Adam Rippon Talks Finding His Gay Power, Fetish-Inspired Costumes
Being yourself can take you places. If you’re Adam Rippon, born and raised in Scranton, Pennsylvania, it can take you all the way to Pyeongchang, South Korea, where the 28-year-old set fire to the ice last February, becoming the first openly gay male athlete to win a medal — a bronze — for Team USA in a Winter Olympics.
Rippon’s mere existence as a brazenly gay global inspiration with a tongue as sharp as the blades on his skates is notable. Writer Peter Moskowitz recently celebrated Rippon in a piece for Splinter titled “The Faggy Magic of Adam Rippon.” And at a Stars on Ice show in Detroit, Michigan, in April, Rippon garnered by far the most enthusiastic response, winning applause from tween girls, a squadron of proud queers, and suburban moms, alike. Reese Witherspoon loves him. So does Elmo. And like any good mother, Sally Field tried to set him up with her gay son.
Rippon would make his Dancing with the Stars (DWTS) debut a couple weeks after our call, slaying a Vogue-fortified cha-cha to RuPaul’s “Sissy That Walk.” I caught up with the phenom via phone as he put on his face inside the locker room of a Rhode Island arena (a Stars on Ice stop). Rippon opened up about how booze kills his wit game and what he tells guys on Tinder who want a second chance, all the while, being his irresistible self.

I want to give you a phone hug and say thanks for giving this 35-year-old man a new level of realness to aspire to.
I’m hugging you back.
You stood next to Britney Spears at the GLAAD Media Awards recently for a pic. I hear she liked the way you smelled.
Yes, she did. I congratulated her on her award, and she was like, “You smell really nice,” and I was like, “Thank you so much, ’cause that’s so important to me.”
Your fellow gay Olympian, [freestyle skier] Gus Kenworthy, kissed you on stage that night. How exactly would you describe your relationship with Gus at this point?
Umm [laughs], so, I mean, we’re just friends, obviously. His boyfriend was backstage laughing at him, and so he was just trying to be funny. Gus is a nut.
But you’re so close. And both of you being gay Olympians, it seems you’ve really bonded.
Oh, absolutely. We’re just like brothers — brothers who kiss, I guess. But no, I love him. He’s so nice, and we’re very good friends.
What was it like competing against Tonya Harding on Dancing with the Stars?
It’s not a super big deal, but I think she’s got a lot going on, so I’m just gonna let her do her own thing, probably. Probably best.
Team Tonya or Team Nancy?
Well, I mean, Tonya tried to kill someone, so I’m Team Nancy, probably.
What did you think of I, Tonya?
I loved it. I thought Margot Robbie [who played Harding] was great. Amazing.
Who would you cast as Adam in I, Adam?
Well, Margot did so well. So, maybe Margot Robbie?
Who inspires your on-ice style?
The skating world inspires it a little bit, and then… you’re gonna know that I’m trashy. I look at like, um, sex stuff and stuff people wear — harnesses and stuff — and the design is quite amazing. I bring [stuff] to my costume designer, and we make them more appropriate for a competition.
For a PG audience?
Yes. Actually, it’s not for that audience. But I make it for them.
That harness you wore to the Oscars in March: Where is it?
It’s in [fashion designer] Jeremy Scott’s office. The suit was by Moschino, so it was from Jeremy’s office and he lent it to me. I’m obsessed with Jeremy. He’s amazing.
youtube
Do you get to keep these costumes?
I keep my own costumes. Because, like, I bought them, outright. But the Oscars outfit was for the runway — so, from the red carpet back to the office.
Hard to give that up. So many opportunities to wear something like that.
I know! Like to a wedding. The grocery store.
Were you a sassy kid?
I don’t think I realized how sassy I was till I was at the Olympics and people were like, “Ahahaha, you’re so sassy.” And I was, “Ahahaha… you think so?” And they’re like, “Oh yeah, you’re, like, sassy.” And I was like, “I just thought I was fresh?” And they’re like, “No, you’re sassy.” Oh. OK.
Who inspires your sassiness?
The person who inspires me to be sassy is my mom.
So it’s in the blood.
[Laughs.] Yeah, it’s definitely in the blood. It’s something I can’t control.
Born this way.
Born this way, for sure. Genetics.
