To My Best Friend
Title: To My Best Friend
Author: SomeonexSomeone
Word Count: 1609
AU: BestFriend!Johnny
Summary: It’s soft BestFriend!Johnny hours, where you both have to learn that separation is a part of growing up.
Authors Note: Wow! Another story without pairing. This was sparked from my roommate and I realizing one day we will have to live away from each other, which is absolutely heartbreaking. Tweaked a little to fit Johnny, but the feelings are still there. As always, comments and criticism are welcome!
When they first left each other after high school, they made a mutual promise to facetime once a week. Usually, this involved watching movies or tv together, but sometimes it would just be quiet - only scratching pens or the keys clicking away to fill the void of conversation. It was just as good as being in the same room, right? But Johnny’s dream took him to Korea, working alongside other students as they all worked towards debuting into the music world.
That day...it was impossible not to think about it fondly. The day that Johnny left for Korea was monumental for two reasons. One, Johnny Suh was accepted into his dream company and had a high likelihood of debuting with major success. And two, Johnny Suh was a sneaky genius.
"There's a flight that leaves in two hours to New York City," Johnny offhandedly mentioned as the two of you stood in front of the departures. Johnny was finally heading off to Korea of officially start major training, and as his best friend, you would be accompanying him up until the absolute last minute. How could you not? Your best friend in the whole world was leaving for a completely different country for who knows how long. There was no way you weren’t going to at least party it up a little with him before he was gone forever (and by ‘party it up’ it meant sightseeing and trying not to cry about his leaving). So here you now stood, feet planted firmly in front of the ‘Departing’ board, trying with minimal luck to find your gate. You hummed at his statement, but made no further comment, still searching the board. "You should take it." That made you look up at him instantly.
"What?”
"I said, you should take it. The plane. To New York City." Johnny's voice was still unreadable. You scrunched your nose at his tone.
"Why on earth would I get on a plane to New York?"
"Because it's the best location for you to go." You finally turned your body fully to your best friend, but Johnny continued to stare straight forward.
"Johnny, we're supposed to be dropping you off at SM, not taking a surprise detour to New York." Johnny signed heavily, his hands coming up to rest gently on your shoulders.
"You're my best friend in the whole world, and I hope you know I love you more than anything. But your ass is getting on that plane." You opened your mouth in protest, but all it took was a shake of Johnny's head to get you to shut up. "The lease on your parent's apartment is up at the end of this month, which, may I remind you, is in 8 days. I know they would love for you to continue to stay there, but I know you hate how closely they watch you. And I know you haven't been able to find another place - don't say anything, I'm still talking - despite your lame attempts to hide it. New York has everything you'd need, which includes tons of opportunities just waiting for you. You need to take that chance and go for it. You'll regret it your whole life if you don't."
Would you regret it?
Yes, it was true that you hadn't been able to find another place to live, but nothing you had looked at felt right. It just felt wrong to stay in Chicago without Johnny. And yeah, you were slacking on school. It had been months since college started but you had put off applying for so long, too wrapped up in lame excuses - I'm tired, I have work, I can't do it right now. And after your horrible manager fired you for a mistake you were wrongfully blamed for, you hadn’t been doing much. Maybe jumping straight in would be the best option. You would have no excuse to slack off...
"But how would I even live there? I don't have enough money to live in New York," you finally said. Johnny gave you a sly smile.
"I heard there's a lady who owns a building in Queens who is renting to poor college students. Apparently, she has a real soft spot for struggling kids. Something about being a good person or whatever.” Johnny reached up and ruffled your hair playfully. “And, you know, since I already did all this research you should also know that your plane ticket can be exchanged for another flight.” Softly, he added, “If you wanted to, that is."
"Johnny, this is crazy!” You couldn’t help it. Your voice came out shrill, but the surprise was too much to keep your voice calm. It echoed off the walls of the large room, so in a quieter voice, you continued, “You want me to completely drop my life just like that? What about the rest of my stuff?"
"Come on, the flight is in two hours. Plenty of time to get back to the apartment and pack. I know for a fact that all of the stuff you really care about can fit into a suitcase."
You were spellbound. Your friend - your beautiful, kind-hearted, absolutely bat-shit crazy best friend - had gone out of his way in the most stressful time in his life to make sure that his best friend was going to be okay. The tears couldn't be stopped as they started to roll down your cheeks - huge, wet globs that turned black from your cheap mascara and formed a Y shape around your quivering lips. You couldn't help it. You threw your arms around Johnny, sobbing loudly in the middle of the airport for all to see. Onlookers starred as Johnny smiled and patted you gently on the back, stroking your hair.
You did end up taking that plane to New York. You had to practically beg to live in the house Johnny recommended, and spent your first day in New York sending out as many resumes as you could. Full-time, part-time, internships - whatever you could find, you sent. Worked as a waitress at a horrible nightclub near the apartment for a month. Lived like you were in college, with no solid furniture or regular eating habits. Even lived without heat for a while just to keep the WIFI running. But, you were happy.
Across the world, Johnny was thriving in his new location. You called as much as you could, which was a lot more than Johnny was available. Still, just the happy melody of his tone was enough to keep you relatively worry-free. Johnny told you stories of the amazing people he’d met already, a boy named Sehun was particularly fun to be around, apparently, and he made you laugh with all the crazy things he somehow managed to get up to.
Months continued on and you got an internship position at a company for something you were really interested in. Unpaid, for the first six months, but better than nothing. You still worked as a waitress, thankfully at a nice restaurant that didn’t have men leering at you the whole time, waiting to apply for a full-time position. But, even better, the college in New York accepted your application, a hefty scholarship taking a weight off your shoulders and the answer much too easy. You remember the smile on Johnny’s face, megawatt despite the dark circles under his eyes, and congratulated you a thousand times over. A few weeks later, a package full of Korean treats arrived in the mail, a beautiful handwritten card with almost completely illegible handwriting attached along with it that only read ‘love you bitch’. You still had it to this day, hung up on the wall among your other photos.
And when you finally earned enough money, Johnny flew all the way from Korea during his break to help you apartment hunt. It was, of course, exactly like the movies portrayed with blue skies, mile-high skyscrapers, and bustling streets - except every apartment was dingy and small and could barely contain a person, let alone a bed. But you still laughed along with the realtors, both desperate and otherwise (because let’s be honest - most people would live in a roach-infested apartment just to stay in New York), ate cheap hot dogs in between showings, and even managed to drive down to Chicago so Johnny could see his family (which was practically your family too).
And, for the first time since high school, you and Johnny were able to eat together, hug each other, and hang out day and night in person, not keeping your relationship of fast facetime calls with blurry images and indistinguishable audio. You realized just how much you missed Johnny Suh, just how much your life revolved around your best friend, and how much of a comfort Johnny was for you. When no one else was there, Johnny always was, ready to hold your hand our of the darkness.
In that quiet, black night, you rolled over and hugged Johnny close, just one more time. In the morning, Johnny Suh and you would once again be across the world from one another. In the morning, Johnny Suh would be boarding his plane back to Korea and you would be signing a form to stay permanently in New York, and your lives will once again be separated. But, that’s all for the morning. For now, you will hold Johnny close, listening to his deep breath as he finally gets a good night's sleep, feel as his soft hair glides through his fingers, smile as he wraps his arms just as tightly around you, and treasure the moments you still have left.

2019: My year in K-Dramas - Part 1
I’ve been getting into kdramas for a few years now, but I usually only watch one or two at a time. This year I watched a lot more (and that’s not counting The Bride of Habaek, which I dropped when it became clear it was a very bad adaptation of the manhwa; Crash Landing on You, which started airing a couple of weeks ago; nor Tomorrow With You, which I haven’t yet finished, what’s probably not a good sign), a few being rewatchs of old shows that I like. Seeing as it’s unlikely I’ll ever write up full reviews for each like I did for Goblin (you can read my review here), I decided to compile this list to tell you what I liked and didn’t like about each, what I feel worked and what didn’t. I’m also including a qualitative metric (Rewatch meter) that tries to gauge how likely it is that I’ll find myself returning to the show in the future (Low, Medium, High). Naturally, your very own meter may differ from mine.
For future reference, these are the shows I watched in 2019 and that I aim to cover in this series of posts:
While You Were Sleeping (2017)
W (2016)
My Strange Hero (2018)
The Secret Life of my Secretary (2019)
Angel’s Last Mission: Love (2019)
Strong Woman Do Bong-Soon (2017)
When the Camellia Blooms (2019)
Bring it on, Ghost (2016)
One More Time (2016)
My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (2010)
My Love From The Star (2014)
Descendants of the Sun (2016)
Regardless of which show did better, overall, I find myself drifting more and more towards Korean dramas than your run-of-the-mill American TV show, save for a few bright exceptions, such as The Expanse. Heck, they’re better than most Hollywood movies nowadays.
Since I’ll probably end up writing a lot, I’ve decided to split this review list into two parts. Let’s start with the last kdrama I watched and work my way backwards... if I can remember, that is.
WARNING! There will be spoilers so read at your own risk.
While You Were Sleeping (2017)
Bae Suzy as Nam Hong-Joo, and Lee Jong-Suk as Jung Jae-Chan.
Release Date: September 27 - November 16, 2017
Episodes: 16
Available on: Viki
Summary: Nam Hong-Joo is a young journalist who has had bad dreams about the future since she was a kid, but she has never been able to change the outcome. Jung Jae-Chan is a rookie prosecutor who moves in across the street with his younger brother. When Jae-Chan has a prophetic dream of his own about Hong-Joo being involved in a car accident, and the tragic events that follow, he makes an impulsive decision to interfere, changing Hong-Joo’s fate and that of police officer Han Woo-Tak in the process. When the three of them start having dreams of one another, they realize their lives are somehow entwined. Together, they decide to use their knowledge of the future for good, but changing someone’s fate is never straightforward, and the consequences for doing so may be more than they can handle.
What I liked:
The concept and writing. This is the second show I’ve watched, in chronological order, with Lee Jong-Suk as a lead where I’m really attracted by the concept. Imagine if you could take the precogs from Minority Report and give them (relatively) normal lives inside a kdrama. This is the result. Even better, having Hong-Joo and Woo-Tak have different and often contradicting dreams about the future makes for an interesting twist, as we see prosecutor Jae-Chan struggling to navigate these prophetic waters in search for the best outcome. Curiously, the show makes a point early on about how Jae-Chan’s the variable upon which their dreams diverge, but nothing really comes off it. Naturally, the concept of multiple diverging futures gives the show’s cinematography a chance to play around a bit, often comparing the same event in alternative timelines, or in the same timeline but at different moments in time. It may sound complicated, but it’s pretty to grasp once you start watching. Furthermore, the writing’s pretty tight all around, what’s not a mean feat when you’re juggling multiple realities, with some very emotional payoffs as the show draws to a close. Perhaps its weakest point is exactly how this prophetic dream ability is transferred from person to person (a theory is put forward which doesn’t entirely convince me), and the unnerving (and unexplored, fortunately) implications should someone less honourable were to have these dreams.
youtube
When The Nightmares Started. This is the best track in the entire show and if it’s not the main theme, it damn well should be. It has moments of calm, a hint of romance and hope, and that awesome shit-is-about-to-get-real cue starting at 1:38 that never fails to make a scene tons more epic. Your dish-washing experience will be 100% more epic playing to this track, guaranteed!
