Disney World Vocabulary: Terms To Know
Tumblr media
When planning a Walt Disney World Resort vacation, guests encounter pieces of language unique to the most magical place on earth.  To help you understand what Cast Members, other guests, and even your Travel Advisors are talking about we’ve compiled a list here for you.  Please enjoy our list of Disney vocabulary terms and their meanings to study before your next trip. Also, check back because this list will continue to grow and evolve, just like the parks!
Disney Vocab In Alphabetical Order:
Advanced Dining Reservation (ADRs)
ADR's secure your party a table at some of Disney’s most popular restaurants. Guests can make ADRs at the 180-day mark of their check-in date, starting at 6 AM EST online and 7 AM over the phone and can book them for up to 10 days past their check-in date. Here is our guide to the planning timeline in case you missed it.
Cast Member (CM)
Cast Members are the employees at Disney.  Walt Disney believed the guest’s experience when visiting his theme parks is akin to being at a movie, so rather than calling his employees just that, the term "Cast Member" underscores to all that they are part of the production that is put on each day for the guests visiting the parks and resorts.
Tumblr media
Character Dining
Table Service experiences that include an appearance by Disney Characters are considered Character Dining. Here is our dining guide, as well as where to find the Disney Princesses for character dining experiences.
Counter Service / Quick Service (CS / QS)
Counter Service or Quick Service is also referred to as Fast Casual.  These terms refer to the snack stands and restaurants where guests walk to a counter, order their meal, and take the food to a table.
Disney Dining Plan (DDP)
Disney Dining Plans are available exclusively to guests of Disney Resort hotels, it is an optional pre-paid meal plan.  Guests have the choice of 4 different plans with varying entitlements to a certain number of table service, counter/quick service, and snacks per day.
Tumblr media
Disney’s Magical Express (Magic Express or ME)
Magical Express is the airport shuttle service operated by Walt Disney World to transport guests and their luggage from Orlando International Airport (MCO only) to all Disney World resort hotels and back again.
Disney Vacation Club (DVC)
It is probably easiest to think of the Disney Vacation Club as the Disney version of a timeshare.  It is the lease of a deeded property that translates into a points booking system.  You then use those points to book nights at multiple resorts throughout Walt Disney World, Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Aulani, Disney’s Beach Resorts (Hilton Head and Vero Beach), as well as Disney Cruises.
Extra Magic Hours (EMH)
Each day, guests staying at select Walt Disney World Resort hotels can enjoy select attractions in at least one of the 4 theme parks, before or after regular operating hours. Extra Magic Hours are one of the perks of being “on property” at WDW.
FastPass+ (FP+ or FP)
FastPass+ is a complimentary benefit extended to anyone with valid admission. Each Walt Disney World ticket holder receives three advanced FastPass+ selections for a single park (per day). We have a whole guide on this!
Hard Ticket
A hard ticket refers to specific events at Walt Disney World that require a separate, from park admission, ticket.  You’ll often hear something called a Hard Ticket Event, e.g. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary-Halloween Party (MNSSHP), Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party (MVMCP), and Night of Joy.
Tumblr media
MagicBands
Disney Magic Bands are secure all-in-one devices that allow you to effortlessly access the plans and vacation choices that you’ve made with MDE.  They are colorful, customizable, and waterproof wristbands that you can quickly and easily touch to a sensor called a touchpoint.
Memory Maker
Memory Maker is package guests can purchase so to download, edit, and print all of the photographs taken by PhotoPass photographers and attractions throughout Walt Disney World.  Memory Maker is currently included with annual passes. A discount is offered is purchased before arrival although not required. See PhotoPass.
Monorail
Disney's monorail is a single elevated-beam train providing service on three different tracks.  There are two loops in the Magic Kingdom area, circling the Seven Seas Lagoon.  One is an “express” track from the TTC to MK and the other loop is the Resort Loop.  The third provides service to the Future World entrance at Epcot.
Minnie Van
Minnie Van's specific service offered in partnership with Lyft in which the drivers are Disney cast members.  Recently, this service has been expanded to include more resorts and the Orlando International Airport.
My Disney Experience (MDE)
The My Disney Experience website and the app will play major roles in your trip.  You’ll use the website and app to form your travel party and make your ADR and FP+ reservations. During your trip, you’ll be able to track your itineraries and access your Disney PhotoPass pictures.  It also serves as a resource in the parks giving you a map (including indicating where you are), current wait times, menus, and the ability to preorder food at some restaurants!
On Stage/Off Stage/Backstage
Following Walt Disney’s belief that a visit to his theme park is part of a production, these terms refer to where Cast Members are.  On Stage refers to when Cast Members are in view of guests or in a situation where they may interact with guests.  Off Stage or Back Stage stage refers to behind the scenes areas where guests are not permitted.
Tumblr media
Park Hopper
Park Hopper (or Hopper as it is commonly shortened to) is an optional admission add-on that allows guests to visit multiple theme parks in a single day.
Park Hopper Plus
The Park Hopper Plus provides the same benefit of the Park Hopper add-on, plus the addition of access to the water parks, a round of miniature golf, and a round of golf.
Park Hopping
Park Hopping is the act of visiting multiple parks in a single day.  Having an annual pass or Park Hopper add-on is required for this. If you need more information, here are some Park Hopping Tips.
Tumblr media
PhotoPass
PhotoPass is a service that Disney offers with Cast Members taking your photos throughout the parks, most character interactions/meals, and on some attractions.  The service is free and you may view the photos on the MDE app or at PhotoPass shops throughout the property.  Things can get a little confused because there are other PhotoPass-branded products around the parks.  Specifically, you may see ads for single-photo downloads, coffee cups and other merchandise with photos on them, albums, etc. available for purchase. Lucky for you, Heyday Travel Company has you covered! We have a PhotoPass and Memory Maker guide. The important thing to keep in mind is that PhotoPass is the service and Memory Maker is the product/photos.
Pin Trading
It is as straightforward as it sounds, you trade Disney Pins with the Disney Cast Members and for many to a lesser extent with other guests. You can learn more about Pin Trading here.
Resort Loop
The resort loop is the Monorail track that services the Magic Kingdom area resorts: starting at the TTC, to the Polynesian, Grand Floridian, Magic Kingdom, Contemporary, and then returning to the TTC, in that order.
