17 and 29 foe AO3 wrapped?
Thanks for the ask!
17. Your favorite character to write this year?
You sent this while I was answering this one from someone else lol but that's okay it's Harley Keener. My special boy. Save me from my slump special boy. Save meee
29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?
It's funny that of my piddly 4.6k that I posted this year (*sob*) it's all last year's work. Which is great for this question! Because that means I get to pull from a wip. Let me see....
OKAY this is long and I know you don't go here so you're under no obligation to read it, but you asked so here's the answer pulled from my Harley-centric fic still in want of a real name:
The humming stops as she turns from poking the sausage around one of many cast iron skillets. Dirty blonde hair—same as his save for her streaks of gray—piled atop her head in a thick bun that is neat for now but will bloom and fray from the length of the day and the humidity of the kitchen. Crows feet and worry lines crease her forehead. Her eyes are a deep warm brown like Abbie’s. Wide nose, full cheeks, chapped hands from frequent washes, wide hips, thick middle, and a foot shorter than him—he looks at his mother and realizes all at once that he’s missed her.
“Hey, Mama.”
She sets aside her wooden spatula and pulls him into a hug—squeezing tight while his long limbs drape around her shoulders. Against his nose, her hair smells sweet.
“Harley James,” she pulls away and looks up at him with her hands on her hips, “you been avoidin’ your ma?”
“No, ma’am.”
She makes a sound of disbelief but there’s no offense in her expression. Were Mary Ellen and Louisa here they’d be trading glances. Kids, they’d say with only their eyebrows and knowing smiles. Don’t matter what the rest of Rose Hill thinks, or how big his shoes get, to Mama he’ll always be her kid, and with that comes certain expectations.
Such as stoppin’ in for a meal more’n once a week—something he neglects awfully.
She eyes him up and down and her usual commentary runs through his head: I swear you’re thinner every time I see you. I can near see between your ribs and out the other side. Ain’t that boy been feedin’ you? You know, when I stayed home I kept house and I kept my family fed and that was that. Time’s, they change. Don’t make that face at me; I’m only sayin’ what I see. You know what else I see? You work too hard. How come you never have time to sit and visit with your ma?
He braces for it, anticipating the worst, but she surprises him and only asks, “Got time to sit for a meal?”
“Always,” he says, even though they both know it to be a big fat lie.
Still, she smiles, pleased, and points at a netted bag of apples sitting on the counter. “Peel those for me, baby.”
He steps up to the apple peeler anchored to the counter and rolls up his sleeves. “All of ‘em?”
All of ‘em.
They work back-to-back how they used to, an efficient machine, callin’ out hot pans and passing shakers, butter, and cartons of cream back and forth across the limited space. Mama looks over his shoulder as she returns the milk to the fridge and clicks her tongue at the state of the apples simmering in his skillet. She sets a block of butter on the counter beside him. Dutifully, he cuts free and few more pats and stirs ‘em in with the bubbling cinnamon, sugar, and nutmeg that perfumes the air, combining with the sausage and browning biscuits into the smell of his childhood.
Biscuits and gravy can be tossed together quick with minimal clean up and stick to your ribs to ensure you’re not wilting by nine. Then you always need to close out a meal with somethin’ sweet and fried apples are Abbie’s favorite. At least once a week, but often more, they had biscuits and gravy and apples for a meal. Didn’t much matter which one.
Harley scoops out a heap of sweet gooey apple slices and trades plates with Mama for one loaded down with biscuits, sausage gravy, and a couple sausage patties on the side. He adds a serving of apples, knowing he’ll be hard pressed to clean his plate as it is, but they’ve been getting on so well and he’s not gonna to be the one to sour the morning by bringing up something as silly as his limited stomach capacity.
They leave the lights off in the dining room and eat with the sun on their backs. Soft, lily white biscuits yield under his fork like butter until he gets to the crispy bottom. He chases gravy too thick to soak with a bite of biscuit and swallows it down with a bite of sausage. Black pepper, sausage spice, and creamy gravy—the taste of home coats his tongue and warms him from the belly out. He saves the apples for last—sweet, soft, buttery, and perfect.
