Late Night Visitor

Summary: A mysterious stranger visits your balcony and accidentally leaves behind a priceless jewelry that they stole from a museum.   

Author’s Note: I’m pleased to share the next story for @bnhabookclub​ Hero Camp Bingo event. The prompt I used was “Crime AU” It took a while getting this done because of work stress and having slight writer’s block (plus I kept changing the story’s direction). But really, it was because of how stressed/tired I’ve been the past few weeks. So, really sorry if it took forever posting another story.

It’s also my first time writing for Hawks, so hopefully I did him justice! He was the first character that popped up when working with this prompt. Please enjoy!!

“Ah! Hot, hot!”

Well, isn’t this just great? Nothing like accidentally burning your tongue during dinner to remind yourself how impatient you are—damn hunger. One hand flails to cool down your mouth. Steam dances above the hearty bowl of curry rice, the sweet smell of caramelized onions greeting your nose with a soft kiss. Bless the local 7-11 markets for selling quick and easy meals.

You sit criss-cross applesauce on the fluffy gray rug and scroll through social media for the millionth time. It’s been a slow weekend as yesterday’s news is recycled for today’s news. A random show plays on the television, but you don’t pay attention to the white noise. All your focus is on the phone, yet you still reach for another bite from your meal. How the rug stays clean during dinner nights at home is a complete mystery.  

Sipping on your drink, you spare a glance at the balcony and do a double-take—a stranger is crouching outside. You choke, “Oh shit!”

Without thinking, you scurry behind the gray couch, not caring if the rug becomes messy. Your pounding heart is like a concert bass drum which echoes around the small apartment. The sound drowns out the show’s mindlessly chatter. Frightened eyes peek around the corner, and you whip back in full regret.

The person is still outside. Their back is facing toward the balcony door, and they are wearing a form-fitting black hoodie. Hands search for your phone, but they come up empty. Panic finally settles in when you realize it’s on the coffee table. Great, you moan as your head softly hits against the furniture—is the door even locked?

You’re faced with a dilemma: Do you stay out of sight until the stranger leaves or risk being seen while getting help? After much deliberation, you swallow a hard pill and growl at the ceiling, “If I’m doing this, I better not die!”

You’re like a soldier crawling through the mud with a drill sergeant yelling down your neck. You snatch the phone off the table, but make the mistake of looking up at the sliding door. Everything comes to a screeching halt as curious gold eyes stare into your timid ones. The mysterious visitor becomes more intimidating thanks to the balaclava mask—it covers the lower half of their face.

The intense staring contest last for an eternity. You nearly rip off the loose strands on your rug when the stranger approaches closer; they stop when you back away. Taking pity on you, they jump over the balcony and disappear into the quiet night.

A sense of relief washes over you.

Who knows what could have happened to you? Maybe your mom was right about learning some self-defense; the pepper spray is not enough. As you stand and dust off your pants, a shiny light catches your attention; it’s coming from outside. You go against your better judgment and tiptoe toward the balcony.

Your jaw immediately falls to the floor when you spot an exquisite ruby pendant. A sparkling round diamond sits above the bright red gemstone, a slight tint of purple hue lurking underneath. Even the platinum metal chain carries an air of luxury. It’s as if the gods carefully hand-crafted this entire jewelry themselves. In short, it is simple but elegant.

Sliding the door, you wonder if this is some kind of trap. After checking your surroundings, you swiftly pick up the accessory and snort, “Thank you for making me feel poor.”

Fingers glide along the gemstone’s perfect curves as you gaze at the sleeping neighborhood. Your mind goes wild: Who was the person with those haunting golden eyes? Why did they come to your balcony? And why in the world did they leave behind a beautiful masterpiece?

You have so many questions but very few answers.

“So, you didn’t call the police?”

“Um…no…?”

“And why not?”

“It was a mixture of being both scared and stupid.”

“Oh my—” Fuyumi pinches the bridge of her nose. You twiddle your fingers like a guilty child and sink further into the booth. Fuyumi had her suspicions when you texted her to meet up at the usual coffee shop near your apartment. It’s your go-to place whenever you’ve done something questionable, which is ninety-nine percent of the time. Plus, the café whips up the perfect batch of castella—her favorite pastry.  

Customers stroll in and out of the coffee shop as piano music plays softly in the background. Roasted coffee beans linger in the air, tempting your nose with its delicious aroma. Out of habit, you push the castella closer to Fuyumi as if that would help soften the blow. She exhales, “Next time, please call the police.”

“Yes, mother,” you mumble much to Fuyumi’s displeasure, but she lets it slide. With the worst over, you bounce straight up and tap the table with an air of excitement. “Oh! Here’s the best part though, besides surviving a break-in—”

“The person was outside your balcony.”

“—close enough, but not really the point, okay?” Fuyumi rolls her eyes, and you fish out your phone to show her a picture. She takes a closer look as you ramble off. “Anyway, my late-night visitor left behind this gorgeous pendant! Why they were carrying this around is beyond me, and so carelessly too. I’m no jeweler, but I’m pretty sure those stones are worth a fortune—still beautiful, though.”

“Yeah, and stolen!” The white-haired teacher hisses. You blink, wholly baffled at her extreme reaction. Fuyumi whips out her iPhone with two fingers flying above the screen. She shoves it toward you, your eyes skimming through the article. The news delivers a sharp slap across your face as the realization sinks in.

Oh no…

Fuyumi bites her lip, “It’s The Grand Droplet, a priceless heirloom rumored to offer infinite life and prosperity. Police are saying the notorious thief, Hawks, stole the pendant last night from the Yutaka Jewelry Museum.” A few seconds later, she adds, “You have the pendant—”

“Shhhhhh!” A hand attacks her arm, your panicked eyes wandering around the coffee shop as if your cover got blown. No one turns their heads, but you shoot an annoyed glare at Fuyumi. “Why don’t you say it louder? I don’t think the barista heard you!”

“I’m sorry! It’s just,” she grips the table’s edge and leans closer, “This is serious! You have to bring the pendant to the authorities. See, this is exactly why you should have called the police last night! The longer you wait, the more guilty you look. Maybe you’ll even become an accomplice to the crime.”

“You’re not helping!”

“Sorry…”

You dramatically groan into your hands, “Why did this happen to me?! When I said I wanted to live like Larry, I didn’t mean this!”

“I know,” Fuyumi pats your head and sneaks a bite of her delicious treat; her phone chimes beside you. She checks the message before flashing an apologetic stare. “Listen, I have to take care of something with my family, but I hate to leave you like this.”

“No, it’s okay. I can handle this myself,” you pathetically convince her. “I’m sure nothing bad will happen, knock on wood—”

“The table is metal.”

“I said what I said!” Your fist aggressively pounds the table, scaring off some customers. A mother hastily pushes her child away from the chaotic scene. You calm down and sigh, “I promise to call you if I’m in danger, okay?”

“Okay.”

You nod before whispering, “Sorry, table.”

The walk back home is anything but relaxing. You are on high alert, throwing suspicious glances at anyone coming too close to you. They could be undercover cops waiting to ambush you and interrogate your poor soul for hours until the necklace reappears.

But I didn’t do anything! I’m a good noodle!

You sigh as the key unlocks the door, your shoes flying off by the entrance. Fortunately, you hid the pendant in a safe place. All you want to do is get rid of this jewelry; it brings nothing but trouble.

Marching down the hallway, you grumble under your breath, “Stupid Hawks, and his stupid stealing habits.”

Everyone knows about the infamous Hawks. He strikes when one least expects him to, and somehow successfully evades capture after every heist. But Hawks always leaves behind his signature red feather as a little present for authorities—it never fails to rile them up. Hopefully, the cops show some mercy when you explain what happened. Maybe you should work on your puppy dog look before heading downtown, which might help you score a few sympathy points.

You find the burgundy jewelry box sitting on the closet’s top shelf and breathe a sigh of relief—the pendant is still inside. Not wasting precious time, you close the lid and exit your room. A soft click makes you freeze.

Standing by the balcony door is Hawks, who wears a black jacket with a white shirt underneath. His ashy blonde hair is lazily slicked back, a few strands sticking here and there like no tomorrow. Surprisingly, he lowers the balaclava mask and flashes a boyish grin, “‘Bout time you came home! I was getting bored out there.”

