Stem Cell Threrapy in the UK: What to Expect
In recent years, stem cell therapy has emerged as a revolutionary field within medicine, offering new hope for patients suffering from a variety of chronic diseases and injuries. As research continues to advance, stem cell therapy is becoming increasingly accessible in the UK, providing innovative treatment options for conditions that were once deemed untreatable. This article explores what patients can expect when considering stem cell therapy in UK, from the underlying principles of the treatment to the processes involved and the potential outcomes.
Understanding Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cell therapy involves the use of stem cells to repair, regenerate, or replace damaged tissues or organs. Stem cells are unique cells that have the ability to develop into various types of cells in the body, including muscle, nerve, and blood cells. This remarkable potential makes them invaluable in regenerative medicine.
There are two primary types of stem cells used in therapy: embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. Embryonic stem cells are derived from early-stage embryos and have the capability to differentiate into any cell type. On the other hand, adult stem cells, which can be found in various tissues such as bone marrow or fat, are more limited in their differentiation potential but are often used in treatments due to their lower ethical concerns and easier accessibility.
Conditions Treated with Stem Cell Therapy
In the UK, stem cell therapy is being explored for an array of conditions, ranging from hematological disorders to degenerative diseases. Some of the most common conditions treated include:
1. Blood Disorders
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has been a cornerstone of treatment for blood disorders such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. In this procedure, stem cells are harvested from the patient or a donor and transplanted into the patient after chemotherapy or radiation therapy. The goal is to restore healthy blood cell production.
2. Neurological Conditions
Research into the use of stem cells for neurological conditions, such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and spinal cord injuries, is rapidly advancing. Stem cells have the potential to repair damaged nerve cells, potentially improving motor function and quality of life for patients with these challenging conditions.
3. Orthopedic Injuries
Stem cell therapy is gaining traction in orthopedics, particularly for conditions such as osteoarthritis and tendon injuries. Treatment involves injecting stem cells into damaged joints or tissues to promote healing and regeneration. Many patients report significant pain relief and improved mobility following treatment.
4. Cardiovascular Diseases
Innovative studies are investigating the use of stem cells to repair heart tissue damaged by heart attacks or chronic cardiovascular conditions. The aim is to enhance cardiac function and improve outcomes for patients with heart disease, which remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality.
What to Expect During the Treatment Process
For those considering stem cell therapy in the UK, understanding the treatment process is essential. Here is a step-by-step overview:
1. Initial Consultation
The journey begins with an initial consultation with a qualified healthcare professional or specialist. During this meeting, the patient’s medical history, symptoms, and treatment goals are discussed. The healthcare provider will assess whether stem cell therapy is a suitable option based on the individual’s specific condition.
2. Diagnostic Testing
Following the consultation, patients may undergo various diagnostic tests to evaluate the severity of their condition. These tests can include blood work, imaging studies, or other assessments to provide a comprehensive understanding of the patient’s health status. The findings from these tests are crucial for determining the most appropriate treatment plan.
3. Treatment Planning
Once a diagnosis is established, a personalized treatment plan is developed. This plan outlines the specific type of stem cell therapy recommended, the expected duration of treatment, and any additional therapies that may be beneficial. Patients will also receive information about the source of the stem cells, whether they are derived from their own body or a donor.
4. Stem Cell Collection
The method of stem cell collection varies depending on the type of therapy. For hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, stem cells may be harvested from the bone marrow or peripheral blood. In contrast, adipose-derived stem cells can be obtained through a minimally invasive liposuction procedure. Throughout this process, healthcare professionals ensure that the patient remains comfortable and informed.
5. Administration of Stem Cells
Once the stem cells are harvested and processed, they are administered to the patient. This can be done through an intravenous infusion or direct injection into the affected area, depending on the treatment type. The administration is typically performed in an outpatient setting, allowing patients to return home the same day.
6. Post-Treatment Care and Monitoring
After the stem cell treatment, patients are closely monitored for any immediate reactions or complications. Follow-up appointments are essential for tracking progress and assessing the treatment’s effectiveness. Patients may also receive guidance on rehabilitation or supportive therapies to enhance recovery and maximize the benefits of stem cell therapy.