He scrapes his plate and licks his fork clean as history could have predicted he would. He’s never been able to turn down Mama’s cooking. Food’s always been their great equalizer. Cooking it, serving it, and eating it. Things between them are never easier than when they put food at the center and dance around it.
It’s why his stomach is tight with anxiety now that the food is gone.
He waits until she sets down her fork and curls her fingers around her coffee mug, elbows on the counter, a mirror of him, to clear his throat.
“Evrett Jensen pulled a runner again,” he says, even though she’s surely heard that much by now. The diner ain’t far behind the bar when it comes to spreading gossip. Wherever folks gather, that’s where the grapevine runs thickest.
Sure enough, she taps her fingernail against her mug and doesn’t look at him as she says, “Heard y’all caught him afore he got off with anything vital.”
“Abbie did.” He sighs. “Then she had him brought to me to sort out.” Now she looks up. He doesn’t lift his head and presses his palms tight against the heat of his mug.
“And did you?” she asks.
He shakes his head. “‘Fraid I only made it worse.”
She sits silent and watchful until he raises his head to witness her expectantly raised eyebrows.
With shame, he tells her the bones of last night’s fiasco, naturally leaving out the missing testosterone and glossing past the exact things he screamed when he lost his temper at a teenager.
Mama drains her coffee. “You sent him to Tonya?”
He nods, then sighs and knuckles his forehead. “I don’t expect him to last long. Just hopin’ long enough to figure out what to do with him next.”
She stands and collects his plate. “You send him to me.”
He sits up. “I can’t ask you to—"
She skewers him with a look. “When was the last time you asked me anything, Harley James?”
Shame closes over him. “I’m sorry, Mama. I— How are you?”
She snorts and with a roll of her eyes, sweeps through the chrome door with the dirty dishes, saying, “Ain’t nothin’ I ain’t handled before. You turned out just fine.”
“But ma—" He hurries after her, snatching up his coffee as an afterthought. He steps into the kitchen and finds her already at the sink scrubbing away while the water runs hot. He sets aside his mug and rolls up his sleeves. “It’s different. And he’s way worse than I ever was.”
She flicks a doubtful glance at him as he settles at the sink beside her and accepts the first scrubbed plate to rinse.
“I love you, honey, but I doubt that very much.”
He bristles with offense. “I never stole anything from anybody.”
“I’d rather his sticky fingers over the constant worry you’d come home weeping and pregnant.”
He drops the plate and it clatters loudly in the sink.
She continues, “Or worse, you don’t come home at all ‘n disappear with that boy.” The scrub brush slows against ceramic. “I still worry if I’m bein’ truthful.”
That boy.
She never calls him by his name.
“His name is Georgia.”
“I’m aware.” She holds out the second plate.
His fingers curl over the lip of the sink. “You don’t need to worry about that. We take precautions.”
“I know you ain’t on the pill.”
He hates the pill. He tried it once at Mama’s insistence when he was fifteen, after the first time she caught him and Georgia alone in his room with the door shut. They weren’t even doing anything. Weren’t even touching as they laid on their backs atop his bed speaking softly of futures brighter than the one Rose Hill offered.
Then Mama barged in and jumped to every wrong conclusion that eventually would turn out to be right, but not for months and months and months. She was on the phone scheduling an appointment with his doctor before Georgia had even gotten his shoes on.
Harley couldn’t look at him for a week. And by the time he drummed up his resolve and spoke to him again, he was on the pill and his hormones were strange and unfamiliar and tripping all over the place. He’d lose his temper over something trivial and be crying a moment later, all while deep inside he panicked—trapped by his emotions, betrayed by a body that was only ever incidentally on his side before, but now had turned its back on him entirely.
He threw out the pills within the first month and refused more. He took his testosterone religiously, desperate to feel normal again, and swore up and down to Mama and his doctor that he wasn’t sexually active and when he decided to be he’d use a condom and be careful and wouldn’t shame his mother by becoming a statistic. God forbid.
The joke was on all of them because when he and Georgia did have their first time together, they very quickly found out that vaginal sex sends him into an anxiety spiral. That was a disaster, but together they discovered many other ways they could be intimate that they both enjoyed, and not one of them leads to pregnancy so he hasn’t revisited his decision to stay away from hormone-based preventatives.
