So, I have a story idea for My Hero Academia that I’ve been wanting to bounce off of someone for a while now. You always seem pretty cool in asks and have a lot of fun AU’s, so I’d thought I’d ask you.

Izuku has gotten pretty used to people dismissing his quirk ramblings by the time he’s a pre-teen. Then one day he comes across a video online of someone talking about a hero’s quirk and sort of picking it apart, just like he does every day. He sees that the video has gotten a good amount of views and positive feedback, and it bolsters him to know that people out there do like to talk about this stuff. He notices something a bit off about one of the observations the person makes though, and feels bold enough to leave a comment about it. The person messages him back saying that the Izuku actually had a really good point, and that maybe he should make a video about it himself. And Izuku becomes inspired to do just that.

His first videos aren’t great, mainly just recordings of his usual mutterings. Some comments are mean about it, but a few provide constructive criticism about how he could make the videos better and make his point better understood. Izuku starts putting more planning into the videos, doing a bit of research and actually writing out scripts for himself, and they start to get better. A couple episodes get recognized by older and more popular channels, and that causes Izuku’s channel to become more well known.

Izuku is thrilled to have people who actually approve of his hobby, even if he’s never actually met them. He starts to recognize certain regulars, especially ones that leave comments that lead to discussions among the viewers and himself. Some people leave mean comments of course, but they never really say anything worse than Kacchan already does.

After his channel gains a certain amount of notoriety, people start to leave comments asking about his own quirk. He’s analyzed so many others, what does he have to say about his own? Izuku doesn’t want to tell them he is quirkless, because he’s afraid that they will take him less seriously or stop watching all together if they know, just like most everyone else has done. He doesn’t feel comfortable just ignoring it though.

One day when he’s having lunch his glass does that thing where water condenses in just the right way at the base of a glass that it starts sliding on it’s own, and he gets an idea. He can make people think he has a quirk. He’s mentioned in previous videos what type of quirks his parents had, so people would believe he has some kind of telekinesis. He practices enough that he figures out how to get the glass to slide when he wants it to, and during his next video he sets it up to slide toward his hand part way through. He acts super casual about it, and lets people think what they will.

People end up taking the bait. Izuku feels a bit guilty for the deception, but tells himself he’s not outright lying. One person comments it’s a shame he didn’t inherit his dad’s fire-based quirk, and suddenly Izuku is getting ideas. Could he find a way to make it look like he had? Would people believe it if he did? There’s only one way to find out.

After some research into sleight of hand and stage magic, Izuku is able to make it look like’s he’s accidentally coughing up smoke in one of his videos. People start debating in the comments about which is his real quirk and whether or not he could have inherited both. From there it starts to escalate. Izuku becomes curious to see how far he can push this. He keeps coming up with new quirks he could have and different ways to imply he has them. People start getting really into it. Entire threads are created trying to piece together the mystery Izuku is presenting them with. Some argue that he has an analysis quirk that he’s been using the whole time, and that he’s doing this to tease them for not realizing it. Others say he definitely has one of those quirks, and he’s challenging them to figure out which one it is. Some say he has an illusion quirk. Only a very small number put out that he might be quirkless and messing with them all.

Even with all the fake quirk shenanigans, Izuku makes sure that his video’s analysis content is still top notch. Because of this, a few students at UA end up showing one of videos to their teachers. Then some of the teachers start watching episodes that sound relevant to the topic they covering, and telling the students about it. At one point Present Mic mentions a video of Izuku’s in response to a caller question, and Izuku proceeds to lose his mind over that endorsement for a week.

In the grand scheme of things, this AU changes little. Izuku still ends up getting attacked by a sludge villain and meeting All Might. He still inherits One for All, and most of the events at school and with the League of Villains fold out in the same way. The difference is made in little things. Izuku becomes a bit more confident before UA, at least when it comes to his ability to analyze and make plans. Certain teachers recognize him during the entrance exam, and are delighted that they now know what Izuku’s ‘real’ quirk is. A number of the 1-A students recognize him, tell him how fun or useful they found his videos, and ask if he’ll give them advice later. Even some older students come up and tell him that such and such episode gave them new ideas on how to use their quirks in combat.

At the end of the day it’s not a huge difference, but all of them combined make a world of difference to Izuku.

So what do you think? I’d really like to get a more polished version down at some point, because I like the idea a lot. I do kind of worry about the whole ‘pretending to have different quirks in his videos’ part. Do you think that’s too out of character for Izuku?

AhhhH????? I would read 100k of this!! It’s super interesting, and I do like the idea of him teasing his viewers about what quirk he has. It’s a fun, harmless little thing, and if I know the internet, it would ABSOLUTELY help bring in the views lmao.