Your future: What’s off the table? Where do you draw the line?
Like, I’m not gonna do porn. That’s drawing the line, I guess. I don’t think I would do a reality show — I mean, I did Dancing with the Stars. That’s a reality show. I’m not gonna do, like, Big Brother or anything.
You’re getting a lot of offers. What percentage are you turning down?
I’m talking a little bit to everybody. But honestly, my schedule’s so crazy right now, I barely even know where I am.
The media loves getting you drunk.
Here’s the thing: I don’t drink a lot. Barely anything. And so everyone’s like, “Haha, come on the show and just have drinks!” And I’m like, “OK.” So, I’ll have a little bit, but I feel like I’m way funnier not drunk. I’m not as sharp, I’m not as witty; I’m not myself when I’m drunk. I mean, I like to be in the moment. If I’m in the moment, I can focus, and then I can be quick and witty.
You’ve been on this wild ride: the Olympics, Stars on Ice, Dancing with the Stars. How will you spend a day off when you finally get one?
Um, probably napping.
The whole day?
The whole day.
You have a new man, Jussi-Pekka Kajaala. He’s very good-looking.
I do. He’s super cute, but more than that, he’s super nice and funny.
Before you met, what criteria did you have for a boyfriend?
I really wasn’t looking for anybody. I was on Tinder just for fun. If you’ve ever been on Tinder, you know how you swipe left and right, and it basically turns into this game?
Oh yeah. It’s like the new Hot or Not.
It’s absolutely that. My criteria for a good boyfriend would be somebody who has passion. Passion is super important to me because, no matter what you do, if you have passion for it, then that’s kind of what life is all about — that you have passion for something. [Laughs.]
I’m being so serious. Usually when I get asked this question, I’m like, “a job, goes to the gym” — which is also important.
How many people on Tinder believed you were really Adam Rippon?
Nobody gave a shit that I was Adam Rippon. But I can tell you that everyone I ever matched with who ghosted on me has messaged me since the Olympics. My favorite is, “Oh, it’s been a while. How ya doing?” And I’m like, “Bye.”
You give them more than they deserve, honestly.
Usually I don’t answer.
Do you expect there will be a day when an openly gay figure skater can just be a figure skater?
Yeah. And I hope there’s a day that an openly gay Olympian will just be an Olympian. But I think right now it’s important to share your story.
For me, it’s not being gay that I share; I share my coming out. It’s not like, “Oh, I’m gay and I’m powerful” — which is, like, so true. It was [during] my coming out experience when I started to really own who I was and that’s where I found a lot of power. I was always me, but I didn’t always own it. And when I owned it, that’s when I found I was my strongest.
Have you had any particularly moving exchanges with young queer fans?
Yes. There’ve been many. I’ve run into a few young people who told me they tried to kill themselves at one point, which is incredibly hard to hear, especially from really young kids.
It’s bizarre to be thanked for just being who you are, and for someone to tell you that you really helped them, it’s incredibly humbling. I was not expecting that kind of response after the Olympics.
Do you feel pressure to act or be a certain way because of that?
No more than the way that I’ve been acting.
Good. To end, which Golden Girl are you?
Probably Blanche. Isn’t everyone Blanche? And I’m a little — OK, I’m mostly Dorothy.
It’s the snark.
It is the snark.

