⚠️ DISCLAIMER: Please be advised! Translations of all Japanese answers derive from a combination of Google Translate and my manager's three-quarters-remembered Japanese. We've tried our best to work out what he's saying, but there will be mistakes here and there. Do not take this as gospel!

To avoid spreading too much misinfo, where we're completely boggled about an answer, we've decided not to even make an attempt. We'll still list the post, but mark it accordingly.

First of all, the questions answered here are not official. Everything that is official is what is said within the work. In contrast, this is simply what Kodaka, the creator, thinks, and it is not the correct answer. Use this as a starting point to enjoy the depth of each character, or to say, "That's not right!" and enjoy it with your own interpretation. I think of this as a way of communicating with the characters who live in fiction. This is important, so please spread the word.

Q: Out of all the characters that have appeared so far, who is your favorite visually?

A: As a fan, Haruko from FLCL. Among my own creations...hmmm, Monokubs lol and Enoshima.

Q: Sorry if this has already been said! I saw a tweet saying that Fukawa Toko's novel "Before the Scent of the Sea Disappears" was made into a short film by Kodaka Kazutaka! Is there anywhere I can see it?

A: I don't have it..! I have the data on my PC, but…lol

Q: Are you interested in making games in the world of Ultimate Talent Development Plan? I would like to see all the characters together. (Sorry my Japanese is not very good. I am using a translator.)

Q: I love Ultra Despair Girls, but it's sad that so few people are playing it 😢 Are there plans for a port or remake for the Switch?

A: It's an absolute masterpiece! I'm proud to say that it has the heaviest storyline I've ever written, and the friendship at the end will have you in tears. And it's also pretty fun to take down all the Monokumas in one fell swoop. The controls are a bit rough in some areas, so I'd like to tweak them and re-release it. But maybe that last possibility is impossible in today's world...

Q: What is your favorite chapter in the Danganronpa series?

A: Hmm, Chapters 1 and 6 of 1, and Chapters 5 and 6 of 2. Maybe Chapters 1, 5 and 6 of 3.

Q: I love Danganronpa Zero, and I'd like to ask if there were any particular things that you were thinking about when you were writing it.

A: At the time, it was my first novel in about five years, and although I said "I'll do it" lightly, I wasn't good at writing the narrative, and after pushing myself into scrapping it many times, I finally managed to get it done by writing the narrative from the protagonist's point of view.

Q: I got hooked on the Danganronpa series when I was in elementary school and am now a working adult!! Danganronpa is my favorite work of all time! Of course I played Rain Code too!! I love how Shinigami-chan grows and becomes more human as the story progresses! I wonder if a sequel to Danganronpa is really possible...? I'm also waiting for a sequel to Rain Code I'll keep waiting until I die! I love you!

A: From elementary school to working adult…! Thanks to Danganronpa, you've become a fine adult! Neither sequel is impossible. I'd like to expand more, get results from other new works, and make myself more valuable, and do it when it's best for me.

Q: Are there any characters that have a secret backstory in any of the Danganronpa works?

A: For the most part, there are still stories that we haven't talked about.

Q: This may be a question that can't be answered (it may have been asked already), but in the bad ending of Danganronpa, Togami holds a portrait of Fukawa, and there is a child of Togami? Will the truth about that ever come to light?!

A: With the loss of Kirigiri, and the decision to live together within the school, everyone had a change of heart and decided to join hands. Fukawa stopped belittling herself, and Togami stopped being arrogant, and the two started dating, but the next day Fukawa died in an accident. She died after choking on a dumpling, and Togami was confused, believing it was a curse from Celes. As Asahina comforted the depressed boy, things just sort of happened and Togami's child was born. Asahina loves children, and decided that this was her mission and she would give birth to everyone's children. And since that was all there was to do in the boring school life, everyone did it a lot. After that, she gave birth to more than 10 children, and the school flourished.

Q: I can't help but wonder about the night that Asahina, Hagakure, Togami, and Fukawa spent in the gym in Chapter 5 of Danganronpa. What were they doing that night?

A: I think they were standing in the dark gymnasium, each at one of the four corners, going around tapping the shoulder of the next person in the corner...

Q: The "motivation video" that appeared in V3 featured someone important to each character, but it wasn't revealed who was in the motivation video for the characters in the main story. Did you have a set idea in mind of "this character is this person", Mr. Kodaka? Some characters talk about family or special people in Free Time scenarios, but there are also some characters who don't talk about such things, so I'm curious.

A: I had it set at the time, but I've forgotten about it...

A: Monomi and Monokuma.

Q: I love the scene in Chapter 6 of the original Danganronpa where the mastermind and the scissors girl (I will not reveal her name for now) meet and politely greet each other. Mr. Kodaka, are there any funny or gag scenes from the Danganronpa series or Rain Code that you like?

A: There are heaps of gag scenes and funny scenes, but when I first saw Monokuma and Monomi's comedy routine in 2 with their lines incorporated, I felt something otherworldly that I'd never heard before. We record out of order, so after incorporating it with the game, I was surprised at how otherworldly it was.

A: It's not exactly a good idea to capture people dying on film…

A: My personal opinion is... For guys, it's Shinguji. There are girls who are attracted to weird guys like that. For girls, it's Iruma. There are boys who are attracted to weird girls like that.

NOTE: I believe this is IRL, not in-universe, as Kodaka later answers who has the most friends in-universe, and it's not Miu or Kork.

A: It's probably Yukizome.

Q: Among the BGM used in the original, 2, and V3, is there any that you particularly like, Mr. Kodaka? I absolutely love New World Order from the original, DANGANRONPA SUPER MIX from 2, and V3 Discussion - SCRUM - from V3!

A: The punishment music was created first, and it created a Danganronpa atmosphere, or rather a playful yet serious atmosphere, so it has a deeply cryptic vibe.

Q: I bought Danganronpa again on Steam and had my ex-girlfriend play the whole series, and she got hooked. This may be mentioned in other media, but are there any characters who weren't meant to die but ended up dying?

A: While I was writing, some roles were switched, but I don't think there were many changes to the plot. I think it was Nidai and Kuzuryu who switched roles...

NOTE: His memory is correct. Beta designs show a Fuyuhiko-like character who was meant to the the team manager, and a mafia guy who was a big Nekomaru-ish dude.

A: Personally, I'm not interested in underwear. They're dirty.

A: "I didn't realize it at the time, so I wasn't even conscious of it. If I had realized it sooner, things might have been different..."

Q: I feel like there weren't any characters in the original Danganronpa who were definitely able to cook, so who was cooking at breakfast and the like? I'd also like to know if there were any characters who could cook in the original!

A: I think they basically just used pre-cooked food, but I think Fujisaki and Yamada seem like they can cook.

Q: How did you decide the seating order for the class trial?

A: Intentionally in random order so as not to create any patterns.

A: A rough estimate is a quarter.

A: Of course, Danganronpa is mostly in their teens. Raincode has a wide range, but even Yakou is in his 30s.

NOTE: This is kind-of hilarious, because I'm pretty sure it's canonically stated Yakou is actually in his late 20s...in something that Kodaka himself wrote. I'll have to go find evidence.

A: Fresh tonkatsu.

NOTE: Tonkatsu is a fried pork cutlet.

Q: Were the Love Hotel scenes also supervised by Kodaka-san? When Ouma says that he doesn't care what Saihara does to him, is that what he says to make it possible for him to have anyone in that space under his control?

A: I did supervise it. But I left that to people who are good at that sort of thing and refrained from interfering too much, and I still refrain from doing so now.

Q: Is there any trick to Tanaka Gundham's chuunibyou dialogue? I'm curious to know how you think of the unique expressions used by Saionji Hiyoko and Iruma Miu.

A: The insults come out super easily, but Tanaka's lines were thought out thoroughly, based on the light novels I've read, so it's exhausting.

NOTE: A "chuunibyou" is a kid, generally 12-13, who believes they have secret powers or a grand backstory. Gundham's a bit old to be a chuuni by Kodaka's own admission in the DR2 artbook, but that was apparently part of the charm (and why it was so difficult to write him). It's spiritual Naruto running.

Q: I'd like to know what underwear your favorite Danganronpa character wears, Kodaka-san.

A: Monomi's panties. Diapers.

