Ok so I started watching The Last Voyage of the Demeter (about halfway through rn) and all I'm saying is if you had to choose a Dracula-inspired horror movie revolving around characters besides the crew of light that came out in 2023. Pick this one
#scribe watch#the renfield movie#PROVIDED of course you can handle realistic gore and jumpscares and child and animal endangerment and movies where everybody dies#the last voyage of the demeter#but fr this movie is really good#so far of course there's always room for them to drop the ball but im confident#listen my relationship with the Renfield movie is extremely fraught and complicated because it is the biggest personal mixed bag on earth#like pros Renfield killing Dracula!!! Renfield gets to be on screen!!! gorgeous colours!!!!#cons: ableism. and the plot. is shit.#whats a man to do under these conditions#they should make a gothic lit movie about my favourite guys that is not a massive fumble in almost every way#but demeter is actually good! this movie rocks!!!#cinematography characters dialogue tone music editing#the gangs all here!!!#even the Dracula special effects look good!!! what a creepy little shit!!!!#THE SET DESIGN?? CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE DESIGN OF THE DEMETER because she went OFF#i have a couple of issues but i need to finish the movie to see how they're addressed#so far though i am having a great time#next on my watch list is lisa Frankenstein

would survive "what's your favourite scary movie" because id answer with a 20 minute question. under what criteria does one pick a favourite scary movie. do i get one per sub-genre or do i have to pick just one and explain myself. how far do we even stretch "horror". is silence of the lambs horror? i could say ive gotten similar levels of raw enjoyment out of midsommar as i did out of texas chainsaw massacre 2. if i pick one that's an "elevated horror", people might think im some kind of haughty snob, but if i pick a low budget campfest, you're going to think im stupid for enjoying low brow stuff. so on what do i base my decision. what IS my favourite scary movie? the one that makes me think about it the hardest, the one that jumpscared me the most times, the one i laughed at the most, the one that was the most poignant, the one i jerked it to,

Lover ; jungwon 정원 .
Lovers . bf!jungwon x fem!reader w. None step ? #766 M.recordings ! [ was supposed to post this a few hours ago but sorry i forgot ( gyuvin refrence ahaah ) ]
Syn. Lover jungwon and actions he does that makes you fold every time
ꕤ no matter how small this is but he loves to pick up shells with you from the beach you'll be on a trip with your friends and in the early morning you'll go sit on the beach a little, because it's always better and calming in the morning - like at 6 am or something - and he sees you putting on your jacket and he knows, he had to go with you! It's his job at this point.
When you see him running after you on the beach, he literally looks like a jumpscare. [ love you jungwon ]
"oh what are you doing here? I thought you were sleeping" you asked with a puzzled expression on your face.
"aren't you here to pick up shells?" he says as he shows the little container that has the words 'y/n and won's shells' on the front, he looks at you with sleepy eyes.
And you fall in love all over again from how cute he looks.
ꕤ you know how people collect pcs or pictures and such stuff?
Well he literally keeps Polaroids of you, every chance he gets, he just always has the camera in his backpack, like for what ?? TO TAKE PICS OF HIS LOVELY GIRL !!!
A sleepover? Pic, a date? Another pic, practice? Pic again, after a concert? GUESS WHAT. Another pic, I'm crying.
No cause he for real has a huge ass binder, and it's so pretty, in your favourite colour and it's decorated with pretty stuff and all.
Now guess what. He doesn't hide it from the boys, oh my lord.
He literally looks at them so many times, like he is WHIPPED!
"another picture?" You ask him, seeing how he's getting the camera from his bag.
He nods with a big grin, and you never said no to him, so you just pose, giving him your best smile, and he unconsciously smiles back.
How cute I wanna die.
ꕤ okay listen. First, Sunrise is better than sunset. Second. Watching the sunrise with won is a must.
It's honestly sickening, even tho watching the sunrise isn't like the most exciting thing, he always manages to make it one of your favourite days, saying something so special to you, or confessing to you how he was super in love with you for a long time before confessing, or accidentally telling you about the surprise he's making you for your anniversary, or just saying overly sweet stuff. Like okay king you can shut up now. (Sobbing)
"You wanna know something?" won asks you.
You were sitting on the beach while it was still dark, a few minutes till the sun completely rises.
Your head resting on his shoulders, and him playing with your hair.
You give him a hum, telling him you were listening.
"Sometimes I ask myself why I love you, and I never found an answer, it was starting to frustrated me, but then I realised that I wouldn't want to love you for a reason, what if the reason suddenly disappears, I'm scared I won't love you like I do now, so for as long as i breath and as long as you're next to me, I want to love you forever and unconditionally" he says, calm as ever as if he didn't just make your mind race.
You stare at him, eyes blown wide. And heart nearly jumping out of your chest.
ꕤ this boy. This is kind of similar to the jake one. This boy will always have your favourite snacks in a drawer in his room. Like HE NEVER RUNS OUT, so whenever you're having a sleepover or such, he has your favourite snacks just because.
"Man I wish I brought snacks on my way here" you say with a huff, while searching for a movie to watch with your boyfriend, you would've gone to the store, but with how far away from the dorm it was, you turned down that thought.
"What do you mean, I have snacks" he said as he went to his night stand, opening the last drawer to see it filled with all your favourite stuff, you stared at him.
"Won oh my god, you don't even like most of these stuff" you look at him with a pout.
"Yeah silly, they're for you not me, take whatever you want." He said, going back to laying on the bed.
You gave him a kiss as a thank you and ever since then he always has some snacks in his drawer, I mean, he can't say no to a kiss now, can he?

I’d much rather have her fearbook doll#that one dress is to me far superior than any of these clothing pieces#a pass from me which SUCKS I was SO looking forward to this theme#it should be RIGHT UP MY ALLEY#*correction Draculaura’s hair is not brown it’s like a desaturated magenta#a colour I think I would like if it wasn’t drowned out by all the Super Bright pinks and reds

Okay, I have to share this story because it was a hilarious experience, I'm not sure if the ask box will let me get through it in one message, bear with me.
So I'm scrolling through IWTV fanfiction on AO3, reading some of the more recent fics, and I find one fic that I really love. They've really got the Daniel tone and essence down, I'm laughing to myself on the couch. I decide to wait and read the fic out loud with my partner because when a fanfic is really good we like to share it. While I'm waiting for my partner to get back from canning peaches, I check the author's profile briefly and I'm like 'oh shit they write for The Untamed,' which is cool, that was our last fandom that we were super into.
My partner gets home-- I excitedly tell them that I've found a new fic for us to read and they'd better buckle in because it's got a hell of a vibe and they're not even ready. My partner is like 'oh hell yeah' and gets out their crochet project. (we're in our mid twenties I don't know why this particular day makes us sound like we're in our eighties)
Anyways, I tell them that the author also does MDZS content so we can check that out after our IWTV fic and then we start reading the story and it's very good-- they have to hold up a hand to make me stop reading because they're cry-laughing, and all is well. And then suddenly I go.... wait. Wait, hang on. Hang on, I have to check this person's profile. This is a little too familiar.
And my partner says "Wait. Is this the MDZS writer-" and I say "I don't know I'm checking, hang on" and then I look up and we make eye contact and I'm like "oh my god babe it's the Meng Yao writer."
Essential Background: Meng Yao is my favourite MDZS character and it's hard to find good fics for him. A couple of years ago, my partner was reading the HOA fic and gushing about it, I was insisting that 'an act too often neglected' was simply the best MDZS fic that could ever be written, and we were absolutely shocked to discover they had an author in common, and then a while later there was ANOTHER fic I started reading out loud to my partner because it was That Good and it turned out to ALSO be the same author, so we just started calling them 'The Meng Yao writer' aka the only person we trust to write him.
