked 3 large fire ants off this poor toad!!
#gulfcoasttoad #Inciliusvalliceps #citizenscience #nature #outdoors #truetoad #january #january11 #2025 #picoftheday #project365 #day11
1.12.25

Sea Purslane
Sesuvium portulacastrum
It was raining all day so I didn’t get a chance to get something today. This was observed 1.11.25 at Galveston Island State Park.
It is native to Texas and much of the world. Also has naturalized in places it’s been introduced. It’s a sprawling perennial herb used in food and medicine around the world. They even pickle it in the Philippines!

1.13.25

Sanderling
Calidris alba
Observed on Galveston Island 1.13.25.
Because it’s in its non breeding winter plumage I don’t know if it’s a male or female.
They can travel great distances to their breeding grounds.
They run along the beach, “chasing waves” and feel on invertebrates buried in the sand.
#sanderling #Calidrisalba #citizenscience #bird #beach #nature #outdoors #january #january13 #2025 #picoftheday #project365 #day13
1.14.25

Surinam cockroach
Pycnoscelus surinamensis
This is an invasive species to Texas and other regions coming from the Indomalayan region. It is not considered an indoor pest though you might find one occasionally in your home. They are also referred to as the greenhouse cockroach. It burrows in loose soil and will come out at night to eat soft plants. They are almost all female having evolved to reproduce parthenogenetically, where the embryos develop from unfertilized eggs.
Some critters will show me getting out of my comfort zone and this is one of those times. I hate roaches but I want to show more than just the “pretty” side of nature. This was observed at Galveston Island state park 1.3.25

Withers Swash District Plan in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina by inFORM studio
November 13th, 2011 by Sanjay Gangal
Article source: inFORM studio
Commonly referred to as Withers Swash; the Withers Estuary embodies so much of the spirit and soul of Myrtle Beach. Almost universally, tourists and residents alike appreciate the natural ecology of the region, particularly the beaches, which are all intrinsically connected to Withers.
Architect: inFORM studio
Name of Project: Withers Swash District Plan
Location: Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Total Project: 4.2 sq. mile drainage basin
Client: City of Myrtle Beach
Total Project: 4.2 sq. mile drainage basin
Technical design principal: Kenneth Van Tine
Marketing, managing principal: Gina Van Tine
Design principal: Michael Guthrie
Design director / project architect: Cory Lavigne, Robert Miller, Anna Haezebrouck, Nick Liebler
The Withers Swash District Concept Plan proposes a restorative design approach to a stressed environment. Considerations given to the design process include a healthy storm water system, appropriate urban densities with green design strategies, an active/passive park system, preservation of cultural heritage, and a diversification of economies for the City of Myrtle Beach.
The city of Myrtle Beach is poised to embrace a dramatic shift in development to a planning approach that presents a more comprehensive approach to sustainable living. Unique not only because of its tourism context, Myrtle Beach presents an environment with unparalleled challenges and opportunities for a synthesized approach to planning and design.
Public Input
The intent for the conceptual development of a Withers Swash District Plan is to repurpose an environmentally stressed region of the city into a highly sustainable, ecologically rich park environment; and recognize and preserve the historical significance and heritage of the region. The resulting green space should integrate a sustainable approach to storm water management, create qualitative green space for the surrounding residents and provide a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization and interconnectivity for the district. Implementing an integrated approach, the planning process includes a comprehensive strategy creating opportunities to address transportation, land use, community connectivity, preservation of cultural heritage, economic catalysts, and development density.
Final Concept
An important aspect of the planning process for the City of Myrtle Beach is the inclusion of relevant collaborating entities and stakeholders whose input and support are critical as a part of this process. Several classifications of stakeholders were identified for input into this process and include: Residential Impact Group, Commercial Impact Group, Governmental Impact Group, Environmental Impact Group, and a District Planning Advisory Committee (DPAC).
Green Infrastructure Concept
inFORM studio
inFORM studio is a Woman-owned, WBE certified, design based practice with three offices in Detroit, Michigan, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and New York City. Each office is fully integrated and collaborates with teams set for each project that span all three locations.
Concept Plan
Formed in March 2000, Van Tine|Guthrie Studio of architecture quickly earned a reputation for the progressive work of the three principals, Michael L. Guthrie, Kenneth R. Van Tine, and Gina Van Tine. The firm has received continued peer recognition and community attention for design excellence in acquiring numerous state and local AIA Honor Awards, authoring the winning entry for the Bagley Street Pedestrian Bridge as part of the $120 million Michigan Department of Transportation Ambassador Gateway Project and in June of 2003, was selected as one of eight international finalists out of 1,557 entries to present at the Grand Egyptian Museum Competition Symposium in Cairo, Egypt.
Concept Plan
In 2004 the firm was invited to participate, as one of 30 firms from around the world, in the prestigious Canadian Museum of Human Rights competition and recently received an honorable mention in the world-wide competition for the Museum of Contemporary Art and Planning Exhibition in Shenzhen, China. In late 2010, a 2-phase international competition involving 47 firms from around the world was held to select an iconic pedestrian bridge design for the city of Providence, Rhode Island.
Collins street development
The proposal submitted by inFORM studio was selected as the winning entry and is slated for completion in 2013. In an effort to pursue a higher level of research and immerse our practice in an environmentally sustainable approach to every project, the firm formally changed the name to inFORM studio in early 2007. In March 2011, inFORM studio was selected as AIA Michigan Firm of the Year.

The Transportation System in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
Getting around Myrtle Beach is pretty straightforward, whether you’re a local or just visiting. You’ve got plenty of options, from public buses run by Coast RTA to taxis and rideshare services like Uber and Lyft. The bus system covers most of the main spots, including popular tourist areas, though the schedules can sometimes feel a bit limited. If you’re up for it, renting a bike or a golf cart is a fun way to explore, especially near the beach. For longer trips, having your own car makes things much easier since some attractions are spread out. Traffic can get busy during peak tourist seasons, so keep that in mind. It’s all about finding what works best for your plans.
Hollywood Wax Museum in Myrtle Beach, SC
The Hollywood Wax Museum in Myrtle Beach is one of those places that’s just plain fun to visit. It’s hard to miss, with the giant King Kong statue climbing the building outside. Inside, you’ll find wax figures of all kinds of celebrities, from classic Hollywood stars to today’s big names. The best part is how interactive it is—you can pose with the figures, try on props, and snap plenty of photos. There’s also a bit of trivia and behind-the-scenes info sprinkled throughout, which makes it more than just a photo op. The museum is family-friendly, but it’s fun for adults too, especially if you’re into movies and pop culture. It’s definitely a quirky, memorable stop while you’re in town.
Humpback Whale Spotted Off Myrtle Beach State Park Pier
It’s amazing to hear about a humpback whale spotted so close to Myrtle Beach. These majestic creatures are incredible to witness, especially when they breach so close to shore. It’s a reminder of the delicate balance we need to maintain to protect them. While it’s great to see these whales in our waters, it’s also important to keep in mind the threats they face, like entanglement in fishing gear and collisions with boats. The speed limits put in place by NOAA are a step in the right direction, but it’s clear that smaller boats are still contributing to the danger. It’s up to all of us to keep raising awareness and supporting efforts to keep these incredible animals safe.