“How did you—wait, never mind. You break into high-security places to steal things for a living,” you say, shifting the jewelry box onto your right grip. “Listen, as much as I would like to stay and chit-chat, my day is fully booked. Can’t really cancel on these people, ya know?” You slowly tiptoe backward, an awkward laugh ringing through the air. “Let’s do a rain check; I’m free next week. Okay? Okay! See ya—“

“Hold it!” You halt on his order, a curse slipping out your mouth. Hawks strides across the floor, and you clutch the box closer to your chest. You feel as though your feet are glued to the ground, the nerves growing stronger once Hawks stands only a few feet away. He crosses his arms and nods at the box, “Whatcha got there?”

“Oh, it’s nothing special, really.”

“Can I take a look?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Um, because I don’t want to, that’s why,” you childishly snap and send him a dismissive wave. “Now, shoo! You’re wasting my precious time.”

Hawks chuckles at your feisty attitude. He finds this whole ordeal extremely amusing. You know who he is, you know of his reputation just like everyone else in Japan. And yet, you keep on swinging like a boxer with your witty responses. Still, he has a job to finish. “I’m not leaving until you give me that pendant.”  

“Well, I hope you’re paying for half the rent because there’s no way in hell I’m giving it to you, Mr. Thief.” Two seconds later, you add, “Besides, it’s not even yours!”

“It’s not yours either.”

“Oh!” You give him a fake laugh, pointing one finger at your chest. “So the thief is criticizing me for having something that’s not mine? How rich.”

“You’re lucky I find you cute, but,” Hawks dangerously invades your personal space without giving you a chance to stop him. From far away, he doesn’t appear tall. However, Hawks somehow towers over you, which makes you involuntarily squeak. A wicked glint shines through his golden eyes as he studies your unique facial features. You suddenly forget to breathe when his eyes glance at your lips—damn him.

Hawks plucks the box from your loose grip. The hypnotic spell comes crashing down, and you loudly snarl, “Hey! Give it back!”

“Sorry, Dove,” Hawks keeps you at arm’s length, his gloved hand giving your shoulder a soft squeeze as he smirks, “I got a buyer who’s willing to pay a hefty price for this beauty. Of course, you are way more stunning, but he doesn’t need to know that.”

“Quit charming me!” You’re a blushing mess now and throw a pillow at him; he easily dodges it much to your dismay. Hawks’ cackles bounce off the wall, which makes you scowl. His fingers slide the balcony door open, and he tastes sweet freedom.

“Farewell, Dove!”

You have a deja vu moment when Hawks jumps over the edge. Your legs rush outside, and eyes frantically search the streets, but it’s no use—the thief is long gone. One hand slaps your forehead as you stupidly let him get away with the jewel. Feeling like a deflated balloon, you whip out your phone and make a quick call.

“Fuyumi…yeah, the pendant got stolen again.”

Stupid thief.

You collapse on the couch with as much grace as an inexperienced dancer who steps on people’s toes. Work left you exhausted, but you’re glad it’s almost the weekend. You’ll definitely sleep in and have a lazy day on Sunday. It’s what you deserve after meeting tight deadlines and also talking to the police about Hawks.

Fortunately, they do not blame you for anything, much to your relief. It’s been about a week since Hawks broke into your apartment to steal back the Grand Droplet. Police have no luck locating him; they believe the thief is lying low until it’s safe enough for him to strike again. Where exactly is anyone’s guess.

A knock disrupts your thoughts.

It comes from the balcony, and you jump to your feet. No one is outside, although a flash of red catches your eye. Lo and behold, it’s Hawks’ signature feather with a small note attached. Oh, how lovely, you think before snatching the gift off the floor. Your pet name is affectionately written across the paper. You hate yourself for finding Hawks’ calligraphy impressive, but proceed to read the note.

Sorry for cutting our convo short—had a deal to close. No hard feelings, though, right? If anything, I’ll make it up to you, Dove. Besides, you still owe me that rain check.

Hero Camp Bingo Masterlist

oh yes pls talk about the it musical parody. im in love with that! so what is you fav song or part in the musical? and who did you like best (the musical uh singers whatever they are called in english). what is your fav version like what day (with the best reddie maybe?)? also I couldnt stop smiling even when richie and eddie were just smiling and 'dancing' with each other in ie boys of summer. that was so cute. gosh I wish there would have been more. id gladly watch another two hours or more xD

I’d love to talk more about the IT Musical Parody!! It was so fantastic, went above and beyond my already high expectations!

My favorite song in the musical would have to be Bad, the Brittney Spears melody, OR Bohemian Rhapsody, but honestly it’s so hard to pick, all the songs were phenomenal!

My favorite PART was probably the your mom joke I mentioned in a previous post, but again I have so many other parts I love it’d be hard to list them all here.

Asking who is my favorite singer is so hard to answer tbh. Literally all of the cast sings better than some people I’ve seen on Broadway. Its 10000x better live because the iPhone audio doesn’t do it justice but,, my lord. But my favorite is probably Stan/Henery Bowers’ actress who literally KILLED it. Like she completely scalped me, I am bald from her talent. Runner ups are Mike and Pennywise, but again the whole cast was just so talented at singing I cannot stress this enough.

My fave day/version would be the one I saw live (11/10) because I really think their singing sounds surreally amazing live, even more than it does in video! And the reddie was also the best that day too, as Richie dipping Eddie during that one part in Toxic was *chef’s kiss* perfect.

And yess The Boys of Summer is so cute in general,,, they’re all such BFFs I love them. Eddie and Richie dancing during Anyway You Want It is so great too because they’re all trying to dance suggestively in pairs, but when Eddie and Richie are paired they just end up arguing because they can’t dance in sync 😂 

Some additionally comments you didn’t ask but I think are worth mentioning:

-Richie and Eddie being a power couple after Richie confessed up until Eddie died was SO cute. They were so caring for each other but still bickered like the used to. I think the writers and actors did a great job of portraying how they’d be the same bickering couple they were as friends but also more more loving when in a relationship together. The musical is canon, change my mind.

-I watched it live with the actor who was Bill’s replacement, and he was SO GOOD and so funny, I loved him so much!

-Stan reprising The Boys Of Summer before his death BROKE ME!!!!!!!

-I would never stan Pennywise in the movies or miniseries or book, but musical Pennywise slayed me and must be stanned. Him dipping Eddie before killing him,,, The style. The cartwheel in Bohemian Rhapsody. The black laced high heeled boots. Him wearing a robe and acting like a wronged ex-girlfriend in Act 2. Doing the drop splits. Just everything.

-Mike was so great!!! I love him so much and I’m so glad they gave him back his role as the research kid that was assigned to Ben in the recent movies. He’s really just a King.

-Really hope someone just films a whole thing of the show because the videos on Youtube don’t have some scenes in them, mostly just the songs, and tbh the scenes are the funniest.

Okay I’m going to stop before I ramble on for too long lol. But thanks so so much for the ask!

New phone, who dis

Have you seen the new iPhone 11? It really is an interesting little thing. I saw a meme that said that iPhone is going through mitosis and let me tell you, I laughed a lot! (In case you didn’t get it, mitosis = cell division. Now I hope you get the joke) I know a lot of people that ran to the Apple store nearest to them in order to be the first ones with the newest phone, even though the phone that they currently had was working perfectly fine!

Okay, this blog is to talk about Earth and whatnot so now you might be asking yourself “why is she talking about the new iPhone?” (if you weren’t, well… whatever, just keep reading). Let me answer your question. Because, my dear reader, we sometimes forget that electronics such as an iPhone require a bunch of natural/chemical elements in their fabrication and we do NOT have an unlimited resource of them.

My Green Chemistry professor showed us this periodic table and I LOVED it, but at the same time I HATED it. I hated it because of the sad truth it shows us. It’s scale is proportional to how much of the elements is left on the environment. Also, the little phone symbol shows all the elements that are needed in the fabrication of a mobile phone. If you look at it, 5 of those elements are in serious threat of “extinction” in the next 100 years! This is serious! We are yet again exhausting nature’s supplies and thinking nothing of it!

This was something else that she brought to my class, a study done by the Royal Society of Chemistry (she is British, I love her accent) that shows how we are treating these elements on our daily lives. We have to be aware of problems such as this and deal accordingly.