I’m super interested to see how this would affect canon though, in small but noticeable ways, how the people in his life see him.

All Might, who’s seen a couple of his vids (because at this point, who HASN’T?) despite being technologically illiterate. He’s always had a fondness for the boy who does such great quirk analyses, at the easy confidence he seems to portray in his audience, the kindness that shines through, the mischievousness, the resourcefulness in making it seem like he has all these different quirks. And then he meets Izuku, and he feels his heart break for him, and he’s amazed that even with the online fame, this boy is so genuinely modest.

There’s Aizawa, who watches all of Izuku’s videos, because having in depth knowledge of all kinds of quirks is especially important for a hero who doesn’t have a physical enhancement quirk of his own, a hero whose true strength lies in his mind. When Izuku is put into his class, Aizawa doesn’t immediately dismiss him. He knows the kid has the brains to be a truly amazing hero, and maybe now is the time for Aizawa to repay him for all the help he’s received from his videos in the past.

Imagine the sports festival - the name of his channel trending on twitter as people freak out about how the winner of the obstacle race is actually this famous youtube personality? Imagine the chaos, especially if he didn’t tell any of them that he entered UA. Or maybe he told them he entered, but didn’t specify which department

(because that seems to be Izuku’s theme these days. Now in addition to what quirk he has, people are arguing over whether or not he’s in the hero department.

“Of course he’s in heroics! He’s mentioned before how much he’s wanted to be in a hero since he was a child, you morons.”

“Just because he wants to be one doesn’t mean it’s possible for him though. He obviously has an analysis type quirk, so he’s gotta be in support or management.”)

Imagine people finally getting CLOSURE as they find out what his quirk actually is, and isn’t it so cheeky of him that the quirk he was “born with” was the one quirk he never teased in any of his videos.

He makes a sheepish apology video afterwards for nearly scaring his audience to death in his match against Todoroki, and he quietly makes his disapproval known when his fans start commenting about how that Bakugou kid is so villainous and shouldn’t have won the tournament.

Dear god, imagine the Stain incident! People seeing our boy almost carried off by a Noumu.

And once people know he’s in heroics, imagine his fans begging him to upload vlogs, the day in the life of a ua hero student. At first he refuses to, because he thinks his teachers would disapprove, but after UA’s reputation takes a hit with all the villain attacks, Izuku suggests the idea to Nedzu, to help show people that UA really is doing its all to help.

Imagine him giving a tour of class a’s dorm building, and getting ready for the cultural festival!

Imagine him meeting Gentle, and La Brava is lowkey salty about how many more views he has than them, but Gentle is quietly freaking out because he’s been a fan of Izuku’s channel since forever now???

Ahh, sorry for getting so carried away my dear, but this idea is just too good for me to leave alone!! I would definitely love to read this if you decide to continue it. The Tanzanites Down Under

March 12 - 28, 2019

Well it only took me 52 years, but I finally made it to Australia. I’ve wanted to go my whole adult life, and Oz did not disappoint!

Looking back on it now, I don’t know how we did so much in so little time. Every day was utterly packed, and for good reason. Two weeks just isn’t enough time to get it all done.

The thing that struck me most is how quickly the vistas change in the space of just a few miles. Rocky coastlines, lush rain forests, sandy beaches, sprawling vineyards ... all within a short drive of the urban centers of Melbourne or Sydney. It’s almost too much to take in.

Tuesday - Arrival Day

There is one down side about any trip to Australia, of course, and that’s the getting there part.

Oh. Holy. Hell.

Dallas to Sydney is seventeen hours. Seventeen very looooong hours that for me commenced at 10 pm Dallas time on Sunday. By the time I checked into my hotel in Melbourne around noon on Tuesday, I’d essentially been awake (I don’t sleep on airplanes) something like 36 hours. Nothing to do at that point but POWER THROUGH to a respectable bedtime!

Christian & Claudia arrived shortly before I did, so Al (our host) came and collected us for a preview of the city.

The first thing I noticed about Melbourne is the varied architecture ... magnificent Victorian structures right next to modern skyscrapers right next to 1930s art deco buildings. Much like the country itself, Melbourne crams a lot of diversity into a relatively small space.

Birgitte had arrived several days earlier and was off on a driving tour, but she joined us for an early dinner at Chin Chin - one of my favorite restaurants of the whole trip.

Wednesday - Melbourne Walking Tour & Queen Vic Market

Our first full day in Melbourne was a walking tour of the Shrine of Remembrance and the Royal Botanic Gardens, both of which were stunning.