“I TOOK A PHOTO WITH AN ONCOMING TRAIN!!!” - EPISODE 2
Me not being first boot??? *NUT BUTTON MEME* Amanda slaying and staying??? *NUT BUTTON MEME* Carson going and me, Liana, Christine, Lily, and Sam still being here even though we aren't officially aligned???? *NUT BUTTON MEME*
Ahhh me and kait did that i didnt expect it, im not sure how everything worked ut but it was wild whew, so many votes, im wary of kait cause she mightve lied to me but im hoping i can trust her
i only sent 1 pic for immunity so then i get lowest and i have chance of getting to cave or exile or whatever the heck and then hopefully i get idol and win the whole game woohoo
Well, that was a messy af tribal but it worked! I mean after the hell I went through, voting rob, then voting Amanda, then voting daisy only to find out I was too late and had to stick with rob! Like wtf. And for daisy to go home on a 3-2-1-1-1 with 2 null votes. Like ok. And now we have a selfie olympics!!! Currently I'm sitting pretty with a 30% advantage in the challenge and 84 photos of things with the beginning letter for M or T!!!! I really would like to win this and stay immune for as long as humanly possibly lol. These tribals are messy right now because loyalties are just being formed Speaking of loyalties!! AMANDA!! I already love her #ThanksAHud! And I'm so glad that we are buddies! I'm just hoping that things work out for the both of us
That vote was a mess it seemed on Rob and Kait's tribe. Glad they stayed and Christine survived too. I'm not surprised Kait's tribe already voted for her, meanwhile the rest of us are sitting over here like: https://68.media.tumblr.com/894a6591ab3e2d171e8fec5d31ecbaeb/tumblr_omkup57QeN1r1gu3po1_400.gif
So Darian wins immunity.... https://media2.giphy.com/media/Rhhr8D5mKSX7O/200.webp#6 but I am also like https://media0.giphy.com/media/IqO3mXbMLztHa/200.webp#4 See, I love Darian, but the issue is, I'm not sure if i can trust him, so he sort of needs to go soon, but I see him sort of clean sweeping these immunities and that makes me a little worried honestly. I don't know what to expect this time around, and I am about to start sweating.... https://media0.giphy.com/media/VB5WwlZIt8eRy/200.webp#1
I'm a mess *takes a shot of vodka* I had 125 photos and forgot to turn them in. I TOOK A PHOTO WITH AN ONCOMING TRAIN!
This feeling around camp has been so strange and I'm not sure if it's because I won or just because every tribal isn't gonna be the same. I had more people talking to me for the first tribal like right after results were posted and serious game talk with the whole tribe. Yesterday night only Sam, Lily, Christine and Dan messaged me but we didn't even talk game. (Well I guess that's about the same amount of people, but like the conversations were less in depth like they were the first time.) I just feel aimless in this game and I don't really have a good strategy. I'm not even sure I want to make it far because it always gets ugly once you get far enough. Lily just solidified our alliance of 4 (Dan, me, Sam, and her) and I think it'll be easy enough to ride it out with them for a while. I'm wary because I don't have anyone I'm really close to (because these are people I usually don't play with!) so I kinda feel like I'm on the bottom. Lily and Dan seem to closest and I know in the past Sam will have multiple close allies and not necessarily stay loyal to one overall. Kelsey freaking randomly disappeared again! If anything I'd trust him a bunch because he's new and I can influence him more easily probably into giving me information and voting with me, but I can't do that with this weird continued activity/inactivity. Might he actually be a catfish? We will never know. Also!! Silly Gabby and Jonny having too much fun in One World last night. I knew Jonny was in Rakiura but that's basically it. Now I know they know each other irl probably thanks for the tea y'all!! (ricky, goodness, you have too many friends in this game since I'm pretty sure you know sara irl too with all these Washington/barista coincidences!)
Moments later...
Oh! Yeah I forgot to mention that I'm trying to get the tea about the loser place since unfortunately I did not lose. I'm not close to Veronica (as in I have not talked to her since Day 1) so I have low chances of finding out from her, but I talked to Billy last night and asked him to ask Chrissa about it. Though he said earlier how he's not close to Chrissa so I'll probably end up asking her myself! :/ Since I don't plan on going to loser place, I need to make friends with everyone who goes so they can give me all of their idols/advantages...or at least agree with me on how to use them!!
I want Sam gone!!!
Why was I stupid enough to pick the thing that makes me inelegible to compete in challenges? I'm an idiot.
so i don't know how to vote this round and no one is talking! like are you guys serious omg
Sorta feeling indifferent about the challenge I tried super hard! But either way congrats to all that won! Someone had like 100ish I think I saw? Oh hellll no girl doing the most. Nervous for trible tonight it'll be my first! I don't think I'm going home though, I talked to Jordan and he said hunter because he didn't submit anything for the challenge and is pretty quiet. I don't even know the kid but as long as it's not me ya know! TBH if it had been my decision I would have voted Julia. The girl has "I love being beautiful" or some shit like that as her fucking quote on skype like ew girl your hella extra.
i like kait and amanda
I'm just like so over Sam so I'm trying to get him out as revenge for Eddie. Fake ass. If I can't get him out in Emathia, might as well get him out here.