A: I won't make a clear statement. I am not sure what will happen in the future. Anyway, please spread the Rain Code around the world.

Q: If Hope's Peak Academy had regular exams, who would have the best overall grades?

A: It would have to be Togami. Kirigiri has clear strengths and weaknesses and doesn't seem like she'd be good at things like art. However, when it comes to multiple choice questions, Komaeda who relies on luck is the strongest, Ouma steals the answers in advance, and Ki-Bo tries hard and is average, but is bad at calculations.

Q: when i played danganronpa there were times where i wondered about how some characters got along with their family, have you written/thought anything about a character's family background that isn't mentioned in the video games?even if it's something small i feel like it would be interesting to read

A: I think, but the fact that I did not put it in writing means that I left it to the player's imagination.

Q: Hello, Kodaka-san. You're probably tired of questions about the sexual orientation of characters. Komaeda in particular is one of the most talked about characters when it comes to this topic. It's actually a little sad that the fandom cares more about what gender a character is attracted to than who they actually are. This may be weird to ask after writing this much, but I want to ask out of pure curiosity: what do you think about couples in Danganronpa? I don't think any couples have ever actually been confirmed, is that intentional? There's been a lot of discussion about that topic, so I just wanted to know.

A: Like the Asahina ending in Danganronpa, there's the possibility that different people could become couples with different people. That's what makes it interesting.

A: Famously, after months of having the planner in charge of the project come up with many ideas, and then losing them all over the place, he suddenly came up with the idea. It was built on his despair.

NOTE: This is another weird one that's hard to translate, but I think he's referring to himself as "the planner in charge of the project," so he's saying that he went through hell trying to figure out how to kill Komaeda.

Thanks @missunderstoodlyrics for the tag and @cheeseplants for the game! What a fun way to round out a crazy year for so many of us!

In 2024 I wrote around 200k for the Good Omens Fandom. My total word count for the fandom is a little under 292k but some of that happened at the end of last year. Still a crazy number to stare at. And I have every intention of surpassing 300k before we enter 2025!

So I've only published two longfics, so those are my top🤣:

While I feel incredibly accomplished and humbled by my ability to complete two novel-length fictions in the span of 12 months, what I've been most proud of is this community and the friendships I've made. Be it commenting on someone's meta. engaging with an author about their fic, messaging folks on here directly or even chats via discord, it's the community that makes this fandom so special. I am so grateful I leaned in here more than I ever have in any other online community to meet all of you.

A goal I have for 2025 is a true collaboration, I have a bit of a marinating idea that I may hit up one or two folks on the tag list below to discuss😉

𝕾ynopsis. — Yang Jungwon has stood by her side from the age of six to the night of her eternal age ceremony. He has spent nearly her entire life reassuring her that her time would come, that she would possess her vampiric abilities soon enough, but he couldn’t have been more wrong. Her lack in vampiric traits cause a ripple in their friendship, her father is withholding secrets from her and she slowly begins to lose a sense of self, but maybe with Jungwons help she can find out who she is truly meant to be in this life.

CHAPTER 4

The next morning she was woken up to Aleera singing at the top of her lungs while she got dressed.

“Does she always do this?” Yn groans as she pushes herself up on bed and rubs the sleep from her eyes.

“Yup, you’ll get used to it and actually just learn to tune it out.” Fawna responds while brushing her teeth.

By the time the girls had finished the time had rolled around for them to go and right on time Sunghoon had come knocking on the door.

“Alright let's go people, I want to show her everything before nightfall!” Aleera opens the door and rushes yn and Fawna out not even giving Sunghoon much of a chance to realize what was going on.

Meanwhile back in his history class the others couldn’t help but wonder where Sunghoon had been, it wasn’t like him to miss any classes.

The day went by pretty smoothly, most of it being Aleera dragging them all to her favorite places for half of their time out, she had barely even gathered any of the supplies she needed.

“You know what Sunghoon, why don’t you take yn to get her supplies, I’ll try and keep Aleera busy for a while before we end up spending the entire day just sightseeing. Fawna pinches the bridge of her nose and shakes her head, earning a laugh from yn as she follows Sunghoons leave before Aleera makes her return from the bathroom.

For a while the walk between Sunghoon and her was entirely silent until he decided to break the silence between the two of them.

“Do you mind if I ask you something?”

“Oh- no of course not go ahead you already know my secret so at this rate there isn’t anything I can’t tell you.”

“You and Jungwon, how do you know each other? Did you date?”

“What” her eyes widened at the sudden unexpected question, for a moment she stood there embarrassed. Has she dated Jungwon? Never, because no matter how much she looked at him like she adorned him back then he had never noticed her in that way.

“You and Jungwon. Everything seems a little tense between the two of you and I assume you wouldn’t just tell your secret to him if you two weren’t close in some kind of way, I’ve never seen him act that way until now.”

“We just- we were only friends, he was the only friend i had since i was six. My father never really let me leave the estate, so when he found out that I snuck out to watch the other kids play one day he brought Jungwon. Jungwon was the only person that understood me, the only person aside from my father and I that knew my secret. After my 20th he just stopped coming over and I didn’t see him again, I didn’t know why but after seeing the way he reacted to me yesterday I guess- I guess maybe he was just putting on an act until I got old enough for him to just dump back onto my father.”

“Mm I see.” And there it was again that awkward silence between the two of them grew even thicker.

“Sunghoon??” The sound of a familiar voice snapped Sunghoon from his thoughts. As he and yn turn around standing behind him stood Heeseung, Niki, and Sunoo.

“What are you guys doing here?”

“We could ask you the same thing? We haven’t seen you in class all day.” Heeseungs eyes then shifted to yn and back to Sunghoon and his eyes quirk up out of interest.

“I’m helping Aleera and Fawna show her around, Mrs. Yang asked them to help her spend today getting supplies.” They all shared a look with one another as if his answer stirred up some sort of suspicion within him, it was completely unusual for Sunghoon to not only skip classes, but for a girl? Before Heeseung and the others could question him further Aleeras voice could be heard all the way from the other side of the square. The group turns around as they find Aleera and Fawna running towards them.

“Sorry I tried to keep her distracted for as long as I could but the girl is impatient.” Fawna apologizes and stops dead in her tracks as her eyes land on the group of three.

“What are they doing here?”

“They saw me and Sunghoon when we were on our way to the boutique.”

Heeseungs mouth fell open. Sunghoon. Park Sunghoon? To a boutique?

“You know I'm kinda offended that you would invite Sunghoon and not me.” Sunoo chimes in giving an annoyed eye roll to Aleera

“Actually yn invited him, if it were up to me I wouldn't be inviting any of you anywhere after what happened with Jungwon yesterday.”

“Hey, why are we getting the blame for something Jungwon said? We just wanted to know more about her and he had a little outburst.” Niki who finally looks up from his phone joins in on the conversation.

“So what that two faced fucker is still your friend.” Fawna retorts, with evident annoyance in her tone.

“Fawna, Aleera it's okay…it's fine they were curious. It's not like they could have known Jungwon would react that way.” yn sighs, now having to think about what had happened in the cafeteria once again, for the second time today. Heeseung was shocked to say the least, that she would vouch for them without even knowing them but he was grateful that she didn’t judge them based on Jungwons actions.

“Heeseung you’re lucky our yn is such a sweetheart, if i were her i'd have you both head first in that fountain over there.”

“Aren't you being too harsh, why do you always have to threaten me, why is it never Niki or the others?”

“Oh that was meant for all of you, not just you, Niki and Sunoo”

“You realize whatever it is you try wouldn’t even work on me right?” Nikis eyebrows raise, an amused grin on his face.

“I'll make it work Niki don’t worry”

“Since you guys are here if you’re still curious, you’re free to join us? We were going to go to the boutique and then Aleera was going to show me her favorite ice cream spot after.” yn tries to diverge their attention away by inviting them along which makes Aleeras mouth fall open, but before she could say anything Fawna shakes her head in disapproval.

“Ice cream, does it even taste good?” Sunghoon asks making Aleeras mouth fall wide open once again

“You’re joking?”

“I’ve actually never had it either…” Heeseung joins in, followed by Niki.

“I feel like I’m surrounded by a bunch of freaks.” Aleera sighs, and Heeseung and Niki seemingly get offended, while Sunghoon just shrugs. yn can’t seem to hide the smile on her face from her simple interaction. Was this what it was like to have friends? Back then she would sneak out with Jungwon and they’d go out into the village and watch all the other kids and teens interact and they seemed so happy. Was this what they were feeling?

