TPP HADESTOWN AU PART 8: song for a caged lovebird
IT'S PART 8 WHAAAT this is absolutely insane, i'm having so much fun rn <3
this is a lil shorter but it's very interesting, so as usual, enjoy
EDIT THAT I FORGOR: this is now gonna be titled "song for a caged lovebird" from here on out, thanks for the idea jay <3
all my tpp homies in the house!!! if you are in my walls, please leave (jk i love you i'll bring you snacks)!!!! @smidgen-of-hotboy @ceaseless-watchers-special-girl @one-joe-spoopy @urjover @waters-and-the-wilde @demonic-panini
His eyes fluttered open at the sound of the door. It was dark.
He wasn’t quite sure of the time or his location. He was laying on something soft, he knew that much. A bed, maybe? He had been sleeping, or so he thought. He felt groggy, disoriented, still tethered to the world of dreams by a song that he couldn’t quite seem to shake out of his mind. Was it his own voice singing it, or someone else's? He almost thought he heard a train whistle in the distance, but knew the train line hadn’t run in months, not since the rails had frozen over with ice so thick it couldn’t be melted.
The world felt so strange. There was a heavy knot lying in the pit of his stomach, like something horrible had happened, but he couldn’t quite tell what. Was it his own doing? Someone else’s? He felt almost completely certain it had to do with someone going missing, but no more details sprang to mind.
The person who had entered the room was talking. He didn’t process what they said.
He tried to sit up to face them. He knew whatever was being said was important. He had to pay attention. But a wave of dizziness overtook him, and he fell back down. They asked a question, and when he didn’t respond, they turned and left.
He let them go. He didn’t have the energy to stop them or ask them to repeat themselves. Sleep was already tugging his eyelids closed again. He let it come, and gently slipped back into a world of dreams.
—------------------------------
Far below the ground, there was a factory town.
This town was old, old enough that no one could really remember when it began. All anyone really knew was that it was hell on Earth. Giant metal works spun rusty gears through all hours of the day and night, and blast furnaces and refineries threw their dragon-fire heat out into the town. Housing was small and cramped and never used, stacked like smashed crates in the rare cooler corner of town, right next to the assembly lines for cars and TV screens. Mines worked overtime to produce rare gemstones and pure gold, and on the outskirts of town, there was a wall. And that was where most of the people worked.
There were a lot of people. Maybe millions, if one really took the time to count. Backs bent to their work, eyes milky white with focus, pickaxe or shovel or wheelbarrow in hand. Different ages and races and genders, but they all had two things in common: they kept their heads down, and they belonged to the king of this land.
Some had signed their souls away in an attempt to avoid their own death. Some had done it in the name of a loved one. Some had even done it in the hopes of getting paid. But that didn’t matter now. None of them could remember anything about their lives before Hadestown anyway. They did what they were told, and they had been told to forget and to work.
So they did.
At the center of town, in a grand office in a high tower, staring out a window at his beautiful city, was the king.
He had always been a crafter, an inventor of sorts. But this was on a far greater scale than anything he had ever imagined when he was a child. He was proud of his beauty, his greatest creation. But it had always been missing something to him. As grand as his factories were, and as many souls as he and his executives had gained to carry out the work, something was just never quite right. He had always hungered after something else, something from his past he hadn’t been able to take with him into the underworld.
Now, though. Now he had finally acquired the missing piece, and everything would finally be perfect.
One of the executives appeared in the doorway behind him. “The target you requested is nearly here, my associate.”
He nodded, not turning away from the window. “Very good. Bring him up to the office as soon as he gets here. I need to speak with him.”
“As you wish, my associate.”
He grinned a bit to himself. It had been years, but he was certain the man he was bringing here would be happy to see him again. They had been so close when they were younger, and he had never forgotten the time they spent together. He hoped that, even for old times sake, the man would want to stay with him a while. He hoped he would be impressed by everything he had created in his absence. It was all for him, after all.
The door creaked open behind him. “You have a visitor, my associate.”