20 minutes later...
My allies are Rhea, Kait, and Darian (even if he did vote for me). I like Emma but I know she's probably upset about the first vote. Sam and Steven, you can go. I can try and bring in Andie and Amanda close to me, but it will be fishy to do it now. That's on my tribe. I like Jenn too, and Sam, and Shea <3. You never know in this game, I might go out, but I think my position in the tribe may increase? I can see it. I love Rhea so much. She's the purest cinnamon roll I've ever met. <3 100%
OKAY! So now that I actually have time, I've been talking to people on my tribe a lot more. I've been talking to Billy, Chrissa, Jonny and Gabby and they all are reasonable people. Whilst talking with them we talked about how Hunter is pretty inactive in the game and that we could look at him as a potential first boot from the tribe. The whole twist of us being in One World and only have individual immunity has kind of flipped the entire game on it's head. Usually, weaker members of the tribe are targeted because they're a liability but weaker players don't really matter as much this season because tribal immunity exists. Which means that people that are stronger in challenges may start to be targeted to give those weaker people a better chance at winning individual. Honestly, good job Ricky and Monty because I've never seen this before and it's kind of fun.
Well I didn't win the last challenge... My document glitched and I lost most of my pictures, but the fact that I would have won still keeps me going!
Kait is the best duo every she cuts the shit and gets right to the point and we murder everyone together its so fun. That being said I can't wait until i get to a point where i can work with my loves Luke and Dan. Also im going out and ACTUALLY having a social life so this is all the updates youre getting from me tonight! Wooooo
i cant believe i worked to get a self vote when i already had one like the FUCK why do bad things happen to slightly nice people
I literally don't know what's happening bc I've been gone all day bc it's spring break, but I know I'm not going so BLESS
Well. Officially in an alliance with dan, Sam, and Liana. I love it. We are called the game changers but I wonder if everyone is doing that right now. Veronica should be going tonight, but I question if it should be shea. But I think Veronica is a good vote right now and shea would be better for the following vote. I don't know honestly if either goes it doesn't matter too much to me. I love this whole tribe but someone has to go.
I confess to shovin a whole bag a jellybeans up my ass.
so basically this round i lost immunity again but idc bc i know these ho's and they not gonna do anything... I hope. So basically the plan was for veronica to throw immunity and get last so she could go on the reward and scout it out for steven and i bc us 3 r in a alliance. she did but she got a self vote. basically everyone wanted to vote veronica but bc of sheas fight with carson we r voting shea. i feel bad bc i like shea but i cant lose veronica this early. i put my neck out on the line so if i get sent home ill be sad but ill def understand why
ALLL RIGHT so this round i haven't done much/heard anything BUT IM WATCHING BAYKOR WILSON PLAY MUSIC AT JONNY FAIRPLAYS BIRTHDAY PARTY AND THE DEAD GRANDMA IS HERE
My drunk ass needs to write a confessional in the next hour oops!! I hope that Veronica goes but apparently it's either Veronica or Shea. I just really hope it's not me. My tribe is quiet as fuck so I have no clue what's really hoping. Here's hoping my drunk ass makes it through
i'm dead @ finding the idol. my goal is to idol liana out i think that'd be a boppin time, but for now i just wanna like continue not really doing a whole lot and let rob keep being out there on everyone's radar while i just say that no one talks to me so i can get more tea from them bc they think i'm in their back pocket. voting sam tonight.............i'm poppin' bottles! nah idrc about him leaving, he never talks to me and it's always like really forced when i go out of my way every fucking time to start a conversation with him. it's just really frustrating like i hate this tribe so much. social game says hello, freaks! i kinda hate having the idol because it's so much pressure to like play it at the right time and premerge is so delicate, especially with so many people and with me not really having a TIGHT alliance i just whew.