“What about you Sunoo? Have you ever had it?”

“Unlike these two my parents weren’t strict, they spoiled me like the perfect prince. They gave me everything I asked for. Ice cream was the only human food I'd ever been interested in.” Sunoos' response didn’t seem to shock any of them.

“That's why he always has an attitude, he was too spoiled.” Niki chimes in earning a nod of agreement from all except yn.

“You know what all of you can kiss my ass, yn let’s go.” Sunoo suddenly locks his arm with hers and walks away from the group leaving her somewhat dumbfounded.

“Hey get back here with my yn.” Aleera chases after the two before locking her other arm with hers and the rest of the group wasn’t too far behind.

Sunghoon simply sighs, this was meant to be his opportunity to ask her more questions about her childhood and such, but once again their time was cut short. He would just have to wait until tonight when the two of them could be alone. But unfortunately that wouldn’t happen.

“You know what i was actually judging you when you decided to get mint chocolate chip, but this isn’t that bad.” Aleera nods her head upon approving Fawnas choice in ice cream.

“Not like you have to eat it anyways, don’t you have your own.” Fawna responds, shaking her head at the girl as she continues to eat her ice cream.

Meanwhile Heeseung and Niki had been on their third cone.

“I think I finally found someone that might like ice cream more than me.” Aleeras comment earns a laugh from yn as they all watched Niki and Heeseung scarf down their cones for the nth time. Sunghoon on the other hand sat silently enjoying his.

“Is it good?” yn turns to him curiously, at his question he simply nods.

“Want to try some?” At his question all yn could do was stare at him blankly, her lashes batting every two seconds. Even the others stopped what they were doing momentarily after hearing him ask her such a question.

Her eyes shifted from his ice cream then up to his lips and she quickly turned away to continue eating her own.

“No- no thank you.” How could he ask her a question like that so easily. Sunghoon on the other hand found nothing wrong with what he asked, without a care in the world he just went back to eating his ice cream. Before leaving the parlor they all ordered one more cone before making their return back to the Academy.

“I still think we should watch twilight, what do you guys have against it?” Heeseung complains as the eight of them stepped back on campus, they had been trying hard to decide on a movie to watch together the entire walk back to the Academy.

“Absolutely not.” The others say in unison. Heeseungs eyes shift to yn who had been trying to stay out of the conversation the entire time seeing them all go back and forth with their decisions

“Yn? What do you think?” He asks expectantly, fully expecting her to agree with him, only to end up disappointed by her answer

“Sorry Heeseung but I absolutely hated it, I’ll never understand why humans love it so much, its cringe and insulting.”

“You guys have no sense of romance.”

“Why don’t we just let yn pick I’m sure she’ll pick out something entertaining.”

“Have you guys seen Practical Magic?”

“Nope.” They all respond with a string of no’s and nopes

“Then I’ll go with that one.”

“So it's settled then we all meet back at the girls' dorm in ten?” Sunoo announces to the group to which they all nod in agreement.

“I can’t believe you really invited them here.” Aleera voiced as the three girls prepared for their guests' arrival.

“Why are you acting like you’ve never had Sunoo here before, you two always come back here after shopping and stuff.” Fawna counterattacks

“Yeah but that’s just Sunoo the others haven’t really been in here since that fight.”

“Fight?”

“Before you got here there was a big fight between the group and one of the guys that used to go here, he had been friends with the guys and us for years but once they found out he was only friends with the group to get some sort of information from Jungwon, things got heated and things were awkward between all of us for a while.”

“Oh- what kind of information was he looking for? And from Jungwon of all people?”

“We don’t really know, we never found out and after the fight he disappeared from the school.” yn couldn’t help but wonder how much she had missed in the short span of time that she hadn’t seen Jungwon.

Festivids 2024 Rec List!!!

Happy Festivids! This year there 131 amazing festivids in the collection, and so many of them were really amazing! Here's a list of just some of my favorites! Also, in the interest of not going on and on and on, I'm gonna limit myself to one rec per fandom, even though there were a few fandoms that had great turnout where I really loved all the vids that got made. Also @tafadhali already made a great rec list, so I'm gonna link to that and try to pick some different things than she did for the fandoms with multiple vids (though there is a LOT of overlap on other stuff).

First of all, I received 5 amazing gifts/treats:

She's Not There (Marmalade), by distant_fox This vid is so much fun, and I love the song choice! It's for a recent movie called Marmalade, starring Aldis Hodge and Joe Keery, which is a very fun heist movie with some great twists and turns, and this vid is an ideal recruitment vid if anyone wants a good movie rec, in addition to a vid rec!

Boyfriend - Fred's Version (Crashing), by @tafadhali Absolutely delighted that my sister made this vid for me! I made a Crashing vid to a lesbian song called Boyfriend a while back so this song choice makes me sooooo happy, and I think it's executed just beautifully. Also if there are any fans of Jonathan Bailey and/or Phoebe Waller-Bridge who are looking for a very short (6 episode) sitcom with a fantastic (ridiculous, messy as hell) gay love story in it, I highly recommend Crashing.

Lantern (M*A*S*H), by @sholiofic Oh my goodness, this vid just gives me tooooo many feels. The clips Sholio selected are just perfectly chosen to completely devastate me. I love these characters, and they love each other, and this vid does such a good job capturing the heart of this show, all the pain and love and hurt/comfort. Beautiful!

Pisonia Prologue (Invasion of the Body Snatchers - multi), by @thepastisaroadmap I could not possibly have been more excited for this request to have been filled. It blends the 50s, 70s, and 90s adaptations of this story together beautifully in a vid that masterfully captures the paranoia and the tension and the mounting sense of dread that is characteristic of this story in all its forms. Really wonderful horror vid.

Maps for the Getaway (Holiday), by @fairestcat God, I love this movie and I love these characters and I love this vid so much! It's a perfectly chosen song for these characters who don't care about money or having a perfect life with a white picket fence - they care about having time to spend with the people/doing the things that bring them joy, and they find that with each other, and it just makes me cry with joy.

Some other vids I loved (that I will not go into as much detail about) include:

Bad Day (Dimension 20), by Tafadhali - Absolutely wonderful vid of all the total shitshow days the Intrepid Heroes (and others) have on D20.

Friendship (Only Murders in the Building), by Tafadhali - Super fun vid with hardly any murder, just friendship set to a perfect song for the tone of the show.

Hit & Run (Challengers), by @findmeinthealps - Outstanding OT3 vid that does an excellent job balancing all the sides of this triangle before bringing them all together.

Unwritten (Stranger than Fiction), by @sandalwoodbox - Super well made vid to a perfect song for the source that really makes me want to rewatch this movie.

Wanna Be Her (Climbing RPF), by suzanne_f - Always gotta have some amazing female athlete RPF vids at Festivids, and I love this one so much, especially given that it is my sport of choice.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (Some Like It Hot), by FairestCat - Suuuch a fun song/cover for this movie. Delightful romp of a vid.

If You Tolerate This (Casablanca), by FairestCat - Look, the world is looking not great right now, and this vid made me openly sob. So. I highly recommend it, but have tissues ready.

Twistin' the Night Away (The Wizard of Oz), by beabopit - Such a fun Wizard of Oz vid that makes great use of all types of "twistin'" - from spirals, to twirls, to full on tornados!

The White Tent the Raft (The National Film Board of Canada), by @superjinkyo - Amazing and gorgeous 9 minute vid celebrating the wonderful animation of the National Film Board of Canada, which I will now need to go check out for myself.

Psychopomp (I Saw the TV Glow/myhouse.wad), by @heliological - Very cool concept, combines I Saw the TV Glow with myhouse.wad, a Doom mod with a lot of thematic overlap with the movie and which I went down a whole rabbit hole learning about thanks to this vid.

Motownphilly (Abbott Elementary), by @twwings - Obligatory feel-good sitcom vid, sooo much fun, perfect celebration of these characters and this setting.

The Breaking Light (The Stand), by @thosecombustibleheads - Lovely vid that really highlights the community and the hope of this source, even with all its bleakness.

What I Did For Love (Pushing Daisies), by seekingferret - An excellent Ned character study and Ned/Chuck vid, absolutely inspired song choice.

