So, I’ve read the Utena manga, and here are my thoughts

There’s a 4-chapter long prologue that gives us little glimpses into what Utena’s life was like before transferring to Ohtori Academy, and honestly, I don’t think any of that was necessary. So I’m glad that they left all that out in the anime.

Manga Saionji is somehow even more of a bastard than his anime counterpart.

Touga seems to share WAY more panel time with Utena than Anthy does. In fact, the manga seems to treat Anthy more like an afterthought, despite her being the deuteragonist.

Miki, Juri, and Wakaba are all really unlikable compared to their anime counterparts.

Kozue is just Nanami without any of the charm or nuance.

Speaking of which, Nanami herself isn’t even in the manga at all! BOOOOO!!! 👎👎👎

Akio has none of the creepiness or realism that made his character so terrifying in the anime. He’s literally just a Saturday morning cartoon villain.

I’m sorry, I really wanted to like the manga, but having just watched the anime beforehand, I was sorely disappointed. This isn’t even like a Sailor Moon situation where SOME things worked better in the 90s anime, while other things worked better in the manga. No, this is like one of those rare instances where anime writers take a very basic, run-of-the-mill shoujo manga, and doing something much better with it. At least the artwork for the manga was pretty.