Potential Benefits and Risks
Stem cell therapy offers numerous potential benefits, including the ability to stimulate healing and regeneration. Many patients report significant improvements in their symptoms, reduced pain, and enhanced quality of life following treatment. The innovative nature of stem cell therapy also means that it continues to evolve, with ongoing research exploring new applications and techniques.
However, it is vital to recognize that, like any medical treatment, stem cell therapy comes with its risks. Possible complications may include infection, bleeding, and adverse reactions to the procedure. Furthermore, the long-term effects of stem cell therapies are still being researched, and patients should be aware that success can vary from person to person.

[ad_1] This groundbreaking therapy becomes lifeline for blood cancer patients. The MirrorA "game-changing" triple therapy has been given the green light for NHS patients in the UK in a significant stride towards transforming the landscape of myeloma treatment. For thousands of Brits grappling with this incurable blood cancer, this development is nothing short of a lifeline.Myeloma, a cancer that manifests in the bone marrow and manifests symptoms like fatigue and bone pain, affects approximately 6,000 people in the UK every year. Until now, a common approach to treating myeloma involved administering high-dose chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant utilising the patient's own cells. But for around two-thirds of patients, especially those in frail health or elderly, this treatment was not an option. Now, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) has granted approval to the combination of daratumumab, lenalidomide, and dexamethasone, commonly referred to as DRD. This revolutionary triple therapy has been recognised as a viable alternative for adults with untreated myeloma who cannot undergo a stem cell transplant.Clinical data presented to Nice demonstrates that DRD significantly reduces the risk of disease progression and death by an impressive 45% when compared to the conventional treatment of lenalidomide plus dexamethasone. What's more, the survival rate without disease progression extends to five years, in contrast to just under three years for the other group. The overall survival data paints an equally encouraging picture, indicating a 34% decreased risk of death when compared to the standard treatment. Myeloma UK, a charity dedicated to supporting patients, estimates that up to 4,000 myeloma patients in the UK annually could reap the benefits of this groundbreaking triple therapy. As of now, only half of myeloma patients survive the disease for five years or more, with just around a third surpassing the ten-year mark. Shelagh McKinlay, the director of research and advocacy at Myeloma UK, expressed her excitement, saying that "DRD is a game-changer that will make a tremendous difference to patients' quality of life" while bridging the survival gap between those eligible for a stem cell transplant and those who are not.Triple therapy is not merely about extending life but also about enhancing the quality of life, offering patients more precious years with their loved ones. The fight against myeloma has taken a monumental step forward, offering new hope to those facing this challenging diagnosis. [ad_2]

The Role of Endocannabinoids in Regulating Blood Cancer
Blood cancer, also known as hematologic cancer, is a group of diseases that affect the production and function of blood cells. The three main types of blood cancer are leukaemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. While treatments for these conditions have improved significantly over the years, researchers continue to explore novel therapeutic approaches. One area of interest is the role of endocannabinoids in regulating blood cancer. This article will discuss the endocannabinoid system and its potential impact on blood cancer without delving into the medical uses of CBD.
The Endocannabinoid System
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a complex cell-signalling system that plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis in the body. It is composed of endocannabinoids, receptors, and enzymes. Endocannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds similar in structure to cannabinoids found in cannabis plants. The two primary endocannabinoids are anandamide (AEA) and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG). These compounds interact with cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2, which are present throughout the body, including the immune system and the central nervous system.
Endocannabinoids and Blood Cancer
Recent studies have shown that the ECS may play a role in the development and progression of blood cancers. Here are some ways in which endocannabinoids can regulate blood cancer:
1. Apoptosis: Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a natural process by which the body eliminates damaged or unnecessary cells. Dysregulation of apoptosis can lead to the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells. Research has demonstrated that endocannabinoids can induce apoptosis in various cancer cell types, including blood cancer cells. By promoting apoptosis, endocannabinoids may help control the growth and spread of cancerous cells.