Signature Dining
Signature Dining is a dining experience that uses (2) Table Service dining credit per meal rather than the typical (1) credit.
Skyliner
The Skyliner is the newest mode of transportation offered on-site, a gondola system.  The main station is located at Caribbean Beach with 3 different legs running to; the International Gateway entrance of Epcot by way of Riviera Resort, Hollywood Studios, and the Hourglass Lake station providing access to the Art of Animation and Pop Century resorts.
Tumblr media
Table Service (TS)
Table Service refers to restaurants where guests will be seated and Cast Members will take their order and serve them tableside, also includes buffet and family-style experiences.  These are also typically the restaurants that you’ll want to make ADRs for as demand can be high.
Tables in Wonderland
Tables in Wonderland is a dining discount membership available to Florida Residents, Annual Passholders, and Disney Vacation Club members that allow them to receive a 20% discount at select restaurants on food and drink.
Ticket & Transportation Center (TTC)
The ticket and transportation center is a major transportation hub at Walt Disney World, serving as a transfer point between boats, buses, monorails, and parking for Guests near the Magic Kingdom.
Tumblr media
Other Common Disney Abbreviations:
AK – Animal Kingdom AKL – Animal Kingdom Lodge BOG – Be Our Guest BBB – Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique EP – Epcot FOP – Flight of Passage HS – Hollywood Studios MK – Magic Kingdom RoTR – Rise of The Resistance Like I mentioned earlier, it's best to keep checking back here for updates! Is Cell Phone Repair Worth It?
Having your handheld device repaired can be better and more cost effective than having to pay your mobile phone insurance deductible. If you take a look at the price of a mobile device out of contract you'll see that these little devices aren't cheap at all, and in fact many of them cost over $500 USD! That isn't the price that you paid for your phone though, is it? That is because the stores that sell mobile phones get paid for every contract that they sign you up for, and if you terminate your contract early they'll still get their money. handheld device insurance can be a good investment if you lose your device, but with sites like eBay, Craigslist, and amazon it can be cheaper to get a new handheld device than making an insurance claim. So, is cell phone repair worth it?
Tumblr media
Did you break you digitizer by dropping your phone? Many people every day drop their phones on the pavement, in the toilet, and places that are way beyond me. Now, to get your digitizer repaired by a cell phone repair specialist this will cost you under $120 USD on an iPhone 4. The cost to have your insurance replace your iPhone with a refurbished device is $180 for an iPhone 4 if you have your insurance through Assurion. This does not include your monthly deductible that you have been paying every month through your carrier, and they make money off of that too. I've found that the average monthly premium price is around $10 USD even for your iPhone 4. A little bit of elementary math will show you that having your digitizer replaced by a mobile device repair specialist is cheaper, and a broken screen is something that Apple will not cover under their warranty.
I know you must be thinking that having mobile device insurance is a rip-off, and it can be depending on your view of the situation. These phone insurance companies buy broken phones in bulk, and repair them. Then they ship one of those mobile phones to you. I have taken apart a couple of those refurbished phones, and some are missing screws, show signs of water damage, and the list could go on and on. If you lost your cell phone you could get a used one off of one of the sites stated above for about the same price as your deductible. With handheld device repair becoming more prominent in larger cities, it will become easier for you to find a cell phone repair center near you. I've seen a lot of these device repair agencies pop up over night it seems, and you may want to be careful about who you choose.
I would do my research before I need this type of service, so that way you aren't scrambling to make a decision on a company. I would follow these rules when choosing a mobile device repair company: Do they list their prices on their website? If they do they are more likely not to change their pricing on a regular basis, and they should know their market. Do they offer a warranty? Most of the handheld device repair companies that I have found offer a warranty of at least 90 days. Do they have parts in stock? Any one of these companies that has been around for a while is going to have parts in stock for the more popular phones that they service, because no one wants to wait. Do they take mail in phones? The strongest of these companies are ready to accept phones from anywhere in the world. Most of the time they can get your phone back to you in less time than your insurance can.
We can all hope that we never drop our phones, run them over, or take them for a swim. Honestly the chances of this happening are greater than you finding $5 dollars on the sidewalk. We all may need a great cell phone repair service one day, but we all don't need cell phone insurance. It is a great waste of money, and although it is only $10 a month. Ten dollars a month over a year is the same price of having your screen replaced, and if your a habitual cell phone fumble and miss offender, get an Otter Box!

Getting back to Goddess (sometime in November, 2k16)
It seems I have strayed from the lovely mentality I had at the beginning of the semester.
Strayed yes, but never lost it.
There was a time of great turmoil, the deepest misery I’d ever felt that hurled me into rebirth.
A new David, a refurbished David.
David 2.0
I remember having so much positivity around me that anything I wanted seemed to be in reach.
In a span of a month I lost my virginity, started doing drag, began taking FABULOUS classes at City College and reaffirmed my friendships.
I had fully withdrawn from my Zyprexa at this point, and had never felt more myself in my life.
On one of these nights a friend of mine kept going on and on about how I was a Goddess, about how magical I was and how I seem to always offer people love and a an ear at their most vulnerable.
I treated every single molecule with kindness, with love.
I gave selflessly and told no one of my good deeds, and regretted nothing when I ended up flat broke begging my mom to lend me 10 dollars for food.
At work: I didn’t kiss ass, I didn’t even kill the people with kindness, I MURDERED them with it. I learned the names of each and every housekeeper, greeted them with a smile, and began treating all these lovely ladies as the queens they are.
I brought light to my family, and never had so much confidence in my life.
What happened?
Stress.
Stress fucking killed my vibe, and I let this happen.
The carelessness of my actions in the past few months left me living paycheck to paycheck.
I went broke after the first week of school. By the second week I was hungry, and too proud to ask for help. Finally I called my mother, who picked me up from class because I felt like I would faint on the way home. I had a breakdown on the way and I threw my phone in the front seat and banged my hands on the dashboard like a child. I screamed “I don’t have fucking money to feed myself!” then quickly tried to regain my composure. I apologized to my mom afterwards, because I wasn’t mad at her, I was mad at the situation and at myself for being so careless with my money. I still haven’t regained my financial stability, but I’ve been able to swallow my pride and let people help out and it’s been better.