So here is what we can do: 1- If your phone is still working fine, don’t buy another one! Simple as that. You really don’t need the greatest camera, the biggest phone and/or the largest memory in order to survive. I promise. 2- If you still feel like you can’t breathe without having 3 different cameras on your phone, at least pass your old phone to someone else. Please don’t leave it just lying around unused. This is a WASTE of resources! 3- And last but the most important thing, RECYCLE! If your phone doesn’t work anymore, if you can’t communicate through it, please don’t throw it away as if it is just like any other trash or even regular recycle. It contains metals! Just like a battery, it has to be recycled in a proper way/place. Search the closest electronic recycling station to you and/or contact your phone provider to see if they don’t recycle old phones.

2 days ago we were marching for Earth, screaming that we wanted climate change and climate justice, but just walk and scream is not nearly enough. We have to actually ACT on what we want, we have to FOLLOW what we are demanding, we have to DO what we are preaching. Every little thing counts, even if it is just saving yourself some money when you don’t buy something you don’t actually need, because we ARE 7 billion people. That’s powerful.

O Captain, My Captain

So any of you who know me on any level know that I’ve been harboring serious lust affections for Mr. Nathan Fillion for eight years and counting.

Welp. I set myself a goal and today, I made it a reality.

Voila.

Yes, that is me cheesing with the one and only absolutely gorgeous Nathan Fillion, courtesy of Dragon*Con 2017.

And yes, I dressed to kill because I was intent on seducing the man and I have absolutely zero fucking shame.

It was an incredibly tense morning, and I do mean morning: me and my bestie got up at 5am and got dolled up, then drove to the train station to get to the con. The most stressful part of this fucked up con is that unfortunately, you don’t know what a celebrity’s autograph hours or their prices are until you’re inside the Walk of Fame room, and so you basically have to come crazy early and prepare to wait and be vigilant to get your chance. However, that’s part of why I always do photo ops. That is an assured meeting with my sweetie of choice, where as autograph sessions are first come, first served, and Nathan hasn’t been at Dragon*Con since 2008 and so I knew his fans would make up most of the Friday congoers. 

The photo op was at 11:40am, so I had a delightfully long wait, but thank God, the line moved quickly. That’s a blessing and a curse, which I’ll discuss in a moment.

So what’s Nathan Fillion like?

For one, he’s terribly, terribly polite. He introduced himself to each person who walked over for the photo and shook their hand and asked their name. Then the photo is snapped and he thanked them for coming out and for being patient. Which is hella sweet, honestly.

I had a chuckle with the volunteers in line because of my shameless Lady in Red ploy. The lady outside the room laughed because before I went in, I switched out my sensible flats for three inch heels (I like looking taller in photos, and plus, it makes me look sexier to some extent, imo) and she said, “Watch out! She’s got the heels out now!” And then the guy right by Nathan who helped move the line along asked if I was alone in the photo with Nathan and I said yes and he said, “Selfish, huh? I like it!” since the previous two photo ops were a group and a pair.

Let me tell you something, people.

One, Nathan Fillion has the softest hands I’ve ever felt on a man. I mean, wow. I swooned a little.

Two, holy shit, is he fucking gorgeous in person. 

So after the photo, I scurried upstairs and got in line for the Walk of Fame room and stood another hour in the blistering hot lobby until it opened and me and bestie made a beeline for Nathan’s line. Because I’ve been to Dragon*Con probably 2-3 times, I knew that it’s absolutely essential to be at the front of the line when Walk of Fame opens or you won’t get to meet your celebrity simply because there are just too many fans and they have to cut the room off when they reach their capacity. Since we planned ahead, we were within the first fifty people to see him once he came up from the photo op room. 

And that’s where my story gets a little bittersweet.

First off, his autograph was $100, cash only, and it wasn’t personalized. I frown at that. To give you some perspective, William Shatner and Gillian Anderson were both $80 last year. I don’t blame Nathan. I doubt he has control over his rates, but I do think it’s kind of shitty that his staff he won’t let him personalize the photo considering each fan is coughing up $100. To give you even more perspective, remember when I met Chris Evans January of last year? I paid $400 for his VIP package and it came with a photo op, a lithograph, an autograph, a reserved seat at the Civil War panel, and early access to the dealer’s room. And that’s Chris fucking Evans, a bonafide A-lister and a millionaire. So you understand that I’m feeling some type of way about how they decided to charge $100 with no personalized autograph. I can’t imagine it would take that much more time for him to add your name when he was already signing it.

Plus, because of the massive turnout of fans, each signing is under 20 seconds long. I’m dying inside because of it. If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know that I have a fixation with meeting famous people. Why? My life is boring as fuck and hardly anyone likes me, and so it really gets my motor going to meet famous people because I love telling the story of what they’re like. The average person’s not going to meet a celebrity, and so I enjoy it as a hobby because I find it very fulfilling.

So, out of courtesy for the hundreds of fans waiting to meet him, I didn’t really get to say much to him, and it hurts a little because I wanted to tell him a few things, but I didn’t want to appear selfish. 

But hey, that’s why this is bittersweet. The fact that I didn’t get to tell him what he’s meant to me is the bitter part. 

The sweet part is that it took probably about an hour and twenty to thirty minutes between the photo op and the autograph, and Nathan Fillion remembered me.

Him: Oh, we met downstairs! What’s your name again?

See, that? Yeah. I’m okay with that. Because he picked me out of a crowd of a few hundred people and that’s a pretty big fucking feather in my cap. So obviously my Lady in Red ploy worked to some degree.

Lastly, the funniest thing happened while I was in his line. He was leaning down to sign an autograph and then he looked up at the next person and ran his hand through his hair to push it out of his face.

You know those Pantene Pro-V commercials with the sexy half naked lady flinging her hair in slow-mo and it’s utterly tantalizing?

Yeeeeeeah, my mind just went fucking blank when he did that. 

I just need y’all to understand than Nathan Fillion looks great on TV, but the man is seriously a fucking hunk in real life. Goddamn. I started fanning myself, for God’s sake. He is just...beautiful in person. Whew.

Anyway, I was also lucky enough to meet two of my other idols right after Mr. Fillion: Michael Rosenbaum and Steve Blum. And I am delighted to say those interactions weren’t bittersweet--just sweet all the way around.

Michael Rosenbaum was a fucking darling cinnamon bun, just like Wally. He asked me my name and I told him, and then I started gushing about how Justice League was amazing and he just lent so much heart to the role of Wally West and he was basically my entire childhood. So then Rosenbaum turns to the line of fans and yells, “Hey! She says I’m her entire childhood! Like her whole childhood! Man, that makes me feel old!” And I apologized (jokingly, of course) and he starts goofing off with me and my bestie and even another fan in line. He was so adorable and gracious and I love the way he said my name. What a lovely guy.

Meeting Steve Blum (FINALLY) was a hoot as well. So me and bestie went up to him and we told him we were so happy to catch him this year because a couple years ago, we were in his line for an autograph at Momocon and they literally cut the line off ONE person away from the two of us after an hour and a half of waiting. Steve (bless his darling heart) apologized, but we of course told him that wasn’t his fault at all, and I told him that it was so great to finally see him up close because I had asked him a question at his panel and he jokingly told me he loved me and I almost fainted dead away and forgot my question. He laughed and asked me what question I had asked, and then he signed for me. While we were chatting it up, I asked him if he cried on the last episode of Cowboy Bebop and he said yes and went even further to tell me that the studio and the voice director didn’t tell him how the anime ended. He found out as he was voicing it. He was just like us--totally shocked and upset and like me he pretends Spike is totally fine at the end.

And then, in typical Kyo fashion, I accidentally made a fool of myself with my stupid iPhone. Apparently, it ran out of storage and so we were trying to record something and it wouldn’t take and so I’m apologizing profusely and blushing up a storm, but Steve is like, “No, it’s okay!” and he takes my phone and tries to see if it’ll work, but it won’t, so we record it on my bestie’s phone instead. He was so sweet! I felt like such a dumb schmuck when my phone wouldn’t take the video, but he was amazingly nice and I hugged him before I left and it was just the best thing ever. Steve Blum for president, man. What a standup guy.

