Steve MacDonald of Gorguts

Steve MacDonald of Gorguts

Steve MacDonald was born in October 17th, 1971 , in Canada. There is very little known about his life, but at some point he gained an interest in music, and learned to play the drums. He is listed as having played the drums for 3 different bands, the first being Sadistic Vision from 1988-1990, Asgard in 1998, and most notably, Gorguts from 1993-1995, and 1998-2002.

The only album to feature him with Gorguts was their 2001 release of ‘From Wisdom To Hate’. The album was the band’s fourth release, and afterwards, would mark a long hiatus for the band. On October 17th, 2002, Steve took his own life by hanging himself. Most sources state that he had battled with depression for years. There does not seem to be a find a grave page in memorial to him, and it is unknown if a burial was had. In 2002 Luc LeMay, the leader of Gorguts, had posted on the band’s website stating that Steve had taken his life. Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any archived version of the website that seems to show this message today, and the current version of the Gorguts website doesn’t seem to list any news at all, let alone anything that you can go back through.

News articles from 2002 quoted what LeMay said on the website though, which was:

“It’s with great sadness that I write these words for you Steve, my acolyte, my accomplice, my friend. Your talent hit me the first time that I heard you play. Your talent can resume you. It’s also that talent that fed my musical flame for almost a decade. We both lived great experiences and magical were the moments when we’ve put our sense of creation together. Steve Cloutier (bassist) and myself will always keep a great memory of you close in our hearts how great a musician you were. May your soul rest in peace. We will miss you.”

After Steve’s death, Luc decided to end the band. Gorguts officially disbanded in 2005, and remained on hiatus until 2008, where LeMay decided to reform the band with a new lineup. In a 2013 interview, LeMay stated of that time:

“When I decided to end the band in 2002 or 2003…after Steve MacDonald passed away, I was done with music and I wanted to devote myself to woodworking full time. I was very happy with all the achievements that the band accomplished so it was all good for me…..no bitterness and no feeling of unfinished business.”.

In 2012, long time Gorguts member, Steeve Hurdle, passed away from post-surgical complications. There does not seem to be a find a grave or other type of memorial site for him. He was 40 years old.

In 2013, Gorguts released the album ‘Colored Sands’. The album gained tons of praise, with high ratings from multiple reviewers. As of 2020, Gorguts is in the work of creating new material.

In Summer 2020, Random Records released the debut album by Unconscious Honey, Being A Stranger, a collection of future synth-pop classics written by Björn Trenker that featured all lead vocals sung via a robotic vocoder effect. Co-produced with husband Paul Bonomo, aka Snax, it distilled Trenker’s life experiences into unique pop creations. Influences ranged from early 90’s pop like Deee-Lite, Army Of Lovers, and Betty Boo to the cinematic aesthetics of Cassavetes, Kubrick and Todd Haynes, to the life and work of authors Gloria Steinem and Samuel Steward. Positive responses included online magazine Kaltblut naming the album one of the best dance music albums in 2020. Now, Random is proud to present Unconscious Honey’s second collection, Loose Beginnings, which collects all the songs from the debut, now reinterpreted by an exciting array of queer guest vocalists, all with ties to the open and diverse German capital of Berlin. Participants were given freedom to bring their own unique personality to the songs and the results are intriguing, with new dimensions and human textures added to each. Trenker expands on the concept: “Loose Beginnings tells a piece of my queer life story. I wanted to communicate that openly and unfiltered. And through these new recordings, my songs themselves become ‘loose beginnings’ for new protagonists.” Three exciting dance floor filling remixes round out the set. The guest list includes tremendous artists, all at different stages in their musical journey. Joey from the Netherlands, currently working on her own debut album, is a star on the rise, and offers her distinctive and soulful voice on “Being A Stranger” and “Good Light”. Swedish born Ed Astronaut only recently started pursuing his musical aspirations — a ‘loose beginner’ if you will — so he shines on the title track. On “Sleepless”, Mavin is joined by fierce glam singer Dan Perry, currently fronting his own band Merely Minds. Grume, who hails from Hungary and has already made a name for himself in the post-industrial band LATH, takes on the brooding “Abandoned To Desire”, while French-Swiss musician and dear friend Steev Lemercier provides his unique blend of light and darkness on “Radiate”. Artist and musician Jon Campbell, who made waves recently with two baroque pop albums, was the perfect choice to handle “Darkroom Tease”. And finally, there’s electronic soul musician and co- producer Snax, who brings baritone, falsetto and a choir to “High Strung”. In addition to the re-sung recordings, this collection features three exciting remixes, tailor-made for when clubs finally reopen their doors. Berghain/Panorama Bar resident DJ ND Baumecker and Snax have teamed up as Snecker. Not only do they mold “Casual Touch” into their own psychedelic four-on-the-floor style, but they involve themselves in the concept of the album with a little re-singing as well. Snax then assumes his Box Office Poison persona to serve up an epic big club, ‘90s-style deep dub of “Abandoned To Desire”. Finally, French producer and sound artist Electrosexual delivers audio carnal delights in his Extended Pleasure remix of “Darkroom Tease”. The Food

I have actually really enjoyed this challenge. It was a fun and enlightening experience for me. My meals mostly consisted of cereal, peanut butter sandwiches, and spaghetti, which got a little tiring, but I enjoyed all the food. I'd have to increase my variety if this was gonna be a longer term thing. My favorite variation of spaghetti was something I've done in the past but with fresh vegetables. For this challenge I had to make it with canned, but it was still good. 

Asian Spaghetti Recipe (makes 2 servings):

1 can of veggies (drained, used carrots/peas)

1 can black beans (drained)

2 eggs

1 lb chicken breast (cooked, shredded)

Cooked spaghetti

Teriyaki Sauce (about 3 tablespoons, or to taste)

For this version of the recipe I cooked everything separately then tossed all of the ingredients together in a sauce pan. So, I had some cooked chicken and spaghetti, cooked the eggs, and threw all of that with the veggies, beans, and teriyaki sauce and cooked to warm. It felt like a feast!