The Hour Is Yours (Severance), by suzanne_f - Hilarious song choice. Perfectly executed.

Tightrope (Blazing Saddles), by citruses - Super fun Bart vid, really captures the fun of this movie, especially in the Jim verse.

So Wrong (Desert Hearts), by videobaths - Slow, tender, romantic vid with an absolutely perfect song choice for this movie.

Dionysus Finds Love (Kaos), by @frayadjacent12 - Obligatory cat vid. I love how much vidders love vids about cats. This vid delights me despite no knowledge of the source.

Hall of the Hot Ones (Hot Ones), by valoise - Sooo funny. Schadenfreude the vid.

You Told the Drunks I Knew Karate (Derry Girls), by evewithanapple - Love a vid to this song always, and it's so perfect for this group of lovable idiots. Really makes me smile.

Together Alone (Cullen & Bethany DA2 fic) I love it, but it's just lower on the priority list.

favorite thing i wrote this year:

I am super proud of everything I wrote this year, but like last year my fic Kiss Me Moonstruck is right up at the top. (Matchmaking fic based on the idea that Leandra Hawke and her old friend Alsatia Trevelyan are trying to fix up their kids, Garrett and Rose) This time last year it was a nascent fic with just a few short chapters formed, now it's published, about 16 chapters long and still growing. It represents a type of romantic story I just can't seem to find enough of that's both a little bit madcap the way romantic comedies of old are but also real. One with flawed characters that feel authentic to the world that made them and one that explores the juiciness of Kirkwall and the nature of attraction/falling in love and how timing often shits on us and ultimately how to prevail when the world insists on being the worst. Being a DA2 fic necessitates some degree of drama and tragedy because Thedas is still Thedas. I'm really proud of it and I'm so grateful for the people reading it because it is such a niche pairing.

favorite one shot:

Probably An Inexplicable Pull, a little fic I cooked up from a prompt @caitlam sent me that pairs with my DA:I long fic. I was trying to capture that very early glimmer of attraction between Commander Cullen and my out-of-her-depth-but-trying-her-best Herald Rose Trevelyan.

favorite thing(s) I read:

Destiny is Just in the Timing by @crackinglamb (Varric x Cadash, DA2-DAI) The Varricmance we all need! Lamb's fic is so wonderfully snappy, like the whole thing is just smirking right back at me as I read it. I love Varric paired with the Cadash hired to follow him around Kirkwall and keep an eye on him. Spicy, sweet, snarky, FUN. Garrett & Shae are the friendship I needed. Loved this fic front to back! Kingdom Come by @nirikeehan (Blackwall x Trevelyan, post-Trespasser). I adore this grief-addled second chance fic where the Inquisitor makes a whole bunch of questionable decisions with ex-flame Blackwall after the death of her husband Cullen. So good. So crunchy. So hot. Ropes of Fate by @delicatefade I don't think a fic has ever made me scream-laugh as much as this one. Dalish life, written in the perspective of a preteen. Deep Dalish headcanons. So many universal truths about teens. It's brilliant. cut down at the garden gate by @carnalapples (Sebastian x f!Hawke) OH THE ANGST. This fic made me swoon and cry. It's heartbreaking and grabbed me right at the start with a hundred flaming questions.

July 2024 - Part 1

July 3 - New Heights Ep. 97 airs, season 2 finale. Jason & Travis Kelce discuss Travis' debut on the Eras Tour stage (x) (x 48:30)

Kelce said it was initially his idea to join the show at Wembley Stadium, recalling that he told Swift it would be “funny” if he “rolled out on one of the bikes” that dancers typically ride on stage during the 1989 portion of the show.

Kelce said Swift laughed, but then asked him, “Would you seriously be up for doing something like that?”

“I was just like, ‘What? I would love to do that. Are you kidding me? I’ve seen the show enough — might as well put me to work here,’” he recalled. “And sure enough, she found the perfect part of the show for me to come in.”

Kelce surprised the crowd in London last week when he appeared on stage in a tuxedo and top hat carrying Swift onstage in “The Tortured Poets Department” era of the show.

It happened on the third night of the London stops, after the brothers attended Swift’s first two shows there.

“There was no bike in case I ran into somebody else or hit one of the dancers or anything,” Kelce said. “It was the safest option.”

Kelce said his silly dance on stage was inspired by one Jim Carey does in the movie “Dumb and Dumber.”

“I always wanted to pull out this move, but I never knew like when I should pull it out where it made sense,” he said. “That’s one of my favorite moves of all time!”

All said, Kelce called it an “honor” being on the stage with Swift and her dancers.

“It was an absolute blast,” he shared. “It was such a fun, playful part of the show and it was like the perfect time for me to go up there, just be a ham and have some fun, not only with [Swift]… but the crowd and really try and get everybody excited for the rest of the show. It was awesome.”

“I didn’t disappoint Taylor, so that’s all that really matters,” he added, saying his only rule was “do not drop the baby.”

“The golden rule was ‘Do not drop Taylor. Get her to the couch safe,’” Kelce said.

His brother and co-host Jason Kelce laughed, adding: “No fumbles.”

past top tens in this tag! as always, these rankings are based on some unspecified combo of objective "goodness" and personal enjoyment. books beneath the cut :3

first off, as usual, our BOOKS I LOATHED category. shout-out to: i, claudius by robert graves (SHAME! SHAME! THE TV SHOW IS SO GOODBADCAMP!) and rhinoceros by eugene ionesco (very real argument about fascism; very fucking boring execution). shout-out also to king cheer and immortal longings, both of which were quite bad but which i wouldn't say i "loathed" so much as "they sent me into spirals of shakespearean madness."

my most anticipated 2025 release is the sea eternal by emery robin. also, alecto the ninth again

okay. the meat of the matter. i read SO many good books this year (and so much good short fiction), so lots of runners-up: brotherless night by v.v. ganeshanathan (absolutely gutting with some of the most gorgeous prose i've ever read), white pearl by anchuli felicia king (set in an asian beauty corporation rocked by scandal; filled the succession-shaped hole in my heart), fairview by jackie sibblies drury (this play is doing the coolest fucking things with fourth walls), luster by raven leilani (i adore the main character so much and she is NOT thriving), and the his dark materials series (i wish i had read these as kids, but i'm also glad i have miltonic context?). thank you to my professors for half of these

OKAY. THE LIST!

10. Dare Me by Megan Abbott

i expected a thriller about toxic friendships and evil cheerleaders; i was not expecting this to REWIRE ME. the DYNAMICS in this fucking book. the ugly violent homoerotics and the empty hunger of white suburbia. the tenderness of the grooming. the constant unspoken looming specter of lesbianism. the constant sense that the main characters are teetering on the edge of disaster. 9. Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehesi Coates

okay i know everybody raves about ta-nehesi coates' writing so i wasn't exactly SURPRISED this was good. but i WAS still knocked off my feet by the beauty of this book. this is an extended letter to coates' son on the experience of being a black man in america, and every single page is glowing with heartbreak--for all the black people destroyed and endangered by white supremacist society--and love--for everyone who keeps living, for the world, and for coates' son. i wrote down sooooo many quotes that struck me in the chest

8. Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin

kind of no fucking idea what to say about this book because my sense memory of it is just a whirlwind of "ack augh ough." the way this book envelops you in the psychological and emotional tumult of fourteen-year-old john grimes is crazy and intense and then baldwin DOES IT AGAIN in a series of interludes from other characters. this is about one day in john's life and his experience in the church, but it's also about the exhilarating terror in/of religion and the pain of growing up and the agony of antiblackness and the quiet terror of realizing your parents are fallible and human. and also a little bit about being gay for your youth pastor. did people lose their fucking minds in 1953 when this book came out because i would've

7. Lost Places and Sooner or Later Everything Falls Into the Sea by Sarah Pinsker

favorite author i discovered this year is definitely sarah pinsker, whose short stories mostly have in common that they are strange and whimsical as hell and make me want to crawl into her brain. i can't decide between her two short story collections, so i'm putting them both on here because they were SO fucking fun to read. between the two, some of the short stories include: a horror story told through a folk music genius lyrics page! a robot arm that identified as a road! a kid yelling the lines in the 1920s movie theater! george gershwin! girl scouts! and my favorite, a batshit crazy agatha christie homage set at a convention of dozens of alternate-universe sarah pinsker selves! (which you can read online!)