Basically what I'm saying is that whenever either of us reads anything you've written, it's so goddamn good that we end up sharing it with each other and not realizing that it's the Same Author every time. So. I'm buying one of your books for my partner's next birthday I guess because you're clearly just That Good. Thank you for the multiple years of enjoyable fics and the consistent joy you're bringing to our household. Also I want to eat up your Daniel Molloy characterization with a knife and fork. Thank you.
This is the most delightful ask that it is possible to get. I am giggling and kicking my feet and grinning ear to ear. This is so sweet.
This is also so fucking funny to me. "The Meng Yao writer" ahhh my legacy. The arguing over which fic is better until the moment you realize they're both mine. The way you keep finding my fics and independently discovering every time that they're Finally Some Good Fucking Food without having learned my AO3 name at some point during that process until the third or fourth time i have jumpscared you with it dfghjkkdfghjkfghj Ariaste/Alexandra Rowland is everywhere, they're in your walls, they're currently standing right behind you actually ghjklwwghjwkl;
BLESS YOU AND YOUR PARTNER, your relationship sounds honestly ideal. I hope you keep reading fics and crocheting together forever.
Also very flattered that you're taking a swing with my original works! Thank you!! They are all set in the same world but they're usually (so far) about different characters, so as you read more of them you're going to start catching some fun cross-references between them. My thirteenth book comes out next month, so here's some good places to start based on the fics you've pointed out that you've particularly liked:
if you want more laughing-until-you-are-crying-and-have-to-stop-because-you-genuinely-cannot-breathe content (a la "different for vampires", HOAverse (Meng Yao and the Board of the Homeowners Association), or any of my other high comedic fics), start with RUNNING CLOSE TO THE WIND. It's about queer pirates accidentally stealing and trying to find a buyer for the most valuable secret in the world, and standing up against institutional hegemony. Also horny sea serpents. Also a plot-relevant cake competition. If you cried laughing at any of my fics in the past, you are not prepared for what I'm about to do to you here.
if you are enjoying the Snarky Old Man content that is Daniel Molloy and his disquisitions on the nature of storytelling and truth-seeking in "different for vampires", go for A CONSPIRACY OF TRUTHS, which has more of both of those things. It's about an elderly wandering storyteller who has been imprisoned on charges of witchcraft, treason, and brazen impertinence, and the stories he tells to rescue himself from the situation. And the corrupt government he accidentally knocks over along the way, whoops
If you liked the yearning, sweeping romance of the main pairing in "an act too often neglected", try A TASTE OF GOLD AND IRON, which is about an Exquisitely Beautiful Prince with a chronic anxiety disorder and his Stoic Beefy Bodyguard as they attempt to track down a coin counterfeiting ring that could bring down their whole economy, and also they fall in love along the way.
My next book, YIELD UNDER GREAT PERSUASION (out in September), is also great for that sweeping romance vibe, but preorders are not quite up yet! If you are looking for a cozy M/M romantasy about a prickly, grouchy tea shop owner, his childhood nemesis who he's been fucking since they were teenagers, and the hard, unglamorous journey of personal growth toward self-love and self-forgiveness to be able to accept love from other people... Watch this space, get on my Discord server (where i am these days constantly ranting about IWTV in a dedicated thread), or sign up for my newsletter linked on my website
Thank you again for the entirely LOVELY ask, I will be beaming all day. Please give your partner a high five from me, I hope the two of you enjoy the books (and if you want to get autographed copies for their birthday, hit me up in DMs and we can get that sorted out)!
Also, there will be a new chapter of "different for vampires" going up in the next hour or so :D

𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙬𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣’𝙨 𝙙𝙖𝙮
ꜰᴀᴍɪʟʏ ꜰᴏʀᴍᴀᴛɪᴏɴꜱ ᴇxᴛʀᴀ
A/N: hello it is i pixie emerged from hibernation to drop you this month late extra of our favourite family and then crawl back into my lair.
cw: the usual swearing, mentions of sexism, menstruation and female reproductive system, suggestive ending.
“No way! See I heard it had something to do with that little twerp from the Zen’in clan. Navel - or nacho or whatever the fuck his name is.”
“Ugh - why does that not even surprise me. He’s such a shithead, like you should have seen the look on his face when my mom interjected at a Jujutsu higher ups event she muscled her way into. Honestly it’s gotta be like - microscopic. Oh and it’s Navel now - never using Naoya again.”
Shoko and you had just been out on a girls day out, just the two of you - a visit to the arcade, lunch, some shopping and an exhibition on the human body. It had to be done, girl time was integral to maintaining a sense of sanity when the other 50% of the friend group was G.S squared.
The gossip had continued back to the dorms, where you both stood holding bags of snacks and the days haul while you put in the key code.
The door swung open and there stood Satoru Gojo, and Suguru Geto - both decked in pink party hats and shouting ‘surprise!’ (okay, gojo was shouting - geto was just saying).
“Jesus Christ!”
“What the fuck?!”
The camaraderie that came from the jumpscare resulted in Shoko and you both swearing and jumping in surprise at the sudden appearance.
Before either of you could react any further to it, long arms still a bit unaware of his strength, tug you both into a bonecrushing hug.
Shoko twists Satoru’s nipple through his shirt so he shrieks and lets you both you (you hide your disappointment).
You look at Geto, who winks with a devilish smirk and turn to the wall where the table is laid out with both you and Shoko’s favourites and a giant handmade poster on the wall with “Happy International Women’s Day” in large bubble writing.
Suddenly the confused silence was broken as a cheerful voice started singing, and was then accompanied by a louder Satoru.
“Happy InternationalWomen’sDay to you, Happy InternationalWomen’sDay to you! Happy InternationalWomen’sDay Shoko and Y/N, Happy InternationalWomen’sDay to you!” echoed with far too many syllables in the tune of ‘happy birthday’ across the room as Haibara emerged from the kitchen, with a strange red blob shaped cake in his hands followed by a very unhappy looking Nanami Kento.
The cake was placed on the table as you and Shoko looked at it in confusion - it was a red colour frosting on a cake shaped like a weird triangle with two squiggles coming from the sides joined to two cupcakes. For the life of you - and Shoko too if the look on her face was anything to go by - you had no idea what the cake was meant to be.
Suguru’s smirk was unnerving as he looked between you both.
“Shoko-senpai and Y/N-senpai! So strong, and powerful, and clever and pretty! Not that being pretty is important for being a woman - it’s just a bonus - not that it’s not great that you’re pretty, because it is, like it’s amazing! If I was into girls I’d definitely be into you both! But it’s not what makes you amazing!” Haibara says, clapping his hands.
“The strongest, most powerful, clever and cunning and most beautiful girls! We couldn’t do any of this without you. Well, I could -” Satoru starts.
“Satoru.” Geto warns.
“Okay, maybe I sometimes need backup and you girls are definitely the best choices after Suguru!” He finishes.
“That was barely complimentary.” Nanami scowls.
“We love and respect you both!” Satoru says.
“Some love you more than others…” Suguru smirks.
“Equally! Equally! We love you all equally and in a very friendly, respectful, and caring way!” Satoru says, kicking Suguru’s shin.
This whole time, you and Shoko had just been staring between them all.
“What the fuck…” Shoko whispers.
“Ditto…” You pipe in.
Satoru pops pink party poppers in both your faces and then Suguru uses the distraction to place a party hat on both your heads.
“Shoko - you save our asses, sometimes literally on an almost daily basis. Your no nonsense attitude and ability to care for us all and unflappable nature is a core reason we’re all here and we would be lost without you. You’re also underhandedly funny, and we’re very thankful to have you in our lives.” Suguru says, smooth and steady as always, and elbows a fidgeting Satoru.
“Y/N! You - are so awesome! You’re smart, and funny, and kind, and you make sure we’re all safe and strong and it’s so cool when you kick ass and I love exorcising with you - and your cursed technique is so cool and you work so hard and I don’t really respect many people but I definitely respect you! You’re also beautiful but that’s not important - not that you’re not like, importantly pretty! Because I think it’s very important that everyone knows you’re so pretty!” Came a gushing scramble of words from the usually overconfident Satoru - because complimenting the one person who has ever made him nervous was a bit of a shock to the system of the Honoured One.