The Shrine of Remembrance was built to honor Victorians who lost their lives in World War I. It’s one of the more thoughtful and impressive monuments I’ve seen anywhere.

The Royal Botanic Gardens cover 89 acres of public space in the middle of Melbourne and rival such privately-funded botanical gardens as the Dallas Arboretum.

Dinner that night was at Queen Victoria Market, where a multitude of vendors sell their crafts and international cuisine.

Al’s girlfriend Hope and his - now our - friend Kellie joined us for dinner, which was a little of this and a little of that.

I was introduced to a delicious Australian dessert called pavlova, which I highly recommend trying next time you’re down under.

Christian bought himself a Crocodile Dundee hat (as one does).

Thursday - 12 Apostles & Rain Forest #1

Our first road trip took us about three hours southwest of Melbourne to The Twelve Apostles, a spectacular section of eroded shoreline near Port Campbell that forms 12(ish) stacks that somehow came to be known as the apostles.

Birgitte decided to get up close & personal with the apostles in the front seat of a helicopter!

On the ride back to Melbourne, we drove along the Great Ocean Road, stopping in Lorne for a glass of wine, and a little further on, a stroll through the rain forest.

Friday - Wine Day

Friday was our first of several wine tastings, this one on the Mornington Peninsula. I was surprised at how many wineries there are, and I was particularly surprised at how GOOD Australian wine is, given that the only Australian labels we know of in the US are Barefoot and Yellow Tail (which incidentally can hardly be found in Australia)!

The drive back to Melbourne took us to Dromana for a stroll along Safety Beach.

This was also my first introduction to beach boxes - tiny little empty huts along the beach with no electricity or running water that people pay upwards of AUD $100k for. (And I totally get it, given the setting!)

Saturday Morning - Prahran Market

For our final morning in Melbourne, we started at Prahran Market, where I would be myself every Saturday morning if I lived in Melbourne. It’s basically Central Market on steroids. I’ve never seen anything like it. Fresh vegetables, meat, seafood, and prepared dishes as far as you can see.

We met up with the Melbourne crew for brunch at Gramercy Social before heading to the airport for a quick flight to Sydney.

Saturday Evening - First Night in Sydney

Like Melbourne, Sydney is very much a walking city. The evidence of this can be found on my iPhone, which registered in excess of 25,000 steps on just one day. I even lost a couple of pounds on this trip despite eating many meals that looked much like the one pictured above.

So as in Melbourne, day one was a walking day. Sydney is all about Queen Victoria, for whom the state is named. Victorian influences can be found everywhere - in the architecture, the street names, and the monuments.

Dinner that night was at Phillip’s Foote, a former Sailor’s bar, where one goes to cook one’s own steak on the barbie.

After dinner, we walked down to Sydney Harbor, where the postcard photos I’d seen since I was a child came to life. It was an especially poignant evening to be there, as the horrific shootings at Christchurch had happened just the day before, so the Opera House was illuminated with a silver fern, a national symbol of New Zealand.

As if on cue, the fireworks started the moment we arrived.

Sunday - A Good Day to Be Indoors!

Almost as an afterthought, I purchased a poncho just before I left Dallas. On Sunday, I was VERY glad to have done so! The skies opened up in the morning and it rained virtually the entire day.

So what better day to do museum and cathedral tours? We started at The Australian Museum, which is more or less a natural history museum, then walked through St. Mary’s Cathedral, and finally The Art Gallery of New South Wales.

I enjoyed the Australian Museum, but St. Mary’s and the Art Gallery of NSW were my favorites.

I especially enjoyed the aboriginal exhibit, created by artists from Australia’s indigenous community.

Another favorite was this painting called Holiday Sketch at Coogee (1888). Saro pointed it out because she knew we’d be standing in more or less the same spot a couple of days later.

And sure enough ...

The sun never really came out that day, but the rain let up enough to enjoy walking around and gawking at the incredible trees found all over Sydney, which look like they would be more at home in a sculpture museum than a city park.

Monday - Alarming Start to a Great Day

Nothing like waking up to a fire alarm! No need for panic, it turns out. One of our fellow hotel guests decided to do a little laundry and hang it from the fire sprinkler. (What could go wrong??) Turns out - the sprinkler system can flood the elevator shaft and cause the hotel staff to have to relocate EVERY SINGLE GUEST to a nearby hotel.

Evacuations and relocations notwithstanding, Monday was a good day. We did a nice walking tour, taking in more of the architecture and public spaces.

Monday night was opera night! A highlight of the trip, to be sure! The performance was Salome. It was - in a word - GRAPHIC. (And also a bit different than depicted in my childhood Sunday School lessons.) I thoroughly enjoyed it, though, if only for the venue.