The Justice League (and friends). This show could’ve probably gotten on my bad side real fast if it had created a villain with the same superpower as the heroes (depends on the execution to be honest) and, indeed, I thought that was the direction it would inevitably take, revealing at some point that (evil) defense attorney Lee Yoo-Beom also had prophetic dreams and had been using them for his benefit all along, muahahaha! Instead, the show gave us three average people, connected by their prophetic dreams, who decide to team up and use these visions for good. It’s not always easy to change the future, as it has many ramifications, and therein lies the show’s narrative potential that it manages to exploit, perchance to its fullest. Even in the very last episode there’s a hint that maybe the people they’ve helped throughout also have dreams of their own that they use to help others, sort of a pay-it-forward chain. It may be somewhat unrealistic, but it’s a good note to end the show on all the same.
Kim Won-Hae as Choi Dam-Dong. Easily the best supporting character in the show, delivering a stronger and more rewarding performance than in Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, where he played two characters (he was pretty funny as the over-the-top head of development planning at Ainsoft), veering towards the more serious/dramatic/emotional end of the spectrum, although with some comedic elements mixed in. I was surprised by how strong his arc turned out to be, and my respect for his character went up by several points when his arc comes to a close and we finally put all the pieces of the puzzle together. This man can do both comedy and drama, so kudos to him.
What I didn’t like:
Mr. Perfect (also known as Han Woo-Tak). It’s not that I dislike him, far from it. Woo-Tak is so good, smart, selfless, and even good-looking, that he kinda undermines the OTP just by existing. He’s really setting unreasonable standards for any man to compete against. I mean, he even plays Cupid for the OTP... while also being in love with Hong-Joo! On the plus side, the show doesn’t really try to push the romantic triangle angle, what usually has mixed results. The one thing I did mind is how the show hints at him potentially being a better attorney/prosecutor than the main lead since that’s kind of Jae-Chan’s thing. I mean, if you take everything that makes the lead special and give it to someone else, is he still the lead?
OTP: A stronger performance from Lee Jong-Suk than in W, complemented by a relatively (and I cannot stress this word enough) weaker performance by Suzy in some aspects (I think Han Hyo-Joon’s Oh Yeon-Joo in W does sad love better than Suzy as Nam Hong-Joo, but it’s a matter of preference), results in a better pairing with more chemistry. Suzy is great and lovable at being the quirky Nam Hong-Joo (watch the video below if you’re unconvinced) and Jung Jae-Chan is a lot more vulnerable than Kang Chul ever was, but I was left wondering at times whether this couple would’ve gotten as much traction were it not for the strength of their past connection (especially with Mr. Perfect around).
youtube
Verdict: What can I say? While You Were Sleeping was an excellent show from beginning to end. If I were to nitpick, I would’ve chosen the end wedding to be the one between Jae-Chan and Hong-Joo since that honestly makes more sense, and maybe I would’ve made Woo-Tak more of a bro than a somewhat-but-not-entirely romantic rival (think Seo Dae-Young in Descendants of the Sun).
Rewatch meter: High
W (2016)
Han Hyo-Joo as Oh Yeon-Joo, and Lee Jong-Suk as Kang Chul.
Release Date: July 20 - September 14, 2016
Episodes: 16
Available on: Viki
Summary: W is a bestselling webtoon by cartoonist Oh Seong-Moo that follows the adventures of Kang Chul, an Olympic gold medalist framed for the murder of his family, who’s eventually acquitted and becomes a multi-millionaire who fights crime (think Bruce Wayne but without the costume). Tired of his creation, Seong-Moo decides it’s time to kill the protagonist and put an end to the series (much like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle decided to kill Sherlock Holmes at the Reichenbach Falls). Oh Yeon-Joo is Seong-Moo’s daughter, a doctor and passionate fan of W, who is one day mysteriously transported to the world of the manhwa, where she sees a dying Kang Chul and saves his life. Intrigued by his mysterious saviour, Kang Chul decides to learn out more about her and Yeon-Joo finds herself constantly returning to the world of the manhwa. Will Kang Chul learn the truth about her and his world? And if so, what will be the consequences?
What I liked:
The concept. It’s not an altogether original concept, and I’m reminded of Schwarzenegger’s Last Action Hero (Who Framed Roger Rabbit before that), but it’s also not one that you see often on the screen, big or small. The idea of being able to enter the world you’re reading about and meeting the characters you know and love is extremely appealing and there is some fangirling from our protagonist initially. Naturally, since she knows everything about this world, it’s good fun to see her inadvertedly reveal something that she couldn’t possibly know and deal with the reactions/consequences. What’s better is how Yeon-Joo tries to figure out the laws of the manhwa world by applying the real-world concepts of cliffhangers and dramatic revelations, often to hilarious effect. Seeing how the manhwa continues to write itself to reflect events in W’s world, and the reactions by readers (and by Yeon-Joo) in the real world is really entertaining, especially those from the more passionate W fans.
The transition between animation and live-action. I love the blend between animation and live action, as in the example below. There are more subtle transitions, like when a character’s hand oscillates between the real world and the cartoon world. Perhaps it’s a very simple filter but it looks good. Also, what little we see of the manhwa is very well drawn.
Han Hyo-Joo as Oh Yeon-Joo. Despite the fact that Yeon-Joo’s character becomes less proactive in the second half of the series (as I will discuss below), she was the one who really carried the show for me, certainly on the emotional side of the spectrum, where Kang Chul felt a little flat throughout (to be fair, he’s more the analytical type and he’s a manhwa character). She was also able to convey humour quite well, especially in the earlier, funnier, episodes.
The execution (of the first half). The first episode doesn’t waste a second setting up the story and there is never a dull moment. Watching Yeon-Joo read the latest episode of the manhwa and witness her reaction as she sees herself in the comic was gripping and I was eager to see what the next episode would bring. The show was also fairly consistent with the rules of travelling back and forth and what one could and couldn’t do in the cartoon world. We were witnessing an epic struggle between the cartoonist who wanted to kill his creation with his stylus and the daughter who wanted to protect him so much that she had willed herself into his world (if that’s not a good setup for a love story, I don’t know what is). And all the while, Kang Chul was putting the pieces of the puzzle together in his universal and unrelenting search for truth. Every episode brought something new to the table and, much like the manhwa, ended with some revelation or cliffhanger that kept you on the edge of your seat asking for more. Unfortunately, I think that was also its downfall.
What I didn’t like:
The execution (of the second half) and the overall pacing. I think the (relative) downfall of this series was trying to do too much too early. It worked for the first half because the show had a lot of material it could burn through and, in a way, it was refreshing that it was willing to do so. Sadly, my thoughts eventually turned from, “What’s going to happen next?” to “What can even happen next?” The story was moving so fast that I began to wonder where exactly it was going, and that’s when some of the flaws started to seep through. Episode 9 focused on the aftermath of Yeon-Joo resetting events, thus making Kang Chul forget all about her. While I certainly felt for her when she met her amnesiac husband, this was largely thanks to Han Hyo-Joo’s performance (and good track selection), for Kang Chul had been her husband in name only. Had we previously seen more episodes of their life together, this scene would’ve been a lot more impactful, and her desperate crying outside the operating room more heartfelt. Then, the plot thickens as we move into the (overly) dramatic second half of the show, with the introduction of a villain who knows about the real world and starts manipulating events in the manhwa for his benefit... by possessing cartoonist Oh Seong-Moo! What? This was never established as even remotely possible! (not to mention it doesn’t make sense) As you can imagine, this is whereabouts the rules of this universe start to break down and anything goes. Furthermore, when this villain is defeated in Episode 13, the show suddenly remembered it already had an antagonist perfectly cast for the part and finally decided to put him to use, although too little too late for my taste. As if that weren’t enough, a character is killed because drama, since any other explanation would make no fucking sense. This death is entirely nonsensical and I was beginning to conclude the show should have ended a lot sooner.
The amount of flashbacks/dreams/recaps/plans. I don’t mind a good recap or a flashback every now and then, but there came a point where the show started abusing this narrative device a little too much. The show spent a lot of time either: going over things we already know; featuring lengthy dream sequences that are very transparent and serve no purpose (although, incidentally, would make for a better ending); or laying out how events are supposed to go only for them to go in a completely different direction. While they are sometimes necessary, most of the time they were just padding that actually detracted from the story.
How secondary the supporting characters in the manhwa truly are. I know Kang Chul is supposed to be the protagonist but his bodyguard and secretary aren’t given a whole lot to work with throughout the show. I wish they had been active participants in learning the truth of their world rather than passive bystanders.
How Yeon-Joo becomes less proactive in the second half. Maybe it’s just a feeling, but I think our female protagonist became more reactive and less proactive in the second half, with Kang Chul being the one who mostly directed the course of events. It didn’t help that she kept fainting every now and then, what meant she had to spend some time in bed, what was a shame since she was the more interesting character. To be honest, I think the whole father arc should’ve been over and done with in the first half, with Yeon-Joo stepping up to be the new cartoonist.
OTP: Undercooked, but Han Hyo-Joo manages to almost convince me.
Verdict: It’s hard not to say W is one of the most refreshing shows I’ve seen in a while, even despite its more prominent flaws in the second half. I don’t like how powerful the drawing tablet became, especially after it was established that the manhwa could, at times, overrule the will of the real world, as clearly depicted when Kang Chul refuses to commit suicide. I’d rather the manhwa characters had resolved things on their own, aided by Yeon-Joo, without having to resort to some ultra-powerful plot device. Furthermore, I think the show should’ve taken things a bit more slowly rather than try to surprise us every episode, and use that time to build the relationship between Yeon-Joo and Kang Chul. Another thing I feel the show didn’t exploit to its fullest was the fact that Yeon-Joo knows just about everything that’s transpired in W’s world, what maybe could’ve aided Kang Chul in his investigation (sadly, this is undermined by the fact that the murderer really has no identity, what I find odd). Last but not least, Kang Chul never remembering his “past life” was a missed opportunity.

My Strange Hero (2018)
From left to right: Jo Bo-Ah as Son Soo-Jung; Yoo Seung-Ho as Kang Bok-Soo; and Kwak Dong-Yeon as Oh Se-Ho.
Release Date: December 10, 2018 - February 4, 2019
Episodes: 32
Available on: Viki
Summary: When Kang Bok-Soo was a high school student, he was falsely accused of committing acts of violence and ended up expelled from school. Those who brought the accusations against him were his first love, Son Soo-Jung, and a fellow student, Oh Se-Ho. Nine years later, Bok-Soo saves Soo-Jung’s life and suddenly finds himself a mediatic sensation. In order to improve the school’s somewhat tarnished image, he’s invited back to finish his studies. Bok-Soo hesitates, but when he learns Soo-Jung is a teacher there and Se-Ho is the new director, a latent desire to get revenge surfaces. Will Bok-Soo finally get his revenge on the people who wronged him nine years ago? Or will he spend most of his time doing anything but? The latter.