For a moment, you and Shoko just stood in bewildered silence - still holding hands from when you walked in.
Before you look at each other, and simultaneously double over in hysterical laughter - clutching onto each other for support.
“This was so fucking strange, but I love it - we love it. Thank you boys, for this. It’s really appreciated.”
“That’s because we - appreciate you!” Gojo says, pointing between the four boys.
You hug all the boys, while Shoko inspects the cake on the table.
“Is this a Magikarp or something?” She asks, head tilted as she examines the red blob.
“It’s a uterus!” Haibara exclaims.
After trying to figure it out - the cupcakes where the ovaries should be and the triangle the uterus itself… it makes slightly more sense - but maybe International Women’s Day would be spent with an anatomy lesson from Shoko.
“Kid, listen - today we are going to be extra respectful of our girls, yeah?” Satoru says, opening the bag of pastries he had bought for breakfast the night before after Megumi talked him out of attempting to make pancakes. Megumi nodded, and placed the two bouquets of flowers on the two chairs his mom and sister usually sat in.
“They’re both very, very important to us. Sometimes, kid - the world is really shit for girls. A lot more than it is for us. Things that might be a bit difficult for us - not for me, but others - would be really hard for girls.”
“Periods.” Megumi grimaces, but nods solemnly.
“Yeah. But other things too. Like sometimes girls get less money for the same jobs, and people try to tell them how to look or how to act - or, no joke, tell them what they can do with their own body! Even simple stuff, like sometimes it’s dangerous for girls to go certain places, or people might expect less from them just because they’re girls.”
“Even for Mama?” Megumi asks, confused because from his perspective, the woman who has raised him the past 2 years is the most powerful (second to Gojo, but don’t tell him that) and formidable person he knows, and the kindest and funniest.
"Sometimes especially for her. Y/N is really strong, yeah?" Gojo asks, taking out a jug of juice and placing it on the table, before scribbling on one of your cinnimaroll post it notes and sticking it on the jug.
"Yeah." Megumi nods.
"Do you think that's scary?" Gojo asks.
"I think it's cool." The boy shrugs.
"Some men don't. They think she doesn't deserve it, or she is too weak to hold such a power - did you know your mama had more disciplinary meetings at school than I did?" Gojo says as he switches the kettle on.
"Why? Yaga-san said you were a nightmare student." Megumi is shocked at the thought.
"I was. But what's the difference between me and your mom?" Gojo says, pulling down 4 mugs. One with two puppies, one with the Winx Club characters on it, another with ‘Daddy Cool’ in big obnoxious yellow writing and the last with the BTS logo in purple.
"She isn't annoying."
"Okay, rude."
"She's a girl."
"Yep. That's why. Your - your Uncle Suguru was special grade too - and he and I did some crazy shit - and we got slaps on the wrist mostly, but your mom was late with a mission report one time because she was sick and they gave her extra work for a month. Aunty Koko too."
"But why?"
"Because weak men fear powerful women."
"That's dumb."
"Super dumb."
“Something girls in my class get notes sent home even though they didn’t do anything really bad.” Megumi scowls.
“That’s why we gotta fight to make sure we’re not part of the problem, and stop boys who are.” Satoru says, placing the heated pastries on the table.
“Like fighting them?”
“Sometimes they’re not even worth the effort, kid. Just stick up for girls and never treat them as anything less than a boy - okay? There’s shit girls deal with that we will never go through or understand.”
“Oh, like the stuff you and mama talked about with the girls my age in the Zen’in clan?”
“Your cousins, yeah.”
“And why the higher ups are dicks to mama’s family?”
“Exactly! You’re so smart you have to have gotten it from me.” Gojo smiles, hands on hips in his frilly apron.
“That’s not even possible.”
“Yes it is, I made it possible.” Satoru’s just winding the 9 year old up at this point.
“You’re impossible.” Megumi growls.
“Your hair’s impossible!” Satoru blows a raspberry.
“A slow start to the day is impossible, apparently.” Came your voice from where you stood leaning against the archway to the kitchen, a sleepy smile on your face in your fluffy blue robe and bunny slippers. Tsumiki padded up behind you, much brighter and a definite morning person.
“Happy international women’s day, my amazing girlie pops!” Satoru claps and scoops you both into the air with ease, giggles resounding through the room.
Megumi just scrunches his nose, staring bewildered at where the man gets his energy.
“Thank you, ‘Toru. You’re very sweet to do this.” You kiss him with a smile and walk to sit down at the table.
“Not as sweet as that a-” Satoru starts, but is swiftly cut off my Megumi’s disgusted groan, unable for his guardians flirting just yet.
You sit down and sniff the bouquet on your chair, delighting in the assortment of your favourite flowers, as Tsumiki does the same beside you.
“Happy women’s day, mama and Tsumiki.” Megumi nods, quiet but clear.
“Thanks, ‘gumi!” Tsumiki smiles, ruffling her younger brother’s spiky black hair.
“Thanks, sweet boy.” You wink at him.
As you go to pour yourself some juice, you can’t stop the giggle at the stick note on the carton.
‘Respect Women Juice’
“Yo, mini-me, did you grab the Doriyaki on the way home?” A 44 year old Satoru asks his 17 year old son who’s entering the kitchen.
“Yeah, I got extra too because ‘Rai’s been crabby so I think she’s due shark week.” The boy says, snatching a mochi from the box before Satoru could.
“Your mom too…” Satoru’s head turns sharply.
“Oh shit.”
“It’s happened…”
“We can do this - dad.” His son says with a straight, serious face as they both examine the calender.
“We just gotta be the best husband, son and brother ever.” Satoru nods.
“Well… that won’t be hard.” Akio smirks, only 2 inches shorter than his dad and growing.
“Of course it won’t. We’re the strongest.” Satoru says, doing his ridiculously intricate secret handshake with his son.
A moment later, two sets of feet pad down the stairs.
43 year old you and your 14 year old daughter walk into the room, your arms snugly wrapped around your little girl’s shoulders.
You knew what to expect on March 8th every year by now, it had been 25 years of it.
“Happy international women’s day, my incredible wife and mind blowing daughter.” Satoru says with a smile and open arms spanning half the kitchen.
“25 years of this and it still gives me butterflies, thank you ‘Toru.” You say, pressing a kiss to your husbands jaw by dragging his collar down to meet you.
“Thanks dad, thanks ‘Kio!” Mirai claps and hugs them both.
“Thank you, mochi.” You say, also dragging your too-tall son’s collar down to press a kiss to his cheek.
As you all sit down to breakfast, and chatter aimlessly, Satoru pulls you to sit on his lap as always.
“Oh, ‘Rai, I’m gonna go into the mall to pick up my new Nikes too - do you want to come?” Akio says, and even though this is a regular occurrence - it warms your heart every time to see that your two babies aren’t only siblings, but also best friends - genuinely enjoying each other’s company and actively seeking each other out. Something tells you that will never change, either.
“Sounds good, do you still want to try that new boba place? The one with the cat logo?” Mirai says, googling the opening times and showing it to her brother.
“Bring me back a brown sugar milk tea?” You plead, the same look on your face as when 17 year old you got excited for boba dates with Satoru.
“Course, Mama. Papa, do you want one?” Mirai asks, her long snowy white hair bushy and wild from bed head inherited from you.
Satoru smiles, hand rubbing circles against your hip as Mirai types his order into her notes.
“Is Aunty Koko still coming over tonight?” Akio asks, looking up at you with eyes just like his father’s.
“She is, I think Uncle Cho too. I was thinking we’d order pizza.” You raise an eyebrow.
“Yes, mom - you actually have mind reading technique I swear.” He pats your head as if you weren’t his mother.