But besides all of that, more than any of that, his relationship with Georgia is none of his mother’s business. If she wants to be let in, she’ll have to start using his name.
He breathes out slowly and takes the plate. He says nothing as he rinses it and stores it overhead in a slotted rack to drip dry over the sink.
“D’you want me to bring Evrett by today?” he asks, abandoning the previous subject entirely.
Mama’s squatting in front of a cupboard, digging through Tupperware for the matching lid to the bowl in her hand. “A few days with Tonya’ll do him good, I expect. I’ll be a breath of fresh air in comparison.”
He can’t see it.
“I’ll bring him in a few days then.”
He waits while she spoons the remaining fried apples into the bowl and seals it. The lid steams over and the plastic is hot in his hand as he takes it and allows his mother to kiss his cheek.
“You make sure that gets to your sister,” she says. Her eyes are dark as they sweep over his face. He sees neither guilt nor regret in their depths. “Love you, baby.”
He swallows his pride and says, “Love you, too.”
And he does. He just wishes it didn’t hurt so much.

May I Offer You Some Funny or Interesting Channels/Podcasts in This…Time?
Dear God, I hope I don’t flub this. It feels like every time I make one of these, one person on it messes up. But so far, they’ve been going strong so let’s try!
My Dad Wrote a Porno (podcast): You read that right: His dad wrote a porno (well, literotica), the "he" here being Jamie Morton. More unfortunately, it's really bad literotica. Come join Jamie as he drags his friends Alice and James along on the whirlwinding sexcapades of Belinda Blumenthal as she takes the cut-throat world of pots and pans sales by storm -- and by suck!
What Went Wrong (podcast): Honestly, it's a miracle any movie gets made. Seriously, you'd be surprised just how much can go wrong. From slashed budgets to nightmare actors to actors developing UTIs before filming, Chris and Lizzie are here to clue you in on just how insane the productions behind your favorite movies can get.
Cult Podcast (podcast): Disclaimer: This is hosted by two comedians, so their humor may not be for everyone. That, and sometimes the subjects they cover are downers. Shocking but you'd be surprised by just how many actually aren't as depressing as you'd think. At any rate! Hosts Paige and Armando are here to give you the bizarre and sometimes downright mortifying histories of cults -- both the religious/spiritual kind, and of personality.
TruGreen7's "4 Artists Fakemon" Series (Youtube): Exactly as it says on the tin! Fakemon artist TruGreen7 invites 4 different artists to come collab on his channel. Every video has a unique prompt each collaborator is expected to regard when designing their Fakemon and as a result of the different styles and interpretations coming together, you wind up with some awesome and totally sick designs! (Check out his other vids, too, also.)
Classics Explained (Youtube): Oh no, my very blatant love of learning is showing!! Classical songs, movements, etc are broken down against a backdrop of comedic animation. We learn about the composer, the history behind the work being focused on, and the symbolism used in the instrumentation and what story they are trying to convey. It's a neat way to simplify something so complex, and can make classical music less intimidating. Think No Fear Shakespeare, but for music.
Kennie JD (Youtube): Beautiful, intelligent, and funny as hell. Join Kendall as her home skillet biscuit for just about any video of hers, but especially for Bad Movies and a Beat, the series where she reviews bad movies while putting her makeup on. However, she also reviews shows like The Ultimatum and Love is Blind, so if you want the rundown on those shows but never really wanted to actually watch them, there ya go.
Dollightful (Youtube): Need to look at something bright, colorful, and cute? Check out Dollightful! She makes cute custom dolls whose themes range anywhere from drinks to Halloween to Christmas to just plain cute!
Razzle (Youtube): Three (sometimes four or five) guys get sauced while watching and reacting to movies like Diary of a Wimpy Kid, live-action TMNT, and the bad Pinocchio movie (no, not the Disney one). I laugh way too hard at these guys, I can't watch them in public anymore because people might think I'm insane.