Stress from balancing work, school, family and a social life was exhausting.
Weeks ago I developed a stress induced rash on my hands, and on my scalp.
I had a dissatisfied guest take her anger out on me, and she later wrote and awful review about me READING ME TO FILTH. Mind you, this was all over the fact that she didn’t hear me say the laundry detergent was sold at the desk and she had to walk an extra 15 feet to get it.
My family was doing better, for a while but then slipped back into their old ways.
I struggled every day in dance class, with anxiety induced dizziness and feeling worthless. I felt I’d never be as good as the other students and thought that everyone believed me to be a waste of time.
PLEASE NOTE
Its not all as bad as it seems. When things start to get difficult, heavy you begin to count all the negatives in your life. With that said, I’d like to combat this negativity with a list of the things I HAVE done that allow me to feel proud of myself:
*I earned a dollar fifty raise at work, and believe me I FUCKING EARNED IT. I was so happy when my manager gave me the news I cried.
*I made quite a few new friends, GOOD FRIENDS that have all had similar experiences and hardships as I.
*I found a therapist that I like and started to go back to therapy.
*I’ve been slowly trying to rebuild my relationship with my father.
*I’ve apologized to everyone for the way I was when I was on medication, and have been working on forgiving myself and not blaming myself for that dark period.
*I’ve re-kindled a few friendships, for the better.
*It’s been months since I’ve practiced any significant self harm.
*3 people have now seen me naked. That’s 3 more than ever before.
*I’m coordinating an art show at my old counseling center.
*I refuse to dilute myself, save for the few people who can’t quite handle my eccentricities (difficult to explain)
*I’ve made strides in dance, and some days I really pull through and this sweet girl claps for me and always yells out “YAAAAS QUEEN!!!” and I cry every time of happiness.
HAD TO STOP BECAUSE MY BACK PAIN GOT SO BAD WILL CONTINUE LATER (I hurt my back on this day bending over trying to take a picture of a pastry on a bed of fruit loops)
[LATER] There’s a few things I never lost. I’m eternally grateful I never lost my walk. I used to struggle bad with self-confidence. After watching season 3 of Rupaul’s Drag Race I fell in love with Raja. Raja was tall, edgy and had legs that went on for days. When Raja came down the runway she never walked, she stomped. No matter what she wore, or what challenge it was she walked with OPULENCE as to say: “I OWN EVERYTHING.” When I started to rebuild I had to throw myself back into the world, and had no choice but to walk everywhere. I’m a strong believer of faking it till you make it, something my high school drama teacher engraved in me and possibly the best mantra I have acquired to date. I didn’t like how I walked so I pretended to be Raja. It was quite unnatural at first, but between steps I would repeat over and over in the back of mind “RAJA, RAJA, RAJA.” Eventually I didn’t have to rely on Raja, and this new bad-ass walk was my own.
I haven’t stopped writing.
Won’t.
Because even in the darkest corners of my mind I know that there is light, and I do need material if I’m going to write the next best-selling dark comedy to date (think Running with Scissors, but with a lot more DAVID FUENTES).
And even if I’m always broke, my rent will always be paid, my phone bill and bus pass will always be paid for.
And I will always be loved.
I want to look back on something I thought was flat out ridiculous. When I began therapy at the cove we created futuristic Dave; what ‘Better Dave’ would look like. I said that Better Dave has confidence. Better Dave isn’t ashamed of his body. Better Dave doesn’t care what others think, he is the epitome of himself and he doesn’t dilute himself for anyone. He is happier, though he can’t ALWAYS be happy. He is loving and he loves himself immensely. Better Dave stands tall, without a hunch and carries himself with style and grace.
A few months ago I met a girl. This was when I had just actualized this ‘Goddess’ state.  I remember being entirely myself to her, and on that night my character knew no fictions. I talked about how bad my teeth were. I told her that I sometimes drank too much, but had been working on it. I told her my family was TOXIC, and that because of that I lived alone. I told her that at one point I was afraid to leave the house, and part of the reason was because I was self conscious of my awful posture.
She said “I don’t see anything wrong with your posture.”And I almost cried. It was honestly one of the nicest things I had ever been told, and it was a sign from the universe that I was doing far better.
A couple weeks ago I broke down during a therapy session. I realized that I had, for the most part become Better Dave. There was a sense of bitter sweetness, for I knew that my life had to of hit rock bottom in order for it to have done a 180.
There was hope, hope you could take to the bank and more hope than Obama pushed in the 2008 election.
I now understand my place in life. I have to do good, and love. I can’t hold on to things of the past, because holding on is what has brought so much pain. The next few months are going to be rough, and things may get more difficult, but I know that at the end of all this pain and suffering is beautiful rebirth. A feng shui of the mind, a fresh new beginning, a perpetual tabula rasa.
Just have to take things day by day.