6. Paradise Lost by Erin Shields

look. there are aspects of this play--a modern reworking of milton's epic poem, featuring hot middle-aged woman satan--that are too on-the-nose. but holy fucking shit, the irreversible things milf satan has done to my brainstem. maybe i'm just a fucking ex-catholic but some of the speeches in this play made me feel like i was being tumbled in a heavy-duty washing machine. also, fascinating things going on with script format here. i wrote an insane transgender satan monologue for my paradise lost class because of this play. (also shout-out shields' king lear adaptation/prequel, left off my list for space but it's REALLY fucking fantastic)

5. In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

okay we all know in the dream house. but i'm here to sing its praises anyway, because reading it feels like walking into a woodchipper. this is a memoir about abuse and an experiment with form and a raw open organ placed directly in your hands. machado's prose is genuinely fucking crazy good; she has such a gift for scalpel-like precision in every sentence, and everything about this book is so carefully-crafted and feels like getting clocked in the teeth. there's a choose-your-own adventure section where the result is always the same. for personal reasons i read this at a weird time and it made me want to get on my knees on the carpet and hack like a sick cat

4. Nobody Knows My Name by James Baldwin

i read this essay collection two weeks into the year and i knew it was going to be one of the most stunning reading experiences of 2024. the first page knocked me flat on my ass and it never let up. he manages that thing so few authors can do, where his eloquent and precise prose is exactly as deft as his observations are perceptive and sharp. his work cuts straight to the truth of things. i finished this book grieving the fact that baldwin died before i was born--because he can't comment on current events? because i can't see him speak live? because i felt some kind of connection to him through the words despite knowing he was not writing for some random college kid in the backseat of a car? anyway i am a groupie now

3. Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

reading this and then in the dream house back to back was like self-trepanation. why did i do that. what in the name of god can i even say about this book. what IS there to say. all the best of fantasy and all the best of humanity are in here in under 300 pages and it made me cry and i have thought about it ceaselessly since and i can't say anything without spoiling the fun because you REALLY ought to go in blind. um. girls, do you like, um... the labyrinth?

2. Angels in America by Tony Kushner

ohhhhhhh my god. oh my fucking god. i mean it with my full chest when i say that this is thee defining dramatic work of modern america. play that is about jewishness and gayness and AIDS and love and sickness and the anxiety of modernity and getting boners and prophecies from reactionary angels. and roy cohn is there. this was written at the end of the 20th century and yet it still hits exactly as hard if not harder in 2024 ("in the twenty-first century we will all be insane" yeah for REAL). it's the play of all time. it's one of the most things ever written. i am going to think about it every day of my fucking life. truly impossible to overstate this one

1. The Stars Undying by Emery Robin

and yet AIA is still my #2, because my #1 is a book i think may have been written specifically for me. like, so much for me that i'm furious i didn't write it. that book being a space opera rendition of cleopatra's life story, featuring insane butch mark antony and bisexual love triangles and CICERO? CICERO IS THERE? this is a slowish character-driven story that wouldn't work if gracia's narration wasn't so stirring and self-aware, but it is, and she is, and she's fascinating and has everything wrong with her, and i am obsessed with the things this book is doing with history and legend and the reception of these figures and also ROMAN HISTORY JOKES IN SPACE!!! and i want anita decretan so bad it makes me look stupid. emery robin do you want my credit card information

I feel like it's been awhile since we've had a good example of a purple pair... would you say this is being overshadowed by pink = love as a narrative color choice?

Anon, I'm tickled pink due to your amazing questions, so let me give you some answers!

Would you say [purple pairs] are being overshadowed by pink = love as a narrative color choice?

No.

Purple Pairs normally come from couples being color coded red and blue. When those two colors are combined, they make purple. For example, Oh! My Assistant showed the gay man as red, the "straight" man as blue

And the bisexual man as purple since he is "between" straight and gay.

But if the people aren't color coded red and blue, it doesn't make a lot of sense to use purple to show them coming together, and in 2023, a majority of the shows I watched had a black x white color-coded pair, not a red x blue, so purple wouldn't be the obvious choice for love.

Also, sometimes it's difficult to distinguish colors.

Are we looking at pink, purple, or blue?

Or is it bisexual lighting?

In the first photo from Kiseki: Dear to Me, to me, it's pink with purple in the background, but in the second photo from KinnPorsche, I'd argue it's purple since I can see the red and blue lighting components, but . . . colors are a spectrum. They bleed into one another so where one stops and another begins is blurry, and sometimes hard to decipher.

Run for Love - My School President

Tinn was a Blue Boy. Gun was a Red Rascal. And yet when they went on their run, their colors morphed into pink and purple. They were learning more about each other with each passing episodes, but the colors clearly showed that the love was going to get them through no matter what obstacles they ran into.

Love is Intense - The Sign

Both couples got this treatment in the show. When they kissed at the beginning, it was a soft pink, but once their love escalated to sex either fictional or real, the pink intensified. It is such an amazing narrative using lighting that it earned FOUR nominations for my upcoming 2024 Colors Awards.

Love is Soft - Never Let Me Go

Palm and Nueng flipped the dynamic we saw in The Sign, but Cinematographer Rath, who is behind Moonlight Chicken, Only Friends, Last Twilight and many more beloved BLs was the one in charge here, so it's not surprising. The boys started off with a vibrant purple that slowly transitioned into a soft pink throughout the series to show their differences melting until there was nothing left but each other and the loved they shared.

Love Games - Dead Friend Forever

Even though this show filled my Macau x Porchay shipper heart after manifesting for two years that Barcode and Ta from KinnPorsche kiss, it also broke me in less than two seconds with this scene. The lovers kissed in an arcade under the pink neon light, but did the red creeping in over Phee signal they would be tied together forever like their bracelets made of red thread suggested or that danger was awaiting both of them? I never feel sure, but I do know this moment is evidence that they did love each other, once, and it was real for both of them.

Love Blooms - Be My Favorite

This actually won the 2023 Colors Award for Best Pink, and it's all thanks to that pink wisteria. Going through this list, most of the love is shown through lighting or clothing, but this show made it clear through a plant that symbolizes friendship, love, and longevity which perfectly aligned with the themes of the show and this couple's relationship. It earned that award!

Signs of Love - Semantic Error

This is visual rhetoric at its finest, and it was THE moment. We got the pink and purple neon sign that read, "Lovely pink. Love Me. Kiss Me" boxing in a boy who was running away from love as his pursuer attempted to make it clear that he loved him after they kissed. Sang Woo didn't stand a chance, and all signs pointed out that he was already in love with Jae Young too. Amazing, right?

Love, Meta - Middleman's Love & Last Twilight

These aren't "love" moments per se, but they were amazing nonetheless because they were a little nod to what pink represents. Middleman's Love saw our lead's love life color his world and everything in it pink, and when he asked his boyfriend why, the simple response was because they were in love. Then, Last Twilight gave a small ode to pink milk which was once a staple in BL series and put the "love" in Boys Love.

Anti Love - Love is Better the Second Time Around

After an ex-love told Hiro he was still very much in love with Hiro, Hiro immediately ran off to propose to his girlfriend during the cheesiest proposal dinner possible. Thankfully, she rejected him, but this scene was meta without saying it was meta unlike Middleman's Love and Last Twilight. It leaned all the way into what the pink represented then bashed it like it was a piñata at a six-year old's birthday party. It was glorious.

Between Love and Like - Deep Night

These two have liked each other since the first episode, but this moment visually presented what it feels like to realize it actually might be something more. They themselves aren't pink, but they are caught in the pink with the blinding light of realization (or love?) right behind them. Do they just like each other? Are they just caught up in the moment? Or might they actually love each other?

Open Your Heart to Love - Dangerous Romance

Ending where we began, this list finishes with a Blue Boy and Red Rascal but instead of purple and pink windbreakers, we got matching pink shirts and purple water. After failing to impress a girl, Kanghan had to change his clothes and was forced to wear a pink "Open House. Open Heart" shirt. Unlike Kanghan, who looked miserable in his new outfit, Sailom was more than excited to get a free shirt out of their adventure. It's not Semantic Error, but the visual rhetoric is clear - Kanghan had already opened his house to Sailom, so why not his heart as well? And once Kanghan was finally ready to make his love clear, the bath he shared with Sailom was magically a blend of their colors, and we finally got purple.