Tuesday - Beach Walk & Bridge Climb

On Tuesday, I logged 24,962 steps (not including the 1,400+ steps it took me to walk up and down the Sydney Harbor Bridge).

The day started with a long and scenic coastal walk from Coogee Beach up to Bondi. In just a few miles, you come across one sandy beach after another ensconced in craggy, rocky shorelines.

Another HUGE highlight of the trip was climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge. Radka and I were supposed to do it together, but she had to cancel her trip at the last minute because her mum was ill and died just a few days before our trip. They were on my mind the whole time, though, and they climbed with me in spirit.

The bridge climb was FANTASTIC! Don’t go to Sydney without doing it! It’s not cheap, and it takes several hours of your time, but it’s well worth it. The views are incredible, and the tour guides tell great stories about the history of the bridge.

Wednesday - Wildlife Park & Blue Mountains

Wednesday was another road trip.

First we visited the Featherdale Wildlife Park.

From there we Headed up to Katoomba for a visit to the Blue Mountains.

I was again astounded by the panorama and the fact that you could go from mountaintop to rain forest in under two minutes.

Thursday - More Wine Tastings & Nelson Bay

Another road trip - this time up to Nelson Bay, with a stop at Tyrell’s Wines.

Friday - Last Night in Sydney

We got back from Port Nelson on Friday and enjoyed a final, casual night in Sydney. We started out at The Glemore Hotel for happy hour. This is a great place to see a bat show, notable because the bats are the size of ... I don’t know ... CONDORS ... as opposed to the bats we get in Texas, which are essentially the size of sparrows.

For dinner, Al took us to Myung Jan for Korean BBQ, which incidentally is NOTHING like Texas BBQ (just so you know).

Saturday - Farewell to Sydney

We started the day at Paddington Market, a great place to buy textiles and souvenirs.

We said goodbye to Birgitte, who had to get back to real life, and Christian and Claudia, who were moving on to Tasmania.

Then there were three.

Al, Hope, and I took a ferry to the iconic Manly Beach for a lazy last afternoon in Sydney.

Apparently there’s a VW bus club that meets at Manly, which only made the place even cooler.

Dinner Saturday night was cocktails and hamburgers at a crazy-loud joint in Newtown called Mary’s, which at various points in its history was a Greek sporting club, a women’s sanctuary, a Masonic hall and an STD clinic.

Sunday through Tuesday - Port Douglas

Sunday afternoon we flew to Cairns, then rented a car and drove down to Port Douglas, a quaint little beach-side community which is also a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.

The main reason for going to Port Douglas was to go SCUBA DIVING!! I spent many hours getting my PADI certification for this very reason, and the experience was everything I’d hoped it would be! What a perfect capstone to an unbelievable trip!

Wednesday and Thursday - Final Goodbyes

Wednesday we drove back to Cairns for lunch, then I flew back to Sydney for one night before my return flight to Dallas.

Thursday afternoon I got on my SIXTH Qantas plane in less than three weeks. I have no idea what happened to the previous sixteen days. I just know they went really fast.

This was one of the greatest adventures of my life - one that would never have happened if it weren’t for the IBM Corporate Service Corps. I remain astounded at all the ways that my CSC experience has changed my life, and I look forward to all the reunions yet to come.

Are We Currently Experiencing A Real Estate Bubble?

Article Summary

The current housing market in the US has made its way back to pre-Great Recession levels.

Interest rates are rising, which will tend to cool off the increasing housing prices.

Significant factors that will cause a market correction in the next two years include the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy and tightening of credit by lenders.

Shopping for a new home seems to cause a person to ask the question, “Is now the right time?” I personally have been looking for an investment property, and have found myself asking that question over and over again, hoping that I don’t end up in a situation where I’m buying at a high point. Although real estate generally tends to trend up in value, it’s still better not to put yourself in a situation where you could have put off purchasing for six to twelve months and picked up a much better deal.

The 2008 Real Estate Market Crash

The real estate market crash of 2008 was a catastrophic situation that affected many of the households in the United States directly, and also caused a credit crisis that affected economies all over the world. Over that time period, real estate became an unstable investment not just for speculators, but for first time home purchasers and other potential homeowners. Previous to what’s commonly referred to as “The Housing Market Crash of 2008” or, as Wikipedia (the modern trend setter for terminology) refers to it, the “United States housing bubble”, real estate had long been a solid investment.

Whether you were buying a home for yourself or investing in property with the expectation that the value would gradually go up, land and home prices were generally predictable.

But the United States housing bubble changed all of that. In the years following 2006, when home prices reached their peak levels nationally before seeing steady and steep declines until 2012, it was hard to know what the value of a home was.