I think I'm going :( no ones socializing with me. Billy is just a cop out, says he doesn't want to throw out a name. Pssstt
My, my, my. What a LOVELY week this has been. So currently, our tribe is back at it again with dat council swag. I didn't do well in immunity, like I knew I would. However, if anyone can win, I'm very glad Miss Moana SNATCHED the title. Last tribal council, I flopped. I was inactive and that's unacceptable so this week I'm really pushing myself to be a deciding factor force like Ariana Grande deciding to snatch weaves when she breathes. With my reputation currently, I don't think people really assume that I even have it in me to be strategic. Little do THEY know...they are wrong. AHAHAHAHAHAHHAA. Now, Seamus has informed me that the vote is Shea. However, Seamus is a GOOBER. Shea and I have really become close and the fact that Seamus literally pms me to vote Shea BEFORE asking me how I am shows his inner Kesha: his True Colours. I don't really like the fact that Seamus is just treating me like a free vote because I know what his intention. I already can smell that he wants to drag me as a cute, innocent vote until he makes the merge with his best friends and takes me out. THAT'S going to be a no zone. Although that is the persona I'm going for, I feel like Seamus already has suuuuch a big plan for getting to the end and...I'm not a part of that. And if you're going to count me out, henny, count on getting to stepping. Or something exotic like that, tee hee~! I feel really nervous for Shea. I told her that Seamus was wanting to eliminate her and she immediately almost spoiled everything. She's an emotional player and that's the kind of I want to keep around. Those are the ones who never see through my fakeness and the kind that are targeted before good ol' sweetheart me. The only other option is Veronica so for this week, I'm going to try and flip a few people to do so. The last vote was so unified that it's quite scary actually...if things keep going the way they are, I have no doubt that eventually it'll be my log chopped by the axe. My advantage for this week's vote is that no one really has a reason NOT to trust me. With Veronica, they KNOW she's a scrappy player. And I believe I can use that to my advantage. Y'all don't know me, y'all don't know what I've been through! And NO ONE is going to believe that cutesy little Arianator weeabo is pulling strings. I learned from my past Tumblr competitions that playing aggressively gets out fast. I know now playing passively gets you treated like a child. Here...everything has to be subtle. Small little touches, here and there. And if you do enough of that, maybe the trickle of water can erode the rock. That's what I'm hoping to do here. If somehow, we can do the impossible, not only will I establish myself as a real C.O.M.P.E.T.I.T.O.R in this tribe, but I'll have pulled off a blindside that's really shocking and game changing. Maybe it's a bit too early to be calling shots...but I've got to do something. I think people already have caught on to the fact that something's afoot and the alarms are already blaring. I'm past the point of no return, so even if I wanted to, I can't allow myself to have regrets! I carry the name of a queen of BBCAN and a king of The Vampire Diaries. I'm here to slash throats, save my family and wear ugg boots. And hopefully...this is the start of something legendary~! Wish me luck, darlings! Certainly sincerely, Canada's Self-Proclaimed Favourite; Kelsey Mikaelson! <3
ALRIGHT...So I'm really hoping Shea goes this tribal cause like....He can't be chill for one second in this game. Literally the plan was to get Veronica out but once he hears his name he quits? C'mon now.. Don't even get me started on Kelsey telling him his name was thrown out cause like!?!? We're doing that so no one gets in trouble here why are you doing this!?!? I just don't understand Kelsey like I really wanted to like her but...She's on thin ice at this point. I just hope this isn't a ploy and something goes wrong but I guess we'll see!
So like wtf is happening, cause I don't have a clue. I'm loyal to Emma and I guess maybe Rhea. Idk Rhea just talks to me sometimes but right now that is good enough for me. Right I'm just waiting for a tribe swap so we can stop going to tribal every round

DC ExtraTime on Tumblr: Cory’s Famous Football Friends
FROM DCBLOG: http://dc408dxtr.blogspot.com/2017/05/dc-socialpulse-challenge-invasion-final.html
At the halfway point of this Invasion final, Cory knows he is in for a battle if he wants to make a run at his first Challenge title. We just saw him struggle with Camila and Nicole, and is in dead last among the guys, but there's still a lot left to go. Often, it's how you close down the stretch that will get you some good luck... take what happened with him & Mitch on Bloodlines when they won the last two regular challenges and made a strong Day 2 showing in Berlin Olympic Stadium to place 2nd in the final. And if he needs some inspiration, Cory can look to the support he has of fans and friends he's met along the way, including two here in ExtraTime.