Five Reasons to Have Your Cell Phone Repaired
Having your mobile device repaired can be better and more cost effective than having to pay your mobile phone insurance deductible. If you take a consider the cost of a mobile unit out of agreement you'll see why these little units aren't inexpensive at all, and actually many of them cost around $500 USD! That is not the cost that you covered your phone nevertheless, can it be? That is as the stores that provide cellphones get paid for each and every contract that they sign you up for, and if you end your contract early they'll still obtain money. mobile unit insurance can be quite a great expense in the event that you eliminate your unit, but with sites like eBay, Craigslist, and amazon it could be cheaper to obtain a new portable product than creating an insurance claim. So, is cell phone fix worth every penny?  cell phone repair Did you break you digitizer by losing your phone? Many individuals each and every day decline their devices on the pavement, in the bathroom, and areas that are way beyond me. Now, to really get your digitizer restored by a mobile phone fix expert this can cost you under $120 USD on an iPhone 4. The price to own your insurance replace your iPhone with a refurbished device is $180 for an iPhone 4 when you have your insurance through Assurion. This does not contain your regular deductible that you have been spending each month through your service, and they earn money off of that too. I've unearthed that the average monthly premium value is around $10 USD actually for the iPhone 4. A little bit of elementary e xn y will show you that having your digitizer replaced by way of a cellular product repair consultant is cheaper, and a damaged monitor is something which Apple won't cover below their warranty. I am aware you must be thinking that having portable device insurance is just a rip-off, and it can be relying on your see of the situation. These phone insurance businesses buy damaged telephones in mass, and restoration them. Chances are they ship some of those cell phones to you. I have got apart a few those repaired phones, and some are lacking screws, display signs of water damage, and the number can continue and on. In the event that you lost your cellular phone you have access to a used one away from one of the web sites mentioned over for about the same cost as your deductible. With portable product repair getting more outstanding in greater cities, it will become simpler for you really to find a mobile phone fix middle near you. I've observed a lot of these product repair agencies pop up overnight it seems, and you may want to be careful about who you choose. I'd do my research before I need this sort of service, so like that you aren't scrambling to make a decision on a company. I would follow these principles when choosing a mobile system fix organization: Do they number their prices on their site? When they do they are more likely not to change their pricing on a regular foundation, and they need to know their market. Do they give you a guarantee? Most of the portable system fix companies that I are finding provide a warranty of at the very least 90 days. Do they've elements in stock? Any one of these brilliant companies that has been around for a while is going to have areas in stock for the very popular devices which they service, because nobody really wants to wait. Do they take mail in phones? The best of these businesses are prepared to simply accept devices from anywhere in the world. The majority of the time they are able to get your phone back to you in less time than your insurance can.

8 reasons why you should get the iPhone 7 instead of the new iPhone XR, XS, or XS Max
New Post has been published on https://webdevq.com/8-reasons-why-you-should-get-the-iphone-7-instead-of-the-new-iphone-xr-xs-or-xs-max/
8 reasons why you should get the iPhone 7 instead of the new iPhone XR, XS, or XS Max
Apple
It looks like the four-figure price tag is here to stay when it comes to new iPhones from Apple.
Indeed, the $1,000 iPhone XS and $1,100 iPhone XS Max may very well be out of reach for some who want the iPhone experience, and even for those who don’t want to spend that much on principle.
The $750 iPhone XR may seem like the iPhone to get if you don’t want to be a part of the $1,000 club, but there are actually a few things about the iPhone 7 that some might prefer over the XR.
Thankfully, Apple is keeping around its older iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus just in case you want the Apple experience for under $600. Surprisingly, you’re not sacrificing that much by going with Apple’s iPhone 7, which is now two generations old. The iPhone 7 is still a fantastic smartphone that stands strong in the face of its younger, shinier siblings, and it’s still a great option for anyone who’s clung onto an iPhone 4, iPhone 5, and even iPhone 6.
Check out eight great reasons why you should check out the iPhone 7 instead of Apple’s latest iPhones:
1. It’s not as expensive as the new iPhones.
Hollis Johnson/Business Insider
First and foremost, the iPhone 7 now costs as low as $450, and it’s $570 for the iPhone 7 Plus.
For the iPhone 7, that’s $300 less to start than the iPhone XR, $550 less than the iPhone XS, and $650 less than the iPhone XS Max.
For the iPhone 7 Plus, that’s $180 less than the iPhone XR, $430 less than the iPhone XS, and $530 less than the iPhone XS Max.
You could even get the iPhone 7 refurbished from Apple’s Refurbished Mac Store for less. The word “refurbished” might not sound good, but my experience with a refurbished 2016 MacBook Pro directly from Apple has been nothing but positive. And you get a one-year warranty with refurbished devices, too.
(To note, I did experience an issue with my MacBook’s keyboard, but it’s a common issue among 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pros that could easily happen on brand new MacBooks, too. Apple has recognized and is offering to repair for free.)
2. You still get the same great iOS experience.
Justin Sullivan/Getty Images
Despite paying significantly less for the iPhone 7, you still get to run the latest version of iOS, iOS 12. It includes better performance for older iPhones, as well as updates to the notifications system and other great tweaks that makes the iPhone operating system better and easier to use.
3. The iPhone 7 is lighter and thinner than the new iPhones.
Hollis Johnson/Business Insider
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are lighter than all the new iPhones, although the iPhone 7 Plus is heavier than the $1,000 iPhone XS.
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are also slightly thinner than all the new iPhones.
4. The iPhone 7 has the home button and fingerprint scanner, which some might prefer over Face ID on the new iPhones.
Hollis Johnson/Business Insider
If you’re not ready to adopt Face ID or the new gestures to navigate around iOS 12, the iPhone 7 phones still come with the good old-fashioned home button and Touch ID fingerprint sensor. They’ll give you the classic tried-and-true iPhone experience, while the new Face ID and gestures could take some getting used to.
5. The iPhone 7 still has a great camera.
Lucy Nicholson/Reuters
Significant strides have been made with the new cameras on the new iPhones with features like Smart HDR, but the iPhone 7 still takes great photos. The iPhone 7 Plus even comes with a dual-lens camera system, with one of the lenses donning a 2x zoom.
6. The iPhone 7 Plus has a higher resolution display than the iPhone XR.
Steve Kovach
Surprisingly, the iPhone XR’s 6.1-inch display will have a 828p screen resolution that’s closer to the smaller 750p 4.7-inch iPhone 7 than the 1080p 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus. That means the iPhone 7 Plus has a sharper display than a brand-new iPhone with a larger display.
We have yet to see how that’ll affect the viewing experience on the iPhone XR, but at least you’d know that the iPhone 7 Plus is technically sharper with a 1080p resolution.
7. The iPhone 7 has 3D Touch, unlike the iPhone XR.
Steve Kovach/Tech Insider
In another surprise move, the iPhone XR doesn’t come with Apple’s 3D Touch feature, which lets you hard-press an app to get useful shortcuts. It might not be the most widely used features in the world, but 3D Touch users may want to avoid the iPhone XR and go for a phone with 3D Touch … like the iPhone 7!
8. The iPhone 7 is still a great performer.
Apple
By selling the iPhone 7 with the A10 chip, Apple is essentially stating that it’s still a top performer that matches its strict standards. In fact, my wife’s iPhone 6S with an older chip is still running beautifully with iOS 12.