Mugiwara no Goofy (Youtube): So...I am technically trying to get through One Piece. But. I have cheated a bit on spoilers. And it's frankly thanks to this guy. He does other stuff but what he's best known for is taking an arc or a turning-point episode of One Piece and breaking down how actually fucking insane this shit is by putting it through the point of view of somebody who isn't a Strawhat or Strawhat-affiliated. Usually either the person who Luffy is about to beat the living shit out of, or some bystander who has a name but not the understanding of what kind of show they're in.
Squirrel Tactics (Youtube): Love King of the Hill? Well so does this Texan squirrel! So much so, in fact, that he learned how to speak, master technology and reading, and now makes Youtube videos breaking down characters and episodes from that beloved classic.
SuperRaeDizzle (Youtube): This Youtuber takes one for the team and purchases all sorts of art products -- many of which I've never heard of or could never dream of affording -- and reviews them! Sometimes we're talking something as simple as a discontinued Crayola, other times we're talking about a paint they can no longer make because it's toxic. And then, at the end of the video, she makes a piece of art using all the products reviewed!
Something Wicked (Youtube): Another thing I love to watch is model-building channels. And no, I don't necessarily mean, like, Gundam (though those are also cool). I mean, people making clay figures and models using only their skills and handy products. Something Wicked only just started a year ago and Barry only has about five videos so far but if you check them out, you'll see why: Each figure is made with such incredible detail, it's astounding. Plus, every creature is based off of an illustration provided by an old manuscript or text! So this means we currently have an alchemical creature; a kappa (with three buttholes!); and a devil with an ass on his face!
Studson Studio (Youtube): A more model-building channel, only Studson uses trash and trinkets to create replicas of La Casita, Howl's castle (all forms), and much, much more. Like a train with Shrek's face on it. Come for the building, stay for his deadpan delivery. Maybe if tyou stick around long enough, you'll catch a glimpse of the legendary Centipede Horse . . .
North of the Border (Youtube): Another figure-builder, Adam likes to make tiny, nerdy things. Unfortunately, these tiny, nerdy things also happen to be quite cursed. Not all of the time but enough of the time. It's a hoot.
I think this could do for now . . . Tell me about your recommendations!

Philadelphia Chicken: two grilled chicken breasts smothered in sautéed onions & mushrooms with roasted broccoli & cauliflower. 🍄🧅🥦
Luna Rose enjoyed the carrots as a special treat. 😊 🥕 🐾🐾 🧡
This is local take-out, but easy enough to make at home too. I've been having a bigger meal like this once a week lately, but this still made two meals for me. 😉
Most days I just have eggs, or an egg wrap, but when I actually have an appetite 🤩 this meal is one of my favorites!
I had this week before last, then last week I had the big ribeye dinner, and next I think I'm going to get mexican.
I'm thinking a sizzling skillet of steak, chicken & shrimp with avocado... with queso cheese dip drizzled over it all. 😋
But today I'm making low carb sausage biscuits 🥰 with this keto drop biscuit recipe:

My dad was from a little former(?) fucking sundown town in central IL and that side of my family refused to season their food at all. Whenever I went there for holidays I had to eat bland gray slop. My dad couldn’t stand garlic or anything with too much seasoning on it. When he died I remember thinking “well at least we can cook with garlic now” and then feeling like a monster for thinking that. Grief is weird.
Thinking about the weird deviled egg man from Tolono that I worked with on Election Day who’s wife said she “didn’t grow up with mustard.” Not even French’s yellow mustard not even fucking MUSTARD.
My mom’s family (also white) is from the working class south Chicago burbs and they’re the exact inverse of the cold, stilted people on my dad’s side. They’re loud and dramatic and dysfunctional in the opposite way that my dad’s family is dysfunctional. Grandma just kept having kids and couldn’t stop bc no birth control in the 50s and 60s so they were all crammed together in this tiny 3 bedroom Sears kit house and some real Jerry Springer shit went on, but god damn could my grandma cook. Homemade waffles, pancakes, biscuits and gravy. Leg of lamb on Easter studded with cloves of garlic and mint. Fried chicken in a cast iron skillet. I wish I would have asked her for her recipes (the lamb especially) but she’s gone now and I didn’t. Idk if it’s bc the white people up north aren’t as homogenized as they are down here and still retain a sense of cultural identity outside of the vague blob of “whiteness” (a lot of them are still real racist yes I know) or bc my grandma grew up on a farm in southern Indiana which is basically the south but either way the difference is stark.