The two kids wander to get dressed, leaving you still sipping coffee curled against your husbands broad chest.
Your phone dings with a notification from the family group chat, and Satoru nudges you to open it.
A selfie, clearly taken by Yuuji, face scarred and older but beaming expression unchanged - featuring a taller, sharper 31 year old Megumi with a toddler in each arm, looking out over the ocean at sunset.
“They seem bigger every time I see them.” Satoru laughs.
“The twins or Yuuji and Megs?” You giggle.
“Both. Still can’t believe ‘Gumi had the audacity to grow up so much. I specifically told him to stop.”
“Eh? Satoru - imagine how I feel! Both our sons are at least a foot taller than me! Try talking to a kid when you need a step stool to look them in the eye!” You poke his cheek.
“Nawh, poor baby. You’re as pocket sized as the day I met that pretty girl holding a ladybug waiting for introduction at Jujutsu Tech. Gonna carry you around in my pocket.” Your husband teases, squishing your frowning cheeks.
“Yeah, yeah - alright daddy long legs.”
“Seriously though - we should take another trip to Malaysia, get Cho to stay with the kids. We can ask the boys where they stayed, looks pretty as hell.”
“Let’s do it, pretty boy.” You kiss the corner of his lips.
“You know… the kids are gone all afternoon…” He says, large hands squeezing your waist.
“They are… and it just so happens I just bought something very, very pretty to try on.” You raise an eyebrow, biting your lip.
“Oh? A private fashion show?” He says, thumb on your lower lip.
“Just for my ‘Toru.”
“Invite really fuckin’ accepted, princess.”

Mcr headcanon: y/n (gn) is starring in a horror movie and they’re character d!es in the movie.
Like they d!e in a HORRIBLE way, like horrifying way, how do the boys react to it?
TW: mentions of a fictional character's death, mentions of food, mentions of jealousy
Gerard
I'm literally on my way back from a Yosakoi festival after getting up at 3am (it's 9pm currently, I had 4 hours of sleep), and my feet have been in soaking wet shoes for the past 10 hours (I think they're starting to develop gills) because the rainy season decided to made a comeback and they had to cancel the fireworks because of that (at a festival that's called a "fire carnival" of all events), and you're coming with this? Not formatted properly because I'm literally sitting in a bus, that's driving through the Kyūshū night while I have glitter stones stuck to my face and two braids with Yukata-hair-accessories on my head.
WC: ???
Assuming Gerard knows what's gonna happen, he's probably looking forward to it. He's sitting in your living room, watching the screen attentively, the snacks you were sharing long forgotten as his eyes follow the action. He's leant forward, ellbows on knees, asking "oh, is this where it happens?" in an almost gleeful voice. Depending on how sudden the scene happens, he either gets jumpscared or just follows the story like the most interesting lecture. Either way he ends up laughing, and leaning back into the couch once it's over, wrapping an arm around your shoulder and kissing your forehead. "Well done," he'll tell you with his lips pressed to your forehead.
Would he watch that movie again: sure! It's a good movie! Next time he'd like to discuss the foreshadowing of the ending through the use of colours and the weather in the early scenes of the movie.
Mikey
Mikey loves horror movies, and that his s/o is staring in one is just a major plus to him. He has a lot of experience with horro movies, so he catches on pretty early that your character is going to die, even if you didn't tell him. He would low-key get excited about it. A voice in the back of his head tells him that 15 or 20 years ago the idea of watching a character that has the face of a beloved person die on screen would have terrified him, even though he was very well able to tell fiction from reality, but now he just enjoys the action, as he feels you cuddled into his side. He might even go as far as offer ideas for even more gruesome deaths, or ways to make the character's death even more painful for the audience.
Would he watch that movie again: absolutely! Has the potential to become a new favourite of his.
Side note: my seatmate just fell asleep on my shoulder. I shall not move until she wakes up.
Ray
Ray would generally be pretty chill about it. He grew up with horror movies too, and he is used to seeing you on screen, so he isn't all too bothered by it, but probably more bothered than Gerard. He doesn't show it all too openly, only pulls you in after the scene is over and praises your work. The only indication that he is more affected by it than he lets on is when he pulls you in a little tighter that night, holding you close to his warm body with his nose buried against your neck. (Seatmate just tried sitting up, and failed. Head is back on my shoulder.)
Would he watch that movie again: he wouldn't necessarily bring it up by himself. If he wants to see you act, there are other movies you're in, where you get a happy end, or at least don't die (he prefers watching those over watching your character die, even if he has to suffer through watching you kiss another actor or actress in front of the camera. It always makes him a bit more self-conscious watching you kiss those perfect people, even if it's not real, and he get a bit more clingy than usual for a few days afterwards.)
Seatmate sat up again, is leaning towards the other side now.
Frank
Frank plays is cool, but isn't. Like the others he has seen enough horror movies and has seen you enough on screen. He's even okay with your characters making out with other characters on screen, even though he does have a (well controlled) possessive side that usually tries to act up when some person is hitting on you. (Seatmate's head is back on my shoulder. She's so cute.) So he knows he shouldn't feel that pit in his stomach opening, it's just fiction after all, you're right here next to him, babbling about how hot the studio was that day while playing with his fingers. Still he closes his eyes at the last shot showing your character staring up right past the camera with lifeless eyes. He has watched your characters die on screen before, but something about the way this is portrayed hits different. "Whoa, that looked pretty real," he'd chuckle, his voice a little more shaky than he'd like to admit, "rad acting there!" Luckily you know him well enough to see through his facade. You know he's self-conscious about his feelings towards this scene, so you don't address it directly, but you scoot a little closer to him at night, and he takes the invitation, and wrappes you in his arms (which is rare, since he usually needs a little bit of space to fall asleep).
Would he watch that movie again: only if you asked and he couldn't come up with an excuse not to watch it. He'd rather not see this last shot of your face again.
And since nobody asked, you get a picture of our banner

quick and dirty game review: KILLER FREQUENCY
it's really good!! why?
it's all your favourite 80s/onwards slasher flicks rolled into one
the premise is ropey as hell but it's self-aware enough to know that and make it FUN
the references are gonna be really obvious to horror connoisseurs but tbh for me they were subtle enough that they weren't overpowering the experience; it's not just fanservice held together by gaffer tape and string
there's one (1) jumpscare right at the beginning, so be aware of that, but it didn't send me running for the hills and while i haven't finished the game yet, it's fair to say the rest of the game does not rely on cheap thrills and scares
that said, the fact that there's a crouch mechanic deeply worries me
but still: without giving too much away, you experience the game by manning the radio station and taking calls from people being pursued by a serial killer. there's no narration or visuals, the tension relies entirely on voice acting and sound design -- and i think they did a spectacular job with that
there were so many moments where i (and chat, i was streaming it) was on the edge of my seat
the puzzles are absolutely doable but still really satisfying when you work them out; and there's timers only on some dialogue choices, so you have enough time to work things out in steps -- also makes it easier/more fun to let chat help hehe
when you do fail, you don't feel railroaded or tricked, which is important, though once or twice a lack of information can be a little frustrating because you're just gonna have to go with your gut
the characters have really interesting backstories, i can't wait to find out more 👀
according to the devs, the dialogue and backstories were all written collaboratively across the team, and the game somewhat responds to how well you do in keeping people alive
there's also clues throughout the story so you can try and put it together as you go -- delighted to find out what's the biggest red herring
devs say all players will get a satisfying resolution re: the killer's identity, but players who do well get a more complete picture -- raising the incentive for multiple playthroughs
there's moments of instant karma that are just *chef's kiss*
the environmental storytelling at the radio station ohmygod
is something lgbt happening to Peggy 👀👀
the dialogue choices match up with the tone of what your character actually says, so it's easy to mould his personality a little bit (and the bits where they get creative with punctuation to help convey that tone are really funny)
i'm about halfway through and so far nothing seems overplayed; instead the game just fully commits to the bit without being obnoxious
mechanics are simple: play records, play ad tapes, take calls, and occasionally run through the station for clues
sadly, you can't photocopy your butt
BUT you can shoot hoops from your desk (with paper balls) and the game tracks how many you got
if you're a horror movie or game fan, if this sounds like you'd enjoy it, i can only recommend it! i'm not super good with horror or survival games, but i had an absolute blast with this. here's a couple of screenshots so you can see the aesthetic they're working with:
it's got that cell-shaded telltale look -- easy on the eyes, colourful. and the carpets. my god

Watching GTLive to steal headcanons for Ness was the best decision I've made.