What I liked:
Teacher Park. He’s the kind of teacher everyone would like to have in high school and an example of moral rectitude that Soo-Jung tries to follow. You can tell he really cares for all the students and always tries to be fair and just, no matter the personal cost.
Soo-Jung’s arc. Probably the character who experiences the most growth throughout the show, in no small part thanks to her starting point. She’s the only teacher who stands up for her students, is willing to expose the corruption in the school, and goes so far as to quit her job because she feels she didn’t earn her spot fair and square (despite Oh Se-Ho telling her she was hired because of her qualifications). It is worth noting that when Mr Park gives the other teachers the chance to own up and resign honourably nobody does.
What I didn’t like:
The series meanders a lot early on. Initially, I watched till Episode 14 and dropped it because nothing was really going on. Bok-Soo says he wants to get revenge but his heart really isn’t into it. He certainly doesn’t have a plan like, say, Edmond Dantes in The Count of Monte Cristo, or Emily Thorne in Revenge. In fact, for those first 14 episodes, it only seemed he went there to suffer some more at the hands of the same people who wronged him all those years ago. What leads me to...
Son Soo-Jung isn’t a very likable protagonist initially. I don’t know if this is done on purpose to get us to side with Bok-Soo, but it doesn’t seem like a very smart strategy to have us dislike the lead’s main love interest for almost half the length of the series. I mean, that’s what the antagonist is for. It seems like at every opportunity she twists the knife on Bok-Soo’s back a little more, so much so that a hurt Bok-Soo outright demands, “Why don’t you just ask me what happened instead of constantly making assumptions?” (I’m paraphrasing) Her response, basically telling him to fuck off, didn’t win her any points in my book. That’s about when the writers probably realized their mistake and started filling us in on how Soo-Jung’s life was also miserable after Bok-Soo was expelled so please don’t hate her. They also pull a 180 when she stands up for Bok-Soo during a disciplinary hearing, what I thought was quite out of character for her at the time. The two seem to patch up their relationship awfully fast, what struck me as odd as they didn’t seem to have much chemistry. Having said that, Soo-Jung’s character certainly grows after Episode 14 and has a very satisfying arc, ultimately being the only teacher worth a damn in this school, other than Mr Park.
“Is Kang Bok-Soo’s revenge finally starting?” After I initially dropped this show at the Episode 14 mark, a video popped up in my YT feed with that title (only they used the actor’s name instead of the character’s). It was a scene where Bok-Soo went about exposing the many deeds of corruption within the school. Great, I thought, shit is finally hitting the fan... in Episode 26. I resumed watching from that mark until the end. The series had finally managed to get me invested, almost as it was over, and I decided to watch the episodes I’d missed.
OTP: There are some cute moments but I still didn’t feel the chemistry (what, ultimately, is my entirely subjective take).
Verdict: I don’t feel this is a true romance drama like others on this list, if ever it tried to be, what’s decidedly strange because there are many episodes dedicated to exploring the relationship between Bok-Soo and Soo-Jung with little else going on. Instead, I see it as more of a critique on the Korean education system and the immense pressures students are subjected to in order to meet unreasonable standards, with some romance elements sprinkled on it so that it’s not too depressing. That’s my take on it anyway. As such, it has some enjoyable aspects to it, like seeing Bok-Soo share nuggets of wisdom every now and then, or the students standing up for Bok-Soo and their school, or the revenge/investigation finally kicking into high gear. It’s just unfortunate it took so long to get there and didn’t really encourage me to do so.

The Secret Life of my Secretary (2019)
From left to right: Koo Ja-Sung as Ki Dae-Joo; Kim Young-Kwang as Do Min-Ik; Jin Ki-Joo as Jung Gal-Hee; and Kim Jae-Kyung as Veronica Park/Park Ok-Sun.
Release Date: May 6 - June 25, 2019
Episodes: 32
Available on: Viki
Summary: The story follows Do Min-Ik, a prominent director at T&T Mobile Media, and his secretary, Jung Gal-Hee, as together they deal with the onset of an illness that prevents Do Min-Ik from seeing faces, the result of a possible attempt on Min-Ik’s life by some unknown party. On the corporate drama side, this undermines his shot to succeed his (jerk of an) uncle as Chairman of the company, and we see Min-Ik and Gal-Hee struggling to hide the truth of his illness and overcome the many obstacles set on their way to chairmanship. On the romance side, his inability to recognize faces causes him to mistake his secretary for Veronica Park, a rich heiress and leading figure in the film industry, whom he eventually falls in love with... what is kind of a problem since the real Veronica Park develops a crush on Min-Ik’s best friend, Ki Dae-Joo (also a director at T&T), while Gal-Hee falls in love with her boss. And, just in case we didn’t have enough corporate drama, we learn early on that someone may be embezzling from T&T and all the signs point to Dae-Joo. How will this all turn out?
What I liked:
Do Min-Ik and Jung Gal-Hee working together. Min-Ik is one sharp boss, and the moment he’s unable to recognize faces, he starts devising other strategies to recognize people, such as identifying them by their height. Gal-Hee pitches in with the different directors’ hairstyles, and eventually Min-Ik is even able to recognize them by their specific tics. Another example is the first stockholders’ meeting where they team up to prevent Min-Ik’s dismissal. Everything goes so smoothly that it prompts Veronica Park to ask Gal-Hee, and I’m paraphrasing here, “Did you write the script to this play?”
What I didn’t like:
The deceit lasting so long. Min-Ik doesn’t start as the best of bosses, we see that in the first episode, but that very same episode opens the door for him caring for Gal-Hee more than he’s willing to let on. The show does a good enough job of explaining his rather rude behaviour towards his secretaries and why he always fires them within a year, what makes the deceit all the more hurtful. However, the problem I have with Min-Ik not realizing Gal-Hee was pretending to be Veronica Park, is that this happens for 24 episodes! That means we only have 8 episodes left for him to feel betrayed about the whole thing yet also recover in time to start dating Gal-Hee. I don’t feel this was enough time to successfully explore their relationship.
How weak/bland every other story is. The attempt on Min-Ik’s life and the police’s investigation of it is handled abysmally, with the detectives only appearing from time to time to create what some writer thinks is drama. They’re so useless that the perpetrator actually has to turn himself in! I thought Dae-Joo was a bland character throughout, so I had zero interest in his relationship with Veronica Park. The same goes for Gal-Hee’s family. Even Min-Ik’s mother somehow pulls a 180 out of the blue. The only other plot thread that caught my eye was the possible embezzlement and that was wrapped up horribly, what leads me to...
No one facing the consequences of their actions. No matter how much the writers want to frame this secret organisation within T&T as Robin-Hood-like, the fact remains that they were stealing. Not only that, but they can be directly tied to the assault and attempted murder of Do Min-Ik, among other crimes. Sure, they’re all fired at some point, but they all get hired back thanks to Min-Ik. Nobody faces any jail time except for the guy directly responsible for Min-Ik’s accident who actually apologizes to him and turns himself in. The leader of this shadowy organisation comes out unscathed and has her machinations to see Dae-Joo become chairman of T&T rewarded when...
Dae-Joo becoming the chairman of T&T. What a payoff. The blandest and most uninterested character in the entire show becomes the chairman when the character we’ve been rooting for throughout, the only one who’s willing to put everything on the line to help the downtrodden secretaries, gets the short end of the stick. I guess it’s true when they say no good deed goes unpunished.
OTP: There is some chemistry there and I wish we had seen more of it, but sadly the (official) relationship between Gal-Hee and Min-Ik takes place a little too late.
Verdict: Usually, most of the kdramas I’ve watched and liked, to some extent, have some scenes that are imprinted on your mind (much like Gal-Hee’s face is imprinted on Min-Ik) and that you find yourself returning to from time to time. With this show, I honestly had to struggle to recall any such scenes, even with the aid of YouTube playlists. This is not helped by the fact that I can recall none of the music used, and that’s not a good sign. Memorable scenes and songs usually go together, as the next show in my list will prove. Ultimately, The Secret Life of my Secretary, while entertaining enough, didn’t live up to my expectations and, as such, it’s unlikely I’ll be rewatching it any time soon.

Angel’s Last Mission: Love (2019)
Shin Hye-Sun as Lee Yeon-Seo, and Kim Myung-Soo (Infinite L) as Kim Dan.
Release Date: May 22 - July 11, 2019
Episodes: 32
Available on: Viki
Summary: Kim Dan, a troublemaking angel with a kind heart, is 24 hours away from Heaven when he meets the beautiful, talented, yet cynical and arrogant, prima ballerina Lee Yeon-Seo. Recently blinded by an accident during a performance, Yeon-Seo somehow manages to spot Kim Dan, who should be invisible to any human. His curiosity sparked, he follows Yeon-Seo around and eventually, in a fit of impulsiveness, saves her life in a car accident. However, for having interfered and saved a human’s life, Kim Dan is fated to turn to dust... unless he’s willing to undertake one final task. His mission? He must help Yeon-Seo find true love, but will he be able to keep from falling in love himself? Obviously not. And, naturally, Yeon-Seo has some evil relatives who are out to get her, because it wouldn’t be a kdrama otherwise.
What I liked:
The songs. I can’t vouch for the entire OST for I haven’t listened to it all yet (Correction: I’ve now since listened to all of it and it really has a lot of good tracks), but there are at least a handful of songs that will stick with you like glue. I can’t say if I like the songs more because of the scenes in which they play, or if I like the scenes more because of the songs that are used, but I can say the songs play an important role in engraving these scenes into my mind. Songs like ‘Sweeter’, by Jess Penner, that play when we’re playfully exploring the relationship between Yeon-Seo and Kim Dan; or ‘Pray’, by KLANG, when some important relevation or dramatic scene is about to transpire; or ‘Oh My Angel’, by Chai, that plays during the more romantic moments; these songs have made it into my Spotify list and are a must-listen on a daily basis for now.
The humor. Beyond the interactions between Kim Dan and Yeon-Seo, which sometimes make for very humorous situations, my hat’s off to the characters of Archangel Hoo, Dan’s senior (played by Kim In-Kwon) and Chung Yu-Mi, Yeon-Seo’s butler (played by Woo Hee-Jin). The former has dozens of opportunities for humor as he’s able to take the form of any human and keeps surprising Kim Dan by keeping tabs on him. The latter is probably the closest thing Yeon-Seo has to a mother (or maybe an older sister), and can be playfully mischievous when she starts noticing our leads may have feelings for each other. There are two scenes that perfectly embody the show’s humor that I would be remiss if I didn’t direct you to. Be aware they contain spoilers.