I grew up and still live downstate but in a diverse college town with a huge East Asian population in particular, a town of 260,000 people where you can throw a rock and hit a really good Chinese or Korean restaurant. There’s places tucked away in strip malls and on campus where nothing is in English and you have to point at shit like a big goofy white idiot but it’s all very good and unlike anything either side of my family ever fed me growing up. I’m lucky to be from this little oasis where I got exposed to other foods and cultures. I kind of want to write a book about university towns in otherwise deeply conservative areas bc I feel like it’s a complicated and interesting subject that hasn’t really been explored that much.
Anyway my feelings toward my downstate home are complex. I get real mad when coastal or Chicago people are dismissive and shitty towards a place they’ve never lived in before but I also recognize that there’s a lot of serious problems here. I’m not gonna discount small towns entirely like some lib asshole bc there’s a lot of cool things and people tucked away in those places, but it’s also like. Yeah.
But I still love a goopy casserole some times or a big pile of chicken and noodles. I’m not above it by any means.

hello i would like to know about your detectives pls so 1, 4, 8 and 17 for any of them you want (or all of them 👀) (@ do-this-for-me)
hello, friend. 💗 let me answer for everyone 👀
answering questions from The Wayhaven Chronicles | Ask Game.
1. What's their name?
well, i have 4 detectives:
Mona Batra (she/her), Dinah Fernandes (she/her - wouldn't mind they/them), Arzoo Shafri (she/her) and Nimah Sen (she/her)
4. What is their personality like?
Mona: Mona is warm and soft, but also incredibly cautious and brainy. interestingly, doesn't mind being the candle that burns itself to provide light to others, so to speak. fierce in a mama bear way & displays quiet resilience.
Dinah: Dinah is spirited. a firecracker. stubborn. but she also is passionate, kind and fiercely loyal. has a deep, deep love for people. a lot like her dad - something they are told more often than they like.
Arzoo: Arzoo is very artistic, very passionate and very driven. is also warm but in the way a ginger cookie is warm - in a slow, not-immediately-obvious way. this is mostly because of how intimidating she seems with her height and the grace she carries herself with.
Nimah: Nimah is a seemingly no-nonsense but always seems to have a sparkle in her eyes. extremely intelligent, very curious and very loving (but only once you peel away her 487 layers of "huh. okay"s and "hmm"s). used to be quick to anger, but she's worked through it.
8. What do they think of Unit Bravo?
Mona: as people, likes & trusts all the members of the team. their association with the Agency is something that she is quietly eyeing because she doesn't fully trust the Agency (though she doesn't show it). with N - well, she shares an increasingly complicated relationship with them, where she is aware that she is close to in love with them but cannot seem to get out of that odd limbo; so it's a very "when will they just kiss for the love of god" kinda situation in the Warehouse. M - her pal, her buddy, her bestie. deeply cares about what they think and what their opinions are. F - very, very protective of them. will fight god for them with nothing but a teaspoon if it may so be. A - she has a lot of respect for, but doesn't mind taking opportunities to annoy them because they're fun to annoy.
Dinah: likes and trusts all members of the team, no questions asked. the trusting part came before, obviously, because her amma trusts them so she trusts them. specifically, A - is in love with them; used to be kinda mad about their attraction towards them but cannot help but love the person that A truly is. F - light of her life, her ride-or-die, her home skillet biscuit and if anyone ever tried them, they are to let her know because they're her everything. N - never forgets the warmth with which N treated them from the get-go. genuinely likes the person that N is; has a lot of respect for them and seeks their thoughts on everything. M - has a kinda odd relationship with them where she likes them but also desperately wants their approval but not in a very obvious way.