So far, I've got:
Ness loves playing hard games,
BUT will always yell and jump about when he's mad. Sometimes, Mike walks into him doing a little after-diner late-night gaming and Ness is sat with his head in his hands sighing really hard ("Ness the couches are for sitting not for CLIMBING.")
He's got a huge knowledge of pop culture. He sometimes makes references Mike doesn't understand, and he takes like 10 minutes to thoroughly explain it, and by the end Mike still sort of doesn't understand but he just supports him
cont. but Ness also has a lot of nerdy science knowledge too. He likes to share the worst facts he knows with Mike :)
His podcast episodes have "Witty Banter" portions at the start before he gets into the complete mood shift of a topic. When he invites Mike onto the podcast, the entire episode is basically the witty banter (and the comments are all "you and Mike have amazing chemistry!! bring him on more often!!!!" little do they know.....)
Ness' Theatre Era.
The almost colourful vocabulary of Ness. He censors himself the best he can (especially around Abby) but sometimes he'll let out a little swear and Mike GASPS SO LOUD JUST TO EMPHASISE IT AND MAKE IT A HUGE DEAL. Sometimes Vanessa joins too just for the bit. He gets very embarrassed.
Also side note can we please appreciate the hilarious ways Mat censors himself?? its so funny because you can always tell what he wants to say, he just doesn't. (except for when he does and its a jumpscare)
Ness and his stupid ass laugh. Its so contagious that Mike laughs too. Mike isn't much of a laugher, so when Ness sees him laugh, it makes him laugh more too. (Mat's laugh is one of my favourites, so I'm projecting it onto Ness)
"So... how long do you think you could go without shower?" "Ness what the fu-"
Ness has a recording closet. He lives in a small apartment space, so the only spot he can think of to record is... his closet.
He talks with his hands a lot, and sometimes when hes trying to think hard he closes his eyes. Mike also likes to jokingly copy his movements when hes particularly expressive but it's kind of grown on him
okay this went on longer than i expected but I'll update with more eventually (bcs im on a GTLive binge watch and I'm currently on Mario Odyssey and i might do Kindergarten next because its a CLASSIC)

MY TOP 10 CATS LIST
* this is an assortment, not a ranking; I don't like being forced to pick favourites
Relevant: animals, monster hunter, red dwarf, delicious in dungeon, heartstopper
Cats chosen for various, sometimes drastically different, reasons. This is like, a really stupid list to make, admitedly.
1. Izutsumi
Comment: She is a cat, and not happy about it. Izutsumi has some really funny panels/shots, although there are more serious narrative aspects to her character too, among others the nature of her soul and mind as a werebeast. Props to Ryōko Kui for cooking up some really interesting worldbuilding concepts in Dunmeshi in general.
2. Jaguar
Comment: The muscly, meaty jaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag.... Honestly just a really cool cat in vibes. They are also really adaptable, and it shows in the range of places they inhabited historically, not just presently. Also possibly hoping for reintroductions in the US. I really like wildcats in general, but jaguars really strike me among big cats.
3. Charlie Spring
Comment: Reportedly catlike, has meowed at least once. Not the main thing that strikes me about him though. I think he is a well realised and compelling character in the comic and series. Admitedly he is not the most relatable in his experiences, but he is far from unlikeable. Charlie and Nick are also a really sweet couple.
4. Xenosmilus hodsonae (no common name)
Comment: The maddest (real) cat. This is one of the sabretoothed cats found in North America during the Pleistocene, alongside the famous Smilodon and Homotherium. Unlike these two, Xenosmilus is seemingly limited in distrubution, only known insofar from Florida iirc. It had insane teeth; the huge incisors stand out especially. It was also very heavily built among cats, and likely used its paws to wrestle down prey. Gnarly beast, love it.
5. Barioth
Comment: 90 screeching tons of cat-shaped wyvern. It has a lot of really weird details and cool design influences which I really like. Barioth is a very good fight imo, or at least one with considerable potential. It's also got a sick title for its BGM track: the Subzero White Knight. Overall, one of my favourite monsters in the whole of Monster Hunter.
6. Cat
Comment: A cat 3 million years in the making. My favourite Red Dwarf character, with Lister coming at a close second. I especially like his portrayal in the first two seasons. He just roams about yowling and doing all sorts of random bullshit. Basically, the worst parts of a cat in human form (though, he is a LITERAL cat by descent so... he's a cat.)
6. Flat headed cat
Comment: I found out about this little freak this year, and I love it. Shoutout to the other Prionailurus cats, who tend to look less weird overall. Interestingly it is semiaquatic and eats fish. For further clarification, this is indeed an adult cat shown here; they are one of the smallest species out there.
8. Pete
Comment: The least "catlike" cat. I assumed he was like a bulldog or something when I was little, but cat does make sense (yknow, cat and mouse, with one towering over the other). I like how ugly, clumsy and brutish he is, but at the same time amusingly pathetic in some situations. I have only fairly recently begun looking into Mickey Mouse shorts; I mostly grew up with Donald Duck comics.
9. Jones
Comment: The only other cat on this list in space. He is one of the few pleasant things in Alien, as the film is quite grisly otherwise. Fortunately, he is safe. I really don't have much to say about him given his fairly small role beyond a few jumpscare antics. I moreso just like Alien because it is such a multilayered and interesting film.
10. Eurasian lnx
Comment: My country's only wildcat. Lynx are pretty peculiar looking with their ear tufts, bobtail and long legs. They aren't huge among cats as a whole, but their size is still distinctive. At the same time they are normal in a sense because of their widespreadness. Btw they climb, which is something I remember every now and again and become amazed at.
HONORABLE MENTION: Felynes
Forgot about these guys as a whole, somehow, but I like them. They are a very distinct part of Monster Hunter, and pretty charming overall. Also not able to embed more images, sadly.

All my rambling thoughts while watching TADC episode 3
Watched this episode with a friend when it came out and I have! Feelings!! So here’s my rough approximation of some of my thoughts on it while watching!
Spoilers ahead!
——— • Love the gang hanging out together
• “And Zooble turns straight!” JAX NO
• “What do YOU, the VIEWERS, think it is?” Mm. Don’t like that. • Every time “Today’s Adventure” plays I just grin like an idiot, I’m SO happy it’s in every episode
• Caine being desperate to create an adventure that Zooble will go on is a really interesting concept
• I miss Gummigoo ;^;
• OHH THE LIGHTING IN THIS EPISODE. THE VIBES!! THE HAUNTED MANSION!!! IMMACULATE. I cannot possibly gush about it enough.
• “I’m not really a fan of horror, and I don’t really handle jumpscares that well.” She’s just like me
• Ohhh the ghost is so cute 🥺 what a little guy-oh, whelp, goodbye
• RAGATHA’S HORRIFIED FACE IS SENDING ME
• Oh that’s nightmare fuel :D
• “You know, I’m starting to think…” oh. oh that’s-that’s the end of the sentence.
• “Well, this is some rather inconvenient lore placement” I love Kinger
• THE 2D EYES
• Them being fixated on the fly is so funny to me for no reason
• NEW SLEEP PARALYSIS DEMON JUST DROPPED
• “You look beautiful, honey”
• “UUUUUP!!” AHDAJGDA
• Zooble therapy time!