I was drunk – I was drunk at a work function.

Technically, said function was a concert…but I had still been threatened with every foul task that could be assigned to me if I didn’t represent the company appropriately.

Being the face of Gucci was not an easy task when free vodka sodas were being offered up simultaneously.

As Sarah ordered her fourth double vodka red bull I had a vivid flashback to a mere four hours ago when Nicole had lectured us in the PR office before we made our way out the door.

“I’m serious guys, I want you presentable and polite tonight,” she had said while giving a pointed look towards Sarah, who had the decency to look somewhat contrite, “I want client ready responsibility, not Christmas party 2016 fuckery.” 

“Ok Mom, we promise,” Sarah smiled sweetly “scouts honor”

Nicole snorted, “As I don’t really believe you ever participated in any type of organized activities let alone the Girl Scouts Sarah, I am counting on you Kit to keep her in line”

The task hadn’t seemed like it would be such a problem when I thought we would just be sitting out in the crowd, but when we were handed the tickets at will call along with after party passes and promises of an open bar, I knew there would be trouble.

“Sarah, I think this should be our last one, we have work tomorrow and what if someone from his team tells Nic we were drunk assholes—“ my worried filled rant was immediately cut off by a manicured hand against my lips.

“You stress too much, its not like he’s going to show up to this thing, he’s probably headed to Soho House as we speak with a Victoria Secret model attached to his dick already,” she slurred slightly, a strand of her strawberry blonde hair stuck in her lipgloss “I swear sometimes you’re 25 going on 104, live a little.”

I firmly removed her hand from my mouth and shuffled as I checked that my lipstick was still within the confines of my lips in my iPhone camera.

“There’s nothing wrong with wanting to get 6 to 8 hours of sleep a night” I pouted, “and you never know, that guy right there could be someone who knows somebody who knows Nicole!”

As she looked over to the man I had tried to subtly nod in the direction of my heart dropped.

“Fuck, you were wrong, he’s here.” I whispered as I turned towards the bartender trying to frantically order water.

“Who?” Sarah whisper yelled looking around the room.

“Who?!” I huffed swapping out her drink for the water, “Harry Goddamn Styles that’s who, now drink this and try to look normal.”

We watched him circulate around the room greeting fans and those in the industry, most likely the Capital workers he had referred to during his set.

I noticed his warm energy as he enthusiastically hugged fans and posed for pictures, the same friendly smile on his face he had worn when he entered our office six months ago, shaking everyone’s hand, including mine.

“Lets move over here, hopefully he wont even come up to us and Nicole will let us live another day” Sarah laughed, grabbing another drink and leaving behind her half drunk water.

I scowled at the back of her head as she led me away to lean against a pillar.

We stood off the side with an advantageous view of the room over the next couple of minutes, me sipping my water, Sarahs lips pursed around the straw to her drink. 

The pleasant buzz of alcohol I had felt running through my veins twenty minutes earlier had evaporated as I anxiously tracked him through the room, the plastic glass in my hand sweating.

“Can you chill? You look like a stalker, just try to enjoy yourself” Sarah laughed, “We will leave as soon as I finish my next drink, and you’re having one too.”

I tried to protest as she walked back to the bar but my words went unheard leaving me to glare at her retreating form.

“That’s not necessarily the look you would want to see on someone’s face after just giving your all during a performance” a deep, slow voice said to my left.

I jumped slightly, causing my water to slosh over the brim of the cup and onto the toes of my leather loafers, “Fuck, I mean shit, no I mean shoot.”

Harry laughed as he looked down at my shoes, “Hey, I have those same pair but in the boot!”

“I know, I was the one who shipped them to you,” I automatically replied, eyes going wide at the confused look on his face, “I mean, hi – Mr. Styles, I’m the PR Assistant at Gucci.”

Recognition flashed in his eyes as he smiled, “I thought you looked familiar! Kitty, wasn’t it?”

I cringed at the nickname that was often associated with my name, “Uh its just Kit actually, occasionally Kitten to my Grand Pop, but never Kitty.”

When I saw his dimpled smile appear at my rambling I flushed bright red, great I had just told Harry Styles that my Grandfather called me Kitten.

“Alright ‘Just Kit’, thank you for the shoes,” his grin stretched large across his face, “did you enjoy the show?”

Sarah took that opportunity to appear beside me pushing a drink in my hand, “He wouldn’t give me another double vodka but were not cut off quite yet, Team Winona lives to ride another day.”

“Mr. Styles, this is my coworker Sarah” I grimaced at him.

Sarah immediately straightened and put on her winning PR face as she shook his hand, this was why she was so good at her job, she could turn it on in a second flat.

 “Please,” he grinned, “call me Harry, I am so glad you could both make it tonight, what did you think of the suit, did I do it justice?”

Sarah and I grinned at one another before she responded, both remembering the moan we let out when we saw which suit he had picked for the night, a favorite of both of ours.

 “It looked amazing, we can’t thank you enough for letting us be apart of such a momentous moment like your first solo tour” she expertly rattled off, any trace of the slight slur she had a half hour ago gone. 

Someone behind him called his name and I could see some fans anxiously standing waiting for their turn to be hugged and to receive their photos.

“We will let you get back to your fans, thank you so much for the tickets, Nicole sends her regrets that she wasn’t able to make it.” I smiled my grip on my sweating drink tightening a little as the end of our conversation came near.

“No problem at all, thanks for coming, I really appreciate the suits.” He said as he swooped down for a one arm hug, planting a chaste kiss to each of our cheeks before walking away.

“You look like you’re going to have an aneurism.” Sarah laughed before taking a swig from her drink, “wanna get out of here and go to McCoys with me?” 

“McCoys! Its already 11:15, do you know how slow the N is going to be, its going to take me 8 years to get back to Queens at this point.” I huffed checking my phone before stuffing it into my back pocket.

“Just sleep on my couch, were so close to my apartment right now” Sarah shrugged, taking my drink out of my hand and draining its contents and trying to subtly leave it on a table crowded with men in button down shirts, “come on, live a little.”

“No, I’m really tired Sar - but have fun without me” ignoring her pout I started to pull her towards the exit blocked by a large security guard.

I turned and looked back one more time at the room scanning the crowd before locking eyes with Harry, stumbling slightly as he sent me a dimpled grin and what appeared to be a wink.

I’m going to post my archived reaction to S3 and the Victorian Christmas Special, and some thoughts about the state of things. Completely unwanted and unrequested, but I want to share.

I also feel I should say that there is some positivity amongst the torrent of negativity.

I initially wrote the reaction to The Abominable Bride for my own personal catharsis. I considered posting it, tailored it as a review of the episode, even, but ultimately decided that I didn’t want to spread the negativity. If people were still enjoying it, then I didn't want to spoil it (I'm a sensitive type, and seeing negativity can easily harsh my buzz, so I didn't want to do that with anyone.)

I also still didn't want to believe where the show was heading. But now, given S4, I feel it's inescapable. Right now, I feel like I'm jumping out of the wood-work now to say: "SORRY GUYS, I KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO END BADLY." But I also really do want to make a point about the direction that the series took with S3 and the hideous Christmas special. [There were some considerable insulting blips along the way before that, but S3 (my main problem is His Last Vow) and TAB were so concentrated in their shitness, that I feel I need to single them out.]

I just want to point out that this wasn't a sudden thing. I feel like I need to say this, because a lot of people I'm seeing have been saying: "how did it go so wrong, you fucked up, this season was horrible" as if there weren't signs before this. People much more eloquent (and concise/pithy) than me have highlighted some of the questionable shit that has cropped up in Sherlock. I'm not going to write out all those points here. What I focus on are the glaring bits that offended me the most, that jarred the hardest, that really hurt -- and which appear to have been dialed up to 11 for this last series/season. I haven't read any (?? I think?) critiques of The Abominable Bride, so I can't say whether people have commented similar. I hope they have. (I had read over a couple of positive ones before writing this, on the IMDB page for that episode. This 'review' was what I was going to submit as a review on that page, because I was frustrated with the positivity, but I decided it was too-ranty and too downer-like for there.)

Very very few people are going to see this, let alone read this. But I just want to let out something that I’ve felt for a long time. That the signs of the fall were there, and that the writers, the actors, they've been screwing with us for ages, and that they've been wronging us in more ways than the no-johnlock queerbaiting-turned-queerbashing thing (which is a huge WRONG.)