Regardless of how people felt about the show, it understood the color assignment, and I loved it.

Bonus - Purple is the New Pink - Wandee Goodday

Hopefully, you noticed throughout this list how often pink and purple reside in the same scene, and how we see purple more often when the pairs are color coded red and blue. But Wandee Goodday is giving us an actual purple color-coded character in the form of the main character Wandee, so instead of seeing the normal pink for love in this behind-the-scene image, we see Yak being engulfed in Wandee's purple, which means he is probably realizing in this exact moment not just that he loves Wandee, but just how intense that love really is.

But it should be obvious how much Yak loves Wandee if he is willing to be the little bunny wunny for his big cat.

Long diary post about disco elysium and what it means to me

CW mentions of weight, mental health issues, chronic pain, friendship ending, being sad about the state of the world. Mostly nonspecific descriptions.

Also yes this is personal but it's ok to read and respond if you want. But I'm turning rbs off.

I've read A LOT of disco fics, but my favorite ones are those that deal with Harry's healing journey. I've fortunately not dealt with addiction myself, but I do struggle with very poor mental health. It's incredibly relatable and cathartic to see him struggle and then healing to see him get better or find acceptance. ((Bonus points if it's harrykim, but part of that is bc I've been in a relationship for 9 years, and it's made me sappy.))

Not long ago, I spent a good 6 months to a year avoiding any media that might have stressed me out. No violence. No combat in video games. Nothing unpredictable. Nothing where people were yelling. I had let my issues get so out of bounds that my body know how to process fictional stress anymore.

Work had made me so stressed out that I was constantly ill, confused, and on the verge of a panic attack. I lost a signifcant amount of weight without explanation. I was in and out of doctors' offices. My wrists and arms were in constant nerve and muscle pain. I had night terrors in which i would be attacked and feel it. One of my best friends of many years ended our relationship abruptly and without explanation, and she did it the day I reached out to tell her I was struggling but starting to get help.

And somehow it wasn't even the worst I'd ever felt. College was way worse, and i somehow survived that without the access to Healthcare i have now.

Anyway, in the middle of that avoidance period, I hit a sort of rock bottom emotionally.

I played Disco Elysium almost one year out from that rock bottom. It was good timing on my part. And I knew immediately that it was gonna be my new thing. I hadn't had a true obsession in so long (i was depressed). Then the following month I played it three times back to back i think.

This story that contained every bit of darkness that i had been avoiding, and yet it made me feel good. I went in completely blind and came back with something so meaningful I could barely take it. And it made me feel smart and useful. All I wanted to do was talk about it. It's still all I want to do.

I think 2024 being an election year also made it more meaningful to be a disco fan. I like being informed. I like engaging with political opinion. But like a lot of people I couldn't really handle reading the news. I hope this doesn't make me look bad, but I was able to process so much of last year's current events through and because of disco elysium.

2022-2023, and i guess 2024 too really mirrored my struggles back in college. I was in a really bad way back then. And it freaks me out so much knowing that i could have been worse.

You know what saved me in college? The Adventure Time season 6 finale saved me.

Truly I give all my thanks forever and ever to the power of good fiction and hyperfixation. When Finn the Human chose his disgusting meat body and all the struggles of mortal life over omniscient and detached immortality, I felt changed. Like it was my turn to accept my own meat body and all the problems of earth with grace and neutrality. If I think about it too hard I will start crying though.

I relate to Harry's passion, burnout, self sabotaging tendencies, addictive personality, vague traumatic memories, need to help people, chronic pain, unspecified illnesses, impulse to bite back, getting my sad all over the room... I've certainly lived an easier life than this fictional man, but you know, yeah. It doesn't matter. I still get to benefit from making him cry on the sea ice and meet cryptids. I get to benefit from his pain and hope. It's awesome

I think i need to play again soon. I think my current bad state is due mainly to the political situation in the US. I'm not usually one to feel existential fear, but how could I not in times like these. I could really use a lieutenant right now.

I'm also starting a new full time job in a few days, and it's in a new field. And im not gonna be able to see my therapist for a long time. Also my hands are hurting again, which is bad timing. I need those to work.

In just the last few weeks, I've felt the darkness creep back in after holding it at bay for a year and a half. I wasn't doing that great, all that time, but i didn't feel...despair like this. I'm better equipped to deal with it now than I was 2 years ago.

Also I know I can get get more out of DE. Or at the very least, chill the fuck out.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I wrote a whole ttrpg plot set in Jamrock about a death cult that worships the pale (it's far more nuanced then that but i'm purposefully withholding spoilers). This was a huge creative boon for me, a completely new experience, and I'm really proud of my writing. I also got to process some of my despair through this project. The cult in my story was recruiting people with messages of leaving behind hardship, becoming one. I even wrote a reference to Finn's meat body in a "radio transcript". Anyway it's good to choose life and not off yourself even though life is hard etc etc.

I’ve used tumblr on and off for over ten years but wanted a blank slate now in time for NaNoWriMo 2023 and all the future writing projects I’m devoting myself to. Also highly inspired by all the cool writing blogs I’ve discovered so far since restarting this account <3

About Me:

My name is Char or Charlotte (she/her), I’m 25 and live in the Pacific Northwest in the US

I write literary fiction now, but have kept up various personal essay projects and poetry over the years primarily through my private newsletter!

I have a Bachelor’s degree in English Language and Lit with a soft spot for the Gothic and Romantic eras.

Nothing published yet, but since I am finally out of school I am entering a new phase of creative freedom that feels very encouraging.

Fun extras: I’m a virgo sun, pisces moon (yes, it does hurt), my cat’s name is Brad, I am also a fiber artist, musician, home renovator, perfume enthusiast, and chronic illness advocate.

Project Amgydala (tentative title: Ballad of a Blue Whale) Novella- Literary Fiction/Surrealism Status- Draft 1 complete at around 33,000 words 2024 Goal- First revision/draft 2 Synopsis- Maren Hara, a recent graduate, moves back in with her father and turns completely inward. She removes herself from the life she created throughout university and begins walking from sunset to sunrise, looking for something she cannot put her finger on. This leads her to Devereaux's Salvation, a jazz bar seemingly from another era, whose eager manager and illusive owner begin to crack through Maren's walls and bring her back into humanity.

Project Corvidae (tentative title: I Want to Build a Home with You) Undetermined- Literary Fiction/Light Mystery/Horror Status- Plotting and beginning first draft 2024 Goal- Complete outlines and give draft 1 my best shot Synopsis- In the wake of the death of her family matriarch, portrait painter and former performance art prodigy Leonie Richards finds herself on the receiving end of her grandmothers vast literary legacy and her eclectic, spirit filled home. Alongside her uncle, the art store clerk, and a host of portrait clients she begins to unlock the secrets of the final years of her grandmother's life.

Mind Over Matter- this is actually backstory for Leonie from Project Corvidae and seeks to shed light on her past performance art pieces and the relationship between her and her grandmother. Light body horror, unsettling women, the works. One of These Nights- a slice of life, Murakami-inspired piece of an American expat living in Tokyo trying to ground herself within a new language. Digs into themes of friendship and social anxiety. Lots of fun music cameos. a green pea moon- my FAVORITE. My little baby. A surrealist romp through the dream world and how it relates to the joy and fear of being queer and letting yourself be loved. Near and dear to my heart.

—Works: 3 (two wips, one one-shot)

—Highest Hit One-shot: My only one-shot last year was Possession (Dragon Age/Emmrook), and tbh I have no idea what's normal for a ship like this, and so I am happy with the response in any case lol.

—New Things I Tried: Sene and Ameridan developed into a very unique ship for me, in that they are largely, platonically in love. Romantically, their hearts sort of belong to Solas and Telana, but this does not deter them from cultivating a great love between them. As Sene describes it, they are friends who have "expanded the definition of friendship." I like their devotion to one another in that it sort of demands so little beyond itself. It is truly spiritual and very comforting to write.

Also, in both my major fics this year, in two separate fandoms, I am writing couples who are reuniting after having not seen one another physically in ten years (bethyl and solavellan). It's a little strange how that turned out. The emotional maturity involved in this sort of pursuit has been eye-opening. I feel I could not have written these fictions 5-10 years ago in my life.