In many of the neighborhoods where I live in Utah, there were so many houses waiting for buyers for years, especially those priced over $300,000, that homes in the same area that were very similar in terms of location, size, upgrades, and other factors that contribute to a home’s value, had asking prices that were drastically different. In one more affluent (prior to the crash) neighborhood where my wife and I were shopping for homes in 2009, two homes made from almost identical floor plans, on very similar lots, had asking prices that were $400k and $700k. In that environment, it was obvious that the local economy simply couldn’t consistently determine the value of a home, especially those in higher price ranges.

Lessons From the United States Housing Bubble

There has been lots of speculation about what caused the 2008 housing crisis. Although looking back, the impending meltdown have been predictable (and actually was predicted by lots of people in the know), the crash took most of the country and the world by surprise, especially naive laymen who jumped in on the speculation towards the end of the good times only to have some part of their savings wiped out after buying high and being forced to sell low.

I have a relative who was one of those. After hearing so much about how much was being made by friends of friends, he jumped and put a large down payment on a home that he was going to be into $400k expecting to sell for $500k or more. Six months after committing to the deal, and while the home was inching closer to being ready to sell, he couldn’t find anyone interested in the home for $400k, nor for $350k, maybe for $300k, which meant a $100k loss.

Amidst all the speculation about what caused the big US housing bubble, it is clear that there were some market fundamentals that were ignored by many people who bought at the wrong time, and who found themselves on the wrong side of the bubble. It is also clear that there were lots of unscrupulous market influencers who through their dishonesty ultimately deprived millions of unsuspecting Americans of a good deal of cash.

It has been over 10 years since that housing bubble began to burst, and confidence in the housing market has mostly been restored, although those who were impacted by the crash are likely still skittish.

What did we learn from the great US housing bubble of 2008?

The underlying cause of the housing crash of 2008 was something called the subprime mortgage crisis. The unnatural increase in house prices that led to a housing bubble in 2008 was built on a framework of unscrupulous borrowing practices, housing speculation by investors, and lending institutions taking risks that were not only unwise, but very often dishonest. Mortgage fraud and predatory lending had become an “epidemic” according to the FBI in a report issued in 2004.

The solution for preventing a repeat of that housing collapse disaster has had to come from increased regulation of the housing industry from the federal government. The Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 was enacted, which gave the federal government much more control of the lending process and which added significantly more restrictions to lenders. This expansion of government through lending is yet another example of how a collective abdication of personal responsibility can drastically affect everyone in the society, including those who have been responsible with their finances.

My Own 2008 Real Estate Story

The real estate market is as complicated as many other elements of the US and worldwide economies. It’s impossible to predict anywhere close to exact timing for a major correction. However, there are several signs that a market reset is coming.

When my wife and I were finishing school and looking to buy a home in 2006, we noticed that prices had surged over the previous three years since the last time we had shopped. We read about or observed first-hand with friends and other people knew about an abundance of interest only loans, risky ARMs (adjustable rate mortgages), and aggressive speculation by homebuilders and me-too investors jumping into the fray to make some quick money. We studied graphs of median household incomes versus house prices in our local market as well as nationally. By spending a few hours each month studying the factors that contribute to healthy and stable real estate markets, we recognized that in 2006, things were getting out of hand.

Instead of buying a home along the stretch of Utah County that was the most coveted, we went south to a more rural area and found a very modest home. It was one that would be perfectly functional for our small family. Over the next four years, we enjoyed a comfortable home we’d bought at a comfortable price, and watched as the trends we’d observed brought the housing market to its knees in 2008.

Following that crash, we were able to find a more more desirable home in an affluent neighborhood at half the price it was valued at only two years prior.

The moral of my personal experience: understanding and paying attention to the fundamental signs of an impending housing correction can keep you from being set back years financially.

When we moved into the neighborhood, we heard stories from many of our neighbors who had not been so “lucky”, who bought their nice homes on the crest of the housing wave that led up to that crash. They struggled when their home values dropped in half, especially since that was coupled with a recession and its impact towards lowering wages. Many people I know have still not quite recovered from the effects of 2008.

What Makes the Housing Market Correct?

A survey done earlier this year by Zillow polled more than 100 real estate experts to get their take on when the US market might expect another recession. Their collective prediction puts another housing correction sometime during 2020. Because of the many different factors affecting if or when a correction happens, that prediction is certainly fluid. However, paying attention to what those factors are can help any individual make much more intelligent decisions about their own personal real estate buying and selling decisions.