So, this is my cathartic rant from however many years ago. I titled it, because Evernote wanted me to title it, "Notes on The Abominable Bride and the Questionable Direction of BBC's Sherlock" (the original title, I recall was: "what the actual fuck," or similar.)

In two words? Truly repugnant.

There is an aggressive amount of sarcasm at several points in the following paragraphs. Just, be warned. It should be obvious, and I've switched some of it out for easier reading with fewer double-negatives, but.

Given the era that Conan Doyle's stories were written, sexism is evident. Even within the character of Sherlock Holmes. He is quite gynophobic in the original stories, I have no illusions there. And yet he still respects women. He respects them when they're intelligent, when they're clever -- and those are not 'masculine' traits. He defends women, and threatens righteous violence against people who prey on them - one of my favourite moments is when he literally goes to get his riding crop to whip a man who has been manipulating and catfishing his own daughter. But still, there is sexism in Sherlock Holmes.

But I have never felt so attacked and demeaned as a woman by a Sherlock Holmes story as I have while watching this episode of BBC Sherlock. Whose idea was it to dress feminists in purple KKK hoods? To have them adopt KKK methods? To have pretty much all the women of the series thrown into a cultish vendetta club who specialised in systematic terror and serial murder? Oh, bravo. I don't care if it was all in Sherlock's head, or supposed to be justified within the narrative, or if it's supposed to be 'real'. Why would they put that on screen? Why would they make those links, create those parallels? And who thought having Steven Moffat tackle the topic of women and sexism was a good idea?

The only truly respectable life-like woman I have seen in this series is Sarah - a simple doctor, everyday but exceptional, who was clever and held her own. And yet she was disappeared. To be replaced by vindictive hags, insipid would-be love-interests, charicature land-ladies, and a woman who shot and technically killed the most-loved literary character of all time - who we're supposed to have forgiven because she "didn't mean to kill him," because her killshot was supposedly "surgery." The writers of this series would do well to remember that this isn't Doctor Who. It's not a science-magical world where the audience is obliged to grudgingly swallow down all the unlikely and downright absurd rationalisations that are thrown at us. If you use that sort of bullshit logic for a story which is supposed to be more-or-less realistic, it just looks exceedingly lazy -- even lazier than it does in Doctor Who. Not only that, It's fantastically cheap, and, at least personally, your audience ends up feeling cheated.

It also looks immoral in the extreme. How is it that all the characters -- John and Mycroft particularly (a pragmatic but emotional man who is supposedly devoted to Sherlock, as well as Sherlock's own brother who tenderly takes care of him every time he ODs) -- how are they supposed to have forgiven Mary too? I could, maybe, believe that Sherlock's self-esteem is so low that he might try to rationalise Mary's actions away in order to not rock the boat and not lose the people that he thinks of as his friends. But why in fuck's name are John and Mycroft believing that crock of shit? Even if it were "surgery," you're telling me that they can both just let the bare fact that she shot Sherlock slide? No visceral rejection of a person who could do that to someone you care about? No wish to see them pay, or be brought to justice? They're not repulsed by her actions in any way? They still trust her, when that's what she's capable of? When "I'll shoot Sherlock in the chest and maybe/probably he'll die," is a perfectly acceptable risk for her to take? (I say 'probably' because he flat-lined. And if it weren't a TV show, everyone has a good chance of dying if shot near point-blank in the fucking chest.)

Sherlock may be portrayed unsympathetically in this series, particularly in this latest episode, but he's no Magnussen. I wasn't torn up when Sherlock shot him in the face -- there was common decency on Sherlock's side, which goes a surprisingly long way. Magnussen was a blackmailing creep who had a penchant for sexual intimidation and degradation after all. But Mary shot Sherlock. Sherlock still equals 'good guy.' Let me break that down for you: A deceiving unrepentant liar and serial killer shoots good guy in chest for no good reason except so that she can go on lying. But not only are Mycroft and John letting that slide with little to absolutely no fuss, they're then letting Mary make smarmy little snide comments about Sherlock and joking about the lacking security of MI5 (and yeah, of course Mary can hack Mi5 instantaneously on an iPhone. Why not! Who cares about believability when you have the opportunity for 'witty' banter?) Mary is all-round a despicable character who somehow gets away with being a piece of shit because... She's sassy? The result is that she is a bad guy who gets no repercussions for her actions, and appears as shallow as a shower to boot. (I'm reminded forcibly of River Song.) The whole thing makes all of the main characters appear void of all human feeling, all basic human reasoning. They have no principles. Given that the show's main characters are meant to be crime-solvers, justice-dealers, law-and-order types, and "the British Government," you'd think there'd at least be some sense of moral rectitude abounding. And yet, no. There's a difference between "just enough of an arsehole to be worth liking," and just plain old arsehole. There's also a difference between morally grey and morally bankrupt. I feel increasingly under the impression that the writers don't know the difference.

On a related note: the true Sherlock Holmes was never, ever a sociopath (the term "sociopath" hasn't been used by any respected psychiatric authority since the 1960s - Sherlock would know that, even if the writers don't.) He has been sexist, but he has never been devoid of moral feeling. He has occassionally been devoid of tact, and often focused on fact over feelings, which are clearly very very different things. It's often remarked that as a character Sherlock Holmes is admirable, but that it's hard to like him. That's never stopped me before. That is, it's never stopped me with the original stories. Even within other adaptations, I have a great deal of affection for him and the stories he inhabits. With this series, they've done a good job of twisting that affection into disdain and disappointment.  

Oh! And whose idea was it to harass a historically asexual/non-sexual character on his orientation? That was an added touch of pure ignorance - and that amidst the existing pool of unreason, it must have been the audience's birthday! Then, of course, they couldn't possibly forget to lean on the fact that Sherlock kept Irene Adler's photo in the stories! I mean, it's a given that he should be harassed for being non-sexual and non-romantic, but of ~course, if he were actually interested in sex and romance, he's obviously secretly definitely, ~definitely straight. Never mind that he also kept a bust and picture of Goethe. Nevermind that he has a picture of Poe in his bedroom. Nevermind that Irene was (in the original stories) a woman who just barely outwitted him, who ~just got away. Forget that it's perfectly conceivable that he might admire her resourcefulness and cunning -- they're just the things that as a character he always admires -- no, he obviously kept her picture because he wants to fuck her. Of course! God forbid a man admire and wish to remember a woman and not want to fuck her. Never mind all other evidence that he's content being a non-sexual non-romantic creature. Never mind respecting his orientation as valid. Never mind that Watson explicitly states that Holmes wasn't interested in Irene romantically/sexually, nevermind that he was willing witness at her wedding-- Oh, but they've found a solution for that as well! Watson was lying! Of course he was! How convenient for them!

I cannot adequately express just how disgusting it is that they are trying to suggest, in this same scene, that this particular interpretation/incarnation of the character of Sherlock Holmes is somehow the secretly ultra-accurate portrait of the 'real' Sherlock Holmes. They literally state that the original stories are glossed-over for the good of Dr Watson's reading public of the time. How narcissistic and power-hungry (and delusional) do you have to be to say that your adaptation is somehow a more 'real' or 'accurate' portrayal? "Oh, he's arguably one of the best-loved characters of all time? Well ours is more accurate and better and we have mobile phones!" The original Holmes is an icon, a simple character who is at the same time exceedingly complex, he's paradoxical and he's wonderful. He stands the test of time. And there was once a time when I would have defended this BBC portrayal of Sherlock as the most accurate adaptation I've seen - a rougher, younger Sherlock, but tactfully brought into the real and present day. Not anymore. They've ended up exaggerating Sherlock's flaws so that they consume his entire character - the drug-use/-addiction, the tactlessness. Then they have all the other characters hate on him, slap him, mock him because of the exaggerated character traits that once accented Sherlock Holmes, and that the audience once loved so much. I just feel like the entire series is being geared towards people hating Sherlock Holmes, hating this series. I don't understand what the intent is for making these narrative choices.