He finally turned away from the window to face the door and watched as the man stumbled through into the office.
The years had certainly changed him. He was tall now, not short as he had been, but still as thin as ever, hair dark and messy and heavy circles beneath his eyes. One lens of his glasses was shattered, his clothes were ragged and torn, and there was a large dark stain cascading down the front of his shirt, coming from a mostly closed wound on his neck. Gods, even looking as terrible as he did, he was still as handsome as he had been when they were kids. He looked tired and frightened and horribly angry, but as soon as he saw him, he went completely pale in disbelief, jaw working furiously as he struggled to find something to say.
The man by the window grinned. “Hello, Petya. It’s been a while.”

1st of all; of course Keegans an omega, have you seen him! Boys got birthing hips he needs to put them to use somehow. [speaking of which how ok are you with mpreg?I don't want to cross any boundaries]
2ndly; I imagine that the storage closet in Elias’s office is big enough to fit a mattress, so it's a pretty decked out nest in there, like i'm talking fairy lights and weighted blankets. It's about 80% Elias’s things, but Keegan has his stuff scattered around. It's very easy to tell when Keegan is in there napping because you can hear his sleepy puring through the door. Speaking of snacks, Elias has a mini fridge in his office that's stacked with all their favourites. It has a blanket hastily thrown over it to hide it from the others. [which surprisingly works].
3rdly; Absolutely like ducklings! In my version of omegaverse, if a pup imprints on somebody that they dont have a prior relationship with, that can cause their family to be investigated, so Gabriel definitely had custody of them both for at least a little while, to this day they both have rooms at Gabriel's place. Aside from that, he absolutely dotes on them and Ajax and Keegan can practically get away with anything as long as Gabriel is the first person to hear about it. I have a funny scenario exemplifying this in my head, would you like to hear it? Most of the time the other Ghosts use this to get extended breaks, like going to the beach instead of training.
Also Gabriel and Elias have a scoreboard hidden away somewhere that keeps track of how many times one of them gets called “dad” accidentally or otherwise.
-Omega
You right, you right. Man’s too pretty.
I assumed Mpreg comes with the territory that is omegaverse. Package deal kinda thing. (Good on you for double checking, pat pat. If somehow ambiguous; yes I’m alright with mpreg. Just don’t fetishize it.)
I fuckin love weighted blankets. Squish me, panini style.
That closet/nook literally sounds so cozy, I’d go and chill in there… and PURRING oml that’s adorable. He’s like a lil cat. (Catboy Keegan when?)
The blanket over the fridge working has me cackling. Stealth 100. Everyone else is just to dumb to see it. Wheeeeeze
Dad Rorke Dad Rorke Dad Rorke! Ajax and Keegan literally being his sons, him doting on them, aww. I’d love to hear this goofy scenario, hit me with it, open arms for goofy shit.
The Dad scoreboard lmao, they keep track of who gets called dad the most and who is calling them dad the most. Bragging and running bets about who has the most Dad moments.

Honestly I think J Christ might be the first Lil Nas X single that fully just is not working for me. buuuuut I think Panini took a few tries to unlock too so I'll give it a bit, if it's in my head after a week then it'll probably be ok.
honestly though I liked Montero (Call Me By Your Name) but it was absolutely blown out of the water by the rest of that album so mostly I just want another really thoughtful emotionally open album. I think the fact that he makes 2 minute tracks makes so much more sense when they're making this like. jigsaw puzzle of related ideas like they do on the full Montero album (and to a lesser degree in the 7 EP). so you know. more albums I beg of you. Montero is one of a handful of albums that I as a shuffle listener relatively regularly come back and listen through (an honour that also goes to Dirty Computer, Psychodrama, Dark Side of the Moon, and Memento Mori. cause it's gotta be both really tight storytelling and have enough really catchy songs on that I'll want to go on to them).