While Mexico plays politics with its water, some cities flood and others go dry
http://bit.ly/2oTYMsu
Flooding is a common hazard in Nezahualcoyotl, a Mexican city just outside the nation's capital. AP Photos/Eduardo Verdugo
When Cape Town acknowledged in February that it would run out of water within months, South Africa suddenly became the global poster child for bad water management. Newspapers revealed that the federal government had been slow to respond to the city’s three-year drought because the mayor belongs to an opposition party.
Cape Town is not alone. While both rich and poor countries are drying out, the fast-growing cities of the developing world are projected to suffer the most acute shortages in coming years.
Scarcity turns water into a powerful political bargaining chip. From Delhi to Nairobi, its oversight is fraught with inequality, corruption and conflict.
Mexico, too, has seen its water fall prey to cronyism in too many cities. I interviewed 180 engineers, politicians, business leaders and residents in eight Mexican cities for my book on politics and water. I was startled to discover that Mexican officials frequently treat water distribution and treatment not as public services but as political favors.
When thunderstorms are cause for panic
Nezahualcoyotl is a city in Mexico State near the nation’s sprawling capital. Just after lunch one Friday afternoon in 2008, Pablo, an engineer, was showing me around town when news of an unexpected thunderstorm began lighting up his team’s cell phones and pagers.
The engineers shouted back and forth, looking increasingly frantic. Having just begun my book research, I did not yet understand why an everyday event like a thunderstorm would elicit such panic.
Pablo explained that Nezahualcoyotl’s aged electric grid often failed during big storms and that the city lacked backup generators. If a power outage shut down the local sanitation treatment plant, raw sewage would flood the streets.
These “aguas negras” carry nasty bacteria, viruses and parasitic organisms and can cause cholera, dysentery, hepatitis and severe gastroenteritis. If raw sewage also contains industrial wastewater – which is common in rapidly industrializing countries like Mexico – it may also expose residents to chemicals and heavy metals that can lead to everything from lead poisoning to cancer.
This is what Pablo and his colleagues hoped to prevent. While we avoided a flood that day, I later saw news articles reporting that sewage overflows were relatively common there. In fact, Nezahualcoyotl residents have been dealing with this multisystem failure for 30 years, complaining of gastrointestinal illness and skin lesions all the while.
So why hasn’t this public health emergency been fixed? The answer is a primer on the tricky politics of urban water delivery in Mexico.
In some Mexican cities, heavy rains routinely cause raw sewage carrying a host of dangerous parasites and bacteria to overflow into the streets. AP Photo/Prometeo Lucero
Profit from dysfunction
Public malfeasance in Mexico is widespread. Nearly 90 percent of citizens see the state and federal government as corrupt, according to the Mexican National Institute of Statistics and Geography.
The country’s water situation, too, is pretty dire. The capital, Mexico City, is “parched and sinking,” according to a powerful 2017 New York Times report, and 81 percent of residents say they don’t drink from the tap, either because they lack running water or they don’t trust its quality.
Officially, nearly all Mexicans have access to running water. But in practice, many – particularly poorer people – have intermittent service and very low pressure.
Workers in one city asked me to keep their identity anonymous before explaining why the water infrastructure there was so decrepit. It wasn’t a lack of technology, they said. The mayor’s team actually profits from refusing to upgrade the city’s perpetually defunct hardware. That’s because whenever a generator or valve breaks, they send it to their buddies’ refurbishing shops.
Numerous engineers across Mexico similarly expressed frustration that they were sometimes forbidden from making technical fixes to improve local water service because of a mayor’s “political commitments.”
In Nezahualcoyotl, I met a water director who openly boasted of using public water service for his political and personal gain. In the same breath, he told me that he fought to keep water bills low in this mostly poor city because water was a “human right” but also that he had once turned off supplies to an entire neighborhood for weeks because of a feud with another city employee.
No voter ID, no water
Public officials also use water to influence politics.
My sources also alleged that the powerful Revolutionary Institutional Party, or PRI – which has long run Mexico State, and thus controlled its water supply – has turned off the water in towns whose mayors belonged to opposition parties. These tactics are not reported in the Mexican press, but according to my research the cuts tend to occur just before municipal elections – a bid to make the PRI’s political competition look bad.
Water corruption isn’t limited to Mexico State, or to the center-right PRI party.
The millions of Mexicans who lack reliable access to piped water are served by municipal water trucks, called “pipas,” which drive around filling buildings’ cisterns. This system seems prone to political exploitation.
Mexican households without steady running water have cisterns filled by ‘pipas,’ or municipal water trucks. AP Photo/Dario Lopez-Mills
Interviewees told me that city workers sometimes make people show their voter ID cards, demonstrating their affiliation to the governing party, before receiving their water. Across the country, mayoral candidates chase votes by promising to give residents free or subsidized water service, rather than to charge based on consumption.
The phenomenon of trading water as a political favor is probably more common in lower income communities, which rely almost exclusively on the pipas.
Water is a state secret
In Xalapa, the capital of Veracruz state, I saw how water can hold a different kind of political power.
There, I found, the location of underground pipes and other critical water infrastructure was guarded like a state secret, known by just a handful of public workers. It made them irreplaceable.
So when customers complained that some municipal employees were asking for bribes to provide water, management hesitated to fire them. The workers controlled valuable information about the city’s water system.
Water may be a human right. But when politicians manipulate it for their personal or political benefit, some cities flood while others go dry.
Veronica Herrera does not work for, consult, own shares in or receive funding from any company or organisation that would benefit from this article, and has disclosed no relevant affiliations beyond their academic appointment.