You cannot put your characters into situations, have them graphically violated and manipulated and slander them in-text, and then give a small throw-away line as if to forgive all trespasses. Audience engagement doesn't work like that. You're working towards your audience feeling violated. Offended. And we're given no justice, no closure. And rest assured: we remember everything. Why are there no repercussions? Why is there so much that doesn't add up, why is so much skated over, if this is meant to be the accurate depiction of the 'real' Sherlock Holmes and his world?

I don't trust the writers of this series. I don't trust them to give me closure, to take me on a journey or tell me a story that doesn't rankle in the wrong way -  that doesn't violate reasonable sensibilities and then shrug off the trespass in the following moment. I feel like I should be slapping the creators with a glove and screaming "I demand satisfaction!" Because this latest instalment (the latest two instalments) have done little more than alienate and aggravate me. Even to the point that I'm ashamed of having once been a fan of this series. Even saying that I ask myself: am I over-reacting here? But I reason with myself, and I still feel it's true. It's become a series that I truly don't even recognise anymore. It feels warped. And I don't know how they can turn it back into a story about Sherlock making the transition from great man to good one. I'm not convinced that they have an idea of what a good man is, given what they're letting their characters get away with.

Moral relativity is a thing, but surely it's not just me that thinks the BBC Sherlock bar for "good" or "acceptable" is severely and unrepentantly low. Like I said: there's a difference between morally grey and morally bankrupt. There's not even any in-depth critique about actions, no reasonable discussion - everything's allowed, everything's thrown under the rug of "I'm a sociopath! He's a sociopath! She's a sociopath! Everyone's a sociopath!" Not only is that boring in the extreme to watch, it's so unsubtle that it's infuriating. There's no examination of what someone's shitty remark or action means. There's no weight to any interaction. It's pointless banter. It's flimsy. And when anything goes, then by what basis can they be solving crimes and catching 'bad guys'?

The vision for the series feels shot to shit. It feels like the series' universe has become an absolute fiction, devoid of any consequences, lacking in insight, depth, and subtlety, and populated almost exclusively by characters who drive me to be empty of any sympathetic feeling. I know that it's perfectly possible to write hateful characters who are never-the-less engaging, who inspire sympathy and empathy. But this series does neither. Look at the characters on paper and they become nothing. They're empty. I struggle to find instances of cogent speech that reflect some semblance of a fleshed out character beneath the flaking veneer. It's like they're just spouting words, but the words themselves have lost all meaning. And even when I find a moment that seems like it rings true and clear to the character that's speaking (Mycroft asking Sherlock if he'd made a list of narcotics used was the first that came to mind), that poignant moment is directly contradicted by their actions in a multitude of ways (your brother's killer is sitting right next to you, and you don't mind). That's a man who loves his baby brother (emotional reasoning) who is fine with his brother's flippant murderer a) still breathing, b) un-punished, c) being all sassy and nonchalant about Sherlock's drug abuse, and d) hacking into government restricted records in front of 'The British Government'. THAT SHOULD TRIGGER A FUCKING EMOTIONAL REACTION. It results in the portrayal of an inconceivable level of self-deception and compartmentalisation that reasonable men with moral feeling wouldn't stand. The characters don't feel solid. There's no integrity to them. You examine their reasoning, their internal logic, their actions, and they crumble to pieces. That, or they're so two-dimensional that they don't stand up to scrutiny anyway. It's all contradictions -- but they don't make a beautiful paradox, they make a jumble of nonsense tropes.

Beyond my perverse observation of how... wrong they seem, how much they betray how they're straying from the vision of the first and even the second series, these last episodes have simply served to make me disinterested in practically every single character. This is a truly impressive feat when they were once among my most-loved. I feel so fucking jaded. But all of the crap is just piling up to the point where I'm literally just stepping away from this series. I'm figuratively and literally throwing my hands up and saying: you know what? Fuck off. I have a feeling it may be like a car-crash for me for the next few episodes -- "don't wanna look but you can't turn away" -- but I don't see how they could bring the series back from this. I can't be the only person that's feeling seriously, seriously wronged by this episode. I can't be. Burn me once, shame on you. Burn me twice, shame on me. Burn me thrice? Fuck. Off. I'm off to watch something that doesn't make me want to throw up and claw my own face off .

So yeah.

After quietly “breaking up” with the show -- think in the style of Jon Snow bitterly saying: “My Watch is Ended“ -- I semi-waited for S4. I say semi-waited because I wasn’t going to watch it. But I was still hopeful, at least a little bit, on the behalf of the people that I followed on here, that I met in real life, that still had hope for the series. I thought to myself: “maybe. maybe it won’t be shit. maybe they’ll explain what the fuck why the fuck how the fuck.“

As we've found, and as I've mentioned, from what I have seen from my tumblr feed tonight, it went about as well as I expected.

I still haven't seen S4. The last episode I watched was TAB. But from what I've seen on here, it's been a clusterfuck of queer-coded villains, and copious dashings of even bigger plotholes than before, logical blackholes, more morally reprehensible crap -- and so many inconsistencies, it'll make your head spin worse than the hammed-up cinematography.

So, I'm so sorry for the people that had such high hopes, and who were deceived and let down in a big way. I -- and all of us, I think -- know that in the greater scheme of things, one TV show that went to shit, as TV shows are prone to do, isn’t so horrible a thing. But this show meant a huge amount to me. It meant an enormous amount to many, many others. I think of the creative fan-community, so many hours making gorgeously complex filthy brilliant heartwarming heartbreaking fic (so so much better than what we received)... to have what spawned that creative storm of brilliance and engaging life-affirming work -- life-consuming and life-ruining (in the good way) in equal measure -- to have what brought these works about go so bad, it actually hurts. It hurts less for me now, because I'm much further away from it than I was a couple of years ago. But it still stinks. And if it hurts me, I can't imagine how much that'd suck to have the show you spent so long making intensive work around go down the gurgler. The fandom and the general community that surrounded this show, for the most part, were way beyond what it ended up deserving.

In further efforts to legitimise my (our) frustration and disappointment, I'll reiterate that engagement in fiction is a huge part of our modern lives. We care about what happens to these characters and these stories. It matters, for one thing, because representation matters (be that queer, female, moral). Media fucking matters. It mirrors and exaggerates reality, and they ended up giving us a steaming pile of bullshit. (In a positive metaphor, this bullshit may still be used as effective manure from which better works can spring. Just be careful handling it.)

But, I have to say, given the backlash, I am also giddy. Because people aren't standing for it.

People are still making up theories to excuse where the show has gone, and what they've done, but at this point it really is super-keen denial, which some have realised even as they speak it. But the denial, the desperate “surely this is a trick” reaction, while sweet in its idealism, is also really sad. Because I don't think 'The Show' is gonna come back from this. I don't think they can get away with what they have been putting on the screens anymore. How can they? I can't forgive them. And after S4? I'm getting the impression that most of the world who gave the slightest of shits about BBC Sherlock can't forgive them either.

But lastly, I just want to say: okay, it hurts now. It really hurts. I remember that I was going through some horrible shit when they first started fucking up this show. Really shit timing, Show. I don't remember much from that time, just snippets, because that's how the brain copes. But I remember saying to my sister in a fit of desperate honesty: "all the therapy things I read, they say you're meant to hold onto the little things that makes life worth living, that you live for, that you want to see and experience more of... But BBC Sherlock was that for me, and it can't be that for me anymore?" I remember so clearly it being a question because I was fucking lost and BBC Sherlock was my refuge, anchor, thing that I could cling to as a source of enjoyment and escape and engagement. And it disappeared, nonsensically. There was no beauty to the unravelling, it just turned to crap on me. So if I sound like I'm being overly dramatic, trust that it’s coming from a real place, of just... complete disillusionment and disappointment. And to be not only without that refuge, but to have it turn into something grotesque that appalled me on a number of levels... that was just insult to injury.

“Breaking up with the show“ actually felt like a real-life relationship breakdown. Recently, I remember reblogging that post by alecslightvood:

one of the saddest things is when a show you invested so much of your time into and became emotionally attached to seriously fucks up and you are no longer captivated by it whether it’s because of illogical plots with zero substance, ooc characters, sexist writing or because the show kills off and treats minorities horrendously, and all you have left is this bitterness at how things turned out because something that once made you happy now leaves you emotionally and mentally drained.

and I remember tagging it: "it feels like being betrayed, the mixture of heartbreak frustration and disbelief, 'why are you doing this?', 'you're not who I fell in love with', 'you're not who I thought you were', 'you're not who I'd hoped you'd be', BBC Sherlock, I'm looking at you." Because my god, that descriptor fits Sherlock to a tee. I don't know what show they were talking about (the original post is gone,) but god that fits Sherlock so well.