The leads and their chemistry. You cannot make a kdrama work if the leads don’t have some sort of chemistry (well, I suppose you could but it would be a bit of an uphill battle) and Shin Hye-Sun and Kim Myung-Soo have that in spades. This shows not only during the more romantic scenes, what’s expected, but also during their fights, what’s even better (if that makes any sense). This isn’t the first time I’ve seen L acting, in fact, he played the character of Yoo Tan in the short kdrama One More Time, with actress Yoon So-Hee playing his love interest, Moon Da-In. He sold me on that show then, as did Yoon So-Hee, but I feel his acting’s improved in this, or maybe the script and length of the show allows him to flesh out his character more, showing us more sides of his personality as the show draws to its end. And it’s really amazing to see how effortlessly Shin Hye-Sun can don the skin of the strong, cold, and harsh Yeon-Seo in one scene, and then swap it for the playful, romantic, and vulnerable Yeon-Seo that Kim Dan falls in love with in the next. Just watch more of those KBS World TV clips if you don’t believe me. These two steal every scene they’re in, but I feel Shin Hye-Sun is really the standout here. (At the time of this posting, Shin Hye-Sun has won the Top Excellence Award (Female) in KBS’s 2019 Drama Awards for her role in this show, so congratulations to her on an award well deserved!)
What I didn’t like:
How the show meanders towards the end. I laid out the plot in the most succinct way possible, but it’s hardly that straightforward. Dan’s mission should, in theory, be over when Yeon-Seo learns to love again, but then the show would then be over a lot sooner than Episode 32. The writers know that so they move the goalpost, at some point revealing that Dan also had to learn to love for the mission to be truly over. Not only that, but they both had to be willing to sacrifice everything for their loved one in order for God to believe their love was sincere or something, what leads one to think they need to commit suicide and the other to think they need to commit murder. I don’t know, by this point the show’s either stretching things out to reach the 32-episode mark or they’re milking each scene for every ounce of drama they can get, probably both. This problem gets compounded by the fact that...
Some (other) things don’t make a whole lot of sense. To start with, the theology and consistency on this show is all over the place. The same God that apparently ordered a couple of angels to shoot someone, gangsta style, because an angel broke the rules and fell in love with a human, is moved by our lead couple’s Romeo-and-Juliet love story and by Yeon-Seo’s ballet performance. Oh, and by the way, shooting someone is not how unruly angels are dealt with, God can simply pull a Thanos and have them vanish into mist, so why did he decide to use a gun that one time? Because drama! God also decides that the best time to send Dan to Heaven is when Yeon-Seo is lying commatose in the hospital (what a dick), to which Dan says, “Fuck it, I’m staying here,” and God lets him return as an angel so he can help Yeon-Seo wake up, interfering once again and thereby ceasing to exist... except he’s still an angel an episode later! What the f*** is going on here?! Archangel Hoo broke the rules once and he got the Thanos treatment, so how come Kim Dan gets so many second chances?
Some characters are either superfluous or their arcs are unclear. As an example of the latter, there’s the character of Ji Kang-Woo (played by Lee Dong-Gun), Yeon-Seo’s ballet instructor and Kim Dan’s rival for Yeon Seo’s affection. It’s revealed early on that he’s an angel-turned-human after breaking the rules and falling in love with a human himself... whom the gangster angels promptly killed. It’s never explained why she had to die while Yeon-Seo and Kim Dan are allowed to stay together, but apparently Kang-Woo is satisfied that his pain was necessary so he could help them trick God or something. I’ve no idea. But the award for the most superfluous character has to go to Ni-Na’s secret ballet instructor who only appears when the script dictates and is not developed at all. I can’t even remember if she had a name! What was her point even?
OTP: Probably one of the best pairings of the year (says the guy who’s watched maybe 4-5 2019 shows out of who knows how many).
Verdict: This is a case of the pros outweighing the cons. There’s simply too much that works for me, so many scenes and songs that stayed with me thanks to the strong performances of our leads and some of the supporting cast. I was never unaware of its more glaring flaws, what prevents this show from reaching Goblin levels of quality, but I could easily find myself rewatching it from time to time.

Strong Woman Do Bong-Soon (2017)
From left to right: Park Bo-Young as Do Bong-Soon; Ji Soo as In Guk-Doo; and Park Hyung-Sik as Ahn Min-Hyuk.
Release Date: February 24 - April 15, 2017
Episodes: 16
Available on: Viki, Netflix
Summary: Do Bong-Soon has a secret: she is insanely strong, a superhuman ability that has been passed down to the women in her family for generations. She also aspires to create a video game with herself as the main character. When Ahn Min-Hyuk, the CEO of gaming company Ainsoft, chances by her as she’s beating up half a dozen thugs, he’s instantly mesmerized by both her beauty and strength. The recent target of anonymous threats, Min-Hyuk decides to hire Bong-Soon as a bodyguard (she ends up being more of a secretary) and she accepts with the promise of joining the planning department of Ainsoft once the culprit is caught. Meanwhile, detective In Guk-Doo, Bong-Soon’s secret crush and childhood friend, investigates a series of strange kidnappings and murders in Bong-Soon’s neighbourhood. When the culprit targets Bong-Soon’s best friend, Bong-Soon and Min-Hyuk find themselves involved in the hunt for the criminal.
What I liked:
Gangster Bong-Soon. Okay, maybe saying she’s a gangster is a bit too much, but after beating a bunch of school bullies into submission, they soon look up to her as their new boss, taking orders from her and even looking out for her so that her secret isn’t exposed. It’s pretty funny then that Bong-Soon has to save her crew from being harassed by the new neighbourhood bullies, acting the part of a gangster for a short while.
The need for training. I appreciate the fact that Min-Hyuk foresaw the need to help Bong-Soon have full control of her strength, although he also created routines to bolster up her endurance, not to mention some of the moves she learned could have come in handy when she was depowered (sadly, she doesn’t use them). And all of this training does indeed pay off, as we see Bong-Soon fight smartly and using only as much strength as is needed to get the job done, as opposed to her Episode 1 self who used way too much strength with hilarious results. You can witness the results of Min-Hyuk’s training in the fight with the “new bullies” I mentioned previously, as well as the one at the beginning of Episode 9. Beyond fighting, her training also had positive results in her everyday life, like now being able to hug people without worrying about choking them.
youtube
The leads and their chemistry. The chemistry of these two is off the charts (it’s over 9000!!!). Everything about Park Bo-Young as Do Bong-Soon screams cute, from her short height to the way she talks, and even her glares of disapproval when Min-Hyuk does something he shouldn’t have. She’s also confident when she needs to, but not afraid to show vulnerability around the people she loves. I could shower similar praise on Park Hyung-Sik as Ahn Min-Hyuk, especially where the vulnerability department is concerned. Male leads tend to be more stoic (like In Guk-Doo), so it was quite refreshing to see how devastated Min-Hyuk was when he learned the identity of the one threatening him, or how crazy-in-love he is around Bong-Soon (she’s his kryptonite). Min-Hyuk is never afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve and it shows in every single scene. These two can just stare at each other in silence and convey more emotion than any spoken word.
The humor. I’m not talking about the dumb hospital scenes that feature humor more similar to what you’d find in a crappy Hollywood “comedy” (peeing jokes, really?), but things like Hyung-Sik’s ad-libbing throughout the show (he’s having a blast), or the more funny interactions between Min-Hyuk and Bong-Soon, even the ever-changing Romeo and Juliet scenes as Bong-Soon’s feelings for the different characters evolve.
What I didn’t like:
The sudden disappearance of Min-Hyuk’s family. Initially, the show has two distinct storylines: the string of kidnappings/murders, on the one hand; and the threats to Min-Hyuk, likely related to the question of who in his family will become the new Chairman of Ohsung Group. As expected, Min-Hyuk has several brothers who are a bit jealous of his success with Ainsoft and intuit their father will name him the Chairman, so it makes sense one of them is behind the threats. Once the storyline is resolved however, Min-Hyuk’s family is completely out of the picture, even during his marriage, what I find extremely odd.
The randomness of the depowering rule. Very early on the show explains that, while the women of the Bong-Soon family are blessed with superhuman strength from birth, they can easily lose this ability should they try to use it for less than honorable pursuits. It can be something as simple, and apparently harmless, as using this strength to become an Olympic weightlifting champion, as Bong-Soon’s mother soon found out, but it’s usually tied to using this ability to hurt innocent people. Naturally, once this rule was made known, it was only a matter of time before Bong-Soon would lose her powers as well, and this did indeed happen towards the end of the show. The problem I have with it is two-fold: its execution and its consistency. Bong-Soon doesn’t purposefully hurt an innocent man, she’s tricked into doing so by the villain. One could argue that whatever higher power granted this ability can’t tell the difference, except that argument falls apart entirely when you realize Bong-Soon has already purposefully used her power to hurt innocent people, like that one time she crushed Min-Hyuk’s foot to keep him silent (among multiple examples). That this event is played for laughs should have no bearing on the outcome. Furthermore, we later see Bong-Soon pleading for her strength to return so she can save Min-Hyuk, so it would appear that whatever higher power was listening is intelligent. At the end of the day, we all know this happened because the writers didn’t want to limit the fun possibilities of Bong-Soon abusing her power a little bit, saving it for the right moment to amp the drama. So, in reality, I was aware of it, and decided to roll with it.
OTP: Cuteness overload.
Verdict: This is one of the strongest shows in this list (no pun intended), more so given how much it’s able to pull off in 16 episodes as opposed to other shows’ 32, which is why I’m more lenient in terms of its writing. This is simply a good, fun, show, easily rewatchable thanks to the cute OTP. While its soundtrack may not be on par overall with the one from Angel’s Last Mission: Love, it still features some solid, memorable, songs (’Heartbeat’ by SURAN being the most obvious, but also ‘Double Trouble Couple’ by MAMAMOO, or ‘Super Power Girl’ by Every Single Day), not to mention a highly effective and comedic use of sound effects. Definitely one of my favourite shows.

1. What previews did you see at the last movie you saw in theaters? I don’t even remember dude. I do remember the last movie I saw in the cinema was Knives Out, but we were too late to see the previews and arrived exactly when the movie started. The movie I saw before that wasssssss Portrait of a Lady on Fire, but that was so long ago I definitely don’t remember the previews that showed beforehand – or if there were any, at all. 2. Have you ever washed your hair with mayonnaise? Ok I love mayonnaise, but that shit goes in my mouth and not anywhere else in my body lmao. 3. How many things are you a fan of on Facebook? I stupidly liked so many pages when I was 14 and new to Facebook...it must be in the hundreds. I think I still like most of them, but I’m just too lazy to unlike each of them. 4. Do you have more friends on Myspace or Facebook? Facebook is a sure winner here because I don’t even have a Myspace.
5. What generation iPod do you have? I don’t know...it’s an iPod from 2008, though. The really thin one that comes with games, and the screen is already colored.