As we covered here last week, NFL fans starving for something football related this long offseason were afforded the ultimate treat when Philadelphia hosted the NFL Draft on the Rocky Steps at the Museum of Art last weekend. A record crowd of 250,000 packed Ben Franklin Parkway in front of the museum to watch the three days of this annual spring ritual where Myles Garrett was picked #1 by the Browns, where the Bears shocked everyone with the very next pick in trading up from the Niners, and dreams coming true for many college players. And of course, those notorious fans there were given something to boo at in giving commissioner Roger Goddell the appropriate Philly treatment in a city known for booing everyone from their own teams to Santa Claus.
After his original Real World Ex-Plosion season ended three years ago, Cory had the opportunity to soak up the fame a little bit in meeting two NFL stars: one who was a star back then but would have to endure rough waters, the other was just drafted and would begin his ascent to status of a giant in the Big Apple. We've dug up two photos from his Twitter & Instagram @MTVCoryWharton, and given that one has recently changed addresses during this period of free agency and the challenger being in this final, this felt the perfect time for us to share these pics with you.
● First, the legend. Ten years ago, Adrian Peterson was in that spot waiting for his name to be called onto the Radio City Music Hall stage. After a solid high school career in Texas, he went to Oklahoma in 2004 and had a record freshman college career: 1,925 rushing yards, 11 100-yard games including 9 in a row, and finishing second to USC's Matt Leinart in the Heisman Trophy voting. After a light 1,200-yard season due to an early injury, in his junior year Peterson's dad, Nelson, was released from prison and was in the crowd when Peterson played Iowa State and in the last drive broke his collar bone when he dove into the end zone for the winning TD. He missed the rest of the regular season but did return for the Fiesta Bowl where he had a TD and 77 yards before Boise State's "Statue of Liberty" play upset the Sooners in what would be his final college game after 4,041 rushing yards.
Peterson would forgo his senior season for the NFL, and his name was picked 7th when the Minnesota Vikings drafted him in 2007, and instantly made an impact in being one who the Purple People Eaters could build their team around. It didn't take long for AP to make his mark: two games with 200+ yards rushing including a league record 296-yard game vs. the Chargers, and Offensive Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowl MVP honors. A year later came his first Rushing Title, including a 192-yard game where he scored the winning TD vs. the Packers, among 1,760 in 2008. Two more 1,000 yard rushing seasons then came, followed by an ACL/MCL injury at the end of 2011. He came back the next season more than strong: 2,097 yards - becoming only the 7th running back in NFL history to eclipse 2,000 rushing yards in a single season. After a late 26-yard run, Peterson only needed 9 yards to break Eric Dickerson's 2,105 mark set in 1984, but as the Vikings were playing for a playoff berth they opted for the clinching field goal and he fell short... but was both the NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year.
In 2014, Cory had the chance to meet Adrian when the both ran into each other in Las Vegas for Memorial Day Weekend when he captioned, "Ran into Adrien Peterson on the strip, best Running back in the league hands down." But it was during this time that it would all come crashing down: in October 2013, personal matters sidelined Peterson but was later revealed that his 2-year old son was hospitalized and then die from injuries suffered from an assault by the live-in boyfriend of his mom. A year later, he would be indicted on charges of reckless or negligent injury to a child stemming from photos posted by TMZ of his 4-year-old son having slash-like wounds after being beat up around a tree for bad behavior. It was front page news in and outside the sports world and a black mark for the NFL, which suspended him for the rest of the 2014 season. He ultimately won reinstatement months later and returned with a strong 2015 season in winning the rushing title for a 3rd title (1,485 yds). But injuries derailed his last season in purple & gold, where the Vikings cut him before a $18 million option would go into effect, and as a free agent, he signed a few weeks ago with the Saints.
And there's another link between Cory and AP: it's been documented, if you've been seeing the challenger's Instagram, about his ACL from all the pictures he's posted there in the surgeries done on his ankle and whether or not it can withstand this final. So far, it has not hampered him, but Cory has something in common with AP as they have had to endure having surgery done on that crucial part of the leg which has meant that when it's torn, the season is done like what we've seen so many athletes go through across all sports. Cory's not alone.