I’m glad I jumped ship when I did (I actually mistyped “shit” there, guys, Freudian slip,) because honestly, I’m so so sorry for you guys that stuck it out. I had some closet hope for your wishes and genius plots (the ones you wove, not theirs) to come together in a beautiful climax that would justify everything. That would have been glorious.

But as it is. You are allowed to dump this show. You are certainly not alone. And I highly recommend it. The reason I’m pleased with this shows catastrophic fall (hah,) amidst the outrage and frustration, is because to be rid of it is freeing. To be rid of the quietly-but-growing-louder queer-baiting queer-bashing woman-hating show that does everything it can to insult the majority of those minorities who watch it, that insults the intelligence of its viewers with stupidity while screaming that it's the best... That's a good thing.

'Our world changes today': a journey to the Women's March on Washington

When the group of a dozen women arrive at the staging spot for the Women’s March on Washington on Saturday morning – just after dawn, if all goes as planned, to grab spots up front – it will have been 24 hours since they left home.

On Friday morning they headed out of town in their white rental van, a loose knit group of friends of friends of friends. They ranged in age from 17 to 70. Some were gay, some straight, one transgender. All shades of skin, in skin tone from dark to light. They were teachers, nurses, students, restaurant workers, animal rights advocates and retirees.

All felt called to join what for most was the first organized protest of their lives. Fueled by junk food, a passionate playlist, and a belief that they needed to stand up and be counted, they spent 12 hours in a van from Louisville, KY, and a night on floors, couches and inflatable mattresses in and around Washington DC, to become a dozen individuals in a sea of what is expected to be several hundreds of thousands of others.

Friday, 8 AM

The plan was to drive on Friday in order to ignore the inauguration. “Counter-programming,” joked Bridget Pitcock, chief of staff at a managed care company in Louisville. This trip was her idea. Reading about early plans for the march soon after Election Day, she called her wife of three years, Meg Hancock, and announced they would need to rent a van and fill it with others who were “outraged and in despair.”

Now they had, and once the van was filled to bursting with people, luggage and hand-drawn signs, Hancock, an assistant professor of sports administration at the University of Louisville, paused before taking the driver’s seat to offer a prayer she’d written a few days before.

“Let’s take a moment of silence for the world we knew,” she said. “If you march to say ‘fuck you’ to Trump, I get that. But if you march to say ‘fuck yeah’ for women, for people of color, for the disenfranchised, I’ll be the first to hand you a megaphone. The fact is, today we know our world changes, but it’s not because Donald Trump says it does. It’s because WE say it does. And we say how it does.”

“Because today,” Hancock continued, “is a demonstration of our commitment to each other, to our LGBT brothers and sisters. To our our black and brown brothers and sisters. To our Muslim brothers, but especially our sisters. To our Syrian refugees, to our immigrants. To our homeless, our poor, our hungry. We commit to listen, to seek to understand, to stand up, to rise up, to educate, to advocate. Our world changes today not because of Donald Trump. Our world changes today because of us. And it is an honor to be a part of that change with you.”

There was a lot of talk in the van about backpacks. And fanny packs. And charging spots. And bathroom locations. For weeks memos had been filling the official March website, and among the instructions was a restriction of the size of carry-alls, to 8x6x4. Clear plastic backpacks could be slightly bigger though, 8x8x6. There was also advice to buy Metro cards in advance by mail, followed by articles in the Washington Post saying the surge in demand for Metro cards meant many who had ordered weeks in advance would not have them in time for the march — including the dozen women in the van.

Ah, the logistics of a protest.

The conversation turned to the list of speakers that had only recently been released. “My nana fangirled over Gloria Steinem and Angela Davis,” said Blair Wilson, a 19-year-old college student who was traveling to the march with her grandmother, Linda Wilhelms. A veteran of marches – her first protest, in 1969, was against the Vietnam War – Wilhelms was excited to introduce her only granddaughter to this world. “Having her there, experiencing the emotions and energy of the event, was my motivation to attend,” Wilhelms said. “She is an amazingly strong-willed, opinionated young woman. I have worked hard to help her develop a sense of right and wrong, and she is all I ever hoped she would be. She is my hero!”

Each was marching for reasons that were the same, but slightly different.

Courtney Hardesty, a service manager at a Louisville restaurant, was marching “because of the repugnant rhetoric used in the last election” and “because there is so much to be done on the front of social justice.”

Kelsey Westbrook, the co-director of a nonprofit animal welfare agency, was marching “because each and every day since November 9, I’ve woken up with a disturbingly sullen, deep-rooted sadness that Trump will soon take over the highest office in the land. I’m going because I feel as though I’ve got to do something that particular day to stand with other women and allies in solidarity. I’m going because there are so many women who aren’t able or willing to go. I’m going because I won’t let his inauguration halt my motivation for progress and equality in our country and in my community.”

Jocelyn Duke, an artist with a background in social work and as a basketball coach, is marching because “it troubles me that we have placed a man in the White House who has openly disrespected and degraded so many people who are different from himself. I march for myself, my twin, my mother, every young woman that I’ve coached, the young women and girls I don’t know. But most of all, I march for my beautiful nieces who will grow up knowing that they are valuable and powerful because of their amazing minds and loving spirits. I pray that we get to a place where we truly love and respect one another so that our children and future generations have a better and safe world to live in.”

Kaitlin U’sellis, an analyst at a healthcare company, was marching for women’s health. In June she miscarried twins. The fetuses had to be removed with medical intervention. “I have always been pro-choice,” she said. “But since then I’m more aware of the need for women’s access to healthcare. I am marching to keep government out of my uterus and my bedroom.”

The twins’ due date was January 20. Instead she spent the day in the van.

They tried to shut the world out of the white rental van with the tinted windows. No one even thought of tuning to live coverage of the swearing in. But it was impossible to keep the outside from leaking in. They read jokes aloud that they found on Twitter: “The Bible just backed out of the inauguration.” They shared a a meme, a campaign poster of Obama/Warren 2020 – Michelle, that is.

The change of administration registered to them in a bizarre time delay. They watched the video of the awkward welcome of the Trumps to the White House by the Obamas, complete with that Tiffany box no one knew what to do with. But they didn’t see it until a half an hour after it happened.

“Hillary Clinton wears suffragette white to Trump inauguration,” someone read, out of actual order.

“There’s a tweet about a plane of all women headed to the march,” said someone else.

“Did you hear Southwest Airlines has pink lighting inside all its cabins today?”

They discussed any topic but the one that loomed largest.

“So you say, It’s not okay to be gay/Well, I think you’re just evil/You’re just some racist who can’t tie my laces/Fuck you.”

They followed that with Common’s “The Day Women Took Over.”

Having welcomed this Yahoo News reporter along for their ride, it was time to Skype with the team covering the Inauguration in Yahoo’s New York studio. They watched, waiting their turn, as Katie Couric talked to Matt Bai about the protests, the bottles and bricks thrown at police, the militarized response with tear gas and arrests.

The video on the Skype screen was the first they had seen. Are they worried, Couric asked. Do they condone the violence?

Over lunch at a quaint spot next to a gas station, not far off the highway, the women discussed whether in fact they were worried. They turned to Wilhelms, the veteran of marches, who stressed that the cause of this gathering was not violent.

But, she added, it is always helpful to have a scarf to tie around your nose and mouth in the event of tear gas. And soaking that scarf in water is even more effective.

Hancock suggested that each woman choose a “buddy” to keep track of her whereabouts should chaos break out.

As Washington neared, the traffic increased. So did the fog. The bags of pretzels, trail mix and Little Debbie Oatmeal Crème pies became less appetizing.

The Trump administration version of the new White House website contained no LGBT Rights page, a headline read. The public petition page was gone, too. And the section of the site that had been about Civil Rights was now about standing up for law enforcement.

