Art is order. But order is not necessarily just, kind, or beautiful. Order may be arbitrary, harsh, and cruel. Art has nothing to do with morality... The artist makes art not to save humankind but to save himself.
Camille Paglia, Sexual Personae (1991) | Chapter 1. “Sex and Violence, or Nature and Art”. Maximum Asher Lev.

“For all the pain you suffered, my mama. For all the torment of your past and future years, my mama. For all the anguish this picture of pain will cause you. For the unspeakable mystery that brings good fathers and sons into the world and lets a mother watch them tear at each other’s throats. For the Master of the Universe, whose suffering world I do not comprehend. For dreams of horror, for nights of waiting, for memories of death, for the love I have for you, for all the things I remember, and for all the things I should remember but have forgotten, for all these I created this painting—an observant Jew working on a crucifixion because there was no aesthetic mold in his own religious tradition into which he could pour a painting of ultimate anguish and torment.”
I do not have many things that are meaningful to me. Except my doubts and my fears. And my art.

Jesus Presented at the Temple
Don’t forget why we celebrate. Luke 2:21-38 part 2/4
Tumblr media
21 “At the end of eight days, when He was to be circumcised, He was named Jesus, the name given [to Him] by the angel [Gabriel] before He was conceived in the womb.”
22 “And when the time for their purification came [that is, the mother’s purification and the baby’s dedication] according to the Law of Moses, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord [set apart as the Firstborn] [Lev 12:1-4]” 23 “(as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male that opens the womb shall be called holy [set apart and dedicated] to the Lord)” [Ex 13:1, 2, 12; Num 8:17]” 24 “and [they came also] to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord [to be appropriate for a family of modest means], “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” [Lev 12:6-8]”
25 “Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout [carefully observing the divine Law], and looking for the Consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him.” 26 “It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed).” 27 “Prompted by the Spirit, he came into the temple [enclosure]; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for Him the custom required by the Law,” 28 “Simeon took Him into his arms, and blessed and praised and thanked God, and said,”
29 “Now, Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to leave [this world] in peace, According to Your word;”
30 “For my eyes have seen Your Salvation, [Is 52:10]”
31 “Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples,”
32 “A Light for revelation to the Gentiles [to disclose what was previously unknown], And [to bring] the praise and honor and glory of Your people Israel.” [Is 42:6; 49:6]”
33 “And His [legal] father and His mother were amazed at what was said about Him.” 34 “Simeon blessed them and said to Mary His mother, “Listen carefully: this Child is appointed and destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and for a sign that is to be opposed— [Is 8:14, 15]” 35 “and a sword [of deep sorrow] will pierce through your own soul—so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” 36 “There was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old, and had lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage, [Josh 19:24]” 37 “and then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She did not leave the [area of the] temple, but was serving and worshiping night and day with fastings and prayers.” 38 “She, too, came up at that very moment and began praising and giving thanks to God, and continued to speak of Him to all who were looking for the redemption and deliverance of Jerusalem.”
All parts are below Luke 2:1-52

Do you have any favorite books written by jews that you think are really cool/worth reccomending?
Just a few of my favourite off the top of my head, in no particular order:
"Up Up and Oy Vey" - by Simcha Weinstein. Non-fiction.
"Wrestling with God and Man"- by Rabbi Steven Greenberg. Non-fiction.
"The Red Tent"- by Anita Diamant. Biblical fiction.
"The Chosen"- by Chaim Potok. Novel.
"My Name is Asher Lev"- by Chaim Potok. Novel.
"The Secret Chord"- by Geraldine Brooks. Biblical fiction.
"Where the Wild Things Are"- by Maurice Sendak. Children's book. Holds a special place in my heart because my Grandmama used to read it to me all the time as a kid and she would do different voices for the different characters and it always makes me think of her.
"Man's Search for Meaning"- by Viktor Frankl. Memoir.
"The Fixer"- by Bernard Malamud. Novel.
"Ecclesiastes"- by King Solomon. Book in the Tanakh.

hello ! i’m looking for books/media that talk about being an artist in terms of being part of one’s identity and was wondering if you had any recommendations… i’ve been struggling how to word what i’m specifically looking for so idk if this’ll make sense! if u even have places to look or some search terms i could use it’d be much appreciated!
basically like . creators talking about using art as self expression/reflection, how being a creator informs how one moves in the world, capitalism’s effect on how creators view themselves, exploring art & madness… broad but if you think of anything related i’d love to check it out :) thank you!!!
yes, I do have some!
Here are some books on the relationship between one's art (writing, film, documentary, visual arts, etc.) and (often Mad) life - i'm not delineating between fiction and nf here because most are a mix:
Virginia Woolf, On Being Ill
Poupeh Missaghi, trans(re)lating house one
Ruth Ozeki, My Year of Meats.
Chaim Potok, My Name is Asher Lev
Eileen Myles, Inferno
Leslie Jamison, The Empathy Exams
Johanna Hedva, Minerva A Miscarriage of the Brain
Akwaeke Emezi, Dear Senthuran
T Fleischmann, Time is the Thing A Body Moves Through
I curated a folio of Mad creativity / craft in 2021:
Part One
Part Two
And I recently wrote a quasi-craft/bodymind essay, which you can read here.
And here are a two important-to-me craft essays I happen to have bookmarked that feel relevant:
Daydreaming With Leslie Jamison
Brain Fog: An Essay
Hope this helps!

Book ask:
My Name is Asher Lev, by Chaim Potok
Brideshead Revisited, by Evelyn Waugh
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, by Betty Smith
Three of my personal favorites on my shelf! What do you think?
My Name is Asher Lev
added to TBR | on my TBR | couldn’t finish it | did not enjoy | it was OK | liked it | loved it | favorite | not interested
Not even sure how to rate this one. I don't think I've heard of it before, and I'm not sure it's something I'd enjoy? It sounds fascinating, though.
Brideshead Revisited
added to TBR | on my TBR | couldn’t finish it | did not enjoy | it was OK | liked it | loved it | favorite | not interested
Somehow this book ended up on my shelf, though I'm not sure when or where I picked it up. Honestly I know nothing about it, but I've heard plenty of people talk about it...? It's a tentative "maybe I'll read it one day" book for me. I'm open to being convinced otherwise.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

This is one of those books I've been Aware Of for years but, again, know nothing about, lol. I definitely want to check it out!