• Oh no,, sad therapy time
• Aw Zooble :( dang
• Caine is 100% listening to Zooble when they tell him to ‘just forget it’ and I don’t think they realize that. Poor Zooble
• OH GOD OH NO CAINE. He’s just as trapped as the rest of them
• “I ended up shooting the love of my life” Kinger’s face here worries me
• “Okay I won’t” the humour in this show is so good man
• HE DID NOT MISS
• Kinger protecting Pomni, I love them actually
• “w h a t” *WHEEEEEZE*
• THE GIRLS HAVING A TEA PARTY IS SO GOOD. I love Martha, she seems so chill
• Jax being tied up made me laugh really hard. Yes, good, keep it that way. He deserves it.
• Tbh Caine putting in a pacifist route is more than I expected him to do
• “How’s your wife, Kinger?” THE AGONIZED SCREECH I LET OUT, OUUUGHHH MY HEART-RUDE AND UNCALLED FOR, ACTUALLY
• “Seven years of computer science for this, huh?” OH????
• “He just wants me to suffer.” Hm,, I don’t think she’s talking about Caine there
• “How about we just relax for a bit while nothing’s chasing us?” Awww
• Pomni crying,, ouch :(
• OH BACKSTORY?? NO TEASE?? JUST RIGHT INTO THE PAIN????
• “She was funny, creative, really into entomology. I used to hate bugs, but she somehow got me to like them.” Cute established/married couples where one just gushes about the other usually makes me weak but this time it HURTS
• Oh god I love them so much and she’s not even HERE
• Their whole talk is sooooo good and heartbreaking. I love their father-daughter / grandfather-grandchild dynamic, it’s so well done.
• “I’m glad you’re here with me.” SOB
• “As long as you remember it, things will be okay.” PLEASE I CAN’T DO THIS
• Glowstick
• Pomni thanking Ragatha for always looking out for her and Ragatha looking so taken aback and grateful AUGGGHHH. YES. Ragatha deserves SO much love.
• “Did you remember to get my comedy mask?” “…F*$&!” AHDJAHDA
• “It wasn't that bad, actually.” AWWWW
My expectations for this episode were high but DANG. The team absolutely knocked this one out of the park. Definitely my favourite episode so far.
Kinger’s one of if not my favourite character and I’m SO happy he got so much focus. His and Pomni’s relationship and him comforting her is devastating and beautiful and I can’t even say anything about it without just devolving into
Anyways, I can’t wait to fanart about this episode like a normal, functioning person!

chapter 137 thoughts!
so sorry in advance for how long this chapter review is but anyone who has spoken to me for more than 5 seconds on the topic of oshi no ko probably saw this coming the instant they read the chapter
Picking up immediately where we left off, this chapter feels sort of like a pause to inhale and reiterate Themes and Ideas to really drill them into the readers' head. Technically, none of this is new information (especially as pertains to Ai) so I could see it being repetitive for people who are keyed into Ai as a character but like… I am STILL seeing people in discussions of the manga just flat out not understanding Ai even when the text lays it out so I kind of I can't blame Aka for just clobbering us around the skull with it at this point: There was no horrible dark secret or ZOMG SECRETLY EVIL AI reveal waiting in the wings. It was always just that Ai was a normal girl doing her utmost to live and find normal happiness in a deeply abnormally cruel and lonely life.
With that in mind, I can't help but wonder if the film crew's reactions to this Ruby adlib aren't, to some degree, a reflection of that willful ignorance in the text for the purpose of refuting it — similar to the way Tsukuyomi was used to shut down the "Reincarnator Ai" theories popping up in the wake of new fandom blood back in chapter 118.
Like, these are all people who knew what they were signing up for, who are aware that this is a movie about depicting the "real" Hoshino Ai and yet their reaction is alarm and even dismay - the same instinctive rejection of Ai's vulnerability we see mirrored in Nino and even Aqua to an extent. Even while filming a movie that's all about her pain, they still value and instinctively prioritize the clean and perfect image of the invincible idol, Ai.
By contrast, Gotanda won back a lot of my goodwill this chapter with the monologue that took up most of its first pages. As I've alluded to in some previous chapter reviews, I was having a lot of mixed feelings about Gotanda's role in the movie and 15YL as a whole, but this chapter has reframed things in a way I am tentatively on board with. In this new light, 15YL is about crafting a narrative of Ai's life that may not be literally the events that occurred - it may even take huge liberties with them - but is all in service of conveying a much more important series of emotional truths about the cruelty she was subjected to.
This is mirrored by the visuals that accompany Gotanda's words, a series of disconnected images that do not themselves portray a coherent series of events but paint an emotional narrative of the loneliness, abuse and abandonment that created Hoshino Ai. This honestly might be one of my all-time favourite sequences in OnK so far just on the strength of its imagery alone. Those final two pages especially are just breathtaking: the grotesquely detailed and toothy maw of a B-Komachi fan sandwiched between two pure, sanitized images of Ai, the sea of huge, grasping hands reaching out of the void, on the verge of swallowing her.
I especially want to highlight that final panel of Ai's eerie, perfect smile. I genuinely can't overstate what phenomenal fucking expression work this is from Mengo and once again, I think this might have jumped into my top 5 favourite panels in the series already. It's so frightening — there's nothing technically wrong with it, but it looks wrong, it feels wrong. Even in the confines of a still image, I still somehow got the impression of it being a mask, unnaturally frozen and fixed in place. It honestly jumpscared me a little bit when I first saw it. My friend Silvie (@relares) also pointed out that the panel is framed in such a way that Ai appears to be trapped — backed into the corner of a closed box, pressed up against a wall to cover her vitals like a caged animal. It's really genuinely unsettling.
On that note; scooting back a bit, something I was really gratified to see as a girlie who constantly reaches for this idea in writing for Ai elsewhere: referring to Ai as an animal brings into text something that had, prior to this, only really been a happy accident of associative imagery, where her role as B-Komachi's bunny brought to mind a timid, easily frightened and physically weak little domesticated animal. This chapter makes it very clear this is not accidental but an extremely intentional choice to further emphasize both her vulnerability and dehumanisation. Being a helpless prey animal, rolling over and showing her belly, is less scary than being human
The Japanese text of the chapter the text takes this dehumanisation a step further: Rather than the wasei-eigo term アイドル (aidoru), when calling her an idol, Gotanda uses the word 偶像 (guzou) - an idol by its original definition. It goes beyond just reducing her to an animal - it's objectification in the very literal sense. Ai is an idol, a ceremonial object of worship, an inanimate vessel for the dirty desires of the people around her. That's the nature of the "idolhood" that was inflicted on Ai and it was killing her long before Ryosuke ever picked up a knife
This is especially interesting to see in the wake of Ichibanboshi no Spica, which essentially depicts the moment that Ai starts down this road, committing herself to being an idol who will love and support everyone, even people who hate and scorn her. This is framed by the novel as being something of a breakthrough for her and being liberating for it but I came out of it feeling deeply unsettled in a way I don't think the novel wanted me to be. I couldn't quite articulate why at the time but I think this chapter has given me the language to do so: Spica depicts the moment that Ai goes from アイドル to 偶像 without seeming to realise that's what it's doing and thus does so in a way that is not just uncritical but wholly celebratory.
In a lot of ways, this makes sense - Spica, broadly speaking, is about the "oshi" part of Oshi no Ko: the emotional fulfillment of not just receiving support but in the act of giving support yourself, in cheering someone on and seeing them succeed. Spica depicts these sorts of relationships in a straightforwardly and uncritically positive light, even in cases of parasocial relationships between fans and celebrities but this chapter, by contrast, paints a much more honestly ugly picture, of oppressive expectations, fear and dehumanisation inflicted by the supporters on their "oshi'.