lil vent. lil rant.
i'm so fucking tired. housemate i never agreed to live with finally came to a head - here's hoping the situation will improve. i'm switching internet providers and they're supposed to be by any time between now and the next 4 hours. my upstairs neighbor keeps letting their dog piss and shit over our porch on top of leaving the back door unlocked (we're in a high theft area so that's not appreciated) and invited children over at 10pm???? on a week night??? last night. they were screaming and running around until who fucking knows when. generally don't mind the upstairs neighbor but their lack of awareness impacts more than just the floor they occupy.
also real fucking sick of housemate i never agreed to live with taking bong rips from 4pm in the afternoon until 8am in the fucking morning. generally they're an alright person**** but them residing here has gone from temp status to permanent. very annoying when they keep making demands about how the living space should be arranged when their name isn't on the lease. not to mention my partner and i are both left handed and they are not - so despite using the kitchen for all of 3 things (toaster, panini press & coffee), they keep making demands about how everything should be arranged (namely that we shouldn't have as many pots and pans as we do despite the fact we use all of them to make our food from scratch).
all this on top of work and other commitments, yaayyy :))

Netherlands, Feb 2023 - Day 3 of 4
The BIG day, most of the reason I had been so desperate to travel to Amsterdam one day. The Van Gogh Museum.
I was incredibly lucky to be able to buy tickets such short notice, as word is they sell out fairly quickly and it’s nearly impossible to get tickets on the day. I bought my ticket for Sun 5th Feb on Thurs 2nd as soon as I had booked my coach.
But first, breakfast. And in true British spirit, I had to try an ‘English Breakfast’
Tumblr media
Majestic: €20.50 (£18.41) for: fried egg, slightly toasted bread, mushrooms, baked beans, roast tomatoes, crispy bacon bits and small sausages + apple juice.
They saw me coming, right? I dropped the ball on this one by walking through a pretty touristy square with an empty stomach and heading towards the first place that did something resembling food. The food wasn’t bad, mostly pretty nice, but the price was unfortunate and I didn’t actually really want it but I had already sat down and been encouraged to order a drink. It filled a hole.
I hopped on the Metro and then a Tram using my pass from the day before and headed to the zoo!
Artis €27.50 (£24.70) entry. I think this also includes the aquarium but it was closed for refurbishment at the time :(
Tumblr media
I love a good zoo, but my bad zoo habit is that I’m mostly interested in the random local birds that just happen to be hanging out. They had some cool animals such two beautiful huge Jaguars, a golden and a black. I couldn’t get a decent photo of either of them but I managed to get a video of the wonderful chuffing sound.
After managing to avoid spending any money in the gift shop, a true achievement for me, I hopped back on the tram and headed to the Van Gogh Museum.
I was early, obviously, so I went for a spot of lunch.
Tumblr media
Irish Coffee + panini: Small Talk €14.20/£12.75
Then it was time, for Clare to drown in the sweet sweet sorrow of the Van Gogh Museum. The (almost) the entire reason I had made this trip, why I had suffered on a coach packed in like sardines, why I had drained my bank account. I actually felt nervous as I walked to the entrance.
What if it didn’t live up to the hype?
It was everything I needed it be to.
I got to see many paintings for the first time in person. Everything was a totally different size than I was expecting. It was overwhelming and emotional being so close, getting to see the texture and brush strokes. There were some paintings and sketches I had never even heard of, and it was great getting to hear and read the stories behind them. I fell in love with these lil guys.
Tumblr media
The audio guide was interactive and had visuals to accompany the segments. It wasn’t actually too busy either, as if the museum has capped it a good amount. Realistically, they could have sold more tickets to churn a profit but everyone would have had a worse experience so I was pretty impressed.
My entry was from 15.00, but the kind people at the door let me in from 14.45 (although it seems to be something they do often as a standard rule rather than a special acceptation for me), and I was there until just before close at 17.00. So I spent about 2 hours wandering around, sobbing quietly.
Here I am looking like a doofus with my tattoo and the work that inspired it. Head of a Skeleton with a Burning Cigarette by Vincent Van Gogh and the Tattoo by Kate. Shout out to the poor lady I wrangled into taking this for me (she took a load which was very kind).