6. What celebrities share your birthday? James McAvoy and Queen Elizabeth II are the biggest names I think. I Googled to confirm anyway and it turns out I share a birthday with Iggy Pop too. Pretty diverse group lmao. 7. What's your first and last name spelled backwards? Nybor, and that’s all you’re getting now. 8. What song is playing at the moment? No song, just two electric fans whirring loudly here in the first floor, and my sister watching a playthrough of some game she’s into on YouTube. 9. Do you clench your teeth when you're angry? Ugh no. I hate the feeling/texture/sound of grinding my teeth. I find it a little disturbing and I wince when I hear someone doing it in their sleep :/ 10. Have you ever been to a movie that sold out? Yeah, Killing of A Sacred Deer was surprisingly sold out when we watched it. Then again we were in the part of the city where people are more likely to watch films like that, so maybe it’s not that surprising after all. Other movies I remember being sold out was the entire Twilight Saga HAHAHA. I went to 4/5 midnight screenings and the cinema was packed every time.
11. Have you ever been to a midnight movie? ^ Just mentioned it. 12. It's 2010; are you gonna say oh-ten, twenty ten, or two thousand ten? I always say twenty-ten. 13. How many of your classes change next quarter? Next semester? I graduate next semester...hopefully. This virus is really ruining my life plans for 2020, especially as a graduating student who was expecting to graduate by June and get a job by like, September. 14. Do you believe in the paranormal? Only ghosts. 15. How old are the shoes you're wearing? I’m barefoot at the moment. I haven’t been outside in a WHILE, so I haven’t had to wear shoes in a while as well. 16. What's your state's weather usually like this time of year? The Philippines is a relatively tiny country so our weather from the northernmost to southernmost tips are uniform. That being said, March to June is our summer season so the *country’s weather is very humid and excruciatingly hot for now. Temperature usually plays around 34-37C, but the heat index can reach 42C. 17. Do you get those leg cramps in the middle of the night? I used to get them quite often as a kid - it would wake me up at 4 AM and I’d usually be crying by the end; I couldn’t scream because I never wanted to wake everyone up, so I’d just cry until it was over. 18. What movie last made you too scared to go to sleep? Midsommar didn’t make me too scared to sleep, but for a short time it made me terrified of flowers and the color white. 19. Do you have a Twitter account? Sure. 20. Did Obama deserve the Nobel Peace Prize he was awarded? Oh he won it? That’s pretty cool. I dunno enough about his presidency other than he seems to be ~hipper than all the other US presidents and is generally more well-loved, but I don’t want to make a stand so hastily. 21. Is your cell phone a qwerty (full keyboard) or no? Yeah, touchscreen qwerty. 22. What was the last website you logged onto (besides the one you're on)? WWE Network!!! Just today they announced that they were gonna give free access to the Network, which means thousands of hours’ worth of pay-per-views, shows, and documentaries. I made a WWE account just for it and I’ve already downed two documentaries this morning. 23. What's your home page? It’s a Google Chrome extension called Momentum. I’m too lazy to describe the features so I’ll just show you what it looks like when I open Chrome/a new tab.
24. Put a line from the song you're listening to right now: I’m not listening to a song rn but I do have everything i wanted by Billie Eilish stuck in my head for a few minutes now. A lyric goes: I had a dream / I got everything I wanted / Not what you’d think / And if I’m being honest, it might’ve been a nightmare / To anyone who might care.
25. Music artists you listen to: Are they a little or a lot older than you? They’re typically close to my age, like maybe 4-10 years older than me. The oldest artist I listen to is probably Beyoncé? 26. What always has to be in the refrigerator? For us, eggs. 27. What was your favorite movie of 2009? The Proposal. 28. What do you want for Christmas? That’s sort of a long way from now, dude. By that time I’d have grown a bit and will probably ask for a vacuum cleaner lmaaaaao. 29. If you could go to three places in the world right now: UPTC, Feliz, and a Starbucks. I just want to be out of my actual village – I don’t even want to go anywhere far after this. 30. How many days until your birthday? I was too lazy to do math but Google says it’s 28 days away. 31. Who are you crushing on right now? (Famous or not, it's your call.) Gabie, Kristen Stewart, and Lee Joo Youngggggg. 32. Do you squish bugs or put them in a glass and let them outside? I squish them especially if they’re being annoying, soz. 33. Do you have split ends? I recently got my hair done, so no.
34. Isn't it ridiculous that movie theaters sell hot dogs and nachos? It is pretty stupid considering they’re messy food and you’ll have to eat them in a really dark room. Where I’m from they allow any kind of food in the theatres, so we aren’t restricted to hotdogs and nachos. My go-to food is Potato Corner french fries, since they’re easy to pick up and would never have a strong smell, or make a noise or a mess. 35. What school subject do you absolutely fail at? I don’t think I ever got past an 85 in chemistry in high school. 36. When you're on a laptop, do you hook up a mouse or use the touchpad? I have a touchpad. I’ve never owned a mouse. 37. When's the next day(s) off you'll get at school? Literally right now until April 14th. It’s a lockdown, dude. 38. If you're learning a language, what year are you in? I’m not. My curriculum doesn’t require me to take language electives. I did take Spanish and Korean in Duolingo in the past out of boredom/curiosity, though. I lasted a few levels into Spanish because of its similarities with Filipino, but they have like a million verb tenses and that’s when it got too much for me. Korean was pretty difficult right from the start. 39. Do you think you're done growing or will you grow a couple more inches? Nah, this is it I think. 40. What's your mom's mom's name? Agnes. 41. Do you replace "and" with an ampersand (&)? No, it looks so informal to me. 42. What do you usually get at school for lunch? I don’t have a usual lunch; it depends on what we have at home, because I typically just bring food from home to school. 43. Have you ever encountered a creepy neighbor? I don’t think so. If I did, my brain probably blocked the memory already. 44. How many texts can your phone's inbox hold before it's too full? As far as I know it doesn’t have a limit and just depends on my phone’s overall capacity. 45. Do you like the foam soap or the liquidy soap? I use a liquidy one, so I’ll go with that. 46. Do you like the automatic sinks or the ones with hot and cold handles? Lmao, first of all our country’s not even rich enough for this question. We just have a basic sink. We get whatever temperature is available and we need to turn a knob to have the water running. 47. What day did/does your birthday fall on this year? It’ll fall on a Tuesday, which suckssss because it’s a weekday and I have weekly Tuesday meetings for this semester. It’s also the first week out of the coronavirus lockdown, and I doubt people will even be paying attention to birthdays by then. 48. Do you tend to lean towards bright colors or more subtle colors? Subtle ones. 49. Do you use British spelling even though you're not British? No. 50. Name the farthest/weirdest/most unique place you've ever been: Farthest: Bali, Indonesia Weirdest: There was this park in Palawan that just didn’t fit with the city’s atmosphere at all lmao. Let me look it up... Baker’s Hill. It had tons of vibrantly-colored figurines, decorations peppered with cheesy pick-up lines, and Valentine’s decor (hearts, streamers, etc) spread all over the place. I couldn’t understand what it was supposed to be and it was a surreal experience overall lol. Most unique: Sagada. It didn’t feel like I was in the Philippines for the 3 days I was there.

Both the lovely @rayadraws and the handsome @hinotorisan tagged me for this days ago, and my lazy ass is finally getting around to it, so here we go~♥
1: Are you named after someone? I’ve told this story before, about the nonbinary teddy bear I WAS going to be named after, right? So you have that, that’s where Tavia comes from, and the name I chose to adopt again because I see it as unisex and I love it. My dead name is Krystal, which I shortened to Krys and adopted as a middle name, and that was the name my parents chose literally at the last second for NO REASON. My siblings all have significance to their names, and I got a changed name at the last second, go me. 2: When was the last time you cried? Two days ago, I do believe, but it was only a little bit and because I got emotional over a Hobbit fanfic where Fundin had adopted Bilbo as a youngin’ and HE got emotional over Bilbo’s wedding. DAD FEELS MAKE ME EMOTIONAL OKAY. 3: Do you like your handwriting? I tend to write quickly and messily so no, I don’t really like it. I take care to write slowly if I write a card or a letter to someone, so I like it a bit more then, but overall I don’t like my handwriting. 4: What is your favorite lunch meat? Turkey I suppose. 5: Do you have kids? Two cats, but two more cats my roommates have, equals four children as far as I’m concerned. 6: If you were another person, would you be friends with you? ...Maybe? I dunno. People seem to either love me or fear me so who the fuck knows? 7: Do you use sarcasm? Better question would be do I ever NOT use sarcasm, and the answer is no. 8: Do you still have your tonsils? Yes. I mean, unless some hinky shit went down when I was unconscious ever in my life, I should still have them yes. 9: Would you bungee jump? Maybe. I fear heights, but I’m also suicidal, apparently, because I get up on high shit all the time and push that fear, so probably. 10: What is your favorite kind of cereal? Honey nut chereos or rice crispies. 11: Do you untie your shoes when you take them off? I have three pairs of shoes. One pair is boots, which zip, another is a slip on pair of black shoes I wear to work, and the other are my white sneakers that are my ‘I’m chilling but I have style’ shoes that I do indeed have to untie if I ever want to take them off. 12: Do you think you’re a strong person? ...You’d have to define when you mean by strength, because in some areas I’m strong, like sticking to my sense of self (At least these days—had to learn how to be ME the hard way), but in a LOT OF OTHER WAYS I’m super weak. 13: What is your favorite ice cream? Ever, ever? First of all, gelato is my jam, or frozen yogurt, and it’s a toss up between dark chocolate and strawberry. 14: What is the first thing you notice about people? If whe’re talking about irl, I guess one of the first things that catches my atention is voices. I’m all for nice voices. 15: What is the least favorite physical thing you like about yourself? Oh boy. You ask a pre-T FTM dude this question, you’re gonna get a complicated answer. Probably my wide-af-hips and thick thighs. They make passing as male INCREDIBLE hard. But so does my shitty feminine voice, so there’s that too. But I also hate my gut that sticks with me no matter how many crunches I do, or reps of planking I perform. Fucking hate my body. 16: What color pants and shoes are you wearing now? Black and black—at work so I don’t have much of a choice here. But actually all my pants are black, mainly because it’s slimming and reduces the appearance of my hips and legs, but also because I’m still emo as fuck inside, we all know it, so why hide it? 17: What are you listening to right now? The heater? No music playing right now. 18: If you were a crayon, what color would you be? Probably the black one, because it’s my favorite. 19: Favorite smell? Okay, this is going to sound weird, but newborn puppy smell? Like, once they’re cleaned up and moving around/interacting for the first time, they have this smell about them that’s so pleasant~♥ My mom bred border collies when I was a kid so I helped with a lot of puppy births and raising them, so yeah, that’s a nostalgic smell for me. Also thick plastic has a certain smell to it that I like, which is another weird one—I’m talking plastic tents are made out of, or inflatable chairs, that sort of plastic. OH, and rain on anything smells great. 20: Who was the last person you spoke to on the phone? My dad. When adulting doesn’t go the way you expect it, you call your dad. 21: Favorite sport to watch? Sports anime. 22: Hair color? Brunet 23: Eye color? Hazel that looks pretty green more often than not. 24: Do you wear contacts? Only for cosplay. 25: Favorite food to eat? Curry. 26: Scary movies or comedy? Scary~♥ 27: Last movie you watched? Sadako vs. Kayako (finally, it’s only taken a year for someone to sub it! But yeah, proving my point here, I love scary movies. Even the shitty, campy ones.) 28: What color of shirt are you wearing? Black, grey and white plaid. 29: Summer or winter? Winter 30: Hugs or kisses? Hugs~♥ Kisses on the cheek, or chaste kisses are okay too, but hugs are my jam. 31: What book are you currently reading? The Divine Comedy and the book @petrichorvus sent me~♥ Also just a shit ton of fanfiction. 32: Who do you miss right now? The significant other that’s not in my life. I don’t know who you are or where you are, but I miss you. (weird, right? God I’m a fucking sap. How do you miss someone who doesn’t exist?) 33: What is on your mouse pad? Kobato. 34: What is the last TV program you watched? Introverted Boss (I love my Korean dramas. This one, in particular, is interesting because the main character has severe social anxiety, perhaps even on the autism spectrum, and one story had a transgender woman that was handled pretty respectfully. Something I didn’t expect of a Korean drama!) 35: What is the best sound? Thunderstorms. 36: Rolling stones or The Beatles? Neither! 37: What is the furthest you have ever travelled? Japan. 38: Do you have a special talent? Uuuuuh...I’m more of a “Jack of all trades, master of none” type of person, but I suppse if I have a talent, it’s carrying a fuck ton of shit inside from the car, after a grocery trip, and reducing it to the least amount of trips as possible. 39: Where were you born? Japan.