In general, the following factors cause the real estate market to correct to home prices drop:

Federal Reserve Monetary Policy: Increase in interest rates by the Federal Reserve naturally translate into monthly costs, meaning that consumers cannot afford as much as they could when rates are lower. The key interest rate has been raised by the Federal Reserve 3 times in 2018, and that rate is expected to be raised once more in December of this year. Already the formerly very hot US real estate market has been softening as a result of the higher interest rates. The majority of real estate professionals (55 out of 99) predicting a correction in the next two years in the Zillow survey identified “monetary policy” as the principle reason for the correction.

Tightening of Credit by Lenders: This factor is related to government regulated interest rates. However, it is much more highly dependent upon the attitudes of lenders. The Zillow survey observed that while credit is loosening for less risky borrowers (those with lots of cash and high credit scores) it has been tightening for those who have low credit scores and who can’t come up with a significant down payment for a home. It appears that lenders are highly conscious of the results of the 2008 crisis, and are being much more conservative in their attitudes towards unproven borrowers.

Supply and Demand for Housing: This factor is the foundation for pricing in any market. If there are more houses available than people who are looking to buy, the market drops. Although demand has been very high over the past several years, it’s apparent that supply is catching up to demand, and that by 2020 the higher interest rates will keep the demand/supply curve in check.

General State of the Economy: The US economy has been doing well for and has showed signs of vitality since 2017. This has helped the real estate market grow and house prices to increase, but at some point natural wages cannot overcome rising high interest rates.

Whether there is a housing market correction in 2020, or if it’s earlier or later, paying attention to your own local housing market and observing the factors described above will help you map your own personal situation to what’s happening with real estate so you can make a good decision.

At fault driver's car insurance won't pay for my damages!?

Hey guys and gals, My wife was in a car accident on 10/8 driving our truck with liability only insurance (IE: not full coverage because the truck is only worth ~$3000 and it's paid for). She was turning right and had slowed down to turn (with her turn signal on) when a speeding truck slammed into the van behind her, ramming the van in to our truck. The police filed a report, in which the driver of the speeding truck (an 18 year old kid, that had just left his house less than 1/4 mile away) was determined to be at fault. It is worth note that this happened in front of two different auto body shops, and within sight of the house the at fault driver had just left. Their insurance company, state farm, finally contacted us on 11/8 after not returning our phone calls for nearly two weeks saying they had determined he was in fact at fault and would send an adjuster the following Monday. He came, inspected the truck, determined it was repairable, then said we would hear from their office later that day. When they called they told us the damage was more than 75% of the vehicles worth so it was considered total and they would send the required paperwork to my email address to begin payment. Within 3 hours, the claim agent we had talked to the previous Friday said an owner of one of the auto shops had came forward (all of a sudden, no mention of a witness before) and that he had a notarized statement saying the van struck our vehicle before the truck struck the van. The insurance company now will not pay us for the damages. We tried to call the witness and get a copy of his report because State Farm would not give us the copy. Then we called the other auto body shop and both the owner and one of his employees both seen the accident and say that the truck was at fault, and the owner overheard the driver say specifically that it was his fault. When we bring this to the agents attention, she claims this is not evidence because they know the at fault driver. We found out that the first witness also knows the driver, but can't prove it. Ours is a small town, you don't have neighbors that you don't know or speak to. It seems we are at an impasse, and I have been without a truck for nearly 6 weeks. What should I do in this instance? Get an attorney? Our insurance agency is adamant about not intervening since we did not have full coverage insurance. It may be worth noting that my wife has had back and neck pain since the accident and went to the hospital the day of the accident, the family doctor twice since, and has an appointment with a chiropractor next week (all of which our insurance has paid for.)""

A few nights ago I accidentally brushed the side of my neighbor's car with my front bumper (cause she was parked like an idiot as usual). The car is a complete piece of sh*t and she doesn't take care of it at all - the paint's dull, the rims are rusted - and I think she's trying to fix these things by making it like they were a result of me hitting her. The last claims representative I spoke with told me that I would not be contacted by the adjuster at all since there is no damage to my car. Here's everything athletes and teams are doing to help victims of Hurricane Harvey in Houston

Athletes are rising to the occasion in the wake of Hurricane Harvey’s devastation of Houston. The city’s emergency response has been overloaded and it’s difficult to get calls through, families remained trapped in their houses, and for others lucky enough to escape, they don’t know what their neighborhoods will look like when they’re able to return.

There are a great many charities you can support to help efforts in Houston. We’ve compiled a list of the major national and local organizations leading efforts. In addition, here are what athletes are doing in the area to assist.

The Texans defensive end began a page on YouCaring to raise money for the victims. He initially set a $500,000 goal, which was quickly eclipsed. At this time it has raised over $32 million, including a $100,000 donation from Watt himself, and a $50,000 from Chris Paul.

Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Struck also donated $1 million to Watt’s efforts to help Houston.

Broncos players and the Broncos organization

Houston native Emmanuel Sanders spearheaded a $87,500 donation from Broncos players, an amount that was matched by the team.

“We could not be more proud of Emmanuel Sanders and his teammates for stepping up and taking the initiative to help those affected by Hurricane Harvey,” Broncos President and CEO Joe Ellis said.

Texans owner Bob McNair and the NFL

The owner of the Houston Texans has pledged $1 million to assist relief efforts with a donation to the United Way of Greater Houston Flood Relief Fund. The NFL announced it would match McNair’s donation to assist.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke

Stan Kroenke and his family donated $1 million to the Red Cross for relief efforts.

"Our family’s thoughts are with all those affected by Hurricane Harvey,” Ann Walton Kroenke, Stan’s wife, said.

Mike Trout

The Angels All-Star is donating $27,000, based on his jersey number to relief efforts.

Houston Astros

The Astros have donated $4 million to efforts in the area. Owner Jim Crane released the following statement.

"We are committed to doing our part to provide aid and assistance to the thousands of Houston-area residents that are desperately in need right now," Crane stated. "We encourage others in our region and beyond to help out in any way that they can."

They have also partnered with MLB to donate all parking, concessions, and ticket revenue from this weekend’s three-game series against the Rangers to relief efforts.

Ezekiel Elliott

The Cowboys running back is challenging people to donate. He kicked things off with a $21,000 dollar donation, in recognition of his jersey number.

Hey Cowboys nation. No matter what team you’re rooting for, we’re all rooting for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Houston Rockets

Rockets owner Leslie Alexander initially pledged $4 million to relief, matching the Astros’ donation — but upped that on Tuesday to $10 million. The team’s initial statement said:

"Out hearts are heavy seeing the devastation that so many of our friends, family and neighbors are experiencing," the Rockets said in a statement. "Leslie Alexander has contributed $4 million to Mayor Sylvester Turner's Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund in an effort to help Clutch City come back stronger than ever. Please stay safe, Houston."

Matt Carpenter

The Cardinals’ Matt Carpenter is pledging $10,000 for every home run he hits for the rest of the season, and will send it towards relief efforts in Houston.

The Rock

Dwayne Johnson took up Kevin Hart’s “Hurrican Harvey Challenge” by donating $25,000, with additional donations to come from Johnson’s different companies. He also sent a message to people displaced by the storm.

Cleveland Indian Jay Bruce, a Beaumont native, and his wife Hannah are matching donations up to $100,000 towards Harvey relief through September 10th to help Southeast Texas communities.

So far, fans have contributed $18,000 to Cleveland Indians Charities which is all going towards hurricane-related aid in Texas through the same date in Texas. A quick look at Bruce’s social media reveals how important these efforts are for him.

The Rockets forward was trying to use his social media following to directly link trapped people in need of aid with first responders. Many in Houston reported difficulty getting calls through jammed 911 lines, so Capela asked for people trapped in the area to tweet at him, which he would then amplify.

The Tampa Bay Rays

The Astros and Rangers will play their three-game series this week in St. Petersburg at Tropicana Field instead of in Houston. The Rays decided to do more than just allow the two Texas teams to use their facilities:

Max Scherzer

Scherzer and his wife Erica are helping in a way that doesn’t seem like an obvious need at first. Some animals that have been rescued from the Houston area are being relocated to Washington D.C. and the Humane Rescue Alliance needs to make room for the incoming rescues.

To achieve their goal of making space, they are asking people to come adopt the current animals living at the shelters. In order to make this as easy as possible for anyone who is thinking about adopting, the Scherzers are covering all adoption fees until the end of the weekend.

With 100 animals currently up for adoption, the total amount covered could easily reach $2-3,000.

Lee Odden Shares Ways to Supercharge Your Content with Influencer Marketing

Sitting across the aisle from a renowned digital marketing strategist and speaker on a daily basis has tendency to allow you to take for granted the knowledge stockpile that is just a few feet away. Tuesday was a good reminder of that.

When Lee Odden, CEO of TopRank Marketing, promised the crowd at the 2017 Digital Summit Minneapolis 45 minutes of content in his 25-minute closing keynote, he was not joking.

Why Influence?

In 1900, cars zoomed down the road at a blistering 45 MPH. Within 8 years, a car could travel 100 MPH. How? The supercharger: a seemingly magical collaboration between oxygen and the automotive engine causing unheard of increases in horsepower and torque.

Is this a pay-to-play space?