Planning a vacation can be an overwhelming task.  Planning a Walt Disney World vacation, especially, can seem almost insurmountable for those new to the destination.  This is being written to provide you a guide for navigating the nearly infinite options available to you. For the purposes of this article, we’ll be focused on Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fl.  Disney has theme park options around the world in addition to an award-winning cruise line and guided tours call Adventures by Disney. First, let's appreciate the size of Walt Disney World (WDW).  The properties cover 47 sq. miles of area. This is roughly the size of San Francisco and twice the size of Manhattan!  There are more than 25 unique resort hotels with over 30,000 hotel rooms, 409 wilderness cabins, and 799 campsites on the property!  There are over 300 dining locations spread throughout the property ranging from James Beard's award-winning and Michelin star-rated chef’s restaurants to popcorn and ice cream carts.  On an average day, 250,000 guests travel around the property using the 400+ buses, 12 monorail trains, water taxis and boats, and the new Skyliner gondola system. Since its opening in 1971, the monorail trains have registered enough miles to make over 30 roundtrips to the moon! One of the big things that we cannot emphasize enough is how complicated Walt Disney World can be and how much preparation is necessary. Many first-timers don’t realize Walt Disney World is so complex until they arrive. Advertisements make it look like a carefree world where everyone skips around, holding hands with Mickey Mouse and walking onto rides. That’s not the reality. You need to plan. There is a ton to know before you visit Walt Disney World. The payoff is worth it. No fear though, that’s what we’re here for!  Let us help guide you through the process of selecting the exciting attractions, spectacular resorts, and delicious dining options that will make your trip just magical!
It's Never Too Early To Starting Planning Your Disney Trip
As soon as you think you want to go to WDW, start your research.  You’re reading this article, so in my biased opinion, you’re off to a perfect start!  Review our rough timeline here. It will give you an overarching idea of what is ahead of you.  We want to formulate at least a rough itinerary. Think about what you want this trip to “be”. Are you looking for a “once in a lifetime, do as much as you can” trip?  Or, a shorter “go sample what there is to offer and then come back and focus on your interests” trip? There are a million ways to go about visiting Disney World and they are all correct. With that said, we recommend starting your planning at least 190 days (6.5 months) out.  Why so far in advance? This provides you the opportunity to take advantage of the Advanced Dining Reservations (ADR) window and will provide a greater variety of resort options.  This is not a hard and fast rule though. You can absolutely go and enjoy yourself with a shorter planning window. You may just find it difficult to get some of the more sought after ADRs or find that your top resort choice has no availability. No matter your amount of experience traveling to Disney World, one of our travel advisors can greatly reduce your effort in the process and help you make a customized Disney vacation a reality. Plus, our services are completely free of charge!
General Information for Disney World Planning
Before we go any further, let’s review some terms so we are talking about the same things.  Here are a series of terms, acronyms, and abbreviations that you’ll want to know before going.  This will help with the planning and likely while on your vacation as well.  Resorts At the minimum, this is your hotel.  Really, they are so much more than just a room to sleep in.  All of them, from the value to moderate to deluxe resorts all offer Disney theming and amenities not found anywhere else!  No matter where you choose to stay, you’ll find dining, shopping, recreation, and entertainment options there. This choice to stay “on property” or “off property” will also impact other aspects of your planning.  The most significant being when you may make Fastpass+ reservations. You’ll also find this playing into your planning for getting to and from the parks each day.  My Disney Experience (MDE) The My Disney Experience website and the My Disney Experience app will play major roles in your trip.  You’ll use the website and app to form your travel party and make your ADR and Fastpass+ reservations. During your trip, you’ll be able to track your itineraries and access your Disney PhotoPass pictures.  It also serves as a resource in the parks giving you a map (including indicating where you are), current wait times, menus, and the ability to preorder food at some restaurants!
Tumblr media
MagicBands MagicBands are secure all-in-one devices that allow you to effortlessly access the plans and vacation choices that you’ve made with MDE.  They are colorful, customizable, and waterproof wristbands that you can quickly and easily touch to a sensor called a touchpoint.  You can use your MagicBand to: Unlock the door of your Disney Resort hotel room.Enter theme and water parks (with valid admission).Check-in at FastPass+ entrances.Connect Disney PhotoPass images to your account.Charge food and merchandise purchases to your Disney Resort hotel room (only available during your hotel stay). A MagicBand can also: Add a touch of magic to your vacation by unlocking special surprises, personalized just for you, throughout the Walt Disney World Resort! Extra Magic Hours (EMH) Each day, guests staying at select Walt Disney World Resort hotels can enjoy select attractions in at least one of the 4 theme parks, before or after regular operating hours. This is one of the perks of being “on property” at WDW.   FastPass+ (FP+) FastPass+ is a complimentary benefit extended to anyone with valid admission. Each Walt Disney World ticket holder receives three advanced FastPass+ selections for a single park (per day). This service allows you to reserve access to attractions of your choosing at a specific time, with a minimal wait. There are a limited number of FastPass+ allocations for each ride each day.  We recommend you make your FastPass+ selections early in order to have a greater variety of options to choose from. Since all attractions and Character Greetings provide standby entrances, you’re also free to simply plan as you go. The number of slots are limited. Depending on availability, additional FastPass+ selections may be available to guests once their three initial selections have been used each day. Advanced FastPass+ reservations may be made up to 60 days in advance for on-site guests, and 30 days for off-site guests. Advanced Dining Reservations (ADR) Advanced Dining Reservations (ADRs) secure your party a table at some of Disney’s most popular restaurants. Guests can make ADRs at the 180-day mark of their check-in date, starting at 6 AM EST online and 7 AM over the phone and can book them for up to 10 days past their check-in date.