Tumblr media
Vincent Van Gogh Museum €20.00/£17.91 online + Audio Guide €3.50/£3.14
Completely worth every cent. I understand that enjoying the Van Gogh Museum is not exactly a unique thought or experience but there we have it. Lives up to the hype, and for me personally it surpasses it. But that's just one mans opinion.
After emotionally recovering on my journey back to the hostel, I had a few drinks in the bar and bullied a stag do. I did buy them some shots to make up for it though.

This is real...? Chapter Two
Chapter One here
Next Week
Katniss slammed the door closed and pulled her shoes off dramatically, tossing them into the hall closet. It was quiet, which meant Peeta was in his studio. She dragged herself to the back of the house and threw herself onto the couch – nay, the Chaise Lounge. She had had to look up what it was called when they first moved in. It was the only thing in their house that looked like it came from the Victorian age and one of the few items that had been left in the house that they didn’t either repaint or throw away when they had moved in. And Katniss loved the ugly thing.
“Hello my beautiful wife, you seem like you had a great day.” Peeta’s words were dripping with sarcasm.
“Bite me,” she snapped.
“I would, but I’m in the middle of a commission for a client.” He readjusted the photos on the stand beside him and continued painting. She lifted her head so she could see over his shoulder, realizing what she thought was a snow scene was actually a white dog.
“A dog?” she asked skeptically.
“Yes. A dog.” He leaned backed and looked at her. “Mrs. Norman, a regular at the bakery, had to put down her 14-year-old Schnauzer last month. Her husband brought me these photos,” he gestured to the stand, “the other day and asked if I could do something for her.” Katniss nodded and laid her head down. He frowned. Setting down his brush, he stood up and walked to her before squatting down so he was face to face with her. “What’s going on?”
Sighing, she shifted in her seat and felt the tears start to sting her eyes. Shutting them quickly, she shook her head.
“Is Cinna getting more job offers?” he asked quietly. She nodded, her eyes still shut. She took a deep breath and rubbed her face.
“I know it’s stupid to get this upset about a job,” she sat up, “but I love what I do.”
“Kat, Cinna hasn’t taken any offers yet and – ”
“Yet, Peeta, yet,” she stressed her words. “I mean, I don’t know that I could work for anyone else…I’m not the easiest person to get along with.” Peeta smirked and nodded his head in agreement. “Thanks, babe!” she said and shoved him back, causing him to fall on his butt, laughing. “I feel loved.”
“I’m glad!” He got back to his feet, still chuckling. She huffed and crossed her arms. He gave her a sympathetic smile and took her face in his hands. “Try to focus on the fact that Cinna is still here and that you get to do something you love doingand don’t let it ruin your whole weekend.” Dropping a kiss on her forehead, he went back to his painting.
--
Next day
Katniss was startled as the front door of the house was slammed open and then closed.
“I’M STARVING!!” came Prim’s voice from the entry way.
“At least take off your shoes before you track mud and snow everywhere!” she called back. “Little sisters,” she mumbled to herself as she picked up the food she had flung on the floor.
“Why are you making a mess?” Prim asked as she walked around her big sister, not offering to help.
“Because someone scared the shit out of me!” Katniss frowned as she threw away what she had picked up. “You’re lucky I didn’t throw your entire lunch on the floor.” She motioned to the paninis that she had just finished.
“They smell good!” Prim gave her a sweet smile and Katniss had to roll her eyes. She couldn’t believe that her little sister, her little duck, was almost seventeen and in eleventh grade. When she gave Katniss that smile, she had to remind herself that Prim was no longer a child and that she would be graduating next year.
“I bet they taste good too.” She reached over and booped Prim on the nose, who rolled her eyes in return.
“I thought Peeta was going to be here?”
“Studio – can you go tell him that – ”
“No need!” Peeta’s voice behind her made her jump.