At least in terms of OnK's narrative as a whole, I think the truth is somewhere in the middle: the bad certainty outweighed the good in the end, but it does not erase the ways that Ai was able to find genuine joy and fulfillment in what she did as an idol. But as far as this chapter goes, this is as unflinchingly honest about idol and stan culture as OnK has been, honestly, since the LoveNow arc and maybe even the prologue. It decries it as ugly, visualizing it as grasping hands, drooling teeth and a quivering, terrified prey animal on the verge of being consumed.
This is why (if you'll forgive me for briefly jumping ahead) the RBKN talk at the end ultimately fell so flat for me, among other reasons: it felt extremely out of place to the point of being a little tone-deaf to go from a whole half a chapter so brutally tearing into celeb culture to Ruby brightly talking about her own celebrity ambitions. I don't need Ruby's arc to end with her giving up on being an idol or anything, but it nevertheless feels completely insane to go from the first have of this chapter to the second with absolutely no in-text acknowledgement of how incongruous these two perspectives are.
Given that this is paired with her declaring that she isn't going to be like Ai, I can only take this to mean that Ruby is declaring her intent to never cross the line of アイドル to 偶像 like Ai did but I think that ultimately just kind of misses the point. The only way I can make any sense of it is if the narrative itself is drawing a distinction between アイドル and 偶像 and trying to pretend that the former is something that can be purely good and wholesome.
This frames Ai's situation as being somehow unique to her and while it's true that Ai was a person pushed to extremes by many contributing factors, none of the pressures placed on her by idol culture were unique or unusual. Hell, I've even said before that the premise of Oshi no Ko is more or less the result of the friction of idol culture's obsession with purity and the fantasy it promises of an eternally virginial child-wife and the reality of Hoshino Ai as a dirty, messy human with adult desires and sexual autonomy. When you get down to it, what happened to Ai is really the logical end point of celebrity culture as a whole: dehumanisation, commodification and reduction of people to ceremonial objects of worship. Why else would we call them "idols"?
oh my god. i'm not even halfway through the chapter. i. sorry i';m like this. anyway.
This chapter also does a lot to reframe what 15YL even is as a movie, both through Gotanda's monologue and his take on Ruby's performance as Ai — rather than pure authenticity, it is a blend of Ruby's compassion for and understanding of her mother and her anger and disgust at the people who exploited her, an indictment of the public and all the people who were complicit in her suffering. The end note of the chapter even points out that aiming for "the real thing" is no longer the point of the movie if it ever was and this frees it, to an extent, of the hypocrisy of purporting itself to be a movie about "the real Ai" while dramatising and rewriting aspects of her life and identity to better suit its narrative
As good as this recontextualization of 15YL is, I do think its portrayal in this chapter feels a bit inconsistent with what has been leading up to it. Prior to this, there had been a lot of focus on contrasting the movie's supposed dedication to the authenticity of the real Ai with the number of changes and dramatizations it made of her life and character. This new framing of it is certainly not bad and honestly preferable to what came before, but it does still kind of feel like an overt overcorrection, as if someone finally pointed out to Akasaka what I've been saying this whole time about how fucking ghoulish this movie feels.
anyway. oh my god. moving on at last: wow! mid filming script rewrites!! historically always a great sign for the health of a production! … obviously, actors giving a character a different energy in their performance that contrasts the script and requires adjustment is not UNHEARD of and has resulted in solid movies but that Gotanda makes this decision so lightly and without consulting like… any of his cowriters does speak to Akasaka's comparative level of ignorance as to how movie making works Vs the much more real and in depth experience in TV and music production other parts of the manga reflect.
I do really like that the discussion here ends on a note of asking Ichigo for his thoughts because like… yeah, actually, of course Ichigo should have opinions about this! Even putting aside the That Is Her Dad of it all, Ichigo is the only person involved here who knew Ai before she became and idol and can properly speak to her early experiences. That said, Ichigo being involved here brings something else back up: BRO…. WHERE THE HELL IS MIYAKO!!!!
it is getting so beyond absurd at this point that she is not involved in things. I know people are probably so sick of hearing me harp on about this but her absence is so, so baffling and there really is no good excuse for it. Even if they just said some shit like "Miyako is busting her ass managing our other talents while we make the movie" I'd take that. But that it goes SO uncommented on when she was so involved in getting all this together and just had a whole chapter dedicated to her talking about how strongly she feels about the twins as their mother… it's so baffling!
This goes QUADRUPLE for the total absence of Aqua this chapter, despite him being right there and getting a dedicated reaction panel in 136. The lack of focus on him lately was something I was willing to buy into as an intentional choice that would make sense when viewing the arc in hindsight but at this point, his lack of engagement with the things going on around him is just getting ridiculous, regardless of its intentionality. This is the guy who spent over a month emotionally self harming to the point where images of Ai's face would give him a panic attack and now that he's at, arguably, the lowest emotional point he's been at in his life, we have no reaction to basically seeing her walking and talking in the flesh again?
Hell, given that this is Ruby of all people and this is coming so close on the heels of the GRSR reveal, I'd expect an even stronger reaction from Aqua than anyone else but… nope! Nothing. We've barely had any meaningful AQRB interactions and it all adds up to making that past life reveal and the tease of Ruby's feelings in the wake of it feel totally flaccid as a plot development because nothing is coming of it. I know we will inevitably have to circle back around to it given that the HKAI scenes are on the horizon but there were surely ways to weave this more organically into the ongoing conflict that didn't result in me feeling like I'm sat at a kantenzushi place and waiting for something to come back around on the belt. Gah!!
Speaking of conflict, I want to at last move onto the RBKN talk that makes up the back half of this chapter. As I alluded to earlier, this talk fell incredibly flat for me, both as a character beat for these two characters and as a conclusion to this chapter in particular. I already talked about why Ruby's resolution here didn't click with me but more broadly, I simply don't like this as the resolution to the RBKN conflict which is seems to be presented as.
To touch on the things I do like about it… thematically, I enjoy this as a continuation of the ongoing idea of the New B-Komachi learning from and correcting the mistakes of the group that came before them. In practice, though… have they actually done that? This talk doesn't meaningfully address or even really acknowledge all the ways New B-Komachi is repeating old mistakes or the way the group quite literally does exist purely for Ruby's sake and that her taking that for granted left both Kana and Mem feeling used, as if they were just accessories to decorate Ruby's idol career that her CEO mommy bought for her. Instead, they just touch on the very surface level issue of their staged argument and then move on as if things are resolved. There's obviously still room in the future for us to circle back to it with Kana's graduation concert set but as things stand now, it's an unsatisfying note to end this thread on.
Ruby is robbed of the opportunity to do any real introspection and we as readers don't even see the moment she realizes what Kana is doing and why, or get any real insight into her feelings on this fight outside of vouyeristically goggling at her in the immediate aftermath of her pain. There was some really great potential here for Ruby's behaviour during her Black Hoshigan arc to finally catch up to her and make her face the consequences of her poor treatment of Kana and Memcho. She could've had a chance to confront her own inner ugliness and her potential for buying into the same bullshit perpetuated by the rest of the industry that hurt her mom so badly. Instead, we get an endpoint in lieu of any real work necessary to get there without any indication that she has learned anything meaningful from this arc or that her relationship with Kana has changed at all.
Kana, too, is done exceptionally dirty here. We get a lot of great Kana introspection in this arc, digging into both her feelings of insecurity towards Ruby specifically and the sense of empathy she developed through playing Nino, who she saw as being in a similar position to her. Kana's jealousy towards Ruby and her sense of being Ruby's extra, an accessory, is something that's been brewing in the background honestly since the First Concert Arc and I initially found it incredibly cathartic to see her finally expressing that to Ruby and getting those feelings off her chest. I was looking forward to seeing how she would work through this and resolve it, confronting her inner demons and coming to have a healthier relationship with Ruby as a result. But again… it just doesn't happen. Kana gets no closure over the hurt she expressed in this arc — instead, she's once again used as a stepping stone to prop Ruby up and make her shine.