Disney World Planning Timeline
Now that you’re familiar with many of the terms we’ll be using, we’ll look at our Planning Timeline.  Here is a listing of things to consider while planning your trip to Walt Disney World. The Core Of Your Disney Trip It is difficult to make any decision about an aspect of your Disney trip without affecting another.  The core of your trip is going to set up, and possibly dictate, nearly all other components. That core is comprised of when you’re traveling, length of stay, and resort. There isn’t a right or wrong place to start but we suggest starting with when.  For many people, this is the least flexible part of their trip. When you travel will dictate what special events and festivals are taking place, crowds, and weather. With when in mind we should also discuss the budget.  While there is some variation in cost between seasons, the budget tends to be the largest factor for how long you decide to stay.  Longer stays typically allow for a more relaxed experience and flexibility with attaining your ‘must-do’ ADRs or FP+. The resort is important and can be greatly affected by your previous few decisions.  Depending on the season, some resorts will be at a much higher demand because of location and proximity to special events.  This is also where you’ll see the largest difference in price between seasons. Everyone has different priorities for their resort which we’ll happily walk you through.  With over 25 resorts on property, there is one with just the right mix of amenities, location, and price for anyone. No matter what your answers are to these questions, we can help you figure out the best options for you.  Heyday Travel Advisors will keep you to date on refurbishment schedules, events and availabilities, and those pesky reservations dates. Up to 499 Days Before Your Trip
Tumblr media
That’s right, 499 days out!  That is how far out you may make a room-only reservation.  Very few people do this but it is an option. In our experience, most people start planning about a year ahead of time.  Packages (room, ticket, and dining plan) can be booked approximately 270 days prior to arrival.   No need to fret about when offers are announced either.  If you have a package already booked that would qualify for a newly announced offer, we can make that happen for you.  Your advisor will be keeping track of this and will call Disney on your behalf to get the pricing applied to your reservation!  How great is that? It really does become a set-it and forget-it vacation. Again, all included in that low low price of free! One last item to consider.  If you’re flying, you’ll need to ensure that your identification is Real ID compliant.  It would be a shame to go through all of this planning only to be turned away at the airport!  Since this potentially involves needing to get a passport or new State ID, the earlier we start the better. 190 Days Before Your Disney Trip
Tumblr media
Although we’ll have discussed this beforehand, at about 190 days we’ll need to solidify which parks you want to visit on which days.  Why is this important? This leads directly into those FP+ reservations. Although they’re not available yet we’ll want to take those into account when making your ADRs.  That booking window opens at 180 days. At this time, we also need to ensure you have a My Disney Experience account. If you don’t have one, we’ll guide you through creating one.  Everyone in your traveling party will need to have an account and link them together. This will allow you (or us on your behalf) to make advanced FastPass+ selections and Advanced Dining Reservations when your reservation windows open. We’ll want to discuss which restaurants you want to experience.  Some are within the parks and some are at the resorts or Disney Springs.  The more prepared we are for the 180-day reservation window opening the more likely it is that we can get you the experiences you want.  It goes beyond just dining as well. There are other special activities that you can start booking then. Such as; fireworks cruises, Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, dessert parties, animal experiences at Animal Kingdom, and much more.  Again, these are all of the things our Heyday Travel Advisors are here to help you with. 80 Days Before Your Disney Trip We’ll want to order your park tickets, if not part of a package, at this point.  We need those to arrive and be linked to your My Disney Experience account in order to make your FastPass+ selections. At this time, we’ll also need to work towards solidifying your daily park and FastPass+ plans.  This won’t be the first time we’ve discussed it, so it will likely just be deciding between previously discussed options.  We’ll assist you in identifying what is most important to you and help you maximize your party’s selections. 60 or 30 Days Before Your Disney Trip
Tumblr media
We’ll want to book FastPass+ reservations as soon as the window opens.  WDW Resort guests can start booking for their entire length of stay 60 days in advance, at 7:00 AM EST, while off-site guests can make their reservations up to 30 days in advance for each day at the park.  This can be another significant perk to staying on site.   45 Days Before Your Disney Trip We’ll want to finalize your MagicBand customization at this time.  We’ll record that in your MDE account for them to be shipped to your home in plenty of time.  Disney’s deadline is really 30 days, but we like to allow extra time when possible. Ideally, we should also finalize your travel details at this time.  If you’re flying, Disney offers a service called Magical Express. This is included with your resort stay and provides transportation from Orlando International Airport (MCO only) to your resort.  If registered far enough out, they will even arrange transportation of your luggage. That’s right, no standing around and grabbing your bags from the carousel. You walk right from your gate to a bus and head towards Disney World!  How magical is that? When using Magical Express, this may change how you want to pack.  Your luggage may be as long as 3 hours behind you. What you place in your carryon luggage will depend on how you intend to spend your arrival day.   10 Days Before Your Disney Trip Review and finalize your plans.  Write out or print a daily itinerary with your priority activities to have on hand.  Although you’ll have access to online plans in the parks there is something inherently comforting about a hardcopy. Purchase Disney World’s Memory Maker photo service. You will save purchasing it ahead of time and ensure that it is linked to your account ahead of arrival.  This may also be your last opportunity to purchase travel protection.  While this is optional insurance it is something we always recommend. For the coverage that it provides, it is typically a fairly economical cost. 3 Days Before Your Disney Trip Review and print your reservation details.  You’ll also want to review and monitor the weather a bit closer.  This will be your last opportunity to make any last-minute packing changes.  The weather may change how you plan on spending your arrival day. Especially if flying and using Magical Express, you’ll need to consider what is in checked luggage and what in a carryon.  We also suggest getting everything packed and weighed prior to the day of departure. If you need to adjust at the last minute, it is much less stressful with 48-72 hours before departure than it is at 24 hours or less. High Popularity ADR In our experience, there are certain dining reservations and activities that reach capacity quickly. If you’re wanting to experience any of these, listed below, we strongly suggest you make them a priority at the opening of your 180-day window. Beaches and CreamBe Our Guest RestaurantBibbidi Bobbidi BoutiqueCalifornia GrillChef Mickey’sChef’s Table at Victoria and Albert’sCinderella’s Royal TableCirque du SoleilHoop-Dee-Doo Musical RevueLe CellierPrincess Storybook Dining at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall‘Ohana High Popularity FastPass+ Likewise, you should make your FastPass+ selections as soon as your 60 or 30-day window opens. Here are some of the, typically, most difficult FastPass+ reservations to make: Peter Pan’s Flight (Magic Kingdom)Seven Dwarfs Mine Train (Magic Kingdom)Space Mountain (Magic Kingdom)Frozen Ever After (Epcot)Soarin’ (Epcot) Test Track (Epcot)Flight of Passage (Animal Kingdom)Navi River Journey (Animal Kingdom) Expedition Everest (Animal Kingdom)Toy Story Midway Mania (Hollywood Studios) Slinky Dog Dash (Hollywood Studios) Read the next article in our Planning Guide series here: Planning the Core of your Walt Disney World Vacation.

A Review of TracFone Wireless Plans
look over transfs.com web site for far more tips on personal finances
Cell phone plans don’t have to be expensive or complex. In our Tracfone review, we cover plans, smartphones, and costs of this low-cost cellphone option.
TracFone is an appealing option for many people looking to escape from the contracts of major mobile carriers.