Other cars inched along in nearby lanes, clearly headed for the march. The women spotted a license plate from Nevada with “Love Trumps Hate” written on the back window. A charter bus from St. Louis, whose passengers could be seen in the windows reading other headlines on other screens.

So i made a mistake. I was stopped last night and cited by a law enforcement officer for no proof of insurance. I had an idea that my insurance was no longer valid due to it overdrafting from my account when i had no money. so i contacted the insurance company and now they will NOT re-instate the insurance policy due to the fact that i have had two bad overdrafts with them. I just had to bring my car to the shop for a repair. They ended up needing to keep it. Now a rental was covered under the warranty. So at least the rental was covered. But the guy had me signing off on insurance and what not. I guess the insurance on my car would cover the rental if I had an accident. But they would take from my cars deductible. So I basically signed off on a Collision Damage Waiver and also personal accident insurance. I did decline supplemental liability insurance though. Should the warranty be covering these fees or was this an extra that I got talked into? Because if the warranty covers the rental they aren't making anything. My understanding is it could be better because I am covered under their insurance if I have an accident and it wouldn't come off my own cars deductible? alright, well today was all around pretty good. I was bad and did not get out of bed when my alarm went off at 9:30, and slept until like 11:38 instead...lol, whoops. so I did as much bar prep as I could before my 2 pm PT appointment. PT was fine, one of the world cup games was on the tv so most of us were watching and discussing that. My PT guy and me are trying to figure out where to go from here, it seems like my back gets aggravated on days when I’m out and doing things, but not so much when I’m staying in all day studying, which of course isn’t a terribly realistic situation for any period of time beyond something like this. At the end he did mention that something that has helped other female patients with back pain was to get a breast reduction and I was like........idk how to feel about this. Like has it occurred to me that starting to get back pain at 24 years old might be related to my somewhat oversized chest? Yes, of course. Is that something I want to do to treat it? eh.....I don’t know. I already have really shitty body image issues and I feel like going into something like that without really knowing how I would look when I came out would be a big risk to take and idk if I want to do that. So idk, I guess I’ll think about it. I looked at the different phone models for a while, trying to determine if there were any real differences between the iPhone 7 and 8, and of course the X is the full screen thing, which I’m not sure how I feel about, I’m sure I would get used to it once I had it but it wasn’t terribly easy to use just looking at it. So from there I went to one of the giant Mac displays they had on the wall that people can use, so I was a bum and brought up my twitter account because I can’t deal with being cut off from my twitter feed even for an hour 😂 so I spent a while on there then eventually just sat on a bunch by the entrance for the rest of the time. I had brought a pair of jeans with me to change into for the party tonight instead of wearing my sweatpants from PT, so shortly before my phone was going to be ready I ran to the bathroom and switched my pants, then grabbed the phone and ubered to the retirement party for my old boss. It was super convenient because the riders before me were getting dropped off like exactly where I was, so legit like they just got out and I went in with the door never closing lol. I wasn't sure what to expect about the place it was at, it was a “lounge” but I mean, that can mean a lot of different things. They were checking IDs at the door, so I just let them check mine even though I wouldn’t be drinking, just easier that way. the party was on the second floor, which was a nice sectioned off space with a bar and some food and some mini tables, and many people milling about. My boss worked at the office for almost 30 years, so pretty much the whole office was there, plus the judge from the courtroom he was assigned to, and the two former public guardians along with the currently acting one, so plenty of familiar faces were there. My legal drafting prof who used to work there was there, and I at least traded hellos with everybody else I knew but she seemed very pointedly trying to avoid acknowledging me, and I mean whatever lady you do you I don’t really care 😂 at one of the first tables was the receptionist/support service guy who I’d been kinda flirty with last summer and left the office with his phone number, and we chatted a few times and then kinda just faded out. But I claimed a spot next to him at the table and pretty much stayed there for the rest of the night lol. We talked about a lot of stuff, apparently the office is going to be in need to hire attorneys very soon, because they just had a LOT of attorneys leave (I think they said upwards of 20, which is like, 1/5th of the office) so I will definitely be looking out for that, I don’t want to be overconfident but if they are hiring for an entry level position I think it’s fairly likely I’d be able to get it, they hire a lot of their law clerks, half the people who work there told me they clerked there during law school, and I know I have 3 semesters worth of glowing performance reviews because I worked my ass off for 3 semesters making sure I went the extra mile and got everything right. So that would honestly be a lifesaver, because they were always going to be my first choice, but they’ve been in a hiring freeze for years now so they never really came into play, but if they’re hiring it’s a game changer. I know I have to hash out with my parents what exactly my plans are for the next few months at least, because I’m very worried that if I end up taking the Illinois bar I’m going to end up being very unprepared. I mean, the substantive stuff is gonna be the same, so it can’t really be that different, but still, they have separate courses for separate reasons, and the bar is only 4 weeks out now (which is terrifying). So I know I need to figure that out very soon. But the party was fun, they had some good food including some heavenly poutine, and I got to talk to a lot of people I knew. It was funny, because when I worked under him like everybody else in the office I talked to was like “oh, he was my first supervisor when I worked here!” and he’s just honestly the sweetest most hardworking guy who often says and truly believes that he had the best job in the world, because we’re able to help children who can’t help themselves, and we even get paid for it where I’m sure many of these people would be here even without pay. I really liked that because it’s very much how I feel about the situation and where I want to be with all of this, so if this job works out I’m gonna be very pleased. Of course I have to go back to 7 am wake ups 5 days a week, but thankfully this time I won’t be cripplingly depressed so that won’t be such a big issue. When I was chatting with people my boss introduced me to one guy and said he was handling the appeal on the child death case I had worked with my boss, and that kind of peaked my interest, because not all that many people appeal, and I mean, they had a pretty  open and shut case. So I asked who was appealing and he said all three parents (mom, dad of the oldest 3, and dad of the twin babies) were, which is kinda ridiculous being that mom is in jail still for everything they could convict her on, which for some reason did not include a homicide charge, and I don’t think I will ever be over what a gross miscarriage of justice that is when dozens of similar cases (child neglected to the point where they starved to death) got murder charges. It’s just not fair. This sweet little boy deserved better. He deserved justice, not a minor penalty for “arson” because they lit his body on fire. Whenever I get frustrated and disillusioned about what I’m doing with my life I look at my wall where I have a picture of Manny, and it never fails to stiffen my resolve, because I never got to meet this sweet little boy, but there are so many other children out there like him that may end up dying at the hands of their parents that we can stop. How could I not throw everything in my life towards that? If the system is going to be broken (as it is), well then I’m going to be the one to fix it, even if it takes a lifetime. I’m rambling, I know, I just get emotional about that case. But anyway, back to the party, I spoke with the guy for a few minutes about how awful the case was and how it must’ve been even worse on the trial level than the appellate level. He said he “wasn’t worried” about it which I think is a very fair assessment. It all just reminded me of when I was in the first interview for the NYC job back in December and I was talking about working on the case and arguing a motion and this guy is just staring at me like I have two heads, and was like “......they let you do that?????” And I just kinda smiled and said that my boss had a lot of faith in me, and he did, and I think that sums up what kind of leader he was. There was a time of people talking and sharing stories which were all very nice. I ended up heading out around 8, receptionist guy (I do know his actual name, I forgot it at first but found it in my contacts) walked with me to the bus stop I was going out from, apparently his home was in the same direction lol. He has really nice eyes and eyelashes, and we spent a lot of the time at the party being low key flirty and like, even if this ends up being just nothing it was at least a good time. I had to switch buses, so I did that and had to wait for like 10 minutes for the next one to show, but at least it wasn’t either dreadfully hot or freezing out. Once I got home I jumped right back into my bar lecture because I know I needed to get that done, and I ended up with less than an hour (out of 4) left on it when I stopped a little before midnight. Tomorrow I’m gonna have to make a quick Target run at some point to pick up a prescription and get refills of my CO2 bottles for my sodastream, since I’m almost all the way out of those. I’m hoping to keep the trip short though (I may just uber there and back to save the hassle of timing multiple transit vehicles to work into a workable timeline). But other than that I’m going to be studying the rest of the day and hopefully knock out a good chunk of the work. It’s now past 2 am and I am quite tired, so I think I will be getting to bed and hopefully falling asleep at this time. Goodnight my loves. Happy Friday.