I tag: @bellicosebelle @lovable-yuuri @one-trash-man @paperficwriter @memento-mori-twilight @majestically-fangirling and really anyone who wants to do it. No pressure~!
#about me#Tav babbles#thank you for tagging me!#Sorry it took so long#I say to myself#Oh I'll do it after work#and I wind up playing Overwatch instead#pffft

01/20/18
I woke up bright and early because I thought we were going hiking. Due to my friend getting super sick from drinking last night we ended up not doing that. So instead I went to Eggslut. It was convenient because Eggslut was just one hotel down from where I was staying. It was also convenient because the line was freaking short compared to each and every time I visit LA and I would always see this long ass line in Grand Central Market. It was a messy sandwich but amazingly good nonetheless. I talked to my friends for a little bit before we ended up going to TopGolf. I’ve never golfed before, mini golfing doesn’t count. I remember suggesting mini golfing whenever my friends want to hang out, a good majority of them don’t like to do that. It’s taken me off-guard but I guess different strokes for different folks. I guess it can get annoying when sometimes my friends would just not want to do anything I suggested. Once I asked if they wanted to grab korean fried chicken, and my friend even said “yo, this might be bougie of me but I don’t like eating things with my hands that’ll get messy”. I understood but at the same time god damn dude. Anyways, golf was awesome. It was funny when I wouldn’t be able to hit the ball, but when I do hit it, boom it’s over.
I also went to the firing range for the first time. It was scary for me at first, watching my friends shoot guns, hearing the gun shots, some gun shots were louder than others. I guess that’s what being in a battlefield feels like. I only wanted to shoot a pistol, everyone else shot 3 different guns. I was really surprised at how I handled shooting. I wasn’t shaking or anything, but it caught me off-guard with the small recoil and the bullets flying on my face.
The next few hours we all had free time to do what we want. Everyone went to sleep except for me. My initial plan was to just hit up a brewery. Oh yeah, backstory from last night, we went to a dispensary. I bought a snickerdoodle edible. When I was eating in my hotel suite I didn’t feel anything. I was just simply planning what to do, looking up addresses. Before I left I figured I should eat the last half of the cookie so I could throw all the trash downstairs. It didn’t hit me until I took a LYFT to Downtown Las Vegas. It was the slowest ride ever. I felt the effects and it hit me really hard. Going to the brewery, there was a bit of a line. The thing is when I eat an edible I realize how self-conscious and paranoid I get. My senses are all out of whack and it feels like everyone is watching me. My hearing feels like a white noise and it’s not until I sit down I’ll be somewhat okay. That was my tripped out/fear/scared phase of my high. The bartender was really attractive. She kept calling me “hun” or “sweetie” and all of those cute names that’s not “bae” or “boothang”. I bought a pint glass to add to my collection. I decided to look around because it’s not everyday that I’m here. Some people tried to talk to me about human trafficking and because I was high I was just really uncomfortable talking to someone and I just kept saying “Sorry I’m not interested”. Whilst walking so faded, when I crossed the street I looked up at the sky and boom, White Castles. That’s when the happiness phase of my high kicked in. I remember the movie Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, the first thing they did was get high and when they were trying to figure out what to eat the White Castle commercial turned on. So I was just really happy living the movie. I got so happy that I bought a hat. When I took a LYFT back I was just really digging the Las Vegas sunset. Coming back to my hotel I thought that taking a shower would help me wear off the high. It only made things worse. I thought because I ate an edible my eyes won’t get red like when I would smoke a bong. I guess with edibles it’s really delayed and out of nowhere my eyes get super red. I was feeling the crashing phase, when everything I feel in my body is like a wheezing teapot. The groomsmen noticed but they were just so amazed at how much energy I had and that I even went out and did stuff while everyone else took a nap. I guess it’s because everyone is in their early 30′s where I’m still 27.
We had a steak dinner at Delmonico’s. My crashing phase turned into the munchies phase. That phase is probably the best thing ever because that’s the last phase as I was not high anymore after that. I was the quietest one in the group so it was interesting hearing their stories. We also got into this conversation about Aziz Ansari. I read an article about how he went on a date with this girl and it was a bad date because he kept forcing her to have to sex him. I guess for me, my opinion on that is both were just at fault. It was messed up of him to keep forcing her to do stuff on him and just the way he treated her like shit, but at the same time, the girl sucked his cock and didn’t leave. It sucks hearing all of this, and it also sucks hearing the debates of all of this. At the end of the day, we can only learn from our encounters and experiences. Some encounters and experiences are more fucked up than others, but at the same time in the end it’s up to us to put power on their actions or just shrug it off and that’s the end of it. It’s easier said than done, because I know that I have my fair share of stuff that I haven’t let go, but it’ll be okay. We went back to the hotel and stated pregaming. I won $26.50 because I made a bet in the bookings for the champion to win the fight at UFC. Everything was a blur as we drank a ton of japanese whiskey. I remember going to Shake Shack again and trying the mushroom burger with the patty.
While others just tapped out and went back to the hotel, I opted out and went to the strip club. Long story short, it was expensive, fun, awkward, a trippy environment as always, and it only made me have stories to tell later. As I got back to my suite I used one of these bath bombs my friend got me and went to the tub. Toonami was on when I got back so it was cool watching Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell while laying in the tub. I forgot when I fell asleep but I woke up with Teen Titans on. It was a good day.

“See you laters” are the worst.
I’m not talking about the kind when you go on a trip or won’t being seeing someone close to you for a short time. I mean the kind when you have to say “see you later” to someone you only get to spend a short time with every few (a.k.a. SHIT TONS OF) months. People in long distance relationships will know what I’m talking about, in fact that’s exactly what I’m talking about.
I use the term “see you later” rather than “good-bye” because in my mind good-bye is forever, see you later is more promising in the future. I’m sure many of you have seen things stating the same thing, I like to take it to heart.
Being a young army wife, our relationship started out pretty much like in the movies (or like you hear about all the in the military community). We started seeing each other seriously just a few weeks before he went to basic in fall of 2015. We already knew we were going to get married at the ages of 17 and 19. That was the first see you later. He lived a town over and since he would have to go through my hometown on his way to MEPS we decided him and I would drive the first 10 minutes (to have some last alone time) and his mom would follow and pick him up there, I couldn’t go with because I had to work. The moment he got out of one car and into the next will forever be imprinted in my memory. I remember thinking how terribly I was going to miss him, I remember crying my eyes out and watching them drive away, never breaking eye contact until they were out of sight. I remember thinking “the next 2 months can’t go by fast enough”, since he would be in basic through Christmas he was able to come home for a couple weeks. It’s funny now how 2 months really doesn’t seem as long as it did then. 8 weeks. 56 days. I remember thinking about how I knew I was going to have to get used to this in the future, and dear God was I right.
The second see you later was when he came home for Christmas during basic. I was so happy to see him and spend every waking moment with him, we had the time of our lives, we always do. At this point in time we were dead set on getting married after he was out of AIT but we hadn’t announced it yet so his mom wasn’t so happy that we were spending every night together, I was still just 17 and our families like to be “morally correct” like that. But of course we still spent the night together the entire time he was home and when he had to go back he was not taking that 3 hour drive to the airport without me by his side - which his mom wasn’t too happy about that either, so you can imagine how awkward the ride home was. I was able to help myself from crying at the airport when we kissed “see you later”, I think the awkwardness of the circumstance helped me from being overwhelmed at the time being. I thought “this won’t be so hard we’ve done it before and everything was fine, we can do it for another 2 months and then we will be able to talk to each other rather than writing letters! This is cake!”. It was far from that, in fact it was harder. He would tell me how much he missed home, even more than when he first went to basic, and all I wanted to do was give him a hug. It sucked.
My mother-in-law and I got to go see him graduate basics, that was a fun trip! We only got to see him for 2 days, so I don’t really count that as a “see you later”. I say that because I didn’t have the heart crushing feeling I had the other two times before. It’s like when you go on a vacation on the other side of the world, you have jet lag. It takes a few days to feel it, and then a week or two to get used to it. I was so ecstatic to see him, and since it was for such a short time it was like a really long dream. We didn’t have time for normalcy to set in. We spent those two days just staring at each other and smiling and just enjoying each other’s presence. Plus, he was going to AIT! He was finally going to have the luxury of having his cell-phone! I was more excited about that than sad about the fact we would have to go another 3 months states away form eachother.
Not too long after getting home from that is when I learned to make time go by literally as fast as I can. It was my senior year of high school (2nd semester) but I graduated a semester early so I could work and just do what ever I want, and that’s exactly what I did. I worked and took classes through the college to pass my time. I got a second job at the high school cafeteria (I thought it was pretty fun serving my classmates...bitches) for a few months, and I just tried as hard as possible to be doing something every waking moment. During this time apart we announce we were engaged! We just used Facebook, and then I decided I should probably tell my parents before they hear it from someone else. It was a fun time.
In April of that year (2016) my family went on a trip to San Fran to see one of my cousins get married. Just a week after I was going to go see my husband (at the time fiance) graduate AIT! But this time I went by myself. It was just a short trip, I was hoping to spend two days like we did last time, but instead I only got the one day - his graduation day. But I don’t regret going. It was a memory I’ll never forget and I am so proud to say I was there for my husband. So like the time I saw him before, we didn’t have time for normalcy to set in, so I felt like I was in a dream.... a really really amazing dream...
After I got back home I continued doing the same things I was doing before my trips up until May. My husband was still at Fort Lee where he went to AIT, even though he had graduated already it wasn’t time for him to leave because of orders. In May I still walked across the stage with my graduating class like normal, I was really hoping he would be able to make in for that! But he ‘still wasn’t able to leave’. Well, I had a feeling That he was going to surprise me and sure thing he did! This was another moment in my life that I will forever remember. We were all walking out of the gymn while the procession (I think thats what it’s called) was playing and as soon as I got through the door and was about to turn down the hall I saw my amazing man standing right there! Best. Moment. Ever. He was home for 2 weeks and in that two weeks we got married and just had shit loads of fun. As always.