2. Cell Proliferation: Uncontrolled cell proliferation is a hallmark of cancer, including blood cancers. Endocannabinoids have been shown to inhibit the proliferation of various cancer cells by modulating the activity of signalling pathways involved in cell growth and division. This suggests that endocannabinoids may have the potential to suppress the growth of blood cancer cells.
3. Angiogenesis: Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, is essential for tumour growth and metastasis. Studies have indicated that endocannabinoids can inhibit angiogenesis by targeting specific molecular pathways involved in this process. By suppressing angiogenesis, endocannabinoids may limit the supply of nutrients and oxygen to cancerous cells, thereby inhibiting their growth and spread.
4. Immune System Modulation: The immune system plays a crucial role in detecting and eliminating cancer cells. However, cancer cells can sometimes evade immune surveillance and establish an immunosuppressive environment. Research has shown that endocannabinoids can modulate immune responses, potentially enhancing the ability of the immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells.
Conclusion
The endocannabinoid system appears to play a significant role in regulating various aspects of blood cancer, such as apoptosis, cell proliferation, angiogenesis, and immune system modulation. While further research is needed to fully understand the complex interactions between endocannabinoids and blood cancer, these findings offer promising insights into the development of novel therapeutic strategies for hematologic malignancies.

Daily 11-minute brisk walk is enough to reduce risk of early death, say researchers
University of Cambridge (UK), March 1, 2023
One in ten early deaths could be prevented if everyone managed at least half the recommended level of physical activity, say a team led by researchers at the University of Cambridge.
In a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, the researchers say that 11 minutes a day (75 minutes a week) of moderate-intensity physical activity—such as a brisk walk—would be sufficient to lower the risk of diseases such as heart disease, stroke and a number of cancers.
To explore the amount of physical activity necessary to have a beneficial impact on several chronic diseases and premature death, researchers from the Medical Research Council (MRC) Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis, pooling and analyzing cohort data from all of the published evidence.
In total, they looked at results reported in 196 peer-reviewed articles, covering more than 30 million participants from 94 large study cohorts, to produce the largest analysis to date of the association between physical activity levels and risk of heart disease, cancer, and early death.
The researchers found that outside of work-related physical activity, two out of three people reported activity levels below 150 min per week of moderate-intensity activity and fewer than one in ten managed more than 300 min per week.
Broadly speaking, they found that beyond 150 min per week of moderate-intensity activity, the additional benefits in terms of reduced risk of disease or early death were marginal. But even half this amount came with significant benefits: accumulating 75 min per week of moderate-intensity activity brought with it a 23% lower risk of early death.
Dr. Soren Brage from the MRC Epidemiology Unit said, "If you are someone who finds the idea of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week a bit daunting, then our findings should be good news. Doing some physical activity is better than doing none. This is also a good starting position—if you find that 75 minutes a week is manageable, then you could try stepping it up gradually to the full recommended amount."
Seventy-five minutes per week of moderate activity was also enough to reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease by 17% and cancer by 7%. For some specific cancers, the reduction in risk was greater—head and neck, myeloid leukemia, myeloma, and gastric cardia cancers were between 14-26% lower risk. For other cancers, such as lung, liver, endometrial, colon, and breast cancer, a 3-11% lower risk was observed.
The researchers calculated that if everyone in the studies had done the equivalent of at least 150 min per week of moderate-intensity activity, around one in six (16%) early deaths would be prevented. One in nine (11%) cases of cardiovascular disease and one in 20 (5%) cases of cancer would be prevented.
However, even if everyone managed at least 75 min per week of moderate-intensity physical activity, around one in ten (10%) early deaths would be prevented. One in twenty (5%) cases of cardiovascular disease and nearly one in thirty (3%) cases of cancer would be prevented.
Meta-analysis affirms benefit for ginseng in type 2 diabetics
Zheijian University (China), February 19 2023
The journal Medicine published the results of a meta-analysis conducted by researchers at China's Zhejiang University which add evidence to a beneficial effect for ginseng in men and women with impaired glucose tolerance or type 2 diabetes.