—Fic I Spent the Most Time On: Likely afterglow, though churning out the first three sections of Riptide in like a month was quite challenging 😅

—Fic I Spent the Least Time On: Possession. It came to me quickly, as I had this idea for Emmrich and Rook falling in love almost vicariously through their pursuit of more information on Solas and Sene during their time in the Inquisition. It was always based on the plot of the A.S. Byatt book Possession, which I love. I wrote it first as a chapter for Riptide, but I realized it could easily stand alone with few tweaks. I wrote the whole thing in probably two sittings.

—Favourite Thing I Wrote: One of my favorite single scenes that I wrote last year is probably, weirdly enough, the scene with Sene and Abelas in the Crossroads, discussing Abelas's past with Solas and Mythal in Chapter 21 of Riptide. At this point, Sene and Abelas have been broken up for a long time, and Abelas is married to another woman. But their devotion to each other is still very strong, as friends and comrades at arms, and I enjoyed exploring these tender, platonic moments between them, how they know each other so well, and how they comfort one another in such a strange and difficult time that really only the two of them, given their respective relationships to Solas, can appreciate.

—Favorite Thing I Read: Most of what I read is for work, and I read many stories last year that inspired me. I reread a lot of work by two of my favorite authors as well: Ann Beattie and Joy Williams. Their work brings something so interesting and dark to this notion of femininity and what happens when a female character gets into this place where she is constantly feeling the need to justify herself to a man, as something slowly withers away inside of her. Meanwhile, in the face of her acceptance toward resignation, he simply seems to flourish, unaffected by matters of the heart, and this is a necessary feature of their duality. One of my favorite short stories ever is Ann Beattie's "The Burning House," published originally in 1979, which is really a perfect encapsulation of this kind of thing.

—Something I Finished: Just Possession. I think...???? Lol

—Miscellaneous Highlights: In both of my fics this year, I have focused on my heroines first, which is not typical for me. Usually, and in the past, I have focused foremost on my tragic male heroes and their singular journeys, ie: Daryl and Solas, and how learning to be loved has been a motivating factor for them and their pursuits. But this year, I have been much more motivated by the heroine's journey. I guess I am still really proud of my characterization of Beth Greene and her life in the Civic Republic in afterglow. I am also really proud of how in-depth I've gotten with my Lavellan, Sene, and her journey in the ten years between Inquisition and Veilguard. In both afterglow and Riptide, we see women trying to move forward with their lives in the face of immense loss, which has evolved and continued to take from them over a period of ten years. They become harder and sadder because of it, but also much wiser and more aware of their potential. They find productive ways to wield their anger, and they grow. They make friends, and they try to find happiness with other people. These relationships don't work out, but they provide valuable tools and wisdom in order to light the way forward, to a grander destiny.

—Writing Goals for 2025: I would simply like to finish my long fics. Lol. I have no idea what else the future may bring.

—Final Thoughts: Last year was a bit of a turning point for me in my writing, as I feel it has matured quite a bit, and while the process was somewhat slow, it feels like it's found its footing now. Very clearly, I can see how my writing for both solavellan and bethyl has changed and grown up in a massive way, mainly via the themes and focus on different kinds of love, how love changes over time, and the pursuit of stoicism and self-actualization on one's on. Riptide, which spans eleven years of Sene's life, sees her changing dramatically from beginning to end, finding a great deal of calm where she used to just be sort of mad with anger. It definitely feels like a more mature companion to my first solavellan fic The Dead Season, in which Sene was very young and still trying to figure out who she was with Solas, let alone without him. Afterglow, meanwhile, feels like a much more mature companion to my first bethyl fic Magnolia, as it is focused on Beth, and how she has grown up as well over the past ten years.

I guess we're all getting older lol (in a good way). That's the theme of the year for me.

about me: a writeblr re-re-re-introduction

Hello! My old pinned post is officially over a year old and makes me cringe whenever I'm on my blog, so it's time to freshen things up again!

I'm Teri, I'm smack dab in the middle of my 20s and figuring out life. My writing is pretty exclusively original stuff, a lot of novels and a lot of fantasy, but I play around with various genres in short stories. Sort of a jack-of-all-trades in regards to hobbies - aside from writing, there's anything from baking to drawing with my ancient art tablet to cross-stitch to playing music to rambling around the patch of woods near my house to watching long-form D&D let's plays.

my goals

I recognize that every time I post something like this, it's with the intention of finally becoming as active on writeblr as I was during the pandemic. I also recognize I've never quite managed that.

So here are some more general goals to get me through 2024:

Finish my 2nd draft of Beyond Alder Creek

Write as cringey and brutally honest as I never allowed myself to as a teenager.

Speaking of, a large reading/writing goal of mine is to go back through every NaNo draft I've ever written (I've participated since 2011). So aside from just reading that and likely turning it into a whole spectacle on here for people's amusement, generally just survive reading through the writing from 8th grade. Stay tuned for more on that in the coming weeks lol

Finally, I have a general goal every year of reaching 100K words, between writing and editing and the like, but I'd happily be a little looser with that goal if it meant getting through others.

And now, without further ado:

Before I get specifically into WIPs, a general overview of the kind of writing you can expect from me:

As I said, I'm a fantasy nerd. I love worldbuilding, both on a large scale (nations and cultures and political relationships) and a small scale (a magic shop in an otherwise contemporary setting).

There's not a lot of romance in my writing, but there Are a lot of transformational relationships and codependency. Friendships, siblings, guardians, general ride-or-dies.

Thought experiments. I've been trying to catch and indulge more in my 'wait, what if?' ideas. Sometimes, that's fun little snippets of silly ideas, sometimes it's a majorly emotionally heavy scene for a story I'll never write. Sometimes, it's coming up with ideas to 'combine genres'. It's all about expanding the range.

I think that about covers everything! As always, I can't make any promises about how the year will wind up and where it takes us. But I will say, I've actually been writing recently, and yk I'm just gonna ride that high.

I have degrees in psychology and music!

I've lived across three continents, but currently live in upstate New York for whatever reason lol

The animals I've ridden on the back of include: horse, pony, elephant, and ostrich. The horse was my least favorite. By far.

I got diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes a couple months after Covid landed stateside (in May 2020) and am Always ready to talk someone's ear off about it.

The first story I ever wrote was on PowerPoint and was about war breaking out between humans and aliens that had taken refuge on Earth after their planet was destroyed. I was 8. There was a Lot of Clipart involved.

I've never been published, but I once secretly planned out, wrote, edited, and self-printed a couple copies of a novel about my best friends and our college apartment. They received it for Christmas last year and loved it (or at least were kind enough to tell me they did)!

Favorite Fics 2023

Happy 2024! I always have a hard time narrowing down my favorites. A few stats this year, I read 155 fics (according to my admittedly not 100% correct database), and it's low because I've been watching LGBTQ+ media and reading less. I had 50+ fics that I rated 5/5, so narrowing down to 14 was me cutting out shorts, holiday fics, and rereads. These are in no particular order.

All is now Harmed by Fondleeds

It's still that dreamy kind of dark, nothing seeming real, but he knows that it's time to go, to whistle for Pippa and eat whatever he's got left in the fridge and start the drive down to Molly's. He can't seem to open the door. Maybe he doesn't want to face it, this new thing. Having Louis here feels like a betrayal. Harry tries not to think about what his Dad would have to say if he saw the journo sleeping on their pull-out, here to shake a settled sheet and watch the dust fly again. - AU. Harry's a farmer, Louis writes for The Age, and it hasn't rained in the Bourke Shire for six years.

Why I Like It: This is Excellent, but after 123K words, it's a WIP. Unfinished since May 2022, but that said, the writing is gorgeous, and I think that alone makes it worth the read.

2. Angels Fly by LilyBlue28

Harry is a lonely omega in the North Western White River Pack who is uncharacteristically drawn to nature and his now outdated primal instincts. He fills his days with going through the motions and clinging to the one actual friendship he has in the omega Zayn, and when he gets a chance he sneaks away to the edge of their territory to sit with the trees and the wildlife and sketch his favorite part of the river. But what happens when one day he spots the pack alpha, Louis, having an intimate moment with something, or someone, unexpected? Suddenly his quiet, nearly invisible existence gets upended, and secrets he never wanted to know quite literally won't leave him alone, and even when he tries to stay away, he keeps being pulled back into Louis' turbulent orbit. A magical love story featuring a generations long grudge, a menacing curse, and secrets that keep pulling them apart. Will they be able to find a way back to one another through the dark?