And like… what are we supposed to take away from this? That Kana — and Nino by extension — were correct? That Ruby is just The Most Special by default (never mind her CEO mommy explicitly favouring her for work and opportunities) and that the only way Kana can deal with it is by quitting as an idol altogether? I'm going to be totally frank: as both a Kana enjoyer and a Ruby enjoyer, I think this sucks shit as a resolution for both of them! It's not only unfair to Kana but it's also just so boring as a way of characterizing Ruby. I think there's a space in OnK for really interesting discussions about like, natural talent VS hard work and how much of someone's success is one or the other but this conflict absolutely is not that.
In general, this chapter just felt… uneven, I guess. The first half of it, as you can probably gather by my completely unhinged ramblings, was one of my favourites we'd gotten out of OnK in a long time but with the back half falling so flat for me, it just ends up feeling kind of jarring and a bit less than the sum of its parts. It's definitely not a BAD chapter by any stretch and it very clearly gave me a lot to chew on and think about. It's just kind of a let down that a chapter and a shared character arc I was otherwise enjoying so much ended on such an incredibly nothing note.

okay so. I'm playing Stray Gods: Orpheus for the first time since it released over a month ago. I'm going to just yell into the tumblr void. spoilers btw.
I went back in an old save and played through The Throne so I could have Orpheus be king of Hades because... achievement.
CERBERUS. CUTE LITTLE GUY. I WANT MORE OF HIM. PLEASE.
the Derryn thing still gets me.
not just Derryn. this whole song. imagine sitting with someone for a date and they compliment you by comparing you to Medusa.
HAHA Orpheus got so pissed when the one guy said Apollo was his favorite.
is it just me or is anyone else getting the feeling that Hermes likes Orpheus? just. the way Hermes looks at him. the way they say certain things. idk.
omg. Orpheus might be shit at modern communication. but he's got great threats.
he can't just leave. he's gotta sing a loud ass song in the middle of a public place announcing that he's done.
"I've never been in love, not ever." LIAR. WHAT ARE YOU DOING RIGHT NOW? HUH???
Orpheus doesn't want to ask the gods for another lover. that is exactly why he asked Hermes.
"I'm depressed because speed dating failed. WELP, TIME TO GET DRUNK!!"
"a seal phone"
should I flirt with Medusa? nah. I did that already. I'm going the route of hate everyone but Hermes despite the fact that I know he's not an option.
the way that Orpheus sees Medusa and is just like "oh, okay." ALL YOU KNOW ABOUT HER IS THAT SHE'S A MAN EATING MONSTER. THE FUCK.
LET'S KILL ATHENA!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
Medusa's music is so... idk. it's uncomfortable in a good way. makes me uneasy.
"I go unnoticed here." not anymore. you are singing quite loud.
HERMES IS MORE SCARED OF MEDUSA THAN ORPHEUS. WHAT.
DON'T YOU DARE REJECT HIM, HERMES. they did it. :(
the captions revealing that a character named Daphne exists is crazy.
the little doodle profile picture is so cute. smoll.
the mic just. disappeared?
the mic is back.
Grace's voice was a jumpscare.
who's more of a stereotypical D&D bard? Orpheus or Grace?
who's at more of a crossroads? Orpheus or Grace? (seriously why is Grace just as lost as at the start of the original game???)
Orpheus would not be able to comprehend the concept of aro/ace
I always forget that Grace isn't a theatre kid. well, at least we don't have any evidence that she is.
Grace just suggested stalking a film star.
Grace is too creative for anyone's good.
this would actually be such a great scene for Hermes to say they like Orpheus.
HERMES IS PLAYING WITH CYRBERUS
THAT WAS AMAZING
anyway. this game is great. but like 10 hours straights makes you burnt out. glad I put the game down for a month. King Orpheus + find the muses is my favourite route I've done so far. the part in the one song with Grcae about the muses was so cool.

The Sound Test is hands down my favourite piece of horror in Undertale.
Yeah, sure. Photoshop Flowey is a great spiritual successor to Giygas, and Gaster to Uboa. The Chara jumpscare is disturbing, as is the entire No Mercy run. But the Sound Test is a masterfully crafted anecdote that deserves more appreciation.
So to recap, Fun event 65 begins when you walk north in the crossroads before Snowdin. The music cuts out to transition to text on a black background.
It starts off positively: “Welcome to the Sound Test! Listen to all your favorites. Press Left or Right to select. Press Z to play a song.” The friendly terms fade in calmly, offsetting any disturbance caused by this sudden interruption by easing into it. We also need to note Undertale was designed as a niche RPG for RPG fans, which intentionally played with their expectations.
With that audience in mind, the player also likely has an expectation here: contemporary sound test rooms are typically a cool bonus for players, unlocked either through the progression of a game or its completion, or sometimes only through codes or developer consoles. They provide a list to play of all the sound files in a game, or at least the OST. This is a generally beloved feature when provided, allowing players to jam out to their favourite tracks. “Listen to all your favorites” seems to confirm this, reinforcing the brain to glaze over any specifics and autofill an expected experience here.
So we dive excitedly into this bonus feature (if maybe a little bit confused). Sound tests typically are accessible from main menus, and we were just interrupted while playing the game, but whatever, this game is a bit weird anyway. What songs do we have? You can cycle through them, but more likely people will play one by one in successsion.
We start with “Happy Town.” There hasn't been a “Happy Town” location yet that we've seen, but this is probably an area from later in the game or something. We click on it, and it's... short. It's just a simple loop on two channels, too. The melody itself is rather boring. Okay. Maybe this is just an intro track, so on to the next one.
“Meat Factory.” Uhh. This is definitely from later in the game... probably? When you think on it for even a moment, you realize this grim title sounds very tonally out of place in a game that's so far been pretty fantastical and friendly, and that makes it immediately unsettling. Clicking on it immediately confirms this. Where Happy Town was pretty noncommittal, Meat Factory's 8-bit loop is even shorter and almost oppressive in its relentless, growling two notes, repeating at an alarming pace, as if approaching with deadly intent. Why is something so disturbing and almost industrial in a funny little game?
You quickly switch to the next song. “Trouble Dingle.” A “dingle” might imply something a little bit lighter, and “trouble” sounds maybe a little more whimsical than “doom,” but there is no relief here. This loop is longer, but distorted and chaotic. It sounds corrupted. There's no trackable melody, it loses the 8-bit instrument, and like Photoshop Flowey's fight or the unpredictable melody of “Amalgamate,” is generally throwing away all sense of safety in favour of absolute disorientation.
At this point, you have likely forgotten about the context and are trying to find one song that's not incredibly disturbing. Maybe you've even realized by now that there is no way to even exit this unsettling “room.”
It's an auditory chase scene. The pressure increases with every song. Something is approaching, and fast.
Enter “Gaster's Theme.”
The hunt is over. The music has caught you. Suddenly, no matter what you do, you are trapped, forced to listen to this piece, this theme of a character you do not know, which starts off curious before dipping threateningly into the minor key. You rightfully may get the impression that this character “Gaster,” whoever they are, exerts some terrifying control over you, to be able to freeze you like this, able to writhe around between song tracks but change absoutely nothing, escape utterly futile.
You are only free when this music chooses to let you go. It cuts off abruptly. “Thanks for your feedback!” it says cheerfully. Then:
“Be seeing you soon.”
It's an incredibly compelling little horror piece and potential villain introduction that I find even more unsettling than the 66 mysteryman door itself. It's short but sweet, toying perfectly with expectations and making us deliberately uncomfortable at every turn.
#this isn't a theory i just needed to get this out of my system#undertale#too soon to say if gaster will be a villain at all. but *within this event specifically* his presence is antagonistic#in other events like mysteryman door it doesn't feel that way however#'ma? the deltarune theorist is wildly speculating again'