“Damn it!” Katniss’s hand flew to her chest. “You guys needs to stop scaring me.”
“Sorry, babe.” But for some reason the giant smile on his face made her think he wasn’t being sincere. “Lil’ sis!” Peeta shouted as he grabbed Prim up into a back cracking hug.
“Okay!” she squeaked. “Need air!”
“So dramatic,” Peeta muttered as he let her go. “Where’s your mom?” Katniss sighed inwardly. She had told Peeta the day before that her mom wasn’t going to be there but she had made the mistake of doing so when he was finishing up a painting – she made a mental note to remind him later of the other important things she had told him during that conversation.
“Traded shifts with the weekend nurse manager,” she turned to Katniss, “She was complaining the entire time she was getting ready this morning about it. I told her that as the head nurse there, she needed to stop being so nice.”
“True,” Katniss agreed. Her mom has been working at that hospital since she had become a nurse. She worked hard and moved up the ranks, getting the promotions only after putting is more effort than she should’ve had to. “Here.” She handed each of them a plate and they sat down at the table to eat.
“I told her that they won’t respect her as the boss if she doesn’t start acting like it.” Prim shrugged. “But what do I know?”
“Hey, how did the college tour go last week?” Peeta asked as he opened a bag of chips. Prim’s scrunched up her face and sighed. “Not great.”
“No, it was fine.” Prim sat down her sandwich and leaned heavily on the table. “It’s just that I’ve been thinking a lot about changing my major.”
“What?!” Katniss sputtered, choking on her food. For as long as she could remember, Prim had wanted to be a nurse like their mom. She had the grades for it and was a natural in a crisis.
“I think what Kat means,” Peeta said as he pattered her on the back as she continued to cough, “Is what are you thinking about switching to?” Prim took a deep breath and straightened her back.
“It’s still in the same field, just more schooling…” she said as she stretched her arms out awkwardly, trying to release some of the tension she was feeling. “Well, a lot more schooling…I want to go to med school.”
“You want to be a doctor?” Peeta asked, impressed.
“Yeah.” Prim smiled shyly.
“That’s awesome!” He raised his hand for her to high five.
“Wow.” Katniss had finally recovered from her coughing fit. “That’s amazing, Prim!” She squeezed her hand. “Dr. Primrose – it has a nice ring to it.”
“Eww!” Prim hated her name. “Dr. Everdeen, thank you very much!”
“So Prim’s going to be a doctor,” Peeta said later that night as they crawled into bed.
“I still can’t believe she is old enough to drive, let alone go to college to become a doctor.” Katniss tossed her arms up. “I’ve decided she can’t grow up any more.” Peeta chuckled as he wrapped his arms around her.
“Is this how you are going to be with our kids?” She raised an eyebrow at him. “Not wanting them to grow up…keep them young forever?”
“Oh, yes. Definitely.” She nodded. “If they are young and at home, I get to control what happens…once they grow up, that’s it.” He kissed her shoulder.
“Kat, you can’t protect everyone forever,” he said nuzzling his nose against her neck.
“And who says I can’t?” she challenged.
“Reality,” he chuckled.
“I don’t like reality.” She felt him shake his head before pressing kisses to her neck as he slid his hand down her body and between her legs.
“I like this reality,” he moaned as she ground her hips back against him.
--
Two days later
From her spot in the booth in Cinna’s kitchen, Katniss could see that it had started to snow again. She sighed as she pulled her knees up under her chin. The roast had another hour before it would be done and she wanted to wait until the last minute to put the dessert together for the dinner party.
“I can take the roast out.” Cinna suddenly appeared above the back of the booth.
“No, it’s my job…besides I need to put the desserts together and I want them to be as fresh as possible.” She sat down her phone and straightened the stack of new recipe cards she had been going through.
“You’re just afraid I’ll mess it up.” He walked around and sat down across from her.
“Yes…yes, I am,” she said with a straight face.
“Probably,” he agreed with a smile. “So, any for me to look through?” He nodded to the recipes.