For their research, Yun-mei Yang and colleagues selected eight trials that included 195 participants treated with ginseng and an equal number of control subjects. The analysis revealed improvements in fasting glucose, post-meal insulin levels and insulin resistance, as well as a reduction in triglycerides, and total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol among ginseng-treated subjects.
"The present meta-analysis is the first updated review to evaluate the efficacy of ginseng-related therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes or glucose intolerance," the authors announce. "Furthermore, our results demonstrate for the first time, an improved lipid profile (triglycerides, total cholesterol, and LDL) associated with ginseng-related therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose tolerance. Moreover, ginseng-related therapy was more effective in terms of hemoglobin A1c and fasting glucose levels, in drug naïve participants than those taking antidiabetic medications, probably due to the masking of the effect of ginseng by antidiabetic medications."
As possible mechanisms for ginseng, Dr Yang and colleagues suggest modulations of insulin production and secretion, glucose metabolism, glucose uptake and inflammation, and activation of the AMPK –activated protein kinase pathway. Their research suggests that ginseng may be more beneficial for patients who have not started antidiabetic drug therapies than those already being treated.
"The present results establish the benefit of ginseng supplementation in improving glucose control and insulin sensitivity in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus or impaired glucose intolerance," they conclude.
Breast milk boosts premature babies' brain development, suggests study
University of Edinburgh, March 1, 2023
The more breast milk premature babies are fed while in neonatal intensive care, the greater the level of brain development, a study suggests.
The cerebral cortex—the part of the brain for learning and thinking—is usually underdeveloped in premature babies, but in infants who consumed high levels of breast milk it quickly resembled those of babies born to term.
Experts say that feeding premature babies with breast milk could help reduce the developmental and learning problems associated with preterm birth.
Researchers from University scanned the brains of 212 babies who were part of the Theirworld Edinburgh Birth Cohort, a study which monitors the progress of premature babies from birth to adulthood.
The group included 135 babies who were born before 32 weeks of pregnancy and 77 who were born to term. Researchers collected information about how premature babies were fed during neonatal intensive care and brain scans for all babies were performed around 40 weeks from conception.
Brain scans revealed that babies who received higher amounts of breast milk—from their mother or a donor—had a more mature cerebral cortex compared with those who received less, similar to the scans of babies born to term.
"Our findings suggest that brain development in the weeks after preterm birth is improved in babies who receive greater amounts of breast milk. Mothers of preterm babies should be supported to express breast milk, if they are able to, while their baby is in the neonatal unit as this may offer the best chance of healthy brain development," says Dr. Gemma Sullivan.

Best News of Last Week
Edition #022 - 🐱 — Hope you had a great weekend. Let’s read some positive news :)
1. Experimental treatment in Spain puts 18 cancer patients in complete remission
Barcelona’s Clínic Hospital announces hopeful results for people with multiple myeloma. Developed through the public system, the cost is lower than commercially available products. The new therapy extracts blood from the patients, selects their T cells (another type of white blood cell) and redesigns them in the lab through genetic engineering, making them better able to recognize cancer cells.
Have read a similar thing 12 years ago, they used genetically modified HIV to bring information into the T-cells. Problem was the needed destruction and reconstruction of the complete immune system and the bill of 1 million$ per treatment. The mrna basically does the same thing now for a fraction of the coast and risk... Amazing times to be alive
2. Denver Museum of Nature & Science receives $25M anonymous donation
An anonymous donor contributed $25 million to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and its supporting organization, the DMNS Foundation, which marks the largest gift in the institution’s 121-year history.
Ten percent of the donation will go to the museum to help with staffing, equipment and launch activities, the museum said. The remaining 90% will help establish an endowed fund at the DMNS Foundation.
3. Omicron up to 70% less likely to need hospital care
People catching Omicron are 50% to 70% less likely to need hospital care compared with previous variants, a major analysis says. The UK Health Security Agency says its early findings are “encouraging” but the variant could still lead to large numbers of people in hospital.
Protection against severe disease is likely to be far more robust. The report comes hot on the heels of data from South Africa, Denmark, England and Scotland which all pointed to reduced severity.
4. Lynx hunting in Latvia to be prohibited
Latvia’s State Forest Service (VMD) will not issue permits to hunt lynx this hunting season. The reason is because there are plans to add the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) to the list of especially protected species.