Why I Like It: Really integrated plot, soul mates/wolf story. ABO, but more wolf than human. Very involved plot. Well done.

3. Be There by mission2feelike

Niall sits down dramatically, arms flopping to his side before he leans forward and looks right into Harry's eyes. "So, your ex-boyfriend, who broke your heart four years ago, is coming to stay at your house for six weeks? And his daughter, your daughter, is coming to stay tonight?"

Harry nods, worried if he speaks, he'll be yelled at again, but then Niall's face softens, his ever-present smile is back and Harry hears him breathe out a small chuckle. "Okay, for the record, I think this is the worst idea you've ever had, but how can we help?" or The one where their family has been torn apart and their hearts broken, but an accident, a snowstorm, cinnamon rolls, and the adorable Josie force Louis and Harry to finally face the truth, and each other.

Why I Like It: Harry and Louis take custody of Lottie's baby, but Louis breaks H's heart by sending him away. pining. kid fic. Harry is famous. Had some very lovely domestic moments, and some tear jerkers. Louis was a bit of a jerk at the beginning. Side of Ziam.

4. Butterfly Gun by Eravain - no link, this is off AO3, but DM me if you want me to share it with you, as I have a PDF.

Harry has never been much of a fighter, but—as always—where Louis Tomlinson is concerned, a lot of things stop being true. 1940's AU. Even after six years apart, they can't forget their shared wartime childhood.

Why I Like It: I loved this gem--childhood friends to lovers. Historical Fiction. Really well written.

5. Counterbalance by YesIsAWord

Harry Styles loves two things: teaching ballet and racing motorcycles. Those two worlds collide when his greatest rival on the track, Louis "Tommo" Tomlinson brings his tiny siblings to Harry's class.

Why I Like It: Pretty short but very effectively written story. Pacing was good. Loved the dichotomy of Harry as a ballerina and as a motorcycle driver.

6. Danger I Can't Hide by CelticSky

"Don't," Tomlinson's voice was low, gravelled, hiding out in the night where only Styles could hear it. "Stop it. Calm down. You can't do anything." Styles' chest heaved. Tomlinson had him pinned against the wall, his forearm strong against his ribs. The night air crackled around them and all he could hear was the overlap of their breath, desperation, exquisite need and pain and desire and longing and lingering resistance. He couldn't take his eyes from Tomlinson's lips. The way they fell open to expel air against Harry's jaw. His tongue darting out to wet them between desperate words, making them glisten in what little light there was. His eyes were lidded and unseeing as he himself looked down to stare at Styles' mouth. ~~~ Flying Officer Styles and Sergeant Tomlinson would have likely never crossed paths in a time of peace, their ordinary lives laid out neatly, predictably before them. But then the world became unrecognisable. All too soon they grew accustomed to fear, surrounded by death and destruction, not even their very freedom a certainty anymore. Until they found each other. Comfort. Companionship. Understanding. Another person to lose.

Why I Like It: Amazing. Research into WW2 and what it was like to be queer and hiding a relationship. loved the love story, but also the human side of the war. Very well told.

7. Have Love, Will Travel by Kingsofeverything

Rather than spend the summer working at their desks, Louis and Harry are given the opportunity to crisscross the country together in a tiny camper, filming their adventures for a YouTube series. It soon becomes obvious to their viewers that there's something more than friendship between them. Eventually, they figure it out.

Why I Like It: super cute. Road Trip Larry. Lots of state parks, travel. Louis has a crush and of course they end up together.

8. Heading for Limbo by KingsofEverything

Childhood best friends who've fallen in and out of touch with each other since Louis' family moved away when they were thirteen, Harry and Louis find their paths crossing again and again. Each time, no matter how many miles apart or how many years it's been, it's as if no time has passed. They fall back into their easy friendship, until life intervenes and sends them on their separate ways once more. When Harry discovers some life-changing things about himself, Louis is there for him, however he needs. But it's all temporary because Louis has plans that will move his life from New York all the way to L.A. and the distance isn't the only thing between them. The pieces of their twice broken hearts are scattered from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

Why I Like It: I really liked this one. Slow burn, friends to not-friends, to lovers, to exes, to lovers. Word of caution, H has a gf for part of it, but it's a really nice slow awakening of his sexuality. TW for some angst/pining.

9. Glass Closets and Greenhouses by TiredTiredTz

Charlton Athletic defender Louis Tomlinson and worldwide sex symbol Harry Styles are rumoured to be hooking up after a viral video filmed at Harry’s Wembley show was posted online by Tommo’s twin sisters. Sources close to the pair tell us the couple have been dating for a while, with rumours of house hunting, marriage and even kids on the cards! Styles, 29, is as well known for his whirlwind love life as his chart-topping music. Most recently linked to British fashion designer Alex Millet-Sloan, Harry has stayed tight-lipped on rumours of any romantic rendezvous between himself and footballer Tomlinson, 31, yet fans online are convinced that all evidence points to #Tomlinstyles being the real deal.

Why I Like It: Could have been longer. A bit over the top meet cute w/ the twins setting them up, but over all well done.

10. It's Fine to Fake it 'Til You Make ('Til It's True) by Sunflouwerhabit

Harry dreads an impending visit to his hometown, where he’ll be forced to reunite with a newly engaged ex-boyfriend, a childhood best friend turned near stranger, and a family who never understood just how desperately he needed to leave. In the midst of it all, a ludicrous Twitter proposition brings him to Louis.

Why I Like It: I loved this one. Super cute characters, a little bit of miscommunication, lovely, lovely boys.

11. Like an Endless Summer by objectlesson - no link, I have this as an epub

Louis is an riding instructor at a summer camp, and Harry is a fellow counselor wh he’s been successfully managing his crush on for the last two years. That is, until Harry shows up this year leveled up and lethal, and all Louis’ formerly perfected veneer of nonchalance melts like a popsicle in the sun.

Why I Like It: absolutely lovely. GREAT depiction of the uncertainty of a crush liking you. slow burn, but you see it coming the whole way.

12. The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by KingsofEverything

Louis' life is steady and calm, moored by his marriage, and tied to his hometown, but after a chance encounter with another man, it'll never be the same.

Why I Like It: really liked this one. TW for cheating. Middle aged man in a loveless marriage realizes he's gay and falls in love with a co-worker. Could totally be a Hallmark movie.

13. Until the Pearls get Lost by LadyLondonderry

London, 1933. Harry Styles, alpha, elusive bachelor and happy third wheel to his coupled friends, receives a visit from one Liam Payne, begging for his help. Liam’s childhood friend Louis is about to become the talk of the city; left at the altar because the mating bond was rejected, Louis will spend the rest of his life in an institution unless Liam can find someone to take him in and care for him as he recovers. Most omegas with failed bonds are never the same again. With rumours swirling around about the reason for the rejected bond, Harry gives in to Liam’s pleas. He hasn’t the slightest idea how that decision will shape the rest of his life.

Why I Like It: This felt like a fairy tale. Great writing. A bit left to the imagination. Almost werewolf-y.

14. Write This Down by Sunflouwerhabit

"And Louis responds by kissing him. He closes his eyes and presses their lips together and hopes it’s enough to distract from how those words cut and extracted critical pieces of his heart, his soul. Louis kisses Harry to avoid sobbing, yelling, pleading, begging him to never, ever use words like always or never or I promise, because they can’t. They don’t have an always. Nevers will forever remain a mere dream. Time has run out for commitments or oaths or pledges and if Louis is going to be okay- if he’s going to enjoy this time with Harry and then let him go and still feel whole- he can’t let himself start thinking long term. He can’t let this become emotional; something more than silliness and fun and sex. He can’t hear Harry say he’s proud of him when he doesn’t know if he’ll ever see him again after this week. 'I miss you,' Harry murmurs, his breaths warm and equally shaky. 'All the time.' Louis kisses him harder."

Why I Like It: I really loved this contemporary romance. Lots of angst, boys being stupid thinking they are protecting each other by not communicating. But ultimately a lovely story. New favorite.