“Here.” She picked up the smallest pile. “These are the ones I am ninety-five percent sure you are going to like.” She handed it to him and then grabbed the biggest pile. “These are the ones I am pretty sure you are going to like if I make the changes that I’ve written on them.” She sat them down in front of him. “And these I’m still reading through.” She patted the last stack. She started reading through another recipe while Cinna did the same.
“These are all original recipes, aren’t they?” he asked, indicating the small collection in his hand. She shrugged and nodded yes. “They sound amazing.”
“That’s what I’m hoping for.” She smiled.
--
Her drive home had taken her twice as long and there had been several places along the road where she could see cars had slid off. By the time she pulled into their driveway, her nerves were shot and her hands were shaking, made worse when she opened the garage and Peeta’s car wasn’t inside.
Gathering her things, she pulled her phone out and tried to dial Peeta’s number, but he didn’t answer. She clicked through her phone and dialed the bakery as she hung up her coat and it went straight to answering. Huffing in frustrating she slipped out of her shoes and called Henry.
“Hey Katniss!” his cheery voice greeted her.
“Hey – is Peeta still there?” She loved her father-in-law, but it had been a long day and small talk was not on her list right now.
“No, he left about forty minutes ago.” The worry in his voice was evident.
“The roads are terrible…maybe he stopped to help someone out of a ditch,” she suggested, trying to keep her anxiety at bay.
“Probably…call me when he gets home?” Henry asked.
“Of course.”
She dialed his number for the sixth time in ten minutes and was sent straight to voicemail. Groaning in frustration, she flopped onto the couch, debating her choices. Her phone vibrated in her hand.
Peeta home? – Henry
It had been an hour since she had gotten off the phone with him and he was probably a worrying mess too.
Not yet. – Katniss
After sending the text, she slumped on her side and sighed in frustration.
She woke with a start, almost dropping her vibrating phone. She glanced at the clock - she had only been asleep for about twenty minutes. Looking at the caller she groaned – she didn’t have the patience to deal with an Initiative Surveyor and attempted to end the call, shoving the phone into the pocket of her hoodie as she stood up.
“Mrs. Mellark?” a muffled voice came from her pocket as she walked to the kitchen. “Mrs. Mellark? Hello?” Grinding her teeth in frustration, she pulled out her phone, intending to end the call. “Hello? This is in regard to Mr. Mellark….Peeta Mellark.”
“Hello?!” she shouted, bringing the phone up to her face. “Yes – I’m here!”
“Mrs. Katniss Mellark?” the man asked.
“Yes, this is she.”
“Married to Mr. Peeta Mellark?” he clarified.
“Yes.”
“Can you verify your address and Initiative match number?” Katniss quickly rattled off the memorized numbers. “Thank you, Mrs. Mellark.”
“Katniss,” she corrected.
“Thank you, Katniss.” The man paused.
“You said something about Peeta?” she whispered.
“Yes, ma’am…your husband was in an accident.”

I think tumblr ate my ask or it just didn't sent but what are your favorite Bastille songs / what are some songs you recommend?
i did NOT get this ask im very sorry anon.
it's genuinely hard for me to narrow down cause bastille is pretty up there in terms of favorite artists. i love all their shit, but a special mention goes out to their second studio album wild world since it's the one that made me a Fan
uh so here's a primer i guess i spent too much time on this lmao.
if you wanna listen to their big hits:
flaws - their first single in the uk. if you ever listened to ship playlists on 8tracks in like 2013-2015 then you've probably heard this song or a variant on it at some point.
pompeii - this is the song that really put them on the map and you definitely know it. it dominated the charts all over the place.
happier - the marshmello song that you've definitely heard before too. i think bastille wrote this for justin bieber or some shit but then decided they liked it too much to give it to him? lmao. anyway if you're not digging the version you hear on the radio all the time i recommend trying the stripped down version
good grief - their big hit off their second album. big in the uk, didn't really make as many waves elsewhere, but it's a really solid song anyway. one of those "upbeat tunes that's actually really fucking sad" ones
things we lost in the fire - another one off their first album. if you live in a wildfire area this might not be one to turn to. or maybe you'll find it cathartic idk i certainly do!!
