incidentally my Official stance on AI is that it's actually too vague a term to have one cohesive opinion on and you have to specify a type of AI and what it's being used for to get a coherent opinion out of me. but currently I think generative AI always poses ethical issues re: plagiarism and LLMs in their current state should never be relied on to provide true, accurate information due to how shitty/non-existent their fact checking is and their tendency to make completely wrong answers sound very confident and convincing.
on the other hand, machine learning has far more legitimate applications. if you can make an algorithm that classifies trail camera photos at least as accurately as human beings do through citizen science, you can get a lot of good science done in less time and with a smaller budget, and things like that I believe will be a net benefit to humanity.
and just to be clear i will never intentionally share ai-generated art or writing unless it's to point out a scam or something, so let me know if i reblog ai slop by accident!
#gay and obscure nonsense#my first Real Paid Internship was classifying trail cam photos and while that sweet sweet min wage was nice to have#it was not the most enriching job in the world and did not really help my learning as much as i would have hoped#replacing that whole process with AI hopefully would have made room in the budget to hire students for more interesting lab tasks lol#also i recommend How AI Works: From Sorcery to Science by ronald kneusel for anyone who wants to understand different types of ai