But the thing that sucked about it - we would have to say “see you later” again. A-FUCKING-GAIN. He found out when he was in AIT that he was getting stationed in South Korea. Originally we were like “damn that sucks because we can’t be together for a whole fucking year still” then we were like “oh wait we can probably be together families move here all the time” then we were like “fuck he got put on a small base with no housing in a random Korean city, maybe we can get an apartment off base and be together”, well by the time we kinda got things figured out it had been like 4 months so we just thought “fuck it”. This “see you later” was one of the worst ones. Probably because it was more recent and honestly they just keep getting worse. Can you tell I’m getting angry now? Because he was home this time for 2 weeks like in basic, but we had been together much longer now and we were married now! AND I WAS ALREADY SO TIRED OF NOT BEING WITH HIM. We thought after AIT we would finally be able to BE together! It sucked. Like always. Normalcy set in when he was home for that 2 weeks, and honestly it makes saying “see you later” even more difficult.
By this time, after he got to Korea, I was still trying to make time go by as fast as possible. I loaded up on classes, was no longer working at the highschool so I tried finding another second job - not with much luck as they didn’t fit well with my schedule. I found one but only stayed there for 2 weeks, working as a dairy department stocker at a grocery store. Fucking hated it. I pretty much hated everything by this point in time. Didn’t know when I would see my husband next, unless it would be in a year, then I knew, but that fact made me even more sad.
Luckily he was able to come home about 4 months (give or take) of him being in Korea. He came back for one of his cousin’s wedding. It was amazing having him home again. Of course I couldn’t help but think about how he was going to leave in 2 weeks from then. Then 1 week. Then 4 days. Then tomorrow. Then I’m driving home by myself after dropping him off at the airport. It was a depressing image in my mind and it was depressing when it actually happened. I tried not to think about it when he was home for those two weeks because I found myself being bitter and sad, and that was not the way I wanted to be when my husband was home for only 2 weeks every 3-4 months. I think this was the worst see you later out of all of them. In fact it is the last one so far. I was devastated. I didn’t want to go 7 months with out seeing my husband. That was just too much for me. I could do 4. But not 7.
Well, I decided I was going to visit him. I was terrified of going by myself so I found a friend to come with! We spent a few months planning it, I decided on February because that would be about halfway between the time he went back from leave and the time he would be done there. That way I wouldn’t have to go more than 4 months with out seeing my husband. It made me feel better. I continued working and doing classes, I even decided to get my own rental house while I was waiting for him to come back to the states! It didn’t last long. My roommates were pretty much the shittiest roommates ever with out actually ruining any of my stuff or being dicks. I partied a lot that 1 month I was there. And by party I mean get drunk and then get upset because I missed my husband and then go to bed. Fun. Times.
So I moved back in with my mom and it was almost time for my trip to see my husband! My friend and I took the train to Chicago (it was cheapest to fly out of O’hare.. like way fucking cheaper). We got to the airport and it turns out my friend couldn’t come with. He only had a card passport. Couldn’t use it. It was no good. Fuck. So I went by myself! Stayed a night in China because my connecting flight was the next day - terrifying. It was terrifying because I’m cheap and got the cheapest hotel and it was sketch. But I survived and made it to Korea! My husband met me at the airport and we had an amazing time! (Do you see the pattern here?). I couldn’t help myself from thinking about when we will have to say “see you later” again, but I didn’t let it interfere with enjoying being with my husband. I made the trip so I would be in Korea for about two weeks. The glorious but deadly two weeks: long enough to fully enjoy eachother and have the time of our lives, and also long enough for normalcy to set in. You know what is coming now. But the question is: Is it going to be as terrible as the other times, going weeks feeling lonely and sad and crying just trying to keep myself busy, or will I be able to go back to normal? Will this next 3 months of my husband being out of the states go by fast and will we REALLY FINALLY be able to be together after this long ass year?! - I know we will but it just feels like it is inevitable. But I know it’s real. I don’t to be sad and depressed like I usually am after saying “see you later” but I can never help it. And everytime before this seems like it got worse. Will this time be like that too? I think this to myself as I sit here in my hotel in South Korea waiting for my husband to get off work and come see me so we can have our last time together before I go to the airport tomorrow morning. I don’t want to leave him. I just want to live with him and be with him with out knowing when we have to say our “see you laters”. GOD
P.S. I don’t regret marrying the man I love who is in the military. And I am not mad at him nor the military, I am so so thankful. I just wanted to vent how I feel about missing him. And if you took this post to think I am angry at someone, no, I’m not, I’m just putting my feelings out there.
P.P.S. (or is it P.S.S.???) I also wonder every now and then what it would be like to actually have an army wife friend like me - since I haven’t really been acquainted with this life yet I just don’t know. Does anyone else feel like this? I feel stupid about this but i guess that’s the good thing about not putting my identity out there.
Bye.
EDIT: Also I am very thankful that I was able to visit my husband where he was rather than him being on a true deployment. It’s gonna suck when that happens.
Ok. Bye for good.

On our way Chapter #3
Avni stared at the picture on Meghna’s phone and looked at her roommate incredulously. She glanced at her for a second before flicking her on the forehead, “Did you seriously put up an act to try and fool me into believing this?” “I'm not lying! Look at the picture! Our elevator is in the background!” Avni looked at the picture once more and flicked Meghna on the forehead again. “Seriously? Photoshop?” “Wha- no-” Meghna started but Avni’s look of distaste silenced her. “You have to believe me! I'm not lying-” “Oh God, stop.” Of course Avni would think she was lying. Why would kpop stars be in India? Meghna stood up and grabbed Avni’s hand before dragging her out of the room and towards the front door. Avni’s protests fell on deaf ears. Meghna stared through the peep hole and saw Yoongi standing near the door, tapping his foot. Meghna gasped and took a step back before pushing Avni towards the door. Avni stared through the hole wearily and was about to turn away when her body went rigid. She stared through the hole, clenching her fist. She could see Taehyung and Yoongi outside. Taehyung shut the door and he turned to face Yoongi, who's back was towards the girls’ front door. She had a clear view of his face. Avni jumped back and tried to unlock the door but Meghna squeaked and grabbed her hand and had to wrestle her away, with her other hand clamped over Avni’s mouth to keep her from screeching. “Now do you believe me?” Avni nodded weakly. They rushed back to the peep hole to find the corridor outside empty. Avni grabbed her keys and Meghna smoothed her hair into a more presentable ‘do. They rushed out of their house and down the stairs as fast as their legs could carry them. Meghna stopped suddenly right before they could descend to the ground floor and Avni crashed into her. “What the fuck?” “We shouldn't be hasty. Let's pretend we don't know them.” “Why the fuck not?” “I don't think having two fans as neighbors will keep them here.” Avni sighed, “Good thinking.” They climbed down slowly after that, their eyes darting around to take in a 180 degree view of everything around them. They spotted the two boys walking out of the lobby towards where the rest of the boys stood. Scratch that, Namjoon and Jimin were missing. The two girls stifled squeals of delight and hid behind a pillar and watched them. Years of being obsessed with kpop and watching tons of kdramas had helped them learn Korean. From their position, they could just make out the boys’ conversation. “Aish, this suck so much,” Taehyung said, running a hand through his dark hair. Suga’s monotonous voice replied, “I wanted to sleep. Why did they have to have the house cleaned now?” The rest mumbled in agreement. Hoseok said, “There's supposed to be a park around here somewhere, right? Let's head over there.” The reply that came next made both the girls jump. “Where the fuck is it? I'm fucking tired.” It was Seokjin. Yoongi was often known to swear and the rest had at least done it enough times on camera for the fans to be used to it. But Seokjin? Who would've thought our pink princess was such a potty mouth? The boys began to walk away and the girls followed, hiding behind whatever they could and staying as close to them as their circumstances allowed. The park was close, it was actually right down the road and the boys found it after a two minute walk. They walked in and immediately headed over to the trimmed grass. Yoongi collapsed before anyone could stop him, this time on purpose. Hoseok was clicking pictures of all the pretty flowers and the rest were sitting on the grass, immersing themselves in conversation. It was like watching a bangtan bomb happening right in front of them, minus the boys talking to a camera. The two girls stared at each other for a second before their best friend telepathy made them nod in understanding. They looped their arms together at the elbow and began to walk around the park on the jogging track. They were far away from the boys and were shaking in excitement, trying to keep themselves from running. They were slowly nearing the boys, intently watching them from the corners of their eyes. Avni decided to start talking in their native language, telugu, to prevent themselves from seeming too suspicious. “Oh my God, they look beautiful!” “Why are you talking?” “To not seem questionable.” “Good point. Oh Lord look at Jeongguk…” “Don't say their names! Call him… biscuit.” “...what?” “It's kinda synonymous with his nickname. I couldn't think of anything better.” Jeongguk was lounging in the sun, lying in Taehyung's lap while Taehyung chatted with Hoseok. Finally, the girls reached them and passed by them. Their conversation was beginning to falter and they had to force themselves to not stare at them. After about three more rounds and gushing about the boys in Telugu, they forced themselves to leave the park and head back home. Meghna said, “I cannot believe this! Is this a dream?” “If it is, it's got to be the best one I've ever had.” “Let's head- Oh fuck, it's Namjoon and Jimin…” “WHERE.” “Right there near our apartment!” Avni followed her gaze and stared at the two boys who seemed to be arguing about something. The girls tried to blend in and not be noticed but they failed, Namjoon had noticed them. He gazed at them for about two seconds before looking away. As though it was a movie, they passed by each other in slow motion. Avni was just about to grab Meghna’s hand and squeeze the shit out of it when Namjoon’s rich voice called out to them. “Excuse me?” Avni practically whipped around and Meghna had to subtly squeeze her arm to keep her from babbling. “Yes?” Jimin stared at them now and Avni found it hard to breathe. Namjoon was staring at Meghna, “You are our neighbor, right?” Meghna answered in a calm tone that surprised both the girls, “Yes. It's nice to meet you. This is my roommate, Avni.” Avni gave them a feeble wave and a weak smile, feeling her legs turning to jelly. The boys smiled back, flashing their pearly whites and nearly blinding the girls. “It's nice to meet you too. I'm Namjoon and this is Jimin. We're sorry for disturbing you, but could you direct us to the nearest convenience store?” If it hadn't been for who they were talking to and the circumstance they were in, Avni would have laughed at his extremely formal demeanour and the fact that they thought an introduction was necessary. “Sure, just walk along this road that way,” Avni pointed, “And t-take the second right. You'll find yourself in front of this store called Heritage.” Namjoon nodded and smiled, and both the the boys bowed. “Thank you.” Faster than the eye could follow, the girls had their backs bent and eyes on the ground. As soon as the two boys turned their backs on them, Avni and Meghna sprinted into the nearby bushes and jumped into them and started at the boys’ backs. Avni let out a loud squeal and Meghna had to physically restrain her from herself. Jimin turned around, obviously having heard her screech and