Stream Reno I: Backdrops and green screens

One of the wins I had while on holiday last week was doing some art for my stream. Basically, I wanted something reminiscent of Fleischer cartoons, or Cuphead for the historically challenged, something that felt handmade.

So just now, I broke out and plugged in the inkjet, and in Paint Shop Pro we find in glorious 4K resolution, scaled down to fit the screen:

Yeah, I'm not a Treg Brown level background artist by any means. Acrylics on watercolour paper. Amateur cheap acrylics applied with cheap brushes at that. But the aesthetic is obvious: black and white, throwing back to the 70s or 80s.

Well, this is all about the background, so we need to welcome in Mister Green Screen! He's where the gameplay will be hiding, measuring 3072*1728px. I'm doing a lot of calculating y=(x/16)*9 to make sure everything's proportional.

So, the idea is that chat messages appear over the right hand side, overlaying the controls (note the channel selector buttons are set to channel 3), with my new hand-drawn avatar sitting in the bottom right, and along the bottom are places for stats as well as the Fountain Force 2 console. If you want to know more...

Much better, so let's copy merged and plonk this into the top left corner of the background!

Hmm. I think I might have to rescale the original background to be a little larger - basically slightly overlap the canvas. As you can see, the greenscreen slightly expands past the grey 'bezel' and doesn't quite look right. Not a problem!

Much better! Now my naughty little bun will be sitting closer to the screen and getting square eyes for sure.

So let's save that and try it out with Streamlabs. Unless Streamlabs crashes again. Streamlabs does not like starting, even in administrator mode, if anything else is running. Also, to hell with Pastebin. Pastebin is more like Spambin.

So! I maded scene. I putted picture in, added a green-screen filter, and lowered the brightness and - viola!

It's alive! Alive! Looks very handmade and blegh, but it's working so far!

Now I have a swag of A6 pieces of tracing paper to scan, scale, and colour in for PNGTuber. It's a very bare-bones av, where every time I start gum-flapping, Cranky turns his head to the viewer to talk.

Once I know that works, I'll be drawing cels for more involved animations. Oh, this is going to be interesting!