quarter past midnight - a song about escapism, as was fitting when it was released in 2018 and equally fitting now. running away for a night of fucking around with friends, craving any kind of brief departure from the chaos of the modern world
skulls - this one was not a hit or a single and is technically a bonus track but i'm including it because once again if you ever clicked on a ship playlist on 8tracks in like 2013-2015 you've heard this one. and you know what that was justified this one is also good
if you wanna feel existentially depressed:
their whole discography. i mean i kid but i also don't. that's just kind of how bastille does it. BUT IN ALL SERIOUSNESS ones that hit me in particular would beeee
two evils - kind of a grim, haunting one introspecting about morality of the self.
oblivion - musing about the afterlife, love, and how time changes all of us.
those nights - contemplating what it is we seek when we plunge into reckless escapism, and the inherent loneliness of it; how even when surrounded by people there's still the pressure of the world outside, continuously coming to pieces
the draw - this one was written about the pull of pursuing a career in music vs. staying home with family and friends. in a broader sense, it can apply to a lot of things. i always felt it resonated with feelings of paranoia and displacement
winter of our youth - discusses childhood, nostalgia, and regret. if it feels like everything's slipping away, is it easier to relive the past, especially if the past is tinted rose?
sleepsong - loneliness, desperation, and the cyclical, abyss-like nature of all it encapsulates
if you want discussion of serious topics:
final hour - a bonus track off their second album that also became a bonus track off their third album? anyway this song talks about climate change and gun control. happy stuff
doom days - this one talks about, uh, everything! doomscrolling, political divides, escalating national tensions, climate change again, etc.
the currents - a song centered on political rhetoric and the power that figureheads have over the masses, the way they can orchestrate hate. basically it's not so subtly aimed at donald trump lmao, dan's literally sung it as much in a few live settings
WHAT YOU GONNA DO??? - social media addiction and the way capitalism and corporate interests have annexed our online experiences, fighting desperately for our attention as they seek to monetize every available aspect of our lives
four walls (the ballad of perry smith) - well this one is about uh. perry smith. who was charged with the death penalty for killing 4 people in the late 50's. but it's less directly about him and more a discussion of the morality of the death penalty and capital punishment
snakes - burgeoning anxieties and the impulse to turn to easy outs, like ignorance or alcoholism, to escape the world's global problems
if you want some pop culture sprinkled on top:
icarus - greek mythology. i like this one because it addresses something that i feel isn't addressed enough in discussions of this myth, which is that icarus is a very young lad. less about the pride of the fall, and more about the inherent tragedy of that.
laura palmer - the whole song is a david lynch shoutout. i've never seen twin peaks myself but the song still slaps.
daniel in the den - christian mythology. discusses the biblical tale of daniel in the lion's den and links that up to themes of betrayal and family.
poet - this one's a double feature, referencing both william shakespeare's sonnet 18 and edmund spencer's sonnet 75. also one of my favorites.
send them off! - this is another one of my favorites of theirs. it's also been described by dan as "othello meets the exorcist" and it very much delivers there
if you want something uplifting:
joy - while bastille (understandably) has a bit of reputation as a band that makes sad music about sad things, they've definitely got some happier songs in their catalogue. pun intended cha ching. this one's one of their more straightforwardly happy tunes
survivin' - this was a song they wrote while they were touring and then felt weird about releasing once the panini hit because it felt a bit on the nose. they ended up releasing it anyway and i am so glad they did cause it's a mood
act of kindness - the "happy" part here is debatable but i'm gonna include it anyway. it’s when someone does something nice for you and that impulse Changes you way down deep you know???