his eyes scanned his surroundings before they walked away. Avni and Meghna stared at each other in silence for the next ten minutes before heading back home. -x- It wasn't a secret, Avni and Meghna were borderline fitness freaks. The next morning, they pulled on their jogging shorts and exercise attire, plugged in their headphones and slipped on their Fitbit watches before heading out for a jog. It was very early, just 6 AM, but Avni’s health depended on their daily exercise. She had polycystic ovarian syndrome, which was a very common disorder among women in its minor stages. Avni just had it worse than most. She always kept junk food to a minimum because she could gain weight in days and her period became more painful when she was heavier. Meghna decided to join Avni on her regime to keep her sane and happy and to obviously be the supportive best friend she was. The two jogged around the locality, opting not to go into the park today. Meghna glanced up during their third lap and spotted Namjoon staring at them from their flat’s balcony. She let out a squeak and murmured to Avni, “Look up.” Avni glanced up in the most obvious way possible and Namjoon seemed taken aback that he had been caught staring. He quickly composed himself and waved and the two girls smiled. Just as they were about to turn around a corner, Taehyung stepped into the balcony. He had obviously just woken up, his hair was a mess and his eyes were still adjusting to the light. His smooth golden skin practically shined and Avni could feel herself drooling at the sight. He sleepily ran a hand through his hair to sweep it off his face and in that moment Avni lost her balance and gracefully face planted into a pole. Before any of them could react, they heard a loud cackle, obviously directed at them. Meghna turned around and spotted two men, leering at them from a distance. They looked rowdy and dirty and Avni didn't want to get involved with them, so the girls continued to jog. Another round later, just as they reached the same spot, a hand grabbed Meghna and pulled her back, making her shriek. One of the men had his hand around her arm and he was grinning. Avni whipped around and glared. The second man approached her and tried to grab onto her. Above them, Namjoon and Taehyung had been watching them since the moment they had greeted each other. Taehyung gritted his teeth and glanced at Namjoon who nodded. They practically raced downstairs after screaming at Hoseok that they had work to do. But the scene that greeted them when they reached was far from their expectations. Owing to their daily Jiu-jitsu classes, Avni had her foot planted on one of the men’s chests and she was screaming at him in a language the boys’ couldn't understand. Meghna was throwing a rock at a form that was running away very rapidly, limping and groaning. The man under Avni whimpered and she took her foot off. “Nee lanti chattha vaala vallane ammayulu inti nunchi baytaki raaru. Ikkada malli kanipacharante police nee pilichi lopala uthikettu chesthanu. Po!” It's because of people like you that girls don't want to step out of their houses. If I see you here again I'll ensure you'll get thrown into jail and beaten up within an inch of your life. Get lost! The man stood up, almost falling over, and raced away, screaming profanities laced with apologies. Taehyung and Namjoon stared in awe. They had expected a situation like those in the many kdramas they had watched, where the boy would come and protect the girl and chase away the men who wanted to hurt her. Taehyung liked this version better. He stared at Avni, or as he called her in his head, the short cutie, and almost laughed at how fierce she looked. Meghna was clutching her arm, scowling. “It's going to bruise. That fucker had such a hard grip! I'll skin him if he ever tries to approach another girl again.” That's when they noticed the two boys staring at them from a distance. Taehyung flinched at the glare Avni threw at him, before her gaze softened. Namjoon spoke up, “Are you.. okay?” Avni was too riled up to feel shy. “We're fine.” “We… er… thought you might need our help and we raced downstairs when we saw those men trying to harm you.” Taehyung, who obviously couldn't understand the conversation, stared at them in bewilderment, slightly comprehending what was being said. “We're alright. We train in martial arts. It's as they say, better stay safe than sorry.” Namjoon looked impressed, “Absolutely.” The four stared at each other awkwardly before Taehyung spoke, “I'm Taehyung. It's nice to uh meet you.” Avni’s eyebrows shot up, his accent was almost American. His English had gotten better from his time in American Hustle Life. “Hi! Namjoon already knows us. I'm Avni and this is Meghna. We're your neighbors.” “Nice ta meet you.” “You too.”

Have you ever been served breakfast in bed? Yeah but not sweetly like how it’s made out to be. My parents just bring the food up my room since most of the time we can’t be bothered to eat at the table. I’d die at the effort if Gab served me breakfast in bed, especially knowing she can’t cook. What is the most challenging meal you have ever cooked? I haven’t gone beyond scrambled eggs and instant noodles. Even when we were required to cook dishes in high school, I never volunteered to be super involved in the kitchen. Are you one to approach others, or let them approach you first? Preferably I would be approached, but if it’s a desperate situation, I wouldn’t mind talking to poeple first. When was the last time you took painkillers? Months ago. Have you ever picked flowers out of someone else's garden without asking? No. I’d hate it if people did that to our backyard.
Who did you give them to, or did you keep them for yourself? What is your favorite thing to do as a little kid? Play outside and wait for the movie that Disney Channel was going to air for the evening. Are holidays as fun for you now as they were when you were younger? Definitely not. Everything feels lonelier as an adult. Do you find non-fiction to be boring? Quite the opposite. Fiction is boring for me, I would read anything non-fiction. Are you a punctual person? Or are you always late? Punctual. Lateness is my biggest pet peeve. Do you own a thesaurus? Do you actually use it? I have a thesaurus on my laptop, and use it mostly when I’m writing academic papers and run out of synonyms. What is the longest essay or research paper you have written? Probably within the 20-35 page range. The longest one coming for me is my thesis, definitely. I’ve read some of the alumni’s theses and all of them have over 160 pages. Terrifying. Do you ever write your own short stories? No. I can’t write fiction for the life of me. Have you ever won money by entering a contest/raffle? No. I remember winning some playing Bingo, though. Heh. Have you ever lost something very valuable? Yeah, I lost my first phone when I was 7, as well as my wallet and retainers. Have you ever lost something with a lot of sentimental value? Yes. I was fixing up my iCloud account one time since I had a new phone, when I accidentally deleted my entire camera roll from 2015-2017. I was shattered and cried about it for days. To me, photographs are memories just as powerful as the sense of smell. The fact that all those photos were gone in an instant meant I was going to slowly forget all the memories I made in those times, and i really didn’t want to face that reality. I lost photos from my senior year retreat, old conversations with Gabie, my trip to Sagada...so it sucked. Have you ever been close to drowning? Just one time when my cousin was pulling my leg from under water and was trying to drag me down. I didn’t get to inhale so I was powerless and panicked immediately. Have you ever had a panic attack? Yes, when I’m under pressure or lose something important. What stores do you go into when you go to mall? I never buy anything so I don’t make it a point to go through stores often. Gab and I will always stop by video game shops though, and those places that sell geeky stuff like telescopes and comic books and Pop figures. Do you ever stop to eat in the food court? If we’re on a tight budget, yes. Do you find it easy to relate to other people? Depends on what aspect. This is a broad question. Who is your favorite philosopher? I hate philosophy. What is your favorite song to sing? There are so many I could think of. Do you consciously try to be unique, or do you just be you? Consciously trying is automatic fakeness. I just do me and whatever people make it out to be is not my problem anymore. Do you worry about being judged by other people? Sometimes, but then it ultimately doesn’t matter since the only opinions that matter are my friends’. If someone doesn't like you, do you usually want to know the reason? Nope. When was the last time you told someone something really important? Yesterday? I was talking to my editor about the article I was assigned to write for our publication, and I guess that whole conversation was technically really important. Have you ever lost a large amount of money? No, the most I’ve lost was around 600 which isn’t really huge. That’s about $11. Have you ever tried to blame something you did on someone else? Hah yeah. I mostly did that as a child, though. Did that person get in trouble, or did the plan fail? No, my sister and I both always got in trouble together. What is the weirdest hairstyle you have ever had? Ear-length when I was 4. And it’s not really weird, but I hate it the most when my mom schedules to have my hair straightened. I’m turning 20 soon and I expect her to stop meddling with my own hair by this point. Describe the ugliest pair of shoes you own? I don’t have any ugly shoes but my white Keds are definitely a mess. They’ve been stepped on, gone through puddles, gathered dust, and been through everything that would make it go from white to gray. Are you ashamed to leave the house when not looking your best? No. If you are antisocial, WHY are you that way? I’m not, I just have bad anxiety and shyness. What is your favorite singer? Beyonce <3 If you could relive one day from last year, what day would it be? Why? Any day from high school. I miss it. What is something that you are afraid to fail at? Writing. What would happen if you did fail at it? I’d be devastated. Do you ever worry about your loved ones dying? It pops in my mind every now and then. What is the cutest thing a guy could do for a girl? Go away from her. Stuffed animals--immature, or should everyone have one? I don’t have a very strong opinion on stuffed animals. What do you like in your breakfast burritos? I’ve never had one of those :( Aaahhhh I’m so hungry. What restaurant would you choose to go to for breakfast? Rustic Mornings would be perfect. How much money do you think you cost your parents? Millions. Do you have good hand/eye coordination? I guess. I play table tennis, nothing can get more hand-eye than that LOL Can you do a flip on a trampoline? I probably could but I’m always just so scared of breaking my neck. I’m the klutziest person I know and the possibility of that happening to me is pretty high hahaha I don’t trust myself. Do you remember the last time you climbed a tree? I’ve never done that because any big tree in this country is probably filled with fire ants. Did you ever lie on your back and pick shapes out of clouds as a kid? No. I never did have a wild imagination. Do you watch any Japanese anime? I was never into it, no. Is there a foreign culture you are interested in learning more about? Indian, Japanese, and Korean. Do you know anyone who's reputation has recently been ruined? Nope. That’s a high school thing, everyone’s more decent in college lololol When did you first get a cellphone? I was 7. My first phone was a Nokia one with the green screen, it was awesome. Do you have your own laptop computer? Yes. Do you drive your own car, or your parents? Uh well it’s kind of my car, but my dad bought it so not mine haha. Say something inappropriate? No thank you. What were you doing before you started taking this survey? I took a bath. Describe the best summer you ever had? All my summers have been shit. Do you eat any meat other than turkey on Thanksgiving? Did you attend a pre-school? Yep, from when I was 4-6. Do you remember what it was like to learn to count to 100? No. I don’t even know how I learned to count at all. What is something you lost in the process of growing up? This didn’t apply to me. I had a trash childhood and was forced to grow up way earlier than all the other kids. Do you wear any wristbands? If so, what's on them? I don’t find them comfortable so no. What was the last picture you were in? Gab was taking photos of me last Tuesday. Did you have required reading material in high-school? We had tons of textbooks. Do you keep your room organized? Sure. Do you vacuum daily? No. How many board games do you own? Errr like 3-4. None of which I use ever. Own any books? Is this a real question? Recently checked any books out from the library? No. I don’t borrow library books because I have a terrible track record in returning them. Does your cat give you kitty kisses? I have a dog. What’s in your make-up bag? I don’t use makeup.