● And second, the upstart. Earlier that May of 2014, Cory got a chance to hang out down in fellow future Underdog Tony's home turf of Baton Rouge, LA with someone who had just gotten drafted was spending the last month or so at home before heading up north. Odell Beckham, Jr. attended the same New Orleans high school - Isidore Newman School - that Peyton, Eli and Archie Manning went to, and made his own mark there. While he lettered in hoops and track, it was on the gridiron where he became the biggest star in his school: while he was a QB, running back and cornerback, it was at wide receiver that he excelled: as a senior in 2010, he caught 50 catches, had 19 touchdowns, and joined Manning sibling Cooper as the only two players in history to have a 1000-receiving yard season when he had 1,010. He stayed close to home in choosing LSU for college and was an All-SEC as a freshman and a leading wide-out in year 2. As a junior, he had his breakout in teaming with future Dolphin Jarvis Landry as one of the college game's top WR duos and both were named All-SEC also. In one of those games, Beckham returned a missed field goal attempt for a record-long 109 yards for a touchdown and held that record by himself until that Kick Six by Auburn's Chris Davis' vs. Alabama saw not only that record tied by surpassed in lore.
Like Peterson, Odell felt three years was enough and after a 2013 that saw him catch 57 for 1,117 receiving yards and win the Paul Hornung Award, he skipped his senior year for the big time, and the New York Giants drafted him 12th in the 2014 NFL Draft. Cory met him just after his Real World ended, and he captioned on Instagram on Draft Day, "With my boy @iam_obj3 down in Louisiana, Tonight we will see what NFL (team) picks him up, either way he's gonna ball out of the league. PEEP the dude in the back Photo bombing the picture though LOL." And he reposted the picture later in the season with the odd local in Louisiana's state capital photo bombing their shot he made a prediction too: "My boy @iam_objxiii should get Rookie of the Year in the NFL and he missed 4 games: BEAST." Cory was right.
Because of an injury, it took a little longer for Odell him to get into his rhythm, but it was under the Sunday night lights against the Cowboys in mid-November 2014 where everyone got to see OBJ for the first time. Of the 10 catches, 146 yards and 2 TD's that night, the one that brought him into the spotlight was the one where with full extension and diving backwards, he caught it with one hand. It left everyone from NBC analyst Cris Collinsworth to LeBron James to say it's the "catch of the year," and indeed it helped accelerate Odell into another level with a breakout rookie season that saw him garner all kinds of records and accolades, notching his 1,305 yards in 12 games - the 4th first-timer to garner that many receiving yards, and was the landslide choice for Offensive Rookie of the Year, as well as a Pro Bowl selection.
Not surprisingly, Beckham beat out Rob Gronkoski to become the youngest player ever to grace the cover of the Madden NFL video game series when he was named to that honor in 2015, and he slayed the curse generally given to those being on that cover by having career highs in his second season: 1,450 receiving yards, 13 touchdowns, another Pro Bowl and 10th on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2016 list. Last season... only better: reaching 200 receptions in only career 30 games on his way to 101 catches in 2016, 1,367 receiving yards, 10 TD's and a trip to Orlando for the Pro Bowl. And yes, there's also what else we've seen from him on field: getting into it and getting flagged four times in a 2015 game with the Panthers' Josh Norman, fined nearly $50,000 total for two penalties in a blindside hit on a Saints player and another for a dance celebration at Dallas; and catching 33 passes in one minute for a world record attempt at Super Bowl XLIX. And his dad, Odell Sr., was a minor character in the famed book Friday Night Lights which inspired that movie and TV show.
When we first saw Cory working out on that playground in his first episode, everyone knew that not only was he one of those seven chosen to go through the first "twist" Real World, but also he was cast with the spinoff show in mind. Yes, it will safe to admit that he's not performed perhaps as well this season as he has in his first two Challenges, but everyone will remember what you do in the final and he's in his second opportunity to win money. People have been expecting great things from him since he arrived in Turkey over a year ago, and a lot of fans have pegged him to be the face of this next generation of challengers who are now coming into this ecosystem.
Though Cory is still behind in 3rd, there's still a day & a half of this final left and a lot can still go down, and he's taken advantage of giving current guys leader CT the 5-minute time buster after winning the first night challenge and making his seemingly insurmountable lead look closer to him and Nelson. You can't count him out just yet - and things can happen with those comebacks we've seen before, but if Cory comes back and win, that will be fantastic. In having met Adrian and Odell, those two men have gone on to great things on Sundays and Cory knows that if you want to become great, you have to do something great when the lights shine brightest.