TracFone stands out among all of the prepaid and budget carriers out there because it actually has coverage contracts with the four major wireless carriers in the country. What does this mean? It essentially means that TracFone customers get the coverage and reliability of major carriers without the high monthly rates or ironclad contracts.
Related: How to Find the Most Affordable Cell Phone Plans
There’s a lot of variety when it comes to TracFone’s plans and coverage tiers. The lowest plan possible costs $9.99. Prices are then offered in tiers that can go as high as $199. Here’s a look at what you’ll have to choose from:
Smartphone–only plans
Pay-as-you–go plans
Service add–ons
TracFone Smartphone Plans
Most plans offer customers the option to save between 5 percent and 10 percent when they sign up for TracFone Auto-Refill. Be sure to factor this in when doing a price comparison. Your discount can be set up during the checkout process once you’ve selected your plan.
Smartphone–Only Plans
TracFone currently offers seven coverage tiers to choose from when selecting a plan. Smartphone-only plans provide minutes, texts and data. These plans offer service periods of 365 days, 90 days, 60 days or 30 days. Here’s a look at the current plans available for smartphones through TracFone:
Plan Cost # of Service Days # of Minutes # of Texts Data Limit $125.00* 365 1,500 1,500 1.5GB $50.00 90 750 1,500 2.0GB $45.00 60 750 1,000 1.5GB $35.00* 60 750 1,000 1.0GB $25.00* 60 500 1,000 500MB $20.00 30 300 1,000 1.0GB $15.00* 30 200 500 500MB
Plans marked with a * are eligible for a 5% discount when you auto enroll.
TracFone Pay As You Go Plans
TracFone currently offers eight pay-as-you-go plans. Pay-as-you-go plans include talk, text and web. These plans offer service periods of 30 days, 90 days or 365 days. This plan type works with both smartphones and non-smartphone models. Here’s a look at the pay-as-you-go plans available through TracFone:
Plan Cost # of Service Days # of Minutes # of Texts Data Limit $199.99 365 4,500 4,500 4.5GB $159.99 365 3,000 3,000 3.0GB $99.99 365 1,200 1,200 1.2GB $79.99* 90 1,350 1,350 1.35GB $39.99* 90 600 600 600MB $29.99* 90 360 360 360MB $19.99* 90 180 180 180MB $9.99* 30 90 90 90MB
Plans marked with a * are eligible for a 10% discount when you auto enroll.
I don’t own a smartphone, and I use my TracFone exclusively for when I’m on road trips, away from my family.  That only happens a couple of times a year, for a couple of days a year,so I try to keep my cell phone spending to a minimum.
Every three months, I auto enroll in the $19.99 plan for 180 minutes and 90 service days.  By auto enrolling, I get a 10% discount off the cost, so my annual cell phone cost is $71.96.  As I only use this phones a few days every quarter, I never run out of minutes and by renewing, I keep the same cell number.  For ~$6 a month, I think the service is more than worth it.
TracFone Service Add-ons
It’s okay if TrackFone’s plans don’t quite offer everything you’re looking for. The company provides add-on options that allow you to bulk up your plan and create a custom situation. All add-ons that are purchased will roll over and remain active for as long as service remains active. Here’s a look at the pricing for the extras you can add on to the plan you choose:
$10 for international calling
$10 for 1GB data
$5 for 1,000 texts
The more expensive plans with longer service periods tend to break down to be much cheaper per month than less expensive plans with shorter service periods. For instance, an annual plan that costs $125 works out to be just over $10 per month. The other big perk of going with an annual plan is that you won’t have to worry about renewing your service.
There’s no need to wait until the evening to make calls with a TracFone plan. All minutes, text and data can be used at any time. Anything that’s left over at the end of the period you’ve signed up for will carry over into the new service period if you choose to renew your plan.
What happens if you end up needing more talk time or data than what’s provided in the plan you’ve purchased? You always have the option to purchase additional cards and add more airtime to your plan. This can be a cost-effective, non-permanent option to cover the months that you have more activity.
TrackFone Q and A
Can You Bring Your Own Device?
TracFone allows customers to bring their own devices. You will first have to check to see if your phone is compatible. The next step is purchasing an activation kit and choosing the plan that you want. You will have the option to keep your current phone number or get a new one when you sign up for a TrackFone account. You do not have to use a smartphone to be able to use the company’s pay-as-you-go plans.
Does TracFone Sell Devices?
It’s not a problem if you don’t already have a compatible device or if you’re ready to upgrade to something new. TracFone sells a wide range of Android devices and iPhones. In addition, you can purchase a non-smartphone device from TracFone. Both new and refurbished devices are available. Customers receive free overnight shipping on most phone purchases. Certain phones available through TracFone come with double minutes and triple minutes. This is definitely a feature to look for when shopping through TracFone’s selection of devices.
Where Can TracFone Phones Be Used?
TracFone service will only work in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. This includes Alaska and Hawaii. While service won’t work in Mexico, you can obtain a Mexican phone number through TracFone for the purpose of making calls at local rates. Cheap international calling is actually one of the biggest perks offered by TracFone. Customers can enjoy local calling rates to more than 100 destinations worldwide.
Can I text internationally?
TracFone doesn’t offer international text messaging. The biggest drawback of TracFone is that costs can add up very quickly if you’re not careful. Heavy phone users can become frustrated easily by the extra costs that are incurred.
Is TracFone a Good Cell Provider?
TracFone is a discount carrier that has been around since 1996. It stands out among similar options because of the strong network that it provides. TracFone actually uses the same towers as Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile. The exact network your service runs on will depend on factors like the type of phone you’re using and your geographical location. You can technically choose the network you want if you bring over a compatible phone that is branded by that network.
TracFone is an ideal option for anyone who needs a plan for light to moderate monthly usage. The plans offered are extremely inexpensive once you break them down by month. The coverage provided by other pay-as-you-go carriers can barely come close to the dependable and clear service offered by TracFone. Unlike many discount carriers that offer spotty coverage, service is available virtually everywhere in the country with TracFone.
What is offered by TracFone is about as close as you can get to what’s offered by the major wireless carriers without actually making the commitment to sign a contract with one. Its versatile options and low per-month costs make TracFone a solid pick for anyone looking for an affordable and flexible wireless option.