warmth - one of those "the world's going to shit but at least we have each other" kinds of tunes
the anchor - one of those "the world's going to shit but you're the one fucking thing that's still keeping me here" kinds of tunes
give me the future - their latest single as of this writing and one of the more optimistic tracks in their catalogue imo! it's yearning, but it's also with a genuine hope for the future.
and LASTLY. because im going to take every chance i can to plug this band. im going to throw some collabs and covers at you because there's one thing this band does SUPER well and it's collabs and covers.
of the night - this is the big one. it mashes up rhythm of the night by corona and rhythm is a dancer by SNAP! and it's so good they still do this one live and it goes off every time.
no angels - a mashup of "no scrubs" by TLC and "angels" by the xx, poured into a strangely mournful tune with clips from the hitchcock movie psycho. doesn't sound like it should work but it does. kinda really does.
torn apart - with GRADES and lizzo no less!!! it's got two parts but they're both excellent listen to them both
weapon - collab with angel haze, dan priddy, and F*U*G*Z and one of my absolute favorites
remains - remix of their song "skulls" but featuring rag'n'bone man and skunk anansie that adds an entire new dimension to the song, really fucking excellent
old town road mashup - lil nas x's old town road meets lizzo's good as hell meets radiohead's talk show host meets talking heads' road to nowhere meets the osmond's crazy horse. "what the fuck that shouldn't work" i KNOW and yet here it is!! BLATANTLY BANGING!!!
we can't stop - one of the few times dan smith subtly changes the lyrics of the song he's covering (most of the time he opts to keep the original pronouns and the like, which is very nice to see). anyway this one mixes miley cyrus's we can't stop with eminem's lose yourself and billy ray cyrus's achy breaky heart. and also the lion king's i just can't wait to be king is there. yes i know it sounds batshit especially because the whole thing is surprisingly melodic and heartfelt and you know what it works.
anyone but me x nightmares - mashing up joy crookes' anyone but me with easy life's nightmares and absolutely one of my favorites.
bad guy mashup - how many songs can they include with the word "bad" in the title? we've got bad guy (billie eilish), bad decisions (bastille), bad romance (lady gaga), and bad blood (taylor swift). bastille even has a song called bad blood and they didnt use it. they used taylor swift's version. also the distinctive guitar riff from dick dale's misirlou is there.
somebody mashup - how many songs can they include with the word "some" in the title? someone like you (adele), somebody told me (the killers), somebody to love (queen), use somebody (kings of leon), and someone you loved (lewis capaldi). seriously these guys take mashups to a new level.
final song - this is a cover of MØ's final song. it also adds in craig david's 7 days and, impossibly enough, europe's final countdown. how does it work. how.
ALL RIGHT. THATS ALL IVE GOT IN ME. HOPE THIS HELPED ANON AND IM SORRY IF THIS IS TOO MUCH

just some updates:
I wrote a story for work and the dean of my college fucking loved it and she thinks I’m basically brilliant and I am living.
I designed a book for the state’s dept. of education (I can’t remember if I shared about that already), and today I learned that it’s gonna be distributed NATIONALLY (!!!!!) and the guy that I worked with on it couldn’t stop gushing about how nice it looks. I just have a few last minute edits to make and then it’ll be ready for print!
I’m going to the beach next week and we’re literally just gonna stay in our lil condo/on the beach the whole time and tf away from people bc we’re still v much in a panini. I can’t stop feeling guilty for taking a break and going somewhere to celebrate turning 30 and how hard I’ve worked this year and it sucks. also I want to cry every time I think about how my cats and my chickens and turkeys can’t come with me (like it’s getting to the point where I just can’t think about it) this is what happens when I raise animals during a pandemic.
I’m gaining confidence and have been steadily feeling better about myself (like my personality, skills, abilities, intelligence) and it feels really nice. it’s about goddamn time. I think all the time about what lil 2014 me would think about myself. I think she’d think I was pretty fucking cool.
the money jar I made seems to be working. I called out specifically to my ancestors and my house knocked as I was talking, right above my head. (my house is haunted, but I don’t think this was the same entity) I’m excited to have my first successful working.