5. Government of Canada moving forward with banning single-use plastics
“We are taking action to get plastic pollution out of Canada’s communities and our waterways. The proposed Single-Use Plastics Prohibition Regulations are a big step forward in our goal to reduce plastic pollution and move to a circular economy for plastics. Smart, clear and collaborative regulations will help drive innovation across the country as reusable and easier-to-recycle items take their place in our economy.”
-Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change
6. Biden Signs Bill to Ban Goods Made by Uyghur Slave Labor
The White House says President Joe Biden signed into law Thursday a bill that bans the import of good produced by Uyghur slave labor.
The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which got final Congressional approval last week after a year of negotiations, bans all imports from China’s Xinjiang region into the United States unless companies can show the U.S. government “clear and convincing evidence” their supply chains have not used the labor of ethnic Muslims enslaved in Chinese camps.
7. A teacher learned one of her students might go hungry over winter break. She now feeds thousands of kids each year.
Elementary schoolteacher Turquoise LeJeune Parker was a few days away from the start of her holiday vacation when she received a text message from the mother of one of her second-grade students. The parent wondered if Parker knew where she could find food for her children during the school’s two-week winter break because her refrigerator and pantry were almost empty. Her kids relied on free school breakfasts and lunches to get them through the day.
“This mom told me she wasn’t worried about herself, but she couldn’t let her kids go without food for those two weeks,” she recalled. “I told my husband about it, and we knew we had to do something.”

After a weekend of indulgence and shopping, in the United States, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving has earned the designation of Giving Tuesday.
WHAT IS #GIVINGTUESDAY?
We have a day for giving thanks. We have four for excessive shopping. Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back. On Tuesday, December 3, 2019, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.
In that spirit, I’d like to extend a gentle reminder that we have several active charity drives running right now, all for worthwhile charities that could use a helping hand, especially during the busy holiday season, when giving tends to decline.
LOUIS’ DRIVE
Louis supports so many charities, it’s often hard to decide which one to support for the annual drive. This year’s choice is Stand Up To Cancer.
DONATE HERE
There are also 2 other drives associated with Louis -
in 2016, the Tomlinson family, and the fandom, lost a guiding light when Louis’ mum Jay passed away. In her memory, we have an ongoing drive to benefit Bloodwise, a a UK based charity dedicated to funding research into all blood cancers including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, as well as to offering information and support to blood cancer patients. Bloodwise's vision is to beat blood cancer.
DONATE HERE
Sadly, tragedy visited the Tomlinson family again in early 2019, with the passing of his younger sister Felicite’, affectionately known as Fizzy. In her memory, we have an ongoing drive to benefit The Good Grief Trust - a UK based bereavement support program.
DONATE HERE
HARRY’S DRIVE
This year, we’re returning to Drop4Drop for Harry’s drive. Drop4Drop believes that everyone, everywhere, has the right to clean water. We are raising money for this charity to celebrate Harry’s birthday and are working towards providing an entire community with a sustainable source of clean drinking water.
DONATE HERE
In addition to Drop4Drop, we also have an ongoing drive for Stand Up to Cancer in memory of Harry’s stepfather, Robin Twist, who passed away from cancer in 2017.
DONATE HERE
LIAM’S DRIVE
Our chosen charity for Liam’s drive is once again The Way Youth Zone, a children’s activity center based right in his hometown of Wolverhampton. The Way offers youths and teens a safe, inclusive, diverse, and affordable place to go in their leisure time. Due to a generous donation from Liam himself, we achieved our 2017 fundraising goal and followed that up with reaching goal again in 2018 and 2019!
It’s never too late to get a start on next year’s goal, though, and in that light we’ve already established his drive for 2020.
DONATE HERE
NIALL’S DRIVE
Niall’s drive for 2020 has yet to be established, however donations can still be made to this year’s drive to benefit Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens, a cause he’s supported through his Horan and Rose Charity Golf event.
DONATE HERE
In the spirit of Giving Tuesday, please consider donating to any or all of these worthy charities.