Arzoo: grew to like and trust everyone in the team with not much help from their association with Rebecca, though she wasn't entirely too suspicious of them to begin with, either. (i am procrastinating the fuck out of playing Arzoo x M's full route in book 3 so my response will reflect that but-) specifically, M - is in a weird space with them rn. she is definitely aware of the fact that she feels very deeply for them but what does she really mean to them? N - kindred spirits in more ways than one. trusts them (with her heart, mostly) the most. deeply values their presence in her life. F - very sibling vibes. her heart immediately bursts with love for F because how could it not, honestly. A - respects them but really wishes they had more tact because it puts her off sometimes.
Nimah: like Arzoo, Nimah has grown to trust the team. she used to be used to be quietly suspicious of the team and didn't actively voice it because they seemed to help her get her job done, really, so... (i am also procrastinating the fuck out of playing Nimah x F's full route in book 3 so my response will reflect that but-) specifically, F - oh, so in love with them, will blurt it out someday. F is her first ever relationship and she sure got lucky immediately. A - just Gets Them. absolutely gets them and will really fight someone for them. N - feels an odd kind of protectiveness towards them, mainly because of how helpless they are with her no. 1 strength, tech. would totally hold them in her two hands and keep them safe in her pocket if she could. M - another person that she just Gets. seems to be in some sort of a respectable understanding with them, where you wouldn't immediately be able to tell that they're also friendly towards each other.
17. How did they join the Police?
Mona: Mona had a liking for psychology & criminal psychology, particularly, seemed to pique her interest. so she got herself a degree in criminology. there's also this sense of duty to serve & protect her town and her people and joining the force just made sense.
Dinah: Dinah has always had a lot of love for the people in her town & for the town itself, and like Mona, she also has a sense of duty towards Wayhaven. it just felt like a good choice then, to her, to join the force.
Arzoo: Rook was Arzoo's hero. she grew up listening to stories of him from people in the town; everyone seemed to have a story about Rook. naturally, she idolises him. so, it was kind of a no-brainer when it came to choosing a career in the force.
Nimah: Nimah chose to volunteer in the community in the later years of school and developed this sense of community with the people at Wayhaven and took that spirit further by joining the force. it didn't hurt that the job let her truly test her mind and put it to use better than most other jobs.

Step 1. Prepare your ingredients, heat source and equipment as directed.
Step 2. Cook the sausage. You’ll need to fully cook the sausage in a large skillet, as it cooks, break it up into crumbles.
Step 3. Add the flour. Keep stirring the pot as you slowly add the all-purpose flour to the sausage. You want to cook out the flour taste and pasty texture before moving on the the next step.
Step 4. Add the milk. Continue stirring as you slowly add the milk to the pan. You’ll want to bring the mixture to a boil, then, reduce the heat as you keep stirring.
Step 5. Simmer the sausage gravy. Bring the heat down and let the gravy thicken, occasionally stir the pot. When we want a “meatier” consistency, we keep the gravy really thick. If you want more gravy, just adjust more milk to create the amount of gravy you desire.

Step 6. Season. Add salt and pepper to the mixture, season to taste.
Step 7. Prepare biscuits. One biscuit serves one person, slice it in half and place on serving plate.
Camp Cooking Tip: To make this recipe really simple, we’re using pre-baked biscuits. You can make them at home or just pick up prepared biscuits from your grocery store. But, to make this breakfast recipe even better, make our easy Dutch Oven Biscuits right at your campsite.
Step 8. Serve. Top biscuit halves with sausage gravy and serve hot. This is one of those stick-to-your-ribs winter camping recipes that is great for cool mornings. Just make sure you serve it right away while the gravy is still hot.
What To Serve With This Recipe
Some campers enjoy a huge plate of this rich and hearty meal. Others, like a half order alongside over-easy or scrambled eggs.

Scaling Servings
If you need easy camping meals for large groups, keep this one on hand. This recipe easily scales up to feed huge crowds and it’s easy on the budget too!
Leftovers
Place leftovers in a plastic food storage bag, then, seal bag and place in refrigerator or cooler. Reheat in a pot over low heat and add a little milk it necessary for thinning. You can spoon it over more buttermilk biscuits or reinvent it for dinner by mixing with hot pasta to make a quick goulash-type of meal.