Brands large and small, deploying successful influencer marketing programs have seen success using completely paid, completely organic and a mix of paid and organic efforts with their influencer programs. The best choice will be dependent on your business goals and the value your influencers will receive.

Types of Organic Influencer Engagements

In my pre-happy hour prowling, I also learned the audience loved hearing about the three types of influencer engagements and the powerful examples of each Odden shared.

Microcontent: Short-form quotes, tips or insights from individual influencers added to brand content.

Campaigns: Longer-form content contributed by individual influencers often as a part of a larger campaign.

Community: A dedicated group of influencers that contribute a variety of short- and long-form content for brand communications.

Microcontent: Influencer Marketing is Like Dating

Microcontent can show up in many formats as an ingredient to a bigger piece: from influencer roundup blogs and SlideShares to adding snippets within a brand-developed piece of content.

Campaigns

Once you’re “dating” your influencers – okay that doesn’t sound right – once you’ve nurtured your influencers and grown the relationships, you can begin to engage them in campaigns.

Within a campaign, you’ll want to map content against the stages of a purchase journey. Think about the genuine questions your target audience is asking. What’s keeping them up at night? Then decide from whom each answer should come: your brand or an influencer.

It’s important to select influencers who are aligned with your message so both parties gain the full value of an influencer campaign. If you aren’t on the same page, the brand won’t relay the correct message and the piece won’t be as valuable to the influencer which will likely decrease their amplification and deter future collaboration.

Influencer integrated campaigns are where you really see that supercharge in action. In one impressive B2B example Odden shared, with the use of gated assets, long-form interview blogs and social promotion, a brand drove 200,00 views, 4,000 downloads and over 1,000 leads!

Or try another B2B brand who with the help of just one – but impressive – influencer, Shep Hyken, drove $570,000 in qualified sales leads and $1.5 million in projected pipeline revenue in 30 days!

Catch your breath. I know, that blew me away too, and I sit next to the team who designed and executed the latter example.

Community

A structured formal influencer community is a sign of a mature influencer program. In this situation, influencers know (and are likely proud) they are part of the brand’s influencer community. Influencers are asked to contribute to short- and long-form content for brand communications at a regular cadence.

There may or may not be a paid component to being a part of a structured influencer community. But even if there reimbursement, it’s not like what Lebron pockets from Nike, or one-off tweet (an estimated $185k).

Influencers become and stay a part of a brand’s community because their beliefs and values align with the brand’s. And because participating provides them with value.

Odden cited the Adidas Tango Squad as an effective example of a B2C influencer community. Squads of 100-250 youth ages 16-19 in 15 cities worldwide are looped into exclusive content and new product releases before it goes live elsewhere. Adidas stands by their investment arguing content is far more authentic if you give it to 500 kids with 2,000 followers compared to a global influencer with a million followers.

Community’s also work strikingly well for B2B: think employees, execs, clients, industry thought leaders, media and analysts.

The audience members I spoke with also appreciated Odden’s sneak peek into three steps for implementing influencer marketing.

Activation: Start the conversation and build relationships. Listen to influencers and align on what you have in common.

Co-creation: Develop content together. Compose a goal and make it fun and easy for influencers to participate.

Amplify: Provide influencers with ammo to share your content. Make it easy and show them how it benefits them.

The Texans defensive end began a page on YouCaring to raise money for the victims. He initially set a $500,000 goal, which was quickly eclipsed. At this time it has raised over $27 million, including a $100,000 donation from Watt himself, and a $50,000 from Chris Paul.

Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Struck also donated $1 million to Watt’s efforts to help Houston.

Texans owner Bob McNair and the NFL.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke

Kroenke also donated $1 million, to the Red Cross:

The #Rams announce that the Kroenke family will donate $1 million to Red Cross relief efforts in Houston.

Houston Astros

The Astros have donated $4 million to efforts in the area. Owner Jim Crane released the following statement.

They have also partnered with MLB to donate all parking, concessions, and ticket revenue from this weekend’s three-game series against the Rangers to relief efforts.

Ezekiel Elliott

The Cowboys running back is challenging people to donate. He kicked things off with a $21,000 dollar donation, in recognition of his jersey number.

Money went to The Salvation Army, and he’s asking fans to take part by donating in variants of his number as well.

Houston Rockets

Rockets owner Leslie Alexander initially pledged $4 million to relief, matching the Astros’ donation — but upped that on Tuesday to $10 million. The team’s initial statement said:

Matt Carpenter

The Cardinals’ Matt Carpenter is pledging $10,000 for every home run he hits for the rest of the season, and will send it towards relief efforts in Houston.

From now till the rest of the season we will donate 10,000 dollars for every Homerun I hit to help aid the relief efforts in Houston
